Abstract:A kind of novel hydrogels, poly(methacrylic acid-co-acrylamide) [poly(MAA-co-AM)], were prepared by radical aqueous copolymerization of acrylamide and methacrylic acid in the presence of crosslinker N-N′-methylenebisacrylamide (BIS). The swelling dynamics of the prepared dry hydrogels were investaged. The results show that the swelling behaviors of the prepared hydrogels are different with the different contents of methacrylic acid (MAA) in the hydrogels, and the swelling ratio of the hydrogels prepared increases with the increase of pH value of the solution. When the prepared hydrogels were shifted between solutions with pH=2 and pH=12, the hydrogels exhibit rapid reversible swelling-deswelling property, and their responsive rates are affected significantly by stirring. The hydrogels with absorbed water in equilibrium can be deswelled in both acid and alkaline solutions, they shrink more than 90% in solution of pH=2 within 10 min, and the shrinking rates decrease with the increase of pH value of the solution. The swelling properties of prepared hydrogels in NaCl and CaCl 2 solutions were investigated; the results show that the influences of the ionic strength and the charge of counter ion in the solution are obvious, and that the hydrogels display the reversible swelling-deswelling property in water and NaCl solution.

Abstract:How to balance the mechanical strengths and water content of synthetic hydrogels, and design and prepare new hydrogel systems simultaneously with mechanical strengths over MPa level and equilibrium water content (EWC) above 70 % remain difficult and challenging tasks. In this work, multi-physically cross-linked poly (acrylamide-co-acrylic acid)/sodium alginate-tamarind gum/ferric ion/tetraborate (P(AM-co-AAx)/SAy-TGy/ Fe3+/B) hydrogels simultaneously with MPa level mechanical strengths and high EWC above 70 % were suc-cessfully synthesized by combining the advantages of SA and TG. TG played a role of increasing hydration of the hydrogels, rendering the high equilibrium water content, while SA was mainly responsible for providing me-chanical strengths to the hydrogels via ionic coordination bonds with ferric ions. The optimal P(AM-co-AA0.175)/ SA3-TG3/Fe3+/B hydrogels exhibited high elastic modulus of-5.39 MPa, fracture strength of-3.24 MPa, elongation strain at break of 121 %, toughness of-2.58 MJ/m3, and EWC of-71.6 %. The P(AM-co-AAx)/SAy- TGy/Fe3+/B hydrogels also exhibited effective energy dissipation mechanisms, excellent self-recovery properties and environmental stabilities in wide temperature range of 0-75 degrees C and pH range of 3-11. By soaking in 0.9 % NaCl solution, the obtained P(AM-co-AA0.175)/SA3-TG3/Fe3+/B/NaCl hydrogels exhibited excellent electrical conductivity and strain sensitivity, which could be used as strain sensors.
Degradable and Thermosensitive Microgels with Tannic Acid As the Sole Cross-Linker

Abstract:Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)-tannic acid (TA) microgels were successfully prepared via surfactant-free emulsion polymerization (SFEP) at 70 °C in aqueous solution using N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) as the monomer and a natural polyphenol macromolecule, TA, as the sole cross-linker. The cross-linking network of the PNIPAM-TA microgels was confirmed to contain both physical cross-linking structures formed via hydrogen-bonding interactions between TA and PNIPAM chains and chemical cross-linking structures formed via capturing the radicals of propagating polymer chains by catechol and pyrogallol groups of TA. Furthermore, TA was applied to modify the surface of hydrophobic Fe3O4 nanoparticles, leading to hydrophilic Fe3O4@TA composite nanoparticles, which were successfully used as the cross-linker to fabricate PNIPAM-Fe3O4@TA organic-inorganic hybrid microgels. The obtained PNIPAM-TA and PNIPAM-Fe3O4@TA organic-inorganic hybrid microgels had a uniform spherical shape with a relatively narrow size distribution and exhibited thermosensitive behavior and pH-tunable degradation. The PNIPAM-TA microgels were stable in the pH range of 1.3-11.1 but underwent complete degradation with pH above 11.4. The PNIPAM-Fe3O4@TA hybrid microgels were partially degraded at pH values of 1.3 and 2.1, stable in the pH range of 3.1-11.1, and underwent complete degradation at pH above 11.4. The partial degradation of PNIPAM-Fe3O4@TA organic-inorganic hybrid microgels under strong acidic conditions was attributed to the disintegration of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The complete degradation of both microgels at pH above 11.4 was attributed to the hydrolysis of ester groups of TA under strong alkali conditions.

