Abstract:8:2 fluorotelomer carboxylic acid (8:2 FTCA), an important precursor of perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs), is widely detected in environment and biotas. Hydroponic exposures were conducted to investigate the accumulation and metabolism of 8:2 FTCA in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima L.). Endophytic and rhizospheric microorganisms co-existing with the plants were isolated to investigate their contributions to degrade 8:2 FTCA. Wheat and pumpkin roots could take up 8:2 FTCA efficiently with the root concentration factor (RCF) as 5.78 and 8.93, respectively. 8:2 FTCA could be biotransformed to 8:2 fluorotelomer unsaturated carboxylic acid (8:2 FTUCA), 7:3 fluorotelomer carboxylic acid (7:3 FTCA), and seven PFCAs with 2-8 carbon chain length in plant roots and shoots. Cytochromes P450 (CYP450) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activities in plants were significantly increased, while flavin-dependent monooxygenases (FMOs) activities were not changed, suggesting that CYP 450 and GST were involved in the transformation of 8:2 FTCA in plant tissues. Twelve 8:2 FTCA-degrading endophytic (8 strains) and rhizospheric (4 strains) bacterial strains were isolated from root interior, shoot interior and rhizosphere of plants, respectively. These bacteria were identified as Klebsiella sp. based on the morphology and 16S rDNA sequence, and they could biodegrade 8:2 FTCA to intermediates and stable PFCAs.

Abstract:A fungal strain capable of utilizing chlorpyrifos as sole carbon and energy sources was isolated from soil by enrichment cultivation approach. The half-lives of degradation (DT50) for chlorpyrifos at concentrations of 1, 10, and 100 mg l(-1) by the fungal strain DSP in mineral salt medium were measured to be 2.03, 2.93, and 3.49 days, respectively. Two cell-free extracts [E (1:10) and E (1:20)] from the fungal strain DSP in bran-glucose medium were prepared and used to enhance chlorpyrifos degradation on vegetables. Compared with the controls, the DT50 of chlorpyrifos were reduced by 70.3%, 65.6%, 80.6%, 80.6%, and 86.1%, and by 53.8%, 43.2%, 66.0%, 54.3%, and 67.7% on E (1:20) and E (1:10) treated pakchoi, water spinach, Malabar spinach, haricot beans, and pepper, respectively. The 7-day residual values (R (7)) of chlorpyrifos on E (1:10) treated vegetables were all lower than the corresponding maximum residue levels of European Union (EU MRLs), except that the R (7) value on haricot beans was slightly higher than the corresponding EU MRLs. The results indicate that cell-free extracts could rapidly degrade chlorpyrifos residues on vegetables.

Abstract:As emerging alternatives of legacy perfluoroalkyl substances, 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FTS), 6:2 chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonates (6:2 CI-PFESA), and perfluorophosphinates (C6/C6 and C8/C8 PFPiAs) are supposed to be partitioned to soil and highly persistent in the environment. The uptake of novel per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) by plants represents a potential pathway for their transfer in the food chain. In this study, the bioavailability of these four novel PFASs in soil and the bioaccumulation characteristics in greenhouse-grown wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), maize (Zea mays L.), soybean ( Glycine max L. Merrill), and pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima L.) were investigated. The results indicated that these novel PFASs with higher hydrophobicity were more easily sequestrated in soil, and the fractions extracted by methanol could well describe their bioavailability, which could be stimulated by low-molecular-weight organic acids at rhizospheric concentrations. A negative relationship was found between root soil concentration factors (RSCFs) and hydrophobicity (log k(ow)) of the target PFASs. This correlation was also found in the translocation factors (TF) from roots to shoots. Furthermore, the uptake and transfer of the target PFASs were regulated by the protein contents in plant roots and shoots.
Response of Cucumber (cucumis Sativus) to Perfluorooctanoic Acid in Photosynthesis and Metabolomics.

