Abstract:Until now, a lot of low grade heat with temperatures of 40 similar to 55 degrees C, such as the condensing heat of a compression refrigeration system, hasn't been utilized to achieve cooling of 7 degrees C. The classical two-stage absorption refrigeration system is usually used to utilize heat sources as low as 55 similar to 65 degrees C. The absorption-compression refrigeration techniques show good potential. They still meet great difficulty in making use of 40 similar to 55 degrees C heat. Besides, it has been proved that transcritical cycles can work well under very wide operation temperatures. As a result, a transcritical subsystem is used to combine a two-stage absorption refrigeration one in this hybrid refrigeration system. R744 is chosen for the transcritical subsystem and the LiBr-H2O pair for the absorption subsystem. Based on the models of this new system, theoretical study is carried out on its performance. The main effects are discussed on the COPnet (the ratio of low grade heat powered refrigeration capacity to the generator heat consumption, which cut off that mechanical work powered) in this context. Results show that the proposed system can recycle the 40 similar to 55 degrees C condensing heat and COPnet can be improved by 2.5 similar to 55 % in utilizing 45 similar to 55 degrees C low grade heat, compared with the classical two-stage absorption refrigeration system.

Abstract:This paper proposes a modified vapor-compression refrigeration cycle (MVRC) system operating with the zeotropic mixture R290/R600a for domestic refrigerator-freezers. In the MVRC system, a phase separator is introduced to enhance the overall system performance. A theoretical energy and exergy analysis on the performance of the MVRC is carried out by using the developed mathematical model, and then compared with that of the traditional vapor-compression refrigeration cycle (TVRC) operating with the refrigerant R600a and the zeotropic mixture R290/R600a, respectively. According to the simulation results of these two cycles, the MVRC can give the most excellent performances in the COP (coefficient of performance), the volumetric refrigeration capacity, the total exergy destruction and the exergetic efficiency under the same given operating conditions. Therefore, the performance characteristics of the MVRC may show its promise in domestic refrigerator-freezer applications.

Abstract:Designing new refrigerants is a highly advanced field, where it is essential to create efficient refrigerants to meet the growing demand. However, the current approach of relying on experts' experience or existing refrigerant databases may not result in the best refrigerant. In this paper, a refrigerant selection method is proposed that combines the selection of refrigerants with the optimization of the refrigeration process, thus allowing for the selection of the best refrigerant based on the requirements of the refrigeration process for single and cascade system. The paper proposes the combination of properties databases of different refrigerants in the refrigeration process model, enabling both operating conditions and refrigerants to be decision variables. The coefficient of refrigeration performance (COP) serves as the objective function, with 285 compounds as candidate refrigerants. By optimizing this model, both the optimal refrigerant and operating conditions can be obtained simultaneously. However, due to the high complexity of the model, the authors propose an algorithm based on decomposition to efficiently solve the mixed integer nonlinear program, as it provides the best performance. Results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can achieve the optimization efficiently. Besides, the more complex the problem, the more time it can save.
A theoretical global optimization method for vapor-compression refrigeration systems based on entransy theory

Abstract:The vapor-compression refrigeration systems have been one of the essential energy conversion systems for humankind and exhausting huge amounts of energy nowadays. Surrounding the energy efficiency promotion of the systems, there are lots of effectual optimization methods but mainly relied on engineering experience and computer simulations rather than theoretical analysis due to the complex and vague physical essence. We attempt to propose a theoretical global optimization method based on in-depth physical analysis for the involved physical processes, i.e. heat transfer analysis for condenser and evaporator, through introducing the entransy theory and thermodynamic analysis for compressor and expansion valve. The integration of heat transfer and thermodynamic analyses forms the overall physical optimization model for the systems to describe the relation between all the unknown parameters and known conditions, which makes theoretical global optimization possible. With the aid of the mathematical conditional extremum solutions, an optimization equation group and the optimal configuration of all the unknown parameters are analytically obtained. Eventually, via the optimization of a typical vapor-compression refrigeration system with various working conditions to minimize the total heat transfer area of heat exchangers, the validity and superior of the newly proposed optimization method is proved.
Exergy and exergoeconomic analyses of serial and bypass two-stage compression on the household refrigerator-freezer and replacement of R436A refrigerant

