Abstract:Glasses with the compositions in mol % of 50ZnO:(50 − x)B2O3:0.5Eu2O3:xWO3, x = 0, 1, 3, 5 and 10 were obtained by applying the melt-quenching method and investigated by Raman spectroscopy, DSC analysis and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Raman spectra revealed that tungstate ions incorporate into the base zinc borate glass as tetrahedral [WO4]2− groups, and octahedral [WØ4O2]2− species with four bridging and two non-bridging oxygen atoms. There are also metaborate, [BØ2O]− and pyroborate units, [B2O5]4−, in the glass networks. The glasses are characterized by good transmission in the visible region, at about 80%. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra evidenced that WO3 is an appropriate constituent for the modification of zinc borate glass structure and for enhancing the Eu3+ luminescent intensity. The most intense luminescence peak observed, at 612 nm, suggests that the glasses are potential materials for red emission.

Abstract:The SrMgB6O11 glass samples were synthesized by a solid-state reaction route. Luminescence of SrMgB6O11:Eu2+,Mn2+ shows a broad blue emission band and a red emission band, which originates from Eu2+ occupying the Sr2+ sites and Mn2+ occupying the Mg2+ sites, respectively. The obtained samples exhibit a tunable color emission under an ultraviolet source by adjusting the relative proportion of Eu2+/Mn2+ properly. The energy transfer from Eu2+ to Mn2+ in SrMgB6O11 is observed to be very effective. The optimal composition of SrMgB6O11: 0.02Eu(2+), 0.12Mn(2+) generates white light, indicating that the obtained glass would be a good candidate for white light-emitting diodes applications. Abstract:The effect of the addition of Nb2O5 (up to 5 mol%) on the structure and luminescent properties of ZnO-B2O3 glass doped with 0.5 mol% (1.32 × 1022) Eu2O3 was investigated by applying infrared (IR), Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Through differential thermal analysis and density measurements, various physical properties such as molar volume, oxygen packing density and glass transition temperature were determined. IR and Raman spectra revealed that niobium ions enter into the base zinc borate glass structure as NbO4 tetrahedra and NbO6 octahedra. A strong red emission from the 5D0 level of Eu3+ ions was registered under near UV (392 nm) excitation using the 7F0 → 5L6 transition of Eu3+. The integrated fluorescence intensity ratio R (5D0 → 7F2/5D0 → 7F1) was calculated to estimate the degree of asymmetry around the active ion, suggesting a location of Eu3+ in non-centrosymmetric sites. The higher Eu3+ luminescence emission observed in zinc borate glasses containing 1–5 mol% Nb2O5 compared to the Nb2O5-free zinc borate glass evidences that Nb2O5 is an appropriate component for modifying the host glass structure and improving the emission intensity.

Abstract:Present work prepared a series of Eu2O3 and Dy2O3 co-doped aluminoborosilicate glasses with different network modifier addition by melting and annealing method.The emission spectra of these samples had been measured under UV light excitation.A combination of blue,green,yellow and red emission bands ascribed to transitions for Eu2+,Eu3+and Dy3+ions was shown for these glasses.It presented that the relative emission in-tensity could be adj usted with different network modifier oxides,and resulted in the change of luminescence col-or.White light emission could be obtained by appropriate network modifier oxides addition.Interestingly,it should be noted that the coexistence of Eu3+and Eu2+ions in the aluminoborosilicate glasses was observed ac-Cording to emission spectra.The Eu3+→Eu2+reduction degree decreased by substituting Li2O for ZnO,while it increased by substituting CaO for BaO.The change was discussed with the different optical basicity of the com-ponents.
Novel Eu3+-Doped Glasses in the MoO3-WO3-La2O3-B2O3 System: Preparation, Structure and Photoluminescent Properties

