Abstract:Leaf dark respiration (Rd) accounts for approximately 50% of plant respiration. The acclimation of plant respiration to temperature weakens the positive feedback to global warming. Most existing land surface models (LSMs) adopt an empirical leaf respiration scheme with a constant Rd25 (leaf dark respiration rate at 25°C) for each vegetation type, since there is no acceptable theory of Rd acclimation and how it varies temporally and spatially. Here we propose that Rd25 adjusts to prior nighttime temperature (Tnight) to maintain the ratio of Rd to photosynthesis capacity (Vcmax) approximately constant. To test this hypothesis and explore the time scale of acclimation, we predict Rd25 over different time windows and evaluate these predictions using data from 14 sites from two datasets (Boreal Forest Warming at an Ecotone in Danger (B4WarmED) experiment and Leaf Carbon Exchange dataset (LCE)), one of which provides measurements through time and the other across spatial gradients. Predictions that account for the combined effects of Vcmax and Tnight have better predictive power for all species (mean R2=0.4) than considering the effect of one factor alone. Predictions of acclimation on different timescales show that Vcmax and Tnight averaged over the past fortnight explain the most variation in observed Rd25. These results could provide an alternative solution to the leaf respiration schemes used in LSMs.

Abstract:Plant respiration is an important contributor to the proposed positive global carbon‐cycle feedback to climate change. However, as a major component, leaf mitochondrial (‘dark’) respiration (Rd) differs among species adapted to contrasting environments and is known to acclimate to sustained changes in temperature. No accepted theory explains these phenomena or predicts its magnitude. Here we propose that the acclimation of Rd follows an optimal behaviour related to the need to maintain long‐term average photosynthetic capacity (Vcmax) so that available environmental resources can be most efficiently used for photosynthesis. To test this hypothesis, we extend photosynthetic co‐ordination theory to predict the acclimation of Rd to growth temperature via a link to Vcmax, and compare predictions to a global set of measurements from 112 sites spanning all terrestrial biomes. This extended co‐ordination theory predicts that field‐measured Rd and Vcmax accessed at growth temperature (Rd,tg and Vcmax,tg) should increase by 3.7% and 5.5% per degree increase in growth temperature. These acclimated responses to growth temperature are less steep than the corresponding instantaneous responses, which increase 8.1% and 9.9% per degree of measurement temperature for Rd and Vcmax respectively. Data‐fitted responses proof indistinguishable from the values predicted by our theory, and smaller than the instantaneous responses. Theory and data are also shown to agree that the basal rates of both Rd and Vcmax assessed at 25°C (Rd,25 and Vcmax,25) decline by ~4.4% per degree increase in growth temperature. These results provide a parsimonious general theory for Rd acclimation to temperature that is simpler—and potentially more reliable—than the plant functional type‐based leaf respiration schemes currently employed in most ecosystem and land‐surface models.

Abstract:Stem respiration is a key driver of carbon flux from ecosystems to the atmosphere, yet its response to global warming remains poorly constrained. In particular it has been proposed that stem respiration acclimates to changing temperatures, which could have large implications for carbon cycling under climate change, but no theory exists to predict acclimated respiration rates. Here, we hypothesized that stem respiration is physiologically linked to transpiration in order to maintain hydraulic continuity. We then use that linkage, combined with Eco-evolutionary optimality theory, to develop a theoretical prediction of the temperature sensitivity of both acclimated and instantaneous stem respiration. Leveraging an extensive global dataset, we observe temperature sensitivities of stem respiration across geographical and seasonal variations that are consistent with this prediction. Our findings reveal that stem respiration contributes approximately a quarter of the global above-ground auto-trophic respiration, with an estimated annual emission of around 11.20 ± 5.88 Pg C—comparable to total anthropogenic emissions. Importantly, incorporating thermal acclimation of stem respiration into projections significantly reduces predicted land ecosystem carbon emissions by 4.41 and 9.56 Pg C under the SSP126 and SSP585 scenarios, respectively, for the 21st century.

