Abstract:OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the peripapillary and parafoveal perfusion of young, healthy myopic subjects with spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) angiography.DESIGN: A prospective comparative study was conducted from December 2014 to January 2015.SETTING: Participants recruited from a population-based study performed by the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai.PARTICIPANTS: A total of 78 Chinese normal subjects (78 eyes) with different refraction were included. Myopia was divided into 4 groups on the basis of the refractive status: 20 eyes with emmetropia (mean spherical equivalent (MSE) 0.50D to -0.50D), 20 eyes with mild myopia (MSE -0.75D to -2.75D), 20 eyes with moderate myopia (MSE -3.00D to -5.75D), and 18 eyes with high myopia (MSE≤-6.00D).MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Peripapillary and parafoveal retinal and choroidal perfusion parameters and their relationships with axial length (AL) and retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness were analysed.RESULTS: Significant differences were found for the retinal flow index and vessel density in the peripapillary area among the 4 groups, but not in the parafoveal area. The high myopia group had the lowest peripapillary retinal flow index and vessel density. In addition, there was a negative correlation (β=-0.002, p=0.047) between the AL and peripapillary retinal flow index and a positive correlation between RNFL thickness and the peripapillary retinal perfusion parameters (flow index: β=0.001, p=0.006; vessel density: β=0.350, p=0.002) even after adjustment for other variables.CONCLUSIONS: Highly myopic eyes have a decreased peripapillary retinal perfusion compared with emmetropic eyes. Such vascular features might increase the susceptibility to vascular-related eye diseases.

Abstract:Aim To study the characteristics and relationship between peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and choroidal thickness in young people with myopia. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 92 cases (52 myopia, 40 emmetropia) regarding age, sex, refractive power, axial length (AL), and intraocular pressure. Peripapillary RNFL and choroidal thicknesses were measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT) in six sectors. Differences in thicknesses between the two groups were compared by single-factor analysis. Results RNFL was thickest in the inferotemporal sector (157.3 ± 19.66 μm) and thinnest in the nasal sector (58.78 ± 18.41 μm). Peripapillary choroid was thickest in the superonasal sector (176.37 ± 33.92 μm) and thinnest in the inferotemporal sector (131.79 ± 25.22 μm). The RNFL was thinner in the myopia group (99.04 ± 8.23 μm) vs the emmetropia group (103.25 ± 8.32 μm); significantly different in the superotemporal and inferonasal sectors. Peripapillary choroid thickness in the myopia group (148.65 ± 26.64 μm) was lower vs the emmetropia group (160.88 ± 29.06 μm); significantly different in the nasal, inferonasal, and inferotemporal sectors. RNFL thickness was negatively correlated with choroidal thickness in the nasal sector (r = −0.288). Conclusion Peripapillary RNFL and choroidal thicknesses showed regional distributions. RNFL was negatively correlated with PCT in the nasal sector, possibly related to eye axis growth and choroidal compensation.

Abstract:Purpose The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between diopter (D) and choroidal thickness in myopic children by describing the values of choroidal thickness, and explore choroidal thickness as an important indicator for evaluating the progression of myopia. Methods The study included myopic and emmetropic children aged 6–14 years (156 eyes) from the Second Hospital of Dalian Medical University. The participants were divided into four groups according to the spherical equivalent refraction (SER): low myopes, moderate myopes, high myopes, and emmetropes. Choroidal thickness was measured in nine areas using the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) grid layout, which divided the areas into concentric circles of 0 × 0 mm, 3 × 3 mm, and 5 × 5 mm from the Sub Fovea. The images were obtained manually with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography scanner. Results There were significant differences of choroidal thickness in the nine areas of the ETDRS grid for all myopes. The distribution of choroidal thickness in low and moderate myopes were different from that in high myopes. In the horizontal direction, choroidal thickness decreased from the temporal to nasal areas for all myopes. In the vertical direction, the choroidal thickness in the perifovea was smaller than that in the parafovea (SER ≥ −2.75D), and the choroidal thickness in the perifovea was greater than that in the parafovea (SER < −2.75D). When comparing emmetropes with myopes, the closer the choroidal thickness was to the central fovea, the more significant the differences were, while the differences were smaller to the perifovea. Among all children, choroidal thickness was positive to SER and negative to axial length (AL) in all areas. For every 1D increase in myopia, the subfoveal choroidal thickness decreased by 13 μm, and for every 1 mm increase in AL, the subfoveal choroidal thickness decreased by 23 μm. Furthermore, SER and AL showed the strongest correlation with choroidal thickness in the inferior area. Conclusion Optical coherence tomography results revealed choroidal thickness was thinner in myopic children. Choroidal thickness was positive to SER and negative to AL. Therefore, we consider choroidal thickness to be an important indicator for evaluating the myopia progress.