Abstract:Novel multicomponent glasses with nominal compositions of (50−x)MoO3:xWO3:25La2O3:25B2O3, x = 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 mol% doped with 3 mol % Eu2O3 were prepared using a conventional melt-quenching method. Their structure, thermal behavior and luminescent properties were investigated by Raman spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The optical properties of the glasses were investigated by UV–vis absorption spectroscopy and a determination of the refractive index. Physical parameters such as density, molar volume, oxygen molar volume and oxygen packing density were determined. The glasses are characterized by a high glass transition temperature. Raman analysis revealed that the glass structure is built up mainly from tetrahedral (MoO4)2− and (WO4)2− units providing Raman bands of around 317 cm−1, 341–352 cm−1, 832–820 cm−1 and 928–935 cm−1. At the same time, with the replacement of MoO3 with WO3 some fraction of WO6 octahedra are produced, the number of which increases with the increasing WO3 content. A strong red emission from the 5D0 level of Eu3+ ions was registered under near-UV (397 nm) excitation using the 7F0 → 5L6 transition of Eu3+. Photoluminescence (PL) emission gradually increases with increasing WO3 content, evidencing that WO3 is a more appropriate component than MoO3. The integrated fluorescence intensity ratio R (5D0 → 7F2/5D0 → 7F1) was calculated to estimate the degree of asymmetry around the active ion, suggesting a location of Eu3+ in non-centrosymmetric sites. All findings suggest that the investigated glasses are potential candidates for red light-emitting phosphors.

Structures and Optical Properties of Eu^3＋ Ion Doped Zinc-alumino-silicate Glass-ceramics

Abstract:In order to investigate the optical properties of Eu3＋ ion doped zinc-alumino-silicate glass-ceramics which were prepared by melting and heat treating processes,differential thermal analysis,X-ray powder diffractometry,and transmission electronic microscopy have been carried out to study the microstructure of the samples.Photoluminescence spectra have been measured to study the optical properties of the samples.The results showed that ZnO crystals with a size of about 10 nm were formed after having been heat-treated at 750℃ for 2 hours.Spherical ZnO nanocrystals were distributed in the glass matrix.The X-ray diffraction peak positions of the samples showed that the Eu3＋ has entered into the ZnO nano-crystals.With the increase of ZnO content and heat treatment time the luminescence intensity increased significantly.The luminescence intensity also increased with increasing concentration of doped Eu3＋.

Abstract:The luminescence properties of europium and dysprosium ions co-doped zinc–aluminoborosilicate glasses were analyzed. A combination of blue, green, yellow and red emission bands was shown for these glasses, and white light emission could be observed under UV light excitation. The color of luminescence could be adjusted by varying the proportions of europium and dysprosium. The concentration quenching effect was also investigated in this paper. Furthermore, the reduction of Eu3+→Eu2+ in air at high temperature was observed in the zinc–aluminoborosilicate glasses.

Abstract:In this paper, the crystallization behavior of 50ZnO:47B2O3:3Nb2O3:0.5Eu2O3 (G-0 h) glass has been investigated in detail by DSC, XRD and TEM analysis. The luminescent properties of the resulting glass-ceramics were also investigated. By XRD and TEM analysis, crystallization of several crystalline phases has been proved (α-Zn3B2O6, β-Zn3B2O6 and ZnNb2O6). By calculating crystal parameters, it was found that europium ions are successfully incorporated in the β-Zn3B2O6. Photo-luminescent spectra showed increased emission in the resulting glass-ceramic samples compared to the parent glass sample due to higher asymmetry of Eu3+ ions in the obtained crystalline phases. It was established that the optimum emission intensity is registered for glass-ceramic samples obtained after 25 h heat treatment of the parent glass.

Abstract:A series of Eu ion-doped aluminoborosilicate glasses was prepared by melt-quenching method and characterized by spectroscopic techniques, including Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), absorption, photoluminescence (PL), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The FTIR spectra showed that various glass structures formed when Al2O3 was partially replaced by B2O3. The PL characterization revealed that the emission intensity of Eu2+ ions firstly increased and then decreased with an increasing amount of Al2O3 replaced by B2O3. Meanwhile, the emission intensity ratio of [Eu2+]/[Eu3+] also followed the same trend. The EPR spectra confirmed the concentration variation of Eu2+ ions in the glass samples, which agreed well with the PL results. The possible mechanism of the effect of the glass network structure on the reduction behavior of Eu ions is discussed.