Abstract:Evaluating leaf day respiration rate (RL), which is believed differ from that in the dark (RDk), is essential for predicting global carbon cycles under climate change. Several studies have suggested that atmospheric CO2 impacts RL. However, the magnitude of such an impact and associated mechanisms remain uncertain. To explore the CO2 effect on RL, wheat (Triticum aestivum) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus) plants were grown under ambient (410 ppm) and elevated (820 ppm) CO2 mole fraction ([CO2]). RL was estimated from combined gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements using the Kok method, the Kok-Phi method, and a revised Kok method (Kok-Cc method). We found that elevated growth [CO2] led to an 8.4% reduction in RL and a 16.2% reduction in RDk in both species, in parallel to decreased leaf N and chlorophyll contents at elevated growth [CO2]. We also looked at short-term CO2 effects during gas exchange experiments. Increased RL or RL/RDk at elevated measurement [CO2] were found using the Kok and Kok-Phi methods, but not with the Kok-Cc method. This discrepancy was attributed to the unaccounted changes in Cc in the former methods. We found that the Kok and Kok-Phi methods underestimate RL and overestimate the inhibition of respiration under low irradiance conditions of the Kok curve, and the inhibition of RL was only 6%, representing 26% of the apparent Kok effect. We found no significant long-term CO2 effect on RL/RDk, originating from concurrent reduction in RL and RDk at elevated growth [CO2], and likely mediated by acclimation of nitrogen metabolism.

Abstract:Boreal regions are undergoing rapid climate change but our understanding of the long-term consequences for forest processes is hampered by limited knowledge of how trees acclimate to rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations and temperature. This study used the detailed canopy flux model MAESTRA to simulate the effects of elevated CO2 (eCO2) and warming on net photosynthesis (An) and transpiration (E) of mature boreal Norway spruce, investigating how these effects are influenced by the observed acclimation of photosynthetic capacity, respiration, stomatal behavior, and phenology. Without any type of acclimation, eCO2 increased shoot and crown An during the non-frost growing season by 23-44%, while warming only had a minor effect (±2%). Photosynthetic downregulation greatly decreased the positive effect under eCO2. Under warming, both stomatal and phenological acclimation had substantial effects on An but in opposite directions. Transpiration at shoot and crown level was greatly decreased (23-50%) by eCO2 and increased by warming (27-42%) in the absence of acclimation. However, both these effects were largely cancelled by stomatal acclimation. Effects of eCO2 on An were generally smaller at entire crown compared to shoot level, as a result of photosynthetic stimulation being smaller in shaded canopy positions. In addition, upregulation of respiration in eCO2 had a considerably larger negative effect on An at crown compared to shoot level. Overall, tree physiological acclimation generally acted to dampen non-acclimated responses. We conclude that photosynthetic and respiratory acclimation greatly reduce the positive effect of eCO2 on tree CO2 assimilation, while stomatal and phenological acclimation are crucial for annual water consumption under warming. These results highlight the critical need to account for acclimation in models.

Environmental controls on light inhibition of respiration and leaf and canopy daytime carbon exchange in a temperate deciduous forest

Abstract:Uncertainty in the estimation of daytime ecosystem carbon cycling due to the light inhibition of leaf respiration and photorespiration, and how these small fluxes vary through the growing season in the field, remains a confounding element in calculations of gross primary productivity and ecosystem respiration. Our study focuses on how phenology, short-term temperature changes and canopy position influence leaf-level carbon exchange in Quercus rubra L. (red oak) at Harvard Forest in central Massachusetts, USA. Using leaf measurements and eddy covariance, we also quantify the effect of light inhibition on estimates of daytime respiration at leaf and ecosystem scales. Measured rates of leaf respiration in the light and dark were highest in the early growing season and declined in response to 10-day prior air temperatures (P < 0.01), evidence of within-season thermal acclimation. Leaf respiration was significantly inhibited by light (27.1 ± 2.82% inhibited across all measurements), and this inhibition varied with the month of measurement; greater inhibition was observed in mid-summer leaves compared with early- and late-season leaves. Increases in measurement temperature led to higher rates of respiration and photorespiration, though with a less pronounced positive effect on photosynthesis; as a result, carbon-use efficiency declined with increasing leaf temperature. Over the growing season when we account for seasonally variable light inhibition and basal respiration rates, our modeling approaches found a cumulative 12.9% reduction of leaf-level respiration and a 12.8% reduction of canopy leaf respiration, resulting in a 3.7% decrease in total ecosystem respiration compared with estimates that do not account for light inhibition in leaves. Our study sheds light on the environmental controls of the light inhibition of daytime leaf respiration and how integrating this phenomenon and other small fluxes can reduce uncertainty in current and future projections of terrestrial carbon cycling.

