Abstract:The performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) strongly depends on the electron transport layer (ETL), perovskite absorber, hole transport layer (HTL), and their interfaces. Herein, the first approach to utilize ultrathin 2D titanium‐carbide MXenes (Ti3C2Tx quantum dots, TQD) by engineering the perovskite/TiO2 ETL interface and perovskite absorber and introducing Cu1.8S nanocrystals to perfect the Spiro‐OMeTAD HTL is represented. A significant hysteresis‐free power conversion efficiency improvement from 18.31% to 21.64% of PSCs is achieved after modifications with the enhanced short‐circuit current density, open‐circuit voltages, and fill factor. Various advanced characterizations, including femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, elucidate that the TQD/Cu1.8S significantly contribute to the improved crystalline quality of the perovskite film with its large grain size and improved electron/holes extraction efficiencies at perovskite/ETL and perovskite/HTL interfaces. Furthermore, the long‐time ambient and light stability of PSCs are largely boosted through the TQD and/or Cu1.8S nanocrystals doping, originating from the better crystallization of perovskite, suppressing the film aggregation and crystallization of HTL, and inhibiting the ultraviolet‐induced photocatalysis of the ETL. The findings highlight the TQD and Cu1.8S can act as a superfast electrons and holes tunnel for the optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Charge accumulation and charged defects at both bulk and buried heterojunction interfaces of perovskites are primarily related to the photovoltaic performance and shelf stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Moreover, detrimental defects distributing along the perovskite bottom side in contact with the tin oxide (SnO2) surface may exert unparalleled significance in charge extraction and transport. Most importantly, interfacial nonradiative recombination can also widely exist, which will seriously hamper efficiency of the related device. In this work, a multifunctional chemical bridge at the perovskite/SnO2 interface is devised through triggering an in situ polymerization strategy, by which cross-linked polymerizable 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (MAPS) monomers under the combination of temperature and initiators can form bulkier macropolymers (MAPS dimers). Detailed theoretical and experimental results reveal that the carbonyl groups (CO) of both MAPS monomers and MAPS dimers can chemically anchor to perovskite bottom side through a CO···Pb coordination bond interaction to regulate the film quality and the siloxane groups effectively couple with oxygen vacancies on the SnO2 film surface to facilitate its optoelectronic properties. Compared with the primitive MAPS monomer units, the resultant MAPS dimers simultaneously prevent interfacial charge accumulation and demonstrate a more benign energy level alignment to further augment photovoltaic performance of PSCs. Thus, the devices assembled under open-air conditions based on double-sided passivation deliver a decent photoelectronic performance with the champion efficiency of 20.94% accompanied by negligible hysteresis. Meanwhile, the unencapsulated targeted devices maintain 93.1% and 86.5% of their original efficiency after continuous 500 h thermal treatment and 500 h light illumination under open-circuit conditions, respectively.