Abstract:Novel oxynitride glass–ceramics with tremendously improved quantum yield and adjustable color coordinates were prepared with the conventional melt-and-quench method and subsequent annealing heat treatment. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images revealed CaAl2Si2O8 and Y20N4Si12O48 crystalline phases were homogenously precipitated in the glass matrix. The optical absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectrum measurements showed that a large portion of Eu3+ ions were reduced into Eu2+ which were crystallized into CaAl2Si2O8 phase during the heat treatment by substituting Ca2+ ions in them. Emission spectra evidently show that Eu2+ and Eu3+ ions were preferentially incorporated in CaAl2Si2O8 and Y20N4Si12O48 crystalline phases, respectively. This assignment was further supported by cation ionic radii and local charge balances, as well as defect chemistry considerations. The total emission intensity including both Eu2+ and Eu3+ ions was enhanced with increasing the annealing temperature, due to the conversion of Eu3+ to Eu2+ and the enhanced quantum efficiency of Eu3+ in the crystalline phase as compared to the glass matrix. As a result, the quantum yields (QYs) of the glass–ceramics were also enhanced significantly from 2.07% (the precursor glass) up to 43.33% (the maximum of the glass–ceramics). The emission ratio of Eu2+/Eu3+ changed from <1.0 to >4.0, which led this novel glass–ceramics with adjustable color coordinates ranging from red to blue controlled by varying the annealing temperature.

Abstract:Eu3+ ions-doped zinc lithium borate glasses were prepared using the conventional melt-quenching technique, and their thermal, absorption, excitation, and emission properties were investigated. The wide hump observed in the X-ray diffraction spectrum analysis confirmed the amorphous behavior of the obtained glassy matrices. The density results showed that the zinc lithium borate glass with the addition of Eu2O3 had a more open structure. The direct and indirect optical energy band gaps (Eg) were calculated and found to decrease with increasing Eu2O3 concentration. Judd–Ofelt (JO) parameters have been calculated from luminescence spectral measurements, unlike other rare earth elements, which are calculated from optical absorption measurements. The luminescence intensity ratio of the 5D0 → 7F2 (electric dipole) transition to the 5D0→ 7F1 (magnetic dipole) transition was used to obtain the strength of the covalent/ionic bond between Eu3+ ions and the surrounding ligands. From the calculated properties, it was suggested that the present glass samples are suitable for use in red light-emitting devices.

Abstract:A new series of oxynitride glasses and glass ceramics were prepared by melt and heat treatment methods.The formation of CaAl2Si2O8,Ca2Al2SiO7 and Y20Si12O48N4crystals were precipitated in the glass ceramics,confirmed by XRD measurements.The luminescence spectra showed that an increasing amount of Eu3+could be reduced into Eu2+with the increase of Si3N4 content or by the subsequent annealing.Such Eu3+to Eu2+reduction was deduced either from 6Eu3++2N3-→6Eu2++N2↑ or from Eu3+substituting Ca2+.Besides emitting red-orange luminescence of Eu3+:f-f transitions like the precursor glasses,the glass ceramics also presented new blue-green super-broad emission band corresponding to Eu2+:d-f transitions.By combining blue-green and red-orange emissions,the oxynitride glass ceramics showed white color luminescence with improved luminescence intensity and color rendering index,thus demonstrating a highly potential LED illumination application prospect.

Abstract:It was shown that complex oxide compounds of bismuth(III) BiPO4, K5Bi5(PO4)6, K2Bi(PO4)(MoO4), KBi(MoO4)2, K5Bi(MoO4)4, and BiVO4 doped with europium(III) exhibit high-intensity luminescence in the red region of the spectrum. It was found that the intensity ratio of the luminescence bands for the 5D0→7F2 and 5D0→7F1 transitions increases with increase in the degree of deformation of the BiO8 coordination polyhedra. The effect of the degree of deformation of the BiIIIO8 coordination polyhedron on the intensity of the bands in the photoluminescence spectra of the studied compounds at room temperature was analyzed.

