Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies are widely applied in various industries and research fields and are currently the subject of intensive investigation and development. However, high-performance materials that are suitable for 3D printing are still in short supply, which is a major limitation for 3D printing, particularly for biomedical applications. The physicochemical properties of single constituent materials may not be sufficient to meet the needs of modern biotechnology development and production. To enhance the materials' performance and broaden their applications, this work designed and tested a series of titanate nanofiller (nanowire and nanotube)-enhanced polycaprolactone (PCL) composites that were 3D-printable and provided superior mechanical properties. By grafting two different functional groups (phenyl- and thiol-terminated ligands), the nanofiller surface showed improved hydrophobicity, which significantly improved their dispersion in the PCL matrix. After characterizing the surface modification, we evaluated the significance of the homogeneity of the ceramic nanofiller in terms of printability, formability, and mechanical strength. Melt electrowriting additive manufacturing was used to fabricate microfibers of PCL and PCL/nanofiller composites. Improved nanofiller dispersion enabled intact and uniform sample morphology, and in contrast, nanofiller aggregation greatly varied the viscosity during the printing process, which could result in poorly printed structures. Importantly, the modified ceramic/PCL composite delivered enhanced and stable mechanical properties, where its Young's modulus was measured to be 1.67 GPa, which is more than 7 times higher compared to that of pristine PCL (0.22 GPa). Retaining the cell safety properties (comparable to PCL), the concept of enhancing biocompatible polymers with modified nanofillers shows great potential in the field of customized 3D printing for biomedicine.
3D Printing of Fiber-Reinforced Calcined Clay-Limestone-Based Cementitious Materials: From Mixture Design to Printability Evaluation

Abstract:Sustainability and limitations in embedded reinforcement are the main obstacles in digital fabrication with concrete. This study proposed a 3D printable fiber-reinforced calcined clay-limestone-based cementitious material (FR-LC3). The binder systems incorporating calcined clay (CC) and limestone filler (LF) were optimized by determining the flow characteristics and water retention ability of the paste. The effect of fiber volume on the key fresh and mechanical properties of the fiber-reinforced mortars made with the optimized binder was evaluated. A combination of offline assessments and inline printing were employed to investigate the printability of the FR-LC3 with various binder systems and viscosity-modifying admixture (VMA) dosages. The results revealed that the binary system with 20% CC and the ternary system containing 30% CC and 15% LF were highly advantageous, with enhanced packing density, robustness, and water retention ability. Incorporating 2% 6-mm steel fiber contributed to the highest 28-day compressive and flexural strengths and toughness without significantly compromising the fluidity. Finally, the developed FR-LC3 mixtures were successfully printed using an extrusion-based 3D printer. The LF addition in the ternary system decreased the maximum buildable height of a single-wall printed object while reducing the SP/VMA ratio significantly increased the height due to enhanced yield stress and thixotropy.

Abstract:Advances in additive manufacturing create unique opportunities for the investigation of permeability of fine-grained soils. The permeability of fine-grained soils, such as clays, plays an important role in various design considerations in the geotechnical, environmental, and stormwater management systems. This research investigates the application of 3D printed specimens in studying the hydraulic and mechanical properties of clayey soils. The effects of 3D printing, specifically direct binder jet printing, on the permeability, and other physical properties of clay were investigated. Cylindrical clay specimens were prepared using an advanced direct binder jet printing and tested in a flexible wall permeameter and triaxial compression setup under effective confining stresses representing clay at very shallow depths. The results of this study show that the 3D printing process affects the permeability of clay through changes in physical properties such as the specific surface area. However, the printing provides consistent and repeatable specimens with very low disturbance and efficient controlled geometry. Also, due to stiffer 3D printed specimen, less confinement impact was observed in 3D printed specimens. Also, 3D printed specimens showed significantly higher shear strength and friction angle. The outcome of this research could pave the path for future studies dealing with flow through fractured clays.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies, including 3D mortar printing (3DMP), 3D concrete printing (3DCP), and Liquid Deposition Modeling (LDM), offer significant advantages in construction. They reduce project time, costs, and resource requirements while enabling free design possibilities and automating construction processes, thereby reducing workplace accidents. However, AM faces challenges in achieving superior mechanical performance compared to traditional methods due to poor interlayer bonding and material anisotropies. This study aims to enhance structural properties in AM constructions by embedding 3D-printed polymeric meshes in clay-based mortars. Clay-based materials are chosen for their environmental benefits. The study uses meshes with optimal geometry from the literature, printed with three widely used polymeric materials in 3D printing applications (PLA, ABS, and PETG). To reinforce the mechanical properties of the printed specimens, the meshes were strategically placed in the interlayer direction during the 3D printing process. The results show that the 3D-printed specimens with meshes have improved flexural strength, validating the successful integration of these reinforcements.

