Abstract:Reproducible aerosol generation in combination with stable aerosol properties are essential prerequisites for compliant performance of acute or repeated inhalation toxicity tests of particulate materials according to OECD TG 403, 436, 412 or 413. A frequent problem of powder aerosol generation is the formation of coarse agglomerates with low shear resistance, which are beyond the tolerable size range but not detected by the prescribed aerodynamic measurement techniques by cascade impactor as the measurement conditions cause a disintegration into smaller fragments. But such agglomerates are observed during the transport to the inhalation chambers. These effects particularly apply to high mass concentrations and low-density powders, i.e., pyrogenic oxides. This study describes the transport influence in the airflow on the change of powder aerosols and on their respirability. A simplified short tube set-up was developed for the aerosol transport pre-tests, which allows the determination of the optimal aerosol formation conditions for the inhalation tests. The particles were measured with low shear using laser diffraction measurement or optical particle counters. The calculation of the aerodynamic particle sizes prescribed in the guidelines requires knowledge of the effective particle density of the porous aerosol particles. A practicable method for determining these is presented and described. In the outlook, first low concentration measurements show that clear agglomeration effects can also occur at particle concentrations around 20 mg/m3.

Abstract:Abstract Air pollution by fine particles represents a severe environmental health-risk. The particle’s content of toxic compounds, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), elemental carbon/soot or redox-active transition metals (e.g. Fe), is highly relevant for their toxicity. The particulate matter (PM) composition can be determined by chemical analysis of PM-loaded filter samples but no information on the mixing state of toxicants, i.e. the distribution of toxicants within the particle ensemble, is obtainable by this approach. The mixing state, however, is a crucial parameter to assess health effects as the toxicants may either be equally distributed over many particles (internally mixed) or could be highly concentrated within a small particle sub-population (externally mixed). In the latter case, the few particles with a very high concentration of toxicants can induce stronger cellular effects at the lung-deposition site. A new approach is based on single particle mass spectrometry (SPMS) but introduces a novel, tailored laser ionisation process. Aerosol particles are on-line sampled from the air and size-characterized by laser velocimetry. The organic coating of individual particles is desorbed by intense IR-laser pulses and subsequently the relevant toxicants (transition metals, PAH and soot) are ionized and MS-detected particle-by-particle, using a novel combined UV-laser ionization scheme (Schade et al. Anal., Chem. 2019; Passig et al. ACP 2022). The novel SPMS system offers the characterisation of the most relevant PM-toxicants (soot, metals, PAH) on a sized-resolved, single particle-basis and gives insight into their mixing state. First SPMS-ambient air monitoring results for PAH or metals show that, depending on conditions, the toxicants indeed either are concentrated on a very small fraction of the particle-ensemble or are rather uniformly distributed over all particles. Future application concepts of the new SPMS-technology in air monitoring and environmental health research are discussed.

Aerosol exposure at air-liquid-interface (AE-ALI) in vitro toxicity system characterisation: Particle deposition and the importance of air control responses

Abstract:Experimental systems allowing aerosol exposure (AE) of cell cultures at the air-liquid-interface (ALI) are increasingly being used to assess the toxicity of inhaled contaminants as they are more biomimetic than standard methods using submerged cultures, however, they require detailed characterisation before use. An AE-ALI system combining aerosol generation with a CULTEX® exposure chamber was characterised with respect to particle deposition and the cellular effects of filtered air (typical control) exposures. The effect of system parameters (electrostatic precipitator voltage, air flowrate to cells and insert size) on deposition efficiency and spatial distribution were investigated using ICP-MS and laser ablation ICP-MS, for an aerosol of CeO2 nanoparticles. Deposition varied with conditions, but appropriate choice of operating parameters produced broadly uniform deposition at suitable levels. The impact of air exposure duration on alveolar cells (A549) and primary small airway epithelial cells (SAECs) was explored with respect to LDH release and expression of selected genes. Results indicated that air exposures could have a significant impact on cells (e.g., cytotoxicity and expression of genes, including CXCL1, HMOX1, and SPP1) at relatively short durations (from 10 mins) and that SAECs were more sensitive. These findings indicate that detailed system characterisation is essential to ensure meaningful results.

