Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the properties of low temperature degradation (LTD) of dental Y-TZP by experiments.METHODS:According to ISO 13356-2008 standards, 72 blanks of Y-TZP were sintered at different temperature (1 400 °C,1 450 °Cor 1 530 °C) and in different heat preserving time(2 h or 5 h), and then the specimens were grounded and polished. The blanks were divided into 12 groups according to the different sintering temperature, heat preserving time and aging time. The surface of specimens was observed by SEM to evaluate the grain size of specimens; Each group of specimens was exposed to 140 °C hydrothermal aging environment for 0 h, 5 h or 24 h. After aging, XRD analysis was undertaken to determine the amount of phase transformation from tetragonal to monoclinic for each groups. At last, the biaxial flexural strengths of all specimens were measured and calculated.RESULTS:The SEM showed that the grain size of each group of Y-TZP increased with the increase of sintering temperature and heat preserving time, however, all of them were below 1 μm. The XRD analysis showed the contents of monoclinic of each group varied with different sintering temperatures, heat preserving times and aging time. The flexural strength of 24 h aging groups declined significantly; but that of 5 h aging group showed increase or decrease according to the different sintering temperatures and heat preserving times.CONCLUSION:Different sintering procedures to some extent may affect the Y-TZP aging properties.
Effect of low-temperature degradation on the fatigue performance of dental strength-gradient multilayered zirconia restorations

Abstract:Objectives : Fatigue and low-temperature degradation (LTD) are the main factors contributing to zirconia restoration failure. This study evaluated the effect of LTD on the fatigue performance of the novel "strength & shade-gradient" multilayered zirconia restorations. Methods : Discs (15 mm × 1.2 mm) of each yttria content layer from a newly developed strength-gradient multilayered zirconia were fabricated and under accelerated aging in an autoclave at 134°C for 0 h, 32 h, and 64 h. Then, the phase transformation, microstructure, and mechanical properties after LTD were assessed. In addition, the crown samples, including the multi-Zir, 3Y-Zir, and 5Y-Zir were fabricated, and their monotonic and fatigue load before and after LTD, percentage of fatigue degradation ( S d ) and the fracture morphology were investigated. Statistical analyses were performed using paired samples t -test (α' = α/3 = 0.017), one-way ANOVA and Weibull analysis. Results : After LTD, the phase transformation, surface roughness, depth of transformed zone, and residual stress were increased and inversely associated with the yttria content. The indentation elastic modulus and hardness after LTD decreased; however, there was no significant difference between the different yttria content layers. The monotonic and fatigue load of multi-Zir restorations decreased, but their Weibull modulus increased, and S d decreased, similar to 3Y-Zir. The crack origin was associated with the cervical region. Conclusion : These results show that although LTD reduces the absolute fatigue strength of strength-gradient multilayered zirconia restorations, it also reduces the effect of cyclic fatigue itself on the strength of zirconia (relative to monotonic strength), which might be due to the increase of residual stress. Clinical Significance : The novel "strength & shade-gradient" multilayered zirconia restorations show a promising performance during in vitro LTD and fatigue test and their reliability to some extent is comparable to 3Y-Zir. Yet, further in vivo longitudinal studies are warranted to confirm their precise performance.

Effect of Hydrothermal, Chemical, and Mechanical Degradation on Flexural Strength and Phase Transformation of Ground, Glazed, and Polished Zirconia

Abstract:Objectives: Evaluation of the effect of grinding on flexural strength of zirconia after low temperature degradation (LTD) and pH-cycling. Materials and Methods: Sixty-four bar-shaped specimens of yttria-stabilized tetragonal polycrystalline zirconia were milled, sintered, wet-polished, and divided into 8 groups (N=8). The four control groups were not aged while artificial aging was performed in the 4 experimental groups in three steps including LTD in steam for 40h, pH-cycling, and tooth brushing for artificial aging. All groups underwent surface preparations as follows: standard polishing without surface treatment (Sp), grinding with a blue-yellow band diamond instrument (Gr); grinding with a diamond rotary instrument (DRI) and then over-glazing (Gl); grinding with a DRI followed by two-step intraoral polishing (Po); standard polishing and aging (Sp-Ag); grinding and aging (Gr-Ag), grinding, over-glazing and aging (Gl-Ag); and grinding, polishing and aging (Po-Ag). Monoclinic content was assessed in one specimen of each group by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The 3-point flexural strength test was performed in a universal testing machine. The results were analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05). Results: Mean flexural strength (Mpa) was significantly higher in groups Gr and Po compared to group Sp (both, P<0.0001) and group Gl (both, P<0.0001). In XRD analyses, the highest monoclinic phase before aging was observed in group Gr (12.6%), and after aging in group Gr-Ag (51.2%). Conclusion: Grinding and polishing increased the flexural strength, while glazing did not exhibit any significant effect on this parameter. Furthermore, aging did not adversely affect flexural strength.
In vitro evaluation of low-temperature aging effects and finishing procedures on the flexural strength and structural stability of Y-TZP dental ceramics