Abstract:In the present work, the Europium doped Zinc Oxide (ZnO: Eu) thin films were elaborated using spray pyrolysis technique. We are interested in investigating the structural properties, photoluminescence (PL) and third harmonic generation (THG) of the elaborated films. The structural properties of as-prepared thin films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). It confirms that all deposited thin films of Europium doped Zinc Oxide are crystallized in the hexagonal wurtzite structure. Both undoped and doped europium thin films show strong preferred c-axis orientation. Photoluminescence (PL) emission from Europium doped Zinc Oxide thin films, under excitation by 266 nm, shows characteristic transitions of Europium ( 5 D 0 → 7 F 0 , 5 D 0 → 7 F 1 , 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 , etc.). It reveals the good incorporation of Eu 3+ ions in the ZnO host. Additionally, the 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 is the most intense transition usually observed for Eu 3+ embedded in materials of Zinc Oxide lattice. The dependence of third-order nonlinear susceptibility on doping rate was evaluated. The highest nonlinear susceptibility χ 3 is obtained for the 5% Europium doped ZnO sample.

Abstract:Glasses in SiO2–ZnO–BaO system with the different ZnO/BaO ratio were studied. In some cases, BaF2 was introduced to substitute for BaO on the equal base. Photoluminescent spectra showed that ZnO in glass matrices behaved somewhat differently from ZnO crystals. Especially, the introduction of fluorine ions led to dramatic shift of UV emission band of glasses closer to that of ZnO crystals. Raman spectral analysis provided consistent results. In particular, Raman bands in the high frequency region are sensitive to effects of different ZnO/BaO or BaF2/BaO ratio on structure of glasses.

Abstract:The Eu-doped xBaO-(100-x)B2O3 and xBaF2-(100-x)B2O3 glasses were prepared by melting method under a reducing atmosphere, exhibiting broadband luminescence peaks of 4f65 d1 -> 4f7 in the excitation range of 300-400 nm. PL, EPR, and XPS were used to analyze the effects of the Ba2+, F-, and Eu ion content on the Eu2+/ Eu3+ ratio and Eu2+ emission wavelength and intensity. An excess of Ba2+ ions with a high optical basicity reduced the Eu2+/Eu3+ ratio and enhanced the ligand field strength surrounding the Eu2+ ions, decreasing the Eu2+ luminescence intensity and red-shifting the luminescence peak. The addition of F- had the effect of diminishing the optical basicity, decreasing the OH groups content and eliminating Eu2+ clusters, which not only mitigated the effects of the Ba2+ ions, but also significantly enhanced the luminescence intensity of Eu2+ ions. An increase in the Eu ion concentration led to a red-shift in the Eu2+ fluorescence, which was attributed to the nephelauxetic effect. Therefore, the luminescence color of these glass samples could be manipulated by adjusting the doping concentrations of Ba2+, F-, and Eu2+.

Abstract:An investigation into the optical and mechanical properties of a novel borate glasses with the chemical composition of 70 B 2 O 3 -10 Li 2 O-10ZnO-5Bi 2 O 3 -5CaO-xEu 2 O 3 was conducted. The glassy specimens of Eu 3+ -doped borate were prepared by the melting-quenching technique. An enhanced density from 3.0860 to 3.2176 g cm −3 and reduced molar volume from 29.27819 to 29.17447 (cm 3 mol −1 ) are the outcome of increasing the concentration of Eu 3+ in glasses. Plotting the extinction coefficient, dielectric constant (ε 1 , ε 2 ), and refractive index (n) against wavelength reveals that they all rise as level of Eu 3+ elements in the glass lattice increases. An increase in Eu 3+ concentration results in a decrease in both the volume (VELF) and surface (SELF) energy loss functions. Also, all elastic-mechanical moduli (such as Young's, Bulk, Shear, and Elongation) increase with increasing the quantity of Eu 3+ ions in the glass lattice. The Young's modulus (Y, GPa) of the glassy specimens was 34.512, 36.089, 36.504, 36.730 and 37.114 GPa for x equal 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1 mol ratio in the glass system, and coded by Eu-0.0, Eu-0.25, Eu-0.5, Eu-0.75 and Eu-1.0, respectively. Growing Eu 2 O 3 levels resulted in an increase in Micro-Hardness from 2.050 to 2.146 GPa. Poisson's ratio values for Eu-0.0, Eu-0.250, Eu-0.5, Eu-0.75 and Eu-1.0 were 0.273, 0.275, 0.277, 0.277 and 0.278, respectively.

