Abstract:A technique for encapsulating fluorescent organic probes in a micelle system offers an important alternative method to manufacture watersoluble organic nanoparticles (ONPs) for use in sensing Hg2+. This article reports on a study of a surfactant-free micelle-like ONPs based on a 3,6-di(2-thieny1)-2,5-dihydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione (TDPP) amphiphile, (2(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl)-3,6-di(2-thiophyl)-2,5-dihydropyrrolo [3,4-c] pyrrole-1,4-dione (NDPP) fabricated to monitor Hg2+ in water. NDPP was synthesized through a simple one-step modification of a commercially available dye TDPP with a flexible and hydrophilic alkoxy. This study reports, for the first time, that TDPP dyes can respond reversibly, sensitively, and selectively to Hg2+ through TDPP-Hg-TDPP complexation, similar to the well-known thymine(T) Hg thymine(T) model and the accompanying molecular aggregation. Interestingly, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) confirmed that, in water, NDPP forms loose micelle-like fluorescent ONPs with a hydrohobic TDPP portion encapsulated inside. These micelle-like nanoparticles offer an ideal location for TDPP Hg complexation with a modest molecular aggregation, thereby providing both clear visual and spectroscopic signals for Hg2+ sensing. An estimated detection limit of 11 nM for Hg2+ sensing with this NDPP nanoparticle was obtained. In addition, NDPP ONPs show good water solubility and high selectivity to Hg2+ in neutral or alkalescent water. It was superior to most micelle based nanosensors, which require a complicated process in the selection or synthesis of suitable surfactants. The determinations in real samples (river water) were made and satisfactory results were achieved. This study provides a low-cost strategy for fabricating small molecule-based fluorescent nanomaterials for use in sensing Hg2+. Moreover, the NDPP nanoparticles show potential ability in Hg2+ ion adsorption and recognization of cysteine using NDPP-Hg composite particle.
Eco-friendly synthesis of N- cholyl mercapto histidine capped silver nanoparticles and its sensing of mercury (II) ions and photo catalytic degradation of methyl orange

Abstract:In this report, we have developed highly water soluble and stable silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) utilizing N-Cholyl Mercapto Histidine (NCMH) as a reducing and stabilizing agent with near the primary critical micellar concentration (CMC) under ambient sunlight irradiation. Moreover, The NCMH was firstly synthesized by demonstrating the reaction between cholic acid and 2- Mercapto Histidine through a simple acid amine coupling approach. The primary and secondary CMC of NCMH surfactant was measured by pyrene (1 × 10-6 M) as a fluorescent probe, and values were found to be 3.2 and 13.1 mM respectively. The synthesized Ag NPs showed at neutral pH and highly stable for more than one year without any noticeable aggregation. The TEM analysis displays the synthesized Ag NPs having a spherical shape and average size of 9.6 ± 0.5 nm. The synthesis of stabilized Ag NPs was used for ultra-sensitive and selective detection of Hg2+ ions in aqueous medium were monitored by Uv-visible spectrometer and naked eyes with a lowest limit of detection (LOD) 7 nM. The photo-catalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) by utilizing Ag NPs as nano-catalyst exhibits a potential degradation within a study period of 180 min. Concluding that, facile and cost effective green synthesis of NCMH capped Ag NPs possess excellent reducing ability towards the selective detection of Hg2+ ions along with photo-catalytic degradation of MO dye. These true findings detached an innovative pathway of Ag NPs towards the reactivity against the catalytic activity of dye degradation and selective sensing of Hg2+ ions. Thus it paves the way for extensive range of novel potential applications of Ag NPs in various environment friendly approaches of sensitive and analytical protocol in the future.
Sustainable green synthesis of Hedychium coronarium leaf extract-stabilized silver nanoparticles and their applications: colorimetric sensing of Sn2+ and Hg2+ and antifungal and antimicrobial properties