Abstract:The DMFT index is one of the simplest and most commonly used indices in epidemiologic surveys of dental caries. It quantifies dental health status based on the number of carious, missing and filled teeth. The index, however, does not provide an accurate description of previous dental care. Nor does it provide information regarding the severity of the carious attack or the indicated treatment. Thus, a revision of the DMFT index was developed. This involved a division of the "D" component into four separate categories. With the addition of these categories, the index remains simple, and yet provides a description of one's previous dental experience. It further shows the extent of dental services needed by the population, which can be interpreted in terms of treatment hours and costs. This modified index has been successfully utilized in a dental epidemiologic survey of 1672 schoolchildren, 14-16 yr of age. It was apparent that the additional components provided significant data for treatment planning as well as dental health status.
On the Mechanical Performance of Polylactic Material Reinforced by Ceramic in Fused Filament Fabrication

Abstract:This study addresses the potential of using ceramics-based filaments as a feedstock material in an additive manufacturing process. Tensile specimens of PLA-ceramic (PLC) material are manufactured using a fused deposition modelling process, applying various printing parameters including printing angle and part orientation. Mechanical testing is performed on both the filaments and 3D-printed parts, and the related engineering quantities are derived. The experimental results show that PLC wire properties are substantially restored for the horizontal and lateral printing orientations, with only a 9% reduction in stiffness. In addition, a typical elastic-plastic response is achieved with these orientations, allowing the PLC to achieve excellent stiffness and elongation-at-break performance. The mechanical performance of the PLC is explained by the large proportion of continuous filaments along the loading direction. In addition, the printing angle is found to be a secondary factor allowing for layups at -45°/+45° and 0°/90°, resulting in the best tensile performance. The downside of using PLC is the lack of mechanical transfer, which is associated with weak interfacial behaviour and the inability to achieve high tensile strength.

Abstract:Concrete 3D printing, an innovative construction technology, offers reduced material waste, increased construction speed, and the ability to create complex and customized shapes that are challenging to achieve with traditional methods. This study delves into the unique fresh-state performance required for 3D printing concrete, discussing buildability, extrudability, and shape retention in terms of concrete rheology, which can be modified using admixtures. Currently most 3D printing concretes feature high cement contents, with little use of secondary cementitious materials. This leads to high embodied carbon, and addressing this is a fundamental objective of this work. The research identifies attapulgite, bentonite, and sepiolite clay as potential concrete admixtures to tailor concrete rheology. Eight low-carbon concrete mixes are designed to incorporate GGBS at a 50% replacement level and are used to measure the influence of each clay on the concrete rheology at varying dosages. A comprehensive rheological test protocol is designed and carried out on all mixes, together with other tests including slump-flow and compression strength. The objective is to determine the applicability of each clay in improving the printability of low-carbon concrete. The findings reveal that at a dosage of 0.5%, sepiolite was seen to improve static yield stress, dynamic yield stress, and rate of re-flocculation, resulting in improved printability. The addition of attapulgite and sepiolite at a dosage of 0.5% by mass of binder increased compressive strength significantly; bentonite had very little influence. These gains are not repeated at 1% clay content, indicating that there may be an optimum clay content. The results are considered encouraging and show the potential of these clays to enhance the performance of low-carbon concrete in 3D printing applications.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D)-printed concrete is a highly promising construction material that will allow for the realisation of formless construction and digital design. The constructability, mechanical properties, and durability of the matrix have a determining effect on the structural applicability of the concrete. In this study, to alter the brittle failure mode of common printed concrete, polyvinyl alcohol fibres were incorporated into a cementitious printing ink. The mix proportion was optimised based on the construction requirements in terms of the flowability, setting time, stacking stability, and load-bearing capacity. Next, the effects of the printing and loading paths on the mechanical properties and durability were investigated experimentally. Computed tomography (CT) imaging was employed to determine the defect distributions of the 3D-printed samples as well as the mechanisms responsible for the observed differences in their mechanical properties and durability. The CT images showed that a greater number of defects were present between the adjacent strips than between the layers. This microscale heterogeneity induced macroscale anisotropy in the printed samples. Further, the printing and loading paths also affected the mechanical properties and durability of the samples. The flexural strength was more sensitive to the interfacial defects as compared to the compressive strength. The stacking-up method is better suited for increasing the density of the printed matrix, resulting in greater chloride ion penetration at the interface than is the case for the matrix, which is affected by the interfacial defects.
Polypropylene with clay–filled for fused filament fabrication: comparative study of the mechanical performance of injected and 3d printed composite

