Abstract:Glycerol valorisation is crucial for long-term economic viability due to the rise in biodiesel synthesis on a global scale. Therefore, it is highly desirable to convert bioglycerol into platform chemicals like solketal, a fuel additive which will help sustain the biodiesel industry. Herein, glycerol is transformed into solketal utilising a heterogeneous catalyst derived from SO3H-functionalized derived aromatic carbonaceous material with auxiliary hydrophilic groups and microwave irradiation. An ideal glycerol to acetone molar ratio of 1:5 was found for the acetalization process that produces solketal. A conversion of glycerol 98.1.4% with 100% selectivity to solketal was obtained using an 8 wt% catalyst dose at 70 °C for just 10 min using the method of microwave heating (50 W, 100 pressure). The acetalization reaction's activation energy was found to be 35.8 kJ mol−1. The reusability of the catalyst was studied exhaustively over the course of six cycles, and EDX results revealed that there was only a minor loss of activity in the 6th reaction cycle due to moderate leaching of active sites.

Abstract:The increase in biodiesel production worldwide makes valorisation of the by-product of this process (glycerol) essential for economic sustainability. Hence, conversion of bioglycerol to platform chemicals such as (2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl)methanol (solketal), a fuel additive, is highly desirable. In this study, glycerol is converted to solketal using a sulfonic acid-functionalized aromatic carbonaceous material (SAFACAM) bearing ancillary hydrophilic groups and acting as a heterogeneous catalyst under microwave irradiation. For the production of solketal by acetalization, an optimal glycerol:acetone molar ratio of 1:5 was recorded. Using a catalyst dosage of 8 wt% at 70 °C for just 10 mins under microwave irradiation (50 W, 100 psi) returned a 98.1 ± 0.4 % conversion of bioglycerol with 100 % selectivity to solketal. The activation energy of the acetalization reaction was determined to be 35.8 kJ mol −1 . Catalyst recovery was probed over six cycles, with a modest loss in activity (82.3 ± 0.2 % conversion in the sixth cycle) resulting from limited active site leaching, as confirmed by EDS data.

Abstract:The valorization of the large amount of crude glycerol formed from the biodiesel industry is of primordial necessity. One possible direction with high interest to the biorefinery sector is the production of fuel additives such as solketal, through the acetalization of glycerol with acetone. This is a chemical process that conciliates high sustainability and economic interest, since solketal contributes to the fulfillment of a Circular Economy Model through its use in biodiesel blends. The key to guarantee high efficiency and high sustainability for solketal production is the use of recovery and recyclable heterogeneous catalysts. Reported works indicate that high yields are attributed to catalyst acidity, mainly the ones containing Brönsted acidic sites. On the other hand, the catalyst stability and its recycling capacity are completely dependent of the support material and the acidic sites incorporation methodology. This review intends to conciliate the information spread on this topic and indicate the most assertive strategies to achieve high solketal production in short reaction time during various reaction cycles.
Easy and Fast Production of Solketal from Glycerol Acetalization via Heteropolyacids

Abstract:This work presents an effective and fast procedure to valorize the main waste produced from the biodiesel industry, i.e., the glycerol. The acetalization of glycerol with acetone represents an effective strategy to produce the valuable solketal, a fuel additive component. In this work, the catalytic efficiency of different commercial heteropolyacids (HPAas) was compared under a solvent-free system. The HPAs used were H3[PW12O40] (PW12), H3[PMo12O40] (PMo12) and H4[SiW12O40] (SiW12). The influence of reactional parameters such as reactants stoichiometry, catalyst concentration and reaction temperature were investigated in order to optimize experimental conditions to increase cost-efficiency and sustainability. HPAs demonstrated to be highly efficient for this type of reaction, presenting a high and fast glycerol conversion, with high selectivity to solketal under sustainable conditions (solvent-free system and room temperature medium). The activity of HPAs using 3% to glycerol weight and a glycerol/acetone ratio of 1:15 followed the order: PW12 (99.2%) > PMo12 (91.4%) > SiW12 (90.7%) as a result of the strong acidic sites after 5 min. In fact, only 5 min of reaction were needed to achieve 97% of solketal product in the presence of the PW12 as a catalyst. This last system presents an effective, selective and sustainable catalytic system to valorize glycerol.

