Aggression is a social behavior that is critical for survival and reproduction. In adults, circulating gonadal hormones, such as androgens, act on neural circuits to modulate aggressive interactions, especially in reproductive contexts. In many species, individuals also demonstrate aggression before reaching gonadal maturation. Adult male song sparrows, Melospiza melodia , breed seasonally but maintain territories year-round. Juvenile (hatch-year) males aggressively compete for territory ownership during their first winter when circulating testosterone is low. Here, we characterized the relationship between the steroid milieu and aggressive behavior in free-living juvenile male song sparrows in winter. We investigated the effect of a 10 min simulated territorial intrusion (STI) on behavior and steroid levels in blood, 10 microdissected brain regions, and 4 peripheral tissues (liver, pectoral muscle, adrenal glands, and testes). Using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), we quantified 12 steroids: pregnenolone, progesterone, corticosterone, 11-dehydrocorticosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone, androstenedione, testosterone, 5α-dihydrotestosterone, 17β-estradiol , 17α-estradiol, estrone, and estriol. We found that juvenile males are robustly aggressive, like adult males. An STI increases progesterone and corticosterone levels in blood and brain and increases 11-dehydrocorticosterone levels in blood only. Pregnenolone, androgens, and estrogens are generally non-detectable and are not affected by an STI. In peripheral tissues, steroid concentrations are very high in the adrenals. These data suggest that adrenal steroids, such as progesterone and corticosterone, might promote juvenile aggression and that juvenile and adult songbirds might rely on distinct neuroendocrine mechanisms to support similar aggressive behaviors.

An aggressive interaction rapidly increases brain androgens in a male songbird during the non-breeding season

Abstract:Aggression is a crucial behavior that impacts access to limited resources in different environmental contexts. Androgens synthesized by the gonads promote aggression during the breeding season. However, aggression can be expressed during the non-breeding season, despite low androgen synthesis by the gonads. The brain can also synthesize steroids (‘neurosteroids’), including androgens, which might promote aggression during the non-breeding season. Male song sparrows, Melospiza melodia , are territorial year-round and allow the study of seasonal changes in the steroid modulation of aggression. Here, we quantified steroids following a simulated territorial intrusion (STI) for 10 min in wild adult male song sparrows during the breeding and non-breeding seasons. Using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), we examined 11 steroids: pregnenolone, progesterone, corticosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone, androstenedione, testosterone, 5α-dihydrotestosterone, 17β-estradiol, 17α-estradiol, estriol, and estrone. Steroids were measured in blood and 10 microdissected brain regions that regulate social behavior. In both seasons, STI increased corticosterone in the blood and brain. In the breeding season, STI had no rapid effects on androgens or estrogens. Intriguingly, in the non-breeding season, STI increased testosterone and androstenedione in several behaviorally-relevant regions, but not in the blood, where androgens remained non-detectable. Also in the non-breeding season, STI increased progesterone in the blood and specific brain regions. Overall, rapid socially modulated changes in brain steroid levels are more prominent during the non-breeding season. Brain steroid levels vary with season and social context in a region-specific manner and suggest a role for neuroandrogens in aggression during the non-breeding season. Significance Statement Steroids are important modulators of the brain and behavior. Steroids are secreted by glands into the bloodstream to exert their actions on target tissues. In addition, the brain itself can locally produce steroids (‘neurosteroids’). We examined circulating and neural steroids across seasons and in response to an aggressive interaction in wild male song sparrows. Local androgen levels in the brain rapidly increase in response to an aggressive interaction in the non-breeding season, but not in the breeding season, indicating that neurosteroid production is dependent on the season and social context.

Abstract:The influence of recombinant equine interferon-beta 1 (rEqIFN-beta 1) on mononuclear cells of peripheral blood (PBMC) and polymorphonuclear neutrophilic granulocytes (PMN) was tested under in vitro and ex vivo conditions. Treatment of equine PBMC with IFN in vitro enhanced the antibody-independent cytotoxicity (AICC) and antibody-dependent cytotoxicity (ADCC) while there was no significant effect on the cytotoxic capacity of PMN treated with rEqIFN-beta 1 in vitro. Ex vivo there was an increased capacity of AICC and ADCC upon single or multiple application of rEqIFN-beta 1 in PMN, only. Treatment with rEqIFN-beta 1 thus induced an increased cellular cytotoxicity in vitro and in vivo but in different populations of peripheral blood cells. In vivo rEqIFN-beta 1 causes a pronounced activation of PMN but not of PBMC as cytotoxic effector cells. This might be achieved indirectly, e.g., by cytokines produced by IFN-sensitive cells.
Urbanization alters the song propagation of two human-commensal songbird species