Abstract:Fused filament fabrication (FFF) is one of the most used 3D printing techniques; however, the lack of printable materials is its main limitation. Polypropylene (PP) is a promising thermoplastic polymer that offers cost and chemical stability advantages over PLA, but its dimensional instability often leads to poor mechanical performance of printed parts. In this study, a PP filament for FFF was developed, incorporating copper ion-saturated clay (Cu 2+ ) and copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs), and the effect of various clay percentages on the tensile properties of the polymer matrix was investigated. The goal was to evaluate the potential use of polypropylene/clay composites as raw materials for FFF. The PP with clay did not form intercalation or exfoliation systems due to the poor matrix-filler interaction, behaving as a microcomposite. Chemical and bactericidal properties were not significantly affected compared to pure PP after the incorporation of clay. However, the thermal stability improved, and the β phase was induced in the crystallization process, enhancing layer adhesion, and reducing deformation during the PP printing process. All injected composites exhibited improved tensile properties, while the opposite effect was observed for printed composites. The best formulation was found for the composite with a 3.0% weight loading of MMT-type II, which showed a 14% increase in tensile modulus for the injected piece and a 17.6% decrease for the printed piece. Despite the reduced mechanical performance in printed pieces compared to injected ones, the material demonstrated processability and printability due to the reduced deformation, which the polymer matrix alone under industrial conditions does not permit.

Abstract:The cost of manufacturing a structural ceramic component is a direct function of production quantity. Small-quantity production, such as prototypes manufactured by conventional methods, leads to long production times and high unit costs. The advent of fused filament fabrication of ceramic (FFFC) technology has created an opportunity to reduce lead time and cost and produce complex-shaped bodies with tailored sized and controlled porosity in small-quantity production runs, which is an advantage over traditional methods of fabrication of ceramic products. In this work, we propose to study the feasibility of manufacturing a low-cost composite filament, for FFFC processing, based on micrometric alumina (Al2O3) powder and polylactic acid (PLA) polymer as a binder system without any additive. Three compositions with the ceramic-to-polymer ratios (by volume) were considered: 70% Al2O3/30% PLA, 60% Al2O3/40% PLA, and 50% Al2O3/50% PLA. For that, the customized technological chain is adapted. It consists of four principal steps: (i) grinding in a ball mill and drying the raw powders; (ii) extrusion into ceramic-polymer filament; (iii) printing of ceramic-polymer samples; and (iv) thermal debinding and sintering samples to obtain the ceramic product. The physical, microstructural, and mechanical properties of raw materials, composite filament, and green and sintering samples are investigated and the optimal composition is chosen dependent on both homogeneous repartition of the Al2O3 powder and the printability of filament. The 3D sintered material obtained by 60% Al2O3/40% PLA composite filament shows the best flexural strength value of 332 ± 21 MPa with a relative density of ~ 91%, which may be sufficient for several technical applications. Note that the 60% Al2O3/40% PLA filament composite can easily be used to print a complex geometry using a standard nozzle of 0.4 up to 0.8 and does not show signs of brittleness during the printing process allowing it to become a promising material for the FFFC process. Based on the results of this paper and previous studies, FFFC technology can be a technically feasible and economically viable process for manufacturing ceramic components under certain conditions.