Abstract:The chemical composition of aerosol particles is crucial to understanding their formation and evolution in the atmosphere. However, very limited information is available for the chemical composition of ultrafine particles, particularly for nanoclusters and newly formed particles, due to the lack of valid analytical methods. This work reviews the online measurement techniques for characterizing the chemical composition of atmospheric clusters and sub-20 nm particles. The commonly used instrumentations are divided into two categories: direct techniques based on mass spectrometry and indirect measurement techniques mainly relying on the physical properties (e.g., hygroscopicity and volatility). The advantages of these techniques are compared and their limitations in the lab and field application are summarized. The combination of direct and indirect techniques is discussed, and this may provide more comprehensive understanding of chemical information of atmospheric clusters and particles. We propose that the newly developing instrumentations are needed to improve the collection efficiency for direct techniques, or the chemical resolution for indirect techniques. Future development should focus on obtaining simultaneous measurements of particle physical and chemical properties, which can be helpful in improving the accuracy of modeling and the understanding of particle formation and evolution.

Abstract:Single particle analysis is essential for a better understanding of the particle transformation process and to predict its environmental impact. In this study, we developed an aerosol optical tweezer (AOT) Raman spectroscopy system to investigate the phase state and morphology of suspended aerosol droplets in real time. The system comprises four modules: optical trapping, reaction, illumination and imaging, and detection. The optical trapping module utilizes a 532 nm laser and a 100 × oil immersion objective to stably trap aerosol droplets within 30 s. The reaction module allows us to adjust relative humidity (RH) and introduce reaction gases into the droplet levitation chamber, facilitating experiments to study liquid–liquid phase transitions. The illumination and imaging module employs a high-speed camera to monitor the trapped droplets, while the detector module records Raman scattering light. We trapped sodium chloride (NaCl) and 3-methyl glutaric acid (3-MGA) mixed droplets to examine RH-dependent morphology changes. Liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) occurred when RH was decreased. Additionally, we introduced ozone and limonene/pinene to generate secondary organic aerosol (SOA) particles in situ, which collided with the trapped droplet and dissolved in it. To determine the trapped droplet's characteristics, we utilized an open-source program based on Mie theory to retrieve diameter and refractive index from the observed whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in Raman spectra. It is found that mixed droplets formed core–shell morphology when RH was decreased, and the RH dependence of the droplets' phase transitions generated by different SOA precursors varied. Our AOT system serves as an essential experimental platform for in situ assessment of morphology and phase state during dynamic atmospheric processes.

Abstract:Abstract Particulate matter (PM) air pollution is a central concern for public health. Current legislation relies on a mass concentration basis, despite broad acceptance that mass alone is insufficient to capture the complexity and toxicity of airborne PM, calling for additional and more comprehensive measurement techniques. We study to what extent scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) can be applied for physicochemical characterization of complex aerosols, and investigate its potential for separating particle properties on a single particle basis, even for nanosized particles. SEM/EDS analysis is performed on impactor samples of laboratory generated aerosols, consisting of either NaCl, Halloysite fibers, soot-like Printex90 agglomerates, or their combination. The analysis is automated and performed as EDS maps, covering a statistically relevant number of particles, with analysis times of approximately one hour/sample. Derived size distributions are compared to scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) and electric low-pressure impactor (ELPI) results. A method is presented to estimate airborne number concentrations and size distributions directly from SEM results, within a factor 10 of SMPS and ELPI outcomes. A classification scheme is developed based on elemental composition, providing class-specific information with individual particle statistics on shape, size, and mixing state. This can identify primary particles for source apportionment and enables easy distinction between fibrous and dense particle classes, e.g. for targeted risk assessments. Overall, the SEM/EDS analysis provides a more detailed physicochemical characterization of PM than online measurements, e.g. SMPS and ELPI. The method has the potential to improve assessments of PM exposure and risk, and facilitates source identification, even without prior knowledge at sampling.

