Abstract:Halogenated organic pollutants (HOPs), including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and chlorophenols (CPs), were identified in three marine fish species in Vietnam. Total PCBs, OCPs, and CPs concentrations ranged from 4.5 to 711.6 ng g-1 lipid weight (lw), 69.9-2360 ng g-1 lw, and 208.1-3941.2 ng g-1 lw, respectively. CPs were the most frequently detected pollutants in the marine environment of Vietnam of the three HOPs studied, followed by OCPs and PCBs. There are significant differences in HOPs between three types of seafood in Vietnam, including yellowstripe scad, Indian mackerel, and silver pomfret in this study. Notably, the types and amounts of HOPs found in the fish were differently influenced by the economic and industrial activities of the sampled areas. Despite these findings, the consumption of HOP-contaminated fish from the study areas was found not to pose any significant health risks to Vietnam's coastal population.
How we make good doctors into good teachers: A short course to support busy clinicians to improve their teaching skills

Abstract:Background: Doctors are expected to teach but many are reluctant through lack of training. Busy clinicians have little time to attend faculty development initiatives. We wanted to increase clinical teaching capacity locally. What we did: In response to requests from doctors lacking confidence in their teaching skills, we developed a programme tailored to the needs of working clinical teachers. The emphasis is on teaching effectively in a busy clinical environment. There are five 90 min modules: bedside teaching, effective supervision and feedback, teaching physical examination and procedures, effective lectures and facilitating development of clinical reasoning skills. The course is practical, interactive and takes place in a supportive learning environment adjacent to the workplace. A total of 81 clinicians participated in the course. Evaluation: The main outcomes were increased confidence in bedside teaching, teaching more effectively on ward rounds and reduction in need for support with teaching. Participants reported a better understanding of basic educational theory and its relevance to clinical teaching. There is increased activity in clinical teaching among past participants. Conclusions: All clinical teachers require guidance and encouragement in developing their teaching skills. An accessible, practical focused teaching course run locally by colleagues with education expertise can improve clinicians’ skills and motivation to teach.
Exposure To Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers Associated With Consumption Of Marine And Freshwater Fish In Hong Kong

Abstract:Concentrations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in market fish have not previously been reported in Hong Kong. Axial and ventral muscles from 10 each common species of freshwater and marine fish purchased from markets in Hong Kong were analyzed for 22 PBDEs. Among the 10 freshwater fish species, spotted snakehead (Channa maculate) contained the highest level of PBDEs in ventral muscle (130 ng g(-1) wet wt.). For marine fish, bigeye (Priacanthus macracanthus) showed significantly higher levels of PBDEs (60.7 ng g(-1) wet wt. in ventral tissue) than all other marine species. The levels of PBDEs in fish samples ranged from 0.53 to 130 ng g(-1) wet wt. The tetrabrominated congener BDE-47 and pentabrominated BDE-99 were the predominant congeners, which accounted for 27% and 30%, respectively, of the total PBDEs. Daily PBDE intake was calculated according to the different fish consumption rate for Hong Kong consumers, and the results ranged from 222 to H 98 ng day(-1) for marine fish and 403-2170 ng day(-1) for freshwater fish. The daily PBDE intake from fish reported here were higher than those reported from the United States (8.94-15.7 ng day(-1)) and Europe (14-23.1 ng day(-1)). (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:The present work studied the levels, distribution, potential sources, ecological and human health risks of typical hormones and phenolic endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the mariculture areas of the Pearl River Delta (PRD), China. The environmental levels of 11 hormones (6 estrogens, 4 progestogens, and 1 androgen) and 2 phenolic EDCs were quantified in various matrices including water, sediment, cultured fish and shellfish. Ultra -high performance liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry analyses showed that all the 13 target compounds were detected in biotic samples, whereas 10 were detected in water and sediment, respectively. The total concentrations ranged from 35.06-364.53 ng/L in water and 6.31-29.30 ng/g in sediment, respectively. The average contaminant levels in shellfish (Ostrea gigas, Mytilus edulis and Mimachlamys nobilis) were significantly higher than those in fish (Culter alburnus, Ephippus orbis and Ephippus orbis). Source apportion -ment revealed that the pollution of hormones and phenolic EDCs in PRD mariculture areas was resulted from the combination of coastal anthropogenic discharges and mariculture activities. The hazard quotient values of the contaminants were all less than 1, implying no immediate human health risk. Overall, the present study is of great significance for scientific mariculture management, land-based pollution control, ecosystem protection, and safeguarding human health. (c) 2021 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Fisheries and aquaculture production in the coastal zone of Vietnam contribute significantly to the national economy. However, seafood quality and safety, especially in terms of metal contents, are of increasing concern, for both domestic and international markets. This paper presents the results of an investigation in some trace metal elements (iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg)) concentrations in some fishes, crustaceans, and molluscs in the coastal zone of the Red River (in the Ba Lat estuary in Thai Binh and Nam Dinh provinces) during four sampling campaigns in 2020. All samples were treated by a green sample preparation using microwave digestion and then analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results showed that the trace metal element concentrations in fish, crustacean, and mollusc samples decreased in the following order: Fe > Zn > Mn > Cu > As > Cd ∼ Hg. In more details, the ranges of trace metal elements in seafood samples were 13.13–202.73; 7.63–82.71; 0.48–22.73; 0.72–15.58; 0.18–5.12; 0.001–1.114; and 0.001–0.923 mg·kg−1 for Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, As, Cd, and Hg, respectively. The research results contribute to the dataset of the seafood (both fishery and aquacultural seafood) quality in the Red River coastal zone. Although the mean values of different trace metal elements observed in this study were lower than the allowed values of Vietnam’s or European’s threshold for food safety, some high concentrations were detected. The survey results suggest the need to expand the monitoring scope (frequency of monitoring, number of samples, and observed variables) for obtaining a fully comprehensive assessment of seafood quality in this region. Our results also indicate that it is necessary to manage water quality in coastal areas, especially where aquaculture activities are carried out.