Abstract:Urban expansion has increased pollution, including both physical (e.g., exhaust, litter) and sensory (e.g., anthropogenic noise) components. Urban avian species tend to increase the frequency and/or amplitude of songs to reduce masking by low-frequency noise. Nevertheless, song propagation to the receiver can also be constrained by the environment. We know relatively little about how this propagation may be altered across species that (1) vary in song complexity and (2) inhabit areas along an urbanization gradient. We investigated differences in song amplitude, attenuation, and active space, or the maximum distance a receiver can detect a signal, in two human-commensal species: the house sparrow (Passer domesticus) and house finch (Haemorhous mexicanus). We described urbanization both discretely and quantitatively to investigate the habitat characteristics most responsible for propagation changes. We found mixed support for our hypothesis of urban-specific degradation of songs. Urban songs propagated with higher amplitude; however, urban song fidelity was species-specific and showed lowered active space for urban house finch songs. Taken together, our results suggest that urban environments may constrain the propagation of vocal signals in species-specific manners. Ultimately, this has implications for the ability of urban birds to communicate with potential mates or kin.

Abstract:The soundscape acts as a selective agent on organisms that use acoustic signals to communicate. A number of studies document variation in structure, amplitude, or timing of signal production in correspondence with environmental noise levels thus supporting the hypothesis that organisms are changing their signaling behaviors to avoid masking. The time scale at which organisms respond is of particular interest. Signal structure may evolve across generations through processes such as cultural or genetic transmission. Individuals may also change their behavior during development (ontogenetic change) or in real time (i.e., immediate flexibility). These are not mutually exclusive mechanisms, and all must be investigated to understand how organisms respond to selection pressures from the soundscape. Previous work on white-crowned sparrows (<i>Zonotrichia leucophrys</i>) found that males holding territories in louder areas tend to sing higher frequency songs and that both noise levels and song frequency have increased over time (30 years) in urban areas. These previous findings suggest that songs are changing across generations; however, it is not known if this species also exhibits immediate flexibility. Here, we conducted an exploratory, observational study to ask whether males change the minimum frequency of their song in response to immediate changes in noise levels. We also ask whether males sing louder, as increased minimum frequency may be physiologically linked to producing sound at higher amplitudes, in response to immediate changes in environmental noise. We found that territorial males adjust song amplitude but not minimum frequency in response to changes in environmental noise levels. Our results suggest that males do not show immediate flexibility in song minimum frequency, although experimental manipulations are needed to test this hypothesis further. Our work highlights the need to investigate multiple mechanisms of adaptive response to soundscapes.

Abstract:BackgroundExploratory behaviour is one of the best-investigated behavioural traits. However, little is known about how differences in familiarity, i.e. in the knowledge and previous experience with a companion can influence the exploration of a novel environment. However, to our knowledge, such a critical feature of the social environment has never been the target of a study relating it to exploratory behaviour in birds. Here we examined if familiarity with a conspecific could affect behavioural responses of individuals confronted with a novel environment. We recorded the latency to land on the ground, latency to feed, time spent feeding and number of sectors visited of 48 female and 48 male house sparrows (Passer domesticus) in an indoor aviary in three contexts: alone (individual context), with an unfamiliar and with a familiar same-sex companion.ResultsHouse sparrows landed sooner on the ground when in the familiar context than when in the individual context. Birds in unfamiliar pairs followed each other less than familiar birds, but this difference diminished with time spent exploring. Moreover, males and females differed in their behavioural responses in the unfamiliar context. Females with a familiar companion landed sooner than when they were paired with an unfamiliar conspecific, whereas only the presence of a companion but not familiarity reduced males latency to land on the ground. Finally, when considering the unfamiliar context males had shorter latencies to forage and thus spent more time eating than females.ConclusionsThe presence or absence of a companion and its familiarity with the focal individual influenced differently the behavioural responses of male and female house sparrows in a novel environment. As house sparrows are strongly sociable, the influence of the social environment is likely to be of paramount importance to understand the selective pressures acting on them, particularly in recently colonized areas with ephemeral food sources. Our results shed light on the complex influence that the social environment has on the behavioural responses of a cosmopolitan bird.