Abstract:STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) ceramic material has been reported to possess exceptionally high flexural strength; however, the strength of Y-TZP ceramics can be affected by surface treatments performed by dental laboratory technicians and by intraoral conditions.PURPOSE: This study investigated the influence of low-temperature-degradation (LTD) treatment, airborne-particle abrasion, and polishing on the flexural strength and structural stability of a Y-TZP ceramic material.MATERIAL AND METHODS: By sectioning zirconia ceramic blocks (Vita In-Ceram YZ blocks) into 25 x 4 x 2-mm bars, 310 specimens were fabricated and divided into 9 groups: Group C, as-sintered (control); group B24h, boiled in water for 24 hours; group B7d, boiled in water for 7 days; group H6h, stored in humidified air at 250 degrees C for 6 hours; group H24h, stored in humidified air at 250 degrees C for 24 hours; group H7d, stored in humidified air at 250 degrees C for 7 days; group P, polished; group A, airborne-particle abraded; and group AB, airborne-particle abraded and boiled for 7 days. The flexural strengths (MPa) of all specimens were determined by using a 3-point bending test. The variability was analyzed by using Weibull statistics. Pairwise differences among the 9 groups were evaluated by using confidence intervals (95%) for scale and shape parameters. From every block used, 8 specimens were obtained and every specimen was marked according to the location of its origin from the original block. Surfaces of the specimens were evaluated by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at various magnifications. X-ray diffraction analysis was performed to identify possible tetragonal-to-monoclinic phase transformations. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was used to obtain information on the chemical composition.RESULTS: Aging or "finishing" treatments had no significant negative effects on flexural strengths. Mean flexural strengths ranged from 796.7 to 950.2 MPa. Group A exhibited the highest mean flexural strength (950.2 MPa). Weibull modulus values ranged between 5.6 and 9.3. Tetragonal-to-monoclinic phase transformation was detected for a specimen boiled for 24 hours. More tetragonal-to-monoclinic phase transformation was detected for specimens boiled for 7 days and stored in humidified air at 250 degrees C for 7 days. The SEM examination of fractured surfaces revealed sintering defects, and EDS analysis showed less yttria concentration on Y-TZP specimens that were boiled for 7 days.CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this study, the results suggested that the LTD procedures and the polishing treatment used did not reduce the flexural strengths of zirconia bars. Airborne-particle abrasion increased the flexural strength of specimens.CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Although polishing, airborne-particle abrasion, and various low-temperature degradation (LTD) treatments did not significantly degrade the strength of the Y-TZP ceramic material, LTD resulted in loss of yttria. Over time, gradual dissolution of yttria could decrease the tetragonal-phase stability and long-term clinical serviceability of this dental ceramic material.

Abstract:Purpose To evaluate the effect of different surface treatments and adhesive cementation on the miniflexural strength (MFS) of monolithic zirconia. Materials and Methods Two‐hundred and forty (240) sintered bars of translucent zirconia (ZT) and ultra‐translucent zirconia (ZUT) were obtained (8 mm ×2 mm ×1 mm). The bars were divided into 16 groups (n = 15) according to the factors "Zirconia" (ZT and ZUT), "Cementation" (Cem) and "surface treatment" (Ctrl:Control, Al:Aluminum oxide/Al2O3 50 μm, Si:Silica/SiO2 coated alumina particles oxide 30 μm, Gl:Glazing+hydrofluoric acid). Half of the bars received an adhesive layer application, followed by application of resin cement and light curing. The surface roughness was measured in non‐cemented groups. All the bars were subjected to the MFS test (1.0 mm/min; 100 kgf). Scanning electron microscopy was used for qualitative analyses. MFS data (MPa) and roughness (μm) were statistically evaluated by three‐way and two‐way ANOVA respectively and Tukey's test (5%). Results The surface treatment and the interaction were significant for roughness. Glazing promoted less roughness compared to silicatization. Regarding MFS, only the zirconia and surface treatment factors were significant. For ZT, the sandblasted groups had an increase in MFS and glazing reduced it. There was no difference between the groups without cementation for the ZUT; however, ZUT.Si/Cem, and ZUT.Al/Cem obtained superior MFS among the cemented groups. Conclusions Sandblasting increases the flexural strength for ZT, while glaze application tends to reduce it. Applying resin cement increases the flexural strength of ZUT when associated with sandblasting. Sandblasting protocols promote greater surface roughness.