Abstract:Measurements of respiratory properties have often been made at a single time point either during daytime using dark-adapted leaves or during night-time. The influence of the day-night cycle on respiratory metabolism has received less attention but is crucial to understand photosynthesis and photorespiration. Here, we examined how CO2- and O2-based rates of leaf dark respiration (Rdark) differed between midday (after 30-minute dark adaptation) and midnight in eight C3 and C4 grasses. We used these data to calculate the respiratory quotient (RQ; ratio of CO2 release to O2 uptake), and assessed relationships between Rdark and leaf metabolome. Rdark was higher at midday than midnight, especially in C4 species. The day-night difference in Rdark was more evident when expressed on a CO2 than O2 basis, with the RQ being higher at midday than midnight in all species, except in rice (Oryza sativa). Metabolomic analyses showed little correlation of Rdark or RQ with leaf carbohydrates (sucrose, glucose, fructose or starch) but strong multivariate relationships with other metabolites. The results suggest that rates of Rdark and differences in RQ were determined by several concurrent CO2-producing and O2-consuming metabolic pathways, not only the tricarboxylic acid cycle (organic acids utilisation), but also the pentose phosphate pathway, galactose metabolism, and secondary metabolism. As such, Rdark was time-, type- (C3/C4) and species-dependent, due to the use of different substrates.

Abstract:Peatlands contain one-third of global soil carbon (C), but the responses of peatland ecosystems to long-term warming are not well understood. Here, we pursue an emergent understanding of warming effects on ecosystem C fluxes at peatlands by constraining a process-oriented model, the Terrestrial ECOsystem (TECO) model, with observation data from a long-term warming experiment at the Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments (SPRUCE) site. Model-based assessments show that ecosystem-level photosynthesis and autotrophic respiration exhibited significant thermal acclimation, with temperature sensitivities being linearly decreased with warming. Using the thermal acclimated parameter values, simulated gross primary production (GPP), net primary production (NPP), and plant autotrophic respiration (Ra), were all lower than those simulated with non-thermal acclimated parameter values. In contrast, ecosystem respiration (ER) simulated with thermal acclimated parameter values was higher than that simulated with non-thermal acclimated parameter values. Net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) was much higher after constraining model parameters with observational data from the warming treatments, releasing C at a rate of 28.3 g C m-2 yr-1 °C-1. Our data-model integration study suggests that peatlands are likely to release more C than previously estimated. Earth system models may overestimate C uptake by peatlands under warming if physiological thermal acclimation of plants is not incorporated. Thus, it is critical to consider the long-term physiological thermal acclimation of plants in the models to better predict global C dynamics under future climate and their feedback to climate change.
Carbon allocation in early successional tree species at elevated air humidity and different soil nitrogen sources

Abstract:Global climate change scenarios predict increasing air temperature, enhanced precipitation and air humidity for Northern latitudes. We&#8239;investigated the effects of elevated air relative humidity (RH) and different inorganic nitrogen&#8239;sources&#8239;(NO3-, NH4+) on above- and belowground traits in different tree species, with particular emphasis on rhizodeposition rates. Silver birch, hybrid aspen and Scots pine saplings were grown in PERCIVAL growth chambers with stabile temperature, light intensity and two different air humidity conditions: moderate (mRH, 65% at day and 80% at night) and elevated (eRH, 80% at day and night). The collection of fine root exudates was conducted by a culture-based cuvette method and total organic carbon content was determined by Vario TOC analyser. Fine root respiration was measured with an infra-red gas analyser CIRAS 2.&#8239;&#160;We analysed species-specific biomass allocation, water and rhizodeposition fluxes, foliar and fine root traits in response to changing environmental conditions. The&#8239;eRH&#8239;significantly decreased the transpiration flux in all species. In birch the transpiration flux was also affected by the nitrogen source. The average carbon exudation rate for aspen, birch and pine varied from 2 to 3 &#8239;&#956;g&#8239;C g-1&#8239;day&#8239;-1. The exudation rates for deciduous tree species tended to increase at&#8239;eRH, while conversely decreased for coniferous trees (p=0.045), coinciding with the changes in biomass allocation.&#8239;C flux released by fine root respiration varied more than the fine root exudation, whereas the highest root respiration was found in silver birch and lowest in aspen. At eRH the above and belowground&#8239;biomass ratio in aspen increased, at the expense of decreased root biomass and root respiration.&#8239;&#160;Moreover,&#8239;eRH&#8239;significantly affected fine root morphology, whereas the response of specific root area was reverse for deciduous and coniferous tree species. However, fine roots with lower root tissue density had higher C exudation rate. Our findings underline the importance of considering species-specific differences by&#8239;elucidating tree&#8217;s&#8239;acclimation&#8239;to environmental factors and their&#8239;interactions.&#8239;&#8239;&#160;
Nocturnal plant respiration is under strong non-temperature control

