Abstract:Electrochemically activating peroxydisulfate (PDS) can eliminate organic pollution using electron as activator without the involvement of byproducts. Notwithstanding, the process suffered from long hydraulic retention time, and the activation regime remained unclear. Herein, using Pd/Al2O3 catalyst as particle electrode for initiating PDS oxidation in the cathodic cell can degrade various organic pollutants with varying the kinetic constants from 0.0256 min(-1) to 0.0645 min(-1), which were at least 5-fold higher than that in previous studies. The reactive oxygen species were determined to be SO4 center dot-/center dot OH. These radicals were readily formed from the single-electron reduction of PDS by electro-induced atomic hydrogen (indirect reduction mechanism), while direct two-electron transfer from electro-generated H-2 to PDS consumed its oxidation capacity without yielding radical due to the higher energy barrier. Revealing the mechanism of electrochemically unleashing the oxidative power of PDS into SO4 center dot- can rationalize the design of scalable electrode for PDS-based water purification.

Abstract:B-SIT has an advantage that its on-resistance is extremely low compared to those of other power semiconductor switching devices. Accordingly, we can suppress its conduction losses during large current operation. Then, high conversion efficiency is expected when B-SITs are utilized as the switching devices of high frequency inverters. Here, we adopt newly developed B-SITs which have the maximum ratings 150 V/50 A and prepare a breadboard of a conventional single-ended push-pull (SEPP) high frequency inverter, which has a simplified circuit constitution and relatively wide range applications. This paper describes the characteristics of B-SIT on the basis of the experimental results of the breadboard. Its operational frequency is fixed at 50 kHz with PWM control technique for output power regulation. Its load is induction fluid heating systems for super-heated-steam production

Abstract:We present a novel electrochemical method for a rapid analytical detection of Staphylococcus aureus in culture and spiked milk samples through hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) consumption on a screenprinted gold electrode (SPGE) modified with cysteine and peroxidase from Guinea grass leaves (GGP). This peroxidase (POD) had a specific activity of 470 U mg-1 and it was immobilized on an SPGE surface previously modified with cysteine. Cyclic voltammograms of gold electrodes modified with peroxidase and cysteine in the presence of potassium ferrocyanide as a redox probe demonstrated an increase of approximately 5% in the current compared to the bare gold electrode. The SPGE modified electrode exhibited a good electrocatalytic response towards H2O2 reduction. We added a constant H2O2 concentration of 1x10-3 M to the culture medium and measured the decrease in the H2O2 current at -780 mV consumed by catalase from S. aureus. Our modified electrode proved to sense S. aureus in a range concentration between 3x102 and 3x108 CFU/mL-1 with a detection limit of 102 CFU/mL-1, detection time of about ~20 min, and a sensitivity of 0.020 mA CFU-1.
Rapid spectrophotometric determination of peroxydisulfate in water via oxidative coloration of 2,2′azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline)-6-sulfonate (ABTS) using ferrous ion as catalyst

Abstract:In this study, a rapid, sensitive and reliable spectrophotometric method for peroxydisulfate (PDS) determination in water was established. The proposed spectrophotometric method was based on the oxidation of 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) (ABTS) to form stable and green-colored ABTS radical (ABTS • + ) by ferrous ion (Fe(II))-catalyzed PDS. The formed ABTS • + performed well linear relationship with PDS concentration (R 2 > 0.999) in the range of 0–60 μM at four wavelengths of 415, 650, 732, and 820 nm under optimized conditions. The proposed Fe(II)-ABTS spectrophotometric method was highly sensitive with the absorptivity of 3.595 × 10 4 M −1 cm −1 , 1.530 × 10 4 M −1 cm −1 , 1.945 × 10 4 M −1 cm −1 and 1.768 × 10 4 M −1 cm −1 at four detection peaks of 415, 650, 732 and 820 nm, respectively. Additionally, the proposed Fe(II)-ABTS spectrophotometric method possessed well anti-interference capacity to common natural water constituents and was reliable to determine PDS concentration in water. What's more, the proposed Fe(II)-ABTS spectrophotometric method was successfully applied in monitoring the change of PDS concentration during the degradation of diclofenac in heat-activated PDS process. In a word, the proposed Fe(II)-ABTS spectrophotometric method could be employed as a promising approach for the rapid and accurate measurement of PDS in water, and this study provided a new perspective for the measurement of PDS by the visible spectrophotometry.

