Abstract:The field has witnessed the rapid growth in the power conversion efficiency(PCE)of organic solar cells(OSCs)over the past decade,reaching the threshold for practical commercialization.However,a major issue remains that OSC lifetimes are seriously limited by the ultraviolet(UV)-induced photodegradation.Here,inspired by the superior photostability of car paint under sunlight and ambient air,a"sunscreen"molecule,2-(2-hydroxy-5-tert-octylphenyl)benzotriazole(UV329),is used to construct the PM6:Y6 ternary device.The addition of UV329 mainly enhances the ordered stacking of PM6 and increases the light utilization of blend films with the improved crystallization and appropriate phase separation.Accordingly,the ternary device exhibits stronger light response and obviously higher and more balanced carrier mobilities,contributing to higher short-circuit current density,fill factor and PCE.Similar PCE boost is also verified in PM6:BTP-eC9 and PM6:L8-BO systems.The photo-degradation of PM6 dominates the photo-degradation process of PM6:Y6 systems,while the UV329 can effectively suppress such degradation,and thus the ternary device can retain nearly 90％of the initial PCE under continuous illumination for 120 min.Moreover,ternary devices also preserve better thermal stability and shelf-life with the enhanced PCE.This work provides a simple yet effective strategy for simultaneously improving PCE and photostability of OSCs.
Designed Polar Cosolvent‐Prepared Zinc Oxide Film for Efficient and Stable Inverted Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:A novel solvent optimization approach is used to improve the efficiency and stability of inverted OSCs by utilizing the polar cosolvent DMF to prepare ZnO layers. The incorporation of polar cosolvent DMF not only facilitated the sustainable formation of the crucial intermediate Zn (OH)2, but also contributed to reducing vacancy defects and eliminating amine residues in DMF‐ZnO bulk films, thereby significantly decreasing the photocatalytic effect in corresponding devices. Here, a simple method of applying dimethylformamide (DMF) as cosolvent in the sol‐gel technology is used to improve the quality of ZnO bulk films. First‐principles calculations show that with the addition of polar solvent DMF, the adsorption energy (Eads) between the solvent and Zn(OH)2 increases from −1.42 to −1.74 eV, which can stabilize the existence of Zn(OH)2, thereby promoting the ZnO synthesis. Besides, the elimination of amine residues in the DMF‐ZnO film significantly suppress the photocatalytic activity induced by amine‐induced coordination or redox reactions. Inverted organic solar cells (OSCs) based on PM6:Y6 and PM6:BTP‐eC9 achieves impressive power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of 17.58 and 18.14%, respectively. Furthermore, benefiting from the reduced defects of bulk ZnO, pseudo‐bilayer bulk heterojunction (PBHJ) devices based on the optimized ZnO film exhibited superior stability, the PM6:Y6 devices based on DMF‐ZnO ETLs can maintain 90.28% of their initial PCE after 1000 h of thermal aging at 85 °C, and 80.98% of their initial PCE after 168 h of UV aging. This simple solvent optimization strategy can significantly improve the charge transport of ZnO bulk films, making it a reliable strategy for the preparation of electron transport layers in OSCs.

Li-Doped ZnO Electron Transport Layer for Improved Performance and Photostability of Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:Organic solar cells (OSCs) based on an inverted architecture generally have better stability compared to those based on a standard architecture. However, the photoactive area of the inverted solar cells increases under ultraviolet (UV) or solar illuminatiom because of the too-high conductivity of the UV-illuminated zinc oxide (ZnO) interlayer. This limits the potential of the inverted solar cells for industrial applications. Herein, lithium-doped ZnO (Li-ZnO) films are employed as the cathode interlayer to construct inverted OSCs. The incorporation of Li ions is found to reduce the lateral conductivity of the UV-treated ZnO films because of the presence of Li ions, preventing the high-quality-growth of ZnO nanocrystals. This addresses the problem of having too-high conductivity in the UV-treated ZnO layer, causing the increased photoactive area of inverted solar cells. The overall performance of the solar cell is shown to be higher after the incorporation of Li ions in the ZnO layer, mainly due to the increased fill factor (FF), originating from the reduced trap-assisted recombination losses. Finally, the inverted solar cells based on the Li-ZnO interlayer are demonstrated to have a much better long-term stability, as compared to those based on ZnO. This allows the ZnO-based interlayers to be used for the mass production of organic solar cell modules.