Abstract:To allow inhalation exposure studies, with control of particulate matter (PM) concentration/dose, a low-cost aerosol generator with real-time continual monitoring was developed and tested. This device can be used for comparing controlled laboratory experiments with resuspension of dry ambient PM or dry powders/particles to model atmospheric PM concentrations decoupling the PM sampling and the exposure. Dry powder disposed in a reservoir was resuspended using a generator that promoted the control of flow rates of clean air and containing-PM air for injection in a whole-body exposure chamber continuously monitored by a PM monitor allowing real-time control of PM concentration/dose. To quantify its ability to produce exposure conditions, the airflow dynamics within the exposure chamber with computational fluid dynamics was simulated. A study of PM size distribution and chemical composition was undertaken to compare the ambient and resuspended PM. Airflow circulation patterns show that no areas of stagnation were present; the exposure chamber allows enough dispersion and mixing for the exposure of the mice. While the aerosol generator produces more fine particles, which are a major health concern than coarse particles, it can adequately reproduce the atmosphere with target concentrations. The resuspension in aerosol generator does not cause significative variations in mass ratios of the chemical species that are similar in the ambient and resuspended PM. Overall, this low-cost exposure system can be used in different laboratories, making inhalation exposure techniques more accessible in order to replace more invasive/artificial exposure such as instillation techniques.

Abstract:Respiratory particles produced by breathing, coughing, and speaking or generated during medical procedures serve as important routes for disease transmission. Characterizing the number of particles generated as well as their size distribution is fundamental for guiding policy on infection control. However, sampling such particles carries inherent challenges. Respiratory particles are polydisperse in size, temporally and spatially variable, and emitted in very low concentrations, usually lower than the preexisting aerosol concentration in indoor environments. In addition, they are typically emitted in a highly dynamic, warm and humid jet, leading to further rapid processes, such as dispersion and evaporation. Here, we discuss important considerations for sampling respiratory aerosol, focusing on sampling particles <20 μm in diameter. Instruments capable of counting single-particles within this size range are commercially available. We provide recommendations for experimental protocols and demonstrate the limitations behind such approaches. We highlight the importance of a measurement space with as low a background aerosol concentration as possible, and of sampling for as long as possible to enable accurate quantitation of the size distribution of an aerosol plume. This is particularly important for the larger particles (>5 μm diameter) that are so low in concentration that they may require hours of sampling time to be accurately quantified. We explore the relationship between the flow rates of the exhalation and the sampling instrument and the consequent quantification of particle flux. We also discuss the transport and evaporation dynamics of liquid particles within respiratory jets, and their impacts on conducting aerosol sampling studies.

Abstract:The physical and chemical properties of atmospheric aerosols profoundly impact the climate and human health. With diameters from sub-nanometer to tens of microns, a multitude of different experimental techniques suited to specific size ranges must be employed to characterize them. While mass spectrometry can be performed on particles of any size by destroying them and characterizing their molecular and atomic compositions, the masses of atmospheric nanoparticles with sizes below 10 nm can be measured with enough precision to observe discrete changes of their chemical composition while they remain intact. This enables direct study of their structure and reactivity in well-controlled laboratory experiments, complementing ambient field measurements. Here, we review the application of mass spectrometry and unique experiments based on mass spectrometers to measure the composition, stability, structure, and formation mechanisms of aerosol particles. We discuss the instrumentation employed in these experiments, including ion mobility separation, ion trap reactivity, and laser spectroscopy, that are often combined with mass spectrometry, and highlight illustrative examples of these techniques to prototypical atmospheric nanoparticles. We also highlight emerging mass spectrometry techniques that could extend these studies to larger nanoparticles and enable new insights into current unsolved problems involving atmospheric nanoparticles.