Abstract:In this work, a GC-MS/MS-based analytical method using accelerated solvent extraction combined with multi-layer silica gel column for sample preparation was developed to simultaneously determine 20 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), 28 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and 8 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in fish tissue. The method detection limits (MDLs) were achieved in the range of 0.053 ng/g (α-chlordane) – 1.65 ng/g (δ-BHC), 0.07 ng/g (PCB-209) – 1.84 ng/g (PCB-28), 0.323 ng/g (BDE-209) – 0.796 ng/g (BDE-47) for OCPs, PCBs and PBDEs, respectively. Intra-day and inter-day repeatability of the analytical signal (peak area) were below 10.5% and 12.4%, correspondingly. The overall recovery was investigated by spiking experiments and ranged from 70.9 to 114%. The confirmation of this developed method was assessed by analysis of the standard reference material (SRM-1947) sample. The measured concentrations of target compounds were within the range of the certified values. This developed method was applied for analysis of OCPs, PCBs and PBDEs in five fish tissues collected randomly from local markets at Hai Phong province. Their concentrations (<MDL – 206 ng/g for OCPs, <MDL – 20.7 ng/g for PCBs and <MDL – 66.7 ng/g for PBDEs) were lower than the maximum residue levels permitted by European Union, Food and Agriculture Organization and World Health Organization.

Abstract:The presence of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in aquatic environments such as water, sediment, and sludge received more and more attention. However, the bioaccumulate properties of EDCs, particularly progestins and androgens, in various tissues of different wild freshwater fish species, as well as their effects on human health, have not been fully studied. The muscle, liver, and gills of three wild fish species obtained from the East Dongting Lake in southern China were examined for the presence of 19 EDCs (4 progestins, 5 androgens, 6 estrogens, and 4 phenols). Seventeen analytes were detected in all fish samples, and the concentrations of progestins, androgens, estrogens, and phenols ranged from ND–78.80 ng/g (wet weight, ww), ND–50.40 ng/g ww, ND–3573.82 ng/g ww, and ND–88.17 ng/g ww, respectively. The bioaccumulation of some EDCs in wild fish from East Dongting Lake was species-specific. Additionally, AND, EES, P4, and E2 were discovered in the liver at higher levels than in the muscle, suggesting that livers had a larger ability for enriching these EDCs than the muscle. Furthermore, the relationships between the fish sizes and the EDC concentrations indicated that total weight and length had a negligible impact on the bioaccumulation of EDCs in various fish species. Most importantly, the effects of EDCs on human health as a result of fish consumption were assessed. Although the estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of most EDCs were much lower compared with the corresponding acceptable daily intakes (ADIs) via consuming fish collected in this study, the EDI of EE2 in Silurus asotus was higher than the ADI of E2, indicating that Silurus asotus from East Dongting Lake should be eaten in moderation by local residents.