Abstract:The increasing popularity of additive manufacturing technologies in the prototyping and building industry requires the application of novel, improved composite materials. In this paper, we propose the use of a novel 3D printing cement-based composite material with natural, granulated cork, and additional reinforcement using a continuous polyethylene interlayer net combined with polypropylene fibre reinforcement. Our assessment of different physical and mechanical properties of the used materials during the 3D printing process and after curing verified the applicability of the new composite. The composite exhibited orthotropic properties, and the compressive toughness in the direction of layer stacking was lower than that perpendicular to it, by 29.8% without net reinforcement, 42.6% with net reinforcement, and 42.9% with net reinforcement and an additional freeze–thaw test. The use of the polymer net as a continuous reinforcement led to decreased compressive toughness, lowering it on average by 38.5% for the stacking direction and 23.8% perpendicular to the stacking direction. However, the net reinforcement additionally lowered slumping and elephant's foot effects. Moreover, the net reinforcement added residual strength, which allowed for the continuous use of the composite material after the failure of the brittle material. Data obtained during the process can be used for further development and improvement of 3D-printable building materials.

Extrusion-Based 3D Printing of Ceramic Pastes: Mathematical Modeling and In Situ Shaping Retention Approach

Abstract:Extrusion-based three-dimensional (3D) printing methods are preferred and emerging approaches for freely digital fabrication of ceramics due to ease of use, low investment, high utilization of materials, and good adaptability to multi-materials. However, systematic knowledge still lacks an explanation for what is their 3D printability. Moreover, some uncontrollable factors including extrudate shape retention and nonuniform drying inevitably limit their industrial applications. The purpose of this research was to present a new shaping retention method based on mathematical synthesis modeling for extrusion-based 3D-printing of ceramic pastes. Firstly, the steady-state equilibrium equation of the extrusion process was derived to provide clearer theoretical indications than purely experimental methods. Furthermore, a mathematical description framework was synthesized to better understand the extrusion-based 3D-printing of ceramic pastes from several realms: pastes rheology, extrudability, shape-holdability, and drying kinetics. Secondly, for eliminating shaping drawbacks (e.g., deformation and cracks) originating from non-digital control factors, we put forward a digital shape-retention technology inspired by the generalized drying kinetics of porous materials, which was different from existing retention solutions, e.g., freezing retention, thermally induced gelation, and using removable support structures. In addition, we developed an in situ hot air flow drying device easily attached to the nozzle of existing 3D printers. Confirmatory 3D-printing experiments of thin-walled cone-shape benchmark parts and the fire arrowhead-like object clearly demonstrated that the presented shape-retention method not only upgraded layer-by-layer forming capability but also enabled digital control of extrudate solidification. In addition, many more experimental results statistically showed that both fully solid parts and purely thin-wall parts had higher dimensional accuracy and better surface quality than the offline drying method. The 3D printed ceramic products with complex profiled surfaces conceivably demonstrated that our improved extrusion-based 3D-printing process of ceramic pastes has game-changing potentials beyond the traditional craftsmanship capacity.
3D printing of a continuous fiber-reinforced composite based on a coaxial Kevlar/PLA filament

Abstract:Additive manufacturing has allowed for the production of complex and mass customized geometries, but often at the expense of mechanical performance, a penalty which can be in part mitigated with the fabrication of composite parts. Thermoplastic structures fabricated with material extrusion additive manufacturing stand to be improved in terms of fracture toughness with the integration of continuous fibers. The present research program has investigated the production of a continuously reinforced filament to be used in open-source fused filament fabrication systems. Three different volume fractions of Kevlar fibers were incorporated into a polylactic acid (PLA) thermoplastic filament. It was observed that a 20% fiber volume fraction resulted in a doubling of the tensile strength relative to the unreinforced PLA parts. High-velocity impact tests were also performed on the reinforced printed thermoplastic material, and it was observed that the composite with the highest fiber volume fraction provided an impact energy resistance improved by a factor of four, relative to the plain PLA. The reinforced fibers have shown to restrain the penetration of the projectile at velocities similar to those that perforated the unreinforced PLA. The present work has demonstrated the production of printed composites without the need of modifying the extruding systems of a commercial 3D printer. This approach could represent an alternate and feasible process for producing continuously reinforced 3D-printed thermoplastic parts with utility for high-velocity impact applications.
Rheological characterization of ultra-high performance concrete for 3D printing

