Cactus Representations in Polylogarithmic Max-flow via Maximal Isolating Mincuts

Abstract:A cactus representation of a graph, introduced by Dinitz et al. in 1976, is an edge sparsifier of $O(n)$ size that exactly captures all global minimum cuts of the graph. It is a central combinatorial object that has been a key ingredient in almost all algorithms for the connectivity augmentation problems and for maintaining minimum cuts under edge insertions (e.g. [NGM97], [CKL+22], [Hen97]). This sparsifier was generalized to Steiner cactus for a vertex set $T$, which can be seen as a vertex sparsifier of $O(|T|)$ size that captures all partitions of $T$ corresponding to a $T$-Steiner minimum cut, and also hypercactus, an analogous concept in hypergraphs. These generalizations further extend the applications of cactus to the Steiner and hypergraph settings. In a long line of work on fast constructions of cactus and its generalizations, a near-linear time construction of cactus was shown by [Karger and Panigrahi 2009]. Unfortunately, their technique based on tree packing inherently does not generalize. The state-of-the-art algorithms for Steiner cactus and hypercactus are still slower than linear time by a factor of $\Omega(|T|)$ [DV94] and $\Omega(n)$ [CX17], respectively. We show how to construct both Steiner cactus and hypercactus using polylogarithmic calls to max flow, which gives the first almost-linear time algorithms of both problems. The constructions immediately imply almost-linear-time connectivity augmentation algorithms in the Steiner and hypergraph settings, as well as speed up the incremental algorithm for maintaining minimum cuts in hypergraphs by a factor of $n$. The key technique behind our result is a novel variant of the influential isolating mincut technique [LP20, AKL+21] which we called maximal isolating mincuts. This technique makes the isolating mincuts to be "more balanced" which, we believe, will likely be useful in future applications.

Classifying Tractable Instances of the Generalized Cable-Trench Problem

Abstract:Given a graph $G$ rooted at a vertex $r$ and weight functions, $\gamma , \tau: E(G) \to \mathbb{R}$, the generalized cable-trench problem (CTP) is to find a single spanning tree that simultaneously minimizes the sum of the total edge cost with respect to $\tau$ and the single-source shortest paths cost with respect to $\gamma$. Although this problem is provably $NP$-complete in the general case, we examine certain tractable instances involving various graph constructions of trees and cycles, along with quantities associated to edges and vertices that arise out of these constructions. We show that given a path decomposition oracle, for graphs in which all cycles are edge disjoint, there exists a fast method to determine the cable-trench tree. Further, we examine properties of graphs which contribute to the general intractability of the CTP and present some open questions in this direction.

Abstract:We consider the s–t-path TSP: given a finite metric space with two elements s and t, we look for a path from s to t that contains all the elements and has minimum total distance. We improve the approximation ratio for this problem from 1.599 to 1.566. Like previous algorithms, we solve the natural LP relaxation and represent an optimum solution x∗$$x^*$$ as a convex combination of spanning trees. Gao showed that there exists a spanning tree in the support of x∗$$x^*$$ that has only one edge in each narrow cut [i.e., each cut C with x∗(C)<2$$x^*(C)<2$$]. Our main theorem says that the spanning trees in the convex combination can be chosen such that many of them are such “Gao trees” simultaneously at all sufficiently narrow cuts.