Compartmental analysis of three-dimensional choroidal vascularity and thickness of myopic eyes in young adults using SS-OCTA

Abstract:Purpose: We aimed to investigate the change of three-dimensional (3D) choroidal thickness (ChT), choroidal vessel volume (CVV), and choroidal vessel index (CVI) in young myopic adults using swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA) and compare the difference of these indicators in different quadrants of the macula and optic disc. Methods: A total of 248 eye samples from 135 participants were used in this cross-sectional study. Each participant underwent detailed history taking and ocular examinations. Based on axial length (AL), patients were divided into the emmetropia (EM) group, mild-myopia (MIM) group, moderate-myopia (MOM) group, and high-myopia (HM) group. 6 mm × 6 mm (1,024 × 1024 B-scans) SS-OCTA scans were performed centered on the fovea and optic disc. 3D ChT, CVV, and CVI were measured based on a built-in deep learning algorithm. Differences in ChT, CVV, and CVI were analyzed in different regions and different myopic groups. Results: Significant reduction in the global CVV were found in the HM group (1.930 ± 0.865) in comparison with the EM (3.486 ± 0.992), MIM (3.238 ± 1.033), and MOM (2.589 ± 1.083) groups ( p < 0.001). The global CVI was also lower in the HM group (0.258 ± 0.061) than in the EM (0.320 ± 0.055), MIM (0.320 ± 0.051), and MOM (0.286 ± 0.066) groups ( p < 0.001). The ChT was thinner in eyes with HM (242.753 ± 65.641) than in eyes with EM (377.532 ± 80.593), MIM (348.367 ± 78.191), or MOM (300.197 ± 87.175) ( p < 0.001). Compartmental analysis revealed that ChT, CVV, and CVI in the nasal quadrant of the macula and temporal and inferior quadrants of the optic disc were much lower than those in other quadrants ( p < 0.05). Correlation analyses found that ChT, CVV, and CVI were negatively correlated with AL and spherical equivalence. Conclusion: 3D ChT, CVV, and CVI gradually decreased as the degree of myopia increased. The changes were more dramatic on the nasal side of the macula and the temporal and inferior sides of the optic disc. These findings demonstrated the 3D choroidal change and highlighted the papillo-macular bundle as a sensitive region in myopic development.

Abstract:This study evaluated cone density (CD) in the macular region and assess macular perfusion in children with varying degrees of myopia. This was a prospective, cross-sectional, observational study. Children underwent confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (cSLO), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and OCT angiography (OCTA) imaging. A built-in software was used to measure mean CD (cells/mm 2 ), retinal vessel density, choriocapillaris perfusion area, and choroidal thickness (CT). The study included 140 eyes from children categorized into four groups: emmetropia (31 eyes), low myopia (44 eyes), moderate myopia (31 eyes), and high myopia (34 eyes). The high myopia group exhibited significantly lower macular CD than the emmetropia group ( P < 0.05). Additionally, the high myopia group showed thinner CT and higher choriocapillaris perfusion area in the macular region than the emmetropia group (all P < 0.01). Macular CD was significantly correlated with age, spherical equivalent, axial length, and CT (all P < 0.05). Generalized linear models revealed CT as the independent factor associated with macular CD (Wald χ2 = 9.265, P = 0.002). Children with high myopia demonstrate reduced CD in the macular region, accompanied by reduced CT. These findings may have important implications for future myopia prevention and management strategies.