Abstract:The authors recently developed a 3D-printable ultra-high performance fiber-reinforced concrete (3DP-UHPFRC) for additive construction of structural members with significantly reduced reliance on steel bars. This study investigates the rheological behavior of the developed 3DP-UHPFRC. The effects of two major factors affecting the performance of 3DP-UHPFRC, namely steel fiber volume (0, 1%, and 2%) and nano-clay (NC) content (0, 0.1%, and 0.2% by binder mass) on workability, static yield stress, dynamic yield stress, and apparent viscosity were determined. Test results showed that the inclusion of steel fibers and NC reduced the workability and led to a significant increase in the static yield stress, dynamic yield stress, and apparent viscosity. However, the effect of NC content on the rheological properties became negligible in the mixtures made with 2% fiber content. Similarly, the effect of steel fiber volume became negligible in the mixtures made with 0.2% NC. In addition, the influence of changes in rheology due to the addition of steel fiber and NC on the extrudability and buildability of the mixtures were investigated by 3D-printing of 500 mm high hollow columns with three different print speeds. The results showed all mixtures exhibited satisfactory extrudability (i.e., no blockage of extruder or tearing of filaments was observed). In addition, the buildability of the mixtures increased as the steel fiber and NC contents increased.

Abstract:The absence of standardized 3D concrete printing mixtures drives ongoing material exploration. This study investigates mineral and bio-based viscosity modifying agents (VMAs) application in fiber-reinforced cementitious mortar. Nano-montmorillonite, sepiolite, and bacterial cells function as supplementary materials, partially substituting cement with fly ash for sustainability assessment and compatibility evaluation in our study. Mechanical tests encompass compressive, flexural strength, and interlayer bonding in 3D-printed samples. Based on the results, incorporating 0.150% Polyamide (PA) fiber positively affected interlayer bonding strength and deceleration of the flow loss rate. Additionally, adding clays decreased workability and compressive strength but improved interlayer bonding and flexural properties. On the other hand, substituting 20% of cement with FA improved the flowability of the mixture and showed great compatibility with other materials during printing. Applying a cement paste layer was evaluated as a practical method for bond enhancement at the interface. Bacteria incorporation improved flexural strength but weakened interlayer bonding. However, the combination of bacteria and clays resulted in a superior improvement in mechanical properties. This study demonstrates clays and bacteria's potential in enhancing rheological and mechanical features in cementitious fiber-reinforced mortar. Notably, this study introduces bacteria cells and sepiolite as rheology modifiers in 3D concrete printing for the first time. Additionally, it presents a novel dog-bone-shaped structure test for assessing interlayer bond performance.

Abstract:Three-dimensional printing with cement-based materials is a promising manufacturing technique for civil engineering applications that already allows for the design and the construction of complex and highly customized structures using a layer-by-layer deposition approach. The extrusion mechanism is one of the most expensive parts of the 3D printer. Also, for low-scale 3D printers, based on the shape of the extruder and the geometry limitation of the mixing blade, the 3D mixture is often limited to a narrow range of materials due to the risk of layer splitting or blockage. Therefore, there is a need to develop affordable and feasible alternatives to the current design-fabrication-application approach of 3D printers. In this paper, various newly designed mixtures of fiber-reinforced mortars that can be 3D printed using only a commercially available screw pump are analyzed based on their fresh properties and mechanical characteristics. The results, in terms of extrudability, buildability, flowability, and flexural and compressive strengths, highlight the potential of using this technology for constructing complex structures with high strength and durability. Also, the reduced facility requirements of this approach enable 3D printing to be made more available for civil engineering applications. With further innovations to come in the future, this method and these mixtures can be extended for the sustainable and economically feasible printing of single-family housing units.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing of casting cores and molds is state of the art in industrial application today. However, improving the properties of chemically bonded casting cores regarding temperature stability, bending strength, and surface quality is still a major challenge. The process of slurry-based 3D printing allows the fabrication of dense structures and therefore sinterable casting cores. This paper presents a study of the slurry-based fabrication of ceramic layer compounds focusing on the drying process and the achievable properties in slurry-based 3D printing of casting cores. This study aims at contributing to a better understanding of the interrelations between the drying conditions in the 3D printing process and the properties of sintered specimens relating thereto. The drying intensity influenced by an IR heater as well as the drying periods are varied for layer thicknesses of 50, 75, and 100 μm. Within this study, a process window applicable for 3D printing of sinterable casting cores is identified and further indications are given for optimization potentials. At layer heights of 75 μm, bending strengths between ~8 and 11 MPa as well as densities of around 50% of the theoretical density were achieved. Since the mean roughness depth Rz is determined to be <30 μm in plane, an application of slurry-based 3D printing in investment casting is conceivable.