Abstract:A mixed‐SAM strategy (Mx‐SAM) is proposed to enhance the adsorption energy of SAMs on the ITO surface, facilitate the formation of dense and humidity‐resistant hole‐selective layer (HSL) on substrates, the wide‐bandgap (1.68 eV) PSCs achieved a PCE of 22.63%, and the fabricated industrially‐compatible P/S‐TSCs through antisolvent‐assisted crystallization strategies achieve a remarkable efficiency of 28.07%. The antisolvent‐assisted spin‐coating still lags behind the thermal evaporation method in fabricating perovskite films atop industrially textured silicon wafers in making monolithic perovskite/silicon solar cells (P/S‐TSCs). The inhomogeneity of hole‐selective self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) often arises from the insufficient bonding between hygroscopic phosphonic acid anchors and metal oxide. To address this, a mixed‐SAM strategy (Mx‐SAM) is proposed to enhance the adsorption energy of SAMs on the ITO surface, facilitate the formation of dense and humidity‐resistant hole‐selective layer (HSL) on substrates, and improve hole transport capabilities. With the aid of the Mx‐SAM strategy, the optimized wide‐bandgap PSCs achieved an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.63% with an exceptionally high fill factor (FF) of 86.67% using the 1.68 eV perovskite. Moreover, they exhibited enhanced stability under damp‐heat conditions (ISOS‐D‐3, 85% RH, 85 °C) with a T90 of 900 h for encapsulated PSCs, representing one of the best performances for wide‐bandgap PSCs. When further extending the Mx‐SAM strategy to making P/S‐TSCs using silicon wafers from industry, a remarkable efficiency of 28.07% is reached while upholding outstanding reproducibility. This strategy holds significant promise for the feasibility of fabricating industrially‐compatible P/S‐TSCs.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with mesoporous TiO2 (mp‐TiO2) as the electron transport material attain power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) above 22%; however, their poor long‐term stability is a critical issue that must be resolved for commercialization. Herein, it is demonstrated that the long‐term operational stability of mp‐TiO2 based PSCs with PCE over 20% is achieved by isolating devices from oxygen and humidity. This achievement attributes to systematic understanding of the critical role of oxygen in the degradation of PSCs. PSCs exhibit fast degradation under controlled oxygen atmosphere and illumination, which is accompanied by iodine migration into the hole transport material (HTM). A diffusion barrier at the HTM/perovskite interface or encapsulation on top of the devices improves the stability against oxygen under light soaking. Notably, a mp‐TiO2 based PSC with a solid encapsulation retains 20% efficiency after 1000 h of 1 sun (AM1.5G including UV) illumination in ambient air.

Abstract:Long-term durability is critically important for the commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The ionic character of the perovskite and the hydrophilicity of commonly used additives for the hole-transporting layer (HTL), such as lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (Li-TFSI) and tert-butylpyridine (tBP), render PSCs prone to moisture attack, compromising their long-term stability. Here we introduce a trifluoromethylation strategy to overcome this drawback and to boost the PSC's solar to electric power conversion efficiency (PCE). We employ 4-(trifluoromethyl)benzylammonium iodide (TFMBAI) as an amphiphilic modifier for interfacial defect mitigation and 4-(trifluoromethyl)pyridine (TFP) as an additive to enhance the HTL's hydrophobicity. Surface treatment of the triple-cation perovskite with TFMBAI largely suppressed the nonradiative charge carrier recombination, boosting the PCE from 20.9% to 23.9% and suppressing hysteresis, while adding TFP to the HTL enhanced the PCS's resistance to moisture while maintaining its high PCE. Abstract:UV-induced degradation and parasitic ultraviolet (UV) absorption by the "sun-facing" carrier transport layer in a perovskite cell hinders stability and electrical performance when the perovskite cell is a top cell for a Si-based tandem. In this work, we tackle these issues by applying textured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films that incorporate a down-shifting material (Ba,Sr)2SiO4:Eu2+ micron phosphor on the front of monolithic perovskite/silicon tandem cells. This film serves multiple purposes: antireflective control for the top cell, light trapping in the Si cell, as well as absorbing UV and re-emitting green light with high quantum yield. When applied onto a 4 cm2 monolithic perovskite/silicon tandem solar cell, the power conversion efficiency was improved from 20.1% (baseline device without any antireflective film) to 22.3% (device with an antireflective film but without the phosphors) and to 23.1% (device with down-shifting phosphor-incorprated antireflective film). The steady-state efficiency of 23.0% and a high fill factor (FF) of 81% achieved by the champion device are the highest values to date for a monolithic perovskite/silicon tandem that uses a homojunction silicon bottom cell. Moreover, results of a continuous UV irradiation test show that this composite down-shifting antireflection film significantly enhances the UV stability for the tandem device. This work demonstrates an elegant approach for improving the efficiency and stability for larger-area perovskite/silicon tandems.

