Abstract:Background: Although preclinical studies support the contribution of the noradrenergic system activation in mediating the acute effects of amphetamines, these findings have not been followed up in clinical studies. Objectives: To examine the effects of atomoxetine, a norepinephrine transporter inhibitor, on subjective, physiological, and plasma cortisol responses to dextroamphetamine in 10 healthy volunteers. Methods: Subjects were randomly assigned to a sequence of atomoxetine (40 mg/day) or placebo treatments each lasting for 4 days. On Day 4 of each treatment period, responses to a single 20 mg/70 kg dose of dextroamphetamine were assessed. Results: Atomoxetine treatment attenuated dextroamphetamine-induced increases in systolic and diastolic blood pressure and plasma cortisol as well as the self-report ratings of “stimulated,” “high,” and “good drug effects.” Conclusions: These findings are consistent with previous preclinical studies supporting the role of the noradrenergic system in mediating acute amphetamine responses. Scientific significance: Atomoxetine's capacity to attenuate some of the physiological and subjective responses to dextroamphetamine supports its potential use for stimulant addiction.
The effect of virtual reality education using VSIM for nursing students

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to confirm the effectiveness of the problem solving process, critical thinking disposition, and self-directed learning ability effect between the group who received virtual reality simulation training online for 3rd grade nursing students and the group who received clinical practice training offline for them. The experimental group (18 people) was asked to evaluate patient care and provide feedback through VSim Scenarios (The National League for Nursing & Laerdal Medical), an online interactive virtual simulation. The control group (19 people) was given offline regular practical training. Data analysis was using SPSS25.0. As a result of the study, it was found that the experimental group who received virtual reality simulation practical education using online had a significantly higher problem solving process (Z=-2.194, p=.028) than the control group. Processes such as patient safety, communication, physical assessment, and drug injection appear to have had a positive effect on solving the problem by providing patient information through scenario learning, pre-learning quizzes, and providing feedback to patients after nursing in a virtual simulation space. In conclusion, in order to confirm the effectiveness of online virtual reality simulation education, it is necessary to continuously study by applying various variables.

Abstract:AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a virtual simulation education programme with debriefing in undergraduate nursing students. Perceived clinical competence and learning needs of students in a simulation environment were also measured.BACKGROUND: Evidence showed virtual simulation education programmes provided better knowledge acquisition. However, these studies to date did not incorporate virtual simulation in the combination of a debriefing model in nursing students.DESIGN: A one-group pre-test and post-test design.METHODS: 188 final year undergraduate nursing students participated in the study. Linear mixed model analysis was conducted to evaluate the effect of the programme.RESULTS: Students have perceived a significant improvement in clinical competence and nursing process. Self-efficacy has also boosted. Communication and critical thinking were applied better in the traditional clinical environment.CONCLUSION: Perceived clinical competence of Chinese nursing students has significant improvements by using virtual simulation combining a debriefing model during the COVID-19 period. Virtual simulation met students' learning needs. Future studies should include a control group for comparison and long-term measurement.RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: The study provided an innovative clinical learning pedagogy to serve as a potential alternative with traditional clinical practicum during the COVID-19 period as this is substantially limited.

Abstract:BackgroundNursing educators increasingly use virtual simulation, making it important to assess it efficacy and applicability.MethodsA one-group pretest–posttest study was conducted to investigate the impact of virtual simulation on nursing students' critical thinking and self-directed learning abilities. The participants were 47 Korean nursing students, completing a 4-week course that included the use of vSim for Nursing.ResultsNo statistically significant differences emerged between the assessments on critical thinking or self-directed learning ability before and after virtual simulation. However, one subscale on self-directed learning ability, "gathering resources for learning," showed statistical significance.ConclusionsVirtual simulation in its current format can be applied to Korean nursing students, but should be tailored to language appropriateness and the Korean clinical environment.