Abstract:Cactus varieties are a generalization of secant varieties. They are defined using linear spans of arbitrary finite schemes of bounded length, while secant varieties use only isolated reduced points. In particular, any secant variety is always contained in the respective cactus variety, and, except in a few initial cases, the inclusion is strict. It is known that lots of natural criteria that test membership in secant varieties are actually only tests for membership in cactus varieties. In this article, we propose the first techniques to distinguish actual secant variety from the cactus variety in the case of the Veronese variety. We focus on two initial cases, and , the simplest that exhibit the difference between cactus and secant varieties. We show that for , the component of the cactus variety other than the secant variety consists of degree d polynomials divisible by a rd power of a linear form. We generalize this description to an arbitrary number of variables. We present an algorithm for deciding whether a point in the cactus variety belongs to the secant variety for . We obtain similar results for the Grassmann cactus variety . Our intermediate results give also a partial answer to analogous problems for other cactus varieties and Grassmann cactus varieties to any Veronese variety.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the problem of efficiently constructing geodesic t-spanners. We consider finding sparse spanners on the surface of a 3 dimensional polyhedron allowing for steiner vertices. If Steiner vertices are not allowed, then we establish lower bounds on the maximum node degree, depending on the spanning ratio t and also the total number of vertices of the polyhedron surface. We also consider the case of the surface of a convex polytope P\mathcal P with V vertices. Using its vertex set P and Steiner points, we can construct a t-spanner with a constant degree and weight O(MST(U)), where MST(U) is the minimum spanning tree on the set U of vertices on convex polytope.
The Lawn Mowing Problem: From Algebra to Algorithms

Abstract:For a given polygonal region $P$, the Lawn Mowing Problem (LMP) asks for a shortest tour $T$ that gets within Euclidean distance 1/2 of every point in $P$; this is equivalent to computing a shortest tour for a unit-diameter cutter $C$ that covers all of $P$. As a generalization of the Traveling Salesman Problem, the LMP is NP-hard; unlike the discrete TSP, however, the LMP has defied efforts to achieve exact solutions, due to its combination of combinatorial complexity with continuous geometry. We provide a number of new contributions that provide insights into the involved difficulties, as well as positive results that enable both theoretical and practical progress. (1) We show that the LMP is algebraically hard: it is not solvable by radicals over the field of rationals, even for the simple case in which $P$ is a $2\times 2$ square. This implies that it is impossible to compute exact optimal solutions under models of computation that rely on elementary arithmetic operations and the extraction of $k$th roots, and explains the perceived practical difficulty. (2) We exploit this algebraic analysis for the natural class of polygons with axis-parallel edges and integer vertices (i.e., polyominoes), highlighting the relevance of turn-cost minimization for Lawn Mowing tours, and leading to a general construction method for feasible tours. (3) We show that this construction method achieves theoretical worst-case guarantees that improve previous approximation factors for polyominoes. (4) We demonstrate the practical usefulness \emph{beyond polyominoes} by performing an extensive practical study on a spectrum of more general benchmark polygons: We obtain solutions that are better than the previous best values by Fekete et al., for instance sizes up to $20$ times larger.

Abstract:In this paper algebraic and combinatorial properties and a computation of the number of the spanning trees are developed for certain graphs. To this purpose, an original method, independent of the spectrum of the Laplacian matrix associated to the graph, is discussed. It represents an alternative process to compute how many and which are the spanning trees of any graph and substantially consists in joining the spanning trees on the ground of the number of common edges between the inner cycles of it. The algorithm and its source code for determining the collection of all edge-sets of the spanning trees for the class of Jahangir graphs are displayed. An application involving such graphs in order to get a satisfactory degree of security in transmitting confidential information is given, and finally symmetry properties of them are highlighted.

Abstract:Summary The t ‐admissibility is a min‐max problem that concerns to determine whether a graph G contains a spanning tree T in which the distance between any two adjacent vertices of G is at most t in T . The stretch index of G , σ(G) , is the smallest t for which G is t ‐admissible. This problem is in P for t≤2 , NP‐complete for σ(G)≤t , t≥4 , and remaining open for t=3 . In a very recent development, Couto et al. (Inf Process Lett, 2022; 177: 106265) introduced both sequential and parallel algorithms for constructing spanning trees. Additionally, they proposed two greedy heuristics for generating a candidate solution tree, but they left unresolved the issue of how to decide between two vertices when both have equal chances of being chosen in a greedy step. This criterion is important, since different branches can yield different stretch indexes. In response to this question, we developed nine new heuristics that use the concept of vertex importance in complex networks. Our research evaluates results on several types of graphs, including Barabási‐Albert, Erdős‐Rényi, Watts‐Strogatz, and bipartite graphs. Furthermore, we introduce a new parallel algorithm that employs a method using induced cycle of the graph to compare its performance with previously proposed algorithms. We develop a deep analysis on the proposed strategies (parallel and heuristics) comparing all of them to the other ones in the literature and as a result we obtain the best results so far in order to obtain exact values (or heuristics) of stretch indexes.

