Abstract:Background: The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index has been demonstrated to be a reliable surrogate marker of insulin resistance (IR) and an effective predictive index of cardiovascular (CV) disease risk. However, its long-term prognostic value in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) remains uncertain. Methods: A total of 6697 consecutive patients with CHF were enrolled in this study. Patients were divided into tertiles according to their TyG index. The incidence of primary outcomes, including all-cause death and CV death, was recorded. The TyG index was calculated as ln [fasting triglycerides (mg/dL) × fasting blood glucose (mg/dL)/2]. Results: During a median follow-up of 3.9 years, a total of 2158 (32.2%) all-cause deaths and 1305 (19.5%) CV deaths were documented. The incidence of primary events from the lowest to the highest TyG index tertiles were 50.61, 64.64, and 92.25 per 1000 person-years for all-cause death and 29.05, 39.40, and 57.21 per 1000 person-years for CV death. The multivariate Cox hazards regression analysis revealed hazard ratios for all-cause and CV deaths of 1.84 (95% CI 1.61-2.10; P for trend < 0.001) and 1.94 (95% CI 1.63-2.30; P for trend < 0.001) when the highest and lowest TyG index tertiles were compared. In addition, the predictive ability of the TyG index against all-cause death was more prominent among patients with metabolic syndrome and those with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction phenotype (both P for interaction < 0.05). Furthermore, adding the TyG index to the established model for all-cause death improved the C‑statistic value (0.710 for the established model vs. 0.723 for the established model + TyG index, P < 0.01), the integrated discrimination improvement value (0.011, P < 0.01), the net reclassification improvement value (0.273, P < 0.01), and the clinical net benefit (probability range, 0.07-0.36). Conclusions: The TyG index was significantly associated with the risk of mortality, suggesting that it may be a reliable and valuable predictor for risk stratification and an effective prognostic indicator in patients with CHF.

Abstract:Background Heart failure (HF) is associated with generalized insulin resistance (IR). Recent studies demonstrated that triglyceride glucose (TyG) is an effective alternative index of IR. However, the relationship between the TyG index and in-hospital mortality in patients with HF is unclear. In the present study, we aimed to clarify the association between the TyG index and in-hospital mortality in patients with HF. Methods A retrospective study consisting of 4,411 patients diagnosed with HF from 2015 to 2018 was conducted. All-cause mortality during hospitalization was the primary endpoint. The association between the TyG index and in-hospital mortality was assessed using the logistic regression analysis. Results The risk of in-hospital mortality was significantly associated with increased TyG index (OR: 1.886, 95% CI: 1.421–2.501, p < 0.001) under logistic regression with multivariable adjustment. When divided into three groups based on the TyG index, Tertile 3 demonstrated significantly higher in-hospital mortality than the other two Tertiles (OR: 2.076, 95% CI: 1.284–3.354, p = 0.001). Moreover, the TyG index improved the prediction efficiency of the Get with the Guidelines-Heart Failure (GWTG-HF) score (absolute integrated discrimination improvement = 0.006, p < 0.001; category-free net reclassification improvement = 0.075, p = 0.005). In subgroup analysis, the TyG index exhibited similar predictive performance of in-hospital mortality when groups were stratified based on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and coronary artery disease (CAD). Conclusion TyG is a potential index for predicting in-hospital mortality in patients with HF, independent of T2DM or CAD status. The TyG index may be combined with the GWTG-HF score to further improve its predictive efficacy.

