Abstract:Thermochemical remediation of petroleum-contaminated soil (PCS) has attracted increased attention. Pyrolysis is one of an important thermochemical treatment technology. The pyrolysis behavior of PCS and the main gaseous products evolved were investigated by means of a simultaneous thermogravimetric analyzer (TG) coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and mass spectrometry (MS). Pyrolysis residue characteristics were determined by X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), FTIR, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results revealed that the pyrolysis process of PCS was divided into water evaporation, volatilization of light volatile, degradation of low/high boiling point organic matters, and decomposition of inorganic mineral. The increase of heating rate would lead to the shift of thermal profiles to a higher temperature region and the increase of mass loss rate, without changing the patterns of thermal degradation of PCS. In addition, CO2, the most important gaseous product, was released in two temperature regions of 700–1090 K and 1090–1220 K. The trace pollution gaseous product SO2 was discharged above 1100 K. After pyrolysis, the organic matters were significantly reduced, and the inorganic minerals such as CaCO3 and BaSO4 were decomposed. The sulfur in PCS mainly existed in the form of sulfate-S, sulfonic acid-S or sulfone-S, sulfoxide-S, aromatic-S, and aliphatic-S. During pyrolysis, sulfate-S was continuously decreased, while the other four forms of organic-S may be transformed into each other and finally partially stabilized in the pyrolysis residue.

Thermal Kinetics of PFAS and Precursors in Soil: Experiment and Surface Simulation in Temperature-Time Plane

Abstract:Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are chemically and thermally stable due to the presence of carbon-fluorine (C-F) bond in their molecular structures, hence have been previously formulated as firefighting in-gredients. During the firefighting process, however, owing to the high temperature, PFAS can be potentially degraded, particularly for PFAS precursors that contain non-C-F bonds, which is studied herein by exposing PFAS-contaminated soil in a muffle furnace oven. Different temperatures and time intervals are applied to the real soil sample to mimic the firing process and to evaluate the degradation and conversion of PFAS. This thermal treatment can not only degrade precursors (e.g. 6:2 fluorotelomer sulphonate), but also degrade perfluoroalkyl carboxylates (PFCA, e.g. perfluorooctanoic acid PFOA) and perfluoroalkyl sulfonates (PFSA, e.g. perfluorooctane sulfonate PFOS). The concentration dependence of the PFAS on temperature and time is fitted using a 2D Gaussian surface to simulate the complex thermal kinetic, and to compare with the traditional approach such as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) (1D dependence on temperature only). The 2D simulation can directly visu-alise the thermal kinetic of individual or sum PFAS in the complex temperature-time plane, which depends on the sample background and particularly on the coexist PFAS precursors. Overall, this study provides a simple approach to monitor and optimise the thermal treatment of the PFAS-contaminated soil.
Disturbance and Restoration of Soil Microbial Communities after In-Situ Thermal Desorption in a Chlorinated Hydrocarbon Contaminated Site.

Abstract:Thermal desorption technology has been widely used for the remediation of organic contaminated soil, but the heating process may alter the soil properties and its safety reutilization. After thermal remediation, the target pollutants including chloroform, 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,1,2-trichloroethane, 1,2,3-trichloropropane and vinyl chloride in the chlorinated hydrocarbon contaminated site were reduced significantly. The soil microbial α-diversity was also reduced by more than half. Notably, the relative abundance of Chloroflexi decreased by 9.0%, while Firmicutes had a 9.0% increase after thermal remediation. By water regulation and exogenous microorganism addition, the soil microbial community could not be restored to its initial state before thermal remediation in a relatively short time (30 days). The relative abundance of Proteobacteria increased from 25.4% to 41.7% and 51.0% by water regulation and exogenous microorganism addition, respectively. The modularity of the microbial co-occurrence network was strengthened after microbial restoration, but the interaction among microorganisms was weakened. Thermal remediation might be conducive to the C- and N-cycle related processes, but severely weakened the sulfide oxidation processes. Notably, microbial restoration would benefit the recovery of the S-cycle functional groups. These results provided a new perspective for the safety reutilization of soil after thermal remediation.
Effects of Thermal Desorption Temperature Up to 500°C on the Thermophysical Properties and Fertility of Soil in Organic-Contaminated Sites

