Abstract:The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence, incidence, and the associated factors of pressure injuries (PIs) among immobile hospitalised patients in China. Being immobile during hospitalisation put these patients at a higher risk of PIs. There is little literature about pressure injury (PI) prevalence or PI incidence in immobile hospitalised patients in hospitals in China. This was a multicentre, cross-sectional, exploratory descriptive study. A total of 23 985 immobile patients were recruited from 25 general hospitals in six provinces of China from November 1, 2015 to March 18, 2016. Information was collected on demographic characteristics, physical assessment information, and treatment and nursing care measures. The PI period prevalence was 3.38%, and the PI cumulative incidence was 1.23%. Most PIs (84.03%) were Stage 1 or Stage 2. A total of 48.22% of PIs occurred in the sacrum or heel region. In the multivariate analysis, the following factors were associated with higher PI prevalence: age, gender, length of immobility, type of hospital, modified Braden Scale score, urinary incontinence, faecal incontinence, low serum albumin, the usage of fixation or restraint devices, and patient's discharge diagnosis (lower limb fracture, malnutrition, and spinal cord injury). PI prevalence for immobile hospitalised patients in the study was lower than those reported in literature. However, because of the large population in China, the number of patients who suffer with PIs can be very high. The relating factors of higher PI prevalence identified in this study were consistent with current literature. Patients with a higher number of these associated factors should be monitored more closely, and preventative measures should be taken to prevent PI occurrence in high-risk populations.

Abstract:Surgery is a high risk factor for the occurrence of pressure injury (PI). On the basis of theoretical research, pressure and duration of pressure are key factors affecting PI. Pressure is affected by the individual pressure redistribution capacity. So our study aims to explore how the surgery time and pressure intensity affect the occurrence of PI and what are the risk factors. A prospective study. A total of 250 patients who underwent elective surgery in a grade-A general hospital from November 2021 to February 2023 were selected and divided into a group of 77 patients with IAPI (intraoperatively acquired pressure injury) and a group of 173 patients with no IAPI. Visual pressure inductive feedback system and body composition analysis technology were used to record the local pressure value and change of patients before and after anaesthesia. Relevant data of the patients were collected to explore the influencing factors. The maximum pressure and average pressure at the pressure site of the same patient changed before and after anaesthesia, and the pressure after anaesthesia was significantly higher than that before anaesthesia. There was no statistical difference in the average pressure after anaesthesia (p > 0.05), but the maximum pressure in the IAPI group was higher than that in the non-occurrence group (p < 0.05). The average pressure multiplied by the operation time in IAPI group is significantly higher than that in the non-IAPI group (p < 0.01). Multiple linear regression analysis (stepwise regression) showed that fat-free weight, age, waist circumference, body mass index (BMI) and gender were taken as independent variables into the regression model, affecting the maximum pressure. In addition, operation time ≥4 h may be a high risk factor for IAPI. In future studies, more objective research tools can be applied to improve the accuracy of predicting the risk of IAPI. In addition to gender and BMI, follow-up studies may consider including measures such as waist circumference and fat-free body weight in IAPI risk assessment to guide the clinical nursing work more scientifically.
Mutagenic activity of the 4,5‐ and 9,10‐dihydrodiols of benzo[J]fluoranthene and their syn‐ and anti‐dihydrodiol epoxides in salmonella typhimurium

