Abstract:The design of structures submitted to aerodynamic loads usually requires the development of specific computational models considering fluid-structure interactions. Models using structural frame elements are developed in several relevant applications such as the design of advanced aircraft wings, wind turbine blades or power transmission lines. In the case of flexible frame structures submitted to fluid flows, the consistent computation of inertial and aerodynamic forces for large displacements is a challenging task. In this article we present a novel formulation for the accurate computation of aerodynamic forces for large displacements and rotations using the co-rotational approach, the quasi-steady theory and the principle of virtual work. This formulation is coupled with a reference consistent co-rotational formulation for computing internal and inertial forces, providing a unified set of nonlinear balance equations. A numerical resolution procedure is proposed and implemented within the open-source library ONSAS. The proposed formulation and its implementation are validated through the resolution of five examples, including a realistic wind turbine analysis problem. The results provided by the proposed formulation are compared with analytic solutions and solutions obtained using a lumped mass approach. The proposed formulation provides accurate solutions for challenging numerical problems with large displacements and rotations.

Abstract:A generalized quasi-steady three-degrees-of-freedom analytical model, capable of predicting the aerodynamic instability of a cylinder with a generic cross-section, is proposed. The three degrees-of-freedom refer to the two orthogonal displacements, perpendicular to the body’s axis, plus the rotation about the longitudinal body axis. It allows for the variation of the force coefficients, i.e., drag, lift, and moment, with Reynolds number based on the relative flow velocity, with relative angle-of-attack, and relative cable-wind angle. The aerodynamic forces acting on the structure are linearized around the static equilibrium configuration. Based on the analytical solution of the eigenvalue problem, an expression of the galloping- and static divergence-type instability condition is derived. Finally, an application of the model is proposed to study the galloping of a full-scale dry inclined/yawed cable.
Static Aeroelasticity Analysis of a Rotor Blade Using a Gauss-Seidel Fluid-Structure Interaction Method

Abstract:The present study introduces a Gauss-Seidel fluid-structure interaction (FSI) method including the flow solver, structural statics solver and a fast data transfer technique, for the research of structural deformation and flow field variation of rotor blades under the combined influence of steady aerodynamic and centrifugal forces. The FSI method is illustrated and validated by the static aeroelasticity analysis of a transonic compressor rotor blade, NASA Rotor 37. An improved local interpolation with data reduction (LIWDR) algorithm is introduced for fast data transfer on the fluid-solid interface of blade. The results of FSI calculation of NASA Rotor 37 show that when compared with the radial basis function (RBF) based interpolation algorithm, LIWDR meets the interpolation accuracy requirements, while the calculation cost can be greatly improved. The data transmission time is only about 1% of that of RBF. Moreover, the iteration step of steady flow computation within one single FSI has little impact on the converged aerodynamic and structural results. The aerodynamic load-caused deformation accounts for nearly 50% of the total. The effects of blade deformation on the variations of aerodynamic performance are given, demonstrating that when static aeroelasticity is taken into account, the choke mass flow rate increases and the peak adiabatic efficiency slightly decreases. The impact mechanisms on performance variations are presented in detail.
Modified Solution Strategy Of Framed Structures For Geometrically Nonlinear Analysis

Abstract:three phases are essential to the incremental-iterative analysis of elastically nonlinear structures, which generally followed in sequence: predictor, corrector and error-checking phases. The predictor phase included an assemblage of structural stiffness and the calculation of the incremental displacements, the corrector phase is to calculate the nodal forces, and the error-checking phase is to calculate the unbalanced forces and to update the configuration. In this paper, a modified solution strategy is presented for an elastically framed structure undergoing large displacements and large rotations. In predictor phase, by virtue of the rotational matrix for a rotational vector, three orthogonal vectors which rigidly attached a cross section were determined; using the central displacements and the vectors of cross-sectional principal axes, the displacements and strains for any point on a cross section were accurately determined. Applying the principle of virtual work, interpolating by the cubic Hermite spline, the tangent stiffness matrix was obtained. In the corrector phase, a corotational formulation is used for the recovery of the nodal forces with natural displacements, and it is derived in a corotational configuration which is rigidly moved by the last calculated the configuration in equilibrium. In each incremental load, the geometrical update of the elements are implemented before the incremental displacements are resolved, then the local element-end displacements corresponding to the corotational configuration were obtained; utilizing the stiffness matrix in a corotational configuration is employed to calculate the incremental element-end forces. Several classical numerical examples verified the accuracy and the efficiency of the present solution strategy.
A COROTATIONAL UPDATED LAGRANGIAN FORMULATION FOR GEOMETRICALLY NONLINEAR ANALYSIS OF 2D FRAMES