Abstract:The presence and distribution of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the mariculture fish from Pulau Kukup, Johor of Malaysia have been studied along with the impact on human health. Six different species of mariculture fish were collected, due to their high consumption in the Asian region-especially Malaysia, to assess their levels of EDCs. The highest concentration of EDCs detected in the muscle was dexamethasone (2.37-15.84 ng/g) and (0.77-13.41 ng/g), in the liver was dexamethasone (<2.54-43.56 ng/g) and progesterone (2.23-9.78 ng/g), and in the reproductive organ are dexamethasone (<2.54-37.23 ng/g) and caffeine (0.21-18.92 ng/g). The human health risk assessment in the current study suggested that there is no potential risk to the consumer because the hazard index was below 1 (HI < 1). The present study provides information on the pollution profile of EDCs and the associated human health risk with EDCs in mariculture fish.

Abstract:Interleukin 1 alpha (IL-1 alpha) and interleukin 1 beta (IL-1 beta) proteins were studied by enzymoimmunoassay (EIA) and Immunoblot analysis in the 10,000 g supernatant of normal and psoriatic (lesional and nonlesional) human skin specimens. By EIA IL-1 alpha was the principal form detected in all the specimens, which contrasts with the predominance of IL-1 beta in human blood monocytes. In psoriatic plaques relatively less IL-1 alpha and more IL-1 beta were detected. On Immunoblot analysis the mature form (17 kD) was not detected in normal skin, which showed only 52-kD immunoreactive forms. In contrast the 17-kD form was found in psoriatic skin. This indicates either a distinct processing of IL-1 molecules or a contribution of inflammatory cells infiltration to the IL-1 pool in psoriatic plaques. During systemic retinoids therapy the amount of both IL-1 species decreased in lesional and nonlesional psoriatic skin.

Abstract:Residue concentrations of fifteen antibiotics including sulfonamides, quinolones, macrolides, β-lactams, and trimethoprim in lakes from Hanoi metropolitan area, Vietnam, were analyzed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC/MS-MS) to elucidate their occurrence and behavior in urban environment. For surface water, the average concentrations of five antibiotic classes decreased in the order: sulfonamides (117.9 ng/L) > β-lactams (31.28 ng/L) > quinolones (20.19 ng/L) > macrolides (17.74 ng/L) > trimethoprim (8.93 ng/L). While the highest concentration of SMX was detected at 806.5 ng/L in surface water, those obtained in sediment were only at 1.35 ng/g because of their high solubility in water. Quinolones were found at a maximal concentration of 158.7 ng/L for OFL in water phase whereas those in sediment phase were 4,017 ng/g due to their great affinity in sediment. These findings revealed the different fate and release mechanisms of each antibiotic group in the environment. The ecological risk assessment implied some targeted compounds, and in particular, OFL and AZM could pose high risks to algae in the aquatic ecosystem.

Abstract:Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) consist of a diverse group of industrial chemicals and pharmacological agents. The use of instrumental analyses as the first screening tool might not be cost-effective to identify the existence of enormous numbers of chemical contaminants in environments. Also, knowledge of the concentration of individual residues is difficult to use to evaluate biological impacts of contaminants to wildlife and humans. The primary objective of the present study was to develop and to test the feasibility of using a battery of exposure biomarkers for the rapid-screening of various endocrine disrupting activities present in food. The measurement of the EDC-elicited activities involved various (i) receptor-mediated responses, including androgenic, estrogenic, dioxin-like, glucocorticoid-like, progesterone-like, peroxisome proliferator-like and retinoid-like as well as (ii) the non-receptor mediated responses through modulation of cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and ATP content. Samples of both local and imported pork, beef and chicken as well as freshwater and seawater fishes were collected. Extracts of different foods exhibited various dioxin-like and `` hormonal'' activities. Fish and chicken skin were found to be the major source of exogenous `` hormonal'' and dioxin-like substances in diets. Extracts of beef and pork contained lesser potencies of hormonally-active agents. Our data suggest that the proposed EDC-screening platform may be useful in a risk assessment for the routine monitoring of EDCs in foods. Continuous monitoring and research is warranted to assess the physiological consequences of the consumption. Abstract:The aim of this study is to assess the biological accumulation of pesticide residues in aquatic organisms in Sai Gon - Dong Nai (SG-DN) estuary. Fish and mollusks were collected directly at the Soai Rap and Long Tau estuary of the SG-DN river system, washed and separated for taking the tissue. The organochlorine compounds from the tissue were then extracted and analyzed by gas chromatography system. The results showed that, the concentration of OCPs in Tegillarca granosa, Meretrix lyrata, Margaritifera auricularia and Bostrychus sinensis varied from 6.4 to 59.9 μg/kg, 7.2 to 322 μg/kg, 4.5 to 62.1 μg/kg and 2.9 to 114.3 μg/kg fresh weight, respectively. In general, molluscs species that accumulate more heptachlor, aldrin, endrin or dieldrin tend to accumulate less DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane). Endosulfan was the most commonly found in three bivalve mollusks while DDTs (1.5–75.2 μg/kg, averaging 8.7 μg/kg weight) was the most popular OCPs in the fish (Bostrychus sinensis) samples. In DDT group, the p,p’-DDT metabolite accounted for the largest percentage, reaching 50% of total DDTs. In HCH (Hexachlorocyclohexane) group, β-HCH isomer was predominant in almost samples. Nhìn chung, loài nhuyễn thể nào tích lũy nhiều heptachlor, aldrin, endrin hoăc dieldrin có xu hướng tích lũy ít DDT (Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane). Endosunfan là nhóm thuốc được tìm thấy nhiều nhất trong các loài nhuyễn thể nghiên cứu. Ngược lại, nhóm DDT lại phổ biến ở cá Bostrychus sinensis (1,5–75,2 μg/kg, trung bình 8,7 μg/kg trọng lượng). Dạng p.p’-DDT trong nhóm DDT chiếm tỷ lệ cao nhất, tới 50% DDT tổng. Trong khi đó, đồng dạng β-HCH của nhóm HCH (Hexachlorocyclohexane) chiếm đa số trong hầu hết các mẫu.
Cyanobacterial Blooms and Microcystins in Southern Vietnam