Manipulation of Zinc Oxide with Zirconium Doping for Efficient Inverted Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:Solution‐processed zinc oxide (ZnO) is one of the widely used electron transporting layers (ETLs) for organic solar cells (OSCs). However, low optical transparency along with thickness‐sensitivity of ZnO ETL constrains the improvement of photovoltaic performance and large‐scale fabrication compatibility. To resolve these issues, zirconium (Zr) doping is applied to tailor the optoelectronic and morphological properties of ZnO layer. This approach not only improves light transmittance with the suppressed parasitic absorption, but also provides an optimized surface morphology for enhancing charge extraction property and reducing potential of charge trap‐assisted recombination. By using ZnO:Zr as ETL in inverted device configuration, the maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PM6:Y6:PC71BM solar cell devices is up to 17.2%, which makes an enhancement of 9.55% compared to ZnO‐based devices (15.7%). As the thickness of ZnO:Zr ETL increases to ≈60 nm, the presence of the lower parasitic absorption together with uniform surface morphology can help photovoltaic performance maintain above 15%, which is beyond the performance of the pristine ZnO‐based device achieving only 11.9%. Such superiority of ZnO:Zr ETL is also validated by a series of well‐known BHJ systems, where in comparison with the devices based on pristine ZnO ETL, a better photovoltaic performance from ZnO:Zr device can be achieved.

AIE Molecules UV‐Filtering Effect Improves the Photostability of Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:Aggregation‐induced emission molecular layer is coated on ZnO‐electron transport layer as an optical barrier layer to fabricate efficient organic solar cells. Through this strategy, the ZnO/TPIZ‐based devices exhibit over 1500 h of T80 under continuous exposure to 365 nm, 5 mW cm–2 UV light, which is far more stable than the ZnO‐based devices, which have only less than 24 h of T80. Due to the poor stability of organic solar cells (OSCs), especially ultraviolet light (UV) stability, they are not yet up to the standard for commercial applications. Inverted devices based on the ZnO electron transport layer (ETL) are relatively thermal‐ and air‐stable, while their UV light stability is poor. Moreover, the active layer materials undergo severe degradation under UV light, which also causes the degradation of the device. Here, aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) molecules as an optical barrier layer are coated between ZnO‐ETL and active layer to fabricate efficient OSCs with excellent UV photostability. AIE molecules can avoid direct photodegradation of the active layer materials by absorbing UV light. At the same time, they can passivate the oxygen defects on the ZnO surface and prevent photocatalytic degradation of the active layer materials. Therefore, the ZnO/TPIZ‐based devices maintain 84% of the original power conversion efficiency (PCE) with continuous irradiation by 5 mW cm–2 UV light (365 nm) for 1500 h, and similarly T80 for more than 700 h under 20 mW cm–2 UV light exposure. Moreover, the ZnO/TPIZ‐based devices also preserve excellent thermal stability accompanying the upgrading of PCE.

Abstract:The introduction of a Self‐assembled monolayer (SAM) for modification of zinc oxide enhances device performance and stability. Interestingly, employing the same SAM material on both sides of the active layer (PM6:Y6) ensures high performance and superior stability of the device. This work underscores the effectiveness of this approach as a viable strategy for achieving stable and high‐efficiency solar cells. The development and use of interface materials are essential to the continued advancement of organic solar cells (OSCs) performance. Self‐assembled monolayer (SAM) materials have drawn attention because of their simple structure and affordable price. Due to their unique properties, they may be used in inverted devices as a modification layer for modifying ZnO or as a hole transport layer (HTL) in place of typical poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene)‐poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) in conventional devices. In this work, zinc oxide (ZnO) is modified using five structurally similar SAM materials. This resulted in a smoother surface, a decrease in work function, a suppression of charge recombination, and an increase in device efficiency and photostability. In addition, they can introduced asfor hole extraction layer between the active layer and MoO3, enabling the use of the same material at several functional layers in the same device. Through systematic orthogonal evaluation, it is shown that some SAM/active layer/SAM combinations still offered device efficiencies comparable to ZnO/SAM, but with improved device' photostability. This study may provide recommendations for future SAM material's design and development as well as a strategy for boosting device performance by using the same material across both sides of the photoactive layer in OSCs.