Effects of early auditory experience on the development of local song preference in female swamp sparrows

Abstract:A growing number of studies show that learning about male mating signals can shape the way females discriminate among males and may influence the evolution of both female preferences and the male traits under selection. Female songbirds commonly prefer local songs over foreign songs from a different population. In some species, however, the extent of variation among songs sung by different males within a population is as great as the variation observed between populations, raising the question of how females are able to discriminate local from foreign songs. Here, we report that laboratory-reared female swamp sparrows (Melospiza georgiana) not only show a preference for the particular song types with which they were tutored as compared with both foreign songs and unfamiliar local songs but also show preference for unfamiliar local songs over unfamiliar foreign songs. An acoustic analysis comparing tutor songs and those presented as unfamiliar local and foreign songs suggests that female swamp sparrows might be attuned to the specifics of local note phonology when assessing the attractiveness of unfamiliar songs. Our results demonstrate that early auditory experience influences response to geographic song variation in female swamp sparrows, and suggest the possibility that female songbirds may generalize what they learn from songs early in life to novel songs heard in adulthood. Additional work is needed to evaluate the contribution of unlearned predispositions for local song.

Abstract:Habitats are changing rapidly around the globe and urbanization is one of the primary drivers. Urbanization changes food availability, environmental stressors, and the prevalence of disease for many species. These changes can lead to divergence in phenotypic traits, including behavioral, physiological, and morphological features between urban and rural populations. Recent research highlights that urbanization is also changing the gut microbial communities found in a diverse group of host species. These changes have not been uniform, leaving uncertainty as to how urban habitats are shaping gut microbial communities. To better understand these effects, we investigated the gut bacterial communities of White-Crowned Sparrow (<i>Zonotrichia leucophrys</i>) populations along an urbanization gradient in the San Francisco Bay area. We examined how gut bacterial communities vary with the local environment and host morphological characteristics. We found direct effects of environmental factors, including urban noise levels and territory land cover, as well as indirect effects through body size and condition, on alpha and beta diversity of gut microbial communities. We also found that urban and rural birds' microbiomes differed in which variables predicted their diversity, with urban communities driven by host morphology, and rural communities driven by environmental factors. Elucidating these effects provides a better understanding of how urbanization affects wild avian physiology.

Comparative Study of Aggressive Signaling in Three Closely-Related Warbler Species

Abstract:Songbirds are known to use several different ways to signal aggression, and even closely-related species can differ in this respect. It is not clear why the variability exists among species. Here, we used playback experiments to compare the vocal behavior of three closely-related songbird species ( Phylloscopus omeiensis , P. tephrocephalus and P. valentin ) during simulated territorial intrusion. First of all, we analyzed spontaneous singing of each species and found that species differed quantitatively but not qualitatively. P. valentini sang with fewer song types and with more diverse song type sequencing patterns than both P. tephrocephalus and P. omeiensis . Species differed in how much they modified their spontaneous singing while responding to playback. P. valentini males modified singing the most as they increased song type switching rate and tended to sequence song types according to a fixed linear order while responding to playback. P. omeiensis increased song type switching rate, and P. tephrocephalus modified singing the least. We correlated singing in the two contexts (playback vs. spontaneous) both between and within each species. We found that species/males that tended to produce song types according to a fixed sequence and switch after every song type modified their singing less in aggressive contexts (e.g., P. tephrocephalus ).

Global meta-analysis reveals urban-associated behavioral differences among wild populations

Abstract:Urbanization is causing fundamental changes to natural environments, effecting rapid and substantial adaptive phenotypic change in wild populations. While a large body of work has investigated how urbanization may shape interspecific variation in behavioral traits, such as via urban environmental filtering, no study has yet quantitatively assessed global patterns of urban-associated intraspecific behavioral variation. Here, we conducted a phylogenetic meta-analysis to assess urban-associated behavioral differences in wild populations of birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and insects. We focused on four commonly measured behaviors (boldness, aggression, activity, and exploration) and extracted paired urban-nonurban effect size estimates for phenotypic means and variances (k = 278), behavioral repeatability (k = 13), and behavioral correlations (k = 14) from 80 studies. We found clear evidence that urban populations exhibit heightened average boldness, aggression, exploration, and activity compared to nonurban conspecifics, a result that was robust among species, geographic region, and ecological niche. Further, our results suggested that generalist species have the strongest behavioral responses. Conversely, we did not find strong evidence linking urbanization to changes in phenotypic variation, behavioral repeatability, or behavioral correlations. Our results summarize data from a rapidly evolving field in urban ecology and demonstrate geographically and taxonomically widespread differences in behavior between urban and nonurban populations, suggesting parallel natural selection across urban species and populations.

