Abstract:Workflow systems now face a difficulty that most Workflow Management Systems (WfMS) only support few enterprises' existing applications and this problem has been the supreme bottleneck. Without uniform standard of integration, deployments of WfMS must be limited by exterior applications. So bringing a new application-independent integration framework forward becomes an urgent affair of WfMS. This paper imports Web Service and Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) into the reference model of WfMC and introduces our extended workflow model which can support Web Service and other heterogeneous applications. A WfMS prototype based on the extended workflow model and its deployment into the Management Information System of a virtual enterprise are also presented.

Abstract:Time management is a crucial part of workflow management software systems, and is also a serious limitation in applying workflow technologies to complex enterprises. Doing researches for time modeling is important to enhance the flexibility of workflow management software systems, to guarantee workflow plan to be efficiently executed and to make enterprises more competitive. The key of time management lies in whether time information is effectively modeled. This paper first introduces the time issues in workflow systems, then surveys the actual status of time modeling and analysis, which involve how time constraints to be modeled and analyzed, how temporal consistency to be verified and time violations to be handled. Based on the evaluation of existing research methods, we indicate the developing trends of time management in workflow systems. Supporting for time management provides a good guidance for developing high flexible and practical workflow management systems.

Abstract:Workflow model analysis is performed at logic, temporal, and performance levels. This paper mainly deals with the performance level issues. Workflow net (WF-net) is extended with time information to the timing workflow net (TWF-net). To provide a formal framework for modeling and analyzing workflow, this paper proposes a multidimension workflow net (MWF-net) that include multiple TWF-nets and the organization and resource information. The algorithm to decompose a free-choice and acyclic Petri nets (PN) into a set of T-components is extended to a TWF-net containing iteration structures. Then, resource availability and workload analysis is performed. A method for computing the lower bound of average turnaround time of transaction instances processed in a MWF-net is proposed. Finally a case study is used to show that the proposed method can be effectively utilized in practice.

Abstract:A time model for service-based workflow was proposed after analyzing the difference on autonomy and dynamism between traditional workflow and service-based workflow.[Time management is a critical component for workflow management. Because services are autonomous and transparent to their users, it is difficult for process managers to get structure and time information in service-based processes.] In the proposed time model, a process is divided into a public and a private part. The former contains the details of the process, such as all the time and structure information; the latter is abstracted from the former and only involves the nessassary information. An algorithm with polynomial complexity was presented to generate the public part of the process from its private one. Using this time model, process managers can conveniently carry out time management based on the public part of the model without knowing the inner detail information of the (corresponding) private part. Thus, this model ensures the security of processes.

Abstract:In recent years a significant body of research has been dedicated to the analysis and verification of workflows without taking into account the temporal dimension of activities involved. Once the temporal aspects of the activities in a process description are taken into account, various types of synchronization anomalies and other undesirable behavior may be detected. In this paper, we use a timed Petri nets to represent workflows and introduce a set of linear inference algorithms for the quantitative analysis of temporal constraints of workflows. We apply our models to the analysis of several workflow patterns.

Abstract:The practical applications of workflow management system (WFMS) demand that WFMS should support dynamic changing. To satisfy this request the designing model of traditional workflow must be improved. In this paper, a dynamic three dimensional meta-model is proposed. The meta-model is derived from the traditional laws of building model and the laws of changing. After re-surveying a three dimensional workflow model, which comprises process model,organization model and information model, the meta model describes the dynamic characteristics behaving in objects of process, activity, activity attributes and organization. A workflow model educed from this meta-model will possess the ability of interacting with human and the ability of handling dynamic changing. The meta-model works in the way that it defines the dynamic characteristics as many as possible at the design stage and the changes in run-time can be confined in the pre-defined schema.This approach will enable WFMS to be flexible without losing the process control.

Abstract:Cooperation Management is one of the most important subjects of the researches on CSCW, which intends to mediate the cooperative relations between workgroup members in the integrated CSCW supporting system, but not to focus on how to implement the single cooperative work itself. Getting inside view of the cooperation process, we are convinced that there exist mainly three cooperative relations in the process, which are hierarchy relation、constraint relation and temporal relation. To describe and manage the cooperative relations effectively, we purpose here a concept of “Task Management ” ( TM ) and its model, TAMM( Task—Activity Management Modal), followed by a prototypical system based on them. In this paper, we begin with the introduction of some existing models and systems, next depict the three relations, with the concept of TM and TAMM, then give an overview of our prototype system and the summary at last.

Abstract:With more and more applications of workflow technology , the new demands occur. Workflow systems must be flexible and dynamic in order to effectively adapt for dynamic, uncertain and error-prone collaborative work environments. This paper expands the workflow model proposed by Workflow Management Coalition and then presents a dynamic workflow model. Based on this dynamic workflow model, a workflow management system TH-workflow is designed. TH-workflow has the functions of flexible process control and of supporting dynamic process changes. The functions of the system are organized in 3 levels, they are application level, function level and implementation level. Every level has the corresponding contributions to system services and dynamic control.
