Abstract:In this work, we report a fiber optic biosensor for the label-free detection of vitamin D, by targeting the major circulating form of D3 in human body, i.e., 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)D3). The sensing platform relies on a long period grating (LPG) written into an unconventional fiber, i.e., double cladding fiber (DCF) with W-type refractive index profile. The sensitivity to surrounding medium is enhanced by chemical etching of the outer cladding as the working point of the device is tuned to the mode transition region. The DCF structure allows to combine the enhancement of the sensitivity (up to −1400 nm/RIU) with a good visibility of the grating resonance band (>10 dB) and long-term stability due to an all-silica structure. Moreover, the LPG transducer is coated with a nanosized layer of graphene oxide to provide carboxylic functional groups (-COOH) for the grafting of the biological recognition element for vitamin D3, i.e., a 25(OH)D3 specific antibody. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first evidence of a fiber optic biosensor for the detection of vitamin D3, which was performed using concentrations within the clinically relevant range of 1–1000 ng/mL and achieving a low limit of detection below 1.0 ng/mL in buffer solution that is well comparable with the state of the art. Finally, the performance of the biosensor was also evaluated in a complex medium with interfering proteins at physiological concentration obtaining promising results.

Abstract:Optical fibers can be effective biosensors when employed in early‐stage diagnostic point‐of‐care devices as they can avoid interference from molecules with similar redox potentials. Nevertheless, their sensitivity needs to be improved for real‐world applications, especially for small‐molecule detection. This work demonstrates an optical microfiber biosensor for dopamine (DA) detection based on the DA‐binding‐induced aptamer conformational transitions that occur at plasmonic coupling sites on a double‐amplified nanointerface. The sensor exhibits ultrahigh sensitivity when detecting DA molecules at the single‐molecule level; additionally, this work provides an approach for overcoming optical device sensitivity limits, further extending optical fiber single‐molecule detection to a small molecule range (e.g., DA and metal ions). The selective energy enhancement and signal amplification at the binding sites effectively avoid nonspecific amplification of the whole fiber surface which might lead to false‐positive results. The sensor can detect single‐molecule DA signals in body‐fluids. It can detect the released extracellular DA levels and monitor the DA oxidation process. An appropriate aptamer replacement allows the sensor to be used for the detection of other target small molecules and ions at the single‐molecule level. This technology offers alternative opportunities for developing noninvasive early‐stage diagnostic point‐of‐care devices and flexible single‐molecule detection techniques in theoretical research. Abstract:On-site monitoring of vitamin D levels is subject matter of immediate attention owing to the serious aftermath of its long standing deficiency. Therefore, a novel and efficient voltammetric immunosensing of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)VD3) has been experimented based on an advanced sensing platform composed of meso-microporous silica-zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (MSS-Z8) with highly enhanced surface area (SBET, MSS-Z8 (643.4 m2g-1) > SBET, MSS (49.95 m2g-1)), embedded with gold particles (mass loading of 82 μg), particularly of microcubic morphology (MC-Au). Further, the MC-Au/MSS-Z8/FTO platform was fashioned with antibody specific to 25(OH)VD3 via interaction between Au and abundant -SH groups present on the antibody surface. After optimization of operational parameters, the Ab/MC-Au/MSS-Z8/FTO immunosensor was employed for the determination of 25(OH)VD3 within 0.01-106 pg mL-1 concentration range through differential pulse voltammetry technique in [Fe(CN)6]3-/4-. Thus, 0.01 pg mL-1 concentration of 25(OH)VD3 was the experimental limit of detection of the immunosensor. Further, upon examination of various analytical parameters, it turns out that the immunosensor exhibited low theoretical LOD (0.23 pg mL-1) and LOQ (0.76 pg mL-1), wide linear range (0.01-106 pg mL-1), ultra-sensitivity (143.9 μA [log (pg mL-1)]-1 cm-2), adequate reproducibility (RSD ≤1.23%) and acceptable shelf life. Most importantly, the immunosensor presented proficient performance with spiked human serum samples (Recovery = 97.20-100.7%, RSD value < 5.6%), evincing the adequacy of present biosensing approach.