Abstract:A functionalized interfacial passivation layer, a kind of self‐assembled monolayer, is developed to modify TiO2/perovskite interfaces. With the synergistic contribution of defect passivation and charge transfer improvement, as high as 24.8% efficiency with negligible hysteresis is achieved for TiO2‐based planer perovskite solar cells (PSCs), meanwhile, the perovskite films exhibit excellent moisture stability and the PSC devices have excellent operational stability. Self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) with unique ordered structures and varied anchoring groups have emerged as an excellent interfacial strategy for perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, 3‐carboxypropyl‐triphenyl phosphonium bromide with the participation of the fullerene derivative [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid (PCBA) as functionalized C‐PCBA SAM, is introduced to stably modify the TiO2/perovskite interface. In the meantime, with strong fullerene cage–iodide interaction, ordered C‐PCBA SAM can passivate interfacial defects and improve the electron transportation. A high efficiency of 24.8% and stabilized power output of 23.9%, are achieved with negligible hysteresis, which is among the best performances for TiO2 planar PSCs. This modified cell also exhibits significantly improved stabilities under different testing conditions; non‐encapsulated devices can maintain 95% of initial efficiency after 1000 h thermal stability testing at 85 °C and 85% after 700 h continuous illumination (≈100 mW cm−2) and maximum‐power‐point tracking. This work provides valuable inspiration for developing highly efficient and stable PSCs by using a convenient SAM reconfiguration strategy.

Abstract:Abstract The perovskite solar cell has emerged rapidly in the field of photovoltaics as it combines the merits of low cost, high efficiency, and excellent mechanical flexibility for versatile applications. However, there are significant concerns regarding its operational stability and mechanical robustness. Most of the previously reported approaches to address these concerns entail separate engineering of perovskite and charge-transporting layers. Herein we present a holistic design of perovskite and charge-transporting layers by synthesizing an interpenetrating perovskite/electron-transporting-layer interface. This interface is reaction-formed between a tin dioxide layer containing excess organic halide and a perovskite layer containing excess lead halide. Perovskite solar cells with such interfaces deliver efficiencies up to 22.2% and 20.1% for rigid and flexible versions, respectively. Long-term (1000 h) operational stability is demonstrated and the flexible devices show high endurance against mechanical-bending (2500 cycles) fatigue. Mechanistic insights into the relationship between the interpenetrating interface structure and performance enhancement are provided based on comprehensive, advanced, microscopic characterizations. This study highlights interface integrity as an important factor for designing efficient, operationally-stable, and mechanically-robust solar cells.

Surface Reconstruction for Efficient and Stable Monolithic Perovskite/Silicon Tandem Solar Cells with Greatly Suppressed Residual Strain

Abstract:Despite the swift rise in power conversion efficiency (PCE) to more than 32%, the instability of perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells is still one of the key obstacles to practical application and is closely related to the residual strain of perovskite films. Herein, a simple surface reconstruction strategy is developed to achieve a global incorporation of butylammonium cations at both surface and bulk grain boundaries by post‐treating perovskite films with a mixture of N, N‐dimethylformamide and n‐butylammonium iodide in isopropanol solvent, enabling strain‐free perovskite films with simultaneously reduced defect density, suppressed ion migration and improved energy level alignment. As a result, the corresponding single‐junction perovskite solar cells yield a champion PCE of 21.8%, while maintaining 100% and 81% of their initial PCEs without encapsulation after storage for over 2500 h in N2 and 1800 h in air, respectively. Remarkably, we further demonstrate a certified stabilized PCE of 29.0% for the monolithic perovskite/silicon tandems based on tunnel oxide passivated contacts. The unencapsulated tandem device retains 86.6% of its initial performance after 306 hours at maximum power point (MPP) tracking under continuous xenon‐lamp illumination without filtering ultraviolet (in air, 20–35 °C, 25–75%RH, most often ∼60%RH). Interfacial Crosslinking for Efficient and Stable Planar TiO2 Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:The buried interface between the electron transport layer (ETL) and the perovskite layer plays a crucial role in enhancing the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of n-i-p type perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this study, the interface between the chemical bath deposited (CBD) titanium oxide (TiO2) ETL and the perovskite layer using multi-functional potassium trifluoromethyl sulfonate (SK) is modified. Structural and elemental analyses reveal that the trifluoromethyl sulfonate serves as a crosslinker between the TiO2 and the perovskite layer, thus improving the adhesion of the perovskite to the TiO2 ETL through strong bonding of the ─CF3 and ─SO3 - terminal groups. Furthermore, the multi-functional modifiers reduced interface defects and suppressed carrier recombination in the PSCs. Consequently, devices with a champion PCE of 25.22% and a fill factor (FF) close to 85% is achieved, marking the highest PCE and FF observed for PSCs based on CBD TiO2. The unencapsulated device maintained 81.3% of its initial PCE after operating for 1000 h.
Dual-Interface-Reinforced Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells for Enhanced Performance and Mechanical Reliability