Abstract:Aims: To examine the effectiveness of a virtual reality simulation (VRS) triage in improving students' learning motivation, attitudes, satisfaction and learning experiences in an emergency nursing course. Background: VR facilitates the realization of clinical scenarios that are significant for teaching emergency nursing. Triage presents a unique challenge in emergency nursing courses, where practical learning opportunities are seldom available. Design: The study employed a convergent parallel mixed-methods design. Methods: A total of 164 third-year nursing students were recruited from an emergency nursing course. The experimental group of 73 students participated in a VRS triage program and the control group of 91 students received a traditional program based on written case studies. The learning outcomes were evaluated using the Attention, Relevance, Confidence and Satisfaction motivational learning inventory together with questionnaires on learning attitudes and satisfaction. Qualitative data were collected through phenomenographic interviews. Results: The learning outcomes from the experimental group showed significant improvement in motivational learning inventory scores, with the greatest increase in satisfaction, followed by confidence, attention and relevance. Qualitative interviews with 30 students revealed four main themes in their learning experiences: "reflecting a real-world clinical environment," "enabling the internalization of knowledge," "enhancing clinical skills proficiency," and "cultivating a positive attitude toward patient care." The core theme was the establishment of professional core competency. Conclusions: VRS learning shows positive outcomes in enriching students' learning experiences. This study contributes to the literature on the use of VR technology in nursing education by offering insights into the effectiveness of VRS learning.

Abstract:Background: Simulation-based learning is widely used in nursing students’ clinical practice, including 3D video virtual reality which has grown remarkably in the last few years. Integrating 3D video virtual reality and mobile phone technology into clinical training of nursing students allows for enhancing learning experiences. Aim :The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of video based virtual reality simulation on nursing students’ self-efficacy, satisfaction and performance regarding selected procedures. Subjects and Method: A purposive sample of 200 nursing students from academic first year, who were enrolled in fundamental nursing course in the second semester, Faculty of Nursing, Tanta University. Tools: four tools were included. Tool (I): Student knowledge questionnaire which composed of two parts: Part (A): Socio- demographic characteristics of students. Part (B): Students knowledge assessment sheet. Tool (II): Observational checklist of selected procedures Tool (III): Students Self-Efficacy. Tool (IV): Nursing student’s satisfaction scale. Results: The main findings showed that nursing students' performance, knowledge, self-efficacy, and satisfaction had all significantly improved in the study group since p value was ≤ 0.05 post implementing the program. Conclusion& Recommendations: The implementation of video based virtual reality simulation had a positive effect on nursing students’ knowledge, performance, self-efficacy and satisfaction regarding selected procedures. It was recommended that financial investment on the part of nursing faculty in the creation of suitable laboratories and training instructors who will apply training program

Abstract:Core nursing skills are emphasized in nursing education, given their vital role in nurses' competence; however, invasive nursing procedures like catheterization and enemas are infrequently performed in actual clinical practice, primarily being observed rather than executed. Virtual reality simulation training involves performing core nursing skills on virtual patients in a three-dimensional virtual reality environment, following the correct procedures. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of VR simulation on nursing students' confidence, proficiency, task engagement, and satisfaction. The study participants included 76 second-year nursing students, with 37 in the VR group and 39 in the control group. The VR group engaged in immersive VR (IVR) training sessions including enemas, nasogastric feeding, and nelaton catheterization. Conversely, the control group practiced these skills using mannequins. Assessments evaluated confidence, proficiency, learning satisfaction, and task engagement before and after the intervention. The average age of the study participants was 21.07 years, with 78.95% being female and 21.05% being male. The study findings revealed no significant differences between the VR and control groups regarding confidence (F = 3.878, p = 0.053), task engagement (F = 0.164, p = 0.687), and learning satisfaction (F = 0.668, p = 0.416). However, the VR group demonstrated significantly higher proficiency in the overall assessment of nasogastric feeding (F = 5.389, p = 0.023) and core components of nelaton catheterization (F = 4.046, p = 0.048). The IVR program emerged as an effective and valuable teaching tool, particularly well-suited for second-year nursing students, significantly enhancing proficiency.