Abstract:Studies on cyanobacteria in Vietnam are limited and mainly restricted to large reservoirs. Cyanobacterial blooms in small water bodies may pose a health risk to local people. We sampled 17 water bodies in the vicinity of urban settlements throughout the Mekong basin and in southeast Vietnam. From these, 40 water samples were taken, 24 cyanobacterial strains were isolated and 129 fish, 68 snail, 7 shrimp, 4 clam, and 4 duck samples were analyzed for microcystins (MCs). MCs were detected up to 11,039 µg/L or to 4033 µg/g DW in water samples. MCs were detected in the viscera of the animals. MC-LR and MC-RR were most frequently detected, while MC-dmLR, MC-LW, and MC-LF were first recorded in Vietnam. Microcystis was the main potential toxin producer and the most common bloom-forming species. A potential health hazard was found in a duck⁻fish pond located in the catchment of DauTieng reservoir and in the DongNai river where raw water was collected for DongNai waterwork. The whole viscera of fish and snails must be completely removed during food processing. Cyanobacterial monitoring programs should be established to assess and minimize potential public health risks.
Endocrine Disruptors: an Overview and Discussion on Issues Surrounding Their Impact on Marine Animals.

Abstract:Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) are a growing concern because they are seriously harmful to wildlife both by direct damage to animals and through more subtle effects on growth, development and reproduction. In the past decades, there have been many studies about toxicological impact of EDCs on species. The NCBI Data-Base has amassed hundreds of research papers regarding the effects or mechanism of EDCs in marine animals. However, researchers still face new scientific challenges in some critical issues related to the understanding of EDCs and their effect on animals. Specifically, issues surrounding the selection of an appropriate model organism to document their effects, reconsidering biomarkers, and using “omics” technique to study the precise mechanism of EDCs warrant discussion. In addition, EDCs are now taken into account to partly explain the dwindling biodiversity of marine ecosystem. Yet, whether there exists a causal association between EDCs exposure and variety deterioration of species is still unknown. This review provides an in depth commentary on the issues mentioned above. Abstract:The article reports the concentration levels of particulate and dissolved metals and metalloids (Be, Se, Sb, Tl, V, Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, Ni, Mo, Co, Fe As, Ag) in the eastern region of the lower Mekong Delta (Vietnam) in order to assess their possible influence on the environmental quality of river water. To measure the concentrations of trace elements, a mass spectrometric method was used. The critical particulate elements had included V, Cu, Ni, Co, Pb, Cd and potentially critical - Mo, Ag, Se, Tl. In the dissolved phase these were Cu, Zn, and Pb, Cd, Co, Ag, Se respectively. The high accumulation ability of studied elements to suspended particulate matter (102-107) suggests their important role in the distribution of elements. The water salinization boundary in the riverbeds of the delta moves upstream 30-50 km further in the dry season compared to the wet season.

Abstract:In the past decade, many studies have investigated the occurrence, and associated biological effects, of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in China's aquatic environments. Here, we summarize the exposure levels of butyltins and other EDCs in major Chinese river watersheds and coastal waters and review their biological consequences. High concentrations of butyltins were found in seawater from the coasts of Dalian, Tianjin, Qingdao, Shanghai, and the Guangxi North Sea, and in sediments from Daya, Haimen, and Guangao Bays. In areas with high butyltin concentrations, there was an increased incidence of imposex (in which male sexual characteristics are found in female gastropods). We discuss the effects of EDCs on other wildlife, including night herons, Chinese sturgeon, and crucian carp, and propose a number of ways to limit the release of EDCs and reduce their effects.