Abstract:Double network hydrogel with excellent mechanical properties is a polymer material composed of interpenetrating polymer network structure. In this study, poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid)/sodium alginate (P(AAM-co-AAC)/SA) hydrogels were rapidly prepared by photopolymerization under green LED irradiation. Subsequently, poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid)/sodium alginate/tannic acid (P(AAM-co-AAC)/SA/TA) hydrogels were prepared by immersion method. The morphology, mechanical properties, the wet adhension ability and swelling behaviour morphology of P(AAM-co-AAC)/SA/TA hydrogels were studied in detail. The double network hydrogel has excellent mechanical properties, with the elongation at break and tensile strength reaching 862% and 0.77 MPa respectively. The hydrogel with tannic acid showed excellent adhesion, wet adhesion and anti-swelling capability. Our research provides a more efficient and environmentally friendly preparation method for hydrogels used in wet environment.

Abstract:Adhesiveness of hydrogels depends on the balance and synergy of their cohesion and adhesion. However, it is a challenge to fabricate catechol-based hydrogels with high adhesiveness because the required condition for cohesion and adhesion of these hydrogels is in conflict with each other: strong cohesion (gelation) requires a weak basic condition, whereas strong adhesion requires an acidic condition. Here, we demonstrated that by utilizing polyphenol supramolecular chemistry, the coexistence of strong cohesion and adhesion can be achieved in a hydrogel via the one-pot method. Poly(dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride)/tannic acid (PDDA/TA) hydrogel has been studied as a proof of concept. Compared with catechol moieties that covalently grafted on polymer chains, TA can bring high density of pyrogallol/catechol functional groups for polymers via a noncovalent pathway, as well as high acidity in the system. As a result, the cohesion of the hydrogel is enhanced significantly, the highest storage moduli can reach up to ca. 0.15 MPa; besides, the high acidity of the hydrogel prevents pyrogallol/catechol groups from oxidation and guarantees strong adhesion; thus, the hydrogel can adhere to diverse substrates steadily, including tissues, glass, metals, and plastic. Moreover, because of the adjustable adhesiveness via changing the pH, the PDDA/TA hydrogel becomes a unique system with patternable adhesiveness. In addition, the hydrogel has rapid self-healing and high ionic conductivity (∼4.3 S m-1). This study demonstrates that utilizing polyphenol chemistry in the construction of hydrogels opens a new path toward multifunctional hydrogels with improved properties.

Abstract:In this study, using acrylamide (AAm) as monomer, potassium persulfate (K2S2O8) as initiator, N, N, N’, N’-tetramethylethylenediamine as accelerator, and N, N’-methylenebisacrylamide as crosslinking agents, titanium dioxide (TiO2) as inorganic enforcement fillers, the PAAm/TiO2 organic-inorganic composite hydrogels with enhanced mechanical properties were prepared by free radical polymerization. The obtained hydrogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), mechanical and swelling property tests. The experimental results show that PAAm/TiO2 organic-inorganic composite hydrogels were successfully synthesized, the mechanical property of the hydrogel was improved but the swelling ratio of the hydrogel was decreased due to the addition of TiO2.

Abstract:Extracellular matrix (ECM) as a network is mainly composed of glycosaminoglycans and proteins. Among these glycosaminoglycans and proteins that naturally occur in ECM, hyaluronic acid (HA) and gelatin attract more attentions. In this work, a chemically cross-linked HA/gelatin hydrogel (HG hydrogel) was firstly fabricated, and then, tannic acid (TA) was introduced as a physical cross-linker, to form a dual-cross-linked network (HG-TAx hydrogels). The strong hydrogen bonding between TA and HG hydrogel resulted in lower swelling ratio, decreasing from 220% (pristine HG hydrogels) to 7.5% (HG-TA25 hydrogels) and stronger mechanical properties increasing from 6 kPa (HG hydrogel) to 160 kPa (HG-TA25 hydrogel). The hydrogel stability in enzyme was significantly improved, attributing to the hyaluronidase inhibition activity of TA. The degradation time significantly increased along with the addition of TA (from 7 up to 21 days). Furthermore, the HG-TAx hydrogels exhibited good cleavage ability to reactive oxygen species (ROS) that could be generated in human tissues, and the antioxidant capacity increased up to 24.2 mg/mL of L-ascorbic acid standard. The improved mechanical properties, prolonged degradation time, and potential antioxidant ability of the HG-TAx hydrogels could pave the way for the design of biomaterials. Furthermore, TA has shown potential biological functions properties and brought the great potential of the HG-TAx hydrogels for implant applications.