Abstract:The objective of this study was to determine the relative mutagenic activities of the major dihydrodiol metabolites of benzo[j]fluoranthene (B[j]F) and their corresponding syn‐ and anti‐dihydrodiol epoxides. Salmonella typhimurium tester strains TA97a, TA98, and TA100 were used to evaluate the mutagenic potencies of the parent hydrocarbon and these suspect proximate and ultimate mutagenic metabolites. B[j]F and the trans‐dihydrodiol metabolites were active only in the presence of an external metabolic activation system (S9) with the exception of the B[j]F‐4,5‐diol, which was weakly active in TA98 and TA100 in the absence of S9. The B[j]F‐4,5‐diol was more mutagenic than the B[j]F‐9,10‐diol in tester strains TA98 and TA100, whereas the opposite effect was observed in TA97a. In the absence of S9, the anti‐B[j]F‐4,5‐diol epoxide was more mutagenic than the syn‐B[j]F‐4,5‐diol epoxide and the syn‐ and anti‐B[j]F‐9,10‐diol epoxides in tester strains TA97a and TA100. The exceptional mutagenic potency of the anti‐B[j]F‐4,5‐diol epoxide in TA100 resembles that observed by epoxides located within a fjord, or by the anti‐diol epoxides of bay region methylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. In contrast, the mutagenicity of the pseudo bay region dihydrodiol epoxides arising from the B[j]F‐9,10‐diol more closely resembles that observed with the classical bay region dihydrodiol epoxides of chrysene. In summary, both dihydrodiol metabolites of B[j]F are mutagenic in S. typhimurium, and the relative potency varies among the tester strains. The highest mutagenic response was achieved in tester strain TA100, which detects base‐pair substitutions. The most potent direct‐acting dihydrodiol epoxide in this tester strain was the anti‐B[j]F‐4,5‐diol epoxide, which agrees with the results of mouse skin painting studies that indicate that the B[j]F‐4,5‐diol is more tumorigenic that the parent hydrocarbon or the B[j]F‐9,10‐diol. A cova‐lent DNA adduct formed between the anti‐B[j]F‐4,5‐diol epoxide and deoxyguanosine was the major species of DNA adduct formed in S. typhimurium. This adduct corresponds to the major DNA adduct formed in mouse skin following application B[j]F.
A Multicenter, Comparative Study of Two Pressure-Redistribution Mattresses with Repositioning Intervals for Critical Care Patients

Abstract:Objective: To compare the effectiveness of two protocols for preventing pressure injuries (PIs) in Chinese hospitals. Design and setting: A multicenter, open-label, comparative study conducted in seven Chinese acute care hospitals. Patients and intervention: In total, 1,654 eligible patients were identified, and 1,204 were enrolled in the study. Enrolled patients were randomly assigned into the trial group (4-hour repositioning combined with a viscoelastic foam mattress; n = 602) or the control group (2-hour repositioning combined with a powered air pressure redistribution mattress; n = 602). Participants received their respective protocols until they were discharged, died, or for at least 7 days. Main outcome measures: The incidence of PIs, Braden Scale scores, and the time to development of PIs. Main results: Ultimately, 596 trial group patients and 598 control group patients were analyzed. Thirteen patients had single new stage 2 or worse PIs. The total incidence of PIs was 1.1%. The difference between the two groups was significant (0.3% vs 1.8%). However, the difference between the groups' Braden Scale score median during the intervention was not significant (13 vs 13.5). Conclusions: The 4-hour repositioning interval combined with a viscoelastic foam mattress did not increase PI incidence or risk. These findings could help providers select the right pressure redistribution mattresses and repositioning intervals for critical care patients.
Prevention of Pressure Injuries in the Operating Room: A Quality Improvement Project

Abstract:Prevention of hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) remains a crucial clinical challenge especially for those patients undergoing surgery. The purpose of this project was to examine whether a 5-layer silicone foam dressing applied to the sacrum of patients undergoing vascular surgery decreased the occurrence of sacral pressure injuries and to explore participant characteristics associated with the development of operating room (OR)-related pressure injuries. A pre-/postintervention design, quality improvement project in a convenience sample of 81 patients undergoing vascular surgery, in a 700-bed level I trauma acute care setting, in the Northeastern United States. Eighty-one patients undergoing vascular surgery participated in this project. Thirty-seven were in the preintervention group who were identified from the housewide pressure injury prevalence data from May and December 2010 and received standard pressure injury prevention while hospitalized. Forty-four patients in the intervention group were identified from a hospital-based outpatient vascular surgery office and preoperatively received the 5-layer silicone foam dressing in addition to standard care. Data were collected on the third and seventh postoperative days via the electronic medical record and paper medical records. Collected data included age, gender, comorbidities (diabetes, hypertension, peripheral vascular disease and, smoking status), presence of a 5-layer silicone sacral foam dressing, and pressure injury occurrence. Analysis included descriptive statistics, Fisher exact test to compare groups, and logistic regression to identify associated risk factors. More than 50% (n = 19) in the preintervention group developed a hospital-acquired pressure injury while only 1 subject (n = 2%) in the intervention group developed a hospital-acquired pressure injury (P = .000). Findings indicate that, after controlling for age, gender, and other comorbidities, application of a 5-layer silicone sacral foam dressing significantly reduced the likelihood of development of a new pressure injury (OR= 0.04, 95% confidence interval, 0.00-40; P = .006). This pre–/postquality improvement project, using a 5-layer silicone sacral foam dressing in addition to standard operating room pressure injury preventive interventions, for elective vascular surgical cases, resulted in a significant decrease in sacral operating room-related pressure injuries. These findings suggest the effectiveness of a 5-layer silicone foam dressing when added to standard preventive interventions. The findings warrant further investigation of additional preventative interventions in the OR specific to high-risk populations.

