Abstract:The aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of Tooth Mousse (TM) application, smear layer removal, and storage time on resin-dentin microtensile bond strength (µTBS). Dentin specimens were divided into two groups: (1) smear layer covered; (2) smear layer removed using 15% EDTA for 90 s. In each group, half the specimens were treated once with TM for 60 min. After bonding procedures using a two-step self-etching adhesive (Clearfil SE Bond (CSE); Kuraray Medical, Tokyo, Japan), an all-in-one adhesive (G-Bond (GB); GC Corp, Tokyo, Japan), and a total-etch adhesive (Adper Single Bond 2 (SB); 3M ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA), the specimens were stored for 3 d or 6 months in deionized water at 37 °C, and µTBS was tested and analyzed. With the exception of SB (no TM application) and GB, the μTBS was significantly increased for CSE and SB using EDTA pre-conditioning and 3 d of storage (P≤0.001). Bond strength of GB decreased significantly when using EDTA (3 d storage, P<0.05). TM application only increased the μTBS of GB (no EDTA) and SB (with EDTA) after 3 d (P≤0.02). Comparing the adhesives after 3 d of storage, CSE exhibited the greatest μTBS values followed by GB and SB (P≤0.02). The factors of adhesive, EDTA, and TM did not show any significant impact on μTBS when specimens were stored for 6 months (P>0.05). The additional application of TM and EDTA for cavity preparation seems only to have a short-term effect, and no influence on µTBS of dentin bonds after a period of 6 months.

Abstract:Purpose To evaluate the effect of cleaning methods and thermocycling on the micro‐tensile bond strength between resin cement and contaminated zirconia and to characterize the physicochemical alterations at the zirconia surface resulting from contaminants and subsequent application of cleaning methods. Materials and Methods Thirty‐two alumina air‐abraded zirconia blocks were divided into eight groups: (i) uncontaminated control followed by methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP) primer (G‐Multi Primer) application (CON). In groups ii–viii, the blocks were contaminated with saliva and silicone disclosing agents, followed by cleaning as follows: (ii) MDP primer applied, followed by contamination (GMP1); (iii) MDP primer applied before and after contamination (GMP2); (iv) cleaning with alumina air‐abrasion (APA); (v) cleaning with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl); (vi) cleaning with Ivoclean (IVC); (vii) cleaning with ZirClean (ZC); and (viii) cleaning with Katana Cleaner (KC). After cleaning, the zirconia blocks in groups iv–viii were applied with MDP primer. The blocks in each group were cemented together with resin cement (G‐Cem Linkforce). Subsequently, each bonded zirconia block was sectioned using a water‐cooled diamond saw into microsticks (1 × 1 × 9 mm3). Micro‐tensile bond strength was measured after either 24 h or 10,000 thermal cycles (n = 20/subgroup). Data were analyzed using two‐way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by one‐way ANOVA, and Tukey's post‐hoc test. The contact angle measurements, energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier‐transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer were used for physiochemical evaluation. Results After 24 h of water storage, the highest bond strength was observed in the CON, NaOCl, APA, and GMP2 groups. After thermocycling, the bond strength significantly decreased in all groups except the GMP2 group, which maintained the highest bond strength. Commercial ceramic cleaning agents (IVC, ZC, and KC groups) exhibited lower bond strengths than the CON groups in both aging conditions. Conclusions The application of MDP primer before and after contamination is a promising cleaning protocol for removing saliva and silicone disclosing agent contaminants from zirconia surfaces. This approach achieved the highest bond strength and maintained it even after artificial aging through thermocycling.