Abstract:Exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in freshwater systems has garnered increasing attention. A comprehensive analysis of the migration patterns, bioaccumulation, and consumer health risk of EDCs along the Xiangjiang River due to fish consumption from the river ecosystem was provided. Twenty natural and synthetic target EDCs were detected and analyzed from the water, sediments, and fish samples collected along the Xiangjiang River. There were significant correlations between the EDC concentrations in fish and the sediments. This revealed that EDCs in sediments play a dominant role in the uptake of EDCs by fish. The bioaccumulation factor and biota-sediment accumulation factor were calculated, with the highest values observed for nonylphenol. Pearson's correlation analysis showed that bisphenol A is the most reliable biological indicator of EDC contamination in fish. Furthermore, based on the threshold of toxicological concerns and the health risk with dietary intake, crucian carp and catfish from the Xiangjiang River pose a certain risk for children and pregnant women compared to grass carp. The Monte Carlo simulation results indicated a certain risk of cumulative ∑EDC exposure for local residents due to fish consumption.

Abstract:This study investigated geospatial distributions of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the waters of the Dongjiang River and their associations with anthropogenic activities. Fifteen EDCs, with total concentrations in the river water of 149-2525 ng/L were detected, with bisphenol-A, 4-nonylphenol, 4-tert-octylphenol, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, and methylparaben being the five predominant EDCs. The total estrogen concentration was high downstream and significantly correlated with the spatial distribution of urban land use, wastewater discharge, population, and gross domestic product, indicating human activities have increased estrogen levels and threatened ecological health. The total risk quotient indicated a high ecological risk of estrogens to fish and a moderate to high ecological risk of personal care products to algae. Estrone, triclosan, bisphenol-A, 4-nonylphenol, and 4-tert-octylphenol were categorized as priority pollutants, which required special concern. Triclosan and triclocarban can serve as reliable chemical indicators for predicting EDC levels based on correlation analysis. The crucial factors affecting EDC levels were identified through the Mantel test and predictor importance was quantified using a multiple regression model, which can help predict occurrences and geospatial distributions of EDCs. Total phosphorus and electrical conductivity were the major predictors of EDC levels, providing promising indicators for monitoring EDCs in river water. Urban land proportion significantly affected phenolic environmental estrogens, natural estrogens, and disinfectants. In the main stream, urban population, urbanization rate, and gross domestic product influenced phenolic environmental estrogen levels. A mini-review of the global distribution of EDCs in river water revealed that income and population differences among countries affect their occurrence, suggesting socioeconomic factors should be considered to mitigate EDC pollution.

Abstract:In Asian developing countries, undeveloped and ineffective sewer systems are causing surface water pollution by a lot of contaminants, especially pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). Therefore, the risks for freshwater fauna need to be assessed. The present study aimed at: i) elucidating the contamination status; ii) evaluating the bioaccumulation; and iii) assessing the potential risks of PPCP residues in surface water and freshwater fish from three Asian countries. We measured 43 PPCPs in the plasma of several fish species as well as ambient water samples collected from India (Chennai and Bengaluru), Indonesia (Jakarta and Tangerang), and Vietnam (Hanoi and Hoa Binh). In addition, the validity of the existing fish blood-water partitioning model based solely on the lipophilicity of chemicals is assessed for ionizable and readily metabolizable PPCPs. When comparing bioaccumulation factors calculated from the PPCP concentrations measured in the fish and water (BAFmeasured) with bioconcentration factors predicted from their pH-dependent octanol-water partition coefficient (BCFpredicted), close values (within an order of magnitude) were observed for 58-91 % of the detected compounds. Nevertheless, up to 110 times higher plasma BAFmeasured than the BCFpredicted were found for the antihistamine chlorpheniramine in tilapia but not in other fish species. The plasma BAFmeasured values of the compound were significantly different in the three fish species (tilapia > carp > catfish), possibly due to species-specific differences in toxicokinetics (e.g., plasma protein binding and hepatic metabolism). Results of potential risk evaluation based on the PPCP concentrations measured in the fish plasma suggested that chlorpheniramine, triclosan, haloperidol, triclocarban, diclofenac, and diphenhydramine can pose potential adverse effects on wild fish. Results of potential risk evaluation based on the PPCP concentrations measured in the surface water indicated high ecological risks of carbamazepine, sulfamethoxazole, erythromycin, and triclosan on Asian freshwater ecosystems.