Abstract:In this research, the performance of serial two-stage compression (STC) cycle and bypass two-stage compression (BTC) cycle on the household refrigerator-freezers is tested in the laboratory. Then, based on the results of the experiments, exergy, exergoeconomic analyses, and cycle optimization are carried out. Considering that replacing refrigerants in household refrigerator-freezers is one of the approaches to increase the performance and environmental impact of these systems, R436A refrigerant (46% Isobutene and 54% Propane mixture) is used and analyzed to replace previous refrigerants. Finally, the multi-objective optimization of the mentioned cycles is performed with both refrigerants. For analyses, two models of refrigerator-freezers with different cycles are used (STC cycle with R134a refrigerant and BTC cycle with R-600a refrigerant). In both models, two evaporators for refrigerator-freezer compartments are used. International standards (IEC 62552) are used to test refrigerator-freezers. MATLAB and REFPROP 9.1 software are used to model the systems. According to the results of the analyses, the STC cycle with R436A refrigerant has more total exergy destruction rate (0.727 kW) compared to R134a refrigerant. In the BTC cycle, in which the fresh food compartment (FFC) and freezer compartment (FZC) operate, the total exergy destruction rate with R-600a refrigerant (0.422 kW) is less than with R436A refrigerant. In the case of the BTC cycle in which only the FZC operates, the total exergy destruction rate with R-600a refrigerant (0.455 kW) is less than with R436A refrigerant. The most exergoeconomic factor among cycle equipment is related to the compressor (about 98%). The highest COP value between cycles is related to the STC cycle with R134a refrigerant.

Abstract:In the current era of renewable energy transition, efficient hydrogen storage is indispensable for overcoming intermittent challenges and enabling the widespread adoption of clean energy technologies. Machine learning is crucial for optimizing hydrogen storage by providing predictive analytics and data-driven insights to enhance storage efficiency and address complex operational challenges. This study would evaluate various machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques, such as neural networks, genetic algorithms, Support Vector Machines, and Response Surface Methodology to optimize the composition of mixed refrigerants for cryo-compressed hydrogen storage. The research would aim to determine which models demonstrate superior performance in predicting the most effective refrigerant compositions for maximizing storage capacity, efficiency, and safety while minimizing energy consumption and environmental impact. The Method based on Removal Effect of Criteria (MEREC) method will be employed to ascertain priority weights, which will then be inputted into K-means machine learning clustering algorithms for model grouping, optimizing efficiency and organization in hydrogen storage research and development. The optimization results based on the objective function developed indicate that a feasible combination approximately is 30 % C2*, 20 % C1, 12 % C3, 10 % n-C4, 8 % i-C5, 13 % N 2 , 5 % R14, and 2 % H 2 . The MEREC method assigned weightage percentages to form clusters with relevance holding the highest priority at 0.37, followed by skill requirement at 0.23. Sensitivity analysis was performed to examine the prioritization of the best models identified from the cluster analysis. From the best cluster i.e. cluster one, among the five best models SVM- model 7 showed the best result. The concluding remarks deduced that SVM is the best model and it was followed by adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system-Genetic algorithm (ANFIS-GA). By comparing the efficacy of different ML and AI approaches, the study could provide valuable insights into the most suitable methodologies for designing efficient and reliable cryo-compressed hydrogen storage systems.