Abstract:This study introduces an innovative real-time instrumentation system that integrates Raman spectroscopy and Spark Emission Spectroscopy (SES) for the quantitative analysis of molecular structures and metal components in airborne particles. The study employs a nozzle-impact-based aerosol micro concentrator to enrich airborne particles for analysis. Experimental evaluations were conducted using laboratory-configured aerosols containing Cr 2 O 3 , Ni 2 O 3 , ZrO 2 , CuO mixed with SiO 2 , substances of significant concern in occupational health, notably in mining, metallurgy, and chemical industries. Results show a high linear correlation, with an R 2 value exceeding 0.937, between spectral peaks and analyte mass. The concentration limit of detection (LOD) for SiO 2 , Zr, Cu, Cr, and Ni during a 10 min sampling period, with a flow rate of 2 L/min, were found to be 14.0, 64.6, 80.1, 13.8, and 5.5 μg/m 3 , allowing for precise quantification of the aerosol components. The plasma density and temperature were characterized for various samples with different deposition masses. The findings suggest that the developed system has the potential to provide real-time and accurate measurements of hazardous aerosol components, making it a useful tool for occupational health and environmental monitoring. Abstract:High concentrations of low-density particles may cause effects in acute inhalation toxicity studies which can be easily underestimated or misinterpreted following strictly the OECD TG 436, i.e., limited parameters as mortality and gross lesions will be evaluated only. Seven particle types (synthetic amorphous silica (SAS) HMDZ-SAS, silica gel, pyrogenic SAS, and precipitated SAS, calcium carbonate, aluminum oxide pyrogenic alumina, organic red pigment) were chosen at the highest technically feasible concentration of approximately 500 mg/m 3 for acute inhalation studies with an expanded endpoint setup. Therefore additional parameters and a thorough histopathological evaluation of an extensive set of organs, including the respiratory tract emphasizing the nasal cavities were added. Six Crl:WI rats per study were exposed for four hours from which three animals were sacrificed after 24 hours and three animals after 14 days. HMDZ-SAS caused early death in all animals due to blockage of the nasal passages caused by its hydrophobicity. For all other Si-containing compounds, histology revealed minor inflammatory and reactive lesions in lungs after 24 hours that were still present after 14 days, except in silica gel-treated animals. After 14 days, for pyrogenic SAS, precipitated SAS, and pyrogenic alumina, granulomas formed in the BALT and lung-associated lymph nodes. In contrast, the calcium carbonate induced almost no findings, and the red pigment (also tested for the additional dose of 1000 mg/m 3 ) stuck partially to the nasal mucosa without causing pathological damage and partly entered the lungs without showing any adverse effects. The results of the present study highlight the advantage of improving the rather simple study design of acute inhalation studies by implementing an extended study design.

Abstract:Abstract Incidental ultrafine particles (UFPs) constitute a key pollutant in industrial workplaces. However, characterizing their chemical properties for exposure and toxicity assessments still remains a challenge. In this work, the performance of an aerosol concentrator (Versatile Aerosol Concentration Enrichment System, VACES) was assessed to simultaneously sample UFPs on filter substrates (for chemical analysis) and as liquid suspensions (for toxicity assessment), in a high UFP concentration scenario. An industrial case study was selected where metal-containing UFPs were emitted during thermal spraying of ceramic coatings. Results evidenced the comparability of the VACES system with online monitors in terms of UFP particle mass (for concentrations up to 95 μg UFP/m3) and between filters and liquid suspensions, in terms of particle composition (for concentrations up to 1000 μg/m3). This supports the applicability of this tool for UFP collection in view of chemical and toxicological characterization for incidental UFPs. In the industrial setting evaluated, results showed that the spraying temperature was a driver of fractionation of metals between UF (<0.2 μm) and fine (0.2–2.5 μm) particles. Potentially health hazardous metals (Ni, Cr) were enriched in UFPs and depleted in the fine particle fraction. Metals vaporized at high temperatures and concentrated in the UF fraction through nucleation processes. Results evidenced the need to understand incidental particle formation mechanisms due to their direct implications on particle composition and, thus, exposure. It is advisable that personal exposure and subsequent risk assessments in occupational settings should include dedicated metrics to monitor UFPs (especially, incidental).