Abstract:Background: Triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is linked to a poor prognosis for cardiovascular condition and is a valid indicator of insulin resistance. This study evaluated the potential predicting usefulness of the TyG index for all-cause mortality, both short- and long-term, for those concerning critical coronary artery disease (CAD). Methods: In this study, information from 5452 critically-ill individuals with CAD in intensive care units were gathered from the Medical Information Marketplace in Intensive Care (MIMIC-IV) database. Depending on the TyG index degree, the patients were categorized into three categories. Clinical outcomes included short-term (30-day) and long-term (365-day) all-cause mortality. The corresponding relationships involving the TyG index and clinical outcomes were examined by deploying restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression analysis and Cox proportional risk regression. Results: An increased TyG index was associated with increased 30-day (Tertile 1: 6.1%, Tertile 2: 7.3%, Tertile 3: 9.2%, P = 0.001) and 365-day (Tertile 1: 15.2%, Tertile 2: 17.0%, Tertile 3: 19.6%, P = 0.002) death rates across all causes. Cox regression with multiple variables indicates that higher TyG indices were linked to higher all-caused mortality hazard ratios throughout the short and long terms, with a larger predictive value for the former. RCS regression analyses suggested that the risk of death was notably and linearly that is associated with TyG index. Conclusions: The TyG index is a reliable predictor of all-cause mortality at different stages in critically ill CAD patients, with a higher predictive ability for short-term mortality. Early intervention in patients with elevated TyG index may improve their survival outcomes. Future research should delve into understanding its pathophysiological mechanisms and develop intervention strategies based on the TyG index, providing new insights and strategies to enhance the outlook for critically ill CAD patients.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the association of triglyceride–glucose (TyG) index on admission with outcomes of critically ill patients. Design A retrospective study. Setting A population-based cohort study of Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care III Database (MIMIC III). Participants All intensive care unit admissions were extracted from MIMIC III. Main outcome measures The TyG index was calculated as ln [triglycerides (mg/dL)xglucose (mg/dL)/2]. The primary endpoint was 360-day mortality. Results A total of 3902 patients with an average age of 63.1±15.9 years old were enrolled, including 1623 (41.6%) women. The 360-day mortality was lower in a higher TyG group. Compared with the lowest TyG group, the HR of 360-day mortality was 0.79 (95% CI (0.66, 0.95); p=0.011) in the fully adjusted Cox model and 0.71 (95% CI (0.59, 0.85); p<0.001) in the stepwise Cox model. In the subgroup analysis, an interaction effect was detected between TyG index and gender. Conclusions A lower TyG index was associated with the risk of 360-day mortality in critically ill patients, which could be a predictor of long-term survival of critically ill patients.

Abstract:Abstract We describe two new species of the nemesiid spider genus Chaco from Rocha Province, Uruguay. These new species are diagnosed based on genital morphology, male tibial apophysis spination, and burrow entrance. We test cospecificity of one species, Chaco costai,via laboratory mating experiments. The new species are diagnosed and illustrated and habitat characteristics, and capture behavior are described. We conduct a cladistic analysis based on a previously published morphological character matrix that now includes the newly described species.

Abstract:Objective: The association between the Triglyceride-Glucose (TyG) Index and mortality rates in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains unclear. This study investigates the association between the TyG index and the incidence of all-cause and CVD-specific mortality among individuals with a history of CVD. Design: Population-based cohort study. Setting: Data were sourced from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007-2018) and linked mortality data, with follow-up continuing until 31 December 2019. Participants: The study population comprised 3422 individuals aged 20 years or older with a documented history of CVD. Outcome measures: We examined the association between the TyG index and the risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Results: Over a median follow-up of 5.79 years, 1030 deaths occurred, including 339 due to CVD. Cox regression analysis, adjusted for multiple confounders, showed that individuals in the highest TyG index quartile, compared with those in the lowest, had HRs of 0.76 (95% CI: 0.60 to 0.96) for all-cause mortality and 0.58 (95% CI: 0.39 to 0.89) for CVD mortality. There was a significant inverse relationship between higher TyG index levels and lower mortality risks. For each unit increase in the TyG index, the adjusted HRs for all-cause and CVD mortality decreased by 18% (HR 0.82; 95% CI: 0.71 to 0.94) and 27% (HR 0.73; 95% CI: 0.57 to 0.92), respectively. Conclusions: TyG index values are negatively associated with all-cause and CVD mortality risks among individuals with previous CVD. Further interventional studies are needed to clarify the impact of TyG levels on cardiovascular health.
Triglyceride-glucose index associates with incident heart failure: A cohort study

Abstract:Aims: Triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index has been proposed as a simple surrogate marker of insulin resistance. However, few studies have investigated the association of TyG index with heart failure (HF). We aimed to explore the relationship between TyG index and incident HF. Methods: A total of 138,620 participants from the Kailuan study were included for analysis. TyG index was calculated as ln [fasting triglyceride (mg/dL) × fasting glucose (mg/dL) / 2]. Cox proportional hazard models were used to investigate the association between TyG index and the risk of HF. Restricted cubic spline analysis was applied to evaluate the dose-response relationship between TyG index and the risk of HF. Results: There were 1602 incident HF cases among the 138,620 participants during a median follow-up of 8.78 years. Compared with those in the lowest quartile group of TyG index, participants with the highest quartile of TyG index had a 24% higher risk of HF (HR=1.24, 95%CI=1.07-1.44) after adjusting for other risk factors. Restricted cubic spline analysis showed a significant J-shaped dose-response relationship between TyG index and risk of HF (P for non-linearity < 0.001). The significant association was still observed among the men and participants with or without abdominal obesity in subgroup analyses. Conclusion: The TyG index was positively associated with the risk of HF, which indicates that the TyG index might be useful to identify people at high-risk for developing HF.

