Post-operative hypoglycaemia in children undergoing adenotonsillectomy

Abstract:Introduction PRE-OPERATIVE hypoglycaemia in children is well recognized by anaesthetists. Several reports (Bevan and Burn, 1973; Watson, 1972; Thomas, 1974) have shown that approximately one-third of children starved for operation have blood glucose levels of less than 3-33 mmol./l. at induction of anaesthesia. Less emphasis has been placed on the post-operative phenomenon of hypoglycaemia in children. This paper suggests that the diagnosis should be remembered in ENT surgery for children because the symptoms for hypoglycaemia may often be overlooked in the post-operative period with a semi-conscious child.