The effect of a universal cleaning agent on the bonding performance of a self-adhesive cement to contaminated dentin surfaces

Abstract:Purpose: This study examined the effect of using KATANA Cleaner (KC) containing 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP) salt on the micro-shear bond strength (µSBS) of a self-adhesive cement to uncontaminated and contaminated dentin. Methods: Dentin samples were categorized into four contamination conditions (no contamination, saliva, blood, saliva/blood mixed) and subjected to two decontamination methods (water rinse and KC use), forming eight groups. Scanning electron microscope images representing each group were obtained. One sample representing each group was analyzed by Raman Spectroscopy. Composite resin was bonded to the sample dentin surfaces with a self-adhesive resin cement. After 5,000 thermal cycles, the µSBS test was performed. The data were analyzed statistically (α= 0.05). Results: The lowest µSBS value was observed in the water-rinsed mixed contamination group, while the highest was in the KC-treated uncontaminated group. KC-treated groups exhibited significantly higher µSBS values compared to water-rinsed groups for each contamination type (P< 0.05), indicating the efficacy of KC in enhancing bond strength. Clinical significance: There are limited studies using the new MDP salt-containing cleaner on dentin. In this study, contamination of dentin tissue with saliva, blood, and saliva/blood mixture was simulated and the effects of water rinsing and MDP salt-containing cleaner (KATANA Cleaner) on bond strength were tested as decontamination methods. The results showed that the use of a cleaner containing MDP salt increased the bond strength to dentin tissue under both non-contaminated and contaminated conditions.
Bonding Effectiveness of Saliva-Contaminated Monolithic Zirconia Ceramics Using Different Decontamination Protocols

Abstract:Objective. This research study investigated the effect of new decontamination protocols on the bonding capacity of saliva-contaminated monolithic zirconia (MZ) ceramics cemented with two different monomer-containing self-adhesive resin cements. Materials and Methods. Standardized tooth preparations (4 mm. axial height) were performed for eighty human maxillary premolars under constant water cooling system. Eighty monolithic zirconia crowns (Whitepeaks Supreme Monolith) ( n=8/10 groups) were manufactured by CAD-CAM. Specimens were kept in the artificial saliva at pH=7.3 for 1 minute at 37°C except control groups. The specimens have not been prealumina blasted and grouped according to cleaning methods and resin cements: control groups (C) (no saliva contamination+GPDM+4‐META (N) (CN) and 10-MDP (M) containing resin cement (CM), alumina blasted AL+GPDM+4‐META (ALN) and 10-MDP containing resin cement (ALM), zirconium oxide containing universal cleaning agent (IC) applied+GPDM+4‐META (N) (ICN) and 10-MDP containing resin cement (ICM), pumice (P) applied+GPDM+4‐META (PN) and 10-MDP containing resin cement (PM), and air-water spray (AW) applied+GPDM+4‐META (AWN) and 10-MDP containing resin cement (AWM)). Monobond Plus was applied to all surfaces for 40 seconds before cementation. The thermal cycle was applied at 5,000 cycles after cementation. The crowns were tested in tensile mode at a speed of 1 mm/min. The mode of failure was recorded. SEM examinations were carried out at different magnifications. Data were analyzed using rank-based Kruskal-Wallis and Mann–Whitney tests. Results. No significant differences were found between the surface treatments and between the two types of resin cements. Interaction effects between surface treatments and resin cements were found to be significant by two-way ANOVA analysis. ICM group resulted in significantly better bond strength results compared with CN. ICM was found to result in better bond strength results compared with PM. The combination of universal cleaning agent and 10-MDP containing resin cement had significantly the highest cementation bond strength values. The increasing order of mean tensile bond strength values of decontamination protocols was C<aw<p<al<ic . The mean tensile bond strength of 10-MDP containing resin cement was slightly higher than GPDM+4‐META containing resin cement. Conclusions. Universal cleaning agents can be preferred as an efficient cleaning method with 10-MDP-containing cement after saliva contamination for better adhesive bond strength of 4 mm crown preparation height of monolithic zirconia ceramics.</aw<p<al<ic<>

