Abstract:An optical phased array (OPA) on a chip, as a novel non-mechanical beam steering technique, has attracted much attention in various applications. However, due to the challenges in fabrication and the limited transparency window of the material for visible wavelengths, current OPAs are mainly focuses on the infrared wavelengths. Despite the progress, the visible light OPAs remain the challenges to not only simultaneously work in blue, green and red light, but also implement beam steering in two dimensions for the single-wavelength. In this paper, an 8-channel broadband OPA is demonstrated, which enables two-dimensional beam steering in visible light. Along the longitudinal direction, the beam steering angle of 0.7° at 585 nm is achieved by tuning phase shifts. Along the transverse direction, the demonstrated OPA implements beam steering angle of 4.49° at 585 nm by tuning polarization degrees and 25.97° at 488–610 nm by tuning wavelengths. Therefore, the demonstrated OPA holds significant promise for commercial applications such as visual projection and free-space optical communications.

Abstract:Optical phased arrays (OPAs) with high speed, low power consumption, and low insertion loss are appealing for many applications, such as light detection and ranging, free-space communication, image projection, and imaging. These OPAs can be achieved by fully leveraging the high electro-optic modulation speed, low driving voltage, and low optical loss of integrated lithium niobate (LN) photonics. Here we present an integrated LN OPA operating in the near-infrared regime, demonstrating a 24 * 8° two-dimensional beam steering, a far-field beam spot with full-width at half-maximum of 2 * 0.6°, and a side lobe suppression level of 10 dB. Additionally, our OPA's phase modulator features a half wave voltage of 6 V. Our OPA opens the door of high speed, low power-consumption, and low loss integrated LN OPAs for various applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate a silicon $1 imes 64$ optical phased array by using carrier-depletion-based phase shifters. The 5-mm-long phase shifter exhibits an electro-optic bandwidth of 700 MHz, a modulation efficiency of 2.3 V.cm, and an ultra-low power consumption of < 0.45 nW/$oldsymbol {pi }$ . A steering range of ±18° is realized in the phased-array axis by tuning the phase of each antenna. Besides, the beam steering in the other (wavelength-controlled) axis by tuning the wavelength achieves a dispersion efficiency of 0.17° /nm. Although the carrier-depletion effect induces a nonuniform optical amplitude distribution among the antenna array, the OPA chip is still able to form high-quality far-field beam patterns with side lobe suppression ratios of $oldsymbol {sim }10$ dB. Our measurement and simulation results indicate that the carrier-depletion-based OPA is a promising candidate for future high-speed and power-efficient solid-state Lidars.

Abstract:High-performance integrated optical phased arrays (OPAs) are crucial for building up energy-efficient solid-state beam steering systems on a chip. This work demonstrates a first heterogeneous III-V/Si phase-shifter based OPA that utilizes III-V multiple quantum well (MQW) structures to provide superior performance. Demonstrated phase shifters have Vpi of only 0.45 V and residual amplitude modulation (RAM) of only 0.15 dB at 1550 nm for 2pi phase shift with low power consumption of less than 3 nW, which are, to the best our knowledge, the state-of-the-art performance with a record low operating voltage, low power consumption, and low RAM in on-chip OPAs. Their bandwidth is >1 GHz across 200 nm wavelength range. Wavelength tuning is used to demonstrate two-dimensional beam steering with a field of view of 28x51 degree in the 32-channel OPA with an emitter-array pitch of 2 um. Side-mode suppression ratio of 16 dB is also achieved. The high-performance heterogeneous OPA paves the way for scalable and efficient on-chip beam steerers with large steering range and high beam quality.

Abstract:Abstract Optical phased arrays (OPAs) with the ability of dynamic beam-steering hold great promise for industrial applications. Although they potentially offer high-resolution, high-speed and wide-angle beam-steering, 2D beam-steering has only been achieved by 1D OPAs with wavelength-tuning or by 2D OPAs containing enormous numbers of elements, thereby significantly increasing the system complexity and power consumption. Here we demonstrate a liquid-crystal-tunable Bragg-reflector waveguide outcoupler integrated with a 1D OPA. The output beam angle is controlled by an electric-field applied to the liquid crystal between the Bragg-mirrors, independently from steering along a second axis with the OPA. Our proof-of-concept demonstration with an 8-channel OPA shows 2D beam-steering with a 16° × 15° field-of-view and 12 ms × 14 μs time-response. Our approach opens a practical way for scalable OPAs capable of single wavelength 2D beam-steering, as well as demonstrating a strategy for the integration of liquid crystal materials with silicon photonics.

