Abstract:In recent years a significant body of research has been dedicated to the analysis and verification of workflows without taking into account the temporal dimension of activities involved. Once the temporal aspects of the activities in a process description are taken into account, various types of synchronization anomalies and other undesirable behavior may be detected. In this paper, we use a timed Petri nets to represent workflows and introduce a set of linear inference algorithms for the quantitative analysis of temporal constraints of workflows. We apply our models to the analysis of several workflow patterns.

Abstract:Recently, a significant body of research has been dedicated to the analysis and verification of workflows without taking into account the temporal dimension of activities involved. Workflow also has a strong temporal aspect: activity sequencing, deadlines, routing conditions, and scheduling all involve the element of time. Once the temporal aspects of the activities in a process description are taken into account, various types of synchronization anomalies and other undesirable behavior may be detected. In this article, we address both the quantitative temporal aspect and the qualitative temporal aspect of workflow systems. On one hand, based on time Petri net (TPN), we introduce a set of linear inference algorithms to solve some quantitative inference problems of temporal constraints of workflows. On the other hand, based on extended interval temporal logic (EITL), we propose temporal logic workflow models to qualitatively infer temporal relations among tasks of workflow systems. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:A method for modeling imprecise temporal aspects of discrete-event systems, extended interval temporal logic,is proposed, which is an extension of the traditional point-interval temporal logic. Time Petri nets are used to model this new logic, which give an straightforward view of the logic and provide a powerful tool for analyzing complicated temporal relations. Based on time Petri nets, we put forward several linear firing rules among transitions. Using these rules and their combination, we can simplify the Petri net representation of complicated temporal relations, thus get the quantitative relations between time intervals and solve temporal logic problem within linear time complexity. So it is an effective method.

Abstract:Petri nets are widely used in describing workflow models of management systems, and also functioning in process management and resource organizing.The number of workflow patterns are increasing along with the demands of business process modeling. The Petri net and its extensions can no longer meet the requirement of model description, due to the limitation of their semantics.The models of some patterns are very sophisticated and even grow exponentially in complexity. Also the performance of these new patterns are not well studied. This paper extends Petri nets to Stochastic workflow nets（SWNs）and introduces stochastic or state related variables into arc weights, transition enabling guard and execution time.With the new features, SWNs can describe models more accurately and flexibly. And performance of common patterns is calculated under the assumption of exponentially distributed time. The paper also illustrates how to simplify the model with equivalent patterns.

Abstract:In this paper, a distributed scheduling approach of a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) is presented. A new class of Petri nets called networked time Petri nets (NTPN) for system modeling of networking environment is proposed. The distributed intelligent scheduling is implemented by three schedulers which combine NTPN models with expert system techniques. The simulation results are shown.

Abstract:The development of workflow management system requires satisfactory models and concepts. As mentioned in [W.M.P. van der Aalst and Arthur H.M.ter Hofstede, YAWL: Yet Another Workflow Language, QUT Technical report, FIT-TR-2002-06, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, 2002], classical Petri nets are not suitable to describe some advanced workflow patterns, thus this paper presents a Petri-net-based model characterized by places with new properties which are suitable to represent some advance workflow patterns. Many workflow models confuse the behaviors of workflow engine and external environment(tasks), and fail to describe the real semantics of workflow engine. In our model, through separating transitions from routings, the place will describe the behaviors of engine and the transition will describe the behavior of task. Because workflow engine is a reactive system, the token-game semantic behavior of a Petri net-based workflow model will differ from its behavior at run time. However, the semantics of property-transition-net-based model with ST firing rules is suitable enough to capture the behavior of workflow process. In this paper the formal definitions and semantics of this model are discussed in detail. This paper concludes with an introduction of a verification technique for structure-soundness detection based on some new reduction rules.