Abstract:Two key interfaces in flexible perovskite solar cells (f-PSCs) are mechanically reinforced simultaneously: one between the electron-transport layer (ETL) and the 3D metal-halide perovskite (MHP) thin film using self-assembled monolayer (SAM), and the other between the 3D-MHP thin film and the hole-transport layer (HTL) using an in situ grown low-dimensional (LD) MHP capping layer. The interfacial mechanical properties are measured and modeled. This rational interface engineering results in the enhancement of not only the mechanical properties of both interfaces but also their optoelectronic properties holistically. As a result, the new class of dual-interface-reinforced f-PSCs has an unprecedented combination of the following three important performance parameters: high power-conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.03% (with reduced hysteresis), improved operational stability of 1000 h T-90 (duration at 90% initial PCE retained), and enhanced mechanical reliability of 10 000 cycles n(88) (number of bending cycles at 88% initial PCE retained). The scientific underpinnings of these synergistic enhancements are elucidated.

Abstract:An approach is proposed to modify perovskite surface utilizing mixed solvents and metallocene materials. The mixed solvent efficiently exposes trap defects on the perovskite surface, while the high electronegativity metallocene material effectively passivates these defects, significantly enhancing carrier transport efficiency. A certified PCE exceeding 30% is obtain on perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells. The presence of a high density of defects at the perovskite/electron transport layer (ETL) interface results in significant nonradiative recombination losses, thus impeding the efficiency enhancement of perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells (TSCs). In this investigation, a metallocene‐based molecule, cobalt (III) dichlorophene hexafluorophosphate (CcPF6), is employed for perovskite surface passivation. To maximize its efficacy, the molecule is dissolved in a mixed solvent of acetonitrile and chlorobenzene, leading to the reconstruction of the perovskite surface and effective passivation of surface defects. This modification strategy substantially enhances the overall efficiency of perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells by mitigating the issue of low fill factor resulting from non‐uniform coating of the top perovskite layer on the textured silicon bottom cell. Leveraging a double‐sided textured silicon heterojunction (HJT) bottom cell, a certified power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 30.43% for a monolithic perovskite/silicon TSC (1.00 cm2) is achieved, featuring an open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of 1.93 V and a fill factor (FF) of 78.43%. After storage in the drying cabinet (5% humidity at 20 °C) for 1000 h, the device retains 94.27% of its initial performance.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have developed rapidly in recent years, and the instability limits its commercialization. Non-radiative recombination caused by defects and water stability affect the device stability. Here we introduce an organic silane additive, tetramethoxysilane (TMOS), which can reduce the non-radiative recombination and prevent the water erosion. The methoxy group in TMOS can combine with Pb2+ of perovskite to passivate undercoordinated Pb2+ defects and reduce non-radiative recombination. Under a certain humidity, the hydrolyzed product SiO2 can occupy the grain boundary sites to prevent the erosion of water molecules, slow down the degradation of perovskite, and improve the crystal phase stability of perovskite. The PCE of the device increases from 17.13% to 20.12%. After 400 h at 50% relative humidity (RH), the PSC with 2% TMOS can maintain the efficiency of 90%, while the efficiency of the control group quickly dropped to only 70% of the initial.