Abstract:To handle huge amount of glycerol produced in biodiesel industry, glycerol is transformed to value-added products. In this regard, glycerol acetalization to solketal is industrially attractive. As in this process various by-products can be formed, designing highly selective catalysts is of great importance. In this line, we wish to report a novel catalyst that benefits from strong acidity, high specific surface area and thermal stability, which can selectively form solketal in glycerol acetalization. To prepare the catalyst, hierarchical zeolite was prepared via a novel method, in which partially dealuminated NaY was treated with PluronicF-127 and then reacted with NH 4 NO 3 to furnish the H-form zeolite. Hierarchical faujasite was then achieved through calcination and template removal. Subsequently, it was functionalized with ionic liquid and used for the immobilization of heteropolyacid. The results indicated the importance of the mesoprosity of zeolite and the presense of ionic liquid functionality for achiveing high solketal yield. Moreover, among three investigated heteropolyacids, phosphomolybdic acid exhibited the highest catalytic activity. In fact, using 10 wt% catalyst at 55 °C and glycerol to acetone molar ratio of 1:20, solketal with yield of 98% was furnished under solvent-less condition. Besides, the catalyst was recyclable with low leaching of heteropolyacid.

Abstract:In this work, an efficient and green glycerolysis reaction catalyzed by zinc glycerolate was developed to prepare biodiesel from oleic acid. The active phase of zinc glycerolate was investigated by XRD, FTIR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR. An interesting result was obtained that zinc glycerolate was first dissolved to form zinc oleate and then regenerated to zinc glycerolate during the reaction, which was essential for the conversion of oleic acid. The relationship between dissolved zinc glycerolate and conversion of oleic acid was determined. The regeneration of zinc glycerolate was achieved when the molar ratio of glycerol to oleic acid was higher than 0.6:1. A plausible pathway for the glycerolysis reaction catalyzed by zinc glycerolate was proposed. Zinc glycerolate could be recycled 10 times with no obvious decrease in catalytic activity, and the oleic acid conversion of 98% was achieved. In addition, zinc glycerolate was applied to catalyze glycerolysis reaction of different feedstock and demonstrated excellent performance. The results show that zinc glycerolate is a promising catalyst in glycerolysis reaction for biodiesel production.

Abstract:The composites of heteropolyacids (H3PW12, H3PMo12) incorporated into amine-functionalized silica materials were used for the first time as heterogeneous catalysts in the valorization of glycerol (a major waste from the biodiesel industry) through acetalization reaction with acetone. The polyoxotungstate catalyst H3PW12@AptesSBA-15 exhibited higher catalytic efficiency than the phosphomolybdate, achieving 97% conversion and 97% of solketal selectivity, after 60 min at 25 °C, or 91% glycerol conversion and the same selectivity, after 5 min, performing the reaction at 60 °C. A correlation between catalytic performance and catalyst acidity is presented here. Furthermore, the stability of the solid catalyst was investigated and discussed.

Abstract:Glycerol, derived from biodiesel production, is a renewable feedstock for the production of value-added chemicals. Herein, we report an investigation of the acetalization of glycerol with n-octanal by homogeneous acid catalysis in the absence of a solvent, using p-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid, and sulfuric acid, respectively, as catalysts. p-Dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid, a surfactant-type Bronsted acid, proved to be an excellent catalyst capable of efficiently promoting the reaction under solvent-free conditions, and the yields of glycerol acetals reached 99% under the optimal conditions. The distribution of five-and six-membered cyclic acetal regioisomers varied depending on the reaction time and temperature. Moreover, the amphiphilic properties of the products, with different ratios of five-to six-membered cyclic acetals, have been evaluated by surface tension measurements.