Abstract:Objective: To determine if subepidermal moisture (SEM) measures help detect and prevent intraoperative acquired pressure injuries (IAPIs) for prone-position surgery. Methods: In this clinical trial of patients (n = 39 preintervention, n = 48 intervention, 100 historical control) undergoing prone-position surgery, researchers examined the use of multidimensionally flexible silicone foam (MFSF) dressings applied preoperatively to patients' face, chest, and iliac crests. Visual skin assessments and SEM measures were obtained preoperatively, postoperatively, and daily for up to 5 days or until discharge. Electronic health record review included demographic, medical, and surgery data. Results: Of the 187 total participants, 76 (41%) were women. Participants' mean age was 61.0 ± 15.0 years, and 9.6% were Hispanic (n = 18), 9.6% were Asian (n = 18), 6.9% were Black or African American (n = 13), and 73.8% were White (n = 138). Participants had a mean Scott-Triggers IAPI risk score of 1.5 ± 1.1. Among those with no erythema preoperatively, fewer intervention participants exhibited postoperative erythema on their face and chest than did preintervention participants. Further, fewer intervention participants had SEM-defined IAPIs at all locations in comparison with preintervention participants. The MFSF dressings overcame IAPI risk factors of surgery length, skin tone, and body mass index with fewer IAPIs in intervention participants. Conclusions: Patients undergoing prone-position surgeries developed fewer IAPIs, and SEM measures indicated no damage when MFSF dressings were applied to sites preoperatively. The SEM measures detected more damage than visual assessment.

Abstract:Objective: Present study is designed to evaluate the effects of preventing pressure ulcer in surgical patients with two types of pressure-relieving mattresses. Methods: 1074 surgical patients from 12 hospitals in China were divided into A group (static air mattress with repositioning every 2 hours, n = 562) and B group (power pressure air mattress with repositioning every 2 hours, n = 512). The patient was subjected to a pressure-relieving mattress and observed from 0-5 days after surgery. Indications include the Braden scores, hospital-acquired pressure ulcers (HAPU) incidence and stage. Results: The Braden scores between two groups in five days after surgery were no significant (P > 0.05). The incidence of HAPU between two groups in same days also was no significant (1.07% vs. 0.98%, P > 0.05). The incidence of Stage I and stage II pressure ulcers in group A and B were 1.07% (6/562) and 0.98% (5/512), respectively (chi(2) = 0.148, P = 0.882). Conclusion: The effects of preventing pressure ulcer in surgical patients with two types of pressure-relieving mattresses are similar, but the protocol by static air mattress with repositioning every 2 hours is benefit when no power.

Incidence and Risk Factors of Pressure Injuries in Surgical Spinal Patients

Abstract:PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to measure the incidence and identify risk factors of pressure injury development during the perioperative period in patients undergoing spinal surgery requiring intraoperative positioning in the prone position. DESIGN: Review of medical records. SUBJECTS AND SETTING: The sample comprised 3834 patients; 52.2% (n = 2006) were male and 65.5% (n = 2516) were older than 60 years. Most patients underwent surgery of the lumbosacral spinal segments (43.4%, n = 1667) followed by cervical (32.3%, n = 1241) and thoracic spinal segments (24.2%, n = 932). The study setting was the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University, Jiang XI Province in southeastern China. METHODS: We reviewed charts of patients who underwent spinal surgery requiring intraoperative positioning in the prone position from November 2013 to July 2016. Demographic data, Braden Scale for Pressure Sore Risk cumulative score (measured before preoperative transport), body mass index (BMI), duration of surgery, preoperative time (time between preoperative transport from the inpatient unit to when the operation began), postoperative time (time between when the operation was over and postoperative transport to the inpatient unit), and development of any pressure injury were collected using a standardized form. Factors associated with an increased or decreased likelihood of pressure injury were initially evaluated with χ2 and independent t tests. Logistic regression was then used to identify potential risk factors for perioperative pressure injury in patients undergoing open spinal surgery requiring placement in the supine position during surgery. RESULTS: One hundred eighty-four of 3840 patients (4.7%) developed pressure injuries. Multivariate analysis indicated that factors associated with intraoperative pressure injury development were older than 60 years (odds ratio [OR] = 1.05, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.02-2.17), BMI under 18 kg/m2 (OR = 2.45, 95% CI = 4.05-5.21), cumulative Braden Scale score 13 or less (OR = 6.59, CI = 2.23-3.98), prolonged preoperative time (OR = 5.99, 95% CI = 3.21-6.12), and prolonged postoperative time (OR = 14.23, 95% CI = 10.23-21.19). CONCLUSIONS: Based on these findings we recommend extending preventive interventions for pressure injury to incorporate the time from preoperative transport to the surgical suite to inpatient care unit following surgery.