Abstract:Hedychium coronarium (Hc) (commonly known as Gulbakawali) leaf extract was used for the stable and sustainable green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Hc-AgNPs), which were biodegradable and non-toxic. Hedychium coronarium leaf extract was used as a reducing agent to stabilize the Hc-AgNPs by converting Ag+ to Ag0 without adding any capping agent. It demonstrated stability for up to six months, and no agglomeration was observed. The Hc-AgNPs were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, and fluorescence spectroscopy analysis. The UV-visible spectrum supported the formation of stable Hc-AgNPs by displaying a strong surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak at 440 nm. FT-IR spectra showed the functional groups present in the leaf extract of Hedychium coronarium, which was the primary source of secondary metabolites attached to Ag0. XRD analysis revealed a distinct 2θ peak of Hc-AgNPs at 38.15°, indicating a face-centred cubic structure with a crystallite size of 22.6 ± 1 nm at the (111) plane. Moreover, TEM demonstrated the spherical morphology of the Hc-AgNPs with an average particle size of 22.42 ± 1 nm. The photophysical characteristics of the Hc-AgNPs, as highlighted by their UV-vis and fluorescence characteristics, revealed their semiconducting nature with an impressive band gap (E g) value of 3.78 eV. Fascinatingly, the fluorescence activity of Hc-AgNPs at 504 nm showed a broad emission band corresponding to the absorption band at 251 nm. We performed the selective colorimetric sensing of Sn2+ metal ions using Hc-AgNPs, which demonstrated a detection limit of 10-3 M, suggesting their potential as very good solid biosensors. Interestingly, the Hc-AgNPs showed antifungal activity, which has not been reported before. Specifically, the results showed that the Hc-AgNPs had a higher fungitoxicity effect against Aspergillus flavus (59.58 ± 3.68) than against Fusarium oxysporum (57.93 ± 4.18). The antibacterial activity of the Hc-AgNPs was evaluated against three Gram-negative phytopathogenic bacteria: Xanthomonas oryzae (X. oryzae), Ralstonia solanacearum (R. solanacearum), and Erwinia carotovora (E. carotovora), showing effective inhibition zones of 16.33 ± 0.57, 15.33 ± 0.57, and 14.33 ± 0.57 mm, respectively. These results indicate that the Hc-AgNPs could inhibit these phytopathogenic bacteria with varying degrees of effectiveness in the order of X. oryzae > R. solanacearum > E. carotovora.

Abstract:Mercury contamination has been a major concern for decades and its removal from environment and natural waterbodies are of highest priority. Inspired by the fact to detect trace amount of mercury and consequently removal of the same, here we present a silver nanoparticle based affordable, rapid and sensitive probe for inspecting the mercury levels on various waterbodies and soil samples with exceptional sensitivity (12 nM). This study reports the design, synthesis and characterization of novel disulfonic acid functionalized oxacalix[4]arene appended silver nanoparticles (DSOC@AgNPs). Driven by the distinct color change phenomena of DSOC@AgNPs upon interaction with Hg 2+ ions, we have fabricated a paper strip-based ready-to-use detection kit for rapid detection of mercury ions up to sub-nanomolar concentration. Moreover, DSOC@AgNPs modified screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE) have been developed and utilized as a rapid detection kit for mercury in environmental samples. DSOC@AgNPs encapsulated ZIF-8 nanohybrid (DSOC@AgNPs-ZIF) have been employed for the removal of Hg 2+ ions from mercury contaminated wastewater with a removal efficiency of 95%. Incidentally, this is the first report for the removal of Hg 2+ ions (CH 3 Hg + and Hg 2+ species) using oxacalixarene-stabilized AgNPs. Further, the surface-modified Rh6G-DSOC@AgNPs reveal its bio-imaging potentiality for mercury detection in living systems and also exhibited dose-dependent cytotoxicity against MCF-7 cells, with an IC 50 value of 354.62 μM.