Abstract:A novel sensing strategy is presented to monitor receptor-target pair interactions at ultra-low concentrations without functionalization processes. The biosensing is made by a sensitive chip and a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) probe connected in series, both built up on multimode plastic optical fibers (POFs). The SPR probe is a conventional D-shaped POF platform, while the capture platform consists of three microholes, containing a few hundred nanoliters each, made in the core of a modified POF. The microholes are filled with a specific receptor solution, which selectively captures the target present in the samples dropped over the filled microholes. Any variation occurring in the microholes due to the molecule binding processes changes the mode profile of the propagated light in the POF's core, modifying the plasmonic effects proportionally to the phenomena under scrutiny. As a proof of concept, the interactions of two receptor-target pairs, estradiol and cortisol to the respective receptors, namely Estrogen Receptor alpha protein (ER) and Glucocorticoid Receptor (GR), were monitored over time in the attomolar range. The receptor-target pair interactions are observed at ultra-low concentrations (order of aM) by monitoring the resonance wavelength shift over time. The proposed sensing approach stands for a novel class of laboratory instrumentation with unprecedented capabilities in terms of compactness, ultra-high sensitivity and low-cost.

Abstract:Monitoring immune-supporting micronutrients such as vitamins C and D is relevant as these nutrients are involved in metabolic pathways to fight against viruses and bacteria. The simultaneous determination of these biomarkers in the same sample volume is challenging, with multistep protocols if labels and redox probes are required. In this paper, we report on a flexible bioelectronic chip combining a 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 metabolite (25(OH)D3) immunoassay with an electrocatalytic assay for vitamin C. One of the sensors in the chip was made with graphitic carbon nitride modified with the electroactive dye toluidine blue, decorated with electrodeposited 6.5 nm gold nanoparticles, and coated with a layer of anti-25(OH)D3 antibodies. With this sensor, 25(OH)D3 could be detected via chronoamperometry at concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 700 ng mL–1 with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.01 ng mL–1. The other sensor had 24.7 nm Pearls carbon nanoparticles whose electroactivity permitted vitamin C detection in the range from 1 to 140 μM, with an LOD of 0.12 μM. Since the chip is flexible and does not contain labels or redox probes, it has the potential for use in wearable devices to track vitamins in bodily fluids, aiding personalized nutrition by preventing deficiencies and toxicity.

Abstract:Optical biosensors, especially those based on plasmonic structures, have emerged recently as a potential tool for disease diagnostics. Plasmonic biosensors have demonstrated impressive benefits for the label‐free detection of trace biomarkers in human serum. However, widespread applications of these technologies are hindered because of their insufficient sensitivity, their relatively complex chemical immobilization processes, and the use of prism couplers. Accordingly, a sandwiched plasmon ruler (SW‐PR) based on a Au nanohole array with ultrahigh sensitivity arising from the plasmonic coupling effect is developed. Highly confined surface charges caused by Bloch wave surface plasmon polarizations substantially increase the coupling efficiency. This platform exhibits thickness sensitivity as high as 61 nm nm−1 and can detect at least 200 000‐fold lower analyte concentrations than a nanowell sensing platform with the same wavelength shift. Additionally, the sandwiched plasmonic biosensor allows precise and label‐free testing of clinical biomarkers, namely C‐reactive protein and procalcitonin, in patient serum samples without requiring a sophisticated prism coupler, extra antibodies, or a chemical immobilization technique. This study yields new insight into the structural design of plasmon rulers and will open exciting avenues for disease diagnosis and therapy follow‐up at the point‐of‐care.