Abstract:A mechanistic understanding of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) toxicity to plants is essential for future risk assessment of PFOA in agricultural soil. In this study, soil-grown cucumber (Cucumis sativus) was exposed to 0, 0.2, and 5 mg/kg of PFOA for 60 days. At harvest, contaminant accumulation, cucumber biomass, photosynthesis profiles and metabolites were measured. Results showed that PFOA depressed cucumber biomass and accumulated highest in leaves. Photosynthesis analysis revealed that PFOA at both doses reduced the chlorophyll contents and net photosynthesis rate of cucumber leaves. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-based non-targeted metabolomics revealed that PFOA induced metabolic reprogramming in cucumber leaves, including up-regulation of phenols (at 0.2 and 5 mg/kg) and down-regulation of amino acids (at 5 mg/kg), indicating disrupted nitrogen and carbon metabolism. Results revealed how PFOA represses plant growth by down-regulating photosynthetic pigments and disturbing the metabolism of carbohydroxides, phenols and amino acids. These findings provide valuable information for understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in plant responses to PFOA-induced stress.
Biotransformation of 6:2/4:2 fluorotelomer alcohols by Dietzia aurantiaca J3: Enzymes and proteomics

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are recalcitrant synthetic organohalides known to negatively impact human health. Short-chain fluorotelomer alcohols are considered the precursor of various perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) in the environment. Their ongoing production and widespread detection motivate investigations of their biological transformation. Dietzia aurantiaca strain J3 was isolated from PFAS-contaminated landfill leachate using 6:2 fluorotelomer sulphonate (6:2 FTS) as a sulphur source. Resting cell experiments were used to test if strain J3 could transform fluorotelomer alcohols (6:2 and 4:2 FTOH). Strain J3 transformed fluorotelomer alcohols into PFCAs, polyfluorocarboxylic acids and transient intermediates. Over 6 days, 80 % and 58 % of 6:2 FTOH (0.1 mM) and 4:2 FTOH (0.12 mM) were degraded with 6.4 % and 14 % fluoride recovery respectively. Fluorotelomer unsaturated carboxylic acid (6:2 FTUCA) was the most abundant metabolite, accounting for 21 to 30 mol% of 6:2 FTOH (0.015 mM) applied on day zero. Glutathione (GSH) conjugates of 6:2/4:2 FTOH and 5:3 FTCA adducts were also structurally identified. Proteomics studies conducted to identify enzymes in the biotransformation pathway have revealed the role of various enzymes involved in β oxidation. This is the first report of 6:2/4:2 FTOH glutathione conjugates and 5:3 FTCA adducts in prokaryotes, and the first study to explore the biotransformation of 4:2 FTOH by pure bacterial strain.
Insights into Uptake, Translocation, and Transformation Mechanisms of Perfluorophosphinates and Perfluorophosphonates in Wheat (triticum Aestivum L.)

Abstract:As emerging alternatives of legacy perfluoroalkyl substances, perfluorophosphinates (PFPiAs) and perfluorophosphonates (PFPAs) are widely applied in industrial and agricultural fields and are supposed to be large partitioned to soil and highly persistent. It is of particular interest to understand their transfer from roots to shoots and transformation in plants, such as wheat. The results of hydroponic experiments indicated that C6/C6 PFPiA, C8/C8 PFPiA, perfluorooctanophosphonic acid (PFOPA), and perfluorohexaphosphonic acid (PFHxPA) were quickly adsorbed on the epidermis of wheat root (Triticum aestivum L.), which was driven by their hydrophobicity. A small fraction of the accumulated PFPiAs and PFPAs in the wheat root was subjected to absorption via an active process dependent on H+-ATPase. PFHxPA, which has the smallest molecular weight and medium hydrophilicity (log K-ow < 4), displayed the strongest absorption efficiency via the water and anion channels and had the highest translocation potential from roots to shoots in wheat. C6/C6 and C8/C8 PFPiAs experienced phase I metabolism in wheat, although at a low rate, to form more persistent PFHxPA and PFOPA, respectively, as well as 1H-perfluorohexane (1H-PFHx) and 1H-perfluorooctane (1H-PFO), which were regulated by cytochrome P450 in wheat root. As a result, exposure to PFPiAs in roots ultimately caused the accumulation of more persistent PFPAs in the above-ground parts of plants, raising concerns on their potential risks on human health.
Carboxylesterase-involved metabolism of di-n-butyl phthalate in pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata) seedlings