Abstract:Optical phased arrays (OPAs) implemented in integrated photonic circuits could enable a variety of 3D sensing, imaging, illumination, and ranging applications, and their convergence in new LIDAR technology. However, current integrated OPA approaches do not scale - in control complexity, power consumption, and optical efficiency - to the large aperture sizes needed to support medium to long range LIDAR. We present the serpentine optical phased array (SOPA), a new OPA concept that addresses these fundamental challenges and enables architectures that scale up to large apertures. The SOPA is based on a serially interconnected array of low-loss grating waveguides and supports fully passive, two-dimensional (2D) wavelength-controlled beam steering. A fundamentally space-efficient design that folds the feed network into the aperture also enables scalable tiling of SOPAs into large apertures with a high fill-factor. We experimentally demonstrate the first SOPA, using a 1450 - 1650 nm wavelength sweep to produce 16,500 addressable spots in a 27x610 array. We also demonstrate, for the first time, far-field interference of beams from two separate OPAs on a single silicon photonic chip, as an initial step towards long-range computational imaging LIDAR based on novel active aperture synthesis schemes.

Abstract:Integrated optical phased arrays (OPAs) have attracted significant interest to steer laser beams for applications including free-space communications, holography, and light detection and ranging. Although many methods have been proposed to suppress grating lobes, OPAs have also been limited by the trade-off between field of view (FOV) and beamforming efficiency. Here, we propose a metasurface empowered port-selected OPA (POPA), an OPA steered by port selection, which is implemented by an aperiodic waveguide array with an average pitch less than the wavelength and phase controlled by coupling among waveguides. A metasurface layer above the POPA was designed to increase wide FOV steering, aliasing-free by polarization division. As a result, we experimentally demonstrate beam scanning over a ± 41.04 ° × 7.06 ° FOV. The aliasing-free POPA with expanded FOV shows successful incorporation of the waveguide-based OPA technique with an emerging metasurface design, indicating much exploration in concepts for integrated photonic devices.

Abstract:We demonstrate solid-state optical beam-steering utilizing polymer waveguides as edge emitters to form optical phased arrays (OPAs) for operation at 1550 nm. Waveguide spacing below the wavelength is hindered in low index contrast OPAs by cross-coupling, leading to the formation of unwanted grating lobes in the far field. We employ non-uniform spacing between the 16 channels of the OPAs to suppress the grating lobes and improve the unambiguous beam steering range. Three different aperiodic layouts are fabricated and experimentally tested. Within a steering range of ±10° we achieve an average beamwidth of 0.45° with an ordered spacing layout, and 0.52° and 0.69° with a randomized spacing layout of and average spacing, respectively. With the latter we show suppression of the sidelobes of >11 dB and >6 dB within a steering range of ±5° and ±8°, accordingly. Power consumption of 1.28 mW/ per channel is achieved thanks to the excellent thermo-optic (TO) coefficient of the polymer platform. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to demonstrate polymer-based OPAs with aperiodic spacing.

Abstract:An optical phased array (OPA) is a promising non-mechanical technique for beam steering in solid-state light detection and ranging systems. The performance of the OPA largely depends on the phase shifter, which affects power consumption, insertion loss, modulation speed, and footprint. However, for a thermo-optic phase shifter, achieving good performance in all aspects is challenging due to trade-offs among these aspects. In this work, we propose and demonstrate two types of energy-efficient optical phase shifters that overcome these trade-offs and achieve a well-balanced performance in all aspects. Additionally, the proposed round-spiral phase shifter is robust in fabrication and fully compatible with deep ultraviolet (DUV) processes, making it an ideal building block for large-scale photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Using the high-performance phase shifter, we propose a periodic OPA with low power consumption, whose maximum electric power consumption within the field of view is only 0.33 W. Moreover, we designed Gaussian power distribution in both the azimuthal ( ) and polar ( ) directions and experimentally achieved a large sidelobe suppression ratio of 15.1 and 25 dB, respectively.