Abstract:Abstract Background The beneficial effect of simulation experience on nursing students is well established in the literature. However, an accurate simulation modality to help professional nurses enhance their clinical competence and expertise remains unexplored. The current study evaluated and contrasted the impact of two simulation modalities on nurses’ knowledge, abilities, self-efficacy, confidence, and satisfaction following a simulated clinical experience caring for chemotherapy patients. Methods A quasi-experimental research design was employed in this study. The participants were divided into group A, comprising nurses exposed to the high-fidelity simulation, and group B, comprising nurses exposed to the virtual simulation. Results The study found that nurses exposed to high-fidelity simulation and virtual simulation gained a high standard of knowledge and skills. The nurses’ post-test and post-objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) scores drastically increased after simulation exposure compared to their pre-test and pre-OSCE scores. For the group exposed to high-fidelity simulation, the mean differences were − 19.65 (pre- and post-test) and 23.85 (pre- and post-OSCE), while for the group exposed to virtual simulation, the mean differences were − 22.42 (pre- and post-test) and 20.63 (pre- and post-OSCE). All p -values indicated significant differences < 0.001. Moreover, both groups exhibited high self-efficacy, confidence, and satisfaction levels after the simulation experience. The outcomes of both simulation modalities regarding self-efficacy, confidence, and satisfaction levels indicate no significant difference, as supported by p -values of > 0.05. Conclusion High-fidelity simulation and virtual simulation training effectively and efficiently advance nurses’ professional competence. The nurses exposed to high-fidelity simulation and virtual simulation gained high levels of knowledge and skills. Additionally, it increased their sense of happiness, self-worth, and self-efficacy. The simulation approach will be a potent instrument for improving nurses’ competency and fully developing their sense of expertise. Therefore, developing policies adopting simulation as part of their professional development will ensure patient safety and improve health outcomes.

Abstract:The use of simulation in the undergraduate nursing curriculum is gaining popularity and is becoming a foundation of many nursing programs. The purpose of this paper is to highlight a new simulation teaching strategy, virtual reality (VR) simulation, which capitalizes on the technological skills of the new generation student. This small-scale pilot study focused on improving interpersonal skills in senior level nursing students using VR simulation. In this study, a repeated-measure design was used to evaluate the effectiveness of VR simulation on improving student’s performance over a series of two VR scenarios. Using the Emergency Medicine Crisis Resource Management (EMCRM) tool, student performance was evaluated. Overall, the total EMCRM score improved but not significantly. The subscale areas of communication ( P = .047 , 95% CI: − 1.06 , − .007 ) and professional behavior ( P = .003 , 95% CI: − 1.12 , − .303 ) did show a significant improvement between the two scenario exposures. Findings from this study show the potential for virtual reality simulations to have an impact on nursing student performance.

Abstract:Abstract Background Effective provider-patient communication is crucial to the delivery of high-quality care. Communication roadblock such as righting reflex is widely observed among providers and can lead to relational disengagement. In previous work, nurses felt ill-equipped to communicate effectively with HIV-positive patients to support medication adherence. Providing nurses with continuing education opportunities to improve their relational skills is a major target for optimizing the quality of care. Virtual patient simulation is one promising strategy that needs to be evaluated among graduate nurses. This study aimed to assess the acceptability of a virtual patient simulation to improve nurses’ relational skills in a continuing education context. Methods We conducted a convergent mixed methods study by combining a quantitative pre-experimental, one-group post-test design and a qualitative exploratory study. We used convenience and snowball sampling approaches to select registered nurses ( n = 49) working in Quebec, Canada. Participants completed an online sociodemographic questionnaire, consulted the automated virtual patient simulation (informed by motivational interviewing), and filled out an online post-test survey. Descriptive statistics (mean, SD, median, interquartile range) were used to present quantitative findings. From the 27 participants who completed the simulation and post-test survey, five participated in a focus group to explore their learning experience. The discussion transcript was subjected to thematic analysis. At the final stage of the study, we used a comparison strategy for the purpose of integrating the quantitative and qualitative results. Results Nurses perceived the simulation to be highly acceptable. They rated the global system quality and the technology acceptance with high scores. They reported having enjoyed the simulation and recommended other providers use it. Four qualitative themes were identified: motivations to engage in the simulation-based research; learning in a realistic, immersive, and non-judgmental environment; perceived utility of the simulation; and perceived difficulty in engaging in the simulation-based research. Conclusions The simulation contributed to knowledge and skills development on motivational interviewing and enhanced nurses’ self-confidence in applying relational skills. Simulation holds the potential to change practice, as nurses become more self-reflective and aware of the impact of their relational skills on patient care. In-situ simulation for nursing students' professional competence development in postanesthesia care: A quasi-experimental study