Abstract:High-temperature thermal desorption is effective for remediating organic-contaminated sites, but its damage to soil functions and high energy consumption raise concerns. In this work, the variation of fertility indicators of two soils with thermal treatment temperature was investigated experimentally. To overcome the difficulties in measuring soil thermophysical properties under sealing and high-temperature conditions, two apparatus matching with the Hot Disk device were established and by which massive data were measured. The results show that, as temperature rises up to 500°C, the combustion and decomposition of organic components and soil minerals gradually enhance, leading to a decrease in most fertility indicators, but an increase in grain size and pH. Available phosphorus and exchangeable potassium decrease with temperature rise first, but increase over 400°C. Soil thermal conductivity and specific heat are positively correlated with temperature and water content. Water diffusion will intensify over 40∼60°C, leading to an intense increase in soil thermal conductivity. The results are expected to provide data basis and theoretical guidance for the comprehensive consideration of remediation effects, land reuse, and energy consumption in practical applications of thermal desorption remediation.

Abstract:The paper presents the results of an experimental study conducted to investigate PAHs behavior during non-oxidant thermal decontamination of soil samples contaminated with petroleum products. The study focused on the assessment of the concentration levels for different PAHs species present in pyrolysis products after the treatment of contaminated soil samples. Pyrolysis experiments were performed using a horizontal tubular reactor. The contaminated soil samples were treated in inert controlled atmosphere (nitrogen). The treatment period varied between 30 and 60min at a temperature range of 350°C–650°C. Chemical analyses were performed to compare the thermal degradation mechanism and the pollutants generation in the flue gases of the pyrolysis process. The present research study identifies and quantifies the concentration level of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from the solid and gaseous phases of the pyrolysis products, as well as from the condensates produced during the process. The amount of the organic contaminants was determined using a GC/MS analyzer and Soxhlet extraction method. The results of the experiments revealed that pyrolysis is an efficient process that could be used to remove the PAHs from contaminated soil. For 650°C treatment temperature performed for 30min the thermal process registered a decontamination efficiency superior to 80%. The extension of the treatment period to 60min increased the decontamination efficiency to more than 90%.

Abstract:Microwave irradiation is a promising technology for the remediation of soil contaminated by organic contaminants. However, the roles of volatilization and decomposition in microwave removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil have not yet been quantitatively determined. A model describing the removal efficiency of benz(a)anthracene (BaA) at different treatment times and varied conditions was constructed, wherein BaA removal efficiency was positively and linearly correlated with soil temperature. BaA removal in soil was attributed to thermal volatilization (97.8%) and decomposition (2.2%). Radicals such as ∙OH and ∙O 2- were found to initiate BaA decomposition, the pathway of which was elucidated through HPLC-MS analysis, revealing benz(a)anthracene-7,12-dione as the main intermediate product. The new ideas and perspectives founded in this study offer theoretical support for microwave remediation of organic compound-contaminated sites.

Abstract:Thermal desorption (TD) is known as an effective technique to remediate PAHs-contaminated sites. However, effectively removing PAHs using TD while saving time, and energy, and minimizing soil damage remains a challenge. In this study, we examined the combined effects of various factors on the removal efficiency of pyrene (PYR) by TD and developed an optimal numerical model based on conducting a series of soil experiments. The results showed that temperature (T) and time (t) promoted the desorption of PYR, while water (Sw) and organic matter (fom) were just the opposite. Besides, water and organic matter had a synergistic effect proportionally. It was found that adjusting the soil-water ratio (which can be controlled by organic matter) maximized the desorption rate of PYR. An ideal Sw/fom 1.56 and a minimized recommended temperature (173 °C) were proposed based on the model. Finally, the efficacy of the optimized scheme was validated in real-world site soil. These findings not only mechanistically revealed the desorption behavior of PYR under the influence of various factors, but also provided an optimized scheme for efficiently removing PAHs using TD, thereby accelerating the remediation process and reducing energy consumption. The modeling ideas and conclusions obtained may be applicable to other PAHs, guiding the effective remediation of PAHs-polluted sites.
Evolution of soil DOM during thermal remediation below 100 °C: concentration, spectral characteristics and complexation ability