Androgen signaling in LMAN regulates song stereotypy in male canaries

Abstract:During breeding when testosterone concentrations are high, male songbirds that are open-ended vocal learners like canaries (Serinus canaria) tend to produce a stable, stereotyped song that facilitates mate attraction or territory defense. Outside breeding contexts, song becomes more variable. The neuroendocrine mechanisms controlling this vocal variability across seasons are not entirely clear. We tested whether androgen signaling within the lateral magnocellular nucleus of the anterior nidopallium (LMAN), a cortical-like brain region of the vocal control system known as a vocal variability generator, plays a role in seasonal vocal variability. We first characterized song in birds housed alone on a short day (SD) photoperiod, which simulates non-breeding conditions. Then, cannulae filled with the androgen receptor (AR) blocker flutamide or left empty as control were implanted bilaterally in LMAN. Birds were then transferred to long days (LD) to simulate the breeding season and song was analyzed again. Blocking AR in LMAN increased acoustic variability of song and the acoustic variability of syllables. However, blocking AR in LMAN did not impact the variability of syllable usage nor their sequencing in LD birds, song features that are controlled by androgen signaling in a somatosensory brain region of the vocal control system called HVC. These findings highlight the multifactorial, non-redundant actions of steroid hormones in controlling complex social behaviors such as birdsong. They also support the hypothesis that LMAN is a key brain area for the effects of testosterone on song plasticity both seasonally in adults and during the song crystallization process at sexual maturity.
Urban living can rescue Darwin's finches from the lethal effects of invasive vampire flies

Abstract:Human activity changes multiple factors in the environment, which can affect the health and survival of birds. Our study shows that urban nestling Darwin's finches in the Galápagos Islands are less affected by invasive avian vampire flies compared to non‐urban nestlings. Urban nestlings are more tolerant of parasites (via red blood cell production) and resistant to parasites (via innate immune responses), compared to non‐urban nestlings. Although non‐urban nestlings differentially express genes related to adaptive immune pathways, this response is not an effective defense. Artwork by Alexandria Soldo. Human activity changes multiple factors in the environment, which can have positive or negative synergistic effects on organisms. However, few studies have explored the causal effects of multiple anthropogenic factors, such as urbanization and invasive species, on animals and the mechanisms that mediate these interactions. This study examines the influence of urbanization on the detrimental effect of invasive avian vampire flies (Philornis downsi) on endemic Darwin's finches in the Galápagos Islands. We experimentally manipulated nest fly abundance in urban and non‐urban locations and then characterized nestling health, fledging success, diet, and gene expression patterns related to host defense. Fledging success of non‐parasitized nestlings from urban (79%) and non‐urban (75%) nests did not differ significantly. However, parasitized, non‐urban nestlings lost more blood, and fewer nestlings survived (8%) compared to urban nestlings (50%). Stable isotopic values (δ15N) from urban nestling feces were higher than those from non‐urban nestlings, suggesting that urban nestlings are consuming more protein. δ15N values correlated negatively with parasite abundance, which suggests that diet might influence host defenses (e.g., tolerance and resistance). Parasitized, urban nestlings differentially expressed genes within pathways associated with red blood cell production (tolerance) and pro‐inflammatory response (innate immunological resistance), compared to parasitized, non‐urban nestlings. In contrast, parasitized non‐urban nestlings differentially expressed genes within pathways associated with immunoglobulin production (adaptive immunological resistance). Our results suggest that urban nestlings are investing more in pro‐inflammatory responses to resist parasites but also recovering more blood cells to tolerate blood loss. Although non‐urban nestlings are mounting an adaptive immune response, it is likely a last effort by the immune system rather than an effective defense against avian vampire flies since few nestlings survived.