Molecular Synergistic Effect for High Efficiency Monolithic Perovskite/Perovskite/Silicon Triple‐Junction Tandem Solar Cells

Abstract:The molecular synergistic effect enabled by piperazine‐1‐carboxamide hydrochloride and 1,3‐propane‐diammonium iodide facilitates excellent energy level alignment and reduces non‐radiative recombination losses and light‐induced phase segregation. The target perovskite/perovskite/silicon triple‐junction tandem solar cell obtains an open‐circuit voltage of 3.07 V and a champion power conversion efficiency of 25.2% (for a 1.035 cm2 aperture area). Perovskite/perovskite/silicon triple‐junction tandem solar cells (TSCs) hold promise for high power conversion efficiencies (PCE). However, the efficiency is still relatively low due to the non‐radiative recombination losses in wide‐bandgap top cells. These losses, attributed to the interface defect states and energy level mismatches, present considerable challenges to realizing high‐performance and stable TSCs. Here, the molecular synergistic effect (MSE) is exploited to passivate interface in 1.95 eV top cells. Piperazine‐1‐carboxamide hydrochloride (PCACl) is combined, which possesses strong dipole moments and passivating functional groups that can bind with two neighboring uncoordinated lead ions and form hydrogen bonds with halide atoms at perovskite surface, with 1,3‐propane‐diammonium iodide, which can reduce interface recombination through field‐effect passivation. The MSE enabled by PCACl and PDAI2 facilitates excellent energy level alignment and reduces non‐radiative recombination losses and light‐induced phase segregation. Finally, the target perovskite/perovskite/silicon triple‐junction TSC obtains an open‐circuit voltage of 3.07 V and a champion PCE of 25.2% (for a 1.035 cm2 aperture area).

Abstract:The interface defects and energy barrier between perovskite and electron transport layer (ETL) severely hinder the further improvement of the efficiency and stability of the perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Therefore, there is an urgent desire to develop multifunctional interface modulators to manage the interface between perovskite and ETL. Here, a multifunctional bottom-up double-layer interface modulation strategy is developed, that is, 2,2′-[[12,13-Bis(2-butyloctyl)− 12,13-dihydro-3,9-dinonylbisthieno[2'',3'':4′,5′]thieno[2′,3′:4,5]pyrrolo[3,2-e:2′,3′-g][2,1,3]benzothiadiazole-2,10-diyl]bis[methylidyne(5,6-chloro-3-oxo-1 H-indene-2,1(3 H)-diylidene)]]bis[propanedinitrile] (BTP-eC9) is combined in the SnO2/perovskite interface to achieve high efficiency and outstanding stability of PSCs. The BTP-eC9 can effectively prevent the detrimental contact between the FTO and perovskite and construct two electron transport paths by formatting the cascade energy level structure, which can eliminate the probability of carrier recombination and improve the interfacial carrier transfer. Chemically, BTP-eC9 can not only passivate the uncoordinated Sn ions, showing high conductivity and large photo-generated carrier transmission efficiency, but also can effectively passivate the underlying perovskite defects through a spontaneous bottom-up passivation process and improve the nucleation and crystallization kinetics of perovskite films. Based on the above efficient synergy, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of up to 23.10% was obtained and it retains 90% of its original PCE after 8000 h in the ambient atmosphere without any encapsulation by the two-step method. In addition, the champion PCE of 23.75% with ultrahigh open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 1.25 V was achieved by the one-step method and this VOC is the highest value of a perovskite film with a band gap of approximately 1.60 eV, demonstrating the effectiveness and universality of this strategy. This research guides design methods of the ETL to raise the PCE of PSCs by interfacial engineering.

