Abstract:For free-space optical communication or ground-based optical astronomy, ample data of optical turbulence strength (C n2) are imperative but typically scarce. Turbulence conditions are strongly site dependent, so their accurate quantification requires in situ measurements or numerical weather simulations. If C n2 is not measured directly (e.g., with a scintillometer), C n2 parameterizations must be utilized to estimate it from meteorological observations or model output. Even though various parameterizations exist in the literature, their relative performance is unknown. We fill this knowledge gap by performing a systematic three-way comparison of a flux-, gradient-, and variance-based parameterization. Each parameterization is applied to both observed and simulated meteorological variables, and the resulting C n2 estimates are compared against observed C n2 from two scintillometers. The variance-based parameterization yields the overall best performance, and unlike other approaches, its application is not limited to the lowest part of the atmospheric boundary layer (i.e. the surface layer). We also show that C n2 estimated from the output of the Weather Research and Forecasting model aligns well with observations, highlighting the value of mesoscale models for optical turbulence modeling.

Abstract:This study investigates the performance of forecasting the surface-layer optical turbulence (Cn2) using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The forecasts are compared with the measurements of two instruments, a large aperture scintillometer and a micro-thermometer. The short- and medium-range WRF-predicted Cn2 vary little under strong turbulence conditions (generally during daytime when strong wind speed and unstable atmosphere occur inside the surface layer), but are relatively divergent for weak turbulence. The predicted Cn2 agree well with the trends of measurements among different forecast times (in most cases the correlation coefficients exceed 0.7), but the short-range forecasting shows slightly better performance than the medium-range forecasting.

Abstract:The major limitation of free-space laser communications' performances is due to atmospheric turbulence. Free-space optical channels are characterized by a set of different parameters such as the scintillation index, the Rytov variance, the Fried parameter etc. These parameters stem from the particular atmospheric turbulence model chosen. These latter produce random temperature variations of the air which in turn induce random fluctuations of its refractive index. In order to design reliable ground-to-satellite optical communications links, vertical profiles modelings of the strength of refractive turbulence, i.e. the so-called C2n structure parameter are needed. Several of these models yet exist and depend on several factors and approximations (average profile, site dependent profile, night or daytime etc.). In the framework of this thesis, a study shall identify the statu-quo of atmospheric turbulence modelling (structure parameter, inner and outer scale profiles) options. The models shall be tested and assessed with respect to realism, applicability, advantages and drawbacks by calculation of particular channel parameters. The most promising one shall be identified and further developed as possible. 1. Literature research on profile modelling of structure parameter, inner and outer scale (the Hufnagel-Valley model is the most common one. However, quite often not very suitable). The models might be given in closed form, generic or numerically given for a particular ground station site. 2. Comparison of selected models with respect to applicability, realism, accuracy, needed input parameters (overview table / technical note). 3. Calculation of LEO-Ground channel parameters for selected models and comparison and discussion of results. -Rytov variance, scintillation index, intensity correlation width, Fried parameter etc. -Consideration of weak/moderate/strong fluctuation regime 4. Selection of most useful model. This model might be further developed if possible/necessary. 5. Comparison of results with actual measurements from ground station site Oberpfaffenhofen (optional, depends on work progress). Finally the expected outcome of this thesis is the following: -Comprehensive overview on modelling option of Cn2, inner and outer scale. -Demonstration of the effect of different models on the channel parameters (Rytov variance, scintillation index, intensity correlation width, Fried parameter). -Identification of the optimal model of Cn2, inner and outer scale for the LEO-ground link.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The vertical profile of $C_n^2$ is the main factor for accurate astronomical observation and laser communication, however, hardware-based instruments and associated data are not widely available due to logistical and financial issues. In this article, we developed an indirect method, a hybrid network structure which is a combination of the backpropagation neural network and the simulated annealing algorithm, to fit the vertical profile of $C_n^2$. Radiosonde measurements from a field campaign over the Tibetan Plateau at Dachaidan (37.7○N, 95.3○E, 3180 m ASL) were performed in 2020 August to estimate the accuracy of our model, during which a balloon-borne portable turbulence meteorological radiosonde was used to measure the atmospheric optical profiles. Besides, the integrated astronomical parameters (the coherence length r0, seeing ε0, isoplanatic angle θ0, and the wavefront coherence time τ0), derived from $C_n^2$ and wind-speed vertical profiles, are investigated for astronomical applications using the proposed model. In addition, quantitative evaluations such as the correlation coefficient, the root mean squared error, and the systematic bias are used to quantify the performance of our model. More interesting, this model is found to outperform a widely used external scale model for the prevalent atmospheric conditions and shows better correlation and reliable estimates.