Abstract:Airborne particulates may have acute and/or long-term adverse effects on human health. In order to study the underlying mechanisms and to set up guidelines for policy makers there is a need for aerosol inhalation studies. Since many of the epidemiologically relevant aerosols originate from complex natural and/or technological processes, and the exposure aerosols have to mimic them as closely as possible, it can not be expected either that the aerosol is simple itself in terms of, e.g., chemical composition, physical stability, and biological activity or that the aerosol generation and handling procedures are straightforward. The purpose of this chapter is therefore to outline the most important processes leading to suitable aerosols for inhalation toxicology experiments.

Abstract:Although much progress has been made on single particle analysis by inductively-coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS), many problems remain for online analysis of environmental aerosol by ICP-MS, such as aerosol direct introduction and response time. In this article, an aerosol sample introduction interface coupled with ICP-MS for direct introduction and quantitative online monitoring of environmental aerosol has been developed and characterized. Through the interface, sampling of environmental aerosol, matching of the sampling aerosol flow and the finally introduced flow, conversion of carrier gas from air-to-air-argon mixture, removal of water vapor and matrix gas, could all be implemented. Moreover, it supports the standard solution nebulization and addition method by which the transport efficiency and the instrumental sensitivity are calibrated totally in real time. Online analytical performance of ICP-MS coupled with the interface was evaluated. Results show that the response time for online monitoring of environmental aerosol improves dramatically as the aerosol sampling flow increases from 100mL/min to 1 L/min. The sensitivity is improved through condensation growth and concentration enrichment process. The background equivalent concentration of U-238 in aerosol is 1.1 x 10(-9) g/m(3). As a preliminary comparison study, uranium concentration in environmental aerosol in a clean room was monitored by online and offline methods. Copyright 2014 American Association for Aerosol Research

Abstract:Air pollution and particulate matter (PM) are the leading environmental cause of death worldwide. Exposure limits have lowered to increase the protection of human health; accordingly, it becomes increasingly important to understand the toxicological mechanisms on cellular models at low airborne PM concentrations which are relevant for actual human exposure. The use of air liquid interface (ALI) models, which mimic the interaction between airborne pollutants and lung epithelia, is also gaining importance in inhalation toxicological studies. This study reports the effects of ALI direct exposure of bronchial epithelial cells BEAS-2B to ambient PM1 (i.e. particles with aerodynamic diameter lower than 1 μm). Gene expression (HMOX, Cxcl-8, ATM, Gadd45-a and NQO1), interleukin (IL)-8 release, and DNA damage (Comet assay) were evaluated after 24 h of exposure. We report the dose-response curves of the selected toxicological outcomes, together with the concentration-response association and we show that the two curves differ for specific responses highlighting that concentration-response association may be not relevant for understanding toxicological outcomes. Noteworthy, we show that pro-oxidant effects may be driven by the deposition of freshly emitted particles, regardless of the airborne PM1 mass concentration. Furthermore, we show that reference airborne PM1 metrics, namely airborne mass concentration, may not always reflect the toxicological process triggered by the aerosol. These findings underscore the importance of considering different aerosol metrics to assess the toxicological potency of fine and ultrafine particles. To better protect human health additional metrics should be defined, than account for the properties of the entire aerosol mixture including specific as particle size (i.e. particles with aerodynamic diameter lower than 20 nm), the relevant aerosol sources (e.g., traffic combustion, secondary organic aerosol …) as well as their atmospheric processing (freshly emitted vs aged ones).
Physical and chemical characterization of urban aerosol particles through Soot Particle Aerosol Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:Introduction Urban aerosol particles consist of complex mixtures, including organic compounds, salts and black carbon. The physical and chemical properties of the particles determine their effects on human health and climate, and gives clues to their origins and atmospheric fates. We report a preliminary characterisation of the submicrometer street side Copenhagen aerosol during the winter of 2011-12. Method Aerosol mass spectrometry (AMS) is a powerful tool for on-line chemical measurements of PM1. The High Resolution Time of Flight (HRToF)-AMS probes non-refractory PM (NR-PM) with high sensitivity and time resolution, and with a mass resolution sufficient for elemental analysis. Sizeresolved measurements are possible through use of Particle Time of Flight (PToF). NR-PM is defined as the fraction of PM that vaporizes when impacted on a heated (600 °C) tungsten (W) surface under vacuum. Refractory black carbon (rBC) is an important component of PM. This has prompted the development of the Soot Particle-AMS (SP-AMS), in which an intracavity laser (1064 nm) is used to vaporize particles which contain rBC (Onasch et al 2012). In this campaign the SP-AMS was used in dual vaporizer mode, where the W vaporizer is used alternated with combined laser and W vaporization. The data produced is comparable with standard HRToF AMS data, but contains additional information about the rBC content of particles. Furthermore, comparing the two alternating measurements yields information on the internal mixing of rBC with other species.