Abstract:Vitamin D (VD) deficiency is a global health concern due to its serious health impacts, and at present, the monitoring of VD status is expensive. Here, a novel immunosensor for sensitive and label-free detection of 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 (25VD3) is reported. Nanostructured cerium(IV) oxide (nCeO2) was anchored onto carbon cloth (CC) via electrophoretic deposition to fabricate a nanoplatform (nCeO2/CC). Subsequently, bioactive molecules (anti-25VD3 and BSA) were introduced to fabricate the nanobioplatform BSA/anti-25VD3/nCeO2/CC as an immunosensor. The analytical performance of the developed immunosensor was studied towards 25VD3 detection. The immunosensor provides a broad linear range of 1-200 ng mL-1, high sensitivity of 2.08 μA ng−1 mL cm−2, a detection limit of 4.63 ng mL−1, and a response time of 15 min, which is better than that of previous reports. The biosensor exhibited high selectivity, good reproducibility, and excellent stability for about 45 days. The potential application of the proposed immunosensor was observed for real serum samples towards 25VD3 detection that demonstrated a high correlation with the conventional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Abstract:Rapid and label-free detection of very low concentrations of biomarkers in disease diagnosis or therapeutic drug monitoring is essential to prevent disease progression in Point of Care Testing. For this purpose, we propose a multi-purpose optical Bio-Micro-Electro-Mechanical-System (BioMEMS) sensing platform which can precisely measure very small changes of biomolecules concentrations in plasma-like buffer samples. This is realized by the development of an interferometric detection method on highly sensitive MEMS transducers (cantilevers). This approach facilitates the precise analysis of the obtained results to determine the analyte type and its concentrations. Furthermore, the proposed multi-purpose platform can be used for a wide range of biological assessments in various concentration levels by the use of an appropriate bioreceptor and the control of its coating density on the cantilever surface. In this study, the present system is prepared for the identification of digoxin medication in its therapeutic window for therapeutic drug monitoring as a case study. The experimental results represent the repeatability and stability of the proposed device as well as its capability to detect the analytes in less than eight minutes for all samples. In addition, according to the experiments carried out for very low concentrations of digoxin in plasma-like buffer, the detection limit of LOD = 300 fM and the maximum sensitivity of S = 5.5 × 10 12 AU/M are achieved for the implemented biosensor. The present ultrasensitive multi-purpose BioMEMS sensor can be a fully-integrated, cost-effective device to precisely analyze various biomarker concentrations for various biomedical applications.

Abstract:The slow light sensor techniques have been applied to bio-related detection in the past decades. However, similar testing-systems are too large to carry to a remote area for diagnosis or point-of-care testing. This study demonstrated a fully automatic portable biosensing system based on the microring resonator. An optical-fiber array mounted on a controller based micro-positioning system, which can be interfaced with MATLAB to locate a tentative position for light source and waveguide coupling alignment. Chip adapter and microfluidic channel could be packaged as a product such that it is cheap to be manufactured and can be disposed of after every test conducted. Thus, the platform can be more easily operated via an ordinary user without expertise in photonics. It is designed based on conventional optical communication wavelength range. The C-band superluminescent-light-emitting-diode light source couples in/out the microring sensor to obtain quasi-TE mode by grating coupler techniques. For keeping a stable chemical binding reaction, the cost-effective microfluidic pump was developed to offer a specific flow rate of 20 μL/min by using a servo-motor, an Arduino board, and a motor driver. The subwavelength grating metamaterial ring resonator shows highly sensitive sensing performance via surface index changes due to biomarker adhered on the sensor. The real-time peak-shift monitoring shows 10 μg/mL streptavidin detection of limit based on the biotin-streptavidin binding reaction. Through the different specific receptors immobilized on the sensor surface, the system can be utilized on the open applications such as heavy metal detection, gas sensing, virus examination, and cancer marker diagnosis.

Abstract:The need for miniaturized biological sensors which can be easily integrated into medical needles and catheters for in vivo liquid biopsies with ever-increasing performances has stimulated the interest of researchers in lab-on-fiber (LOF) technology. LOF devices arise from the integration of functional materials at the nanoscale on the tip of optical fibers, thus endowing a simple optical fiber with advanced functionalities and enabling the realization of high-performance LOF biological sensors. Consequently, in 2017, we demonstrated the first optical fiber meta-tip (OFMT), consisting of the integration of plasmonic metasurfaces (MSs) on the optical fiber end-face which represented a major breakthrough along the LOF technology roadmap. Successively, we demonstrated that label-free biological sensors based on the plasmonic OFMT are able to largely overwhelm the performance of a standard plasmonic LOF sensor, in view of the extraordinary light manipulation capabilities of plasmonic array exploiting phase gradients. To further improve the overall sensitivity, a labelled sensing strategy is here suggested. To this end, we envision the possibility to realize a novel class of labelled LOF optrodes based on OFMT, where an all-dielectric MS, designed to enhance the fluorescence emission by a labelled target molecule, is integrated on the end-face of a multimode fiber (MMF). We present a numerical environment to compute the fluorescence enhancement factor collected by the MMF, when on its tip a Silicon MS is laid, consisting of an array of cylindrical nanoantennas, or of dimers or trimers of cylindrical nanoantennas. According to the numerical results, a suitable design of the dielectric MS allows for a fluorescence enhancement up to three orders of magnitudes. Moreover, a feasibility study is carried out to verify the possibility to fabricate the designed MSs on the termination of multimode optical fibers using electron beam lithography followed by reactive ion etching. Finally, we analyze a real application scenario in the field of biosensing and evaluate the degradation in the fluorescence enhancement performances, taking into account the experimental conditions. The present work, thus, provides the main guidelines for the design and development of advanced LOF devices based on the fluorescence enhancement for labelled biosensing applications.
Travel medicine considerations for North American immigrants visiting friends and relatives.