Abstract:Contamination of the environment by hazardous metal ions has been a major environmental issue for the past several decades. Among several hazardous metals, mercury ion (Hg(II)) is of particular concern as its compounds are extremely toxic. Hence, developing detection methods for traces of Hg(II) ions in aquatic systems is critical for mercury pollution mitigation. One method that can be used to monitor Hg(II) in aquatic systems is colorimetry-based method which is simple, rapid, and low-cost, yet selective and sensitive. The method can be conducted by applying the Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance phenomenon of metal nanoparticles, such as silver nanoparticles. There are non-Hg(II) ions in the aquatic environment that can interfere the measurements. Thus, a selective method is needed to obtain a valid measurement result. Here, we introduced silver nanoparticles-chitosan (AgNPs-Ch) synthesized by chemical reduction as a selective probe of Hg(II) in an aqueous solution. The AgNPs-Ch was synthesized from silver nitrate at 80°C using trisodium citrate and chitosan as reducing agent and stabilizer, respectively. The synthesized nanoparticles were spherical with an average size below 15.0 nm. Moreover, the AgNPs-Ch was selective for Hg(II) with a linearity of 0.9556 in the concentration range of 1 - 5 ppm and was able to detect the ion down to 1.33 ppm.

Abstract:Developing a multifunctional platform for the selective detection and effective removal of toxic ions is a major challenge when addressing heavy metal contamination in environmental science. Herein, novel nonconjugated polymer nanoparticles (PNPs) called mercaptosuccinic acid-thiosemicarbazide PNPs (MT-PNPs) with appealing fluorescence and stability are synthesized via facile one-step hydrothermal treatment for attractive sensing and simultaneous removal of mercury(II). Interestingly, aggregation-induced fluorescence switch-off and scattering enhancement are found upon the addition of Hg2+, rendering MT-PNPs as a ratiometric sensor for selective and accurate Hg2+ monitoring. A wide linear range (0.1–1471 μM) and a low detection limit (95 nM) are obtained. This dual-signal opposite responses triggered by Hg2+ originate from the formation of MT-PNP-Hg2+ congeries via the multisite binding between S,N,O-containing groups of MT-PNPs and mercury. Meanwhile, target-induced aggregation renders an effective Hg2+ separation from contaminative aqueous media by MT-PNPs, which exhibits a satisfactory absorption efficiency of 90.42% within 50 min. Upon the simple Na2S treatment, the MT-PNPs can be regenerated and reused. Abstract:In this study, we present a novel colorimetric method for the precise and sensitive detection of Hg ions utilizing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) produced and stabilized in an aqueous medium using Poly allyl amine hydrochloride (PAH). Nanoparticles were prepared from silver nitrate and NaBH4 along with CTAB at 26 ± 2 °C with an average size of 30.21 ± 6.5 nm. The prepared AgNPs solution exhibited yellowish brown color with a surface Plasmon peak at 420 nm. By adding Hg ions, the yellow color of the solution was transformed into a colorless suspension, and the color change was proportional to the Hg ion concentration. The presence of other metal ions had no effect on the color (sensitivity); confirming the selectivity of CTAB stabilized PAH capped AgNPs towards Hg ions. The generated probe has a 1 nM low detection limit when measured using a UV–visible spectrophotometer. The proposed approach has the potential to be utilized in real-time environments with greater precession by applying RGB values to make a revolutionary sensor using visible light imaging technique.

Abstract:Mercury ion (Hg2+) is an extremely hazardous pollutant to humans, soil, and aquatic life. Nanozyme-based sensing approaches are promising for detecting toxic heavy metal ions. However, applying noble metal nanozymes in developing affordable and portable sensors remains largely unexplored. Herein, a gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-based colorimetric sensor was established for the ultra-trace detection of Hg2+ by capitalizing the inherent peroxidase-mimetic features of AuNPs for oxidizing the colorimetric indicator 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). AuNPs of size less than 10 nm were directly prepared in aqueous media using a stimuli-responsive, poly(ethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate)-b-poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (p(PEGEMA)-b-p(DMAEMA)) block copolymer, synthesized through RAFT polymerization. The block copolymers efficiently interacted with Au3+ ions toward the formation of stable, monodispersed AuNPs without additional reducing agents or stabilizers. Using TMB, H2O2, and the AuNP colorimetric system, the concentration of Hg2+ in aqueous media was quantitatively and selectively detected over those of other common interfering metal ions. The selective detection of Hg2+ was promoted by the Au-Hg amalgamation process, which is correlated with intensity of the colorimetric response. Colorimetrically, Hg2+ was linearly measured between 10 nM and 3.5 μM and achieved a detection limit of 0.4 nM. Subsequently, an on-field naked-eye sensing strategy was also developed by integrating the colorimetric sensor on a paper analytical device with a detection limit of 3.5 nM. The efficient colorimetric sensing platform for selective and trace detection of Hg2+ is promising for determining mercury contamination in different water and biological samples.