Abstract:An objective method is developed to monitor the stability of spaceborne instruments, aimed at distinguishing climate trend from instrument drift in satellite-based climate observation records. This method is based on four-years of Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) broadband observations of deep convective cloud systems with cloud-top temperature lower than 205 K and with large optical depths. The implementation of this method to the CERES instrument stability analysis reveals that the monthly albedo distributions are practically the same for deep convective clouds with CERES measurements acquired from both the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission and Terra satellite platforms, indicating that CERES instruments are well calibrated and stable during both missions. Furthermore, with a nonlinear regression neural network narrowband-broadband conversion, this instrument-stability monitoring method can also be applied to narrowband instruments such as the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Visible Infrared Scanner (VIRS). The results show that the drifts associated with both VIRS and MODIS instruments are less than 1% during a four-year period. Since the CERES albedo measurements are highly accurate, the absorptance of these opaque clouds can be reliably estimated. The absorptions of these clouds from observations are around 25%, whereas the absorptions from theory can be as low as 18%, depending on ice cloud microphysics.
Atmospheric turbulence forecasting with a General Circulation Model for Cerro Paranal

Abstract:In addition to astro-meteorological parameters, such as seeing, coherence time and isoplanatic angle, the vertical profile of the Earth's atmospheric turbulence strength and velocity is important for instrument design, performance validation and monitoring, and observation scheduling and management. Here we compare these astro-meteorological parameters as well as the vertical profile itself from a forecast model based on a General Circulation Model from the European Centre for Median range Weather Forecasts and the stereo-SCIDAR, a high-sensitivity turbulence profiling instrument in regular operation at Paranal, Chile. The model is fast to process as no spatial nesting or data manipulation is performed. This speed enables the model to be reactive based on the most up to date forecasts. We find that the model is statistically consistent with measurements from stereo-SCIDAR. The correlation of the median turbulence profile from the model and the measurement is 0.98. We also find that the distributions of astro-meteorological parameters are consistent. We compare contemporaneous measurements and show that the free atmosphere seeing, isoplanatic angle and coherence time have correlation values of 0.64, 0.40 and 0.63 respectively. We show and compare the profile sequences from a large number of trial nights. We see that the model is able to forecast the evolution of dominating features. In addition to smart scheduling, ensuring that the most sensitive astronomical observations are scheduled for the optimum time, this model could enable remote site characterisation using a large archive of weather forecasts and could be used to optimise the performance of wide-field AO system.

Abstract:ABSTRACT In this study, we make use of a meso-scale numerical model to obtain the parameters of atmospheric optical turbulence at the Ali observatory above the Tibetan Plateau. These parameters are essential for ground-based optical observations and some adaptive optics techniques. We present the characterization of the vertical distributions of atmospheric optical turbulence Cn2 and the main integral parameters, such as coherence time τ0, isoplanatic angle θ0 and seeing ε0 derived from Cn2. Meanwhile, the measurement of Cn2 obtained with a radiosonde instrument is used to quantify the model performance on reconstructing the optical turbulence above the site. This shows a high level of agreement and provides a reliable tool for astronomical site testing. The results presented in this paper demonstrate the good behaviour of the atmospheric optical turbulence condition at Ali, particularly during the summer half of the year. We find yearly median values of seeing ε0 = 0.47 arcsec, isoplanatic angle θ0 = 4.35 arcsec and atmospheric coherence time τ0 = 5.52 ms in 2016, and we also provide independent confirmation of the potential of the Ali site in adaptive optics. Moreover, it has been proven that meso-scale models can provide reliable estimations of atmospheric optical turbulence conditions above an astronomical site on the Tibetan Plateau.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Atmospheric turbulence reduces the image quality and resolution of ground-based optical telescopes. Future large solar telescopes (e.g. the CGST, China Giant Solar Telescope) should be equipped with adaptive optics (AO) systems. The design of AO systems is associated with atmospheric optical turbulence parameters, especially the profile of the refractive index structure $C_{n}^{2}(h)$. With the solar differential image motion monitor (S-DIMM) and the profiler of the moon limb (PML), a simplified version of a PML, termed a profiler of the differential solar limb (PDSL), was built in order to determine the daytime $C_{n}^{2}(h)$ and other atmospheric turbulence parameters. A PDSL with differential solar limb fluctuations was used to determine the turbulence profiling, and the extended solar limb extends the range of separation angles for a higher resolution of the height profile. The PDSL structure and its performance are described. In addition, numerical simulations were conducted to verify the effectiveness of the method. As revealed from the simulation results, the layered integral coefficient matrix is capable of solving the discretization error and enhancing the inversion accuracy of the turbulence contour. The first test results at Mt Wumingshan (a candidate site for the CGST) are presented.