Abstract:We propose polynomial-time algorithms that sparsify planar and bounded-genus graphs while preserving optimal or near-optimal solutions to Steiner problems. Our main contribution is a polynomial-time algorithm that, given an unweighted undirected graph G embedded on a surface of genus g and a designated face f bounded by a simple cycle of length k , uncovers a set F ⊆ E ( G ) of size polynomial in g and k that contains an optimal Steiner tree for any set of terminals that is a subset of the vertices of f . We apply this general theorem to prove that: — Given an unweighted graph G embedded on a surface of genus g and a terminal set S ⊆ V ( G ), one can in polynomial time find a set F ⊆ E ( G ) that contains an optimal Steiner tree T for S and that has size polynomial in g and | E ( T )|. — An analogous result holds for an optimal Steiner forest for a set S of terminal pairs. — Given an unweighted planar graph G and a terminal set S ⊆ V ( G ), one can in polynomial time find a set F ⊆ E ( G ) that contains an optimal (edge) multiway cut C separating S (i.e., a cutset that intersects any path with endpoints in different terminals from S ) and that has size polynomial in | C |. In the language of parameterized complexity, these results imply the first polynomial kernels for S teiner T ree and S teiner F orest on planar and bounded-genus graphs (parameterized by the size of the tree and forest, respectively) and for (E dge ) M ultiway C ut on planar graphs (parameterized by the size of the cutset). Additionally, we obtain a weighted variant of our main contribution: a polynomial-time algorithm that, given an undirected plane graph G with positive edge weights, a designated face f bounded by a simple cycle of weight w ( f ), and an accuracy parameter ε > 0, uncovers a set F ⊆ E ( G ) of total weight at most poly(ε -1 ) w ( f ) that, for any set of terminal pairs that lie on f , contains a Steiner forest within additive error ε w ( f ) from the optimal Steiner forest.

Three aspects of the MSTCI problem

Abstract:Consider a connected graph $G$ and let $T$ be a spanning tree of $G$. Every edge $e \in G-T$ induces a cycle in $T \cup \{e\}$. The intersection of two distinct such cycles is the set of edges of $T$ that belong to both cycles. The MSTCI problem consists in finding a spanning tree that has the least number of such non-empty intersections and the instersection number is the number of non-empty intersections of a solution. In this article we consider three aspects of the problem in a general context (i.e. for arbitrary connected graphs). The first presents two lower bounds of the intersection number. The second compares the intersection number of graphs that differ in one edge. The last is an attempt to generalize a recent result for graphs with a universal vertex.

Geometric spanners of bounded tree-width

Abstract:Given a point set $P$ in the Euclidean space, a geometric $t$-spanner $G$ is a graph on $P$ such that for every pair of points, the shortest path in $G$ between those points is at most a factor $t$ longer than the Euclidean distance between those points. The value $t\geq 1$ is called the dilation of $G$. Commonly, the aim is to construct a $t$-spanner with additional desirable properties. In graph theory, a powerful tool to admit efficient algorithms is bounded tree-width. We therefore investigate the problem of computing geometric spanners with bounded tree-width and small dilation $t$. Let $d$ be a fixed integer and $P \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ be a point set with $n$ points. We give a first algorithm to compute an $\mathcal{O}(n/k^{d/(d-1)})$-spanner on $P$ with tree-width at most $k$. The dilation obtained by the algorithm is asymptotically worst-case optimal for graphs with tree-width $k$: We show that there is a set of $n$ points such that every spanner of tree-width $k$ has dilation $\mathcal{O}(n/k^{d/(d-1)})$. We further prove a tight dependency between tree-width and the number of edges in sparse connected planar graphs, which admits, for point sets in $\mathbb{R}^2$, a plane spanner with tree-width at most $k$ and small maximum vertex degree. Finally, we show an almost tight bound on the minimum dilation of a spanning tree of $n$ equally spaced points on a circle, answering an open question asked in previous work.