Abstract:The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different cleaning methods on the shear bond strength (SBS) of resin cement to contaminated zirconia specimens. Eighty rectangular-shaped specimens (2 × 5 × 10 mm) were fabricated from Zirconia blocks (IPS e.max ZirCAD) and randomly divided into 8 groups (n = 10). Group A (control) was not exposed to contaminants. The following tests specimens were contaminated with saliva and silicone indicating paste. Group B was coated with ceramic primer, then subjected to contamination. Groups C, D, E, F, G, and H were contaminated; cleaned with water rinse, Ivoclean, air particle abrasion, hydrofluoric acid, KATANATM Cleaner and ZirCleanTM, respectively, and then coated with ceramic primer and bonded to dual cure resin cement cylinders. All the specimens were subjected to artificial aging and surviving specimens were subjected to the SBS test. For statistical analysis, ANOVA and multiple comparison methods at the 0.05 significance level were used. There was no statistically significant difference among Ivoclean (21.48 ± 2.90 MPa), air particle abrasion (21.92 ± 2.85 MPa), and the control group (24.68 ± 5.46). The application of ceramic primer before contamination did not preserve the SBS of resin cement to zirconia. Cleaning the contaminated zirconia surface with hydrofluoric acid (15.03 ± 3.63) or KATANATM Cleaner (17.27 ± 7.63) did not restore SBS to the uncontaminated state, but it was significantly higher than simply rinsing with water (12.46 ± 5.17) or the use of ZirCleanTM (11.59 ± 5.53). The bond strength of resin cement to zirconia was influenced by cleaning methods.

Abstract:In recent years, the development of cost-effective processing techniques, novel design concepts and new materials paved the way to a widespread diffusion of micro- and nano-electro-mechanical systems (NEMS/MEMS). Obviously, the reliability as well as the performance of NEMS/MEMS depend on the corresponding materials properties, which in turn should be determined using ad-hoc small samples fabricated at the relevant size-scale. For this reason, in the last decade research efforts have been devoted to the development of experimental techniques suitable for the mechanical characterization of materials at micro- and nano-scale. There are many contributions stemming from this research area, the purpose of the present work is to give an overview of the most recent patented works. The focus will be directed to selected patents on the mechanical characterization of both micro- and nanosamples, like nanotubes and nanowires. Special emphasis will be given to the methods suited for the determination of elastic properties, fracture resistance and residual stresses of materials.
Effect of Different Surface Treatments on Repair Bond Strength of CAD/CAM Resin-Matrix Ceramics