Abstract:In this study, an aqueous extract of Sclerocarya birrea leaves was used as a reducing agent to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The synthesis was carried out at room temperature and was both rapid and simple. Different characterization techniques such as UV/visible spectroscopy, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy were used to confirm the formation of AgNPs. The synthesized nanoparticles exhibited catalytic activity for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol, methyl orange, methylene blue, and rhodamine 6G. The catalytic activity was monitored by measuring the UV/visible absorbance spectra of the compounds using sodium borohydride as a reducing agent and found to be high. Additionally, the particles displayed oxidase-like activity. In the presence of AgNPs, 3, 3′, 5, 5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) which is colorless was transformed to oxidized TMB, which is blue, using dissolved oxygen as the oxidant. In the presence of Hg2+, the oxidase-like activity was enhanced. On the basis of this observation, an assay for the analysis of Hg2+ was developed. The linear range of the calibration curve is wide (0–600 µM) and the limit of detection (LOD) is low, as small as 34.8 nM. The method is strongly selective towards Hg2+. Tap water obtained from the laboratory where these experiments were carried out was used to study the feasibility of the method in real sample analyses.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Environmental pollution derivated from toxic metals and organic toxins is becoming a serious issue worldwide because of their harmful effects on the ecosystem and human health. Here we are reporting an extremely selective and cost-effective colorimetric sensor for simultaneous recognition of Hg2+ and Pb2+ by using green synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) mediated from the environmental friendly roots extract of Bistorta amplexicaulis. Biogenic synthesized AgNPs were well-characterized by various spectroscopic techniques e.g., UV-vis, FT-IR, XRD, AFM, and Zetasizer. The photophysical potential of synthesized AgNPs toward common metal cations was explored via absorption spectroscopy and colorimetric assay. The hypsochromic shift in the SPR band of AgNPs can easily be detected through naked eyes vision from dark brown to light yellow in the case of Hg2+. A substantial reduction in the absorbance of AgNPs was recorded upon mixing with Pb2+. AgNPs based colorimetric sensor is highly sensitive toward Hg2+ and Pb2+ with a limit of detection (LOD) of 8.0 × 10−7 M and 2.0 × 10−7 M for Hg2+ and Pb2+, respectively. Furthermore, AgNPs showed promising catalytic activity for the degradation of methyl orange dye. These results demonstrate that Bistorta amplexicaulis stabilized silver nanoparticles have potential applications as a colorimetric sensor and an effective catalyst for the degradation of methyl orange.

Abstract:The present study describes an eco‐friendly and cost‐effective approach for the synthesis of AgNPs using Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum‐graecum L.) seeds of variety HM 425. These AgNPs were characterized using UV‐Visible spectroscopy, PSA, FESEM‐EDX, XRD, HRTEM, and FTIR techniques. AgNPs also showed great potential for the degradation of toxic dyes and act as solid bio‐based sensor by Colorimetric sensing of heavy metal ions. In the present study, silver nanoparticles were synthesized via green synthesis using fenugreek (Trigonella foenum‐graecum L.) seeds of variety HM 425. The AgNPs were characterized by using UV‐Visible spectroscopy, Particle size analyzer, Field emission scanning electron microscopy coupled to Energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy, XRD, High resolution transmission electron microscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. The AgNPs were spherical and had an average particle size of 28 nm. The reduction of cationic dyes Methylene blue, Rhodamine B, and an anionic azo dye Methyl Orange by Sodium borohydride was used as a model reaction to investigate the catalytic ability of AgNPs. The results demonstrated an efficient catalytic dye degradation of methylene blue (95.81 %, 25 min, 0.1737±0.01 min−1), Rhodamine B (90.23 %, 15 min, 0.1388±0.01 min−1) and methyl orange (83.63 %, 39 min, 0.0412±0.002 min−1). The synthesized AgNPs had an excellent detection limit of 12.50 μM for Hg2+, making them excellent solid bio‐based sensors for mercury sensing.