Abstract:Purpose: To determine the macular and peripapillary area choroid microstructure parameters of hyperopic anisometropic amblyopia eyes and compare to fellow and age-matched control eyes. To assess the correlation between the axial length (AL), choroidal thickness (CT) and choroid microstructure parameters. Methods: This cross-sectional comparative, non-interventional study involved 52 hyperopic anisometropic amblyopia children and 48 age-matched heathy controls. 52 eyes with hyperopic anisometropic amblyopia and 48 age-matched control eyes were studied. The peripapillary and subfoveal CT were determined. The total choroidal area (TCA), luminal area (LA), and stromal area (SA) of the subfoveal and peripapillary choroid were measured. In addition, the correlation between the AL, CT and choroid microstructure parameters were calculated. Results: The peripapillary and subfoveal CT of the amblyopic eyes was significantly thicker than the fellow and control eyes (all P < 0.05). The subfoveal and peripapillary choroidal SA, LA and TCA of the amblyopic eyes were significantly increased than that of the fellow and control eyes (all P < 0.05). The choroidal vascularity index (CVI) values of the amblyopic eye were significantly different among the three groups ( P < 0.05). There was a statistically significant negative correlation between AL and subfoveal CT (SFCT), LA and TCA levels ( P < 0.001, P = 0.039, P = 0.027, respectively). Spherical equivalent (SE) was positive correlated with SFCT, LA and TCA levels ( P = 0.456, 0.229 and 0.240, respectively; all P < 0.05). There was a statistically significant positive correlation between SFCT, SE, LA, SA, TCA and CVI levels (all P < 0.05). Conclusion: The subfoveal and peripapillary CT of amblyopic children abnormally increased and correlated with shorter AL and higher SE. The choroidal structure of the amblyopic eyes was different from the fellow and control eyes, the hyperopic anisometropic amblyopic eyes had significantly thicker sub-foveal choroid, higher LA, SA, and TCA. AL and CT affect choroidal structure and vascular density. Choroidal blood flow may be increased in amblyopic eyes. The larger LA, SA, TCA, and lower CVI were characteristic of the amblyopic eye.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction: To evaluate the retinal microvasculature of the optic nerve head and macula in high myopia (HM), investigate the association between the vascular parameters and peripapillary atrophy deformation, and assess and identify the peripapillary atrophy morphology changes during the development of HM. Methods: 167 right eyes from 167 HM patients were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Using the optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and fundus camera, we evaluated the following parameters: radian and type of peripapillary atrophy (PPA), intrapapillary vascular density (IVD), peripapillary vascular density (PVD), macular vascular density (MVD), and foveal avascular zone (FAZ). Based on the PPA radian, subjects were divided into four groups: the non-PPA, temporal PPA, advanced PPA, and annular PPA. At the same time, the above parameters were compared between the groups using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and least significant difference(LSD) test. Results: Total enrolled patients were divided into the non-PPA group (22 eyes), temporal-PPA group (70 eyes), advanced-PPA group (60 eyes), and annular-PPA group (15 eyes). The results showed that the PVD in the annular-PPA group was smaller than that in the non-PPA group, especially in the superonasal (SN), nasosuperior (NS), nasoinferior (NI), inferotemporal (IT), temporoinferior (TI), and superotemporal (ST) directions (F=4.059, 5.014, 2.830, 4.798, 5.892, 3.439; P<0.05). Notably, the PVD showcased the highest value in temporal, followed by that in superior and inferior, and the lowest in nasal. Concerning the fovea deep macular vascular density (fovea-DMVD), FAZ area, and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) in the annular-PPA group, they were less than those of the rest of the groups (P<0.05). Conclusion: The retinal microvasculature differed significantly in HM according to the PPA morphology. In addition to PVD and SFCT, the PPA can also affect FAZ. Characteristics of myopic maculopathy in Chinese children and adolescents with high myopia