Abstract:Background: Surface treatment of the intaglio surface of zirconia is important for bonding. However, it could affect the strength of the materials. The purpose of this study is to compare the effect of laser, etching, and air abrasion surface treatment methods to a control group on the flexural strength of three zirconia materials with two different thicknesses. (1) Methods: A total of 120 disks were divided into three groups according to the type of zirconia and the ceramic thickness. Then, according to the surface treatment method, the groups were divided into four subdivisions. The change in the microstructure of the ceramic material was investigated through Scanning Electron Microscope (EVO LS10, Carl Zeiss SMT Ltd. Oberkochen, Germany). Phase identification was performed using an X-ray diffraction device (XRD; Ultimate IV X-ray Diffractometer, Rigaku Inc., Tokyo, Japan). The flexural strength was assessed with a biaxial flexural strength test in a universal testing machine. Data were analyzed using SPSS Software (SPSS version 26.0.Armonk, NY: IBM Corp). A three-way ANOVA and a post hoc Dunnett T3 test were employed to evaluate the effect of the yttria concentration, thickness, and surface treatment on the flexural strength of zirconia (α = 0.05). (2) Results: At 0.8 mm thickness, air abrasion significantly increased the flexural strength of 3Y-TZP (1130.6 ± 171.3 MPa) and 4Y-TZP (872 ± 108.6 MPa). However, air abrasion significantly decreased the flexural strength of 5Y-TZP materials (373 ± 46.8 MPa). Laser irradiation significantly decreased the flexural strength of 5Y-TZP (347 ± 50.3 MPa), while etching significantly decreased the flexural strength of both 3Y-TZP (530 ± 48.8) and 4Y-TZP (457.1 ± 57.3). When the thickness increased to 1 mm, air abrasion continued to significantly decrease the flexural strength of 5Y-TZP materials. (3) Conclusions: There was a negative effect of surface treatment on the flexural strength at 0.8 mm thickness rather than at 1 mm thickness. Air abrasion enhances the flexural strength of 3Y-TZP and 4Y-TZP materials but significantly reduces the flexural strength of 5Y-TZP materials. Zircos-E etching and Er:YAG surface treatment methods did not significantly reduce the flexural strength of 5Y-TZP materials at 1 mm thickness and can be recommended as an alternative surface treatment for 5Y-TZP materials.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES:The effects of different surface treatments on cyclic fatigue strengths of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) zirconia implants and its mechanisms were evaluated. MATERIAL AND METHODS:One-piece cylindrical screw-type zirconia (Y-TZP) implants with diameters of 4.1-mm were fabricated using CAD/CAM technique; they were divided into four groups according to the type of surface treatment: (i) sintering (control group, CTRL), (ii) sandblasting (SB), (iii) sandblasting and etching with an experimental hot etching solution (SB-ST), and (iv) sandblasting and etching with hydrofluoric acid (SB-HF). The surface morphology and roughness of the implants were evaluated. Tetragonal to monoclinic transformation was measured on the surface by micro Raman spectroscopy. Static and fatigue tests were carried out at room temperature following the ISO 14801:2014 Standard. The cyclic fatigue strength of each group was determined using the staircase method. Specimens that survived the fatigue test were statically loaded to measure the residual fracture strength. RESULTS:Among the four groups, SB-HF exhibited the highest surface roughness. Compared with the CTRL group, the surface monoclinic content was higher after all three types of surface treatments, amongst which, SB-HF had the highest content (39.14%), significantly more than the other three groups (P < 0.01). The cyclic fatigue strengths of CTRL, SB, SB-ST, and SB-HF implants were 530 N, 662.5 N, 705 N, and 555 N, respectively. The fracture strength after fatigue loading was higher than that before fatigue loading with no significant difference (P＞0.05). CONCLUSIONS:SB and SB-ST remarkably enhanced the fatigue resistance of zirconia implants, while SB-HF did not. One-piece 4.1-mm diameter CAD/CAM zirconia implants have sufficient durability for application in dental implants.
Effect of sintering programs and surface treatments on monolithic zirconia