Abstract:ABSTRACT A six-night optical turbulence monitoring campaign has been carried at Cerro Paranal observatory in 2023 February and March to facilitate the development and characterization of two novel atmospheric site monitoring instruments – the ring-image next-generation scintillation sensor (RINGSS) and 24-h Shack Hartmann image motion monitor (24hSHIMM) in the context of providing optical turbulence monitoring support for upcoming 20–40 m telescopes. Alongside these two instruments, the well-characterized Stereo-SCIDAR and 2016-MASS-DIMM were operated throughout the campaign to provide data for comparison. All instruments obtain estimates of optical turbulence profiles through statistical analysis of intensity and wavefront angle-of-arrival fluctuations from observations of stars. Contemporaneous measurements of the integrated turbulence parameters are compared and the ratios, bias, unbiased root mean square error, and correlation of results from each instrument assessed. Strong agreement was observed in measurements of seeing, free atmosphere seeing, and coherence time. Less correlation is seen for isoplanatic angle, although the median values agree well. Median turbulence parameters are further compared against long-term monitoring data from Paranal instruments. Profiles from the three small-telescope instruments are compared with the 100-layer profile from the stereo-SCIDAR. It is found that the RINGSS and SHIMM offer improved accuracy in characterization of the vertical optical turbulence profile over the MASS-DIMM. Finally, the first results of continuous optical turbulence monitoring at Paranal are presented which show a strong diurnal variation and predictable trend in the seeing. A value of 2.65 arcsec is found for the median daytime seeing.

Abstract:The United States Naval Academy long-term scintillation measurement campaign was a multi-year effort to characterize optical turbulence in the near-maritime atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). At its core, the field experiment consists of in situ measurements of bulk atmospheric and oceanographic parameters, as well as path-averaged measurements of the refractive index structure parameter, C n2, collected using a large-aperture scintillometer. The field experiment ran from January 1st, 2020, through September 26th, 2023, representing the most comprehensive collection of optical turbulence measurements in the near-maritime ABL to date. Long-term measurements enable researchers to evaluate existing theory and develop new models applicable to this environment. The present study characterizes some of the physical relationships that affect optical turbulence. This characterization focuses on the relationship between local optical turbulence and select atmospheric and oceanographic parameters. The impact of temperature gradients on the extent of optical turbulence was analyzed, along with its interactions with relative humidity and wind speed. The diurnal and seasonal variations in measured C n2 were examined, with comparisons drawn against other environments. Abstract:Controlled turbulence simulators in the laboratory have been extensively employed to investigate turbulence effects on light propagation in the atmosphere, driven by some advanced optical engineering such as remote sensing, energy-delivery systems, and free-space optical communication systems. Many studies have achieved rich results on the optical turbulence intensity, scintillation index, and power spectral density characteristics of the light propagation path in the center of a turbulence simulator, but a comprehensive analysis of the optical turbulence characteristics for different spatial locations is still lacking. We simulate turbulence with air as the medium in a classical convective Rayleigh–Bénard turbulence simulator through high-resolution computational fluid dynamics methods, the three-dimensional refractive index distribution is obtained, and the optical properties are analyzed comprehensively. It is found that the hot and cold plumes and the large-scale circulation strongly influence the inhomogeneity of Cn2 in the turbulence tank, making it weak in the middle and strong near the boundary. The refractive index power spectral density at different heights is centrally symmetric, with the slope gradually deviating from the −5/3 scaling power with increasing distance from the central region. Under the log-log plot, the variation of the refractive index variance with height exhibits a three-segmented feature, showing in order: a stable region, a logarithmic profile, and a power-law profile, in the region close to the boundary. These results will contribute to the construction of a suitable turbulence simulator for optical engineering applications.

Abstract:Abstract. The refractive index structure constant (Cn2) is a key parameter in describing the influence of turbulence on laser transmission in the atmosphere. A new method for continuous Cn2 profiling with both high temporal and spatial resolution is proposed and demonstrated. Under the assumption of the Kolmogorov “2/3 law”, the Cn2 profile can be calculated by using the wind field and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate (TKEDR) measured by coherent Doppler wind lidar (CDWL) and other meteorological parameters derived from microwave radiometer (MWR). In the horizontal experiment, a comparison between the results from our new method and measurements made by a large aperture scintillometer (LAS) is conducted. Except for the period of stratification stabilizing, the correlation coefficient between them in the six-day observation is 0.8389, the mean error and standard deviation is 1.09 × 10−15 m−2/3 and 2.14 × 10−15 m−2/3, respectively. In the vertical direction, the continuous observation results of Cn2 and other turbulence parameter profiles in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) are retrieved. More details of the atmospheric turbulence can be found in the ABL owe to the high temporal and spatial resolution of MWR and CDWL (spatial resolution of 26 m, temporal resolution of 147 s).