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of different surface treatment methods on the micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) of resin-matrix ceramic (RMC) blocks repaired with resin composite. Three different prefabricated RMC blocks including Lava Ultimate (LU), Grandio Blocs (GB), and Shofu Block HC (HC) were thermo-cycled and divided into five surface treatment groups: Control (C), bur grinding (G), airborne particle abrasion (APA), Er,Cr:YSGG laser irritation (LI), and APA combined with LI (APA+LI). After surface treatments, topographic alterations were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Then, Universal Adhesive (Single Bond Universal) was applied and repair was simulated with nanohybrid composite (Grandio SO). Bonded specimens were cut into 1 mm2 sized beams (n = 16) and a μTBS test was conducted by using a universal test machine. Fracture types were evaluated by using a stereomicroscope. The bond- strength data was evaluated by two-way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc test (α = 0.05). The μTBS values were significantly affected by the surface treatment variable and the interaction terms of the variables (p ≤ 0.001). However, no significant effect of RMC type was detected (p > 0.05). Among all materials, GBAPA+LI indicated the highest μTBS value. Except for the GBC, all surface treatments showed clinically acceptable bond-strength values. However, the surface treatments applied to GB and LU before the repair processes increased the repair bond-strength values while causing a negative effect for HC. In addition, LI and APA+LI can be applied as an alternative route compared to other procedures recommended by the manufacturer for surface preparation in intraoral RMC repair.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Idiopathic pneumonia syndrome (IPS) is a frequent and potentially fatal complication of bone marrow transplantation (BMT). We have previously shown that experimental IPS is associated with increased levels of lipopolysaccaride (LPS) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFalpha) in the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid, and that administration of LPS to animals with extensive graft versus host exacerbated underlying lung injury (Blood 1996; 88: 3230). METHODS Lethally irradiated CBA mice received BMT from allogeneic (B10.BR) or syngeneic (CBA) donors. The role of TNFalpha in the exacerbation of pulmonary toxicity caused by LPS injection and in the evolution of IPS after allogeneic BMT was examined by neutralizing TNFalpha after BMT using a soluble binding protein (rhTNFR:Fc). RESULTS Five weeks after BMT, administration of rhTNFR:Fc dramatically reduced mortality and prevented the exacerbation of lung injury caused by LPS administration. This protective effect was associated with preservation of pulmonary function and with marked reductions of cells, neutrophils, and LPS in the BAL fluid of treated animals. TNFalpha neutralization from week 4 to 6 after allogeneic BMT effectively halted the progression of systemic GVHD and significantly reduced, but did not prevent lung injury that developed during the treatment period. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that TNFalpha is central to early LPS induced toxicity in this model and is a significant, but not the exclusive contributor to the development of IPS after allogeneic BMT.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the effect of chemical removal or mechanical modification of the smear layer on dentin adhesion with universal adhesives. Dentin surfaces (92 teeth in total) were burnished using 320-grit silicon carbide abrasive paper, and further divided into four groups: control (Con, no treatment), phosphoric acid etching (Etc, chemical removal of smear layer), polishing with 800-grit silicon carbide abrasive paper, and ultrasonic cleaning (Pol and Ult, mechanical modification of smear layer). The scanning electron microscope was used to observe the dentin surface. Two universal resin adhesives with 'mild' self-etching (Clearfil universal bond quick, pH = 2.3) and 'ultra-mild' self-etching (All bond universal, pH = 3.2) were used. Resin-dentin bonding interface was observed by the confocal laser scanning microscope. The micro-tensile bond test (n = 20) was performed to evaluate the bond strength before and after 10,000 times thermal cycles. Failure mode was evaluated by stereomicroscope. Three-way ANOVA was used to analyze the effect of different smear layer treatments, adhesives, and thermal aging on & mu;TBS. Smear layer treatment, adhesive, and thermal aging all had a significant effect on bond strength. Pol and Ult groups of two adhesives had no difference in bond durability, which were significantly higher than Etc and Con groups. Etc and Con groups of 'mild' adhesive had better bond durability than that of 'ultra-mild' adhesive. After 24 h storage, the & mu;TBS of 'mild' adhesive in the Ult group was the highest (44.39 & PLUSMN; 10.71 MPa), so as after thermal cycles (41.53 & PLUSMN; 13.29 MPa). However, the & mu;TBS of 'ultra-mild' in the Etc group was the lowest (16.70 & PLUSMN; 4.72 MPa) among all groups. After thermal cycles, it also showed the lowest & mu;TBS (12.83 & PLUSMN; 6.75 MPa) as well. The mechanical modification of the smear layer could lead to more efficient dentin adhesion with universal resin adhesives.
Influence of contamination and cleaning on bond strength to modified zirconia

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the influence of contamination and cleaning procedures on shear bond strength (SBS) to modified zirconia surfaces. Methods: One hundred zirconium-oxide ceramic disks fabricated with a rough modified surface (Nobel Bond), which allows more micromechanical interlocking for adhesive cementation, were divided into five groups. Groups were contaminated with organic (OC; human blood and saliva) and/or inorganic contaminants (IC; type IV dental stone). For cleaning, modified surfaces were etched with phosphoric acid for 1min (PA) or fired in a ceramic furnace up to 910 degrees C and cleaned in an ultrasonic bath in ethanol (FU). Following combinations of contamination and cleaning protocols were chosen: group 1: OC-PA; group 2: IC-FU; group 3: OC+IC-PA+FU; group 4: OC+IC-no cleaning; group 5: no contamination-no cleaning. Level of contamination and efficacy of cleaning were evaluated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Composite cylinders were bonded to the disks using dual curing adhesive resin cement (RelyX ARC). Fifty samples were subjected to 20,000 thermal cycles (TC). All samples were tested for SBS. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA with alpha=0.05. Results: SBS ranged from 16.6 to 18.8MPa (non-TC) and 10.6-21.7MPa (TC). TC did not lower SBS, except for group 1. XPS showed that OC produced higher levels of carbon, nitrogen, and silica, whereas IC generated elevated levels of calcium, sulfur, carbon, and potassium. Cleaning with both procedures reduced contamination significantly. Significance: A combination of FU and PA is an efficient method for cleaning contaminated modified zirconia surfaces.
Microtensile bond strength, 4-point bending and nanoleakage of resin-dentin interfaces: Effects of two matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors

Abstract:Chronic degradation of hybrid layer collagen by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) jeopardizes resin-dentin interfacial integrity and limits the durability of dental restorations. The 4-point bending strength (BS) is a valid but uncommon method of testing the mechanical behavior of resin-dentin interfaces. The present study aims to analyze the influence of two matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors on microtensile bond strength (µTBS), BS and nanoleakage. A total of 48M were divided into three groups according to bonding procedure. Teeth were horizontally sectioned to produce a flat dentin surface. In the control group, etch-and-rinse Prime&Bond One (Dentsply) bonding was used; in the self-etch group, methacryloyloxydodecylpyridinium bromide (MDPB)-containing Clearfil SE Protect (Kuraray) was used; and in the benzalkonium chloride (BAC)-etch group, BAC-etchant (Bisco) was used. A Ceram.X-One (Dentsply) composite was built as three successive layers and was light-cured. Samples were sectioned to produce microrods that were randomly divided into two groups for analysis at baseline and after 6 months of water immersion (n = 32), plus one slab for nanoleakage analysis (n = 8) via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and digital image analysis (Fiji). Data were analyzed using the Weibull distribution and a mixed-model ANOVA with a post hoc Tukey test. All groups showed deterioration of the initial bonds. The self-etch group had a worse baseline µTBS than the control but had the best BS after aging. BAC-etch did not improve bond stability of etch-and-rinse adhesive. The µTBS and BS test results after aging were moderately correlated. Mixed fractures prevailed with regard to µTBS, whereas adhesive fractures dominated with regard to BS. Nanoleakage was not eliminated in any group and increased after aging. MDPB self-etch resisted bond degradation better than etch-and-rinse adhesives, even after BAC-etching. Integrating BS in studies of µTBS and nanoleakage might provide more clinically relevant outcomes for predicting the performance of dental adhesives.
The Influence of Contamination and Different Cleaning Methods and the Effect of Plasma Treatment of CoCr Alloy on Tensile Bond Strength to Composite Resin

Abstract:Purpose: To investigate the influence of contamination and different cleaning methods on resin bonding to cobalt-chro- mium (CoCr) alloy disks. Materials and methods: A total of 160 CoCr disks were divided into 3 groups. The first group (N = 64) was air abraded with alumina particles and contaminated with a silicone disclosing agent and saliva; the second group (N = 64) was air abraded but not contaminated; the third group (N = 32) was neither air abraded nor contaminated. The first two groups were di- vided into 4 subgroups (N = 16) according to the cleaning method: ultrasonic bath in 99% isopropanol, use of a cleaning suspension of zirconium oxide particles, use of a cleaning suspension based on 10-MDP salt, and treatment with atmo- spheric plasma. The third group was divided into 2 subgroups (N = 16): treatment with atmospheric plasma and no treat- ment. All CoCr specimens were bonded to plexiglas tubes filled with a bonding resin that contained phosphate monomer. Tensile bond strength (TBS) was examined by tensile testing after 3 and 150 days of water storage plus 37,500 thermal cy- cles (N = 8). Results: After contamination, TBS was significantly reduced after 150 days of water storage. Groups without air abrasion showed initially low TBS and debonded spontaneously after 150 days of water storage. Conclusion: None of the cleaning methods was able to remove saliva and silicone disclosing agent on CoCr-alloy sur- faces. Surface activation by plasma treatment has no long-term effect on the bond strength.
Effects of Dentine Surface Cleaning on Bonding of a Self-Etch Adhesive to Root Canal Sealer-Contaminated Dentine.