Abstract:The monitoring of heavy metal ions in ocean is crucial for environment protection and assessment of seawater quality. However, the detection of heavy metal ions in seawater with electrochemical sensors, especially for long-term monitoring, always faces challenges due to marine biofouling caused by the nonspecific adsorption of microbial and biomolecules. Herein, an electrochemical aptasensor, integrating both antifouling and antibacterial properties, was developed for the detection of Hg2+ in the ocean. In this electrochemical aptasensor, eco-friendly peptides with superior hydrophilicity served as anti-biofouling materials, preventing nonspecific adsorption on the sensing interface, while silver nanoparticles were employed to eliminate bacteria. Subsequently, a ferrocene-modified aptamer was employed for the specific recognition of Hg2+, leveraging the aptamer's ability to fold into a thymine-Hg2+-thymine (T-Hg2+-T) structure upon interaction, and bringing ferrocene nearer to the sensor surface, significantly amplifying the electrochemical response. The prepared electrochemical aptasensor significantly reduced the nonspecific adsorption in seawater while maintaining sensitive electrochemical response. Furthermore, the biosensor exhibited a linear response range of 0.01-100 nM with a detection limit of 2.30 pM, and realized the accurate monitoring of mercury ions in real marine environment. The research results offer new insights into the preparation of marine antifouling sensing devices, and it is expected that sensors with antifouling and antimicrobial capabilities will find broad applications in the monitoring of marine pollutants.

Abstract:Abstract The production of environmentally friendly silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has aroused the interest of the scientific community due to their wide applications mainly in the field of environmental pollution detection and water quality monitoring. Here, for the first time, five plant leaf extracts were used for the synthesis of AgNPs such as Basil , Geranium , Eucalyptus , Melia , and Ruta by a simple and eco-friendly method . Stable AgNPs were obtained by adding a silver nitrate (AgNO 3 ) solution with the leaves extract as reducers, stabilizers and cappers. Only, within ten minutes of reaction, the yellow mixture changed to brown due to the reduction of Ag + ions to Ag atoms. The optical, structural, and morphology characteristics of synthesized AgNPs were determined using a full technique like UV–visible spectroscopy, FTIR spectrum, XRD, EDX spectroscopy, and the SEM. Thus, Melia azedarach was found to exhibit smaller nanoparticles (AgNPs-M), which would be interesting for electrochemical application. So, a highly sensitive electrochemical sensor based on AgNPs-M modified GCE for phenol determination in water samples was developed, indicating that the AgNPs-M displayed good electrocatalytic activity. The developed sensor showed good sensing performances: a high sensitivity, a low LOD of 0.42 μM and good stability with a lifetime of about one month, as well as a good selectivity towards BPA and CC (with a deviation less than 10%) especially for nanoplastics analysis in the water contained in plastics bottles. The obtained results are repeatable and reproducible with RSDs of 5.49% and 3.18% respectively. Besides, our developed sensor was successfully applied for the determination of phenol in tap and mineral water samples. The proposed new approach is highly recommended to develop a simple, cost effective, ecofriendly, and highly sensitive sensor for the electrochemical detection of phenol which can further broaden the applications of green silver NPs.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized using the aqueous extract of Terminalia chebula (T-Chebula) fruits. Characterization through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed AgNPs with a crystalline size ranging from 21 to 24 nm. The biosynthesized AgNPs exhibited a morphology unique to T-Chebula-AgNPs (TC-AgNPs), with an average size of 50 nm and a band gap energy of 2.8 eV. Evaluation of antimicrobial properties against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) showcased the potential antibacterial activity of AgNPs compared to the standard gentamicin antibiotic. Notably, increasing concentrations of TC-AgNPs correlated with larger zones of inhibition, highlighting their efficacy. In contrast, the T-Chebula extract alone showed no bactericidal activity. Furthermore, under visible light irradiation, TC-AgNPs exhibited significant catalytic potential in degrading water-soluble industrial methylene (MB) dyes, achieving 92% dye degradation rate compared to the previous studies. The stability and recyclability of TC-AgNPs were notably robust across three iterations. Biogenically synthesized TC-AgNPs demonstrate exceptional potential in degrading organic pollutants and deactivating microorganisms. These findings underscore their promising applications in microbial control and the photodegradation of organic pollutants, highlighting their role in sustainable environmental remediation efforts.