Abstract:CONTEXT In the United States, 10% of the population was born outside of its borders. Immigrants and their children frequently return to visit their homeland, referred to as visiting friends and relatives (VFRs). They account for a disproportionately high volume of international travel. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION Searches of MEDLINE, World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, International Society of Travel Medicine, and American Society of Tropical Medicine computerized databases, conference proceedings and abstracts, US Census Bureau, bibliographies of pertinent articles, and travel medicine texts. Priority was given to recent (1996-2003) evidence, addressing VFR travelers. General sources including travel medicine and immigrant health were also used. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS Immigrants visiting friends and relatives experience excessive rates of travel-related morbidity and mortality. Lack of pretravel care is common due to patient and clinician barriers to care, preexisting health beliefs, and incomplete childhood vaccinations. Travel patterns increase risk with VFRs traveling to high-risk destinations. Susceptibility to infectious and noninfectious illnesses is often increased because of multiple preexisting medical problems and extremes of age. Infectious diseases differ in etiology and magnitude from those of traditional travelers. For example with malaria, VFRs are frequently prescribed inappropriate prophylaxis or take none at all, have longer stays, spend time in high-risk areas, and do not appropriately adhere to chemoprophylaxis regimens. Effective pretravel health advice, guidelines, and services for this high-risk population are essential. There are already a number of useful and readily available databases that may aid clinicians in providing optimal travel-related preventive and therapeutic care. CONCLUSIONS Immigrants who are visitors of friends and relatives in other countries account for a high volume of international travelers and are at markedly increased risk of travel-related illness. New strategies are needed to properly address the needs of VFR travelers. Pretravel services should be convenient, accessible, affordable, culturally competent, and if possible, located within clinics serving immigrant populations. Clinicians caring for VFRs should be knowledgeable about their travel-related risks and have access to regularly updated, detailed pretravel health information.
Real-Time Small Molecule Binding Detection Using A Label-Free Photonic Crystal Biosensor

Abstract:We have demonstrated real-time, label-free detection of small molecule binding using a novel optical biosensor. This sensor is a recently developed sensing platform incorporating a one-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) structure in a total-internal-reflection (TIR) geometry (PC-TIR). This simple configuration functions as an open Fabry-Perot resonator which provides a narrow optical resonance to enable label-free, highly sensitive detection of analyte molecules on the sensing surface in the enhanced evanescent field. Moreover, when the differential intensity modulation during binding is measured, a very high detection sensitivity can be obtained, and real-time binding observed. The well-studied biotin-streptavidin system was chosen to calibrate the detection limit for small molecule detection. Effective surface functionalization methods for streptavidin immobilization on the silica sensing surface were investigated, and analyte biotin molecules specifically binding to the sensing surface were monitored in real time. The binding of the smallest molecule D-Biotin, with a molecular weight of 244 Da, was easily experimentally observed with a high signal to noise ratio, which shows that the PC-TIR sensor has great potential to be a high-sensitivity and high-throughput sensing technology for small molecule binding analysis.

