Abstract:This article initiates a series focusing on the uncertainties associated with temperature measurements using pure rotational Raman-Rayleigh LiDAR in the mid-to-upper atmosphere (20–90 km). We introduce a comprehensive simulation system designed for temperature measurement using pure rotational Raman-Rayleigh LiDARs. This simulation system considers hardware parameter fluctuations, atmospheric parameter variations, and detailed retrieval algorithms during the temperature detection process. Using the Monte Carlo method (MCM), the system achieves, for the first time, a simulation of temperature measurement uncertainties throughout the entire LiDAR measurement process. This article provides an illustrative example of applying the uncertainty simulation system to a prototype. In this example, photon noise (PN), the reference temperature (RT), the laser wavelength (LW), and saturation correction (SC) are significant sources of uncertainty in Raman LiDAR, whereas in Rayleigh LiDAR, PN, SC, and the RT play major roles. Additionally, sensitivity experiments of the uncertainty components are carried out to analyze the linearity of the uncertainty propagation in the two LiDAR systems. Then, two special cases of uncertainty coupling are discussed, which reveals the complexity of uncertainty propagation in LiDARs. The simulation method proposed in this article aids in identifying key sources of measurement uncertainty during the entire measurement process, offering insights for hardware selection and system design in LiDAR development.

Effects of Auxiliary Atmospheric State Parameters on the Aerosol Optical Properties Retrieval Errors of High-Spectral-resolution Lidar.

Abstract:A detailed assessment is carried out in relation to the influence of the uncertainties associated with the input auxiliary atmospheric state parameters on retrieving aerosol optical properties from high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) observations. The study starts from a review of the main spectral structure of the Rayleigh backscattering followed by evaluating the temperature effects on a backscattering cross section of atmospheric molecules based on numerical simulation. It shows that the transmittance of the background interference filter should be taken into account, depending on the full width at half maximum, although overall temperature dependence is negligible. Based on the Taylor expansion of the Tenti S6 model, the systematic errors arising from input temperature and pressure profiles are analyzed. It is demonstrated that the atmospheric pressure profiles have limited effects on the inversion results of aerosol optical parameters, as the atmospheric pressure is usually quite stable. The relative errors of the aerosol backscatter coefficient mainly stem from temperature profile errors and highly depend on the aerosol concentration. Quantitatively, the aerosol backscatter coefficient error could be larger than 5% with a 3 K deviation of temperature when the backscatter ratio is larger than 1.1. The accuracy of aerosol extinction coefficient retrieval is affected not only by the error in temperature, but also by the error in temperature lapse rate; the retrieval accuracy is more sensitive to the latter than the former. Further analysis based on the sounding temperature data shows that the variation of the temperature inversion layer during the night could induce a bias larger than 0.04 km-1 on the aerosol extinction coefficient retrieval. Therefore, the time resolution of temperature measurement from sounding balloons twice per day is too low to obtain an accurate retrieval of the aerosol optical properties from the HSRL.
Lidar Ratio Regional Transfer Method for Extinction Coefficient Accuracy Improvement in Lidar Networks.

Abstract:Lidar networks are essential to study the three-dimensional distribution of aerosols on a regional scale. At present, both Mie-scattering lidar (ML) and advanced lidars are being used in lidar networks. The latter can retrieve extinction coefficients without strict assumptions of the lidar ratio, such as Raman lidar (RL) or high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL). In order to balance the data quality and instrument costs for the lidar network, the lidar ratio regional transfer method in a lidar network is proposed in this paper. We developed a Lidar Ratio and Aerosol Fraction Non-linear Regression (LR-AFNR) model between the lidar ratio and corresponding absorbing aerosol fraction (this paper studied two types of absorbing aerosols: dust and carbonaceous). The aerosol fraction of the sun photometer retrieval was used as a medium to transfer the lidar ratio of HSRL retrieval to a certain range of MLs. This lidar ratio can be the input parameter for ML retrieval and enables the improvement of the extinction coefficient accuracy. The results show that the LR-APNR model is applicable to atmospheric conditions with high mineral dust or carbonaceous aerosol loading, and the maximum relative error of the ML extinction coefficient can be reduced from 46% (dust) and 64% (carbonaceous aerosol) to 20%.