Abstract:Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) are used in several sectors as antitumor, antimicrobial, and environmental adsorbents. Thus, the present research objective was the production of bacterial-SeNPs as an active and environmentally-friendly antibacterial and adsorbent agents and application into novel nanocomposite filter. From a total of 25 samples (soil, wastewater, and water) obtained from different locations in Egypt, 60 selenium-resistant bacterial isolates were obtained (on a mineral salt medium supplemented with selenium ions). After screening (based on the conversion of selenium from ionic form to nanoform), a superior bacterial isolate for SeNPs formation was obtained and molecular identified as Bacillus pumilus isolate OR431753. The high yield of SeNPs was noted after optimization (glucose as carbon source, pH 9 at 30 °C). The produced SeNPs were characterized as approximately 15 nm-diameter spherical nanoparticles, in addition to the presence of organic substances around these particles like polysaccharides and aromatic amines (protein residues). Also, they have antibacterial activity increased after formation of nanocomposite with nano-chitosan (SeNPs/NCh) against several pathogens. The antibacterial activity (expressed as a diameter of the inhibitory zone) averaged between 2.1 and 4.3, 2.7 and 4.8 cm for SeNPs and SeNPs/NCh, respectively compared with 1.1 to 1.8 cm for Amoxicillin. The produced nanoselenium/chitosan was used as a biofilter to remove mercury (Hg) and AgNPs as model chemicals with serious toxicity and potential pollutant for water bodies in many industries. The new SeNPs/NCh biofilter has proven highly effective in individually removing mercury and AgNPs from their synthetic wastewaters, with an efficiency of up to 99%. Moreover, the removal efficiency of AgNPs stabilized at 99% after treating them with the syringe filter-Se nanocomposite for 4 cycles of treatment (5 min each).

Abstract:Heavy metal ions (HMIs) are major water pollutants, and their toxicity for humans is a great concern for scientists and environmentalists. They are harmful to health even at trace levels; therefore, identifying and removing heavy metals from water is critical. Herein, we report highly selective and sensitive multi-analyte detection of HMIs in water using an electrochemical sensor probe based on Ag nanoparticles and single-walled carbon nanotubes incorporating copper benzene tri-carboxylate metal–organic frameworks (Ag/SWNTs@CuBTC-MOFs). The materials were characterized using FTIR, XPS, XRD, and FE-SEM with EDX mapping, TEM, TG-DTA, BET surface area, CV, and EIS. The Ag/SWNTs@CuBTC-MOF electrochemical sensor was tested by differential pulse voltammetry over a pH range of 3–10 for various HMIs. It shows high pH-dependent sensitivity towards Hg 2+ (pH-5.0), Ni 2+ (pH-7.0), and Fe 3+ (pH-10.0) ions and a limit of detection of 1.39 nM, 2.6 nM, and 3.03 nM, respectively. The fabricated sensor probe exhibits high selectivity, good linearity, and a limit of detection below the maximum contamination limit, as the US Environmental Protection Agency suggested.