Abstract:Based on the strategy of dynamic metal-coordination for improving mechanical properties, a further ideal was taken to prepare the tough hydrogels with the combination of self-crosslinking monomer and metal-coordination complexes. Herein, a series of hydrogels of poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid-co-N-hydroxymethyl acrylamide) (P(AM-co-AAc-co-NMAM)) consisting the chemical crosslinking induced by NMAM units and the physical crosslinking derived from the coordination complexes of carboxyl-Fe3+ were prepared. The molecular structure was investigated with the ATR-FTIR, Raman and UV-vis spectra. These hydrogels with different water content of 57-93% possess good mechanical performances. The optimal hydrogels possess high tensile strength (8.56 MPa), prominent modulus (15.5 MPa), remarkable toughness (37.85 MJ/m(3)) and superb tearing energy (7062 J/m(2)). The tough hydrogels also display excellent self-recovery (95% toughness recovery within 50 min), pH-triggered healing, shape memory and plasticity abilities. These hydrogels having high strength and toughness may broaden range of potential applications in load-bearing soft actuators, flexible electronics, etc.

Abstract:Macroporous acrylonitrile-acrylic acid (AN-AA) copolymer hydrogels were synthesized by free-radical solution polymerizations, using ammonium persulfate (APS)/N,N,N',N'-tetramethylenediamine (TEMED) redox initiator system and alcohols porogens. The morphology, temperature and pH sensitive swelling behavior, and swelling kinetics of the resulting hydrogels were investigated. It Was found that alcohol type and concentration had great influences Oil the pore Structure and porosity of hydrogels. The pore size of hydrogel increases with the moderate increase of the length of alcohol alkyl chain. However, a further increase of alkyl length would result in the Formation of cauliflower-like structure and the decrease of pore size. The porosity of hydrogels increases with the increase of porogen concentration in the polymerization medium. The hydrogels with macroporous structure swell or shrink much faster in response to the change of pH in comparison with the conventional hydrogel without macroporous structure. Furthermore, the response rate is closely related to the porosity of the hydrogels, which could be easily controlled by modulating the concentration of the porogen in the medium. The circular swelling behavior of hydrogels indicated the formation of a relaxing three-dimensional network.
Effect of Tannic Acid Concentrations on Temperature-Sensitive Sol–Gel Transition and Stability of Tannic Acid/Pluronic F127 Composite Hydrogels

Abstract:Recently, interest in polyphenol-containing composite adhesives for various biomedical applications has been growing. Tannic acid (TA) is a polyphenolic compound with advantageous properties, including antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Additionally, TA contains multiple hydroxyl groups that exhibit biological activity by forming hydrogen bonds with proteins and biomacromolecules. Furthermore, TA-containing polymer composites exhibit excellent tissue adhesion properties. In this study, the gelation behavior and adhesion forces of TA/Pluronic F127 (TA/PluF) composite hydrogels were investigated by varying the TA and PluF concentrations. PluF (above 16 wt%) alone showed temperature-responsive gelation behavior because of the closely packed micelle aggregates. After the addition of a small amount of TA, the TA/PluF hydrogels showed thermosensitive behavior similar to that of PluF hydrogels. However, the TA/PluF hydrogels containing more than 10 wt% TA completely suppressed the thermo-responsive gelation kinetics of PluF, which may have been due to the hydrogen bonds between TA and PluF. In addition, TA/PluF hydrogels with 40 wt% TA showed excellent tissue adhesion properties and bursting pressure in porcine intestinal tissues. These results are expected to aid in understanding the use of mixtures of TA and thermosensitive block copolymers to fabricate adhesive hydrogels for versatile biomedical applications.

Abstract:The improvement of the capability of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) hydrogel coating in cell adhesion and detachment is critical to efficiently prepare cell sheets applied in cellular therapies and tissue engineering. To enhance cell response on the surface, the amine group-modified PNIPAAm (PNIPAAm-APTES) nanohydrogels were synthesized and deposited spontaneously on tannic acid (TA)-modified polyethylene (PE) plates. Subsequently, TA was introduced onto PNIPAAm-APTES nanohydrogels to fabricate coatings composed of TA-modified PNIPAAm-APTES (PNIPAAm-APTES-TA). Characterization techniques, including TEM, SEM, XPS, and UV-Vis spectroscopy, confirmed the effective deposition of hydrogels of PNIPAAm as well as the morphologies, content of chemical bonding-TA, and stability of various coatings. Importantly, the porous hydrogel coatings exhibited superhydrophilicity at 20 °C and thermo-responsive behavior. The fluorescence measurement demonstrated that the coating's stability effectively regulated protein behavior, influencing cell response. Notably, cell response tests revealed that even without precise control over the chain length/thickness of PNIPAAm during synthesis, the coatings enhanced cell adhesion and detachment, facilitating efficient cell culture. This work represented a novel and facile approach to preparing bioactive PNIPAAm for cell culture.