Abstract:Aims To investigate the characteristics of myopic maculopathy among highly myopic Chinese children and adolescents and explore its associated risk factors. Methods Children and adolescents aged 7–17 years with spherical equivalent (SE) ≤ −6.00 dioptres (D) were recruited. Myopic maculopathy was categorised based on the International Meta-Analysis of Pathological Myopia Classification. The extent of diffuse choroidal atrophy (DCA) was classified using Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study grid (ETDRS). The area of DCA was categorised into three classes relative to optic disk area (DA): A1 (≤1 DA), A2 (1 to ≤5 DA) and A3 (5 to ≤10 DA). Logistic regression was used to identify risk factors associated with myopic maculopathy. Results Of the 425 participants aged 13.66±2.67 years, the proportions of tessellated fundus and DCA were 11.76% and 12.24%, and no more severe fundus lesions or ‘plus’ lesions. The proportion of DCA was 27.03% in children under 11, significantly higher than the 9.12% observed in those aged 11 and older (p<0.001). The percentages of DCA involving the outer, middle and central circles of the ETDRS grid were 42.31%, 55.77% and 1.92%. Myopic maculopathy was significantly associated with younger age (p<0.001), longer axial length (AL; p<0.001) and larger β-zone peripapillary atrophy (β-PPA; p=0.012). Conclusion In highly myopic children and adolescents, myopic maculopathy predominantly manifested as DCA (12.24%), with no cases of worse myopic maculopathy or ‘plus’ lesions. Younger age, longer AL and larger β-PPA were risk factors for myopic maculopathy.

Abstract:Purpose The aim of this study was to investigate changes in the retinal and choroidal thickness between high myopic amblyopia (HMA), low myopia (LM), moderate myopia (MM), high myopia (HM), and normal group (NG) using a spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Materials and Methods A total of 75 Chinese children (128 eyes; mean age 10.5 years) were recruited. Retinal thickness (RT) and choroidal thickness (CT) were measured at different locations including subfoveal (SF), and at 0.5 mm/1.0 mm/1.5 mm/2.0 mm/2.5 mm/3.0 mm to the fovea in superior, nasal, inferior, and temporal sectors using enhanced depth imaging (EDI) system of SD-OCT. Axial length (AL), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and refraction errors were also collected. Results No significant differences were found in subfoveal retinal thickness (SFRT). Moreover, a significantly thinner subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) was found in HMA compared to NG, LM, and MM, but not compared to HM. RT at 0.5 mm to fovea, HMA was significantly thinner compared to LM and MM in the three sectors (superior, inferior, and temporal). Nevertheless, no significant differences were found compared to NG and HM. CT at 0.5 mm to fovea, HMA was the significantly thinnest in all four sectors compared to NG, LM, and MM. RT at 1.0 mm/1.5 mm/2.0 mm/2.5 mm/3.0 mm to fovea, HMA was thinner compared to NG, LM, and MM. CT at 1.0 mm/1.5 mm/2.0 mm/2.5 mm/3.0 mm to fovea, HMA was thinner compared to NG, LM, and MM. At the superior and inferior sectors, HMA showed to be statistically thinner compared with HM. Moreover, SFCT in the HMA, HM, and NG were negatively correlated with AL. Conclusions Thinner retina and choroidal tissue appear to be related to HMA, and thus can be used as useful parameters for discovering the underlying mechanisms of the disease.

Abstract:BackgroundTo determine the influences of myopia and optic disc size on ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness profiles obtained by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT).MethodsOne hundred and sixty-eight eyes of 168 young myopic subjects were recruited and assigned to one of three groups according to their spherical equivalent (SE) values and optic disc area. All underwent Cirrus HD-OCT imaging. The influences of myopia and optic disc size on the GCIPL and RNFL thickness profiles were evaluated by multiple comparisons and linear regression analysis. Three-dimensional surface plots of GCIPL and RNFL thickness corresponding to different combinations of myopia and optic disc size were constructed.ResultsEach of the quadrant RNFL thicknesses and their overall average were significantly thinner in high myopia compared to low myopia, except for the temporal quadrant (all Ps ≤0.003). The average and all-sectors GCIPL were significantly thinner in high myopia than in moderate- and/or low-myopia (all Ps ≤0.002). The average OCT RNFL thickness was correlated significantly with SE (0.81 μm/diopter, P < 0.001), axial length (-1.44 μm/mm, P < 0.001), and optic disc area (5.35 μm/mm2, P < 0.001) by linear regression analysis. As for the OCT GCIPL parameters, average GCIPL thickness showed a significant correlation with SE (0.84 μm/diopter, P < 0.001) and axial length (-1.65 μm/mm, P < 0.001). There was no significant correlation of average GCIPL thickness with optic disc area. Three-dimensional curves showed that larger optic discs were associated with increased average RNFL thickness and that more-myopic eyes were associated with decreased average GCIPL and RNFL thickness.ConclusionMyopia can significantly affect GCIPL and RNFL thickness profiles, and optic disc size has a significant influence on RNFL thickness. The current OCT maps employed in the evaluation of glaucoma should be analyzed in consideration of refractive status and optic disc size.