Abstract:Education's evolution in the context of energy systems is essential for addressing sustainable energy challenges and developing a workforce equipped for future innovations, emphasizing both formal curricula and informal lifelong learning through successful energy case studies. As the global energy sector transforms to reduce carbon emissions and reliance on fossil fuels, innovations in renewable technologies like solar thermal are pivotal for promoting energy security and economic stability, supported by an educational foundation that fosters awareness and technical skills for sustainable development. Exposure to successful renewable energy systems, such as solar-powered refrigeration, offers an informal educational experience that enhances understanding and supports global educational goals, initiating with the innovative design and optimization of these systems using artificial intelligence (neural networks). Based on this formulation, the current article developed two sustainable energy systems by comparing the refrigeration cycles with two different operating fluids and various arrangements, and multi-objective optimization with an evolutionary genetic algorithm is performed for the proposed systems. The studied systems are refrigeration cycles using an ejector and without an ejector with two working fluids of lithium bromide and lithium chloride. The present work's main aim is to examine the working fluid and refrigeration system arrangements. Energy and economic modeling were performed for the proposed systems, and then parametric analysis and two-objective optimization were extracted. Parameters such as generator temperature, condenser temperature, absorber temperature, and evaporator temperature, which significantly impact the proposed system's performance, have been selected as decision parameters, and parametric analysis has been extracted for them. In addition to the mentioned parameters, diffusion mixing efficiency, nozzle efficiency, and heat exchanger have also been studied in the ejector asset system. To find the best values of decision variables, multi-objective optimization for both arrangements is conducted, and results are presented. The results have indicated that the refrigeration system using lithium chloride working fluid without an ejector achieves a coefficient of performance of 0.766 and a cost of 0.922 /h). The outcomes of this work can play a critical role for higher education institutions in advancing innovative solutions to pressing energy challenges. Lifelong learning, at the heart of educational innovation, can benefit from the integration of sustainable energy systems as a core component of informal education through the optimization of ejector refrigeration systems.

Abstract:Refrigeration systems are complex, non-linear, multi-modal, and multi-dimensional. However, traditional methods are based on a trial and error process to optimize these systems, and a global optimum operating point cannot be guaranteed. Therefore, this work aims to study a two-stage vapor compression refrigeration system (VCRS) through a novel and robust hybrid multi-objective grey wolf optimizer (HMOGWO) algorithm. The system is modeled using response surface methods (RSM) to investigate the impacts of design variables on the set responses. Firstly, the interaction between the system components and their cycle behavior is analyzed by building four surrogate models using RSM. The model fit statistics indicate that they are statistically significant and agree with the design data. Three conflicting scenarios in bi-objective optimization are built focusing on the overall system following the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) and Linear Programming Technique for Multidimensional Analysis of Preference (LINMAP) decision-making methods. The optimal solutions indicate that for the first to third scenarios, the exergetic efficiency (EE) and capital expenditure (CAPEX) are optimized by 33.4% and 7.5%, and the EE and operational expenditure (OPEX) are improved by 27.4% and 19.0%. The EE and global warming potential (GWP) are also optimized by 27.2% and 19.1%, where the proposed HMOGWO outperforms the MOGWO and NSGA-II. Finally, the K-means clustering technique is applied for Pareto characterization. Based on the research outcomes, the combined RSM and HMOGWO techniques have proved an excellent solution to simulate and optimize two-stage VCRS.

Abstract:In response to the needs of energy policy in Taiwan, it is important and urgent to promote energy efficiency in energy-intensive systems and equipment, especially air conditioning. Conventional refrigeration systems rely on experienced human beings to operate the load of components. This method is inefficient and non-reliable and causes excessive energy consumption. The present study applies the equal marginal utility theory (EMUT) from economics to a typical refrigeration system for energy saving analysis. The result of the analysis suggests that energy consumption in part-load conditions of the system was reduced by 4.74% by optimising the load on online components without significantly modifying the configuration (replacement of equipment or resetting of parameters) of the equipment. Therefore, optimising the energy use on the basis of the EMUT is highly recommended for decreasing energy consumption in air-conditioning systems.