Abstract:This study presents an electrolysis system utilizing a novel self-circulation process of sulfate (SO42−) and persulfate (S2O82−) ions based on a boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode and an activated carbon fiber (ACF) cathode, which is designed to enable electrochemical remediation of environmental contaminants with reduced use of chemical reagents and minimized residues. The production of S2O82− and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on the BDD anode and ACF cathode, respectively, is identified as the source of active radicals for the contaminant degradation. The initiator, sulfate, is identified by comparing the degradation efficiency in NaSO4 and NaNO3 electrolytes. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy confirmed that the SO4−· and ·OH generated on the ACF cathode are the main reactive radicals. A comparison of the degradation efficiency and the generated S2O82−/H2O2 of the divided/undivided electrolysis system is used to demonstrate the superiority of the synergistic effect between the BDD anode and ACF cathode. This work provides evidence of the effectiveness of the philosophy of "catalysis in lieu of supplementary chemical agents" and sheds light on the mechanism of the generation and transmission of reactive species in the BDD and ACF electrolysis system, thereby offering new perspectives for the design and optimization of electrolysis systems.

Determination of persulfate based on the principle of the oxidation of chloride ion

Abstract:Persulfate (PS) is a widely used oxidant for the chemical oxidation of organic pollutants. The accurate measurement of PS concentration is crucial for the practical application process. The iodometry is the most recommended method for PS determination, and its principle is based on the redox reaction between S2O82- and iodide ions. However, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), an important intermediate product in the process of PS use, often leads to abnormally high determination concentrations of PS. Given this, a novel method was developed for the determination of PS based on the principle of the oxidation of chloride ion (Cl-). The concentration of PS is calculated according to the consumption of Cl- concentration, which is not disturbed by H2O2. The optimized test conditions were explored as: C(H+) = 2 mol/L, T = 80℃, C(Cl-):C(PS) = 4:1 and t = 30 min. Under the optimized conditions, the limit of detection and the limit of quantification of PS concentration determined by this method were 0.26 and 0.85 g/L, respectively. And the linear range of the PS determination was 1-100 g/L with an error of 0.53%-12.06%. The spike recovery rate for determining PS concentration in the actual wastewater ranged from 94.07%-109.52%. Interfering factors such as H2O2, Fe3+, MnO2 and natural organic matter had almost no effect on the results. This method could not only accurately determine the concentration of PS in industrial wastewater, but also determine the purity of PS industrial products.

Abstract:This research presents a novel electrochemical approach for the selective measurement of hydrogen peroxide and organic hydroperoxides, which is pivotal in many fields. The study details the development of an advanced sensor using a one-pot, one-step synthesis to embed platinum nanoparticles within a 3D-polymeric matrix of poly (brilliant green) on screen-printed carbon electrodes. The modified surfaces were characterized using scanning and transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results obtained by amperometry showed that, at 0.1 V, only H2O2 produced an electrochemical signal, while, at higher potential (0.5 V), all the hydroperoxides tested exhibited an electrochemical signal. Sensitivities obtained for H2O2 by flow injection analysis were 431 ± 3 and 465 ± 4 μC mM-1 at 0.1 and 0.5 V, respectively, with detection limits (S/N = 3) 116 and 30 nM, respectively. For organic hydroperoxides, sensitivities ranged from 22.3 to 32.6 μC mM-1 at 0.5 V, and limits of detection from 1.15 to 5.95 μM. Chemometric analysis indicated the sensor can satisfactorily measure H2O2 in the presence of the organic hydroperoxides herein analysed. The proposed sensor showed excellent properties in terms of repeatability, reproducibility and stability, with minimal interference. The reliability of the sensor was verified by measuring hydroperoxides spiked in aqueous extracts from real air quality monitoring filters. These features highlight the suitability of the sensor for hydroperoxide measurement and underscore its reliability as a practical tool for real-world applications.