Abstract:Suppressing trap states and localized electronic states in the forbidden gap of semiconductors as either active layers or contacts is critical to the enhancement of optoelectronic device performance, such as for solar cells, ultrafast photodetectors, field-effect transistors, as well as other optoelectronic applications. In this study, we demonstrate that Lewis bases-passivated metal oxide n-type contacts can effectively improve the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). OSCs with triethanolamine-passivated ZnO show a two orders of magnitude lower trap density, and thus a higher electron mobility, and three times longer charge carrier recombination lifetime, relative to the devices based on as-cast ZnO. Passivated ZnO universally improves the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of OSCs based on varied active layers. P3HT:PC71BM-based solar cells with passivated-ZnO yield 86% PCE enhancement relative to the control devices based on as-cast ZnO, and PM6:Y6-based devices with passivated-ZnO exhibit PCEs up to 15.61%. Furthermore, light stability of OSCs with passivated-ZnO has also been improved along with enhanced device efficiency. A Lewis base is also efficient to passivate SnOx contact for solar cells. This study highlights the importance of defect passivation on contact layers for improvement of the efficiency and stability of OSCs and also provides one facile and effective passivation strategy.

Abstract:Degradation of organic solar cells has always hindered the commercialization of organic solar cells (OSCs). In this paper, we fabricate OSCs with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.20%. The impact of different layers on degradation is studied for the first time by performing accelerated aging test on each layer. The device experiencing accelerated aging process on ITO/ZnO barely decays, indicating the electron transport layer (ETL) ZnO hardly affects the device degradation. The device experiencing accelerated aging process on ITO/ZnO/active layer and the and the device experiencing accelerated aging process on ITO/ZnO/active layer/MoO3 decay fast, manifesting the big impact of active layer and MoO3 on degradation. During the accelerated aging process, the morphology of the active layer changes, hindering light absorption and charge transport. Besides, the work function of hole transport layer (HTL) MoO3 becomes shallower after accelerated aging, making the hole extraction less efficient. Transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) is recorded to investigate exciton physics change during the accelerated aging process, proving that inefficient charge transfer (CT) state excitons formation and separation account for the PCE decay. The mechanism of the degradation of OSCs is discussed, laying the foundation of their commercialization.

Abstract:Abstract Degradation of the kinetically trapped bulk heterojunction film morphology in organic solar cells (OSCs) remains a grand challenge for their practical application. Herein, we demonstrate highly thermally stable OSCs using multicomponent photoactive layer synthesized via a facile one-pot polymerization, which show the advantages of low synthetic cost and simplified device fabrication. The OSCs based on multicomponent photoactive layer deliver a high power conversion efficiency of 11.8% and exhibit excellent device stability for over 1000 h (>80% of their initial efficiency retention), realizing a balance between device efficiency and operational lifetime for OSCs. In-depth opto-electrical and morphological properties characterizations revealed that the dominant PM6- b -L15 block polymers with backbone entanglement and the small fraction of PM6 and L15 polymers synergistically contribute to the frozen fine-tuned film morphology and maintain well-balanced charge transport under long-time operation. These findings pave the way towards the development of low-cost and long-term stable OSCs.

Abstract:As a representative electron transport layer (ETL), Zinc oxide (ZnO) has been widely used in inverted organic solar cells (i-OSCs), while its surface defects and intrinsic "light-soaking" issues have yet to be addressed. Herein, we employ a natural antioxidant curcumin (E100) as a modifier for ZnO to simultaneously improve the photovoltaic performance and photostability of i-OSCs. It is found that modifying ZnO with E100 can align the energy levels and optimize its surface morphology that lead to improved charge transport and recombination properties of the OSCs. Meanwhile, using E100 as modifier can passivate the surface defects of ZnO via the coordination of its strong polar carbonyl groups with Zn2+ of ZnO and quench the photo-generated free radicals to prevent the decomposition of the photoactive materials. As a result, the PM6:Y6-based i-OSCs using ZnO/E100 as ETL yields an enhanced efficiency and photostability than the control device using ZnO as ETL.