Abstract:Abstract Most biological rates depend on the rate of respiration. Temperature variation is typically considered the main driver of daily plant respiration rates, assuming a constant daily respiration rate at a set temperature. Here, we show empirical data from 31 species from temperate and tropical biomes to demonstrate that the rate of plant respiration at a constant temperature decreases monotonically with time through the night, on average by 25% after 8 h of darkness. Temperature controls less than half of the total nocturnal variation in respiration. A new universal formulation is developed to model and understand nocturnal plant respiration, combining the nocturnal decrease in the rate of plant respiration at constant temperature with the decrease in plant respiration according to the temperature sensitivity. Application of the new formulation shows a global reduction of 4.5 −6 % in plant respiration and an increase of 7-10% in net primary production for the present-day.

Abstract:To realistically simulate climate feedbacks from the land surface to the atmosphere, models must replicate the responses of plants to environmental changes. Several processes, operating at various scales, cause the responses of photosynthesis and plant respiration to temperature and CO2 to change over time of exposure to new or changing environmental conditions. Here, we review the latest empirical evidence that short‐term responses of plant carbon exchange rates to temperature and CO2 are modified by plant photosynthetic and respiratory acclimation as well as biogeochemical feedbacks. We assess the frequency with which these responses have been incorporated into vegetation models, and highlight recently designed algorithms that can facilitate their incorporation. Few models currently include representations of the long‐term plant responses that have been recorded by empirical studies, likely because these responses are still poorly understood at scales relevant for models. Studies show that, at a regional scale, simulated carbon flux between the atmosphere and vegetation can dramatically differ between versions of models that do and do not include acclimation. However, the realism of these results is difficult to evaluate, as algorithm development is still in an early stage, and a limited number of data are available. We provide a series of recommendations that suggest how a combination of empirical and modeling studies can produce mechanistic algorithms that will realistically simulate longer term responses within global‐scale models.

Abstract:Plant metabolism faces a challenge of investing enough enzymatic capacity to a pathway without overinvestment. As it takes energy and resources to build, operate, and maintain enzymes, there are benefits and drawbacks to accurately matching capacity to the pathway influx. The relationship between functional capacity and physiological load could be explained through symmorphosis, which would quantitatively match enzymatic capacity to pathway influx. Alternatively, plants could maintain excess enzymatic capacity to manage unpredictable pathway influx. In this study, we use photorespiration as a case study to investigate these two hypotheses in Betula papyrifera . This involves altering photorespiratory influx by manipulating the growth environment, via changes in CO 2 concentration and temperature, to determine how photorespiratory capacity acclimates to environmental treatments. Surprisingly, the results from these measurements indicate that there is no plasticity in photorespiratory capacity in B. papyrifera , and that a fixed capacity is maintained under each growth condition. The fixed capacity is likely due to the existence of reserve capacity in the pathway that manages unpredictable photorespiratory influx in dynamic environments. Additionally, we found that B. papyrifera had a constant net carbon assimilation under each growth condition due to an adjustment of functional rubisco activity driven by changes in activation state. These results provide insight into the acclimation ability and limitations of B. papyrifera to future climate scenarios currently predicted in the next century.