Abstract:Purpose: To investigate the effect of sintering programs and surface treatments on surface properties, phase transformation and flexural strength of monolithic zirconia. Materials and methods: Zirconia specimens were sintered using three distinct sintering programs [classic (C), speed (S), and superspeed (SS)] (n = 56, each). One sample from each group underwent scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and grain size analysis following sintering. Remaining samples were divided into five subgroups (n = 11) based on the surface treatments: control (CL), polish (P), glaze (G), grind + polish (GP), and grind + glaze (GG). One sample from each subgroup underwent SEM analysis. Remaining samples were thermally aged. Monoclinic phase volume, surface roughness, and three-point flexural strength were measured. Monoclinic phase volume and surface roughness were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests. Flexural strength was analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Weibull analysis. The relationships among the groups were analyzed using Spearman's correlation analysis. Results: Sintering program, surface treatment, and sintering × surface treatment (P ≤ .010) affected the monoclinic phase volume, whereas the type of surface treatment and sintering × surface treatment affected the surface roughness (P < .001). Type of sintering program or surface treatment did not affect the flexural strength. Weibull analysis revealed no significant differences between the m and σo values. Monoclinic phase volume was positively correlated with surface roughness in the SGG and SSP groups. Conclusion: After sintering monolithic zirconia in each of the three sintering programs, each of the surface treatments can be used. However, for surface quality and aging resistance, G or GG can be recommended as a surface finishing method.

Abstract:In this study, the effects of sintering temperature and low-temperature degradation (LTD) on the microstructure and flexural strength of 0.06 wt% Fe2O3-doped 3Y-TZP ceramics fabricated via stereolithography-based additive manufacturing were evaluated to assess their suitability for dental applications. The ceramics' comprehensive properties, including density, microstructure, phase composition, and three-point flexural strength, were analyzed over a range of sintering temperature from 1400 °C to 1600 °C. The findings revealed that specimens sintered at 1500 °C exhibited the highest density (6.03 g/cm3), a uniform microstructure, and superior mechanical properties (911.54 MPa). However, sintering temperatures above 1500 °C led to abnormal grain growth and martensitic transformation of tetragonal zirconia to the monoclinic phase, resulting in reduced density and material degradation. To investigate the effects of LTD on the phase structure, microstructure, and flexural strength, the specimens sintered at 1500 °C were subjected to LTD tests at 134 °C and 2 bar for 5, 10, and 20 h, respectively. The results demonstrated an increase in the m-phase content from 2.58 wt% to 21.89 wt% on the ceramics' surface. Atomic force microscopy observations revealed a gradual increase in the m-phase grain with longer aging time. Meanwhile, the flexural strength decreased but remained within the required range for dental restorations. In conclusion, the specimens fabricated via stereolithography-based additive manufacturing and sintered at 1500 °C for 4 h demonstrated high mechanical properties and good LTD resistance. These findings, in conjunction with the positive aesthetic properties obtained in previous studies, highlight their potential as a promising material for dental applications.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of in vitro low-temperature degradation (LTD) treatments on the structural stability and mechanical properties of two commercial Y-TZP ceramics candidate for dental application. TZ-3YS and TZ-3YS-E powder were chosen because of there minor differences of chemical composition. The two powders were compacted at 200MPa using cold isostatic pressure, and densely sintered at 1500°C and 1450°C for 2hr respectively. Two methods of in vitro LTD treatments were performed, the first is to autoclave specimens in steam at 134°C, 2bar, for 1 to 5hr; the second is to immerse specimens into 4% acetic acid at 80°C for 168 hr. XRD was used to identify the crystal phases, flexural strength were tested according to ISO 6872 standard, surface microstructure was evaluated by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Results show that the relative content of monoclinic phase was increasing with the prolonged aging time, the TZ-3YS was more sensitive to LTD compared with TZ-3YS-E. LTD tests did not necessary reduce the flexural strength of Y-TZP ceramics, the nucleation and growth of monoclinic phase were detected by AFM, and the surface microstructure induced by LTD was not identical between the two Y-TZP ceramics. AFM was a sensitive method to evaluate the transformation of Y-TZP ceramics. To choose appropriate Y-TZP powder for dental application, it is mandatory to examine the microstructure before and after LTD.
Strength-limiting damage and its mitigation in CAD-CAM zirconia-reinforced lithium-silicate ceramics machined in a fully crystallized state