Abstract:Refrigeration at low temperatures is an important requirement for long storage duration where compression cascade systems can offer very efficient and eco-friendly solution opportunities in the context of the current environmental preoccupations, by using innocuous refrigerants pairs as working fluids. In the present work, energy- and exergy-based modelling is performed for fluid pairs of natural refrigerants with low or no GWP and ODP effects. R744/R717, R744/R290, R744/R600, R744/R600a, R744/R1270 pairs are considered, where the low-temperature loop (LT) is filled with carbon dioxide, while the high-temperature loop (HT) employs either ammonia, propane, butane, isobutene or propylene. Optimised system performance is assessed for the effect of temperature variations in the evaporator–condenser. To this aim, several optimisation methods are evaluated to best determine the evaporation temperature in the HT loop that maximises the system's COP. With the suitable optimising method selected, optimal operating conditions are successively computed for each refrigerant pair, and the resulting performances are determined for condensation and evaporation temperatures in the respective ranges of 25–50 °C and − 55 to − 30 °C. It can be observed that for these conditions, the highest optimised performances are achieved with the R744/R1270 and R744/R717 pairs.

Abstract:A thermodynamic cycle usually consists of heat transfer processes in heat exchangers and heat-work conversion processes in compressors, expanders and/or turbines. This paper presents a new optimization method for effective improvement of thermodynamic cycle performance with the combination of entransy theory and thermodynamics. The heat transfer processes in a gas refrigeration cycle are analyzed by entransy theory and the heat-work conversion processes are analyzed by thermodynamics. The combination of these two analysis yields a mathematical relation directly connecting system requirements, e.g. cooling capacity rate and power consumption rate, with design parameters, e.g. heat transfer area of each heat exchanger and heat capacity rate of each working fluid, without introducing any intermediate variable. Based on this relation together with the conditional extremum method, we theoretically derive an optimization equation group. Simultaneously solving this equation group offers the optimal structural and operating parameters for every single gas refrigeration cycle and furthermore provides several useful optimization criteria for all the cycles. Finally, a practical gas refrigeration cycle is taken as an example to show the application and validity of the newly proposed optimization method. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Modelling of Compressors in an Industrial CO _2 -Based Operational Cooling System Using ANN for Energy Management Purposes.

Abstract:Large scale cooling installations usually have high energy consumption and fluctuating power demands. There are several ways to control energy consumption and power requirements through intelligent energy and power management, such as utilizing excess heat, thermal energy storage and local renewable energy sources. Intelligent energy and power management in an operational setting is only possible if the time-varying performance of the individual components of the energy system is known. This paper presents an approach to model the compressors in an industrial, operational two-stage cooling system, with CO2 as the working fluid, located in an advanced food distribution warehouse in Norway. An artificial neural network is adopted to model the compressors using the operational data. The model is trained with cooling medium evaporation and condensation temperature, suction gas temperature and compressor operating frequency, and outputs electrical power load and cooling load. The best results are found by using a single hidden layer with 45 hidden neurons and a hyperbolic tangent activation function trained with the Adam optimizer, with a resulting mean squared error as low as 0.08% for both the training and validation data sets. The trained model will be part of a system implemented in a real-world setting to determine the cooling load, compressor power load, and coefficient of performance. An intelligent energy management system will utilize the model for energy and power optimization of the cooling system by storing energy in a thermal energy storage, using predictions of energy demand and cooling system performance.

Abstract:In this study, a mathematical model of the dual suction compressor which can be applied to the household temperature and humidity independent control air conditioning system was established. The parameters of R410A were calculated with the help of REFPROP. The power consumptions of the dual suction compressor at different frequencies were calculated at different evaporation and condensing temperatures. Comparing with the experimental data, relative errors within % between the simulated and experimental values of compressor power consumption occurred under various conditions, suggesting that the accuracy of the established energy consumption model met the requirements of engineering application. With the established model, the influence of different evaporation and condensing temperatures on the compressor power consumption and energy efficiency were simulated. The results showed that when keeping the evaporation temperature and condensing temperature of the LT side as a constant, the compressor power consumption decreased by 3.2% with each 1°C increment of the average evaporation temperature of the HT side. On the other hand, when the HT side evaporation temperature and condensing temperature was maintained as a constant, increased by 10% and the compressor power consumption decreased by 1.7% with each 1°C increment of the average LT side evaporation temperature. The verified model can be applied to guide the optimization of evaporation and condensing temperatures in the future practical application of dual suction compressor in temperature and humidity independent control air conditioning system.