Abstract:As an electron transport layer (ETL) widely used in organic solar cells (OSCs), ZnO has problems of energy level mismatch with the active layer and excessive defects on the ZnO surface, which ultimately reduce the efficiency of OSCs. Here, the ZnO:NADH ETL is prepared by modifying the ZnO with green biomaterial nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH). XPS and UPS show that ZnO obtains electrons from NADH and decreases work function of ZnO, thus lowering the interface barrier between ZnO and active layer, which is conducive to electron collection in OSCs. At the same time, the oxygen vacancy density on the ZnO surface reduces after modification with biomaterial NADH, thus improving the electrical conductivity of ZnO. Finally, we use PM6:Y6 and PM6: L8-BO as active layers, and use ZnO:NADH as a novel ETL in OSCs, achieving efficiencies of 16.77% and 18.21%, respectively. The stability of the device with ZnO:NADH ETL has also been improved to a certain extent. This study provides an effective method for ZnO modification, and also contributes to the environmental protection in the device preparation process.

Abstract:Currently, one main challenge in organic solar cells (OSCs) is to achieve both good stability and high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). Here, highly efficient and long-term stable inverted OSCs are fabricated by combining controllable ZnMgO (ZMO) cathode interfacial materials with a polymer:fullerene bulk-heterojunction. The resulting devices based on the nanocolloid/nanoridge ZMO electron-transporting layers (ETLs) show greatly enhanced performance compared to that of the conventional devices or control devices without ZMO or with ZnO ETLs. The ZMO-based OSCs maintain 84%-93% of their original PCEs over 1-year storage under ambient conditions. An initial PCE of 9.39% is achieved for the best device, and it still retains a high PCE of 8.06% after 1-year storage, which represents a record high value for long-term stable OSCs. The excellent performance is attributed to the enhanced electron transportation/collection, reduced interfacial energy losses, and improved stability of the nanocolloid ZMO ETL. These findings provide a promising way to develop OSCs with high efficiencies and long device lifetime towards practical applications.
An Efficiency of 16.46% and a T 80 Lifetime of Over 4000 h for the PM6:Y6 Inverted Organic Solar Cells Enabled by Surface Acid Treatment of the Zinc Oxide Electron Transporting Layer

Abstract:For the inverted organic solar cells (OSCs), the interface contacts between the ZnO electron transporting layer and the organic active layer play an important role in the device performance and stability. Since the solution-processed ZnO surface always contains some base or zinc salt contaminants, we explored how the surface pH conditions influence the performance and stability of the nonfullerene acceptor (NFA) cells. A tight relationship between the surface pH condition and the device performance and stability was established. Specifically, device performance and stability were improved by treating the ZnO films with acid solutions but worsened after base treatment. The large number of hydroxyl groups on the surface of the solution-processed ZnO films was proved to be the main reason for the surface pH condition-related performance, which caused oxygen-deficient defects and unfavorable vertical phase separation in the blend films, hindered the photogenerated charge transfer and collection, and consequently resulted in low short-circuit current density and power conversion efficiency (PCE). The surface -OH groups also boosted the photocatalytic activity and led to fast degradation of the nonfullerene acceptor. Removal of the surface -OH groups can alleviate such problems. Different acid solutions, ZrAcac, 2-phenylethylmercaptan (PET), and glutamic acid (GC), were used to treat the ZnO films, and PET treatment was the most effective treatment for performance improvement. An efficiency of 16.46% was achieved for the PM6:Y6 cells and the long-term stability under continuous illumination conditions was significantly improved with a T80 lifetime of over 4000 h (4410 h), showing the excellent long-term stability of this heterojunction solar cell. Our understanding of the surface pH condition-related device performance and stability would guide the development of a feasible method for solving the interface problems in OSCs. We also provide a practical strategy to modify ZnO with acid solutions for high-performance and stable NFA OSCs.