Abstract:The impact of thermal remediation on soil function has drawn increasing attention. So far, as the most active fraction of soil organic matter, the evolution of dissolved organic matter (DOM) during the thermal remediation lacks in-depth investigation, especially for the temperatures value below 100 °C. In this study, a series of soil thermal treatment experiments was conducted at 30, 60, and 90 °C during a 90-d period, where soil DOM concentration increased with heating temperature and duration. The molecular weight, functional groups content and aromaticity of DOM all decreased during the thermal treatment. The excitation-emission matrices (EEM) results suggested that humic acid-like substances transformed into fulvic acid-like substances (F III /F V increased from 0.27 to 0.44) during the heating process, and five DOM components were further identified by EEM-PARAFAC. The change of DOM structures and components indicated the decline of DOM stability and hydrophilicity, and can potentially change the bioavailability and mobility. Elevated temperature also resulted in the decline of DOM complexation ability, which may be caused by the loss of binding sites due to the decrease of polar function groups, aromatic structures and hydrophilic components. This study provides valuable information about the evolution of DOM during thermal remediation, which would potentially change the fate of metal ions and the effectiveness of the post-treatment technologies in the treated region.

Abstract:Thermal desorption techniques, destined for removing organic pollutants from contaminated soil, are reviewed with some emphasis on the removal of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and other semi-volatiles. Treatment temperature and time are the two key factors determining removal efficiency (RE), which is also influenced by soil texture, total pressure, carrier gas composition and heating rate. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) are selected as the most typical as well as widespread representative of semi-volatile POPs. In the presence of oxygen, PCB is converted into PCDF, leading to a rise in total TEQ (toxic equivalency quantity) even in case total PCB is diminishing. Thermal desorption and contaminant destruction and removal efficiency can be promoted by adding additives. The main mechanism of contaminants removal is desorption/evaporation, presumably accompanied by soil-catalysed dechlorination and decomposition. Thus, the soil treated is purified, yet the remaining contaminants are partly transferred to the gas phase. Dust extraction, condensation, and adsorption are frequently used to decrease the contaminant concentration in off-gas.
Organic fragments newly released from heat-treated peat soils create synergies with dissolved organic carbon to enhance Cr(VI) removal

Abstract:Surface fires occur naturally or anthropogenically and can raise the temperature at the soil surface up to 600 °C. The heat derived from the surface fire can be subsequently transferred into CO2-enriched subsoils. As a result, the chemical compositions of soil organic matter (SOM) may be altered in fire-impacted anaerobic environments, indirectly influencing the redox transformations of pollutants, such as Cr(VI). In this study, a peat soil was heated up to 600 °C with limited air flow to simulate the effects of heat on the SOM during surface fire events. Then, Cr(VI) removal, including reduction and sorption, by the heat-treated peat soils was determined in relation to changes in the soil organic components. The results showed that the amount of O-containing functional groups, –CH2/–CH3 units of aliphatic groups, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the SOM gradually decreased with an increase in the heating temperature. The removal of 0.1932 mM Cr(VI) did not exhibit a consistent decline along with the changes in these soil components. The heating temperatures of 200 and 250 °C were the thresholds that led to the decomposition of temperature-sensitive soil organic components such as lignin and other labile SOM. Such newly released organic fragments synergized lignin-like substances and carboxyl groups, resulting in up to 99% removal of the initially added Cr(VI). As the heating temperatures were increased from 300 to 600 °C, Cr(VI) reduction decreased from 66% to 20%. The black carbon-like materials and/or aromatic-containing moieties were the major components responsible for Cr(VI) reduction in 600°C-treated peat soils.