Abstract:The accurate three-dimensional wind field obtained from a Doppler lidar not only helps to comprehend the refined structure of complex airflow but also provides important and valuable solutions for many fields. However, the underlying homogeneity assumption of the typical wind retrieval methods, such as Doppler Beam Swinging (DBS) and Velocity Azimuth Display (VAD) based on a single-lidar, will introduce the measurement uncertainty in complex terrain. In this paper, a new design of a wind measurement campaign involving seven lidars was carried out, which contained the three-lidar-based Virtual Tower (VT) using a time-space synchronization technique and four single-lidars with different elevation angles. This study investigates the performance of VT and VAD measurements under various conditions and evaluates the sensitivity of wind measurement uncertainty of VAD to the horizontal spatial- and probe volume-average effects associated with elevation angles of the laser beam. The inter-comparison results between VT and four VADs show consistent trends with small relative errors under neutral atmospheric conditions with weak wind velocity. Under convective or high Turbulence Intensity (TI) conditions, the relative errors between VT and VAD become larger and more fluctuant. Moreover, it is found that the measurement uncertainty of VAD increases at a given elevation angle with the increasing measurement heights, which is caused by the horizontal homogeneity associated with the conical scanning area. Additionally, the simulated and measured results of four VADs indicate that a larger elevation angle corresponds to a lower measurement uncertainty for a given height.

Abstract:This article constitutes the second installment in a series dedicated to exploring the uncertainties associated with pure rotational Raman–Rayleigh temperature measurement LiDARs in the middle-to-upper atmosphere (20–90 km). It presents uncertainty evaluation methods aimed at addressing the challenge of uncertainty assessment. These methods leverage both the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM) method and the Monte Carlo method (MCM) to ascertain the uncertainty of air density and temperature derived from LiDAR signals. Within the framework of these evaluation methods, various uncertainty sources are considered, encompassing saturation correction, photon noise, background noise, reference temperature, and two special uncertainty sources: atmospheric transmittance correction in Rayleigh LiDAR and the calibration process in Raman LiDAR. An uncertainty evaluation example in accordance with the proposed evaluation method is provided by employing raw signals from full-chain simulation system introduced in another series paper. In this example, we compare the evaluation results of the GUM method with those derived from the MCM. Our findings reveal consistent trends in different uncertainty components between the two methods. In addition, the uncertainty caused by atmospheric transmittance correction is involved with detailed considerations of correlation and iterative methods. The uncertainty resulting from the calibration process in Raman LiDAR, attributed to its nonlinear characteristics, can only be evaluated using the MCM. These findings affirm the applicability of the proposed uncertainty evaluation methods of pure rotational Raman–Rayleigh LiDAR. This research enhances our understanding of the sources of uncertainty in LiDAR systems and provides a convenient approach for evaluating the data quality of temperature LiDAR.

Abstract:A lidar system with Fabry-Perot etalon and an intensified charge coupled device can be used to obtain the scattering spectrum of the ocean and retrieve oceanic temperature profiles. However, the spectrum would be polluted by noise and result in a measurement error. To analyze the effect of signal to noise ratio (SNR) on the accuracy of measurements for Brillouin lidar in water, the theory model and characteristics of SNR are researched. The noise spectrums with different SNR are repetitiously measured based on simulation and experiment. The results show that accuracy is related to SNR, and considering the balance of time consumption and quality, the average of five measurements is adapted for real remote sensing under the pulse laser conditions of wavelength 532 nm, pulse energy 650 mJ, repetition rate 10 Hz, pulse width 8 ns and linewidth 0.003 cm(-1) (90 MHz). Measuring with the Brillouin linewidth has a better accuracy at a lower temperature (< 15 degrees C), while measuring with the Brillouin shift is a more appropriate method at a higher temperature (> 15 degrees C), based on the classical retrieval model we adopt. The experimental results show that the temperature error is 0.71 degrees C and 0.06 degrees C based on shift and linewidth respectively when the image SNR is at the range of 3.2 dB-3.9 dB.