Early auditory and adult mating experiences interact with singer identity to shape neural responses to song in female zebra finches

Abstract:Social and sensory experiences across the lifespan can shape social interactions, however, experience-dependent plasticity is widely studied within discrete life stages. In the socially monogamous zebra finch, in which females use learned vocal signals to identify individuals and form long-lasting pair bonds, developmental exposure to song is key for females to show species-typical song perception and preferences. While adult mating experience can still lead to pair-bonding and song preference learning even in birds with limited previous song exposure ("song-naive"), whether similarities in adult behavioral plasticity between normally-reared and song-naive females reflect convergent patterns of neural activity is unknown. We investigated this using expression of a marker of neural activity and plasticity (phosphorylated S6) in mated normally-reared and song-naive females in response to song from either their mate, a neighbor, or an unfamiliar male. We found that, in portions of a secondary auditory region (the caudomedial nidopallium NCM) and in dopaminergic neurons of the caudal ventral tegmental area, hearing the mate's song significantly increased pS6 expression in females from both rearing conditions. In contrast, within other NCM subregions, song-identity drove different patterns of pS6 expression depending on the rearing condition. These data suggest that developmental experiences can have long-lasting impacts on the neural signatures of behaviors acquired in adulthood and that socially-driven behavioral plasticity in adults may arise through both shared and divergent neural circuits depending on an individual's developmental experiences.

Abstract:The context surrounding vocal communication can have a strong influence on how vocal signals are perceived. The serotonergic system is well-positioned for modulating the perception of communication signals according to context, because serotonergic neurons are responsive to social context, influence social behavior, and innervate auditory regions. Animals like lab mice can be excellent models for exploring how serotonin affects the primary neural systems involved in vocal perception, including within central auditory regions like the inferior colliculus (IC). Within the IC, serotonergic activity reflects not only the presence of a conspecific, but also the valence of a given social interaction. To assess whether serotonin can influence the perception of vocal signals in male mice, we manipulated serotonin systemically with an injection of its precursor 5-HTP, and locally in the IC with an infusion of fenfluramine, a serotonin reuptake blocker. Mice then participated in a behavioral assay in which males suppress their ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in response to the playback of female broadband vocalizations (BBVs), used in defensive aggression by females when interacting with males. Both 5-HTP and fenfluramine increased the suppression of USVs during BBV playback relative to controls. 5-HTP additionally decreased the baseline production of a specific type of USV and male investigation, but neither drug treatment strongly affected male digging or grooming. These findings show that serotonin modifies behavioral responses to vocal signals in mice, in part by acting in auditory brain regions, and suggest that mouse vocal behavior can serve as a useful model for exploring the mechanisms of context in human communication.

Abstract:Animal courtship and aggressive displays are dramatic, often sexually dimorphic behaviors that require the coordinated modulation of diverse motivational and motor circuits. In Alstons singing mice (Scotinomys teguina), a novel and elaborate advertisement vocalization is sexually dimorphic and steroid sensitive. Males sing more often than females, and on average male songs have more notes. Song is influenced by circulating androgens, but how such hormonal differences influence the diverse brain regions involved in vocal display is not understood. To characterize androgen-sensitive sites in the vocal motor pathway, we used two isoforms of pseudorabies virus (PRV) to double-label circuits ending in laryngeal and jaw muscles involved in vocalization, and co-labeled these neurons for androgen receptor (AR). Next we manipulated circulating androgens and observed the effects on AR distribution and male song. We find androgens drive coordinated changes in AR abundance across motor and motivational circuits, and both individual and group differences in song are associated with AR abundance. The results reveal how circulating androgens and the auto-regulation of androgen receptors can influence the diverse circuits necessary for elaborate advertisement displays.

Abstract:Acoustic communication plays a vital role in predator-prey interactions. Although habitat structure has been shown to affect anti-predator tactics, little is known about how animals vary their behaviors in response to predator calls or heterospecific alarm calls in different environments. Here we used sound playbacks to test the responses of Eurasian tree sparrows ( Passer montanus ) foraging in harvested/unharvested rice paddy and open residential area. In the first experiment, we tested their behavioral responses to dove calls, male common cuckoo ( Cuculus canorus ) calls, hawk-like calls mimicked by female common cuckoo, sparrowhawk ( Accipiter nisus ) calls, and human yell calls produced to scare birds (predator signal playbacks). In the second experiment, we tested their behavioral responses to the Japanese tit's ( Parus minor ) territorial songs and alarm calls (heterospecific alarm signal playbacks). Results showed that the tree sparrows had less fleeing in unharvested ripe rice paddy than in harvested rice paddy and open residential area. In predator signal playbacks, call type affected the escape behavior of sparrows in unharvested rice paddy and open residential area but not harvested rice paddy. In alarm signal playbacks, tit alarm calls evoked more fleeing than territorial songs in harvested rice paddy and open residential area but not unharvested rice paddy. These results suggest that anthropogenic habitat changes may influence avian anti-predator tactics.