Abstract:Given a weighted graph $G(V,E)$ and $t \ge 1$, a subgraph $H$ is a \emph{$t$--spanner} of $G$ if the lengths of shortest paths in $G$ are preserved in $H$ up to a multiplicative factor of $t$. The \emph{subsetwise spanner} problem aims to preserve distances in $G$ for only a subset of the vertices. We generalize the minimum-cost subsetwise spanner problem to one where vertices appear on multiple levels, which we call the \emph{multi-level graph spanner} (MLGS) problem, and describe two simple heuristics. Applications of this problem include road/network building and multi-level graph visualization, especially where vertices may require different grades of service. We formulate a 0--1 integer linear program (ILP) of size $O(|E||V|^2)$ for the more general minimum \emph{pairwise spanner problem}, which resolves an open question by Sigurd and Zachariasen on whether this problem admits a useful polynomial-size ILP. We extend this ILP formulation to the MLGS problem, and evaluate the heuristic and ILP performance on random graphs of up to 100 vertices and 500 edges.

Abstract:Spanning tree modulus is a generalization of effective resistance that is closely related to graph strength and fractional arboricity. The optimal edge density associated with spanning tree modulus is known to produce two hierarchical decompositions of arbitrary graphs, one based on strength and the other on arboricity. Here we introduce an exact-arithmetic algorithm for spanning tree modulus and the strength-based decomposition using Cunningham's algorithm for graph vulnerability. The algorithm exploits an interesting connection between spanning tree modulus and critical edge sets from the vulnerability problem. This paper introduces the new algorithm, describes a practical means for implementing it using integer arithmetic, and presents some examples and computational time scaling tests.

The Complexity of Geodesic Spanners using Steiner Points

Abstract:A geometric $t$-spanner $\mathcal{G}$ on a set $S$ of $n$ point sites in a metric space $P$ is a subgraph of the complete graph on $S$ such that for every pair of sites $p,q$ the distance in $\mathcal{G}$ is a most $t$ times the distance $d(p,q)$ in $P$. We call a connection between two sites a \emph{link}. In some settings, such as when $P$ is a simple polygon with $m$ vertices and a link is a shortest path in $P$, links can consist of $\Theta (m)$ segments and thus have non-constant complexity. The spanner complexity is a measure of how compact a spanner is, which is equal to the sum of the complexities of all links in the spanner. In this paper, we study what happens if we are allowed to introduce $k$ Steiner points to reduce the spanner complexity. We study such Steiner spanners in simple polygons, polygonal domains, and edge-weighted trees. We show that Steiner points have only limited utility. For a spanner that uses $k$ Steiner points, we provide an $\Omega(mn^{1/(t+1)}/k^{1/(t+1)})$ lower bound on the worst-case complexity of any $(t-\varepsilon)$-spanner, for any constant $\varepsilon \in (0,1)$ and integer constant $t \geq 2$. Additionally, we show NP-hardness for the problem of deciding whether a set of sites in a polygonal domain admits a $3$-spanner with a given maximum complexity using $k$ Steiner points. On the positive side, for trees we show how to build a $2t$-spanner that uses $k$ Steiner points of complexity $O(mn^{1/t}/k^{1/t} + n \log (n/k))$, for any integer $t \geq 1$. We generalize this to forests, and use it to obtain a $2\sqrt{2}t$-spanner in a simple polygon with complexity $O(mn^{1/t}(\log k)^{1+1/t}/k^{1/t} + n\log^2 n)$. When a link can be any path between two sites, we show how to improve the spanning ratio to $(2k+\varepsilon)$, for any constant $\varepsilon \in (0,2k)$, and how to build a $6t$-spanner in a polygonal domain with the same complexity.