Abstract:Both conventional and advanced exergy analysis methods were adopted to compare parallel and series compression-ejection hybrid refrigeration system for a two-temperature R290 refrigerator. The calculation was performed through Matlab and CoolProp. The results over typical design conditions showed that the exergy efficiency of the series system is 5.17% higher than the parallel system, and the exergy destructions of the compressor (30.59% for parallel and 31.22% for series) and the ejector (19.36% for parallel and 22.65% for series) are the biggest of the total system. Results from advanced exergy analysis showed that the compressor possesses highest improvement priority as its avoidable exergy destruction rate is the biggest, 42.76% of the total for parallel system and 41.28% for series system. The endogenous avoidable exergy destruction rates of the compressor and the ejector are larger than their exogenous parts in both systems, indicating it is most important to improve their own efficiency. However, the condenser’s endogenous avoidable exergy destruction rates are smaller than their exogenous part, so it is more effective by improving other system components rather than itself. The influence of the interactions among the components on the system performance was also evaluated based on their mexogenous exergy destruction.

Abstract:Due to the growing demand for refrigerators and air conditioners in automobiles, there is a need for an innovative and efficient design to achieve both refrigeration and air conditioning. To address this, the present work has evaluated a two-evaporator vapor compression system to eliminate the requirement for separate refrigeration and air conditioning units. Theoretical energy and exergy performance assessment of the same is carried out along with the variation in the condenser and evaporators temperature. Various low GWP refrigerants such as R1234yf, HFO1336mzz(Z), R513A, and R450A are compared against high GWP R134a and R452A. The results reveal that maximum exergy efficiency and COP and lowest compressor power of 31.50%, 2.47, and 6.304 kW, respectively, are obtained with HFO1336mzz(Z). After HFO1336mzz(Z), R134a shows the highest exergy efficiency and COP of 30.56% and 2.41, respectively, and the lowest compressor power of 5.61kW. HFO1336mzz(Z) exhibits the optimum performance, whereas R452A shows the worst thermodynamic performance in the system. It is also found that the performance of R450, R513A, R450A, and R1234yf is approximately equivalent to each other. Moreover, component-wise exergy destruction analyses indicate that the efficiency of the compressor needs to be improved as the maximum destruction of 61.84–56.00% occurs in the compressor while the minimum exergy destruction of 0.42–0.54% occurs in the expansion valve. This study proposes the two-evaporator system for both refrigeration and air conditioning in automobiles. It is also found that R450A, R1234yf, R513A, and HFO1336mzz(Z) can be the potential alternative to R134a.

Abstract:Accurately forecasting energy consumption is beneficial and pivotal for effectively managing variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems. Changes in energy consumption provide an intuitive representation of the operating condition and the impact of possible faults. Energy consumption prediction is fundamental in energy conservation tasks such as fault diagnosis. Currently, many energy consumption prediction model have been applied for HVAC system widely. However black-box energy prediction models applied to VRF systems are still relatively few and crude. This study therefore proposed a hybrid energy consumption prediction method for VRF systems based on data partitioning and swarm intelligence algorithm. The model was based on back propagation neural network (BPNN), and utilized data partitioning techniques to identify the energy consumption patterns of the VRF system. For each pattern, a BPNN sub-model was trained using operating and energy consumption data of a VRF system. Then, swarm intelligence algorithm is adopted to determine the optimal architecture of each BPNN sub-model. The results demonstrate that the proposed hybrid models can achieve better prediction performance than single models like BP Neural Network. Root mean square error and mean absolute percentage error of the proposed predictive model is 202.49 and 1.95%, which has a 31.3% and 45.5% decrease compared to single BPNN model. At the same time, it is enlightening for other researchers to study the potential of data partitioning algorithm and swarm intelligence algorithm in the field of VRF system energy consumption prediction.