Abstract:A method is presented for geometrically nonlinear analysis of 2D frames. An updated Lagrangian (UL) formulation is used to calculate the incremental nodal displacements, and incremental nodal forces are recovered by a corotational formulation whose configuration (Cr) is derived from a rigid-body motion of the last calculated configuration (C1) in equilibrium. Firstly, the equation of virtual work is expressed in terms of incremental nodal natural deformations in Cr; then, the relations are deduced between the incremental nodal natural deformations in Cr and the incremental nodal displacement vector in C1. Adopting the relations in the equation of virtual work, the tangent stiffness matrix for incremental nodal forces is obtained for Cr, and it can pass a rigid-body test. The analysis has considered the loaded deformations which will result in an additional matrix in the tangent stiffness matrix. The numerical examples show that: with fewer elements, the presented method can achieve similar precision to UL formulation; the matrix with respect to the loaded deformation can effectively improve the efficiency, but it may result in membrane locking if the deformation is large.

Abstract:With this work, we present a new object-oriented framework to study the nonlinear dynamics of slender structures made of composite multilayer and hyperelastic materials, which combines finite element method and multibody system formalism with a robust integration scheme. Each mechanical system under consideration is represented as a collection of infinitely stiff components, such as rigid bodies, and flexible components like geometrically exact beams and solid-degenerate shells, which are spatially discretized into finite elements. The semi-discrete equations are temporally discretized for a fixed time increment with a momentum-preserving, energy-preserving/dissipative method, which allows the systematic annihilation of unresolved high-frequency content. As usual in multibody system dynamics, kinematic constraints are employed to render supports, joints and structural connections. The presented ideas are implemented following the object-oriented programming philosophy. The approach, which is perfectly suitable for wind energy or aeronautic applications, is finally tested and its potential is illustrated by means of numerical examples.

Abstract:Abstract High aspect ratio wings are potential candidates for use in atmospheric satellites and civil aircraft as they exhibit a low induced drag, which can reduce the fuel consumption. Owing to their slender and light weight configuration, such wings undergo highly flexible aeroelastic static and dynamic deformations that cannot be analyzed using conventional linear analysis methods. An aeroelastic analysis framework based on the absolute nodal coordinate formulation (ANCF) can be used to analyze the static and dynamic deformations of high aspect ratio wings. However, owing to the highly nonlinear elastic force, the statically deformed wing shape during steady flight cannot be efficiently obtained via static analyses. Therefore, an ANCF with a vector-strain transformation (ANCF-VST) was proposed in this work. Considering the slender geometry of high aspect ratio wings, the nodal vectors of an ANCF beam element were transformed to the strains. In this manner, a constant stiffness matrix and reduced degrees-of-freedom could be generated while capturing the highly flexible deformations accurately. The ANCF-VST exhibited superior convergence performance and accuracy compared to those of analytical approaches and other nonlinear beam formulations. Moreover, an aeroelastic analysis flow coupling the ANCF-VST and an aerodynamic model based on the unsteady vortex lattice method was proposed to perform the static and dynamic analyses successively. The proposed and existing aeroelastic frameworks exhibited a good agreement in the analyses, which demonstrated the feasibility of employing the proposed framework to analyze high aspect ratio wings.

Abstract:The design and development of a wing for a completely brand-new aircraft represents, in aeronautics, one of the highest challenges from an engineering point of view. The present work describes a novel methodology devoted to execute numeric simulation in a non-linear post-buckling regime to verify the composite wing compliance under the design load conditions. The procedure was developed as part of a wing design and research activity and was motivated by the need to have more realistic results, without standard conservatisms like the no-buckling up to ultimate load, to be of use for achieving further weight savings. To carry this out, it was obviously necessary to ensure that the structural integrity was also guaranteed in the post-buckling regime, above the limit load, and therefore in a highly non-linear regime. The present work illustrates a numerical approach based on non-linear finite element analysis which uses the inertia relief option in order to have a more realistic representation of the structural response of the wing in its real context. All that represents a novelty since, at present, the commercial FE codes allow us to use the inertia relief option exclusively for linear analysis. Obviously, the approach can be applied to any other structural component with similar needs. The obtained results show that the differences between linear and non-linear regime are not negligible and, above all, that it is possible to design a wing (or other structural components) considering, at the same time, the large deformation due to the post-buckling regime, the material non-linearities due to the failures and any other non-linearities in order to achieve the challenging weight requirement of the new aircraft generation.