Abstract:Abstract Background Triglyceride glucose (TyG) is associated with stroke, atherosclerosis, and adverse clinical outcomes. However, its correlation with cerebrovascular disease (CVD) mortality remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between TyG index and mortality in patients with CVD. Methods Patient data sourced from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care -IV database were categorized based on TyG quartiles. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis was used to estimate survival disparities among the TyG subgroups. Cox proportional risk modeling was used to examine the association between the TyG index and mortality. Generalized summation models were applied to fit the smoothed curves. log-likelihood ratio test were used to analyze the non-linear relationship. Results The study comprised 1,965 patients (50.18% were male). The 28-day and 90-day mortality rates were 20.10% and 24.48%, respectively. The TyG index exhibited a linear relationship with the 28-day mortality (Hazards ratio (HR), 1.16; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.99–1.36) and the 90-day mortality (HR, 1.18; 95% CI, 1.02–1.37). In the TyG Q4 group, each 1 mg/dl increase was linked to a 35% rise in the risk of 28-day mortality and a 38% increase in the risk of 90-day mortality. Subgroup analyses highlighted a more substantial association between TyG index and 90-day mortality in the diabetic group. Conclusion Our findings underscore the positive association between TyG and the 28- and 90-day mortality rates in patients with CVD. This insight may prove pivotal for identifying at-risk populations and enhancing risk prediction in the clinical management of CVD.

Abstract:Aims This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the triglyceride glucose (TyG) index and all‐cause mortality in patients with heart failure (HF). Methods and Results A total of 1274 patients with HF diagnosed at Hebei General Hospital were enrolled in this study. The patients were divided into four groups by quartiles based on the TyG index. The endpoint was all‐cause mortality during the follow‐up period. The median follow‐up period was 1079 days, with a total of 543 (42.7%) patients experiencing all‐cause mortality. Abstract:The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, a reliable surrogate biomarker of insulin resistance (IR), is highlighted recently as related to cardiac disorders. However, the associations of the TyG index and its combination with blood pressure (BP) on cardiovascular and all-cause mortality in hypertension remain unclear. In this study, we included 9,635 hypertension patients from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999–2018. During a median follow-up of 8.00 years, a total number of 853 and 2,489 in cardiovascular and all-cause deaths occurred, respectively. After full adjustments, the individual TyG index was positively associated with cardiovascular and all-cause mortality with J-shaped dose–response relationships. The lowest risk thresholds of the TyG index for cardiovascular and all-cause mortality were 9.5551 and 9.3405, respectively. In joint analyses, the highest risks of cardiovascular and all-cause mortality were observed among those with elevated levels of both BP and IR [1.64 (1.18, 2.28), P = 0.0031; 1.39 (1.14, 1.70), P = 0.0011; respectively]. In sensitivity and subgroup analyses, the results were generally robust. Our data appeal a hypothesis that future treatments for hypertension may require a combination of BP controlled and IR improvement.

Abstract:Background: The prognostic value of triglyceride-glucose (TyG) related indices in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is still unclear. This study aimed to determine the associations between TyG-related indices and long-term mortality in this population. Methods: The data came from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) and National Death Index (NDI). Baseline TyG, TyG combining with body mass index (TyG-BMI), and TyG combining with waist circumference (TyG-WC) indices were calculated, and mortality status was determined through 31 December 2019. Multivariate Cox and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression models were performed to evaluate the relationship between TyG-related indices and long-term mortality among participants with NAFLD/MASLD. In addition, we examined the association between TyG-related indices and all-cause mortality within subgroups defined by age, sex, race/ethnicity, and fibrosis-4 index (FIB-4). Results: There were 10,390 participants with completed ultrasonography and laboratory data included in this study. NAFLD was diagnosed in 3672/10,390 (35.3%) participants, while MASLD in 3556/10,390 (34.2%) amongst the overall population. The multivariate Cox regression analyses showed high levels of TyG-related indices, particularly in TyG-BMI and TyG-WC indices were significantly associated with the all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, and diabetes mortality in either NAFLD or MASLD. The RCS curves showed a nonlinear trend between three TyG-related indices with all-cause mortality in either NAFLD or MASLD. Subgroup analyses showed that TyG-BMI and TyG-WC indices were more suitable for predicting all-cause mortality in patients without advanced fibrosis. Conclusion: Our study highlights the clinical value of TyG-related indices in predicting the survival of the NAFLD/MASLD population. TyG-BMI and TyG-WC indices would be the surrogate biomarkers for the follow-up of the population without advanced fibrosis.
High triglyceride-glucose index is associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction

Abstract:Background and aims: Triglyceride glucose (TyG) index is considered a new surrogate marker of insulin resistance that associated with the development of vascular disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of TyG index in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Methods and results: A total of 3181 patients with AMI were included in the analysis. Patients were stratified into 2 groups according to their TyG index levels: the TyG index <8.88 group and the TyG index ≥8.88 group. The incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) during a median of 33.3-month follow-up were recorded. Multivariable Cox regression models revealed that the TyG index was positively associated with all-cause death [HR (95% CI): 1.51 (1.10,2.06), p = 0.010], cardiac death [HR (95% CI): 1.68 (1.19,2.38), p = 0.004], revascularization [HR (95% CI): 1.50 (1.16,1.94), p = 0.002], cardiac rehospitalization [HR (95% CI): 1.25 (1.05,1.49), p = 0.012], and composite MACEs [HR (95% CI): 1.19 (1.01,1.41), p = 0.046] in patients with AMI. The independent predictive effect of TyG index on composite MACEs was mainly reflected in the subgroups of male gender and smoker. The area under the curve (AUC) of the TyG index predicting the occurrence of MACEs in AMI patients was 0.602 [95% CI 0.580,0.623; p < 0.001]. Conclusion: High TyG index levels appeared to be associated with an increased risk of MACEs in patients with AMI. The TyG index might be a valid predictor of cardiovascular outcomes of patients with AMI. Trial registration: Retrospectively registered.

Abstract:Background Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an inherited metabolic disorder with a high level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and the worse prognosis. The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, an emerging tool to reflect insulin resistance (IR), is positively associated with a higher risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in healthy individuals, but the value of TyG index has never been evaluated in FH patients. This study aimed to determine the association between the TyG index and glucose metabolic indicators, insulin resistance (IR) status, the risk of ASCVD and mortality among FH patients. Methods Data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999–2018 were utilized. 941 FH individuals with TyG index information were included and categorized into three groups: < 8.5, 8.5–9.0, and > 9.0. Spearman correlation analysis was used to test the association of TyG index and various established glucose metabolism-related indicators. Logistic and Cox regression analysis were used to assess the association of TyG index with ASCVD and mortality. The possible nonlinear relationships between TyG index and the all-cause or cardiovascular death were further evaluated on a continuous scale with restricted cubic spline (RCS) curves. Results TyG index was positively associated with fasting glucose, HbA1c, fasting insulin and the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index (all p < 0.001). The risk of ASCVD increased by 74% with every 1 unit increase of TyG index (95%CI: 1.15–2.63, p = 0.01). During the median 114-month follow-up, 151 all-cause death and 57 cardiovascular death were recorded. Strong U/J-shaped relations were observed according to the RCS results ( p = 0.0083 and 0.0046 for all-cause and cardiovascular death). A higher TyG index was independently associated with both all-cause death and cardiovascular death. Results remained similar among FH patients with IR (HOMA-IR ≥ 2.69). Moreover, addition of TyG index showed helpful discrimination of both survival from all-cause death and cardiovascular death ( p < 0.05). Conclusion TyG index was applicable to reflect glucose metabolism status in FH adults, and a high TyG index was an independent risk factor of both ASCVD and mortality.
Association between the triglyceride–glucose index and mortality in critically ill patients: A meta-analysis

Abstract:Background: To further identify the association of the triglyceride–glucose (TyG) index with the risk of mortality among critically ill patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Methods: The PubMed, Web of Science, and EMBASE databases were searched for relevant studies up to February 2, 2024. The primary outcomes were in-hospital mortality and ICU mortality. The secondary outcomes were 30-day mortality, 90-day mortality, and 1-year mortality. The hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were combined to evaluate the associations between the TyG index and the above endpoints. All the statistical analyses were performed with STATA 15.0 software. Results: Ten studies involving 22,694 patients were included. The pooled results demonstrated that an elevated TyG index indicated an increased risk of in-hospital mortality (HR = 1.76, 95% CI: 1.41–2.18, P < .001), ICU mortality (HR = 1.52, 95% CI: 1.33–1.74, P < .001), 30-day mortality (HR = 1.50, 95% CI: 1.02–2.19, P = .037), 90-day mortality (HR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.01–2.00, P = .043), and 1-year mortality (HR = 1.19, 95% CI: 1.11–1.28, P < .001). Subgroup analysis for in-hospital mortality and ICU mortality based on sex, age, body mass index and hypertension showed similar results. However, subgroup analysis stratified by diabetes mellitus (DM) revealed that the associations of the TyG index with in-hospital mortality (HR = 2.21, 95% CI: 1.30–3.78, P = .004) and ICU mortality (HR = 1.93, 95% CI: 0.95–3.94, P = .070) were observed only among patients without DM. Conclusion: The TyG index was significantly associated with mortality among critically ill patients without DM, and an elevated TyG index predicted an increased risk of mortality.