Abstract:Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) hydrogels containing N-[3-(N,N-dimethylamino)propyl]methacrylamide (DMAPMAAm), 2-(N,N-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and [3-(methacryloylamino)propyl]trimethylammonium chloride (MAPTAC) as cationic monomers were cross-linked with N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (BIS) and tetraallylammonium bromide (TAB). The swelling degrees, uniaxial compression moduli and L-ascorbic acid (L-AA) releases of these cationic PNIPAAm hydrogels synthesized in 1,4-dioxane were compared with the one prepared in distilled–deionized water (DDW) and in aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (0.1 N NaOH). P(NIPAAm-co-MAPTAC)/BIS and P(NIPAAm-co-DMAEMA)/BIS hydrogels at 37 °C in DDW and at 37 °C/pH 4 exhibited higher gel strengths and compressive moduli than all the others cross-linked and copolymerized with TAB and DMAPMAAm, respectively. All the observations indicated that the physical cross-linking points created by ionomer pairs of MAPTA+Cl− units and the hydrophobic contributions of ester groups in the DMAEMA units might be a reason of their improved mechanical properties in DDW at 37 °C. Further, the charge screening effect of chloride ions in the swelling medium at pH 4 also resulted in the improved compressive moduli compared to the ones in DDW. The water diffusion into/from all the copolymeric PNIPAAm hydrogels during the swelling/deswelling processes at 25 °C/37 °C in DDW and their L-AA releases at 37 °C in DDW also revealed the importance of these ionic and hydrophobic effects. Water transport through the ones cross-linked with TAB was controlled by non-Fickian process due to the repulsive forces between the quaternized ammonium groups on the chemical cross-links while in the case of P(NIPAAm-co-MAPTAC)/BIS, water transport followed Fickian diffusion because the multiplet formations behaved as additional cross-links. Furthermore, P(NIPAAm-co-MAPTAC)/BIS hydrogel due to the ionomer-multiplet transitions at 37 °C in DDW has exhibited less-Fick diffusion that resulted in a lower diffusion coefficient during the release of L-AA as compared to the others.