Abstract:The electrosynthesis and characterization of polypyrrole(PPy)/stainless steel electrodes decorated with gold nanoparticles and the performance of the composite electrode for sensing applications is described. PPy films were grown in potassium perchlorate and sodium salicylate solutions under comparable electropolymerization conditions. Polymer films prepared in the presence of perchlorate ions exhibited worm-like structures, whereas columnar structures were obtained in salicylate-containing solutions. Voltammetric response of PPy films prepared in salicylate solutions was more reversible. PPy films were decorated with gold nanoparticles obtained by a double step potentiostatic electrodeposition routine that allowed fine control of deposit characteristics. Analysis of deposits was performed by means of SEM and confocal Raman spectroscopy. The electrocatalytic activity of the Au/PPy electrodes was assessed for the electro-oxidation of hydrazine and hydroxylamine. Results showed a successful optimization of the route of synthesis that rendered nanocomposite electrode materials with promising applications in electrochemical sensing.

Prussian Blue Modified Submicron Structured Gold Electrodes for Amperometric Hydrogen Peroxide Sensing

Abstract:In this work, we present a simple and effective approach for fabricating sub-micron structured gold (SM-Au) electrodes by chemically etching the magnetron co-sputtered gold film in KI solution for certain time. Such electrodes with a large surface area to volume ratio were used as the matrix for electrochemical deposition of Prussian blue (PB) to develop an electrochemical hydrogen peroxide sensor. Experimental characterization using scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscope shows that the thickness of PB layer on SM-Au electrode is around 140nm, and is composited with cubic PB nanocrystals. The electrochemical performance of the designed sensor, studied using cyclic voltammograms and chronoamperometry methods, suggests that the sensor based on SM-Au/PB electrode presents the direct electron transfer of PB particle towards SM-Au film, and exhibits fast response, wide linearity, low detection limit and high stability. Under the optimized conditions, the sensitivity of the developed sensor for the detection of H2O2 reaches the value of 512mAcm(-2)M(-1) with a linear range from 1M to 4.5mM.
Suppressing Sulfite Dimerization at a Polarized Gold Electrode/Water Solution Interface for High-Quality Gold Electrodeposition

Abstract:Solid/liquid interfacial structure occupies great importance in chemistry, biology, and materials. In this paper, by combining EC-SERS study and DFT calculation, we reveal the adsorption and dimerization of sulfite (SO32–) at a gold electrode/water solution interface, and establish an adsorption displacement strategy to suppress the dimerization of sulfite. At the gold electrode/sodium sulfite solution interface, at least two layers of SO32– anions are adsorbed on the electrode surface. As the applied potential shifts negatively, the adsorption strength of the first SO32– layer is weakened gradually and then is dimerized with the second orientated SO32– layer to form S2O52–, and S2O52– is further reduced to S2O32–. After hydroxyethylene disphosphonic acid (HEDP) is introduced to the gold electrode/sodium sulfite solution interface, the second oriented SO32– layer is replaced by a HEDP coadsorption layer. This results in the first layer of SO32– being desorbed directly without any structural transformation or chemical reaction as the potential shifts negatively. The suppression of sulfite dimerization by HEDP is more clear at the gold electrode/gold sulfite solution interface owing to the electroreduction of gold ions. Abstract:Recently, peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes have exhibited broad application prospects in the environment field. Accordingly, a simple, rapid, and ultrasensitive method is highly desired for the specific recognition and accurate quantification of PMS in various aqueous solutions. In this work, SO4 center dot--induced aromatic hydroxylation was explored, and based on that, for the first time, a novel fluorescence method was developed for the PMS determination using Co2+ as a PMS activator and benzoic acid (BA) as a chemical probe. Through a suite of spectral, chromatographic, and mass spectrometric analyses, SO4 center dot- was proven to be the dominant radical species, and salicylic acid was identified as the fluorescent molecule. As a result, a whole radical chain reaction mechanism for the generation of salicylic acid in the BA/PMS/Co2+ system was proposed. This fluorescence method possessed a rapid reaction equilibrium (<1 min), an ultrahigh sensitivity (detection limit = 10 nM; quantification limit = 33 nM), an excellent specificity, and a wide detection range (0-100 mu M). Moreover, it performed well in the presence of possible interfering substances, including two other peroxides (i.e., peroxydisulfate and hydrogen peroxide), some common ions, and organics. The detection results for real water samples further validated the practical utility of the developed fluorescence method. This work provides a new method for the specific recognition and sensitive determination of PMS in complex aqueous solutions.
Recovering precious metals from spent catalysts by peroxydisulfate-based advanced oxidation process