Abstract:Abstract Biosensors are indispensable tools for public, global, and personalized healthcare as they provide tests that can be used from early disease detection and treatment monitoring to preventing pandemics. We introduce single-wavelength imaging biosensors capable of reconstructing spectral shift information induced by biomarkers dynamically using an advanced data processing technique based on an optimal linear estimator. Our method achieves superior sensitivity without wavelength scanning or spectroscopy instruments. We engineered diatomic dielectric metasurfaces supporting bound states in the continuum that allows high-quality resonances with accessible near-fields by in-plane symmetry breaking. The large-area metasurface chips are configured as microarrays and integrated with microfluidics on an imaging platform for real-time detection of breast cancer extracellular vesicles encompassing exosomes. The optofluidic system has high sensing performance with nearly 70 1/RIU figure-of-merit enabling detection of on average 0.41 nanoparticle/μm 2 and real-time measurements of extracellular vesicles binding from down to 204 femtomolar solutions. Our biosensors provide the robustness of spectrometric approaches while substituting complex instrumentation with a single-wavelength light source and a complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor camera, paving the way toward miniaturized devices for point-of-care diagnostics.

Abstract:A long-range surface plasmonic resonance (LR-SPR) biosensor modified with double-antibody sandwich immunoassay and plasmonic coupling is demonstrated for human-immunoglobulin G detection with a low limit of detection (LOD). The double-antibody sandwich immunoassay dramatically changes the average refractive index of the medium layer on the sensor surface. The near-field electron coupling between the localized surface plasmon and the long-range surface plasmon leads to a significant perturbation of the evanescent field. The large penetration depth and the long propagation distance of the long-range surface plasmonic waves facilitate the LR-SPR sensor in the detection of biological macromolecules. The unique light absorption characteristic of the nanocomposite material in the sensor provides the in situ self-compensation for the disturbance. Therefore, besides the inherent advantages of optical fiber sensors, the developed biosensor can realize the detection of biomolecules with high sensitivity, low LOD and high accuracy and reliability. Experimental results demonstrate that the LOD of the biosensor is as low as 0.11 μg/mL in the detection of the phosphate-buffered saline sample, and the spike-and-repetition rate is 105.56% in the detection of the real serum sample, which partly shows the practicability of the biosensor. This indicates that the LR-SPR biosensor provides better response compared with existing similar sensors and can be regarded as a valuable method for biochemical analysis and disease detection.

Abstract:The detection of small molecules has increasingly attracted the attention of researchers because of its important physiological function. In this manuscript, we propose a novel optical sensor which uses an optofluidic microbubble resonator (OFMBR) for the highly sensitive detection of small molecules. This paper demonstrates the binding of the small molecule biotin to surface-immobilized streptavidin with a detection limit reduced to 0.41 pM. Furthermore, binding specificity of four additional small molecules to surface-immobilized streptavidin is shown. A label-free OFMBR-based optical sensor has great potential in small molecule detection and drug screening because of its high sensitivity, low detection limit, and minimal sample consumption.
Nanozyme‐Catalyzed Metasurface Plasmon Sensor‐Based Portable Ultrasensitive Optical Quantification Platform for Cancer Biomarker Screening

Abstract:A nanozyme‐linked immunosorbent surface plasmon resonance biosensor integrating the low‐cost nano cup chip with the Au@Pt nanoflowers is developed, which can be used for an ultrasensitive (fM‐scale), rapid (minute‐level), and portable (pocket‐size) test for biomarker diagnosis. In order to verify the universality of the platform, three cancer biomarkers (alpha‐fetoprotein, carcinoembryonic antigen, carbohydrate antigen 125) are selected for quantitative detection. Most importantly, clinical samples are used to verify the accuracy and stability of the platform. Developing plasmonic biosensors that are low‐cost, portable, and relatively simple to operate remains challenging. Herein, a novel metasurface plasmon‐etch immunosensor is described, namely a nanozyme‐linked immunosorbent surface plasmon resonance biosensor, for the ultrasensitive and specific detection of cancer biomarkers. Gold‐silver composite nano cup array metasurface plasmon resonance chip and artificial nanozyme‐labeled antibody are used in two‐way sandwich analyte detection. Changes in the biosensor's absorption spectrum are measured before and after chip surface etching, which can be applied to immunoassays without requiring separation or amplification. The device achieved a limit of alpha‐fetoprotein (AFP) detection < 21.74 fM, three orders of magnitude lower than that of commercial enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay kits. Additionally, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125) are used for quantitative detection to verify the universality of the platform. More importantly, the accuracy of the platform is verified using 60 clinical samples; compared with the hospital results, the three biomarkers achieve high sensitivity (CEA: 95.7%; CA125: 90.9%; AFP: 86.7%) and specificity (CEA: 97.3%; CA125: 93.9%; AFP: 97.8%). Due to its rapidity, ease of use, and high throughput, the platform has the potential for high‐throughput rapid detection to facilitate cancer screening or early diagnostic testing in biosensing.