Abstract:Perovskite materials owing to their unique properties for photovoltaic applications, widely have been considered by researchers as a desirable candidate for solar cell devices. State-of-the-Art perovskite solar cells (PSCs) recorded a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.7%. Herein, we focused on improving both the stability and photovoltaic performance of PSCs via an interface engineering at the mesoporous titanium dioxide (mp-TiO2)/perovskite interface. We employed 8-Oxychinoline (8-Oxin) material to tailor the surface of mp-TiO2 and prepare a favorable plane for deposition of perovskite. The 8-Oxin material reduced charge transfer resistance (Rct) and increased charge recombination resistance (Rrec) in the PSCs, suggesting an effective defects passivation at the interface of mp-TiO2 and perovskite layers and a reduction in the trap-assisted recombination, which is consistent with the PL results. Our method recorded a champion PCE of 19.03% for PSCs, higher than a PCE of 14.91% obtained for control PSCs. Notably, the 8-Oxin improved the wettability of mp-TiO2 and affected perovskite grain growth, leading to a more compact and smooth perovskite layer. The 8-Oxin material improved the humidity resistance of PSCs due to diminished surface' paths for the reaction with humidity and suppressed surplus PbI2 in the corresponding perovskite layer.

Abstract:The inherent dynamic behavior observed in 2D‐3D interfaces in perovskite solar cells (PSC), driven by ion diffusion and migration, poses a significant challenge in establishing a stable passivation and barrier interface that can fulfill the device's complete lifecycle requirements. In this work, we construct large sterically hindered one-dimensional (1D) perovskite crystals integrated with the perovskite surface and observed their evolution during accelerated aging for the first time. The results show that this strong interfacial bonding not only effectively passivates surface defects but also prevents interface reconstruction due to migration, even under elevated temperatures. Moreover, it serving as an effective barrier can significantly suppress the interdiffusion between the copper electrode and the perovskite layer. Resultantly, our approach attained a remarkable efficiency of 23.3% via a scalable coating process in FA 0.3 MA 0.7 PbI 3 PSC device. Notably, these devices exhibited significantly enhanced operational stability (T 95 ≈1200 h, 55 ± 5 °C) and thermal stability (T 90 ≈700 h, 85 °C).

Abstract:With a certified efficiency as high as 25.2%, perovskite has taken the crown as the highest efficiency thin film solar cell material. Unfortunately, serious instability issues must be resolved before perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are commercialized. Aided by theoretical calculation, an appropriate multifunctional molecule, 2,2‐difluoropropanediamide (DFPDA), is selected to ameliorate all the instability issues. Specifically, the carbonyl groups in DFPDA form chemical bonds with Pb2+ and passivate under‐coordinated Pb2+ defects. Consequently, the perovskite crystallization rate is reduced and high‐quality films are produced with fewer defects. The amino groups not only bind with iodide to suppress ion migration but also increase the electron density on the carbonyl groups to further enhance their passivation effect. Furthermore, the fluorine groups in DFPDA form both an effective barrier on the perovskite to improve its moisture stability and a bridge between the perovskite and HTL for effective charge transport. In addition, they show an effective doping effect in the HTL to improve its carrier mobility. With the help of the combined effects of these groups in DFPDA, the PSCs with DFPDA additive achieve a champion efficiency of 22.21% and a substantially improved stability against moisture, heat, and light.

Abstract:Poor interfacial contact and residual stress in perovskite solar cells (PSC) are known to reduce device stability and photoelectric performance. Herein, a novel strategy was developed by embedding TiO 2 NPs into CH 3 COO − (AC − )-functionalized MXene (MX, Ti 3 C 2 ) as an electron transport layer (ETL). The strong interaction between the AC − of MX and Pb 2+ of perovskite reinforces the interfacial contact between the ETL and perovskite layer, releasing harmful lattice strain. Meanwhile, charge accumulation and non-radiative carrier recombination at the interface were effectively suppressed. As a result, the carbon-based CsPbI 2 Br PSC achieved a champion efficiency of 15.48 %, and the large-area (≥1 cm 2 ) device also demonstrated high efficiency (13.06 %). The CsPbIBr 2 and CsPbI 3 counterparts yielded high efficiencies of 11.22 % and 14.59 %, respectively. Moreover, the devices showed excellent environmental stability, maintaining 91 % of original efficiency after being stored in air at a relative humidity of about 20–30 % for 1250 h. It also retained 85 % of its original efficiency when stored at 85 °C in a nitrogen atmosphere for > 400 h.