Abstract:Glycerol is an oversupplied commodity from biodiesel production with beneficial properties for the synthesis of versatile utility biochemicals. The functional properties of glycerol with three hydroxyl groups could be tailored toward producing fuels such as hydrogen, syngas, C1-C3 hydrocarbon fuel, bio-oil and methane. This study elucidates the reported thermochemical pathways such as pyrolysis, gasification, combustion, steam and aqueous reforming, and supercritical water gasification for fuel production from biodiesel-derived glycerol. The mechanism of these pathways, process conditions, catalytic integration, and limitations were investigated. Also, reactor strategies such as fixed bed reactors, fluidized bed, and solar reactor strategies used for the thermochemical valorization of glycerol was discussed. The studies revealed that hydrogen up to 70% yield could be generated from glycerol using noble metals and nickel-based catalysts. Catalyst deactivation due to coking could be minimized by the addition of alkaline metals, which discourages methanation reaction. Reaction parameters such as temperature, catalyst amount, time on stream, and glycerol/water or steam ratio influence the product distribution. The glycerol steam reforming is more energy-intensive and requires temperatures in the range of 450–1000 °C, whereas the aqueous reforming is propagated in the range of 180–250 °C. The circulating fluidized bed reactors limit coking due to self-regeneration of the catalysts in situ, however, they are cost-intensive. Life cycle assessment analysis revealed that supercritical water reforming (SCWR) of glycerol offers a sustainable pathway to reduce CO2 by 95% and integration of SCWR in biodiesel plants to produce hydrogen for heating can realize a net present value between 7.70 and 15.70 million USD. Further studies to analyze the economic impact of the individual pathways to optimize the production of fuels from glycerol are required. It is hoped that this study will engage industries and researchers to increasingly use glycerol as a substrate for the production of fuels for transportation.

Abstract:The exponential rise of the biodiesel production has resulted in a considerable amount of glycerol as a by-product, which must be valorized to ensure the sector's long-term viability. As a result, cost-effective glycerol conversions for significant value-added chemicals are essential for the biodiesel production in the long run. Solketal, a glycerol by-product, is obtained as a potential fuel additive in the biodiesel industry. Recently, several heterogeneous acid-catalysts stand out as a promising catalyst for solketal production where biomass-based catalyst gained attraction owing to their biodegradability, eco-friendly, and abundant availability. Furthermore, magnetic nanoparticles-derived catalysts along with sulfonated functionalized catalyzed, zeolites, resins, enzymatic, etc. have proved their efficiency in solketal production. In this review, a wider study on the recent advances of the catalysts has been discussed along with their preparation, various reaction parameters, its application, and efficiency for biodiesel industry. This study opens up incredible prospects for us to use renewable energy sources, which will benefit the industry, the environment, and the economy.

Abstract:Bioenergy and biochemicals play a central and critical role to establish energy security and enable the required green and low carbon transition of the gigantic chemical industry amid the great concerns over climate change and sustainable development. Here, we describe the selective catalytic conversion of glycerol to 2,5-hexanedione and other more advanced C6-C12 poly-oxygenates by making use of water hydrogen under relatively mild conditions, using an effective copper metal–organic framework (Cu-MOF) derived catalyst. 2,5-hexanedione is a versatile platform chemical and a key intermediate for producing high energy–density aviation fuels from biomass resources. The catalyst was found to exhibit rarely seen catalytic activities both for the desirable glycerol conversion and for the aqueous reforming reactions for in-situ hydrogen generation, which is essential to drive the conversion to polyoxygenates consisting primarily of polyketones and polyalcohols. The selectivity could reach 43.4% for 2,5-hexanedione formation and over 70% for total C8-C12 poly-oxygenates. Characterizations show that the remarkable catalytic capability of MOF derived catalyst for the formation of novel advanced chemicals arose not only from the highly dispersion of copper in the substrate but also from the unique chemical states of the copper species, which together lead to the formation of greatly enhanced active surface sites with novel catalytic activities that cannot be achieved with similar catalysts prepared with conventional methodologies. Based on the results, the reaction mechanisms responsible for the desirable formation of 2,5-hexanedione were proposed. It is believed that the investigation opens up the possibility of recycling the crude glycerol from biodiesel production to produce novel advanced chemicals and/or high energy density transport fuels or fuel additives.

Abstract:Herein, we report a base‐catalyzed transesterification reaction of glycerol, a waste product of the biodiesel industry, with various dialkyl carbonates, which act both as reactants and solvents, to convert glycerol carbonate into an industrially useful molecular building block. The catalyst, being used for the first time, is also a waste product from industry, present in bauxite residues and in the Portland cement, simply known as tricalcium aluminate. Despite being well‐known and readily available, this solid is only extremely poorly researched catalyst, nevertheless, using dimethyl and diethyl carbonate, glycerol conversion rates >80% and glycerol carbonate yields >60% could be achieved in just 1 hour (under air atmosphere, and reflux). In a comparison of the performance with other catalysts commonly researched today, as well as with other components of red mud and cements, the results showed that tricalcium aluminate is excellent, cheap and largely environmentally friendly material for this purpose. Reusability studies of the catalysts have also shown that they provide high conversion and product yields even after repeated use, although different material characterization techniques showed intense glycerol‐catalyst surface interaction and intermediate product formation, the deactivating side effects of which could be avoided by catalyst regeneration steps.