Abstract:In the ongoing development of DLR's Versatile Aeromechanics Simulation Tool, an elastic-beam model is integrated into the multibody system based on the floating frame-of-reference formulation. Although the application of this formulation for one-dimensional beam models has already been addressed in the literature, the challenge remains to properly model the torsion dynamics of rotor blades – especially under high centrifugal loads. To this aim, this work suggests the consideration of rotational shape functions in the inertia shape integrals and in the application of gravitational, inertial, and external loads. This modified approach is validated based on the structural analysis of a rotor blade with complex geometrical properties.

Abstract:The dynamic response of various rotating stiffened cylindrical and disk structures has been performed using low- and high-fidelity two-dimensional finite element models. The methodology is based on the Carrera Unified Formulation, in which the shell models are obtained hierarchically and automatically. These theories are formulated by expanding the unknown variables over the shell thickness. Various shell models can be implemented depending on the choice of the polynomial employed in the expansion. Lagrange polynomials are considered for developing different kinematic models and for easily modeling the stiffeners. The stiffener deformation is precisely captured through higher-order models, and the mechanical continuity between the stiffeners and skin is automatically guaranteed at the Lagrange points. The linearized equations of motion include the Coriolis and initial stress contributions. Stiffened cylinders and disks with different boundary conditions are considered. The results are compared with the three-dimensional finite element solutions from the literature or obtained using commercial software.

Abstract:Based on a co-rotational framework, a three-noded iso-parametric mixed element formulation for large displacement analysis of 2D beam was presented, this formulation is free of membrane/shear locking problems. Firstly, the co-rotational framework was fixed at the internal node of the element, which translates and rotates rigidly with this node, but does not deform with the element. Then, a set of vectorial rotational variables were defined to describe accurately the element deformation, these rotational variables may have different connotations in an incremental solution procedure. Thirdly, Green strain and independently assumed strain fields were introduced in calculating the mixed Hellinger-Reissner functional, and the internal force vector was derived by enforcing the stationarity to the mixed functional, thereafter, the element tangent stiffness matrix was calculated from the internal force vector by differentiating it with respect to local variables, and a symmetric element tangent stiffness matrix was achieved. Finally, several examples were analysed to illustrate the reliability and efficiency of the proposed procedure in modelling of 2D frame structures with large displacements and large rotations. A component-level co-rotational 3D continuum finite element framework for efficient flexible multibody analysis

Abstract:This paper proposes a systematic and novel component level co-rotational (CR) framework, for upgrading existing 3D continuum finite elements to flexible multibody analysis. Without using any model reduction techniques, the high efficiency is achieved through sophisticated operations in both modeling and numerical implementation phrases. In modeling phrase, as in conventional 3D nonlinear finite analysis, the nodal absolute coordinates are used as the system generalized coordinates, therefore simple formulations of the inertia force terms can be obtained. For the elastic force terms, inspired by existing floating frame of reference formulation (FFRF) and conventional element-level CR formulation, a component-level CR modeling strategy is developed. By in combination with Schur complement theory and fully exploring the nature of the component-level CR modeling method, an extremely efficient procedure is developed, which enables us to transform the linear equations raised from each Newton-Raphson iteration step into linear systems with constant coefficient matrix. The coefficient matrix thus can be pre-calculated and decomposed only once, and at all the subsequent time steps only back substitutions are needed, which avoids frequently updating the Jacobian matrix and avoids directly solving the large-scale linearized equation in each iteration. Multiple examples are presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed framework.

Abstract:Abstract This contribution proposes a methodology for the numerical analysis and for the improvement of the design of free‐form membrane structures subjected to flow‐induced effects. Typical applications in such context are tents exposed to wind. Different physical factors connected to thin and flexible structures, highly turbulent air flows, as well as their interaction have to be taken into account. This necessitates the appropriate combination of different numerical disciplines which is done in the simulation of fluid–structure interaction. The over‐all complexity of the problem favours a modular and flexible software environment with a partitioned coupling strategy. Within such an environment, the solution of each physical and algorithmic field is applicable with the most suited method. In the proposed framework, the structural field is solved with the in‐house finite element program CARAT, which uses several finite element types and advanced solution strategies for form finding, nonlinear, and dynamical problems. The fluid field is solved with the CFD software package CFX‐5. The interaction between both physical fields is realized by the exchange of boundary conditions. Beyond the mere exchange of data, the utilization of stabilized as well as efficient coupling strategies is mandatory. This contribution illuminates the scope of numerical simulation theory and presents implementations followed by illustrative examples. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