Abstract:Objectives: To compare the effectiveness of different sealer cleaning methods on bonding of a self-etch adhesive to root canal sealer-contaminated dentine. Methods: Forty-nine extracted molars were divided into seven groups. Dentine surfaces were exposed and cotaminated with a thin layer of epoxy resin-based sealer (AH Plus (AHP)) or zinc oxide eugenol-based sealer (Pulp Canal Sealer (PCS)). Three cleaning protocols were examined: dry cotton pellet, 70% ethanol-saturated cotton pellet or a surfactant-based cleaner (KatanaTM Cleaner (KC), Kuraray Noritake Dental Inc.). Uncontaminated dentine served as control. The dentine surfaces were bonded with a two-step self-etch adhesive and restored with resin composite. Bond strength testing was performed using a microtensile approach. Two teeth from each group were used for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The pulpal floor of the teeth was covered with sealer and cleaned. The percentage of zinc/zirconium on the dentine surface was detected to indicate the amount of remnant sealer. Results: Tensile bond strength for uncontaminated dentine control was 46.4 +/- 7.3 MPa; bond strength decreased significantly for the dry cotton group (29.6 +/- 4.2 MPa for AHP, 24.7 +/- 4.7 MPa for PCS, p<0.05). Both ethanol and KC restored bonding performance after cleaning, with no significant difference from the control. Significantly lower MTBS was observed for the ZOE/ethanol subgroup (38.9 +/- 5.1 MPa). Cleaner surfaces and less zinc/zirconium elements were identified by SEM/EDX after cleaning with ethanol or KC. Conclusions: KatanaTM Cleaner decontaminates root canal sealer-smeared dentine surfaces effectively and restores the bonding performance of a self-etch adhesive to dentine. Clinical significance: The surfactant-based KatanaTM Cleaner, originally designed for cleaning zirconia surfaces prior to adhesive bonding, may be used as for cleaning dentine that has been contaminated with unset root canal sealers after root canal treatment to restore the bonding strength of a self-etch adhesive to sealer-contaminated dentine.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of polishing methods on the bonding effectiveness and durability of different resin cements to dentin. The dentin surfaces were either treated with a fine-grit diamond bur (polishing A) or further polished by polishing disks (polishing B), and then they were bonded with any one of the three resin cements, namely, etch-and-rinse, self-etch, and self-adhesive resin cements. After 24-hour or 2-year water storage, a microtensile bond strength (μTBS) test was performed. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to observe the morphology of the smear layer as well as the resin-dentin bonding interface. The results indicated that a thinner smear layer thickness was created by polishing B compared with polishing A. Although self-etch and self-adhesive resin cements achieved a relatively high primary bond strength before water degradation, etch-and-rinse resin cement obtained a stable bond strength during water degradation. The application of an additional polishing procedure could improve the bond strength of self-etch and self-adhesive resin cements.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of different cleaning measures on the bonding of resin cement to saliva- or blood-contaminated zirconia.METHODS: One hundred and forty-one specimens (10 × 10 × 1.5 mm3) were fabricated from KATANATM zirconia blocks and contaminated with human saliva or sheep blood. Six cleaning measures were examined: water-rinse, H3PO4, 5.25% NaOCl, ZirCleanTM, Ivoclean and KATANATM Cleaner. Tensile bond strength was evaluated for 13 groups (N=10): six cleaning measures against two contaminations (12 experimental groups) and one uncontaminated control group. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the control and water-rinsed specimen surfaces. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was conducted to identify carbon (C1s), nitrogen (N1s), phosphorous (P2p) and zirconium (Zr3d) peaks, from which the elemental ratios C/Zr, N/Zr and P/Zr were calculated.RESULTS: Although water-rinsing removed most of the contaminants from the zirconia surface, bond strength of resin cement was significantly lower compared with the control. Phosphoric acid was ineffective and NaOCl was less reliable in restoring bond strength. The three commercial cleaners (ZirCleanTM, Ivoclean, KATANATM Cleaner) out-performed the other cleaning measures and restored the bond strength of resin cement to zirconia except for the use of ZircleanTM on blood-contaminated surfaces. N/Zr decreased for all cleaned specimens and P/Zr ratio increased for phosphoric acid and KATANATM Cleaner groups. Differences in elemental ratios could indicate different cleaning mechanisms for the zirconia cleaners.CONCLUSION: All three commercial zirconia cleaners are effective in decontaminating saliva-contaminated or blood-contaminated zirconia and increasing the bond strength of resin cement to contaminated zirconia.CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The use of water, phosphoric acid or concentrated sodium hypochorite for cleaning saliva- or blood-contaminated dental zirconia is not recommended. ZirCleanTM works well on decontamination of saliva-contaminated zirconia. Ivoclean or KATANATM Cleaner are useful for decontamination of both saliva- and blood-contaminated zirconia during the intraoral try-in stage to recover the original bond strength of cementation.