Abstract:Research on biomass-based catalyst is beneficial for the sustainability of biodiesel industry owing to its wide availability of feedstock, non-toxicity and biodegradability. Cellulose based heterogeneous solid carbon catalyst was prepared from cellulose by treating cellulose with concentrated sulphuric acid in innocuous hydrothermal conditions. It shows promising potential as a suitable catalyst for the synthesis of solketal (a biofuel additive) by acetalization of glycerol, the waste product of biodiesel production. 97.1 ± 0.4% of solketal was produced under the optimum conditions of 1:5 M ratio of glycerol and acetone, catalyst loading of 7 wt% at 70 °C in 10 min. 90% of catalytic activity was retained even after five catalytic cycles making the catalyst highly efficient. With further investments; this method may be used for the preparation of biofuel additive in an industrial level.

Abstract:We developed a nanostructured catalyst consisting of WO3 nanoparticles and Nb2O5 nanorods for efficient glycerol acetalization to produce a fuel additive (solketal) at room temperature. Particularly, the WO3/Nb2O5 nanocatalyst calcined at 400 °C (WO3/Nb2O5–4) contains W5+ species and optimum acid sites, which enhanced glycerol conversion (92.3%) with 95.6% of solketal selectivity at room temperature. The structure stability of the WO3/Nb2O5–4 catalyst during the reaction is showcased by hot-filtration study and XRD/XPS characterization. However, the inadequate regeneration of the Brønsted acid sites led to a gradual decrease in the recyclable activity of the WO3/Nb2O5–4 catalyst.

Abstract:Trimethylolpropane fatty acid triester (TFATE) is a promising biolubricant as an environmentally friendly substitute to conventional mineral-based lubricants. However, the issues of extensive energy consumption from vacuum maintenance and feedstock saponification caused by strong alkaline catalysts exist in current TFATEbased biolubricant synthesis. Here, sustainable production of biolubricant was achieved with methyl oleate (MO) from non-edible oil sources as the feedstock and moderate alkaline K2CO3 as the catalyst. Nitrogen gas stripping method instead of vacuum was adopted for methanol removal. The effects of agitation speed, N-2 flow rate, catalyst amount, MO to trimethylolpropane (TMP) molar ratio and temperature on MO conversion and TFATE selectivity were examined. The TFATE selectivity reached 95.6% under the optimized conditions. Leaching tests indicated neglectable K2CO3 dissolution in reaction products. The kinetic parameters for the three consecutive transesterification reactions were calculated. In addition, the synthesized biolubricants exhibit low acid value and volatility, moderate iodine value, superior thermal stability, and good rheological and frictional properties.
Development of Porous WO3/SAPO-34 Solid Catalyst for the Conversion of Glycerol to Fuel Performance Improving Bio-additive (Solketal)

Abstract:The present investigation describes the development of environmentally benign WO 3 /SAPO-34 solid acid catalyst for glycerol valorization to solketal. Various spectroscopic techniques (XRD, FT-IR, TGA, BET, SEM, EDX and TPD) were employed to evaluate its physiochemical characteristic and determination of acid sites density of the designed catalyst. The optimization of reaction influencing parameters was prudently investigated. The experimental results demonstrated that the catalyst with 20 wt% WO 3 loading exhibited an excellent acetalization performance, providing solketal yield of 96.7% with glycerol/acetone ratio of 1:8, catalyst loading of 5 wt% and reaction time of 4 h at 60 °C temperature. The FTIR and GC–MS analysis justified the successful formation of solketal. Similarly, the WO 3 /SAPO-34 catalyst sustained quite good repeatability for up to 5 reaction cycles with no significant loss in the activity.

Abstract:In this work, a series of vanadium-substituted phosphomolybdic acids were synthesized and tested as the catalysts for the synthesis of solketal, a green fuel bioadditive, from the condensation reaction of glycerol with acetone. The objective was to demonstrate that an easily synthesizable solid catalyst can efficiently promote glycerol condensation with acetone at room temperature. The activity of pristine heteropolyacid (i.e., H3PMo12O40) and its vanadium-substituted cesium salts (Cs3+nPMo12-nVnO40; n = 0–3) was evaluated in condensation reactions carried out at room temperature. Among the catalysts tested, Cs4PMo11VO40 was the most active and selective towards a five-member ring solketal isomer (dioxolane). A high yield of solketal (i.e., 95% conversion and 95% selectivity to solketal) was achieved in glycerol condensation with acetone at room temperature within a short reaction time (2 h). The influence of the main reaction parameters, such as the acetone–glycerol molar ratio, catalyst load, and reaction temperatures, was investigated. The greatest activity of the Cs4PMo11VO40 catalyst was correlated to its greatest acidity.