Abstract:Measurement uncertainty is an extremely important parameter for characterizing the quality of measurement results. In order to measure the reliability of atmospheric temperature detection, the uncertainty needs to be evaluated. In this paper, based on the measurement models originating from the Chanin-Hauchecorne (CH) method, the atmospheric temperature uncertainty was evaluated using the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM) and the Monte Carlo Method (MCM) by considering the ancillary temperature uncertainty and the detection noise as the major uncertainty sources. For the first time, the GUM atmospheric temperature uncertainty framework was comprehensively and quantitatively validated by MCM following the instructions of JCGM 101: 2008 GUM Supplement 1. The results show that the GUM method is reliable when discarding the data in the range of 10–15 km below the reference altitude. Compared with MCM, the GUM method is recommended to evaluate the atmospheric temperature uncertainty of Rayleigh lidar detection in terms of operability, reliability, and calculation efficiency.

Abstract:High-resolution three-dimensional (3D) wind velocity measurements are of major importance for the characterization of atmospheric turbulence. The use of a multi-beam wind-LiDAR focusing on a measurement volume from different directions is a promising approach for obtaining such wind data. This paper provides a detailed study on the propagation of measurement uncertainty of a three-beam wind-LiDAR designed for mounting on airborne platforms with geometrical constraints that lead to increased measurement uncertainties of the wind components transverse to the main axis of the system. The uncertainty analysis is based on synthetic wind data generated by an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process as well as on experimental wind data from airborne and ground-based 3D ultrasonic anemometers. For typical atmospheric conditions, we show that the measurement uncertainty of the transverse components can be reduced by about 30 %–50 % by applying an appropriate post-processing algorithm. Optimized post-processing parameters can be determined in an actual experiment by characterizing measured data in terms of variance and correlation time of wind fluctuations. These results allow an optimized design of a multi-beam wind-LiDAR with strong geometrical limitations.

Abstract:The differential discrimination technique using a two-channel Mach-Zehnder interferometer as the frequency discriminator can separately extract the Mie backscattering signal and the Rayleigh backscattering signal, therefore the atmospheric wind and the backscatter ratio can be simultaneously measured. A Doppler lidar system has been developed for tropospheric wind measurement and the preliminary experimental results showed a velocity resolution of better than 0.4 m/s.
Feasibility Study of Water Vapor and Temperature Retrieval Using A Combined Vibrational Rotational Raman and Mie Scattering Multi-Wavelength Lidar

Abstract:A multi-wavelength Raman lidar system which includes both vibrational rotational Raman and Mie scattering spectra has been designed and described. A retrieval algorithm for water vapor and temperature has also been developed based on the potential observations from this Raman lidar system. The performance of this retrieval method and the new lidar system has been evaluated with a synthetic test. Using the U.S. standard atmosphere model and main parameters of this lidar system, we have obtained signal to noise ratio (SNR) of water-vapor backscatter signals under different circumstances of aerosol content, pulse emission energy and signal integration time. With the model calculated backscatter signals, both atmospheric water-vapor and temperature profiles have been retrieved and their uncertainties have been analyzed. These synthetic tests indicate that our new lidar system can obtain profiles of water-vapor and temperature at both day and night time, but with different detection heights. The retrieval algorithm shows less than 30% relative error for water vapor mixing ratio and good accuracy with a minimum detection of temperature less than 2 K.
Impact of probe volume and peak detection methods on lidar rotor effective wind speed and turbulence intensity estimations