Abstract:Uptake and accumulation by plants is a significant pathway in the migration and transformation of phthalate esters (PAEs) in the environment. However, limited information is available on the mechanisms of PAE metabolism in plants. Here, we investigated the metabolism of di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP), one of the most frequently detected PAEs, in pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata) seedlings via a series of hydroponic experiments with an initial concentration of 10 mg L-1. DnBP hydrolysis occurred primarily in the root, and two of its metabolites, mono-n-butyl phthalate (MnBP) and phthalic acid (PA), were detected in all plant tissues. The MnBP concentration was an order of magnitude higher than that of PA in shoots, which indicated MnBP was more readily transported to the shoot than was PA because of the former's dual hydrophilic and lipophilic characteristics. More than 80% of MnBP and PA were located in the cell water-soluble component except that 96% of MnBP was distributed into the two solid cellular fractions (i.e., cell wall and organelles) at 96 h. A 13-20% and 29-54% increase of carboxylesterase (CXE) activity shown in time-dependent and concentration-dependent experiments, respectively, indicated the involvement of CXEs in plant metabolism of DnBP. The level of CXE activity in root subcellular fractions was in the order: the cell water-soluble component (88-94%) >> cell wall (3-7%) > cell organelles (3-4%), suggesting that the cell water-soluble component is the dominant locus of CXE activity and also the domain of CXE-catalyzed hydrolysis of DnBP. The addition of triphenyl phosphate, a CXE inhibitor, led to 43-56% inhibition of CXE activity and 16-25% increase of DnBP content, which demonstrated the involvement of CXEs in plant metabolism of DnBP. This study contributes to our understanding of enzymitic mechanisms of PAE transformation in plants.
Perfluorobutanoic acid triggers metabolic and transcriptional reprogramming in wheat seedlings

Abstract:The environmental risks of fluorinated alternatives are of great concern with the phasing out of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate. Here, multi-omics (i.e., metabolomics and transcriptomics) coupled with physiological and biochemical analyses were employed to investigate the stress responses of wheat seedings ( Triticum aestivum L.) to perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), one of the short-chain per - and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and PFOA alternatives, at environmentally relevant concentrations (0.1–100 ng/g). After 28 days of soil exposure, PFBA boosted the generation of OH and O 2 − in wheat seedlings, resulting in lipid peroxidation, protein perturbation and impaired photosynthesis. Non-enzymatic antioxidant defense systems (e.g., glutathione, phenolics, and vitamin C) and enzymatic antioxidant copper/zinc superoxide dismutase were strikingly activated ( p < 0.05). PFBA-triggered oxidative stress induced metabolic and transcriptional reprogramming, including carbon and nitrogen metabolisms, lipid metabolisms, immune responses, signal transduction processes, and antioxidant defense-related pathways. Down-regulation of genes related to plant-pathogen interaction suggested suppression of the immune-response, offering a novel understanding on the production of reactive oxygen species in plants under the exposure to PFAS. The identified MAPK signaling pathway illuminated a novel signal transduction mechanism in plant cells in response to PFAS. These findings provide comprehensive understandings on the phytotoxicity of PFBA to wheat seedlings and new insights into the impacts of PFAS on plants.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to conduct transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic analysis to provide a comprehensive view of plant response to tetracycline stress. Pumpkin seeds were cultured for 7 days without or with tetracycline at 10 mg/L. Pumpkin roots showed excessive growth inhibition, but not yet strong growth restraining in cotyledons. Tetracycline affected the abundance of metabolites related to flavonoid biosynthesis and amino acid metabolism. Main changes of metabolites in flavonoid biosynthesis were consistent with mRNA changes. Amino acid changes are mainly mediated by proteins or mRNAs. To be specific, tetracycline treatment increased the levels of rutin, caffeate, cinnamaldehyde, 4-hydroxycinnamic acid, ferulic acid, naringenin, apigenin, luteolin, (-)-epigallocatechin, astragalin, L-serine, and glutathione and the transcript levels related to these compounds; and decreased the levels of indole pyruvate, indole acetaldehyde, L-arginine, S-adenosylhomocysteine, L-glutamine, and gamma-glutamylcysteine and the transcript levels related to these compounds. Tetracycline treatment also increased the levels of oxoglutaric acid, L-glutamic acid, gamma-aminobutyric acid, and gamma-glutamylalanine and enzymes involved in their production; and decreased the levels of L-isoleucine, L-valine, and L-leucine and enzymes involved in their production. We elucidated several biological processes (e.g. phenylpropanoid/flavonoid biosynthesis pathways, amino acid metabolic pathways) that were altered by tetracycline, and provided a multi-omic perspective on the mechanisms underlying the response to tetracycline stress in pumpkin roots. We provide a useful reference for the development of environmental quality management methods.
Accumulation of six PFAS compounds by woody and herbaceous plants: potential for phytoextraction