Results show that Mo species were introduced as planned and existed in a homogeneously dispersed state in MoO3-ZrO2 materials. The acidic properties of MoO3-ZrO2 were explored through NH3-TPD and pyridine-chemisorbed FT-IR spectroscopy, and the formation of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites was confirmed by density functional theory calculations. Given their excellent acidity, MoO3-ZrO2 catalysts were employed for the acetal reaction of glycerol. Among the tested catalysts, the 20 %-MoO3-ZrO2 catalyst exhibited the optimal catalytic performance and reusability, achieving a conversion of 89 % for glycerol and a selectivity of 97 % for solketal. Consequently, MoO3-ZrO2 is a green solid acid catalyst with promising applications in solvent-free solketal production from glycerol.

Abstract:Bioethanol, which is currently produced commercially from a growing variety of renewable biomass and waste sources, is an appealing feedstock for the production of fuels and chemicals. The literature clearly shows that bioethanol is a versatile building block to be used in biorefineries. The ethanol conversion using several catalysts with acidic, basic, and redox characteristics results in a diverse assortment of high-value bioproducts. High-acidity tungsten zirconia-based catalysts are stated to compete with traditional zeolitic catalysts and can be employed in the dehydration of ethanol to ethylene, but for a low reaction temperature acetic acid is formed, which causes corrosion issues. WO3-ZrO2 (W/Zr = 1, atomic) catalysts modified with MoO3 were prepared by a sol-gel-like procedure and tested in a gas phase ethanol conversion in the presence of air. The citrate derived xerogels were annealed at 853 K for 12 h, allowing low surface area (<10 m2/g) materials with a Mo-W mixed-oxide-rich surface over tetragonal nanostructured zirconia. Catalysts with MoO3-loading produced mainly acetaldehyde, instead of ethylene, as a result of the high reducibility of Mo6+ when compared to W6+. During the reaction, the Mo6+ becomes partially reduced, but Mo6+/Mo5+ species are still active for methanol conversion with increased ethylene selectivity due to the high acidity of tetrahedral MOX species formed during the reaction. Adding water to ethanol, to simulate bioethanol, only leads to a slight inhibition in ethanol conversion over the MoO3/(WO3-ZrO2) catalysts. The results show that molybdenum oxide deposited on tungstated zirconia catalyst is active, with low sensitivity to water, for the valorization of bioethanol into high-value chemicals, such as ethylene and acetaldehyde, and whose selectivity can be tuned by changing the amount of MoO3 that is loaded. The MoO3/(WO3-ZrO2) catalysts prepared show catalytic behavior similar to that of noble metal-based catalysts reported in the literature for the dehydrogenation of bioethanol in high-value chemicals.

Abstract:Advancement of technology for the sustainable production of biodiesel is of significant importance in fighting against rising fuel costs due to the fast depletion of fossil fuels. In this regard, the application of highly efficient MOFs (metal–organic frameworks)-based materials as acidic, basic, or supported heterogeneous catalysts plays a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency of biodiesel production processes. In this report, we demonstrate the synthesis and catalytic application of Zr-fumarate-MOF (also known as MOF-801) as a heterogeneous catalyst for the transesterification reaction of used vegetable oil (UVO) for the production of biodiesel. The formation of MOF-801 and its structural stability is confirmed by a variety of characterization techniques including XRD, SEM, EDX, FT-IR, BET, and TGA analyses. The results revealed the formations of highly crystalline, cubic MOF-801 possessing thermal stability below 500 °C. The MOF-801 catalyst demonstrated moderate catalytic activity during transesterification of UVO (~60%) at 50 wt.% of methanol: oil, 10 wt.% catalyst loading, 180 °C reaction temperature, and 8 h of reaction time. Furthermore, the catalyst has exhibited adequate reusability with a slight reduction in the reaction yield of up to ~10% after three cycles.