Abstract:Objectives: The objective was to explore how clinically relevant machining process and heat treatment influence damage accumulation and strength degradation in lithium silicate-based glass ceramics machined in the fully crystallized state. Methods: A commercial zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) glass ceramic with a fully developed microstructure (Celtra® Duo) was studied. Disk-shaped specimens (nominal 10 mm diameter and 1 mm thickness) were fabricated either using a CAD-CAM process, creating a clinically relevant dental restoration surface, or were sectioned from water-jet cut cylindrical blocks with their critical surfaces consistently polished. Bi-axial flexure strength (BFS) was determined in a ball-on-ring configuration, and fractographic analysis was performed on failed specimens. XRD, AFM and SEM measurements were conducted before and after heat treatment. For each sample group, BFS was correlated with surface roughness. A two-way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey tests were used to determine differences in BFS between machining and heat treatment groups (ɑ = 0.05). Results: A two-way ANOVA demonstrated that BFS was influenced by fabrication route (p < 0.01) with CAD-CAM specimens exhibiting significantly lower mean BFS. A factorial interaction was observed between heat treatment and machining route (p < 0.01), where a significant strengthening effect of post-manufacture heat treatment was noted for CAD-CAM specimens but not sectioned and polished samples. CAD-CAM specimens exhibited sub-surface lateral cracks alongside radial cracks near fracture origin which were not observed for polished specimens. BFS did not correlate with surface roughness for polished specimens, and no change in microstructure was detectable by XRD following heat treatment. Significance: The mechanical properties of the ZLS ceramic material studied were highly sensitive to the initial surface defect integral associated with manufacturing route and order of operations. CAD-CAM manufacturing procedures result in significant strength-limiting damage which is likely to influence restoration performance; however, this can be partially mitigated by post-machining heat treatment.
Impact of sandblasting on the flexural strength of highly translucent zirconia

Abstract:The objective of this study was to assess the influence of alumina sandblasting on the flexural strength of the latest generation of highly translucent yttria partially stabilized dental zirconia (Y-PSZ). Fully-sintered zirconia disk-shaped specimens (14.5-mm diameter; 1.2-mm thickness) of four Y-PSZ zirconia grades (KATANA HT, KATANA STML, KATANA UTML, all Kuraray Noritake; and Zpex Smile, Tosoh) were sandblasted at 0.2 MPa with 50-μm alumina (Al2O3) sand (Kulzer) or left as-sintered (control). For each zirconia grade, the yttria (Y2O3) content was determined using X-ray fluorescence (XRF). Surface roughness was assessed using 3D confocal laser microscopy. Micro-Raman spectroscopy (μ-Raman) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to assess potentially induced residual stresses. Biaxial flexural strength (n = 20) was statistically compared by Weibull analysis. Focused ion beam - scanning electron microscopy (FIB/SEM) was used to observe the subsurface microstructure. Fracture surfaces after biaxial flexural strength testing were observed by SEM. KATANA UTML had the highest Y2O3 content (6 mol%), followed by KATANA STML and Zpex Smile (5 mol%), and KATANA HT (4 mol%). Al2O3-sandblasting significantly increased surface roughness of KATANA UTML and Zpex Smile. μRaman and XRD revealed the presence of residual compressive stress on all Al2O3-sandblasted surfaces. FIB/SEM revealed several sub-surface microcracks in the sandblasted specimens. Weibull analysis revealed that Al2O3-sandblasting increased the characteristic strength of KATANA HT, KATANA STML, whereas it decreased the strength of KATANA UTML. The strength enhancement after Al2O3-sandblasting of KATANA HT was the highest, followed by KATANA STML. For Zpex Smile, the influence was statistically insignificant. The impact of Al2O3-sandblasting on the Weibull modulus was controversial. The strength of zirconia after Al2O3-sandblasting is determined by the balance between microcrack formation (decreased strength) and surface compressive stress build-up (increased strength).