Analysis of factors related to the development of ocular biometric parameters in Chinese children aged 6-10 years: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:Objectives Emmetropia depends on the precise coordination of ocular biometry, including axial length (AL), corneal curvature, lens thickness and anterior chamber depth (ACD). Disruption of this coordination leads to refractive errors such as myopia. This article aimed to determine the factors affecting ocular biometry and myopia development in young children. Design A cross-sectional study. Setting This study was conducted in a primary school in the Yanqing district of Beijing, China. Participants 792 students in grades 1–3 without hyperopia (>+2.00 D), strabismus, or amblyopia were selected. Exclusions: students had conditions affecting best corrected visual acuity and whose guardians refused to provide informed consent. Ocular biometric measurements and non-cycloplegia autorefraction were performed. The questionnaire addressed factors such as perinatal factors and environmental factors. Interventions None. Primary and secondary outcomes Ocular biometry and myopia. Results According to the multivariate logistic regression analysis, electronic screen use >2 hours/day (OR=2.175, p=0.013), paternal myopia (OR=1.761, p=0.002), maternal myopia (OR=1.718, p=0.005), taller height (OR=1.071, p<0.001), maternal education (OR=0.631, p=0.012) and maternal gestational hypertension (OR=0.330, p=0.042) were associated with myopia. AL was affected by female sex (OR=0.295, p<0.001), older age (OR=1.272, p=0.002) and taller height (OR=1.045, p<0.001). Female sex (OR=0.509, p<0.001), taller height (OR=1.046, p 2 hours each day (OR=3.596, p 2 hours each day (OR=0.431, p=0.001) influenced ACD incidence. Central corneal thickness (CCT) was associated with older age (OR=1.113, p=0.008), paternal education (OR=1.474, p=0.007), premature birth (OR=0.494, p=0.031), history of blue light therapy in infancy (OR=0.636, p=0.041) and history of incubator therapy in infancy (OR=0.263, p=0.009). Only sex influenced corneal curvature. Conclusions The factors associated with myopia were partly related to ACD and AL, and perinatal factors were associated with myopia and CCT. Abstract:Background: To report the thickness of the peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (pRNFL) in Chinese children and examine its association with refractive error, axial length (AL) and optic disc parameters. Design: Population-based cross-sectional study. Participants: A total of 2893 seven-year-old children from 11 randomly selected primary schools in Anyang, central China. Methods: Participants underwent ophthalmic examinations including optical biometry, cycloplegic autorefraction and spectral-domain ocular coherence tomography. Main Outcome Measures: Retinal nerve fibre layer thickness in 16 radial sections, cycloplegic spherical equivalent, AL. Results: The mean (SD) average RNFL thickness was 102.01(8.02) mu m. The average RNFL thickness decreased with smaller disc area (r = 0.18, R-2 = 0.03, P < 0.0001), bigger cup area (r = -0.11, R-2 = 0.01, P < 0.0001), smaller rim area (r = 0.28, R-2 = 0.08, P < 0.0001), smaller nerve head volume (r = 0.27, R-2 = 0.07, P < 0.0001), longer AL (r = -0.15, R-2 = 0.02, P < 0.0001) and a negative spherical equivalent (r = 0.11, R-2 = 0.01, P < 0.0001). Hyperopic children had a thicker RNFL than emmetropic children [102.45(8.13) mu m vs. 100.81 (7.18) mu m, P < 0.001]. Myopic children had thinner RNFL than emmetropic children [99.17 (7.69) mu m vs. 100.81 (7.18) mu m, P < 0.05]. Conclusion: Retinal nerve fibre layer thickness decreased with increasing AL, higher myopia, bigger cup area, smaller disc and rimarea, and a smaller nerve head volume, but the coefficient of determination for all these associations was small. The RNFL in myopes was significantly thinner than emmetropes or hyperopes, but with small absolute differences. The study provides RNFL values for healthy 7-year-old Chinese children. Follow up of this cohort to observe the change of RNFL thickness with myopia and possible change in detected associationswith age is planned.