Abstract:Turbulence is a complex and chaotic state of fluid motion. Atmospheric turbulence within the Earth’s atmosphere poses fundamental challenges for applications such as remote sensing, free-space optical communications and astronomical observation due to its rapid evolution across temporal and spatial scales. Conventional methods for studying atmospheric turbulence face hurdles in capturing the wide-field distribution of turbulence due to its transparency and anisoplanatism. Here we develop a light-field-based plug-and-play wide-field wavefront sensor (WWS), facilitating the direct observation of atmospheric turbulence over 1,100 arcsec at 30 Hz. The experimental measurements agreed with the von Kármán turbulence model, further verified using a differential image motion monitor. Attached to an 80 cm telescope, our WWS enables clear turbulence profiling of three layers below an altitude of 750 m and high-resolution aberration-corrected imaging without additional deformable mirrors. The WWS also enables prediction of the evolution of turbulence dynamics within 33 ms using a convolutional recurrent neural network with wide-field measurements, leading to more accurate pre-compensation of turbulence-induced errors during free-space optical communication. Wide-field sensing of dynamic turbulence wavefronts provides new opportunities for studying the evolution of turbulence in the broad field of atmospheric optics.
Towards operational optical turbulence forecast systems at different scales

Abstract:The forecast on a time scale of 1 or 2 hours is crucial for all kind of new generation facilities (ELTs) instrumentation supported by the adaptive optics that will be mainly operated in Service Mode. In a recent study (Masciadri et al. 2020) we have showed that we can forecast the seeing and atmospheric parameters at such short time scales using an autoregressive method achieving unprecedented model accuracies with a substantial gain with respect to forecasts performed the day before (i.e. on longer time scales) obtained with an atmospheric mesoscale model. Equally we showed a gain with respect to the method by persistence using simply real-time measurements in situ on the same short time scale (1-2 hours). The auto-regressive method makes use of the forecasts done with mesoscale atmospheric models and real-time measurements and since 2019 has been implemented in the operational forecast system ALTA Center supporting LBT observations. In this contribution we apply the same approach to the VLT site extending the method to all the main astroclimatic parameters i.e. the seeing, the wavefront coherence time, the isoplanatic angle and the ground layer fraction. We prove that such a method offers unprecedented forecast accuracies for all the astroclimatic parameters with clear gains with respect to the prediction by persistence. Preliminary calculations indicate also better accuracies than those obtained with the machine learning based approach using in situ measurements. We will apply soon such a method in an operational forecast system that we conceived for the VLT.

OTCliM: generating a near-surface climatology of optical turbulence strength ($C_n^2$) using gradient boosting

Abstract:This study introduces OTCliM (Optical Turbulence Climatology using Machine learning), a novel approach for deriving comprehensive climatologies of atmospheric optical turbulence strength ($C_n^2$) using gradient boosting machines. OTCliM addresses the challenge of efficiently obtaining reliable site-specific $C_n^2$ climatologies, crucial for ground-based astronomy and free-space optical communication. Using gradient boosting machines and global reanalysis data, OTCliM extrapolates one year of measured $C_n^2$ into a multi-year time series. We assess OTCliM's performance using $C_n^2$ data from 17 diverse stations in New York State, evaluating temporal extrapolation capabilities and geographical generalization. Our results demonstrate accurate predictions of four held-out years of $C_n^2$ across various sites, including complex urban environments, outperforming traditional analytical models. Non-urban models also show good geographical generalization compared to urban models, which captured non-general site-specific dependencies. A feature importance analysis confirms the physical consistency of the trained models. It also indicates the potential to uncover new insights into the physical processes governing $C_n^2$ from data. OTCliM's ability to derive reliable $C_n^2$ climatologies from just one year of observations can potentially reduce resources required for future site surveys or enable studies for additional sites with the same resources.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The vertical profiles of wind speed and the optical turbulence are critical to the design and operation of a new generation of highly sophisticated astronomical telescopes and adaptive optics instrumentation. We present the first study of the temporal evolution behaviours and probability distributions of wind speed [V(h) profiles, as well as the 200 hPa pressure level wind speed, V200] and optical turbulence [$C_n^2(h)$ profiles, and the most relevant integrated astronomical parameters derived from $C_n^2(h)$ profiles, i.e. the seeing ε, the isoplanatic angle θAO, the wavefront coherence time τAO, the average velocity of turbulence VAO, and the seeing layer height hAO] above the Dachaidan site of the Tibetan Plateau. The field campaigns of wind speed and optical turbulence were collected using the balloon-borne microthermal measurement system. From the whole field campaigns, the results are remarkable: The median VAO is 21.1 m s−1, the median V200 is 32.5 m s−1, the median hAO is 7566 m, the median ε is 1.04 arcsec (below 1.00 arcsec 52 per cent of the time), the median θAO is 0.74 arcsec, and the median τAO is 1.33 ms; these conditions are comparable to some of the best astronomical observatories in the world. In particular, the linear relationship of average velocity and 200 hPa level wind at this site is VAO = 0.627V200. MOSE: a feasibility study for optical turbulence forecasts with the Meso-Nh mesoscale model to support AO facilities at ESO sites (Paranal and Armazones)