Abstract:Per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) consist of a large group of compounds used to make products more resistant to stains, grease, and water and for fire suppression. They have been widely detected in the environment and exposure has been linked to adverse human health effects. Phytoremediation could be used to remediate PFAS-impacted sites, but there is little information on herbaceous and woody plant species uptake of PFAS compounds from soil. A greenhouse study evaluated the potential for eight herbaceous and seven woody plant species to absorb PFAS compounds. Six PFAS compounds: PFPeA, PFHxA, PFOA, PFBS, PFHxS, and PFOS were added weekly to irrigation water, and the plants grown for up to 14 weeks after an initial establishment period. Significant accumulation of all PFAS compounds occurred in at least one plant species. Mass recovery in above-ground tissue by the best performing plant ranged from a low of 3.8% for PFOS by Festuca rubra to a high of 42% for PFPeA by Schedonorus arundinaceus. Hyperaccumulation, defined as tissue/soil concentrations >10/1, was observed for all six PFAS compounds in at least one plant species. These results demonstrate the potential use of phytoremediation as a tool for remediating PFAS-contaminated sites.

Aerobic Microbial Transformation of Fluorinated Liquid Crystal Monomer: New Pathways and Mechanism

Abstract:Fluorinated liquid crystal monomers (FLCMs) have been suggested as emerging contaminants, raising global concern due to their frequent occurrence, potential toxic effects, and endurance capacity in the environment. However, the environmental fate of the FLCMs remains unknown. To fill this knowledge gap, we investigated the aerobic microbial transformation mechanisms of an important FLCM, 4-[difluoro(3,4,5-trifluorophenoxy)methyl]-3, 5-difluoro-4'-propylbiphenyl (DTMDPB), using an enrichment culture termed as BG1. Our findings revealed that 67.5 ± 2.1% of the initially added DTMDPB was transformed in 10 days under optimal conditions. A total of 14 microbial transformation products obtained due to a series of reactions (e.g., reductive defluorination, ether bond cleavage, demethylation, oxidative hydroxylation and aromatic ring opening, sulfonation, glucuronidation, O-methylation, and thiolation) were identified. Consortium BG1 harbored essential genes that could transform DTMDPB, such as dehalogenation-related genes [e.g., glutathione S-transferase gene (GST), 2-haloacid dehalogenase gene (2-HAD), nrdB, nuoC, and nuoD]; hydroxylating-related genes hcaC, ubiH, and COQ7; aromatic ring opening-related genes ligB and catE; and methyltransferase genes ubiE and ubiG. Two DTMDPB-degrading strains were isolated, which are affiliated with the genus Sphingopyxis and Agromyces. This study provides a novel insight into the microbial transformation of FLCMs. The findings of this study have important implications for the development of bioremediation strategies aimed at addressing sites contaminated with FLCMs.
Transcriptome Profiling Combined With Activities of Antioxidant and Soil Enzymes Reveals an Ability of Pseudomonas sp. CFA to Mitigate p-Hydroxybenzoic and Ferulic Acid Stresses in Cucumber

Abstract:Continuous-cropping leads to obstacles in crop productivity by the accumulation of p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHBA) and ferulic acid (FA). In this study, a strain CFA of Pseudomonas was shown to have a higher PHBA- and FA-degrading ability in media and soil and the mechanisms underlying this were explored. Optimal conditions for PHBA and FA degradation by CFA were 0.2 g/l of PHBA and FA, 37°C, and pH 6.56. Using transcriptome analysis, complete pathways that converted PHBA and FA to acetyl coenzyme A were proposed in CFA. When CFA was provided with PHBA and FA, we observed upregulation of genes in the pathways and detected intermediate metabolites including vanillin, vanillic acid, and protocatechuic acid. Moreover, 4-hydroxybenzoate 3-monooxygenase and vanillate O-demethylase were rate-limiting enzymes by gene overexpression. Knockouts of small non-coding RNA (sRNA) genes, including sRNA 11, sRNA 14, sRNA 20, and sRNA 60, improved the degradation of PHBA and FA. When applied to cucumber-planted soil supplemented with PHBA and FA, CFA decreased PHBA and FA in soil. Furthermore, a reduction of superoxide radical, hydrogen peroxide, and malondialdehyde in cucumber was observed by activating superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase, dehydroascorbate reductase, and monodehydroascorbate reductase in seedlings, increasing the reduced glutathione and ascorbate in leaves, and inducing catalase, urease, and phosphatase in the rhizosphere. CFA has potential to mitigate PHBA and FA stresses in cucumber and alleviate continuous-cropping obstacles.