Abstract:The tough polyacrylamide/Laponite/titania (TiO2) dual nanocomposite (NC) hydrogel was fabricated by in situ radical polymerization of acrylamide (AAm) in the dispersion of Laponite and TiO2. TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by sol-gel method and used as both the inorganic filler and multi-functional crosslinking agent. The morphology of hydrogel was tuned as functions of the sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentration and the ratio of Ti (mmol) to clay (g) (mmol Ti/g clay). SEM and HR-TEM morphologies revealed that Laponite and TiO2 tended to form a uniform and regular microstructure like peasecod in poly(acrylamide) (PAAm) matrix due to the synergistic effect between electrostatic interaction and covalent interaction when the concentration of NaOH used in TiO2 hydrosol increased to 1 x 10(-1) mol/L. This homogeneous microstructure enhanced mechanical properties of hydrogel. The compression strength, modulus and fracture energy reached 2,107 kPa, 247 kPa, and 1,837 J/m(2), respectively. The gels exhibited excellent fatigue resistance and good UV protective performance. Abstract:This study investigates hydrogels based on 2-Acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid sodium salt (AMPS) copolymers, incorporating N-hydroxyethyl acrylamide (HEA) and 3-sulfopropyl acrylate potassium salt (SPA). The addition of HEA and SPA is designed to fine-tune the hydrogels' water absorption and mechanical properties, ultimately enhancing their characteristics and expanding their potential for biomedical applications. A copolymer of AMPS, 2-carboxyethyl acrylate (CEA) combined with methacrylic acid (MAA) as poly(AMPS-stat-CEA-stat-MAA, PACM), was preliminarily synthesized. CEA and MAA were modified with allyl glycidyl ether (AGE) through ring-opening, yielding macromers with pendant allyl groups (PACM-AGE). Copolymers poly(AMPS-stat-HEA-stat-CEA-stat-MAA) (PAHCM) and poly(AMPS-stat-SPA-stat-CEA-stat-MAA) (PASCM) were also synthesized and modified with AGE to produce PAHCM-AGE and PASCM-AGE macromers. These copolymers and macromers were characterized by 1H NMR, FT-IR, and GPC, confirming successful synthesis and functionalization. The macromers were then photocrosslinked into hydrogels and evaluated for swelling, water content, and mechanical properties. The results revealed that the PASCM-AGE hydrogels exhibited superior swelling ratios and water retention, achieving equilibrium water content (~92%) within 30 min. While the mechanical properties of HEA and SPA containing hydrogels show significant differences compared to PACM-AGE hydrogel (tensile strength 2.5 MPa, elongation 47%), HEA containing PAHCM-AGE has a higher tensile strength (5.8 MPa) but lower elongation (19%). In contrast, SPA in the PASCM-AGE hydrogels led to both higher tensile strength (3.7 MPa) and greater elongation (92%), allowing for a broader range of hydrogel properties. An initial study on drug delivery behavior was conducted using PACM-AGE hydrogels loaded with photosensitizers, showing effective absorption, release, and antibacterial activity under light exposure. Abstract:A PAA (polyacrylic acid)-based nanocomposite hydrogel (CASM) reinforced with sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na), organo-montmorillonite (OMMT), and sodium lignosulfonate (SLS) was prepared using free radical polymerization. In this work, CMC-Na was utilized to enhance the viscosity of the system, while the electrostatic interaction between CMC-Na and OMMT facilitated the uniform dispersion of OMMT within the matrix. Additionally, SLS aided in the dispersion of the components, reducing the interaction forces between particles in the hydrogel, thereby improving its flexibility and extensibility. The results demonstrated that the synergistic effects of CMC-Na, OMMT, and SLS led to a hydrogel with a tensile strength of up to 74.5 KPa, a tensile strain exceeding 3600 %, and certain shape memory properties. Furthermore, the incorporation of SLS, which provides phenolic hydroxyl and sulfonic groups, significantly enhanced the adhesive properties of the hydrogel, achieving a peel strength of up to 1200 N/m on aluminum. The sulfonic groups also facilitated ion transport, resulting in excellent electrical conductivity (9.82 mS/cm) and strain sensitivity (GF=4.36). This approach of improving hydrogel properties through the incorporation of inorganic particles and cross-linked structures offers a novel strategy for the multifunctional modification of hydrogels.
Preparations of Tough and Conductive PAMPS/PAA Double Network Hydrogels Containing Cellulose Nanofibers and Polypyrroles

Abstract:To afford an intact double network (sample abbr.: DN) hydrogel, two-step crosslinking reactions of poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid) (i.e., PAMPS first network) and then poly(acrylic acid) (i.e., PAA second network) were conducted both in the presence of crosslinker (N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (MBAA)). Similar to the two-step processes, different contents of 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy (TEMPO) oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCN: 1, 2, and 3 wt.%) were initially dispersed in the first network solutions and then crosslinked. The TOCN-containing PAMPS first networks subsequently soaked in AA and crosslinker and conducted the second network crosslinking reactions (TOCN was then abbreviated as T for DN samples). As the third step, various (T–)DN hydrogels were then treated with different concentrations of FeCl3(aq) solutions (5, 50, 100, and 200 mM). Through incorporations of ferric ions into (T–)DN hydrogels, notably, three purposes are targeted: (i) strengthen the (T–)DN hydrogels through ionic bonding, (ii) significantly render ionic conductivity of hydrogels, and (iii) serve as a catalyst for the forth step to proceed with in situ chemical oxidative polymerizations of pyrroles to afford polypyrrole-containing (sample abbr.: Py) hydrogels [i.e., (T–)Py–DN samples]. The characteristic functional groups of PAMPS, PAA, and Py were confirmed by FT–IR. Uniform microstructures were observed by cryo scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM). These results indicated that homogeneous composites of T–Py–DN hydrogels were obtained through the four-step process. All dry samples showed similar thermal degradation behaviors from the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The T2–Py5–DN sample (i.e., containing 2 wt.% TOCN with 5 mM FeCl3(aq) treatment) showed the best tensile strength and strain at breaking properties (i.e., σTb = 450 kPa and εTb = 106%). With the same compositions, a high conductivity of 3.34 × 10−3 S/cm was acquired. The tough T2–Py5–DN hydrogel displayed good conductive reversibility during several “stretching-and-releasing” cycles of 50–100–0%, demonstrating a promising candidate for bioelectronic or biomaterial applications.