Abstract:The ultimate goal of workflow management is to make sure that the proper activities are executed by the right person at the right time, a business activity which satisfies workflow control logic but violates specified time constraints is actually insignificant. So a workflow model requires time specification and verification before it is instanced and executed to guarantee the correctness of time behavior in WorkFlow Management Systems (WFMS). For the important limitation of actual WFMS, a Petri nets-based workflow modeling method for time constraints is put forward in this paper. Firstly, we extend Workflow nets with time constraints and call the new nets Timing Constraint WorkFlow nets (TCWF-nets), then after analyzing the timing property of WorkFlow nets (WF-nets), the schedulability analysis algorithm of TCWF-nets is proposed. Research results show that our method can roundly describe time information and has important reference value in enriching the time constraint modeling in WFMS.

Abstract:Workflow model analysis is performed at logic, temporal, and performance levels. This paper mainly deals with the performance level issues. Workflow net (WF-net) is extended with time information to the timing workflow net (TWF-net). To provide a formal framework for modeling and analyzing workflow, this paper proposes a multidimension workflow net (MWF-net) that include multiple TWF-nets and the organization and resource information. The algorithm to decompose a free-choice and acyclic Petri nets (PN) into a set of T-components is extended to a TWF-net containing iteration structures. Then, resource availability and workload analysis is performed. A method for computing the lower bound of average turnaround time of transaction instances processed in a MWF-net is proposed. Finally a case study is used to show that the proposed method can be effectively utilized in practice.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to present the ability of Petri nets and component software technologies to face a kind of distributed workflow systems problems. These problems are characterized by collaborating between intra-originations and inter-origination. First, we will introduce how to modeling workflow by Petri nets. A Petri net is graphic formal method. We use Petri nets to modeling workflow that can be analysis workflow properties. Finally, we try to build a modeling architecture. This modeling architecture cites Petri nets and component software technology to modeling workflow in every organization. We called component architecture specification (CAS). The CAS model provides an effectively way to deal with large and complexity in the application of formal model. We focus on the workflow modeling by CAS.

Abstract:The analysis of a workflow model is classified into logic, temporal, and performance levels. To avoid the run-time congestion of a workflow model, the problem of timing boundedness verification of a workflow model is put forward. We extend the WorkFlow nets (WF-nets) with resource and time information as the Multi-Dimension WorkFlow nets (MDWF-nets), then the model mapping from a workflow model built by the WfMC's graphic process modeling language to the MDWF-nets is discussed in detail. According to the free-choice characteristics of workflow model for business process, an algorithm for decomposing a free-choice MDWF-nets based workflow model into a set of T-component is proposed. Then, taking into account the resource view of a workflow model, the method of verifying the timing boundedness of a workflow model is given.

Abstract:For solving flexible manufacturing system (FMS) scheduling problems based on Petri net execution, search algorithms need fewer redundant states in the reachability graph and a more efficient heuristic function to guide its expansion. In this paper, we illustrate that place-timed Petri nets (PTPNs) own advantages in restraining redundant states while transition-timed Petri nets (TTPNs) are beneficial for developing more efficient heuristic functions. We then propose a hybrid framework of the PTPN and TTPN. In this framework, a PTPN is used to construct the search algorithm and TTPN markings are transformed into PTPN markings. The lower bound of makespan can be calculated through a TTPN heuristic function to guide the search algorithm. As a result, overall search effort can be greatly reduced. The results demonstrate that the proposed method performs much better than existing methods.

Abstract:Workflow management systems provide a cooperative-work environment for the modern enterprises, which can availably manage enterprise business process and enhance its business competence. In order to efficiently manage the schedule of business processes, it is necessary to provide a schedule estimating method for workflow process model. The process modeled by workflow net based on Petri nets is difficult to be estimated for its schedule and total time directly. While in traditional schedule planning, the PERT diagram is an available technology. This paper introduces time concept into the workflow net and presents a transformation algorithm from LMST-invariant's subnet to PERT diagram based on LMST-invariant decomposition. According to the resulting PERT diagram, the schedule and total time of workflow process model can estimated.