Abstract:We present an integrated optical phased array (OPA) which embeds in-line optical amplifiers and phase modulators to provide beam-forming capability with gain and beam steering in the 1465–1590 nm wavelength range. We demonstrate up to 21.5 dB net on-chip gain and up to 35.5 mW optical output power. The OPA circuit is based on an InP photonic integration platform and features the highest measured on-chip gain and output power level recorded in an active OPA (i.e., with amplification), to the best of our knowledge. Furthermore, the OPA enables the independent control of both amplitude and phase in its arms and through this we demonstrate programmable beam shaping for two cases. First, we carried out a Gaussian apodization of the power distribution profile in the OPA emitter waveguides, leading to 19.8 dB sidelobe suppression in the far-field beam, which is the highest value recorded for active OPAs, and then we demonstrated beam forming of 0th, 1st, and 2nd order 1D Hermite–Gaussian beams in free-space.

Abstract:Fast scanning speed and low-power consumption are becoming progressively more and more important in realizing high-performance chiplet optical phased arrays (OPAs). Here, we successfully demonstrated integrated OPAs with multiple waveguides channels based on thin-film lithium niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) platform. Specifically, two lithium niobate (LN) OPA chips have been implemented with 32 and 48 channels LN waveguides, respectively, enabled by electro-optic modulations, which showcases the low power consumption (1.11 nJ/π) and fast operation speed (14.4 ns), showing obvious advantage of the LNOI platform over others. As results, we experimentally achieved a beam steering with a 62.2° × 8.8° field of view (FOV) and a beam divergence of 2.4° × 1.2° for 32 channels, and a FOV of 40° × 8.8° and a beam divergence of 0.33° × 1.8° for 48 channels. This work also demonstrates the feasibility of LNOI platform in scalable OPA chips.

Abstract:Abstract Optical phased array (OPA) devices are being actively investigated to develop compact solid-state beam scanners, which are essential in fields such as LiDAR, free-space optical links, biophotonics, etc. Based on the unique nature of perfluorinated polymers, we propose a polymer waveguide OPA with the advantages of low driving power and high optical throughput. Unlike silicon photonic OPAs, the polymer OPAs enable sustainable phase distribution control during beam scanning, which reduces the burden of beamforming. Moreover, by incorporating a tunable wavelength laser comprising a polymer waveguide Bragg reflector, two-dimensional beam scanning is demonstrated, which facilitates the development of laser-integrated polymeric OPA beam scanners.

Abstract:Chip-scale optical phased arrays could enable compact beam steering and LIDAR for autonomous vehicles, precision robotics, and free-space optical communications. Because these applications demand wide angle beam steering as well as high optical power in the output beam, a natural design choice would be to space the array emitters at a half-wavelength pitch, as is common in radiofrequency phased arrays. Optical phased arrays, however, unlike RF phased arrays, have been limited by the tradeoff between field of view (i.e. angle steering) and beamforming efficiency (i.e. optical power in the output beam). This tradeoff exists because optical phased arrays rely on waveguides as emitters, which suffer from strong crosstalk when placed in close proximity relative to their mode size. Here we overcome these limitations and demonstrate a platform for optical phased arrays with 180° field of view, where more than 72 percent of the power is carried in a single diffraction-limited beam even when steered up to 60° off-axis. Our platform leverages high index-contrast, dispersion-engineered waveguides spaced one half-wavelength apart without incurring crosstalk.

Abstract:Optical phased arrays (OPAs) encounter a formidable trade-off between performance and design due to the intricacies of their system. Here, we propose a cascaded domain engineering OPA structure via domain engineering. A six-layer cascaded domain engineering OPA prototype, consisting of 32 array elements, was designed, fabricated, and characterized. In contrast to the existing OPA scheme, only one control electronics is used to control the entire array elements, regardless of the number of array elements. The speed of beam steering is demonstrated up to 3 MHz in the bulk LiNbO3 (LN) demo, based on the fast response of the electro-optic crystal. Meantime, by demonstrating dynamic beam steering continually, its capability of continuous scanning and continually active phase tunability has been verified. The utilization of such cascaded domain engineering techniques provides a promising approach to OPA and related applications.