One aspect, aerostructural coupling, calls for design tools that are both accurate and computationally efficient. In this paper, we present a combined-fidelity approach that couples high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics and computational solid mechanics simulations, with a conventional aeroelastic turbine modeling tool based on blade element momentum and beam theories. The approach is integrated into a multidisciplinary optimization framework. It takes advantage of the high-fidelity tightly-coupled aerostructural simulations to evaluate the rotor power production and uses conventional unsteady simulations to add structural sizing constraints. We show that the overall method is effective to obtain improved optimal designs that are resistant to extreme and fatigue loads. Finally, we discuss the computational cost and benefits of the proposed approach for the design of wind turbine rotors.

Abstract:The International Journal of High Performance Computing Applications, Ahead of Print. This paper presents the first application of an Integrated Three-Dimensional aeromechanical analysis—defined as the coupled solution of three-dimensional finite element-based structural dynamics with a three-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes-based fluid dynamics—to predict the stresses on a modern coaxial rotor. The coupling was carried out with the University of Maryland's structural dynamic solver X3D and the U.S. Army's CREATETM–AV Helios suite of fluid dynamic solvers. A modern four-bladed hingeless coaxial rotor model—inspired by the gross dimensions of the Sikorsky S-97 Raider but generic and open source otherwise—is developed as a demonstration test case. The new structural solver is driven by parallel and scalable solvers and advanced high performance computing. It is enabled by high-order three-dimensional brick finite elements unified with multibody dynamics, integrated aerodynamics, and a special 3D-to-1D fluid-structure interfaces refines the power of delta-coupling procedure while retaining the advantages of existing CFD mesh motion schemes. The analysis predicts the three-dimensional stresses on the rotor blades and hub, together with the deformations, airloads, and wake, in an integrated manner. Two flight conditions are studied: a low-speed flight at 37 knots and a high-speed flight at 150 knots. Interesting three-dimensional unsteady stress patterns are revealed all across the blade but particularly inboard of 50% rotor radius—patterns that change from flight to flight and have remained invisible until now—since they could neither be predicted nor measured in flight. The maximum axial stresses exhibited 3/rev variation at low speed, and 2/rev variation at high speed flight. The lower rotor carried higher oscillatory stress burden at low speed, whereas both the rotors shared the same stress burden at high speed flight. The key conclusion is that such analysis is now indeed possible, and the stress patterns they reveal provide deeper insights into the dynamics of advanced rotors, and these might provide a path toward mitigating them in the future.

A novel 3D variational aeroelastic framework for flexible multibody dynamics: Application to bat-like flapping dynamics

Abstract:We present a novel three-dimensional (3D) variational aeroelastic framework for flapping wing with a flexible multibody system subjected to an external incompressible turbulent flow. The proposed aeroelastic framework consists of a three-dimensional fluid solver with delayed detached eddy simulation (DDES) and a nonlinear monolithic elastic structural solver for the flexible multibody system with constraints. Radial basis function (RBF) is applied in this framework to transfer the aerodynamic forces and structural displacements across the discrete non-matching interface meshes while satisfying a global energy conservation. The fluid equations are discretized using a stabilized Petrov-Galerkin method in space and the generalized-$\alpha$ approach is employed to integrate the solution in time. The flexible multibody system is solved by using geometrically exact co-rotational finite element method and an energy decaying scheme is used to achieve numerical stability of the multibody solver with constraints. A nonlinear iterative force correction (NIFC) scheme is applied in a staggered partitioned iterative manner to maintain the numerical stability of aeroelastic coupling with strong added mass effect. An isotropic aluminum wing with flapping motion is simulated via the proposed aeroelastic framework and the accuracy of the coupled solution is validated with the available experimental data. We next study the robustness and reliability of the 3D flexible multibody aeroelastic framework for an anisotropic flapping wing flight involving battens and membranes with composite material and compare against the experimental results. Finally, we demonstrate the aeroelastic framework for a bat-like wing and examine the effects of flexibility on the flapping wing dynamics.