Abstract:This paper presents a method for modeling extended interval temporal logic (EITL) with Time Petri Nets (TPN). With TPN, the specifications of a system given by temporal statements can be transformed into a representation of graph, and the analysis techniques of TPN can be used for model solution. A new inference algorithm based on TPN and inequation rules is also proposed. With this algorithm, unknown temporal relations among the extended temporal intervals can be inferred from the known ones. Using this method, we can infer temporal relations qualitatively even if specific numerical value are not known. On the condition of knowing specific numerical value, inferring procedure can be simplified, and inferring result is unique. So it is more practical and more straightforward than the inference method which only uses inequation rules. Finally, the TPN model of extended interval temporal logic is extended to enhance its ability of modeling and analyzing parallel relations as well as conflict relations.

Abstract:Recently the study of workflow diagrams has received considerable attention in business process modelling. Formal methods such as Petri nets have been used to analyze and verify of logical properties. However, to our best knowledge, due to the complexity caused by the extreme flexible nature of workflow processes, little work has been done on the performance analysis for workflow diagrams except intensive simulations or approximation analysis based on Stochastic Petri net (SPN) or queueing theory. In this paper, timed workflow diagrams with both AND and OR logic will be modelled and analyzed as stochastic min-max systems. We will provide provable bounds on average tournaround time. The OR logic (known also as the Discriminator [1] ) requires that a downstream event happens whenever one of the upstream events happens. This is different from the AND logic modelling synchronization which requires that the output event happens when all input events happen.

Abstract:Time management in workflow systems is crucial in determining and controlling the life cycle of a workflow process. Research on time modeling and analysis is important to guarantee workflow plans to be efficiently implemented and to make enterprises more competitive. Time WF-nets derived from time Petri nets and WF-nets are an effective model for workflow time management. In this paper, considering multiple instances of one workflow model run concurrently, we concern how to determine the workflow instance arrival cycle in order to make the waiting time of each instance as short as possible. Meanwhile the safety property of Time WF-nets is preserved. The key contribution of our work is twofold. First, instance arrival cycle is calculated in order to satisfy the safety property of Time WF-nets. Second, performance evaluation for Time WF-nets is proposed, which is based on instance arrival cycle and instance throughput cycle derived from safety analysis.

Abstract:Along with the application of workflow in the area of industry and business, workflow modelling techniques encounter a great challenge. The power of expressiveness and analysis is one of the key problems in workflow modelling. Based on a rigorous analysis of various workflow models, description net (DWF_net for short) was proposed based on Petri-net. In DWF_net control variable (CV for short) was introduced for describing complex data structure and transition consisted of entry function and body function. Some mechanisms were added to allow for a direct support of complex process description. DWF_net could be mapped onto Petri-net by peeling the semantic information of case. So the analysis method of DWF_net was built on Petri-net analysis techniques. Finally, an industrial example was introduced to illustrate how to apply the proposed model to describe and analysis various complex process.
Modeling and analyzing of uncertain time for multi-process of workflows with resource constraints

Abstract:Because of imprecise measurement,incomplete information,fuzzy or fault description,etc,the temporal information of some workflows is usually indeterminate(or uncertain).According to the actual need for uncertain temporal modeling and analysis in workflow system,based on possibility theory,the concept of extended fuzzy timing workflow nets(EFTWFN) is proposed,which can describe all uncertain temporal information in a workflow.Under the condition of considering resource constraints,the method to analyze multi-process of EFTWFN models is presented.First of all,several inference rules between transitions of workflows are defined on the basis of EFTWFN and linear logic.Then,the total model is reduced and analyzed gradually according to the rules.The method can solve the qualitative and quantitative problems for concurrent workflows with resource constraints.Furthermore,it has higher efficiency and can complete the process of inference in the linear time complexity.In the end,an application of the method is illustrated through an example in manufacturing enterprise and its validity is indicated by simulation.

Abstract:This paper presents a method for modeling and analyzing workflows based on temporal logic of actions (TLA). After a brief review of TLA, it presents the semantics of workflow process using TLA and illustrates how to model and analyse workflows using TLA. In TLA, both the workflow model and its properties are modeled by TLA formulas. Analysis of workflow model in TLA is carried out by verification of the implication relationship between two formulas. Finally, the process of modeling and analysis is validated through a case study.