Abstract:Lidar simulation techniques are a suitable and increasingly reliable alternative for testing lidar measuring strategies and illustrating their response when combined with modelled wind fields. In this work, two simulation tools are combined to assess the uncertainty in the derivation of the rotor effective wind speed and the wind speed variance from a forward-looking nacelle-mounted continuous wave lidar wind speed estimations. These uncertainties are analysed for a variety of atmospheric turbulence levels and lidar measuring strategies. A synthetic turbulence generator is used to create the reference wind fields. Subsequently, a lidar simulator operated in a continuous-wave mode is used to scan the synthetic wind fields and perform a sensitivity analysis by comparing first- and second-order statistics against reference values. The lidar simulator is enhanced with three Doppler peak detection methods, namely the maximum, the median and the centroid, to extract radial wind speeds from the velocities found within the probe volume. The results show that probe volume and peak detection methods influence the uncertainty of the wind speed variance. The uncertainty in time-averaged and instantaneous rotor effective wind speed estimations is not sensitive to the lidar spatial averaging or peak detection methods investigated. Finally, we saw that the turbulence intensity influences the derived lidar quantities and is the main driver of the variations in rotor effective wind speed uncertainty estimations.

Turbulence Detection in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer using Coherent Doppler Wind Lidar and Microwave Radiometer

Abstract:Abstract. The refractive index structure constant (Cn2) is a key parameter in describing the influence of turbulence on laser transmission in the atmosphere. A new method for continuous Cn2 profiling with both high temporal and spatial resolution is proposed and demonstrated. Under the assumption of the Kolmogorov “2/3 law”, the Cn2 profile can be calculated by using the wind field and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate (TKEDR) measured by coherent Doppler wind lidar (CDWL) and other meteorological parameters derived from microwave radiometer (MWR). In the horizontal experiment, a comparison between the results from our new method and measurements made by a large aperture scintillometer (LAS) is conducted. Except for the period of stratification stabilizing, the correlation coefficient between them in the six-day observation is 0.8389, the mean error and standard deviation is 1.09 × 10−15 m−2/3 and 2.14 × 10−15 m−2/3, respectively. In the vertical direction, the continuous observation results of Cn2 and other turbulence parameter profiles in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) are retrieved. More details of the atmospheric turbulence can be found in the ABL owe to the high temporal and spatial resolution of MWR and CDWL (spatial resolution of 26 m, temporal resolution of 147 s).
Analysis on wind retrieval methods for Rayleigh Doppler lidar

Abstract:A modification method is described for Rayleigh Doppler lidar wind retrieval. Compared to the double-edge theory of Korb et al. [Appl. Opt. 38, 432 (1999)] and the retrieval algorithm of Chanin et al. [Geophys. Res. Lett. 16, 1273 (1989)], it has a greater sensitivity. The signal-to-noise ratio of the energy monitor channel is involved in error estimation. When the splitting ratio of the two signal channels is 1.2, which usually happened during wind detection, it will improve the measurement accuracy by about 1% at 30 km altitude for a Doppler shift of 250 MHz (44 m/s). Stabilities of retrieval methods, i.e., errors caused by the spectrum width deviation including laser pulse, Rayleigh backscatter, and filter transmission curve are first discussed. The proposed method increases the resultant precision by about 15% at 30-km altitude assuming an 8-MHz deviation in full width at half maximum of the Fabry–Perot interferometer.

Abstract:A mobile Rayleigh Doppler lidar based on the molecular double-edge technique is developed for measuring wind velocity in the middle atmosphere up to 60 km. The lidar uses three lasers with a mean power of 17.5 W at 355 nm each and three 1 m diameter telescopes to receive the backscattered echo: one points to zenith for vertical wind component and temperature measurement; the two others pointing toward east and north are titled at 30° from the zenith for zonal and meridional wind component, respectively. The Doppler shift of the backscattered echo is measured by inter-comparing the signal detected through each of the double-edge channels of a triple Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) tuned to either side of the emitted laser line. The third channel of FPI is used for frequency locking and a locking accuracy of 1.8 MHz RMS (root-mean-square) at 355 nm over 2 hours is realized, corresponding to a systematic error of 0.32 m/s. In this paper, we present detailed technical evolutions on system calibration. To validate the performance of the lidar, comparison experiments was carried out in December 2013, which showed good agreement with radiosondes but notable biases with ECMWF (European Centre for Medium range Weather Forecasts) in the height range of overlapping data. Wind observation over one month performed in Delhi (37.371° N, 97.374° E), northwest of China, demonstrated the stability and robustness of the system.