Abstract:6:2 Fluorotelomer alcohol (FTOH), one of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), is widely used as a raw material in synthesizing surfactants and fluorinated polymers. However, little is known about the role of root exudates on 6:2 FTOH biodegradation in the rhizosphere. This study examined the effects of root exudates produced from dicot ( Arabidopsis thaliana ) and monocot ( Brachypodium distachyon ) grown under different nutrient conditions (nutrient-rich, sulfur-free, and potassium-free) on 6:2 FTOH biotransformation with or without bioaugmentating agent Rhodococcus jostii RHA1. All the exudates enhanced defluorination of 6:2 FTOH by glucose-grown RHA1. Amendment of dicot or monocot root exudates, regardless of the plant growth conditions, also enhanced 6:2 FTOH biotransformation in soil microcosms. Interestingly, high levels of humic-like substances in the root exudates are linked to high extents of 6:2 FTOH defluorination. Bioaugmenting strain RHA1 along with root exudates facilitated 6:2 FTOH transformation with a production of more diverse metabolites. Microbial community analysis revealed that Rhodococcus was predominant in all strain RHA1 spiked treatments. Different root exudates changed the soil microbiome dynamics. This study provided new insight into 6:2 FTOH biotransformation with different root exudates, suggesting that root exudates amendment and bioaugmentation are promising approaches to promote rhizoremediation for PFAS-contaminated soil.

Abstract:The glycosylation process was investigated for the common brominated flame retardant tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in hydroponic exposure systems with pumpkin seedlings. Two typical glycosylation metabolites of TBBPA formed in pumpkin seedlings, TBBPA mono-β-d-glucopyranoside (TBBPA MG) and TBBPA di-β-d-glucopyranoside (TBBPA DG), increasing their mass early in the exposure (reaching maximum masses of 608 ± 53 and 3806 ± 1570 pmol at 12 h, respectively) and then falling throughout exposure. These two metabolites were released from roots to rhizosphere solutions, where they also exhibited initial increases followed by decreasing trends (reaching maximum masses of 595 ± 272 pmol at 3 h and 77.1 ± 36.0 pmol at 6 h, respectively). However, a (pseudo)zero-order deglycosylation of TBBPA MG and TBBPA DG (during the first 1.5 h) back to TBBPA was unexpectedly detected in the hydroponic solutions containing pumpkin exudates and microorganisms. The function of microorganisms in the solutions was further investigated, revealing that the microorganisms were main contributors to deglycosylation. Plant detoxification through glycosylation and excretion, followed by deglycosylation of metabolites back to the toxic parent compound (TBBPA) in hydroponic solutions, provides new insight into the uptake, transformation, and environmental fate of TBBPA and its glycosylated metabolites in plant/microbial systems.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are anthropogenic compounds threatening water quality and food safety worldwide. Phytoremediation is a nature-based, cost-effective, and scalable solution with high potential for treating PFAS-contaminated sites. However, there is a large knowledge gap regarding choice of plant species and methods to enhance performance. This study assessed the PFAS phytoextraction potential of sunflower (Helianthus annuus), mustard (Brassica juncea), and industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa) in a greenhouse experiment, using inorganic fertilizer and a microbial mixture as supplements. PFAS concentrations were measured using UPLC-MS/MS, and bioconcentration factors for different plant tissues and removal efficiency were determined. Perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acid (PFCA) accumulation was 0.4-360 times higher than that of perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acid (PFSA) homologues of similar perfluorocarbon chain length. Inorganic fertilizer significantly (p < 0.001) reduced PFAS concentration in all plant tissues, whereas the microbial mixture tested did not affect PFAS concentration. PFAS uptake ranged from 0.2 to 33% per crop cycle. Overall, the potential number of crop cycles required for removal of 90% of individual PFAS ranged from six (PFPeA) to 232 (PFOA) using sunflower, 15 (PFPeA) to 466 (PFOS) using mustard and nine (PFPeA) to 420 (PFOS) using Hemp. In this study, the percentage of PFAS removal by plants was determined, and an estimation of the time required for PFAS phytoextraction was determined for the first time. This information is important for practical phytoremediation applications.
Transport and transformation of perfluoroalkyl acids, isomer profiles, novel alternatives and unknown precursors from factories to dinner plates in China: New insights into crop bioaccumulation prediction and risk assessment