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of aging on phase transformation and mechanical properties of yttria-tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP).MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fully-sintered Y-TZP slabs, IPS E-max ZirCAD (ZC - Ivoclar) and Z-5 ceramic (Z5 - C5 Medical Werks), were artificially aged in autoclave for: 0, 30, 60 or 90min. Flexural strength (FS), crystalline changes (X-ray diffraction analysis - XRD) and surface topography were analyzed. 0 and 90min-aged samples were evaluated by nanoindentation to measure hardness and modulus, and results were compared using Wilcoxan Mann Whitney rank sum test (p≤0.05). FS results were compared using two-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD (α=0.05).RESULTS: Material factor had significant effect (p=0.001) on flexural strength (Z5=966.95MPa; ZC=847.82MPa), but aging did not. Nanoindentation showed incidence of typical load/depth curves combined with some exhibiting features compatible with cracking. When typical curves were considered, aging had no effect on the modulus and hardness, but hardness was dependent on material type. A steady increase in the m phase related to aging time was observed for ZC samples. The maximum incidence of m phase was 6.56% for Z5/60min.SIGNIFICANCE: Flexural strength is not affected by surface transformation in dental Y-TZP. Hydrothermal aging has an effect on m content and surface topography of different zirconia brands, but mechanical tests that can precisely characterize surface changes in aged Y-TZP are still missing.

Abstract:Objective This study aimed to compare the four-point flexural strength of CAM-milled and sintered (as-sintered, AS) specimens with those of high-polished (HP) specimens using chairside polishing systems to simulate clinical surface conditions. Methods Seven full-contour zirconia CAM/CAM blanks with various yttria contents (3, 4, 5 mol%) including three high-translucent groups (5Y) were selected to prepare flexural specimens. The bend bar specimens (2.0 × 4.0 × 25.0 mm 3 ) were fabricated by using STL file and dental CAM machine with the respective zirconia blanks (98 mm φ and 10–14 mm in height). Twelve bar specimens were machined from one zirconia puck and a total of 24 specimens were prepared from each group. The pre-sintered bar specimens were sintered by using a dental zirconia furnace at 1530–1550 °C for 2 h according to the instructions. All sintered specimens were divided into two groups: as-sintered (AS) group and high-polished (HP) groups (n = 12). HP groups were subjected to polishing one surface of specimens using a three-step polishing system and finally finished with diamond polishing. After cleaning and drying, the flexural strength of all specimens was determined by a fully articulating four-point flexure fixture consisting of a 1/4-point test configuration with an inner/outer span of 10/20 mm. Statistical differences between AS and HP groups were conducted with Weibull analysis. The fractured surfaces of zirconia specimens were observed using a field emission SEM and EDS to detect failure origins. Results The mean AS flexural strength values were significantly lower than those of HP counterparts. However, Weibull moduli expressing the reliability of HP groups were generally decreased although not significantly in comparison to their AS. The fracture of the AS specimens mostly originated from extrinsic CAM-milling defects, while the HP specimens were fractured from intrinsic subsurface or volume defects including pores, large grain clusters, inclusions, and corner-located critical flaws. Two high-translucent (5Y) zirconia groups were not affected in their strength and reliability after polishing, whereas one 5Y zirconia significantly increased its strength but significantly lowered its reliability. Significance The extrinsic and intrinsic strength-limiting defects should be considered in evaluating the flexural strength and reliability of dental CAD/CAM zirconia ceramics for full-contour restorations. For the materials tested in this study, more optimized processing of blanks and milling protocols of pre-sintered zirconia blanks should be developed including post-sintering surface finishing to reduce the flaw population regulating strength and reliability which will affect the survivability of dental zirconia prostheses. Abstract:The mechanical properties and low temperature degradation of 20 wt% alumina toughened 3 mol% yttria stabilized zirconia (ATZ) subjected to femtosecond laser surface texturing were evaluated. A directional fracture behavior accompanied by a significant reduction (>50%) of the biaxial flexural strength of the laser textured materials was observed for the investigated laser processing parameters. The directional fracture behavior was determined by both the direction of the laser induced thermal cracks and the loading condition during biaxial bending testing. The aging resistance of the laser surface textured ATZ was similar to that of the as-sintered group, indicating femtosecond laser texturing did not affect the aging performance of the material. Laser texturing of pre-sintered ATZ followed by sintering is a promising approach to alleviate the negative impact of laser texturing on the mechanical properties of the material. The flexural strength of the material obtained by this approach was increased to more than 700 MPa as compared to around 530 MPa for laser texturing of sintered ATZ, which was still much lower than that of the as-sintered group (1040 MPa).