Abstract:Cloud and aerosol contribute with great uncertainty in Earth's radiative budget. There is an urgent need for global 3-D observation of these atmospheric constituents. High-spectral-resolution Lidar (HSRL) can obtain vertical atmosphere profile with high accuracy, hence several space-borne HSRLs are planned to launch in few years. However, as far as we know, the performance evaluation of space-borne HSRL has not been reported yet. In this paper, we present the characteristics of a new designed space-borne HSRL for aerosol and cloud optical property profiling (ACHSRL), which is part of the Aerosol & Carbon Detection Lidar (ACDL) developed in China. The ACHSRL is essentially similar to the famous Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP), which is on board the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO). Moreover, the ACHSRL employs an iodine absorption filter as the spectral discriminator. The atmospheric optical properties data observed by CALIOP is used to estimate the performance of ACHSRL. We chose the level 2 profile data (version 4.10) in South Japan in June 2015 to compare the detection uncertainty of ACHSRL and CALIOP. The simulation calculates the uncertainties of ACHSRL and makes a statistic analysis. The analysis result demonstrates that 73.63% of the backscatter coefficient uncertainties are below 40% for ACHSRL. By contrast, the number is 30.72% for CALIOP. As for absolute extinction coefficient errors, the statistics shows that 76.01% of the extinction coefficient uncertainties are lower than 0.2 km-1 for ACHSRL, while that for CALIOP are 56.97%. The assessment shows that ACHSRL could measure the particulate optical properties with better accuracy and compared with CALIOP. The estimation in this study reveals that the next generation space-borne HSRLs have a promising future. Abstract:A novel Rayleigh Doppler lidar technology based on a quadruple dual-pass Fabry–Perot interferometer (FPI) that can accurately measure wind field, temperature and aerosol backscatter ratio from the troposphere to lower stratosphere is proposed. This study aims to analyse the detection principle of wind speed, temperature and aerosol backscatter ratio in detail and obtain their measurement error formulas. The structure of this type of lidar is studied and designed. The FPI consists of two edge channels FPI-1 and FPI-2, aerosol channel FPI-M and locking channel FPI-L. FPI-1, FPI-2 and FPI-M use a dual-pass optical path, whereas FPI-L uses a single-pass optical path. The parameters of FPI are optimised as follows: the free spectral spacing (FSR) is 12 GHz, the FWHM of FPI-1 and FPI-2 are both 2.2 GHz, the peak-to-peak interval of FPI-1 and FPI-2 is 5.8 GHz, the FWHM of FPI-M and FPI-L are both 1.2 GHz, the peak-to-peak interval of FPI-M and FPI-1 is 2.9 GHz and the peak-to-peak interval of FPI-L and FPI-1 is 2.3 GHz. Under simulated atmospheric conditions, for a daytime sky background brightness of 0.3 Wsr −1 m −2 nm −1 at 355 nm, using a laser with a pulse energy of 350 mJ and a repetition frequency of 50 Hz and a telescope with a 0.45-m aperture, with a vertical range resolution of 30 m at 0–10 km, 100 m at 10–20 km and 500 m at 20–35km, temporal resolution of 30 min, zenith angle of 0° for temperature and aerosol backscatter ratio detection and temporal resolution of 3 min and zenith angle of 30° for radial wind speed detection, the detection performance of the designed Rayleigh Doppler lidar is determined. The simulation results show that the measurement errors of aerosol backscatter ratio, temperature and radial wind speed of the lidar system in the daytime and night-time are less than 4.36 × 10 −3 and 3.32 × 10 −3 (excluding cirrus cloud area), 4.0 K and 3.0 K and 3.8 m/s and 1.9 m/s, respectively, from an altitude of 0.06 to 35km.