Abstract:Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are contaminants of global concern, and the inadvertent consumption of PFAA-contaminated crops may pose a threat to public health. Therefore, systematically studying their source tracing, bioaccumulation prediction and risk assessments in crops is an urgent priority. This study investigated the source apportionment and transport of PFAAs and novel fluorinated alternatives (collectively as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, PFASs) from factories to agricultural fields in a fluorochemical industrial region of China. Furthermore, bioaccumulation specificities and prediction of these chemicals in different vegetables were explored, followed by a comprehensive risk assessment from agricultural fields to dinner plates which considered precursor degradation. A positive matrix factorization model revealed that approximately 70 % of PFASs in agricultural soils were derived from fluorochemical manufacturing and metal processing. Alarming levels of ∑PFASs ranged 8.28-84.3 ng/g in soils and 163-7176 ng/g in vegetables. PFAS with short carbon chain or carboxylic acid group as well as branched isomers exhibited higher environmental transport potentials and bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) across a range of vegetables. The BAFs of different isomers of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) decreased as the perfluoromethyl group moved further from the acid functional group. Hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (GenX) showed relatively low BAFs, probably related to its ether bond with a high affinity to soil. Vegetables with fewer Casparian strips (e.g., carrot and radish), or more protein, possessed larger BAFs of PFASs. A bioaccumulation equation integrating critical parameters of PFASs, vegetables and soils, was built and corroborated with a good contamination prediction. After a total oxidizable precursors (TOP) assay, incremental perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) were massively found (325-5940 ng/g) in edible vegetable parts. Besides, precursor degradation and volatilization loss of PFASs was firstly confirmed during vegetable cooking. A risk assessment based on the TOP assay was developed to assist the protection of vegetable consumers.

Abstract:A theoretical study of the radiative decay of low-lying doubly excited {sup 1}P{sup o} states of Helium in the energy region below the He{sup +}(N=2) threshold is presented. We calculated the oscillator strength from the ground state, the Auger and radiative decay rates, and the natural widths of these states. These rates are used to obtain the photon emission and metastable atom yield spectra to compare with experimental measurements, including those from Odling-Smee [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2598 (2000)] and Rubensson [Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 947 (1999)]. We showed that the lifetimes of the long-lived doubly excited states are determined by the radiative rates.

Abstract:Prochloraz (PTIC) is a hazardous fungicide used worldwide on agricultural produce despite concerns about potential impacts on human health and environmental pollution. The residue of PTIC and its metabolite 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) in fresh produce has largely not been clarified. Herein, we address this research gap by examining residues of PTIC and 2,4,6-TCP in fruit of Citrus sinensis through a typical storage period. PTIC residue in the exocarp and mesocarp peaked on days 7 and 14, respectively, while 2,4,6-TCP residue gradually increased throughout storage period. Based upon gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and RNA-sequencing analysis, we reported the potential impact of residual PTIC on endogenous terpene production, and identified 11 DEGs encoding enzymes involved in terpene biosynthesis in Citrus sinensis. Additionally, we investigated both the reduction efficacy (max: 58.93%) of plasma-activated water in citrus exocarp and the minimal impact on quality attributes of citrus mesocarp. The present study not only sheds light on the residual distribution of PTIC and its impact on endogenous metabolism in Citrus sinensis, but also further provides theoretical basis for potential approaches for efficiently reducing or eliminating pesticide residues.

Abstract:In this study, various crops and farmland soils were collected from the Fen-Wei Plain, China, to investigate the bioavailability of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), their accumulation in edible plant tissues, and the factors impacting their accumulation. PFAS were frequently detected in all of the crops, with total concentrations ranging from 0.61 to 35.8 ng/g. The results of sequential extractions with water, basic methanol, and acidic methanol indicate that water extraction enables to characterize the bioavailability of PFAS in soil to edible plant tissues more accurately, especially for the shorter-chain homologues. The bioavailability of PFAS was remarkably enhanced in the rhizosphere (RS) soil, with the strongest effect observed for leafy vegetables. The water-extracted Σ16PFAS in RS soil was strongly correlated with the content of dissolved organic carbon in the soil. Tannins and lignin, identified as the main components of plant root exudates by Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, were found to enhance the bioavailability of PFAS significantly. Redundancy analysis provided strong evidence that the lipid and protein contents in edible plant tissues play important roles in the accumulation of short- and long-chain PFAS, respectively. Additionally, the high water demand of these tissues during the growth stage greatly facilitated the translocation of PFAS, particularly for the short-chain homologues and perfluorooctanoic acid.