Abstract:Low temperature aging (LTD) is an important factor of Y-TZP ceramic as artificial joint femoral head and dental restorative materials in vivo for long-term application. In this paper, the accelerated aging experiments on Y-TZP ceramics were conducted. The t-m phase transition is occurring from the surface to the inside during low temperature aging of Y-TZP ceramics. As content of phase transformation increases, thickness of phase transformation layer increases. While the content of surface monoclinic phase is less, the volume expansion and surface stress caused by phase transformation can make cracks and holes shrink or even close, then the flexural strength increase. As a large number of surface monoclinic phase was generated, due to there are a lot of microscopic defects in the phase transition layer, crystals loose, strength of grain boundary lower than that of not aging area and phase transformation layers fracture in the intergranular mode, that damages the flexural strength. Therefore, the flexural strength increase firstly and then decrease with the increase of surface monoclinic content.

Abstract:ObjectiveThis study investigated the effect of sintering temperatures on flexural strength, contrast ratio, and grain size of zirconia.Materials and MethodsZirconia specimens (Ceramill ZI, Amann Girrbach) were prepared in partially sintered state. Subsequently, the specimens were randomly divided into nine groups and sintered with different final sintering temperatures: 1,300°C, 1,350°C, 1,400°C, 1,450°C, 1,500°C, 1,550°C, 1,600°C, 1,650°C, or 1,700°C with 120 min holding time. Three-point flexural strength (N = 198; n = 22 per group) was measured according to ISO 6872: 2008. The contrast ratio (N = 90; n = 10 per group) was measured according to ISO 2471: 2008. Grain sizes and microstructure of different groups were investigated (N = 9, n = 1 per group) with scanning electron microscope. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA with Scheffé test and Weibull statistics (p < 0.05). Pearson correlation coefficient was calculated between either flexural strength or contrast ratio and sintering temperatures.ResultsThe highest flexural strength was observed in groups sintered between 1,400°C and 1,550°C. The highest Weibull moduli were obtained for zirconia sintered at 1,400°C and the lowest at 1,700°C. The contrast ratio and the grain size were higher with the higher sintering temperature. The microstructure of the specimens sintered above 1,650°C exhibited defects. Sintering temperatures showed a significant negative correlation with both the flexural strength (r = −0.313, p < 0.001) and the contrast ratio values (r = −0.96, p < 0.001).ConclusionsThe results of this study showed that the increase in sintering temperature increased the contrast ratio, but led to a negative impact on the flexural strength.Clinical RelevanceConsidering the flexural strength values and Weibull moduli, the sintering temperature for the zirconia tested in this study should not exceed 1,550°C.

Abstract:Background: Effects of the aging process on the flexural strength of Y-TZP and different Y-PSZ ceramics of different thicknesses were investigated. Methods: 300 disc-shaped samples (12 mm diameter, 0.8 and 1.5 mm thicknesses) were made from 5 different zirconia materials 3Y-TZP LA, 4Y-PSZ, 5Y-PSZ, 3 + 5Y-PSZ and 4 + 5Y-PSZ. Experimental groups were artificially aged in an autoclave at 134 °C, 2 bar pressure for 1 and 5 h; control groups were not subjected to any treatment. Microstructural analysis was conducted using Scanning Electron Microscopy, and X-Ray Diffraction analysis determined the crystalline phase content. The impact of aging on flexural strength was investigated with the use of the biaxial flexural strength test. Data were analyzed using three-way ANOVA tests with a significance level of p < 0.05, applying Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons. Results: Statistically significant differences in flexural strength were observed among the materials and the material thicknesses (p < 0.05), while there were no significant differences among the aging times (p > 0.05). The highest mean flexural strength values were recorded in the case of the 3 Y-TZP-1.5 mm-5 h group (744.1 ± 61.2 MPa), which was attributed to phase-transformation toughening. The lowest values were observed in the case of the 5 Y-PSZ-1.5 mm-5 h (338.3 ± 34.8 MPa) group. Conclusions: Both material type and thickness significantly affect the flexural strength of zirconia ceramics, whereas aging time does not; thus, material selection and thickness are crucial considerations for clinicians.
The Effect of Surface Treatments on Zirconia Bond Strength and Durability.