Abstract:A novel design of the 532 nm Rayleigh–Mie Doppler lidar receiving system is carried out. The use of polarization isolation technology to effectively improve the receiving system optical reception efficiency, suppress the background noise, not only improves the system wind field detection accuracy, while achieving a high-accuracy temperature measurement. The wind speed and temperature measurement principle of the system are discussed in detail, and the triple Fabry–Perot etalon parameters are optimized. Utilizing the overall design parameters of the system, the system detection performance is simulated. The simulation results show that from 5 to 50 km altitude with vertical resolution of 0.1 km@5 ∼ 20 km, 0.5 km@20 ∼ 40 km, 1 km@40 ∼ 50 km, by using the laser with single pulse energy of 600 mJ, repetition frequency of 50 Hz and the receiving telescope with aperture of 0.8 m, with 2min integration time and in ± 50 m/s radial wind speed range, the radial wind speed measurement accuracies of our designed lidar in the day and night are better than 2.6 m/s and 0.9 m/s respectively, and its performance is obviously superior to that of traditional system 5.6 m/s and 1.4 m/s wind speed accuracies; with 10min integration time and in 210 ∼ 280 K temperature range, the temperature measurement accuracies of the system in the day and night are better than 3.4 K and 1.2 K respectively; since the wind speed sensitivities of the Mie and Rayleigh scattering signals are not exactly the same, in ± 50 m/s radial wind speed range, the wind speed bias induced by Mie signal is less than 1 m/s in the temperature range of 210–290 K and in the backscatter ratio range of 1–1.5 for pair measurement.

Abstract:In this paper, a high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) for profiling atmospheric temperature from the ground to 10 km is proposed. A double Nd:YAG laser produces the transmitted laser at 532 nm. The backscattering lidar signal is passed through two different saturated iodine-vapor filters and thus obtains molecular scattering signals that can be employed to determine the temperature. A coaxial postposition transceiver is constructed with an off-axis aspheric reflective telescope (OART). The design of the transceiver and that of the OART are demonstrated. With this transceiver, the lidar blind zone where the overlap factor is zero can be reduced greatly, and accurate temperature measurement for full elevation can be achieved. The whole system is optimized with theoretical models based on geometrical optics and statistical error analyses. Monte Carlo simulations display the performance of the designed HSRL, showing that the all-day temperature retrieval error is better than 1.4 K from the ground to 10 km. The proposed HSRL is expected to provide more accurate atmospheric auxiliary parameters for the detection of aerosols' optical characteristics.

Abstract:Based on the residual turbulent scintillation theory, the Mie-scattering lidar can measure the intensity of atmospheric turbulence by detecting the light intensity scintillation index of the laser return signal. In order to evaluate and optimize the reliability of the Mie-scattering lidar system for detecting atmospheric turbulence, the appropriate parameters of the Mie-scattering lidar system are selected and optimized using the residual turbulent scintillation theory. Then, the Fourier transform method is employed to perform the numerical simulation of the phase screen of the laser light intensity transformation on the vertical transmission path of atmospheric turbulence. The phase screen simulation, low-frequency optimization, and scintillation index calculation methods are provided in detail, respectively. Based on the phase distribution of the laser beam, the scintillation index is obtained. Through the relationship between the scintillation index and the atmospheric turbulent refractive index structure constant, the atmospheric turbulence profile is inverted. The simulation results show that the atmospheric refractive index structure constant profile obtained by the iterative method is consistent with the input HV5/7 model below 6500 m, which has great guiding significance to carry out actual experiments to measure atmospheric turbulence using the Mie lidar.

Abstract:Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) offers a method of remote wind speed measurement. A kind of all-fiber coherent Doppler lidar was proposed, whose components were connected via optical fibers. The simplicity of the structure is quite convenient for adjustment. First, the signal processing method used in this system was used to measure the simulated Doppler shift. The simulation results indicate that the more noise is added to the signal, the more errors will be obtained from the calculation. Second, the lidar system was utilized to measure the velocity of a hard target. The results conform very closely to the reference, whose absolute errors are less than 0.046 m/s. Finally, the lidar system was used to measure the speed of the water steam. The results deviate from the reference more than that of a hard target, whose maximum absolute error rises up to 0.925 m/s. The simulation and experiment results validate the accuracy and stability of the lidar system.