Abstract:Abstract The recovery of precious metals from discarded wastes is an attractive potential remedy for their supply disruption risk. Nevertheless, the use of conventional solvents in metallurgical processes has significant negative environmental effects. Here, we report peroxydisulfate (PDS)-based advanced oxidation process (AOPs) to develop a novel and efficient leaching process for recovering precious metals from spent catalysts. The PDS/NaCl photochemical system could fully dissolve palladium (Pd) and gold (Au) in 300 min. By introducing Fe(II), the PDS/FeCl2·4H2O solution functioned as Fenton-like system, which enhanced the leaching efficiency and required no xenon (Xe) lamp light irradiation. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and 18O isotope tracing experiments revealed the reactive oxidation species of SO4·-, ·OH and Fe(IV)=O were responsible for the oxidative dissolution of precious metals. Density functional theory calculations showed that the total energy barrier for the three species were 7.62, 18.46 and 17.52 kcal mol-1, respectively. Solvent leaching and one-step electrodeposition recovered high-purity precious metals and maintained solvent dissolution and electrochemical stability after 5 cycles. Strong acids, poisonous cyanide, volatile organic solvents, light irradiation, and photocatalysts were not used during recovery. This work will enable a green and sustainable precious metal recovery approach and encourage AOPs technology for secondary resource recycling.
Electrochemical SERS for in Situ Monitoring the Redox States of PEDOT and Its Potential Application in Oxidant Detection.

Abstract:In response to recent developments for applying conducting polymers on various biomedical applications, the development of characterization techniques for evaluating the states of conducting polymers in liquids is beneficial to the applications of these materials. In this study, we propose a platform using electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman scattering (EC-SERS) technology, which allows a direct measurement of the redox states of conducing polymers in liquids. A thiophene-based conducting polymer, hydroxymethyl poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) or poly(EDOT-OH), was used to demonstrate this concept. Poly(EDOT-OH) films were coated on Au nanoparticle-coated ITO glass as SERS-active substrates. Taking the advantage of Raman enhancement, we can in situ and clearly monitor the redox behavior of poly(EDOT-OH) in aqueous solutions. The Raman peak intensity decreases as the poly(EDOT-OH) film is oxidized. Furthermore, we demonstrated our idea to utilize this phenomenon as the sensing mechanism for oxidant detection. The Raman intensity of conducting polymers reduces faster when oxidants exist, and we obtain a quantitative analysis for the detection of oxidants. Moreover, the oxidized poly(EDOT-OH) films can be reused for detection of oxidants simply by applying a reduction potential to activate the poly(EDOT-OH) films. The film stability was also confirmed, and the detection of two other oxidants, namely ammonium persulfate and iron chloride, were also demonstrated. The results show different SERS spectra of poly(EDOT-OH) films oxidized by using different oxidants. Besides, the oxidized films can be easily recovered simply by applying a cathodic potential, which allows repeating usage and makes it possible for continuous monitoring applications. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to apply PEDOT's Raman feature for detection purposes.

