Abstract:The growing demands for rechargeable energy storage systems have spurred researches into alternative electrochemical systems beyond lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) with aqueous electrolyte have emerged as promising candidates due to low cost and high safety. Layered vanadium oxides have open crystal structures and substantial specific capacity, making them ideal cathode materials for ZIBs. However, their structural stability during insertion/extraction of Zn 2+ ions is relatively poor. To address this issue, we employ a dual-metal-ion interlayer confinement strategy and introduce heterovalent K + and Ca 2+ as mixed pillar species into V 2 O 5 interlayers. The optimized K 0.36 Ca 0.05 V 2 O 5 (KCVO) cathode exhibits remarkable cyclic stability and rate performances with a high discharge capacity of ∼392 mA h g −1 at 100 mA g −1 and high energy density of 270.45 W h kg −1 . Its Zn-storage mechanism involves in the co-intercalation of Zn 2+ and H + at 4-coordinated sites. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the additional introduction of Ca 2+ effectively reduces the intercalation energy of protons, ensuring higher capacity and satisfactory rate performance. Overall, this study demonstrates the efficacy of dual-metal-ion interlayer confinement as an innovative strategy for enhancing the performance of layered cathode in ZIBs, providing valuable insights into the modification of layered cathodes.