Opinion: How will advances in aerosol science inform our understanding of the health impacts of outdoor particulate pollution?

Abstract:Air pollution, characterized by high levels of particulate matter (PM), poses the greatest environmental threat to human health, causing an estimated 7 million deaths annually and accounting for 5 % of the global gross domestic product (GDP). While the health impacts of PM are influenced by the toxicity of its individual chemical constituents, the mortality burden of PM is solely based on its total mass concentration. This is because of a lack of large-scale, high-resolution data on PM chemical composition, needed for epidemiological assessments. Identifying which PM constituents are harmful to health has been the "holy grail" of atmospheric science since the landmark 1993 study on six US cities established a definitive link between PM and mortality. Ever since, atmospheric scientists have focused on understanding aerosol composition, emission sources, and formation pathways, while longitudinal epidemiological studies have required individual-level exposure data, employing land use regression models for the prediction of exposures at fine resolutions. In this opinion article, we argue that the time has come to shift the focus towards incorporating PM chemical composition into epidemiological health assessments, laying the foundation for the development of new regulatory metrics. This shift will enable the creation of targeted guidelines and subsequent regulations, prioritizing mitigation efforts against the most harmful anthropogenic emissions. Central to this shift is the availability of global, long-term, high-resolution data on PM chemical composition that are obtained through field observations and modelling outputs. In the article, we underscore key milestones within aerosol science that have been integral for advancing this foundational shift. Specifically, we examine emerging modelling tools for estimating exposure to individual PM components, present the type of ambient observations needed for model developments, identify key gaps in our fundamental understanding of emissions and their atmospheric transformation, and propose advancing cross-disciplinary collaboration between aerosol scientists and epidemiologists to understand the health impacts of individual PM components. We contend that aerosol science has now reached a pivotal moment in elucidating the differential health impacts of PM components, representing a first step towards their incorporation into air quality guidelines.

Abstract:Abstract Aerosol samplers are critical tools for studying indoor and outdoor aerosols. Development and evaluation of samplers is often labor-intensive and time-consuming due to the need to use monodisperse aerosols spanning a range of sizes. This study develops a rapid experimental methodology using polydisperse solid aerosols to evaluate size-resolved aerosol-to-aerosol (AtoA) and aerosol-to-hydrosol (AtoH) sampling efficiencies. Arizona Test Dust (diameter 0.5–20 μm) was generated and dispersed into an aerosol test chamber and two candidate samplers were tested. For the AtoA test, aerosols upstream and downstream of a sampler were measured using an online aerodynamic particle sizer. For the AtoH test, aerosols collected in sampling medium were mixed with a reference sample and then measured by the laser diffraction method. The experimental methodology were validated as an impressive time-saving procedure, with reasonable spatial uniformity and time stability of aerosols in the test chamber and an acceptable accuracy of absolute mass quantification of collected particles. Evaluation results showed that the AGI-30 and the BioSampler sampler had similar size-resolved sampling efficiencies and that efficiencies decreased with decreasing sampling flow rate. The combined evaluation of AtoA and AtoH efficiency provided more comprehensive performance indicators than either test alone. The experimental methodology presented here can facilitate the design and choice of aerosol sampler.