Abstract:In recent years, sulfur-doped modified iron-based catalysts have been widely used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) or peroxydisulfate (PDS) for the contamination elimination, however, the manufacturing complicated and costly limit further industrial application. Therefore, a new water purification technology using pyrite activation PMS with electro-assisted is developed, and the parameters are adjusted and underlying mechanism is clarified. It has been found PMS is effectively activated by FeS2, achieving ~90% tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) removal. Sulfide is the main electron donor for activation PMS and mediates the regeneration of Fe(II) on the pyrite surface, and different sulfur conversion intermediates such as short-chain polysulfides Sn2−, elemental sulfur S0, and sulfate form from the oxidation of sulfides (S22−). Moreover, the iron ions in-situ generation from pyrite activation PMS involve in TCH degradation, and concurrently is greatly affected by current, PMS and pH. The production of hydroxyl radicals (OH) and sulfate radicals (SO4−) by pyrite-activated PMS is confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance (ESR) and quenching tests. Finally, the mechanism is proved electro-oxidation, non-radical-oxidation and radical-oxidation synergistically eliminate TCH in EC/PMS/pyrite system. Overall, this study provides a new horizons for heterogeneous activation PMS and unveils the advantages and potential applications of sulfur-containing iron-based activators.

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a widely occurring substance in rivers that can strongly complex with heavy metal ions (HMIs), severely interfering with the electrochemical signal of anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) and reducing the detection accuracy of HMIs in water. In this study, we investigated a novel advanced oxidation process (AOP) that involves the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) using low-pressure ultraviolet (LPUV) radiation and CoFe2O4 photocatalysis. This novel AOP was used for the first time as an effective pretreatment method to break or weaken the complexation between HMIs and DOM, thereby restoring the electrochemical signals of HMIs. The key parameters, including the PMS concentration, CoFe2O4 concentration, and photolysis time, were optimized to be 6 mg/L, 12 mg/L, and 30 s for eliminating DOM interference during the electrochemical analysis of HMIs via LPUV/CoFe2O4-based photolysis. Investigations of the microstructure, surface morphology, specific surface area, and pore volume of CoFe2O4 were conducted to reveal the exceptional signal recovery capability of LPUV/CoFe2O4/PMS-based photolysis in mitigating interference from DOM during HMIs analysis. The PMS activation mechanism, which is critical to the signal recovery process, was elucidated by analyzing the reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the surface elemental composition of CoFe2O4. Additionally, the degradation and transformation behavior of humus-HMIs complexes were analyzed to study the mechanism of ASV signal recovery further. Notably, the detection results of HMIs in actual water samples obtained using the proposed pretreatment method were compared with those obtained from ICP-MS, yielding an RMSE less than 0.04 μg/L, which indicated the satisfactory performance of the proposed pretreatment method for the ASV detection of HMIs in complex actual samples.
Electro activation of persulfate using iron sheet as low-cost electrode: the role of the operating conditions

Abstract:This work assesses the role of the operational conditions upon the electro-activation of persulfate (PS) using sacrificed iron electrode as a continuous low-cost Fe2+ source. An aqueous phenol solution (100 mg L−1) was selected as model effluent. The studied variables include current density (1–10 mA cm−2), persulfate concentration (0.7–2.85 g L−1), temperature (30–90°C) and the solution conductivity (2.7–20.7 mS cm−1) using Na2SO4 and NaCl as supporting electrolyte. A mineralization degree of around 80% with Na2SO4 and 92% in presence of NaCl was achieved at 30°C using 2.15 g L−1 PS at the lowest current density tested (1 mA cm−2). Besides PS concentration, temperature was the main variable affecting the process. In the range of 30–70°C, it showed a positive effect, achieving TOC conversion above 95% (using Na2SO4 under the previous conditions) along with a significant increase in iron sludge, which adversely affects the economy of the process. A lumped and simplified kinetic model based on persulfate consumption and TOC mineralization is suggested. The activation energy obtained for the TOC decay was 29 kJ mol−1. An estimated operating cost of US$ 3.00 per m3 was obtained, demonstrating the economic feasibility of this process.