Abstract:A novel hybrid system coupled liquid dehumidification with absorption refrigeration driven by solar energy is proposed. Traditional and advanced exergy and exergoeconomic analyses of the system are conducted to ascertain the degree of irreversibility and potential improvement for each component. Based on the advanced exergy and exergoeconomic analyses, the effects of air humidity, segment temperature, and refrigeration temperature on the total exergy destruction and cost rates of the system are obtained. The total avoidable exergy destruction rate, avoidable exergy destruction cost rate, and avoidable investment cost rate of the system are selected as objective functions and optimized by using nondominated sort genetic algorithm-II. The results show that the total exergy destruction rate and the total exergy destruction cost rate reach 262.39 kW and 8.563 $/h, respectively. The generator and regenerator have higher cost rates of the irreversibility overall system, achieving the values 3.536 and 2.430 $/h, respectively. The absorber has the highest investment cost rate in the whole system. The endogenous parts of the exergy destruction and cost rates are much higher than the exogenous parts in the system. Multiobjective optimization results show that optimal values for the total avoidable exergy destruction rate and the exergy destruction cost rate are 50.99 kW and 1.60 $/h, which are 4.15 and 9.14% lower than those calculated by single-objective optimization, respectively. This study provides a potential way to utilize solar energy for dehumidification and refrigeration.

Abstract:Despite the rise in the prices of fossil fuels, the increase in their demand, and damaging the environment, a large part of the world's energy needs have been today met by fossil fuels. In this direction, interest in renewable energy sources has increased. Solar energy stands out among renewable energy sources because it is endless and clean. However, today, the use of solar energy is not used alone, but in combination with other thermal energy systems. In building applications, it is mostly used in heating, refrigeration, and HVAC systems, which have a high part in energy consumption. In this study, the solar energy and cooling system were not used separately as in previous studies but were used as a hybrid. The focus was on increasing the performance of both systems by operating them together. In this study, energy, exergy, thermoeconomic, and environmental analyses were applied to the PV/T-assisted vapor compression refrigeration system (PV/T-VCRS) at different storage temperatures (25 °C, 30 °C, and 35 °C). As a result, an 8.5 % lower surface temperature of the module in PV/T-VCRS 25 °C was measured compared to PV/T-VCRS 30 °C and 35 °C. In direct proportion to the module surface temperatures, 13 % better electrical efficiency was obtained in PV/T-VCRS 25 °C compared to 30 °C and 35 °C. The COP value increased by 15.46 % in PV/T-VCRS 25 °C compared to 30 °C and 35 °C. A 13 % improvement in exergy efficiency was observed in PV/T-VCRS 25 °C compared to 30 °C and 35 °C. The enviroeconomic parameter PV/T-VCRS is calculated as 15.17 ¢/h, 16.52 ¢/h, and 17.6 ¢/h for 25 °C, 30 °C and 35 °C. Another advantage of the system is that hot water is obtained at set temperatures. In PV/T-VCRS, 475 L, 300 L, and 210 L of hot water were obtained at 25 °C, 30 °C, and 35 °C, respectively. As a result, the performance of the PV/T-VCRS was good, with the added benefit of performing close to the performances when PV/T and VCRS were used separately.
Future refrigerants with low global warming potential for residential air conditioning system: a thermodynamic analysis and MCDM tool optimization

Abstract:Increasing CO2 emission due to the practicing of high global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant like R22 in split air conditioning (AC) units needs the best substitute to match with environment and safety protocols along with good energy efficiency. In this study, 14 alternative refrigerants have been chosen to replace R22 in a 1.5 TR capacity of split AC from the existing studies. The performance of each refrigerant has been analysed thermodynamically and compared their results with R22 by accounting for discharge temperature, power consumption, coefficient of performance (COP), total equivalent warming impact (TEWI) index, and life-time cost. Overall from this theoretical analysis, it was observed that the best refrigerant for each considered measure is not unique; for example, R290 was best in terms of refrigerant charge and discharge pressure, while R444B was chosen to be superior in terms of COP, TEWI, and life-time cost. Therefore, a multi-criteria decision-making methodology tool-based optimization has been carried out for selecting a single superior refrigerant for the future by considering thermal properties, COP, TEWI, and life-time cost. Results of the evaluation based on the distance from average solution envisage R290 and R1123 as superior and worst choices to replace R22.