Abstract:Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using plant extracts has emerged as a viable environment-friendly method. The aim of the study was to biosynthesize AgNPs using cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis) waste extract and further test their potential applications in photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye and Hg2+ biosensing. Optimum extract concentration, AgNO3 concentration, pH and temperature required for biosynthesis of stable AgNPs were determined by UV–visible spectroscopy. FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, SAED, XPS and BET analysis were performed for characterizing AgNPs. MB dye degradation using AgNPs was determined by analyzing the intensity of dye absorption maxima at 664 nm. Specificity and sensitivity of biosynthesized AgNPs for Hg2+ ions were studied for assessing their biosensing abilities. Optimum conditions needed for biosynthesis of stable AgNPs were observed to be 3 ml extract, 0.5 mM AgNO3, pH 8.5 and microwave-assisted heating at 600 W for 5 min. FT-IR analysis showed that the extract contained necessary functional groups that facilitated biosynthesis of AgNPs. XRD, SEM, TEM, SAED, XPS results confirmed the formation of AgNPs. BET analysis showed that AgNPs had an average size of 35.08 nm and surface area of 19.22 m2/g. Maximum MB dye degradation percentage of 97.57% was obtained at 150 min without any significant silver leaching thereby, signifying notable photocatalytic property of AgNPs. Biosensing studies showed that AgNPs were specifically able to detect up to 0.1 mg/l Hg2+ ions. In summary, cauliflower waste served as a useful source of reducing agents for biosynthesizing AgNPs with promising environmental applications.

Abstract:Herein, the synthesis of a biocompatible silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), for colorimetric detection of toxic mercury (II) ion (Hg 2+ ), is reported. Phenolic-rich fraction of Asystasia gangetica leaf was extracted and used as a reductant of silver salt, all within the hydrophilic konjac glucomannan (KgM) solution as stabilizer, at room temperature (RT). The bioactive components of Asystasia gangetica phenolic extract (AGPE), as elucidated with a (UHPLC-MS-QTOF-MS), revealed plethora of phenolic compounds, which can facilitate the reduction of silver salt at ambient conditions. Sparkling yellow colloidal solution of KgM-AgNPs was realized within 1 h, at RT, having a UV–vis maximum at 420 nm. KgM-AgNPs was characterized using UV–vis, Raman and (FTIR), TEM, SEM, EDS, XRD, TGA/DTG. TEM and FESEM images showed that KgM-AgNPs were spherical, with particle size distribution around 10–15 nm from TEM. The KgM-AgNPs biocompatibility was investigated on mouse L929 fibrobroblast and rat erythrocytes, without any harmful damages on the tested cells. In aqueous environment, KgM-AgNPs demonstrated good detection capacity toward Hg 2+ , in a Hg 2+ concentration dependent fashion, within 3 min. Absorbance ratios (A 360 /A 408 ) was linear with Hg 2+ concentrations from 0.010–10.0 to 10.0–60.0 μM, with an estimated (LOD) of 3.25 nM. The probe was applied in lake water sample, with satisfactory accuracy.

Abstract:The continuous monitoring of Hg2+ levels in aqueous environments is crucial to assess a potential indication of methylmercury contamination via bacterial conversion, yet existing methods often require extensive sample treatment, expensive equipment, and transportation to a specialized facility. To mitigate this issue, this study introduces the synthesis and application of three naphthalimide-based compounds with significant fluorescent and solvatochromic behaviour (C1, C2 and C3) for the detection of mercury ions, with an inherent associated antibacterial activity, creating a dual-functionality material. The incorporation of these compounds into polymers, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), poly (methyl methacrylate-co-methacrylic acid) (PUMA), and starch, allowed for the development of solid-support sensors/surfaces with a strong antibacterial profile, highlighting the inherent dual-functionality of the compounds. Most interestingly, the C2-doped starch biopolymer allowed for the detection of Hg2+ ions at concentrations as low as 2 ppm in an aqueous environment through a rapid, on-site evaluation without the need for sample treatment. This biopolymer was constructed following a sustainable, green-chemistry-oriented, temperature-dependent water/starch synthetic route, without the addition of plasticizers, and without any associated ecotoxicity. The study promotes the use of sustainable methods for environmental monitoring and antibacterial applications, advancing material science to offer effective, accessible, and eco-friendly solutions for detecting and mitigating mercury pollution and bacterial contaminations, enhancing environmental and health safety.