Abstract:Converting SO2 into H2S is of great importance in recovering sulfur from SO2 streams, and even across the sulfur chemistry. However, H2S will comproportionate with SO2, resulting in undesired sulfur deposition to impede SO2 reduction reaction. Herein, a new concept of electrolysis paradigm to produce H2S from SO2 was introduced, wherein a gas-permeable catalyst membrane (Au/PTFE) was designed to in situ synthesis and separate H2S from the electrolyte, avoiding sulfur deposition behavior. This catalyst membrane electrolysis demonstrates a good performance with H2S Faraday efficiency of 99.6 % and separation efficiency of 99.1 %, with superior operational stability (exhibiting 38-hours continuous electrolysis without sulfur deposition). Computational studies and spectroscopic results reveal that S0 is the key intermediate for H2S production from SO2. The in situ separation of H2S not only prevents the S0 formation but also helps to self-clean the catalyst surface.

Abstract:The electro-activation of persulfate (PS) by graphite felt (GF) electrode is a novel advanced oxidation process applied for the degradation of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). Both GF anode and cathode can electro-activate PS to degrade CECs, including atrazine (ATZ), bisphenol S, ethinylestradiol, and ibuprofen. The study examines the removal performance of ATZ in sulfate, nitrate, and perchlorate electrolyte. The degradation of ATZ followed the order of sulfate (36.3 L (Ah)(-1)) > perchlorate (22.2 L (Ah)(-1)) > nitrate (5.8 L (Ah)(-1)) in GF anode/PS system, while electrolytes had little influence on the degradation of ATZ (15.8-21.3 L (Ah)(-1)) in GF cathode/PS system. The mechanisms of PS electro-activation by GF anode and GF cathode were compared and investigated for the first time, through kinetic experiments, radical identification, and products analysis. Quenching experiments demonstrated that O-2(center dot-) and O-1(2) were generated in GF cathode/PS and GF anode/PS systems respectively, besides HO center dot and SO4 center dot-. Degradation pathways of ATZ in these two systems showed slight difference, and a total of eight transformation products of ATZ were identified. Acute toxicity of the treated ATZ solution decreased at the beginning and then increased in both systems at electric charge of 0.11 Ah L-1. Furthermore, both GF electrodes/PS systems exhibited satisfactory performance for actual effluent from wastewater treatment plants in the presence of 30 mM perchlorate (with ATZ removal of 78% at electric charge of 0.11 Ah L-1), leaving a potential possibility for its practical application.
Nonradical Oxidation of Pollutants with Single-Atom-Fe(III)-Activated Persulfate: Fe(V) Being the Possible Intermediate Oxidant

Abstract:When applied for the remediation of polluted water/soil, peroxydisulfate (PDS) usually needs to be effectively activated to generate sulfate radical as the working oxidant. However, a significant part of the oxidation capacity of PDS is lost in this way because sulfate radical unselectively reacts with most of the substances in water/soil. PDS activation without generating radicals is preferred to maximize its oxidation capacity for targeted pollutants. Here, we report that single-atom Fe(III)- and nitrogen-doped carbon (Fe–N–C) can efficiently activate PDS to selectively remove some organic pollutants following an unreported nonradical pathway. The single-atom Fe(III) coordinated with pyridinic N atoms was confirmed to be the active site for the catalytic decomposition of PDS. However, the PDS decomposition did not produce radicals or reactive oxygen species. It is very likely that the coordinated Fe(III) is readily converted to Fe(V) through two-electron abstraction by PDS, and Fe(V) is responsible for the selective degradation of organic pollutants. The PDS/Fe–N–C-coupled process utilizes more oxidation capacity of PDS than both radical oxidation and other reported nonradical oxidation like PDS/CuO under the same experimental conditions.