Abstract:Optical phased arrays (OPA) with high integration, fast speed, low power consumption, and high steering resolution are critical components in the emerging photonic integrated circuit (PIC), LiDAR, free space optical communication, 3D printing, and so on. According to the OPA working principle, its function is generally achieved by independently controlling the phase of the array elements. In practice, this presents a major challenge to overcome critical trade-offs of the element numbers, the control electronics, and the power consumption. Here, we give an alternative OPA solution to overcome this technical limitation, in the form of a cascaded periodically poled electro-optical crystal structure. Compared with the existing OPA scheme, only one control electronics is used to control the entire array elements in the current proposal, regardless of the number of array elements, implying higher integration and lower power consumption. With the help of the fast response properties of electro-optic crystal materials, a high-speed and high-resolution beam steering device is demonstrated. Simulating results show that the angular resolution can be improved by several orders of magnitude when the number of the cascaded-layer increases. An OPA prototype of a 6-layer cascaded periodically poled LiNbO$_3$ (cascaded-PPLN) was designed, fabricated, and characterized. The experiment that observed beam deflection in cascaded-PPLN OPA agrees well with the simulation results. Meantime, by demonstrating dynamic beam steering continually, its capability of continuous scanning and continually active phase tunability has been verified. Therefore, this cascaded periodically poled electro-optical crystal OPA offers a feasible direction of miniaturization and low power consumption for the optical system, such as the PIC system.

Abstract:Over the last decade, Optical Phased Arrays (OPA) have been extensively studied, targeting applications such as Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) systems, holographic displays, atmospheric monitoring and free space communications. Leveraging the maturity of the silicon photonics platform, the usual mechanical based beam steering system could be replaced by an integrated OPA, significantly reducing the cost and size of the LiDAR while improving its performance (scanning speed, power efficiency, resolution) thanks to solid state beam steering. However, the realization of an OPA that meets the specifications of a LiDAR system (low divergence and single output beam) is not trivial. Targeting the realization of a complete LiDAR system, the technical challenges inherent to the development of high performance OPAs have been studied at CEA LETI. In particular, efficient genetic algorithms have been developed for the calibration of high channel count OPAs as well as an advanced measurement setup compatible with wafer-scale OPA characterization.

Increasing the Field-of-View Radiation Efficiency of Optical Phased Antenna Arrays

Abstract:Silicon photonics in conjunction with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) fabrication has greatly enhanced the development of integrated optical phased arrays. This facilitates a dynamic control of light in a compact form factor that enables the synthesis of arbitrary complex wavefronts in the infrared spectrum. We numerically demonstrate a large-scale two dimensional silicon-based optical phased array (OPA) composed of nanoantennas with circular gratings that are balanced in power and aligned in phase, required for producing elegant radiation patterns in the far field. For a wavelength of 1.55$\mu m$, we optmize two antennas for the OPA exhibting an upward radiation efficiency as high as 90%, with almost 6.8% of optical power concentrated in the field of view. Additionally, we believe that the proposed OPAs can be easily fabricated and would have the ability of generating complex holographic images, rendering them an attractive candidate for a wide range of applications like LiDAR sensors, optical trapping, optogenetic stimulation and augmented-reality displays.

Abstract:Optical phased arrays (OPAs) have attracted much attention due to its potential applications in a series of advanced technologies such as LIDAR, free space communication. OPAs have many advantages, such as non-mechanical, arbitrary beam shaping and control. It has been proved that it is feasible to process OPAs with integrated optical platform. Among all the integrated optical platforms, silicon photonic platform has attracted the attention of most researchers and has achieved many important results. However, silicon photonic platform is very sensitive to processing errors and is not suitable for high power input because of its strong nonlinear effect. Silicon nitride (Si3N4) has become a research hotspot in integrated photonics due to its weak nonlinear effect and low-loss. Compared with silicon, because of its lower refractive index contrast, it is more tolerant to process changes and because of its weak nonlinear effect, it can allow higher power input, which is very suitable for processing OPAs. In this work, we propose an OPA based on 200 nm silicon nitride platform to control the two-dimensional direction of the beam by wavelength tuning. The system is simulated by FDTD solution. Finally, the scanning range of 46°×12° is realized in the wavelength range of 1500 nm to 1600 nm. The 3 dB size of a single spot is 1.8°×0.5° and a total of 600 scanning points can be obtained. This OPA can find applications in laser scanning, spectroscopy, demultiplexing and spectral pulse shaping applications.