Abstract:Aim: To evaluate the differences in professional competence development between nursing students in routine clinical practice and those who experienced four additional in-situ simulations. Background: The amount of clinical practice time available to nursing students is limited. Occasionally, clinical settings do not provide all of the content that nursing students are expected to acquire. In high-risk clinical scenarios, such as the postanesthesia care unit, clinical practice may not provide sufficient context for students to develop the professional competence. Design: This was a non-blinded, non-randomized, quasi-experimental study. The study was conducted in the postanesthesia care unit of a tertiary hospital in China between April 2021 and December 2022. Nursing students' self-assessed professional competence development and faculty-assessed clinical judgment were used as indicators. Methods: A total of 30 final year undergraduate nursing students were divided into two groups according to the time they arrived at the unit for their clinical practice. Nursing students in the control group followed the routine teaching protocol of the unit. Students in the simulation group received four additional in-situ simulations during the second and third weeks of their practice in addition to the routine program. Nursing students self-assessed their postanesthesia care unit professional competence at the end of the first and fourth weeks. At the end of the fourth week, the nursing students were evaluated on their clinical judgment. Results: Nursing students in both groups scored higher on the professional competence at the end of the fourth week than at the end of the first week and there was a trend of higher competence improvement in the simulation group than in the control group. For clinical judgment, nursing students in the simulation group scored higher than the control group. Conclusions: In-situ simulation contributes to the development of professional competence and clinical judgment of nursing students during their clinical practice in the postanesthesia care unit.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: According to The Joint Commission (2012), the leading cause of sentinel events in the United States was miscommunication. Lack of thorough and accurate communication remains a serious challenge in healthcare and an educational priority in schools of nursing. Virtual clinical simulation is an online educational approach where students use avatars to practice various skills.OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the educational innovation of using virtual clinical simulation to improve communication skills of BSN students. The objectives of the simulations were to 1) recognize significant patient data and 2) accurately perform the ISBAR communication technique.DESIGN: The study used a within-group, time-series design with eight students. Students participated in two synchronous virtual simulations in an online virtual clinical environment called CliniSpace. Students performed in groups of four to five students.METHODS: Students performed in two virtual simulations in groups of four to five students. Student performances were scored by two raters using the CliniSpace ISBAR Rating Sheet. Field notes from debriefing sessions were analyzed for content.RESULTS: Mean group student performance scores more than doubled from performance one to performance two. This change was found to be statistically significant, p<.001. Field notes revealed that students listened to how their peers communicated and learned from them. Students expressed having less anxiety, knowing what to expect, and having "better flow" with communication. Students verbalized learning to assess the patient prior to calling the physician and to give a recommendation to the physician.

On the role of bacterial inoculum growth conditions on nitrate denitrification pathway.

Abstract:Activities of nitrite and nitrate reductases as well as the efficiencies of denitrification carried out by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pseudomonas stutzeri under different culture conditions have been compared. The inoculum growth conditions had no influence on denitrification pathway in either strain. Activities of both reductases were higher in Pseudomonas stutzeri than in Pseudomonas aeruginosa cultures.

Abstract:The maintenance of nursing professional competency is essential to ensure patients' health outcomes. With the current shortage of nursing workforce, a novel approach is necessary to refresh clinical skills and update practice. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of using head-mounted display virtual reality to refresh knowledge and skills and explore nurses' perceptions towards using this technology for refresher training. A pre-test post-test mixed-method experimental design was employed. Participants ( n = 88) were registered nurses with a diploma in nursing. The intravenous therapy and subcutaneous injection procedures were implemented using head-mounted display virtual reality. The study showed significant improvement in knowledge for the procedures, cognitive absorption, online readiness, self-directed learning, and motivation for learning. In the qualitative focus group discussions, three themes were identified using thematic analyses: enjoyable way to refresh clinical knowledge; learning outside classroom and limitations in maneuver. Using head-mounted display virtual reality is promising in refreshing clinical skills for nurses. Training and refresher courses can explore using this novel technology, which may be a viable alternative to ensure professional competence with reduced manpower and resources used by the healthcare institution.