Abstract:Purpose: This study aims to investigate the impact of axial elongation on ganglion cell complex thickness (GCCT) and retinal capillary density (CD) using wide-field swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional analysis was conducted involving 506 eyes. Fovea-centered scans were obtained to assess the subregional GCCT and capillary density across the whole retina, the superficial capillary plexus (SCP), and deep capillary plexus (DCP) among three groups: normal control, high myopia (HM) eyes with axial length < 28 mm, and HM eyes with axial length > 28 mm. Regional variations (central vs. peripheral, quadrants difference [superior, inferior, nasal, and temporal]) were analyzed. Results: In HM eyes with axial length > 28 mm, GCCT and retinal CD exhibit a general decline in most regions (P < 0.05). In HM eyes with axial length < 28 mm, significant reductions were observed specifically in peripheral regions, as in the GCCT beyond the 3 × 3 mm2 area and CD in the 9-12 mm whole retina, 9-12 mm superior SCP, and 6-12 mm DCP (P < 0.05). Maximum GCCT and retinal CD reduction with axial elongation was observed in subregions beyond 6 × 6 mm2. Conclusions: GCCT beyond the 3 × 3 mm2 area and peripheral retinal CD beyond the 6 × 6 mm2 area were more susceptible to axial elongation and are thereby deserving of particular attention. Translational relevance: It is necessary to evaluate different regions during the clinical assessment of the effect of myopia on the fundus and pay close attention to the peripheral retina.
Eight Years and Beyond Longitudinal Changes of Peripapillary Structures on OCT in Adult Myopia

Abstract:Purpose To investigate the long-term changes of peripapillary structures detected by enhanced depth imaging of OCT in adult myopia. Design Observational case series. Methods Myopic participants who had undergone a full baseline ophthalmologic examination and followed up with a minimum of 8 years were included. Using enhanced depth imaging of OCT, scans around the optic disc in the follow-up mode which enabled capturing of the same positions were performed in 65 eyes. The peripapillary parameters including the size of border tissue, Bruch's membrane opening (BMO), peripapillary choroidal thickness, and the angle between peripapillary Bruch's membrane and anterior sclera were manually delineated and measured. Results The axial length showed a significant elongation after a mean follow up time of 9.46±0.92 years. The rates of changes were 0.015±0.011 mm/y in the medium myopia group, and 0.057±0.039 mm/y in the high myopia group. At the last visit, the average border tissue length and BMO diameter were increased. The angle between peripapillary BM did not show significant change, while the angle between peripapillary sclera showed significant rise. In multivariate analysis, the border tissue elongation, BMO enlargement, and increased sclera angle were all associated with the change of axial length. The development of BM defect and inward protrusion of sclera on temporal peripapillary region was observed on 8 (34.8%) eyes in the high myopia group, along with an extreme thinning or disappearing of peripapillary choroid. Conclusion A marked longitudinal changes of peripapillary structures including border tissue, BM, choroid and sclera could be observed in adult myopic eyes, which may impact the biomechanical environment around optic nerve head.

Abstract:Purpose:To determine the relationship between choroidal thickness (ChT) at the posterior pole and refractive error and to explore the difference between the macular and peripapillary regions in children with myopia.Methods:A total of 340 healthy Chinese children underwent a series of comprehensive ocular examinations including cycloplegic refraction. Swept-source optical coherence tomography was used to measure the ChT in the macular and peripapillary regions. The Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study grid was applied to define the sectors.Results:The mean spherical equivalent (SE) of the participants was -1.71 ± 2.22 diopter (D; range from -7.63 to 4.25 D). The mean ChT in the central foveal, parafoveal, and perifoveal regions were 229 ± 65 μm, 227 ± 60 μm, and 215 ± 50 μm, respectively, and the mean global peripapillary choroidal thickness (PPCT) was 136 ± 33 μm. The choroid in the macular region and the global PPCT was thinner in myopes compared to hyperopes. The area between the central fovea and the optic disc underwent the largest change as myopia worsened. SE, uncorrected visual acuity, cornea curvature radius (CR), retinal thickness (RT), and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT, except for the central fovea) were the independent factors of ChT in the macular region. SE, CR, RT, and RNFLT were the independent factors of PPCT temporally, inferiorly, and globally, while only CR, RT, and RNFLT were independently associated with PPCT superiorly and nasally.Conclusions:Choroidal thinning might be uneven during the development of myopia. SE only influenced the macular area and sectors temporal and inferior to the optic disc.