Abstract:Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) are emerging contaminants of increasing concern due to their toxicity for life and ecosystems, yet their formation, behavior and fate are poorly known. In particular, there is actually no knowledge on the formation of those radicals during the thermal treatment of soils containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Such knowledge is important because thermal treatment is a remediation method used to decontaminate soils by removing and degrading PAHs. Here, we studied the formation of radicals in three types of cultivated soils, bauxite soil, fluvo-aquic soil and chernozem soil, artificially contaminated by benzo[a]pyrene, during thermal treatment from 100 to 200 °C for 1 h, using electron paramagnetic resonance. Results show spins densities of radicals up to of 2.079 × 1017 spins/g for bauxite soil, 1.481 × 1017 spins/g for fluvo-aquic soil and 8.592 × 1016 spins/g for chernozem soil at 175 °C. The formed radicals exhibited multiple decays during their observable time and the shortest 1/e lifetimes of radicals up to 757.58 h. These findings are strengthened by EPFR-induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), O2·− and ·OH, which increased in concentrations from 100 to 200 °C. Overall, our results demonstrates for the first time that thermal treatment of PAHs-contaminated soils induces the formation of EPFRs and suggests that thermal treatment might not be a fully clean remediation method for soils as thermal treatment creates new contaminants.

Mechanisms and extended kinetic model of thermal desorption in organic-contaminated soil

Abstract:Thermal desorption is a preferred technology for site remediation due to its various advantages. To ensure the effective removal of different pollutants in practical applications, it is necessary to understand the kinetic behaviors and removal mechanisms of pollutants in thermal desorption process. This paper explored the thermal desorption processes of five organic pollutants (nitrobenzene, naphthalene, n-dodecane, 1-nitronaphthalene, and phenanthrene) at 50-350 °C in two different subsoils with 6-18% moisture content. The results suggested that the thermal desorption process was well-fitted by the exponential decay model (R2 = 0.972-0.999) and could be divided into two distinct stages. The first stage was relatively fast and highly influenced by soil moisture, while the second stage showed a slower desorption rate due to the constraints imposed by the soil texture and structure. The influence of soil moisture on thermal desorption depended on the octanol/water partition coefficient (KOW) of pollutants. Pollutants with log KOW values lower than the critical value exhibited enhanced thermal desorption, while those with log KOW values higher than the critical value were inhibited. The critical value of log KOW might be between 3.33 and 4.46. Changes in soil texture and structure caused by heating promoted thermal desorption, especially for naphthalene, 1-nitronaphthalene and phenanthrene. The differences in texture and structure between the two soils diminished as the temperature increased. Finally, an extended kinetic model under changing temperature conditions was derived, and the simulation results for the two subsoils were very close to the actual thermogravimetric results, with the differences ranging from -1.28% to 0.94% and from -0.67% to 1.35%, respectively. These findings propose new insights into the influencing mechanisms of soil moisture and structure on the thermal desorption of organic pollutants. The extended kinetic model can provide reference for future kinetic research and guide practical site remediation.

Abstract:As organic pollution of soil and groundwater increases, the effective and economical remediation of contaminated sites has drawn growing attention. In this study, running-water (RW) was designed to modify alkali-heat/persulfate (MAH/PS) for integrated remediation of an actual organic-contaminated site. The degradation efficiency mainly reached 60%-99% for Benz[a]anthracene, Benzo[a]pyrene and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs). MAH/PS was more effective in degrading Benzene and 1,2-Dichloroethane with simple molecular configurations. The pollutant degradation efficiencies decreased with increasing site depth and increased with increasing pollutant concentrations. Migration with RW enhanced site remediation. By monitoring the groundwater after remediation, it was found that residual TPHs presented anomalous diffusion; SO42- ranged from 8.00 to 237.00 mg L-1 to 8.00-290.00 mg L-1 and pH presented alkalescence (7.00-8.20). Mathematical models were established to describe the reaction process including the solubility equilibrium of calcium hydroxide, temperature equilibrium, and reaction kinetics. Moreover, MAH/PS provided a cost-saving approach for site remediation.