Abstract:A novel series of nanocomposite hydrogels (TAD gels) with high mechanical strength and excellent UV-shielding property were prepared by in situ free-radical copolymerization of acrylamide (AM) and N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA) in aqueous solutions of TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs). It was found that the TiO2 NPs were uniformly dispersed in the copolymer matrix and acted as inorganic crosslinking agents in TAD gels owing to their hydrogen bonding interactions with polymer chains. The TAD gels exhibited excellent mechanical properties such as large elongations at break, high elastic moduli, and ultimate stresses, all of these properties as well as swelling ratios of TAD gels could be easily controlled by changing the AM ratios and TiO2 contents in the initial solutions. In addition, the TAD gels with low AM ratios could be prepared into thin films in a customized Teflon model and these films showed high transparency in visible light but could completely block the UV light with wavelength below 366 nm and prevent the methylene blue from degradation under UV irradiation. Development of a Tough, Self-Healing Polyampholyte Terpolymer Hydrogel Patch with Enhanced Skin Adhesion via Tuning the Density and Strength of Ion-Pair Associations

Abstract:Polyampholyte (PA) hydrogels have great potential for biomedical applications, owing to their high toughness and good self-recovery and self-healing (SELF) behavior in addition to their physical properties similar to human tissue. However, their implementation as practical biomedical skin patches or wearable devices has so far been limited by their insufficient transdermal adhesion strength. In this work, a new polyampholytic terpolymer (PAT) hydrogel with enhanced skin adhesion was developed using a novel and simple strategy that tunes the structure of ion-pair associations (IPAs), acting as cross-links, in the hydrogel via adding an extra neutral monomer component into the network without changing the total charge balance. The PAT hydrogels were synthesized by the terpolymerization of the neutral monomer N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAAm) (or 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA)) as well as the cationic monomer 3-(methacryloylamino) propyl-trimethylammonium chloride (MPTC) and the anionic monomer sodium p-styrenesulfonate (NaSS). Their IPA, which determines their network structure, was modulated by varying the feed concentration of the neutral monomer, Cnm. An increase of Cnm within an optimized Cnm window (0.3-0.4 M) decreased the cross-linking density (strength and density of the IPAs) of the PAT hydrogels, reducing the softening temperature and Young's modulus, which increased compliance but maintained sufficient mechanical strength and thereby maximized the contact surface and enhanced skin adhesion. The DMAAm monomers, compared to the HEMA monomers, produced the higher skin adhesion of the PAT hydrogel, which was explained by the difference in their reactivity to the MPTC and NaSS. This study demonstrated this new method to develop the PAT hydrogels with excellent skin adhesion and biocompatibility while maintaining good toughness, compliance, and SELF behavior and the potential of the PAT hydrogels for biomedical skin patches and wearable devices.
An All-in-One Tannic Acid-Containing Hydrogel Adhesive with High Toughness, Notch Insensitivity, Self-Healability, Tailorable Topography, and Strong, Instant, and On-Demand Underwater Adhesion

Abstract:Hydrogels that are mechanically tough and capable of strong underwater adhesion can lead to a paradigm shift in the design of adhesives for a variety of biomedical applications. We hereby innovatively develop a facile but efficient strategy to prepare hydrogel adhesives with strong and instant underwater adhesion, on-demand detachment, high toughness, notch-insensitivity, self-healability, low swelling index, and tailorable surface topography. Specifically, a polymerization lyophilization conjugation fabrication method was proposed to introduce tannic acid (TA) into the covalent network consisting of polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) of substantially high molecular weight. The presence of TA facilitated wet adhesion to various substrates by forming collectively strong noncovalent bonds and offering hydrophobicity to allow water repellence and also provided a reversible cross-link within the binary network to improve the mechanical performance of the gels. The long-chain PEGDA enhanced the efficacy and stability of TA conjugation and contributed to gel mechanics and adhesion by allowing chain diffusion and entanglement formation. Moreover, PEGDA/TA hydrogels were demonstrated to be biocompatible and capable of accelerating wound healing in a skin wound animal model as compared to commercial tissue adhesives and can be applied for the treatment of both epidermal and intracorporeal wounds. Our study provides new, critical insight into the design principle of all-in-one hydrogels with outstanding mechanical and adhesive properties and can potentially enhance the efficacy of hydrogel adhesives for wound healing.