Abstract:Leaf photosynthetic and respiratory processes are important for the terrestrial carbon cycle. Leaf physiological traits, such as the maximum carboxylation rate and leaf respiration rate at 25˚C (Vcmax,25, R25), the key parameters affecting photosynthesis and respiration rate, acclimate to environmental changes. However, many land surface models (LSMs) assume a constant R25 and Vcmax,25 by plant functional types (PFTs) due to limited understanding of plant acclimation processes. Here, we incorporated the acclimation of photosynthesis and leaf respiration into a land surface model (Noah MP) using the Eco-Evolutionary Optimality principle (Noah MP-EEO), and evaluated the performances of the EEO and standard schemes to simulate photosynthesis and respiration using global plant trait measurements and data from FLUXNET. We demonstrate that R25 and Vcmax,25 varied temporally and spatially within the same PFT (C.V. >20%). This behaviour is captured by the EEO scheme (R2 =0.69 and 0.62 for temporal and spatial variations) but ignored by the standard scheme. At the FLUXNET sites, the standard scheme underestimates gross primary production (GPP) but this is reduced in the EEO scheme. The EEO scheme explains 66% of the variation of site-annual GPP compared to 55% in the standard scheme. The EEO scheme also simulates the variation of leaf respiration (Rleaves) better than the standard scheme (R2 increases from 0.45 to 0.77). The EEO scheme shows less temperature sensitivity than the standard scheme because of acclimation. This study indicates that adopting EEO approaches that do not require PFT-specific parameters improves carbon cycle predictions and could be used in Earth system models for better understanding the climate-carbon feedback.

Abstract:We test key predictions from metabolic theory relating to the scaling of metabolic temperature sensitivity to whole‐plant growth using a temperature‐controlled growth experiment. We show that acclimation of photosynthetic physiology to changing growth temperature mediates the temperature response of growth rate, an effect which is not accounted for in conventional metabolic scaling models. The temperature dependence of carbon assimilation—from leaf photosynthesis to ecosystem productivity—is hypothesised to be driven by the kinetics of Rubisco‐catalysed carboxylation and electron transport. However, photosynthetic physiology acclimates to changes in temperature, which may decouple temperature dependencies at higher levels of organisation from the acute temperature sensitivity of photosynthesis. Here, we integrate relative growth rate theory, metabolic theory and biochemical photosynthesis theory to develop a carbon budget model of plant growth that accounts for photosynthetic acclimation to temperature. We test its predictions using a novel experimental approach enabling concurrent measurement of the temperature sensitivity of acute photosynthesis, acclimated photosynthesis and growth rate. We demonstrate for the first time that photosynthetic acclimation mediates how carbon assimilation kinetics 'scale up' from leaf photosynthesis to whole‐plant growth. We also find that existing models of photosynthetic acclimation are unable to predict features of growth rate responses to temperature in our system.

Abstract:Photosynthetic acclimation to both warming and elevated CO2 of boreal trees remains a key uncertainty in modelling the response of photosynthesis to future climates. We investigated the impact of increased growth temperature and elevated CO2 on photosynthetic capacity (Vcmax and Jmax) in mature trees of two North American boreal conifers, tamarack and black spruce. We show that Vcmax and Jmax at a standard temperature of 25°C did not change with warming, while Vcmax and Jmax at their thermal optima (Topt) and growth temperature (Tg) increased. Moreover, Vcmax and Jmax at either 25°C, Topt or Tg decreased with elevated CO2. The Jmax/Vcmax ratio decreased with warming when assessed at both Topt and Tg but did not significantly vary at 25°C. The Jmax/Vcmax increased with elevated CO2 at either reference temperature. We found no significant interaction between warming and elevated CO2 on all traits. If this lack of interaction between warming and elevated CO2 on the Vcmax, Jmax and Jmax/Vcmax ratio is a general trend, it would have significant implications for improving photosynthesis representation in vegetation models. However, future research is required to investigate the widespread nature of this response in a larger number of species and biomes.