Abstract:Myogenesis is a complex process of which the underlying mechanisms are conserved between species, including birds and mammals. Despite a good understanding of the stages of myogenesis, many of the mechanisms involved in the regulation of proliferation of the successive myoblast generations, the cellular transitions cell proliferation/alignment of myoblasts/fusion of myoblasts into myotubes/differentiation of myofibres and the control of total myofibre number still remain unknown. An in vivo proteomic analysis of the semitendinosus muscle from Charolais foetuses, at three specific stages of myogenesis (60, 110 and 180 days postconception), was conducted using 2‐DE and MS. Expression profiles of more than 170 proteins were revealed and analysed using two way hierarchical clustering and statistical analysis. Our studies identify, for the first time, distinct proteins of varied biological functions and protein clusters with myogenic processes, such as the control of cell cycle activity and apoptosis, the establishment of cellular metabolism and muscle contractile properties and muscle cell reorganisation. These results are of fundamental interest to the field of myogenesis in general, and more specifically to the control of muscle development in meat producing animals.

Abstract:AIM: To describe the characteristics of peripapillary hyperreflective ovoid mass-like structure (PHOMS) in myopic children and to investigate factors associated with PHOMS. METHODS: This retrospective observational study included 101 eyes of 101 children (age ≤17y) with myopia. All included patients underwent comprehensive clinical examination. Optic nerve canal parameters, including disc diameter, optic nerve head (ONH) tilt angle, and border tissue angle were measured using serial enhanced-depth imaging spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT). Based on the optic disc drusen consortium's definition of PHOMS, eyes were classified as PHOMS group and non-PHOMS group. PHOMS was categorized according to height. RESULTS: Sixty-seven (66.3%) eyes were found with PHOMS. Small PHOMS could only be detected by optical coherence tomography (OCT). Medium PHOMS could be seen with blurred optic disc borders corresponding to OCT. The most frequent location of PHOMS was at the nasosuperior (91%, 61 of 67 eyes) to ONH disc. The axial length and spherical equivalent were more myopic in the PHOMS group than in the non-PHOMS group (both P<0.001). ONH tilt angle was also significantly greater in PHOMS group than in non-PHOMS group [8.90 (7.16-10.54) vs 3.93 (3.09-5.25), P<0.001]. Border tissue angle was significantly smaller in PHOMS group than in non-PHOMS group [29.70 (20.90-43.81) vs 45.62 (35.18-60.45), P<0.001]. In the multivariable analysis, spherical equivalent (OR=3.246, 95%CI=1.209-8.718, P=0.019) and ONH tilt angle (OR=3.275, 95%CI=1.422-7.542, P=0.005) were significantly correlated with PHOMS. There was no disc diameter associated with PHOMS. In the linear regression analysis, border tissue angle was negatively associated with PHOMS height (β=-2.227, P<0.001). CONCLUSION: PHOMS is associated with optic disc tilt and optic disc nasal shift in myopia. Disc diameter is not a risk factor for PHOMS. The changes in ONH caused by axial elongation facilitated an understanding of the mechanism of PHOMS.

Abstract:This study aimed to explore the characteristics of retinal perfusion and its associations with high myopia.A total of 760 participants were included. Peripapillary radial peripapillary capillary perfusion, foveal avascular zone, and parafoveal perfusion were measured using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Tilted disc ratio and parapapillary atrophy were determined using swept-source optical coherence tomography.A total of 760 young healthy participants with myopic eyes were included in the analysis. The mean axial length and titled disc ratio were 26.43 ± 1.14 and 0.76 ± 0.08 mm in the high-myopia group and 24.79 ± 0.75 and 0.80 ± 0.09 mm in the control group, respectively. The high-myopia group exhibited significantly larger parapapillary atrophy, lower tilted disc ratio, lower radial peripapillary capillary vessel density, larger area of foveal avascular zone, and lower deep parafoveal vessel density.