Abstract:Mating and aggression are innate social behaviours that are controlled by subcortical circuits in the extended amygdala and hypothalamus 1,2,3,4 . The bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNSTpr) is a node that receives input encoding sex-specific olfactory cues from the medial amygdala 5,6 , and which in turn projects to hypothalamic nuclei that control mating 7,8,9 (medial preoptic area (MPOA)) and aggression 9,10,11,12,13,14 (ventromedial hypothalamus, ventrolateral subdivision (VMHvl)), respectively 15 . Previous studies have demonstrated that male aromatase-positive BNSTpr neurons are required for mounting and attack, and may identify conspecific sex according to their overall level of activity 16 . However, neural representations in BNSTpr, their function and their transformations in the hypothalamus have not been characterized. Here we performed calcium imaging 17,18 of male BNSTpr Esr1 neurons during social behaviours. We identify distinct populations of female- versus male-tuned neurons in BNSTpr, with the former outnumbering the latter by around two to one, similar to the medial amygdala and MPOA but opposite to VMHvl, in which male-tuned neurons predominate 6,9,19 . Chemogenetic silencing of BNSTpr Esr1 neurons while imaging MPOA Esr1 or VMHvl Esr1 neurons in behaving animals showed, unexpectedly, that the male-dominant sex-tuning bias in VMHvl was inverted to female-dominant whereas a switch from sniff- to mount-selective neurons during mating was attenuated in MPOA. Our data also indicate that BNSTpr Esr1 neurons are not essential for conspecific sex identification. Rather, they control the transition from appetitive to consummatory phases of male social behaviours by shaping sex- and behaviour-specific neural representations in the hypothalamus.

Abstract:Anthropogenic land use, including urbanization, has caused population declines across diverse taxa including arthropods and songbirds. Declines in one taxa can impact other groups based on its role in a community. In particular, declines in lower trophic level taxa, such as arthropods, could have negative impacts on higher trophic level species. Here, we examined how urban arthropod communities compare to rural ones and how these differences may impact song sparrow ( Melospiza melodia ) nestlings living in urban and rural habitats. We quantified differences in the abundance, biomass, and diversity of arthropod communities between replicate urban and rural sites. At the same sites, we also compared the stomach contents of nestlings because song sparrows rely upon arthropod prey during development. We found that the arthropod community in urban habitats had lower average abundance, average biomass, and Simpson's diversity compared to rural habitats. The arthropod communities also significantly differed in the relative abundance of some higher trophic level taxa, such as spiders. However, we found no difference in the total stomach content mass, nor the mass of invertebrate food items in the stomachs of urban and rural nestlings. Thus, though urban habitats had lower availability of arthropods, possibly driven by the simplification of urban habitats, there was no evidence of a negative impact on the quantity of food provided to urban song sparrow nestlings.

Abstract:Abstract Animals in urban areas that experience frequent exposure to humans often behave differently than those in less urban areas, such as exhibiting less vigilance or anti-predator behavior. These behavioral shifts may be an adaptive response to urbanization, but it may be costly if animals in urban areas also exhibit reduced anti-predator behavior in the presence of natural predators. In trials with only a human observer as the stimulus, urban squirrels exhibited reduced vigilance and anti-predator behavior compared to those in less urban areas. Next, we exposed squirrels in multiple urban and less urban sites to acoustic playbacks of a control stimulus (non-predatory bird calls), a natural predator (hawk), and dogs and recorded their vigilance and three different anti-predator behaviors when a human approached them while either broadcasting one of these three playbacks or no playbacks at all. Squirrels at urban sites also did not differ in their behavioral responses to the playbacks from possible predators (hawks or dogs) when they were compared to those at less urban sites exposed to these playbacks. Urban squirrels also exhibited increased vigilance and anti-predator behavior when exposed to a human paired with hawk playbacks compared to the control playbacks. Together, our results indicate that urban squirrels did perceive and assess risk to the natural predator appropriately despite exhibiting increased tolerance to humans. These results provide little support for the hypothesis that increased tolerance to humans causes animals to lose their fear of natural predators.