Investigations of polylactic acid reinforced composite feedstock filaments for multimaterial three-dimensional printing applications

Abstract:This paper reports properties of four different filaments prepared from (i) virgin polylactic acid, (ii) polylactic acid reinforced with polyvinyl chloride, (iii) polylactic acid reinforced with wood powder, and (iv) polylactic acid with reinforcement of Fe 3 O 4 prepared with twin-screw extrusion for possible multimaterial three-dimensional printing. The results suggest that the melt flow rate of composite increases with the increase in reinforcements except for wood powder, which has shown a negative trend. Mechanical properties were also reduced with the loading but with the increase in the Fe 3 O 4 content, these properties were improved. It has been observed that with reinforcement of polyvinyl chloride from 10 wt% to 25 wt% peak elongation and break elongation were reduced by 47.61% and 50%, respectively. Further, thermal analysis suggests that all samples were stable but for reinforced samples, the integral energy has decreased significantly in successive cycles. The vibration sample magnetometery of samples suggested that magnetic properties were dependent on the content of Fe 3 O 4 present in the composite.
[Analysis of schistosomiasis endemic situation in Jiangling County from 2004 to 2013].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To analyze the schistosomiasis endemic situation and understand its transmission trend in Jiangling County from 2004 to 2013, so as to improving the schistosomiasis control. METHODS The relevant data of schistosomiasis were collected and analyzed statistically in Jiangling county from 2004-2013. RESULTS The human prevalence of schistosomiasis was decreased from 10.22% in 2004 to 0.63% in 2013 with the descend rate of 93.84%, and the notable descend rate was 76.92% from 2009-2013. The cattle infection rate was decreased yearly from 7.59% in 2004 to 0 in 2013. The appearance rate of frames with living Oncomelania hupensis snails and the infection rate of snails reduce by 17.53% and 100% respectively. CONCLUSIONS After 10-year control, the endemic situation of schistosomiasis in Jiangling County decreases and is at a low level. However, the risk factors of transmission still exist. Therefore, the comprehensive control measures still should be enhanced continuously.
Mechanical behavior of FRP sheets reinforced 3D elements printed with cementitious materials

Abstract:A method to improve the mechanical behavior of 3D-printed elements is presented. 3D-printed elements are orthotropic and weak in their interlayers; thus, FRPs, which are easy-formed, light-weighted and high-strength, are ideal materials to enhance 3D-printed elements. To investigate the reinforcement effect, uniaxial compression tests were conducted on circular column specimens, and four-point flexural tests were conducted on beam specimens. The results indicated that wrapping 3D-printed columns with FRPs changed their failure modes from brittle to ductile, increased the peak loads that they could endure by 1427.2–1792.0% and increased the largest deformations they could achieve by 833.9–1171.3% using different numbers of layers and types of reinforcement. For the 3D-printed beams reinforced with FRPs, the bearing capacities were increased by 179.6–604.5%, and their flexure deflections at their mid-spans were increased by 40.8–225.8%. The failure modes of the 3D-printed beams were affected by numbers of layers and types of reinforcement. Additionally, finite element analyses were conducted to simulate the failure modes of the 3D-printed elements based on the maximum stress criterion. The results showed that the predicted failure locations corresponded with the experimental failure locations observed. According to this study, 3D-printed elements reinforced with FRP sheets showed potential for future development and applications in construction.