Pressure Injury Prevention in Cardiac Surgery Using Risk Factor Assessment and Standardization

Abstract:Cardiac surgical patients are more susceptible to pressure injury (PI) than other surgical specialties, and little is known about PI prevention (PIP) in this population. How do PIP strategies, compared to standard care, affect the incidence of PI during the post-operative recovery among adult cardiac surgery patients? The aim was to reduce the incidence of UAPI in an adult CVSICU by 5% in six weeks. The conceptual framework chosen was The Iowa Model Revised, and the theoretical framework employed was the Theoretical Model for Lesion Development. Quality improvement, single-group pretest-posttest design. Sample consisted of 69 cardiac surgery, LVAD, ECMO patients at Johns Hopkins CVSICU. The intervention was a standardized PIP bundle provided to “highest risk” patients screened before surgery. Outcome measures were UAPI count and incidence rates. Process measures were percentage of patients screened, prophylactic sacral dressing, rental bed cost. Balancing measures were PI severity, anatomic location, and time between wounds. Baseline data consisted of historic data and intervention data consisted of weekly survey observations. Implementation consisted of staff education, daily preoperative screening, weekly wound rounds. 33% of patients screened as “highest risk” and received the PIP bundle. PI count decreased from 25 to 13 during implementation and wound stages improved. Chi Square test of 2-proportions showed a reduced PI incidence of 8.56% (Z=1.66, p= .048) and 2-sample Poisson rate showed significance in count (Z=1.95, p=.036). Location changed to nose, buttocks, and occipital locations. There was an overall cost savings of $78,660. Reducing PI lead to reduced morbidity and cost.

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the impact of shear stress on surgery-related sacral pressure injury (PI) after laparoscopic colorectal surgery performed in the lithotomy position. We included 37 patients who underwent this procedure between November 2021 and October 2022. The primary outcome was average horizontal shear stress caused by the rotation of the operating table during the operation, and the secondary outcome was interface pressure over time. Sensors were used to measure shear stress and interface pressure in the sacral region. Patients were divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of PI. PI had an incidence of 32.4%, and the primary outcome, average horizontal shear stress, was significantly higher in the PI group than in the no-PI group. The interface pressure increased over time in both groups. At 120 min, the interface pressure was two times higher in the PI group than in the no-PI group (PI group, 221.5 mmHg; no-PI group, 86.0 mmHg; p < 0.01). This study suggested that shear stress resulting from rotation of the operating table in the sacral region by laparoscopic colorectal surgery performed in the lithotomy position is the cause of PI. These results should contribute to the prevention of PI.

Abstract:Electric utilities have expressed concern over increased nonlinear loading of residential power distribution systems. The number and variety of power electronic products found in the typical home continues to grow rapidly, imposing a burden on local power companies to supply reliable, distortion-free service. In order to adequately prepare for the future, utilities must be able to predict the harmonic impact of new power electronic equipment and evaluate the ability of existing power systems to accommodate these nonlinear loads. This paper describes a modeling methodology that uses SPICE simulation software to predict the voltage distortion caused by nonlinear residential loads. Results of applying the methodology to a specific distribution system containing either of two different types of harmonic-rich loads, i.e., variable-speed air conditioners or electric vehicle battery chargers, are presented as well.