Abstract:Tb3+/Eu2+,3+-doped zinc aluminoborosilicate glasses were prepared using a conventional high temperature melt-quenching method. Infrared spectra and physical properties of as-prepared glasses verified that the addition of Tb/Eu causes structural weakness in the glass. Tuning of blue, green, and red emission bands achieves white light for the zinc aluminoborosilicate glasses. The broad blue emission band is attributed to the 5d-4f transition of Eu2+ due to partial reduction of Eu3+ during calcination in ambient atmosphere. The reduction of Eu3+ is related to the formation of Eu Zn • and V Zn '' defects and host alkalinity decreases with the addition of Eu3+. Emission spectra and decay curves confirm energy transfer from Tb3+ to Eu3+ in the zinc aluminoborosilicate glasses, and relative intensities of green and red luminescence can be tuned through concentrations changes of Tb3+ and Eu2+,3+. When the concentrations of Tb3+ and Eu2+,3+ are equal to 6% and 1.2%, respectively, a neutral white light emitting glass is obtained. Furthermore, the white-emitting glass shows very high thermal stability compared to a commercial Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ phosphor. Therefore, luminescence tuning of glasses through changing activator concentrations and energy transfer is expected to achieve high-powered white LEDs.

Abstract:In this study, we present our findings on the spin coating deposition of Zinc-Oxide (ZnO) nanowire arrays and Europium doped ZnO (Eu3+: ZnO) nanostructure thin films. These arrays were grown on soda lime (silica) coated glass substrate. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of the structural and optical properties of the as-synthesized nanostructures. Our characterization techniques included X-ray diffraction, FESEM, Raman spectroscopy, and photoluminescence. The XRD results indicate the incorporation of Europium (Eu3+) ions into the crystalline lattice, possibly substituting Zn2+ ions. The incorporation of Europium (Eu3+) doping resulted in decreased crystalline size determined by Scherrer's equation, decreasing from 48.0 nm to 28 nm demonstrates a decrease in defects within the films. We have thoroughly examined the optical characteristics of both Europium-doped and pure ZnO thin films through a systematic study. The optical properties were assessed by analyzing the absorption spectra within the wavelength range of 200 to 2000 nm. The film exhibits an impressive 80% transparency, particularly noteworthy for window layer application. The incorporation of Eu3+ into host matrix also led to a reduction in the optical bandgap Raman Shift analysis further substantiated the alterations in the optical properties of the films. Upon the inclusion of Eu3+a distinct 5D0–7F2 transition originating from the Eu3+ ions, occurring at approximately 612 nm was detected. The refractive index(n), extinction coefficient (k) and all other associated parameters were found to be impacted by the addition of Europium (Eu3+) to ZnO thin films. The refractive index dispersion relation has been explored using a single oscillator model. Furthermore, the non-linear optical susceptibility (χ) and non-linear refractive index were considered using semi-empirical relationships based on the linear optical parameters. The Europium (Eu3+) doping in ZnO leads to an increase in the χ3 value, elevating it from 1.26*10-11 to 1.34 *10-11 e.s.u. These findings indicate the potential for Eu-doped ZnO nanostructures to serve as a promising platform for the development of efficient multispectral light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and optical devices.

Abstract:The paper presents a simple, reproducible, controllable, and direct wet chemical synthesis method for Zn1−xEuxO nanoparticles. The full understanding of decomposition mechanism of the as-obtained oxalate precipitate was achieved based on the thermal analysis correlated with the evolved gas analysis and FTIR spectroscopy. The structure, morphology, and optical luminescent properties of the Zn1−xEuxO nanoparticles have been investigated by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, HRTEM, SAED, XPS, and PL. The XRD studies reveal the formation of a hexagonal wurtzite-type structure. The presence of Eu2O3 cubic structure can be observed up to 0.5 mol% Eu, suggesting that the solubility of the divalent or trivalent Eu into the ZnO lattice is limited. The formation of Eu2O3 secondary phase at higher Eu concentration is sustained by Raman spectroscopy and XPS, as well. The TEM investigations of the Eu-doped ZnO samples illustrate the presence of aggregates with different shapes and dimensions formed by agglomerated spherical and polyhedral nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 20 to 120 nm. The effect of europium concentration on the structural and morphological characteristics, as well as on the luminescent properties was studied with special emphasis on the europium chemical states—Eu2+ and Eu3+. The PL measurements sustain the presence of both divalent and trivalent europium ions into the ZnO host lattice and, at the same time, an increase of its defects density induced by the dopant presence.