Abstract:We present very encouraging preliminary results obtained in the context of the MOSE project, an on-going study aiming at investigating the feasibility of the forecast of the optical turbulence and meteorological parameters (in the free atmosphere as well as in the boundary and surface layer) at Cerro Paranal (site of the Very Large Telescope - VLT) and Cerro Armazones (site of the European Extremely Large Telescope - E-ELT), both in Chile. The study employs the Meso-Nh atmospheric mesoscale model and aims at supplying a tool for optical turbulence forecasts to support the scheduling of the scientific programs and the use of AO facilities at the VLT and the E-ELT. In this study we take advantage of the huge amount of measurements performed so far at Paranal and Armazones by ESO and the TMT consortium in the context of the site selection for the E-ELT and the TMT to constraint/validate the model. A detailed analysis of the model performances in reproducing the atmospheric parameters (T, V, p, H, ...) near the ground as well as in the free atmosphere, is critical and fundamental because the optical turbulence depends on most of these parameters. This approach permits us to provide an exhaustive and complete analysis of the model performances and to better define the model operational application. This also helps us to identify the sources of discrepancies with optical turbulence measurements (when they appear) and to discriminate between different origins of the problem: model parameterization, initial conditions, ... Preliminary results indicate a great accuracy of the model in reproducing most of the main meteorological parameters in statistical terms as well as in each individual night in the free atmosphere and in proximity of the surface. A Computational Model of Cn2 Profile Inversion for Atmospheric Laser Communication in the Vertical Path

Abstract:In this paper, an atmospheric structure constant Cn2 model is proposed for evaluating the channel turbulence degree of atmospheric laser communication. First, we derive a mathematical model for the correlation between the atmospheric coherence length r0, the isoplanatic angle θ0 and Cn2 using the Hufnagel–Valley (HV) turbulence model. Then, we calculate the seven parameters of the HV model with the actual measured r0 and θ0 data as input quantities, so as to draw the Cn2 profile and the θ0 profile. The experimental results show that the fitted average Cn2 contours and single-day Cn2 contours have superior fitting performance compared with our historical data, and the daily correlation coefficient between the single-day computed θ0 contours and the measured θ0 contours is up to 87%. This result verifies the feasibility of the proposed method. The results validate the feasibility of the proposed method and provide a new technical tool for the inversion of turbulence Cn2 profiles.

Daytime turbulence strength profile measurement at Kodaikanal Observatory

Abstract:The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) is developing a Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) system for the Kodaikanal Tower Telescope (KTT). In this context, we have measured the daytime turbulence strength profile at the Kodaikanal Observatory. The first method based on wavefront sensor (WFS) images, called S-DIMM+ (Solar-Differential Image Motion Monitor+), was used to estimate the higher altitude turbulence up to a height of 5 - 6 km. The second method used balloon-borne temperature sensors to measure the near-Earth turbulence up to 350 m. We also carried out simulations to validate the performance of our system. We report the first-ever daytime turbulence strength profile measurements at the observatory. We have identified the presence of a strong turbulence layer about 3 km above the observatory. The measured near-Earth turbulence matches the trend that is expected from the model for daytime component of turbulence and gives an integrated $r_0$ of about 4 cm at 500 nm. This is consistent with earlier seeing measurements. This shows that a low-cost setup with a small telescope and a simple array of temperature sensors can be used for estimating the turbulence strength profile at the site.