17.13% efficiency and superior thermal stability of organic solar cells based on acomb‐shape active blend

Abstract:With rapid progress, organic solar cells (OSCs) are getting closer to the target of real application. However, the stability issue is still one of the biggest challenges that have to be resolved. Especially the thermal stability of OSCs is far from meeting the requirements of the application. Here, based on the layer‐by‐layer (LBL) process and by utilizing the dissolubility nature of solvent and materials, binary inverted OSCs (ITO/AZO/PM6/BTP‐eC9/MoO3/Ag) with comb‐shape active morphology are fabricated. High efficiency of 17.13% and simultaneous superior thermal stability (with 93% of initial efficiency retained in ~900 hours under 85 oC in N2) are demonstrated, showing superior stability to reference cells. The enhancements are attributed to the formed optimal comb‐shape of the active layer, which could provide a larger D/A interface thus more charge carriers, render the active blend a more stable morphology, and protect the electrode by impeding ion's migration and corrosion. To the best of our knowledge, this is the best thermal stability of binary OSCs reported in the literature, especially when considering the high efficiency of over 17%.

Abstract:Organic solar cells (OSCs) with an inverted structure have the potential to exhibit both high efficiency and stability, in which the electron transport layer (ETL) plays a crucial role. In this study, we have developed an efficient ETL for inverted structure OSCs by modifying commercially available SnO 2 nanoparticles with a simple molecule 2-(3-(dimethylamino)propyl)− 1,3-dioxo-2,3-dihydro-1 H-benzo[de]isoquinoline-6,7-dicarboxylic acid (NMA). The surface modification effectively eliminates the light soaking issue observed in devices with bare SnO 2 . Furthermore, it significantly enhances the efficiency and stability of the photovoltaic devices. With the hybrid ETL, the device based on PM6:L8-BO achieves an outstanding power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.33 %. Notably, the champion device exhibits excellent shelf, thermal and photo stabilities. It maintained 99.7 % and 87.1 % of its original efficiency under storage in N 2 and thermal stress at 65 °C for 1000 h, respectively. Under continuous 1-sun illumination with maximum power point tracking for 800 h, the device retained 86.6 % of its initial efficiency. Additionally, the hybrid ETL shows good generality on other typical active layer systems based-OSCs. This work presents an effective hybrid ETL approach for the development of high-performance OSCs.

Abstract:An efficient hybrid and photoconductive electron transportation layer (ETL) by introducing a water/alcohol‐soluble fluorescent conversion agent, sodium 2,2'‐([1,1'‐biphenyl]‐4,4'‐diyldivinylene)‐ bis(benzenesulfonate)(CBS), into Zinc Oxide (ZnO) is successfully developed for the non‐fullerene organic solar cell (OSC), which produces a higher device power conversion efficiency especially in devices with thicker ETLs and improves the photostability of ZnO:CBS‐based OSC devices by reducing the photocatalytic degradation of the non‐fullerene electron acceptor. Zinc oxide (ZnO) is widely used as an electron transporting layer (ETL) for organic solar cells (OSCs). Here, a low‐cost commercial water/alcohol‐soluble fluorescent conversion agent, sodium 2,2′‐([1,1′‐biphenyl]−4,4′‐diyldivinylene)‐bis(benzenesulfonate) (CBS), is incorporated into ZnO to develop a novel organic‐inorganic hybrid ETL for high‐performance OSCs. The photoinduced charge transfer from CBS to ZnO significantly improves the charge transport properties of ZnO, resulting in faster electron extraction and reduced charge recombination in OSC devices with ZnO:CBS ETLs. ZnO:CBS‐based devices exhibit higher power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) than their pure ZnO‐based counterparts, especially in devices with a thicker ETL, which is more suitable for roll‐to‐roll and large‐area module processing. Furthermore, the strong ultraviolet‐light absorption capability of CBS inhibits the photodegradation of the active layer, improving the photostability of ZnO:CBS based OSC devices. Therefore, this work provides a simple and effective strategy for realizing high‐performance OSCs with high PCE and good photostability, which can further facilitate the commercialization of OSCs.