Abstract:Plant respiration plays a critical role in the C balance of plants. Respiration is highly temperature sensitive and small temperature-induced increases in whole-plant respiration could change the C balance of plants that operate close to their light-compensation points from positive to negative. Nonstructural carbohydrates are thought to play an important role in controlling respiration and its temperature sensitivity, but this role has not been studied at the whole-plant level. We measured respiration of whole Ardisia crenata Sims. seedlings and tested the hypothesis that darkness-induced C starvation would decrease the temperature sensitivity of whole-plant respiration. Compared with control plants, sugar and starch concentrations in darkened plants declined over time in all organs. Similarly, whole-plant respiration decreased. However, the temperature sensitivity of whole-plant respiration, expressed as the proportional increase in respiration per 10°C warming (Q10), increased with progressive C starvation. We hypothesise that growth respiration was suppressed in darkened plants and that whole-plant respiration represented maintenance respiration almost exclusively, which is more temperature sensitive. Alternatively, changes in the respiratory substrate during C starvation or increased involvement of alternative oxidase pathway respiration may explain the increase in Q10. Carbohydrates are important for respiration but it appears that even in C-starved A. crenata plants, carbohydrate availability does not limit respiration during short-term warming.

Abstract:To further our understanding of how sustained changes in temperature affect the carbon economy of rice (Oryza sativa), hydroponically grown plants of the IR64 cultivar were developed at 30°C/25°C (day/night) before being shifted to 25/20°C or 40/35°C. Leaf messenger RNA and protein abundance, sugar and starch concentrations, and gas-exchange and elongation rates were measured on preexisting leaves (PE) already developed at 30/25°C or leaves newly developed (ND) subsequent to temperature transfer. Following a shift in growth temperature, there was a transient adjustment in metabolic gene transcript abundance of PE leaves before homoeostasis was reached within 24 hr, aligning with Rdark (leaf dark respiratory CO2 release) and An (net CO2 assimilation) changes. With longer exposure, the central respiratory protein cytochrome c oxidase (COX) declined in abundance at 40/35°C. In contrast to Rdark , An was maintained across the three growth temperatures in ND leaves. Soluble sugars did not differ significantly with growth temperature, and growth was fastest with extended exposure at 40/35°C. The results highlight that acclimation of photosynthesis and respiration is asynchronous in rice, with heat-acclimated plants exhibiting a striking ability to maintain net carbon gain and growth when exposed to heat-wave temperatures, even while reducing investment in energy-conserving respiratory pathways.

Abstract:We simulate the reduction in leaf nitrogen demand due to acclimation of photosynthesis to elevated CO2 under future CO2 conditions and its effect on ecosystem processes. Nitrogen savings and reallocation due to acclimation of photosynthesis to future, elevated CO2 caused a 50.3% increase in ecosystem carbon stocks by 2100 compared to a simulation that did not allow for saved nitrogen to be reallocated. These results suggest that land surface models may overestimate future ecosystem nitrogen limitation if they do not incorporate leaf nitrogen savings resulting from photosynthetic acclimation to elevated CO2. Photosynthesis is the largest flux of carbon between the atmosphere and Earth's surface and is driven by enzymes that require nitrogen, namely, ribulose‐1,5‐bisphosphate (RuBisCO). Thus, photosynthesis is a key link between the terrestrial carbon and nitrogen cycle, and the representation of this link is critical for coupled carbon‐nitrogen land surface models. Models and observations suggest that soil nitrogen availability can limit plant productivity increases under elevated CO2. Plants acclimate to elevated CO2 by downregulating RuBisCO and thus nitrogen in leaves, but this acclimation response is not currently included in land surface models. Acclimation of photosynthesis to CO2 can be simulated by the photosynthetic optimality theory in a way that matches observations. Here, we incorporated this theory into the land surface component of the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (ELM). We simulated land surface carbon and nitrogen processes under future elevated CO2 conditions to 2100 using the RCP8.5 high emission scenario. Our simulations showed that when photosynthetic acclimation is considered, photosynthesis increases under future conditions, but maximum RuBisCO carboxylation and thus photosynthetic nitrogen demand decline. We analyzed two simulations that differed as to whether the saved nitrogen could be used in other parts of the plant. The allocation of saved leaf nitrogen to other parts of the plant led to (1) a direct alleviation of plant nitrogen limitation through reduced leaf nitrogen requirements and (2) an indirect reduction in plant nitrogen limitation through an enhancement of root growth that led to increased plant nitrogen uptake. As a result, reallocation of saved leaf nitrogen increased ecosystem carbon stocks by 50.3% in 2100 as compared to a simulation without reallocation of saved leaf nitrogen. These results suggest that land surface models may overestimate future ecosystem nitrogen limitation if they do not incorporate leaf nitrogen savings resulting from photosynthetic acclimation to elevated CO2.