Abstract:Generalized splines are an algebraic combinatorial framework that generalizes and unifies various established concepts across different fields, most notably the classical notion of splines and the topological notion of GKM theory. The former consists of piecewise polynomials on a combinatorial geometric object like a polytope, whose polynomial pieces agree to a specified degree of differentiability. The latter is a graph-theoretic construction of torus-equivariant cohomology that Shareshian and Wachs used to reformulate the well-known Stanley-Stembridge conjecture, a reformulation that was recently proven to hold by Brosnan and Chow and independently Guay-Paquet. This paper focuses on the theory of generalized splines. A generalized spline on a graph $G$ with each edge labeled by an ideal in a ring $R$ consists of a vertex-labeling by elements of $R$ so that the labels on adjacent vertices $u, v$ differ by an element of the ideal associated to the edge $uv$. We study the $R$-module of generalized splines and produce minimum generating sets for several families of graphs and edge-labelings: $1)$ for all graphs when the set of possible edge-labelings consists of at most two finitely-generated ideals, and $2)$ for cycles when the set of possible edge-labelings consists of principal ideals generated by elements of the form $(ax+by)^2$ in the polynomial ring $\mathbb{C}[x,y]$. We obtain the generators using a constructive algorithm that is suitable for computer implementation and give several applications, including contextualizing several results in the theory of classical (analytic) splines.

Abstract:The Travelling Salesman Problem is one the most fundamental and most studied problems in approximation algorithms. For more than 30 years, the best algorithm known for general metrics has been Christofides's algorithm with approximation factor of 3/2, even though the so-called Held-Karp LP relaxation of the problem is conjectured to have the integrality gap of only 4/3. Very recently, significant progress has been made for the important special case of graphic metrics, first by Oveis Gharan et al., and then by Momke and Svensson. In this paper, we provide an improved analysis for the approach introduced by Momke and Svensson yielding a bound of 13/9 on the approximation factor, as well as a bound of 19/12+epsilon for any epsilon>0 for a more general Travelling Salesman Path Problem in graphic metrics.

Abstract:Given an undirected graph with a nonnegative weight on each edge, the shortest total path length spanning tree problem is to find a spanning tree of the graph such that the total path length summed over all pairs of the vertices is minimized. In this paper, we present several approximation algorithms for this problem. Our algorithms achieve approximation ratios of 2, 15/8, and 3/2 in time O(n2+f(G)),O(n3), and O(n4) respectively, in which f(G) is the time complexity for computing all-pairs shortest paths of the input graph G and n is the number of vertices of G. Furthermore, we show that the approximation ratio of (4/3+ε) can be achieved in polynomial time for any constant ε>0.

Abstract:Computing a Euclidean minimum spanning tree of a set of points is a seminal problem in computational geometry and geometric graph theory. We combine it with another classical problem in graph drawing, namely computing a monotone geometric representation of a given graph. More formally, given a finite set $S$ of points in the plane and a finite set $\cal D$ of directions, a geometric spanning tree $T$ with vertex set $S$ is ${\cal D}$-monotone if, for every pair $\{u,v\}$ of vertices of $T$, there exists a direction $d \in \cal D$ for which the unique path from $u$ to $v$ in $T$ is monotone with respect to $d$. We provide a characterization of ${\cal D}$-monotone spanning trees. Based on it, we show that a ${\cal D}$-monotone spanning tree of minimum length can be computed in polynomial time if the number $k=|{\cal D}|$ of directions is fixed, both when (i) the set ${\cal D}$ of directions is prescribed and when (ii) the objective is to find a minimum-length ${\cal D}$-monotone spanning tree over all sets ${\cal D}$ of $k$ directions. For $k = 2$, we describe algorithms that are much faster than those for the general case. Furthermore, in contrast to the classical Euclidean minimum spanning tree, whose vertex degree is at most six, we show that for every even integer $k$, there exists a point set $S_k$ and a set $\cal D$ of $k$ directions such that any minimum-length $\cal D$-monotone spanning tree of $S_k$ has maximum vertex degree $2k$.