Abstract:Vitamin D 3 (VD 3 ) is the main form of vitamin D and an essential nutrient for maintaining human life. Currently, traditional methods for detecting 25-hydroxyvitamin D3(25(OH)D 3 ) are complex and expensive. In this study, we constructed an accurate, sensitive, simple, and cost-effective label-free biosensor based on an aptamer for the detection of 25(OH)D 3 . The aptamer-modified sulfhydryl adopted self-assembly as a way to stably immobilize at the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface modified by gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Upon 25(OH)D 3 binding to the aptamer, the complexes inhibit electron transfer at the electrode surface, leading to reduced [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3−/4− redox peak current. Consequently, the quantity of 25(OH)D 3 that interacts with the electrode-bound aptamer correlates with the observed electric current response values. The Aptamer/AuNPs/GCE aptasensor achieved direct and highly sensitive detection of 25(OH)D 3 over a wide concentration range (1.0–1000 nM), with a limit of detection of 1.0 nM. At the same time, other molecules with a similar structure, such as 25(OH)D 2 , Vitamin D 3 , and Vitamin D 2 , had lower response interference than 25(OH)D 3 . Therefore, this biosensor has great potential to become a portable diagnostic device for 25(OH)D 3 .

Abstract:The identification and quantification of biomarkers with innovative technologies is an urgent need for the precise diagnosis and follow up of human diseases. Body fluids offer a variety of informative biomarkers, which are traditionally measured with time-consuming and expensive methods. In this context, lateral flow tests (LFTs) represent a rapid and low-cost technology with a sensitivity that is potentially improvable by chemiluminescence biosensing. Here, an LFT based on gold nanoparticles functionalized with antibodies labeled with the enzyme horseradish peroxidase is combined with a lensless biosensor. This biosensor comprises four Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM) coupled in close proximity to the LFT strip. Microfluidics for liquid handling complete the system. The development and the setup of the biosensor is carefully described and characterized. C-reactive protein was selected as a proof-of-concept biomarker to define the limit of detection, which resulted in about 0.8 pM when gold nanoparticles were used. The rapid readout (less than 5 min) and the absence of sample preparation make this biosensor promising for the direct and fast detection of human biomarkers.

Ultrasensitive Detection of Endocrine Disruptors Via Superfine Plasmonic Spectral Combs

Abstract:The apparent increase in hormone-induced cancers and disorders of the reproductive tract has led to a growing demand for new technologies capable of detecting endocrine disruptors. However, a long-lasting challenge unaddressed is how to achieve ultrahigh sensitive, continuous, and in situ measurement with a portable device for in-field and remote environmental monitoring. Here we demonstrate a simple-to-implement plasmonic optical fiber biosensing platform to achieve an improved light–matter interaction and advanced surface chemistry for ultrasensitive detection of endocrine disruptors. Our platform is based on a gold-coated highly tilted fiber Bragg grating that excites high-density narrow cladding mode spectral combs that overlap with the broad absorption of the surface plasmon for high accuracy interrogation, hence enabling the ultrasensitive monitoring of refractive index changes at the fiber surface. Through the use of estrogen receptors as the model, we design an estradiol–streptavidin conjugate with the assistance of molecular dynamics, converting the specific recognition of environmental estrogens (EEs) by estrogen receptor into surface-based affinity bioassay for protein. The ultrasensitive platform with conjugate-induced amplification biosensing approach enables the subsequent detection for EEs down to 1.5 × 10 −3 ng ml −1 estradiol equivalent concentration level, which is one order lower than the defined maximal E 2 level in drinking water set by the Japanese government. The capability to detect EEs down to nanogram per liter level is the lowest limit of detection for any estrogen receptor-based detection reported thus far. Its compact size, flexible shape, and remote operation capability open the way for detecting other endocrine disruptors with ultrahigh sensitivity and in various hard-to-reach spaces, thereby having the potential to revolutionize environment and health monitoring.