Abstract:This study investigated the microstructure transformation observed in an aging diesel-contaminated soil after thermochemical treatment (DT 150°C+PS ) to explore its impact on engineering reusability. Three thermal remediation procedures (i.e., DT 150°C , DT 350°C , and DT 550°C ) were selected as the control group. The results show that: (a) Pyrolytic carbon was produced in the DT 350°C and DT 550°C , while none was produced in DT 150°C and DT 150°C+PS ; (b) Iron-based minerals and organic matter in DT 150°C+PS , DT 350°C , and DT 550°C were combusted and decomposed to release the Fe(II) substances; under stronger oxidation environments, Fe(II) substances would further transform into more stable Fe(III) substances; and (c) Halloysites and illites were formed in DT 350°C , palygorskites and cordierites were formed in DT 550°C , and oxidation in DT 150°C+PS produced the sulfate minerals. The formed sulfate minerals in the DT 150°C+PS sample filled pores and provided the skeleton strength, resulting in high unconfined compressive strength and poor permeability. Using a self-developed assessment model, only the DT 150°C+PS sample showed an improvement (calculated as 2.96×10 −5 ) in engineering performance and other methods led to the deterioration of soil mechanical properties. Thermochemical treatment is more suitable for engineering reuse, and this study can provide a theoretical basis for evaluating the greener reusability of contaminated soil after thermal or thermochemical remediation.

Abstract:Soil contamination is an environmental issue due to increasing anthropogenic activities. Existing processes for soil remediation suffer from long treatment time and lack generality because of different sources, occurrences, and properties of pollutants. Here, we report a high-temperature electrothermal process for rapid, water-free remediation of multiple pollutants in soil. The temperature of contaminated soil with carbon additives ramps up to 1000 to 3000 °C as needed within seconds via pulsed direct current input, enabling the vaporization of heavy metals like Cd, Hg, Pb, Co, Ni, and Cu, and graphitization of persistent organic pollutants like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The rapid treatment retains soil mineral constituents while increases infiltration rate and exchangeable nutrient supply, leading to soil fertilization and improved germination rates. We propose strategies for upscaling and field applications. Techno-economic analysis indicates the process holds the potential for being more energy-efficient and cost-effective compared to soil washing or thermal desorption.

Abstract:Search for the biological sources of the ureide carbon atoms of uric acid has centered chiefly around compounds similar in structure to the ureide group of uric acid. One of the earliest studies on the precursors of uric acid was made by Wiener (3), who postulated that uric acid was formed by the condensation of 2 moles of urea with 1 of tartronic acid. Although this hypothesis was at first attractive, it has, however, been disproved as the mechanism of the biosynthesis of uric acid by several investigators using both in viva and in vitro techniques (4-10). Pyrimidines (11)) which are likewise related to purines, have also been excluded as precursors of uric acid, since they are oxidized almost quantitatively to urea by the mammal. More recent isotopic experiments of Plentl and Schoenheimer (12) also provide convincing evidence that pyrimidines do not participate in uric acid synthesis, A more serious difference of opinion, however, has persisted among investigators until recently concerning histidine and arginine as the precursors of purines or purine derivatives. The opening investigations on this subject were made by Ackroyd and Hopkins (13), who postulated that the imidazole nucleus of allantoin could be derived from either of these amino acids. Subsequent data obtained by comparing uric acid or allantoin excretion of animals fed diets high and low in these amino acids have not been altogether conclusive or in agreement (14-19). Results obtained by the isotope tracer technique, however, do not confirm the point of view that histidine or arginine may be precursors of uric acid (10). The feeding of N15-labeled ammonium citrate to rats and pigeons led to the incorporation of N15 into purines of the tissues and uric acid or allantoin of the excreta in much greater concentrations than in histidine or arginine of the tissue proteins. Abstract:Thermal treatment is a widely used remediation strategy for PFAS-contaminated materials such as soil, spent sorbents, and domestic waste. To better understand the effectiveness and environmental impact of thermal treatments for PFAS-contaminated materials, a fundamental understanding of PFAS thermal degradation mechanisms is required. This work aims to study the pyrolysis of six representative PFAS compounds, all of which have an eight-carbon length but with different functional groups. To assess the thermal stability and pyrolysis products of these six PFAS compounds, evolved gas analysis (EGA) was performed using thermogravimetric analysis/differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC) coupled with an infrared spectrometer (IR) and a mass spectrometer (MS), as well as pyrolysis-GCMS (Pyr-GCMS). The EGA data demonstrates that compounds with lower estimated vapor pressures were generally found to be more thermally labile, and the presence of an ionic bond necessitates higher temperatures for pyrolysis. Pyrolysis at 900 °C yielded a variety of fluorinated organic compounds at significant signals. Tetrafluoroethene constituted the majority of the Pyr-GCMS signal for all the compounds. Moreover, a significant fraction of detected products was unable to be identified, underscoring a need for better tools to help with the identification of unknowns. Pyrolysis can occur through random chain scission, scission of the functional group, scission of the terminal CF 3 group, and HF elimination. Some compounds may undergo more complete beta-scission to produce smaller pyrolysis products compared to others. The presence of acidic protons within the functional group can help facilitate HF elimination, whereas the salt form of a PFAS compound is less likely to undergo HF elimination. Termination of radical intermediates can either be recombination with a CF 3 radical or hydrogen abstraction (H-abstraction). Observed hydrogen-substituted products indicate that functional groups with higher hydrocarbon character may lead to more H-abstraction terminated products. Overall findings show that the functional group of a PFAS may decrease or increase its thermal stability and lead to different profiles of pyrolysis products.