Abstract:Intraoperatively acquired pressure injuries (IAPIs) occur frequently among patients who undergo surgical procedures that last longer than 3 h. Several studies indicated that heat shock proteins (HSPs) play an important role in the protection of stress-induced damages in skin tissues. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the potential preventive effect of thermal preconditioning (TPC) on IAPIs in surgical patients and rats and to identify the differentially expressed HSP genes in response to the above treatment. TPC was performed on one group of hairless rats before the model of pressure injuries was established. Subsequently, the size of skin lesions was measured and the expression levels of mRNA and protein of HSPs of the pressured skin were detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), western blot, and immunohistochemical staining. For human studies, 118 surgical patients were randomly divided into the TPC group (n = 59) and the control group (n = 59), respectively. The temperature and pressure of sacral skin, as well as the incidence of pressure injury (PI) were detected and compared. In animal studies, TPC significantly reduced both the size and incidence of PI in rats on the second, third and fourth days post treatment. In addition, the expression levels of both mRNA and protein of HSP27 were increased in the TPC group, compared with the control group. Immunohistochemical staining showed that HSP27 was distributed in various types of dermal cells and increased in basal cells. In human studies, a significant reduction (75%) of IAPIs was observed among the patients in the TPC group. TPC can reduce the incidence of PI in rats and humans, and the upregulation of HSP27 may play an important role in this biological progress. Further studies are warranted to explore the molecular mechanism of the preventive effect in PI mediated by HSP27.

Abstract:Morphological, morphometric, histochemical and immunocytochemical investigations on mast cells, located in the wall of ureter of 8 months aged pigs were performed. Mast cells were found in all three layers of ureteral wall, but their distribution was irregular and the number unequal. It was established that alcian blue (AB)‐positive mast cells were significantly more than toluidine blue (TB)‐positive mast cells. A statistically significant smaller number of both AB and TB‐stained mast cells were observed in the tunica mucosa. The largest number of mast cells was found in the tunica muscularis. In the adventitia, mast cells were higher in number in the main connective tissue than in the connective tissue near the blood vessels. Mast cells stained with TB showed variably expressed γ‐metachromasia, which was best visible in those situated in the lamina propria of the mucosa. The prevailing parts of mast cells, however, were AB‐positive after AB‐safranin staining. This was mostly found in mast cells of the tunica muscularis and in mast cells of perivascular location in the tunica adventitia. Immunocytochemically, mast cells were found to be positive for histamine and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide in the muscle coat, and to histamine in the adventitia, as well. On the basis of obtained results it was presumed that the mast cells in porcine ureter most probably took part not only in keeping of local homeostasis, but played also an important role of mobility of smooth muscle cells in the middle layer of ureter on one hand, and, on the other, in the adventitial blood vessels.
Preventing pressure injury in open-heart surgical patients: A systematic review

Abstract:Background: Cardiac surgical patients are highly prone to developing surgery-related Pressure injuries (PIs). Prevention of PIs is an important patient safety priority in healthcare settings and patients care. So the aim of this study is to detect the effectiveness of prevention strategies to decrease PIs prevalence and incidence in patients undergoing open heart surgery. Method: We identified studies through Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, Cochrane, and ProQuest databases from inception through September 2022 with restrictions on the English language. Cochrane RoB 2, JBI, and NIH checklist were carried out as critical appraisal Tools to investigate the studies risk of bias. Finally, 10 studies with a total sample No. 1348, which fulfilled eligibility criteria were included in final systematic review. Result: Most common interventions investigated in included studies were addressing impairments skin care which included the use of multilayer silicone foam, Care bundle and multiple intervention programs, alternative head inflatable pads, pressure-reducing foam mattresses, and electric bed frames as the effective PIs Prevention (PIP) strategies. While repositioning is one of the important causes mentioned in most PIP protocols, there was not adequate evidence to recommend any special turning regimens for PIP. Conclusion: Given current evidence, multilayer silicone foam, Care bundle and multiple intervention programs, alternative inflatable head pads, pressure-reducing foam mattresses, and electric bed frames are effective strategies to prevent pressure ulcers. Further investigations are needed to specify the cost-effectiveness of mentioned strategies and RCTs to determine other PIP strategies such as repositioning and mobilization, nutritional supplementation, creams, and co-interventions effects.