Identification and phylogenetic analysis of filamentous Cyanobacteria using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) fingerprinting

Abstract:RAPD techniques were used for the detection of genetic heterogeneticity among the axenic culture of fresh water cyanobacterial isolates. The electrophoretic patterns for 12 cyanobacterial strains belonging to 2 genera (8 Oscillatoria strains and 4 Lyngbya strains) were used for molecular analysis using the RAPD technique. A total of 12 cyanobacterial isolates were selected and mass cultured in BG11 medium. Genomic DNA was extracted from fresh water cyanobacterial isolates and was amplified using primers D7, M13, OPC11, OPC12, OPC13, OPC14 and OPC15 and distinct PCR fingerprint were generated. Unique banding patterns were observed from all tested cyanobacterial species and their molecular weights of each band were used to calculate their genetic distance among them. Random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) was carried out for the phylogenetic characterization of these strains. RAPD fingerprinting results clearly showed the genetic variation among the cyanobacterial isolates.
Microtensile Bond Strength to Sealer-Contaminated Dentin after Using Different Cleaning Protocols

Abstract:Background/purpose: Sealer residues on dentin may affect bonding to restorative materials. This study aimed to evaluate the bond strength to sealer-contaminated dentin after using different cleaning protocols. Materials and methods: Freshly extracted bovine incisors were prepared and exposed the buccal pulp chamber dentin, obtaining segments measuring 5 mm x 5 mm with a height of 3 mm. The segments were randomly distributed into 4 groups (n Z 7) according to different protocols. Control group: no contamination was performed. In the three experimental groups, the segments were contaminated with epoxy resin-based sealer for 5 min, and different cleaning protocols were performed. Acetone group: acetone-saturated cotton pellets were used to wipe the sealer. Ultrasound group: ultrasonic ET-20D tip cleaning. Acetone combined with ultrasound group: cleaning with acetone-saturated cotton pellets and ultrasonic tip. All segments were bonded using a self-etch adhesive. Two samples in each group were scanned by swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) to evaluate sealer residues. A microtensile test was performed on the remaining 5 samples, which were built up with composite resin. Results: Sealer residues were observed in 3 of 14 (21.4%) sections of acetone group by SS-OCT. Compared to the control, ultrasound alone or in combination with acetone preserved the bond strength (P >.05). The ultrasound group exhibited the highest bond strength (39.38 MPa), which differed from that of the acetone group, which provided the lowest bond strength (32.88 MPa) (P <.05). Conclusion: Cleaning epoxy resin-based sealer-contaminated dentin surfaces using ultrasound or combined with acetone could preserve the bond strength.