Abstract:The post-harvest disposal of soil remediation plants (SRPs) needs to be eco-friendly for remediation techniques to be sustainable. Incorporating Al/Si-based materials as additives may prove to be an effective method for stabilizing heavy metals during the pyrolysis of Zn/Cd-enriched SRPs. Based on the coupling of thermogravimetry − Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry − mass spectrometry − two-dimensional correlation spectrum analyses (TG-FTIR-MS-2D-COS) and Gaussian modeling, this study aimed to quantify and unveil dynamic, synergistic, and optimal emissions and kinetics of volatile components in response to the co-pyrolysis of Pfaffia glomerata (PG) with kaolin (K) or modified kaolin (KH). The kinetic mechanism of the thermal decomposition stage of volatile components was best accounted for by the diffusion model (100–315 °C) and reaction order model (315–600 °C).The Al-OH group in K enhanced the evolution and emission of CO 2 , H 2 O, and CH 4 . PG mixed with 10 % K (PK91) reduced the average activation energy value of PG from 217.90 to 196.44 kJ/mol. Compared with K, KH demonstrated superior thermal stability and controlled the cleavage of carbonyl, ether, carboxyl, and methyl groups, thus reducing gaseous pollution. Specifically, PG mixed with 20 % KH (PKH82) minimized the mass loss of PG biochar by 112.81 %, while PG mixed with 10 % KH (PKH91) reduced the E a value of PG to 155.91 kJ/mol. The sequential temperature dependency of volatiles in PG, identified through two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy, was altered by both K and KH. Given artificial neural network-based simulations, the simultaneously optimized reduction in total volatile emission and fuel mass was achieved with PKH91 but diminished with the rising temperature. These insights contribute to optimizing energy and controlling air pollution during the co-pyrolysis of SRPs with Al/Si-based materials.

Abstract:Natural soil minerals often contain numerous impurities, resulting in comparatively lower catalytic activity . Tropical soils are viewed as poor from soil organic matter , cations, and anions, which are considered the main impurities in the soil that are restricted to utilizing natural minerals as a catalyst. In this regard, the dissolved iron and hematite crystals that presented naturally in tropical soil were evaluated to activate oxidants and degrade pyrene. The optimum results obtained in this study were 73 %, and the rate constant was 0.0553 h −1 under experimental conditions [pyrene] = 300 mg/50 g, pH = 7, T = 55 °C, airflow = 260 mL/min, [Persulfate (PS)] = 1.0 g/L, and humic acid (HA) ( % w/w) = 0.5 %. The soil characterization analysis after the remediation process showed an increase in moieties and cracks of the soil aggregate, and a decline in the iron and aluminium contents. The scavengers test revealed that both SO4•− and O2•− were responsible for the pyrene degradation, while HO• had a minor role in the degradation process . In addition, the monitoring of by-products, degradation pathways, and toxicity assessment were also investigated. This system is considered an efficient, green method, and could provide a step forward to develop low-cost soil remediation for full-scale implementation.