Abstract:Over the past decades, the field of organic solar cells (OSCs) has witnessed a significant evolution in materials chemistry, which has resulted in a remarkable enhancement of device performance, achieving efficiencies of over 19%. The photoactive layer materials in OSCs play a crucial role in light absorption, charge generation, transport and stability. To facilitate the scale-up of OSCs, it is imperative to address the photostability of these electron acceptor and donor materials, as their photochemical degradation process remains a challenge during the photo-to-electric conversion. In this review, we present an overview of the development of electron acceptor and donor materials, emphasizing the crucial aspects of their chemical stability behavior that are linked to the photostability of OSCs. Throughout each section, we highlight the photochemical degradation pathways for electron acceptor and donor materials, and their link to device degradation. We also discuss the existing interdisciplinary challenges and obstacles that impede the development of photostable materials. Finally, we offer insights into strategies aimed at enhancing photochemical stability and discuss future directions for developing photostable photo-active layers, facilitating the commercialization of OSCs.

Abstract:In this insightful review, the crucial importance of stability in organic solar cells (OSCs) for widespread adoption is emphasized. It shows recent progress in developing highly stable OSCs through innovative material design and device engineering, paving the way for commercial application. This compelling exploration enriches the understanding of stability in OSCs. Organic solar cells (OSCs) are a promising photovoltaic technology that employs organic semiconductor material as the photoactive layer, which has the unique advantages of light weight, large‐area flexible fabrication, low‐cost, and semitransparent. In recent years, the performance of OSCs has been significantly improved, and the highest power conversion efficiency has exceeded 19%. Despite the tremendous progress in OSCs, the major bottleneck in realizing the commercialization of OSCs is the device stability. Therefore, reviewing the recent research progress on the stability of high‐performance OSCs is urgent and necessary. This review discusses the factors limiting device lifetime, such as metastable morphology, air, irradiation, heat, and mechanical stresses. Additionally, this review presents the research progress over the last 5 years, focusing on enhancing device stability from the perspective of photoactive layers and other functional layers, which includes material design and device engineering, such as solid additives, device fabrication, optimizing buffer layers, using stable electrodes, and encapsulation. Lastly, this review explores current commercialization challenges and prospects, including using advanced machine learning techniques to assist experimental research.

Green‐Solvent‐Processed Organic Solar Cells with Approaching 20% Efficiency and Improved Photostability

Abstract:The development of high-efficiency organic solar cells (OSCs) processed from non-halogenated solvents is crucially important for their scale-up industry production. However, owing to the difficulty of regulating molecular aggregation, there is a huge efficiency gap between non-halogenated and halogenated solvent processed OSCs. Herein, we fabricate o-xylene processed OSCs with approaching 20% efficiency by incorporating of a trimeric guest acceptor named Tri-V into the PM6:L8-BO-X host blend. The incorporation of Tri-V effectively restricts the excessive aggregation of L8-BO-X, and optimizes the phase-separation morphology, which leads to mitigated trap density states, reduced energy loss and suppressed charge recombination. Consequently, the PM6:L8-BO-X:Tri-V-based device achieves an efficiency of 19.82%, representing the highest efficiency for green-solvent processed OSCs reported to date. Noticeably, with the addition of Tri-V, the ternary device shows an improved photostability than binary PM6:L8-BO-X-based device, and maintains 80% of the initial efficiency after continuous illumination for 1380 h. This work provides a feasible approach for fabricating high-efficiency, stable, eco-friendly OSCs, and sheds new light on the large-scale industrial production of OSCs.

Abstract:Non-fullerene organic solar cells (OSCs) have attracted great attention due to their advantages such as tunable energy levels, reduced energy loss, strong light absorption. Here, three small molecules with polar functional groups were utilized to modify the surface of zinc oxide (ZnO) electron transport layer through self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formation. Inverted non-fullerene OSCs with PBDB-T: ITIC blend as active layer based on the ZnO with SAMs modification showed enhanced device performance (10.90%) compared to that without SAM treatment (10.03%). The ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy results revealed that the SAMs could lower the surface work function of ZnO, allowing for better electron extraction. The analysis results of J-V characteristics under different light illumination intensities suggested more efficient charge dissociation and weaker trap-assisted bimolecular recombination in the devices with SAMs modification. Our work provides an effective approach to modify the ZnO surface for efficient non-fullerene OSCs.