Abstract:To compare fluidized positioners and gel pads for skin protection in neurosurgery patients placed in lateral and prone positions. It is one of the major challenges that operating room nurses face in protecting the skin during the long duration of neurosurgery. Currently, there are increasing tools available to protect the skin under pressure, and various tools practice well in the clinic. Fluidized positioners are newly emerging protective pads that have been clinically effective in protecting the skin, but no studies have compared them to previous pads. This is a retrospective cohort study. Data from 706 patients who underwent neurosurgery between January 2018 and December 2021 were systemically reviewed. Patients undergoing long‐term neurosurgery in the neurosurgical lateral and prone positions were divided into two groups: fluidized positioners or gel pads. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed for group balance (1:1 ratio) using the following baseline characteristics: age, gender, ASA (American Society of Anesthesiologists) classification, duration of surgery, surgical position and underlying disease. The incidence of decubitus, and length of stay (LOS) in the hospital were compared between the two groups. The results were obtained for 394 patients in the fluidized positioner group with a 3.8% incidence of pressure ulcers and 312 patients in the gel pad group with an 8% incidence of pressure ulcers, which were unbalanced in terms of gender, ASA, hypertension and diabetes data. Abstract:Background The operating room has always been a key clinical inspection high-risk department. The “;Detailed Rules for the Implementation of Evaluation Standards for Tertiary General Hospitals” issued by the Ministry of Health in 2011 emphasized the establishment of operating room quality and safety indicators, which can be evaluated regularly, and continuous improvement is required. The nursing level of nurses in the room is directly related to the overall nursing quality of the hospital. Objective To observe the impact of detailed nursing in operating room based on risk management on surgical patient satisfaction and intraoperative risk control. Methods A retrospective selection of 130 patients who were treated in the operating room of our hospital from January 2018 to March 2020 was retrospectively selected. Among them, 65 patients used conventional operating room nursing procedures, and the other 65 patients used risk management-based operating room detailed nursing procedures. The intraoperative rescue, secondary intubation, incidence of > 3 h in room, nursing error rate, postoperative general situation (recovery time of bowel sounds, first exhaust time, ambulation time, postoperative complication rate) and satisfaction were compared between the two groups. Visual analogue scale (VAS) score was used to evaluate the degree of postoperative pain. Nursing quality score and health survey short form (SF-36) were used to evaluate nursing quality and quality of life. Results: Intraoperative rescue (0.00%), secondary intubation (0.00%), in-room> 3h incidence (1.54%) and nursing error rate (0.00%) in the observation group were compared with those in the control group, which were not statistically significant (P >0.05). The recovery time of bowel sounds in the observation group was (41.71 ±3.46) h, the time to first exhaust (59.47±5.23) h, and the time to get out of bed (54.36±4.78) d were shorter than those in the control group. The postoperative complication rate (3.08%) was lower than that of the control group, which had statistical significance (P<0.05). The VAS scores of the observation group at 6h, 12h, and 24h after surgery were lower than those of the control group, and the satisfaction level of the observation group (93.85%) was higher than that of the control group, which had statistical significance (P<0.05). Observation group’s nursing quality score (nursing skills, environmental management, nursing quality monitoring, disinfection and isolation, nursing document management), quality of life score (physical function, social support, pain, mental health, social function, mood, mental state, general health) All were higher than the control group, which had statistical significance (P<0.05). Conclusion: The application of operation room detail nursing based on risk management in surgery can reduce postoperative pain, promote the recovery of gastrointestinal function, improve patient satisfaction and quality of life, and effectively control intraoperative risks.

Abstract:The randomized controlled study investigated the impacts of immediate peri-operative Intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) on hemodynamic indicators in patients undergoing laparoscopic gynecologic surgery. Patients scheduled for elective laparoscopic gynecologic surgery were randomized to control (IPC not used), pre-operative IPC, post-operative IPC, and peri-operative IPC (performed both before and after surgery) groups. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), mean blood pressure (MBP) cardiac output (CO), heart rate (HR) and systemic vascular resistance (SVR) were measured at different time points. The results showed that SBP changes not obviously over time in the control and peri-operative IPC group. Compared with values before surgery, the pre-operative IPC group had a lower SBP ( P < 0.01) at the end of PACU stay, whereas the post-operative IPC group had a higher SBP ( P < 0.01) after surgery. All groups exhibited little or no variation in HR, CO and SVR. Conclusion is peri-operative IPC has no major adverse effects on hemodynamic parameters.