Abstract:To evaluate the effects of airborne particle abrasion (APA) combined with MDP-containing resin cement, a glass-ceramic spray deposition (GCSD) method on the shear bond strengths (SBSs) and durability of 3 mol% yttrium oxide-stabilized zirconia ceramic (3Y-TZP) compared with lithium disilicate glass ceramics (LDGC). 3Y-TZP disks were randomly treated as follows: for Group APA+MDP, 3Y-TZP was abrased using 50 μm Al2O3 particles under 0.1 Mpa and bonded with MDP-containing resin cement; for Group GCSD, 3Y-TZP was treated with the GCSD method, etched by 5% HF for 90 s, silanized and bonded with resin cement without MDP. Group LDGC was bonded as the Group GCSD. X-ray diffraction (XRD), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray detector (EDX) were used to analyze the surface chemical and micro-morphological changes of the ceramics before bonding. The bonded ceramic specimens were randomly divided into subgroups, and the SBSs were determined before and after 10,000 thermocycling. The SBSs were analyzed with a one-way ANOVA analysis. Failure modes were determined with optical microscopy and SEM. The XRD, ATR-FTIR and XPS results identified the formation of lithium disilicate and zirconium silicate on 3Y-TZP after GCSD. The SEM micrographs revealed that 3Y-TZP surfaces were roughened by APA, while 3Y-TZP with GCSD and LDGC surfaces could be etched by HF to be porous. The APA treatment combined with MDP-containing resin cement produced the high immediate zirconia shear bond strengths (SBSs: 37.41 ± 13.51 Mpa) that was similar to the SBSs of the LDGC (34.87 ± 11.02 Mpa, p > 0.05), but, after thermocycling, the former dramatically decreased (24.00 ± 6.86 Mpa, maximum reduction by 35.85%) and the latter exhibited the highest SBSs (30.72 ± 7.97 Mpa, minimum reduction by 11.9%). The 3Y-TZP with GCSD treatment displayed the lower zirconia SBSs before thermocycling (27.03 ± 9.76 Mpa, p < 0.05), but it was similar to the 3Y-TZP treated with APA and MDP containing resin cement after thermocycling (21.84 ± 7.03 vs. 24.00 ± 6.86 Mpa, p > 0.05). The APA combined with MDP-containing resin cement could achieve the high immediate zirconia SBSs of those of the LDGC, but it decreased significantly after thermocycling. The GCSD technique could yield the immediate zirconia SBSs similar to those of LDGC before thermocycling, and long-term zirconia SBSs were similar to those of 3Y-TZP treated with APA followed by MDP-containing resin cement after thermocycling. Hence, the GCSD technique could enrich zirconia surface treatments and is an alternative to zirconia surface pretreatment for 3Y-TZP bond durability.

Abstract:Conventional bonding technology suitable for silica-based ceramics is not applicable to zirconia, due to its polycrystalline phase composition, chemical stability, and acid corrosion resistance. The development of an effective treatment to improve its surface roughness and mechanical properties remains an unresolved problem. Therefore, to solve this problem, this in vitro study evaluated the changes in surface morphology and flexural strength of translucent monolithic zirconia surfaces treated with femtosecond laser technology. As-sintered translucent zirconia specimens were subjected to airborne particle abrasion and femtosecond laser treatments, while control group specimens received no treatment. After treatment, the roughness and morphology of the treated zirconia surfaces were examined. The flexural strength and X-ray diffraction of the treated specimens were measured and analyzed. Statistical inferential analysis included one-way analysis of variance at a set significance level of 5%. The surface roughness after femtosecond laser treatment was significantly improved when compared with the control group and the group that received the airborne particle abrasion treatment (p < 0.05). In comparison with the airborne particle abrasion group, the flexural strength of the group that received the femtosecond laser treatment was significantly improved (p < 0.05). The femtosecond laser approach using appropriate parameters enhanced the roughness of the zirconia without reducing its flexural strength; therefore, this approach offers potential for the treatment of zirconia surfaces.