Real‐time transformation of outdoor aerosol components upon transport indoors measured with aerosol mass spectrometry

Abstract:Outdoor aerosols are transported indoors, where their component concentrations depend on aerosol size, physiochemical properties, indoor sources and losses, and cross-environment gradients of temperature and relative humidity. We explored these dependencies by measuring real-time outdoor and indoor non-refractory, submicron (PM1 ) aerosol component mass concentrations in a mixed-use laboratory space with an Aerodyne mini-aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) and black carbon (BC) with an aethalometer. The median indoor/outdoor (I/O) ratios were 0.60 for sulfate, 0.25 for nitrate, 0.52 for ammonium, 0.73 for organics, and 0.61 for BC. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) on organic aerosol data identified hydrocarbon-like (HOA), cooking (COA), and oxygenated (OOA) factors. By assuming sulfate was nonvolatile, lost only by mechanical processes, and without indoor sources, the transformations of other components i due to partitioning changes or indoor sources were parameterized by normalizing their I/O ratios by sulfate's I/O ratio, that is, (I/O)i/SO4 . Component-specific behavior was quantified by regressions of (I/O)i/SO4 to outdoor-to-indoor temperature differences. Nitrate and HOA strongly and OOA weakly showed losses with increasing temperatures indoors vs. outdoors, and HOA likely had an indoor source. To our knowledge, this is the first reported deployment of an AMS to analyze real-time indoor aerosol composition and outdoor-to-indoor transformation.

Abstract:It is important to characterize the composition of aerosol particles in air, which causes adverse health effects and millions of deaths each year. Aerosol, or particulate matter (PM), is difficult to characterize because of its wide range of particle sizes; constituents (various organic and inorganic compounds); concentration; morphology; state (liquid or solid); and time-dependent modification. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy is a non-destructive method, which provides useful chemical information about the constituents. Current methods for collecting samples use filters that are made of materials which interferes with the IR spectra and thus lowers detection capabilities. Hence, collection on an IR-transparent substrate is desirable. In order to make a good quantitative measurement of the composition of the aerosol using IR-spectroscopy, a collector design should achieve some objectives. Low size-dependence, low chemical interference, and high collection efficiency are required to collect an aerosol sample that is identical to the aerosol in air. Furthermore, high spatial uniformity in deposition pattern is required to reduce optical artefacts or spectrometer dependence, and high collection mass flux is required to reduce the collection time needed for making a confident claim. Electrostatic precipitation (ESP) is a versatile method of aerosol collection and does not suffer from high pressure drop (which can modify the aerosol chemical composition, for example in filtration), or from bounce-off effects (which preferentially samples the size range and liquids, for example in impaction). ESP devices for particle deposition are present in either a translationally symmetric design (linear system) or a radially symmetric design (radial system). Most ESP designs in the public domain have been designed for different purposes and face limitations for fulfilling objectives stated above. Hence, a new device is necessary to meet performance objectives. Our design is based on an analytical, dimensionless (scalable) mathematical model that embodies the physics of particle migration trajectories due to fluid dynamics and electrostatics that lead to particle capture in a two-stage ESP device. This model allowed us to evaluate the tradeoffs among objectives to arrive at a design optimized across multiple objectives, and across multiple length scales (due to its dimensionless form). We validated this model against numerical simulations using COMSOL Multiphysics software, which is considered to be accurate but can only be run for a limited number of configurations (with respect to geometry and operating parameters) due to its high computational cost. Using the validated analytical model, we investigate the relationship among device geometry, methods of particle introduction, operational parameters, and deposited particle positions (which determines collection efficiency, uniformity, and size dependence), to arrive at a range of designs that meet design criteria. We further report the fabrication of a suitable embodiment using 3D-printing while incorporating ease of operation and handling. Measurement capabilities and limits of the device using different laboratory-generated aerosol are reported.