Abstract:A rare nondeletional α-thalassemia-2 (α-thal-2) allele was identified in a Thai boy with Hb H (β4) disease. The proband has α-thal-1 (– –SEA type) together with a non productive Hb Queens Park (HBA1:c.98T>A) [α32(B13)Met→Lys] α1-globin variant. No abnormal hemoglobin (Hb) fraction was detected by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The clinical effect of this mutation in the proband was comparable to that of deletional α-thal-2 present in Hb H disease.

Abstract:Background: In previous studies, the TyG index (triglyceride-glucose index) has been proven to be closely associated with the prognosis of cardiovascular disease. However, the impact of TyG index on the prognosis of patients with ischemic HF (heart failure) undergoing PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention) is still unclear. Method: In this study, 2055 patients with ischemic HF were retrospectively enrolled and classified into four groups based on quartiles of the TyG index. The primary endpoint was MACE (major adverse cardiovascular events) consisting of all-cause mortality, non-fatal MI (myocardial infarction), and any revascularization. The incidence of the endpoints among the four groups was assessed through Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. The independent correlation between TyG index and endpoints was analyzed with multivariate Cox regression models. Besides, the RCS (restricted cubic spline) analysis was performed to examine the nonlinear relationship between TyG index and MACE. Result: The incidence of MACE was significantly higher in participants with a higher TyG index. The positive association between the TyG index and MACE was also confirmed in the Kaplan–Meier survival analyses. Multivariate cox proportional hazards analysis indicated that the TyG index was independently associated with the increased risk of MACE, regardless of whether TyG was a continuous [TyG, per 1−unit increase, HR (hazard ratio) 1.41, 95% CI (confidence interval) 1.22-1.62, P < 0.001] or categorical variable [quartile of TyG, the HR (95% CI) values for quartile 4 was 1.92 (1.48-2.49), with quartile 1 as a reference]. In addition, the nonlinear association of TyG index with MACE was shown through RCS model and the risk of MACE increased as the TyG index increased in general (Nonlinear p=0.0215). Besides, no obvious interaction was found in the association of TyG with MACE between the DM (diabetes mellitus) group and the no-DM group. Conclusion: Among patients with ischemic HF undergoing PCI, the TyG index was correlated with MACE independently and positively.

Abstract:Background: The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and estimated glucose disposal rate (eGDR), which are calculated using different parameters, are widely used as markers of insulin resistance and are associated with cardiovascular diseases and prognosis. However, whether they have an additive effect on the risk of mortality remains unclear. This study aimed to explore whether the combined assessment of the TyG index and eGDR improved the prediction of long-term mortality in individuals with and without diabetes. Methods: In this cross-sectional and cohort study, data were derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001-2018, and death record information was obtained from the National Death Index. The associations of the TyG index and eGDR with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality were determined by multivariate Cox regression analysis and restricted cubic splines. Results: Among the 17,787 individuals included in the analysis, there were 1946 (10.9%) all-cause deaths and 649 (3.6%) cardiovascular deaths during a median follow-up of 8.92 years. In individuals with diabetes, the restricted cubic spline curves for the associations of the TyG index and eGDR with mortality followed a J-shape and an L-shape, respectively. The risk of mortality significantly increased after the TyG index was > 9.04 (all-cause mortality) or > 9.30 (cardiovascular mortality), and after eGDR was < 4 mg/kg/min (both all-cause and cardiovascular mortality). In individuals without diabetes, the association between eGDR and mortality followed a negative linear relationship. However, there was no association between the TyG index and mortality. Compared with individuals in the low TyG and high eGDR group, those in the high TyG and low eGDR group (TyG > 9.04 and eGDR < 4) showed the highest risk for all-cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.592, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.284-1.975) and cardiovascular mortality (HR = 1.683, 95% CI 1.179-2.400) in the overall population. Similar results were observed in individuals with and without diabetes. Conclusions: There was a potential additive effect of the TyG index and eGDR on the risk of long-term mortality in individuals with and without diabetes, which provided additional information for prognostic prediction and contributed to improving risk stratification.