Abstract:Background: Simulation is an alternative or complementary method for students who cannot obtain sufficient direct care experience, as they allow students to experience various clinical situations. Mixed learning is becoming increasingly common as a way to provide students with opportunities to experience real-life clinical scenarios. This study compared the learning effects of a virtual simulation and a high-fidelity simulation in a different order of presentation, with a focus on training for premature rupture of membranes in the field maternity nursing. Through this comparison, this study aimed to obtain evidence to support decision-making regarding the most effective way to utilize mixed simulation strategies. Methods: A quasi-experimental, crossover-design study was performed with two randomly allocated groups of 26 junior nursing students each. The virtual simulation used the vSim® for nursing, and the high-fidelity simulation used a scenario developed by the research team. The learning effects were measured in terms of the problem-solving process, clinical reasoning, reflective thinking, satisfaction with the practicum, and self-confidence. The data collected with a structured questionnaire were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test. Results: The virtual simulation-first, high-fidelity simulation-second order led to significantly higher scores for reflective thinking (z = 3.53, p < .001) and self-confidence (z = 2.47, p = .013) than the other order. Conclusions: The initial application of virtual simulation seemed to improve students' thought processes, and then high-fidelity simulation seemed to allow them to perform actual practice better. Further trials of mixed learning methods are necessary to maximize learning effects in nursing education. Trial registration: KCT0005767 at 2021-01-12 registered.

Abstract:Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic led to a significant reduction in operative exposure for surgical trainees, necessitating alternative training methods to mitigate the impact on surgical education. This study sought to evaluate whether minimally invasive surgery (MIS) skills could be taught remotely using widely available technology with objective assessments of proficiency. Methods: This was a pilot observational study with comparative assessment of face-to-face (F2F) and virtual training of novice learners in MIS skills. Performance and objective cognitive workload parameters (Surgical Task Load Index (SURG-TLX) score, heart rate and pupil metrics) were evaluated. The assessments were peg transfer (McGill Inanimate System for Training and Evaluation of Laparoscopic Skills (MISTELS)) and suturing (Suturing Training and Testing (SUTT)) tasks performed using box trainers. Virtual teaching was conducted by expert trainers using a web-based streaming platform. Results: Technical challenges of delivering a virtual MIS skills course were addressed after a pilot course. Participants (n = 20) in the final course had similar baseline characteristics and were randomly allocated to F2F (n = 8) and virtual (n = 12) teaching groups. Participants in the online group completed the peg transfer task faster than the F2F group (11.25 minutes vs. 16.88 minutes; P = 0.015). There were no significant differences in all other MISTELS and SUTT performance measures between groups. Cognitive workload parameters (SURG-TLX score, heart rate and pupil metrics) were also similar between groups. Conclusion: This study has demonstrated that virtual teaching of MIS skills using a web-based streaming platform is feasible and effective, providing the foundation for low-cost, effective, and scalable MIS skills programs in the future.
Development and Effects of Adult Nursing Education Programs Using Virtual Reality Simulations

Abstract:A virtual-reality-simulation-based nursing education program incorporating an information processing model helps nursing students develop their learned knowledge as nursing behavior and develop their ability to cope with complex clinical challenges. The purpose of this study is to develop a nursing education program using an immersive virtual reality simulation app for clinical situations based on an information processing model and identify the effects. A non-quantitative control group pretest-post-test design was employed. The programs were developed using the ADDIE model and an information processing model. In order to verify the effectiveness of the program, six adult nursing learning issues were taught to the experimental group over 6 weeks. The nursing education program in this study provides comprehensive experiential learning through advanced virtual simulation, significantly enhancing nursing students' performance confidence, critical-thinking abilities, and problem-solving skills across a wide range of clinical scenarios. By repeatedly engaging with diverse learning topics related to adult nursing, this program not only equips students with essential practical skills but also contributes to the overall improvement of patient safety and the quality of medical care.