Abstract:A methodology to simulate the unsteady, nonlinear aeroelastic behavior of a folding-wing concept in multiple flight configurations is presented. It is based on a partitioned or co-simulation scheme, which divides the dynamical system into interacting aerodynamic and structural models. The aerodynamic model that predicts the loads is based on the unsteady vortex-lattice method. The structural model that predicts the motion of the folding wing is based on the finite-element method. The grids in the two models are non-matching. The method for simultaneously integrating the combined set of equations is based on the fourth-order predictor-corrector method developed by Hamming. The technique for transferring information between the non-matching grids is the radial basis interpolation method. This system is partially validated by showing that the predicted loads here agree very closely with numerical results based on the Euler equations for a wing with prescribed unsteady twisting and pitching motion and with analytical solutions available in the literature. Finally, a series of numerical simulations related to the aeroelastic behavior of a folding-wing concept inspired by gull wings provide new insights into flutter boundaries as a function of the dihedral angles of the inner and outer wings. The findings in this paper strongly suggest that the present numerical aeroelastic model will be a valuable computational tool for further studies of aircraft with morphing wings.

Abstract:We present a three-dimensional (3D) partitioned aeroelastic formulation for a flexible multibody system interacting with incompressible turbulent fluid flow. While the incompressible Navier-Stokes system is discretized using a stabilized Petrov-Galerkin procedure, the multibody structural system consists of a generic interaction of multiple components such as rigid body, beams and flexible thin shells along with various types of joints and connections among them. A co-rotational framework is utilized for the category of small strain problems where the displacement of the body is decomposed into a rigid body rotation and a small strain component. This assumption simplifies the structural equations and allows for the incorporation of multiple bodies (rigid as well as flexible) in the system. The displacement and rotation constraints at the joints are imposed by a Lagrange multiplier method. The equilibrium conditions at the fluid-structure interface are satisfied by the transfer of tractions and structural displacements via the radial basis function approach, which is globally conservative. For the coupled stability in low structure-to-fluid mass ratio regimes, a nonlinear iterative force correction scheme is employed in the partitioned staggered predictor-corrector scheme. The convergence and generality of the radial basis function mapping are analyzed by carrying out systematic error analysis of the transfer of fluid traction across the non-matching fluid-structure interface where a third-order of convergence is observed. The proposed aeroelastic framework is then validated by considering a flow across a flexible pitching plate configuration with serration at the trailing edge. Finally, we demonstrate the flow across a flexible flapping wing of a bat modeling the bone fingers as beams and the flexible membrane as thin shells in the multibody system along with the joints.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a framework that constructs reduced order models for nonlinear structural mechanics in a nonintrusive fashion, and can handle large scale simulations. Three steps are carried out: (i) the production of high‐fidelity solutions by commercial software, (ii) the offline stage of the model reduction and (iii) the online stage where the reduced order model is exploited. The nonintrusivity assumes that only the displacement field solution is known, and the proposed framework carries‐out operations on these simulation data during the offline phase. The compatibility with a new commercial code only needs the implementation of a routine converting the discretized solution into our in‐house data format. The nonintrusive capabilities of the framework are demonstrated on numerical experiments using commercial versions of Z‐set and Ansys Mechanical. The nonlinear constitutive equations are evaluated by using an external plugin. The large scale simulations are handled using domain decomposition and parallel computing with distributed memory. The features and performances of the framework are evaluated on two numerical applications involving elastoviscoplastic materials: the second one involves a model of high‐pressure blade, where the framework is used to extrapolate cyclic loadings in 6.5 hours, whereas the reference high‐fidelity computation would take 9.5 days.

Abstract:The principal goal of this research is developing physics-based, reduced-order, analytical models of nonlinear fluid–structure interactions associated with offshore structures. Our primary focus is to generalize the Hamilton's variational framework so that systems of flow-oscillator equations can be derived from first principles. This is an extension of earlier work that led to a single energy equation describing the fluid–structure interaction. It is demonstrated here that flow-oscillator models are a subclass of the general, physical-based framework. A flow-oscillator model is a reduced-order mechanical model, generally comprising two mechanical oscillators, one modelling the structural oscillation and the other a nonlinear oscillator representing the fluid behaviour coupled to the structural motion. Reduced-order analytical model development continues to be carried out using a Hamilton's principle-based variational approach. This provides flexibility in the long run for generalizing the modelling paradigm to complex, three-dimensional problems with multiple degrees of freedom, although such extension is very difficult. As both experimental and analytical capabilities advance, the critical research path to developing and implementing fluid–structure interaction models entails formulating generalized equations of motion, as a superset of the flow-oscillator models; and developing experimentally derived, semi-analytical functions to describe key terms in the governing equations of motion. The developed variational approach yields a system of governing equations. This will allow modelling of multiple d.f. systems. The extensions derived generalize the Hamilton's variational formulation for such problems. The Navier–Stokes equations are derived and coupled to the structural oscillator. This general model has been shown to be a superset of the flow-oscillator model. Based on different assumptions, one can derive a variety of flow-oscillator models.
