Abstract:This article reports the results of an investigation into the activity concentration of natural radionuclides in raw building materials for underground parking lots, together with the assessment of the radiation hazard for the public related to exposure to ionizing radiations. To this purpose, high-purity germanium (HPGe) γ-ray spectrometry was employed in order to quantify the average specific activity of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K natural radioisotopes. With the aim to assess any possible radiological health risk for the population, the absorbed γ-dose rate (D), the annual effective dose equivalent outdoor (AEDEout) and indoor (AEDEin), the activity concentration index (I), and the alpha index (Iα) were also estimated, resulting in values that were lower than the maximum recommended ones for humans. Finally, the extent of the correlations existing between the observed radioactivity and radiological parameters and of these parameters with the analyzed samples was quantified through statistical analyses, including Pearson's correlation, a principal component analysis (PCA), and a hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). As a result, three clusters of the investigated samples were recognized based on their chemical composition and mineralogical nature. Noteworthily, this paper covers a certain gap in science since its topic does not appear in literature in this form. Thus, the authors underline the importance of this work to global knowledge in the environmental research and public health fields.

Abstract:Groundwater may contain radioactive substances which can be dangerous to human health. Concentrations of natural radionuclides polonium (Po), thorium (Th), uranium (U), and radium (Ra) isotopes were measured in groundwater samples collected from different locations in the vicinity of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) site in Carlsbad, New Mexico. The average values of gross activity concentrations of 210Po, 228Th, 238U, 234U, 226Ra and 228 Ra isotopes were determined to be 1.62 Bq L-1 in shallow groundwater and 5.88 Bq L-1 in deep groundwater, respectively. The total radioactivity in deep groundwater was higher than that in shallow groundwater, and most of the radioactivity in the water is from 226Ra. Furthermore, the effective doses for ingestion of natural radionuclides were about 0.333 mSv y-1 for shallow groundwater and about 1.338 mSv y-1 for deep groundwater samples, which are higher than the World Health Organization (WHO, 2017) guideline level (0.1 mSv y-1) for drinking water. Ra dominated the total ingestion dose, contributing 93.06 % and 75.40 % of the total effective doses to the deep and shallow groundwater, respectively. The ingrowth and decay of natural radionuclides suggested that 228Ra/226Ra ratio can be a useful indicator of the source of radioactive contamination. The radioactivity data obtained from the investigated groundwater samples can be used to establish a baseline for radioactivity levels in groundwater around the WIPP site.

Abstract:In this study, the activity concentrations of natural primordial radionuclides in fly ash (FA) samples collected from the landfill area of Afşin-Elbistan A lignite-fired thermal power plant (AE-A LFTPP) located in Kahramanmaraş province of Türkiye were measured using a gamma-ray spectrometer. Also, the radiological risk was assessed using the Residual Radioactivity Onsite 7.2 code. The average activity concentrations of 226 Ra, 232 Th and 40 K in FA samples varied from 291 ± 10 to 853 ± 25 Bq/kg, 23 ± 1 to 125 ± 4 Bq/kg and 112 ± 10 to 315 ± 18 Bq/kg, respectively. The predicted maximum total annual effective dose rate due to the natural radionuclides and their progenies is 4.7, 4.4, and 4.0 mSv/y at t = 1000 y for 0.5-m, 1.25-m, and 2.0-m cover scenarios, respectively. While the predicted maximum total cancer risk is 4.56 × 10 −3 (3.95 × 10 −3 for 226 Ra, 5.18 × 10 −4 for 232 Th and 6.14 × 10 −15 for 40 K), 4.00 × 10 −3 (3.80 × 10 −3 for 226 Ra, 1.90 × 10 −4 for 232 Th and 7.69 × 10 −15 for 40 K) and 3.71 × 10 −3 (3.71 × 10 −3 for 226 Ra, 1.820 × 10 −8 for 232 Th and 7.66 × 10 −15 for 40 K) at t = 1000 y for 0.5-m, 1.25-m and 2.0-m cover scenario, respectively. Results also revealed that the total doses and cancer risks are less in thicker cover scenarios throughout the 1000 y time span and that 226 Ra is the major contributor to the risk in all the scenarios owing to its higher activity concentration than 232 Th and 40 K.

Abstract:The presence of radionuclides in water constitute health risk to man, because the consumption of such water increases the likelihood of incurring cancer. Experimental analysis will enhance the detection of significant radionuclides that cause harm to the population and stimulate remediation. In our laboratory different procedures have been developed to measure natural radioactivity content of drinking water, from boreholes and wells, for routine monitoring, according to the Italian Legislation, D.Lgs. 28/2016. Liquid scintillation counting (LSC) was employed to measure the activity concentration of tritium, radon and gross alpha and beta; total alpha/beta counting, with the thick source method, was developed for the gross alpha and beta specific activity; emanometry, through the Rad7 + RAD H2O setup, was used to estimate the gas radon activity concentration.

Localization of alpha2C-adrenergic receptor immunoreactivity in catecholaminergic neurons in the rat central nervous system.

Abstract:Given the importance of alpha2-adrenergic receptors in the regulation of catecholaminergic transmission, we analysed the distribution of immunoreactivity corresponding to the C-subtype of alpha2-adrenergic receptor in central catecholaminergic neurons using double-label immunohistochemistry with antibodies directed against alpha2C-adrenergic receptors and tyrosine hydroxylase. Cells exhibiting both alpha2C-adrenergic receptor and tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactivity were found in most areas containing catecholaminergic cell groups. However, the percentage of double-labelled cells varied in a region-specific manner. In the medulla, alpha2C-adrenergic receptor immunoreactivity was characteristic of only a minority of cells exhibiting tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactivity (40-43% in area A1/C1, 27-36% in area A2/C2, 35% in area C3) while a larger percentage of double-labelled cells was observed in the pons (65% in A5, 92% in locus coeruleus, 68% in A7). In the midbrain, alpha2C-adrenergic receptor immunoreactivity was detected in most tyrosine hydroxylase-immunoreactive cells in dopaminergic regions (63% in the retrorubral field, 77-83% in substantia nigra, 67% in ventral tegmental area). These results suggest that alpha2C-adrenergic receptors may act as autoreceptors on some central adrenergic and noradrenergic neurons. In addition, the colocalization of alpha2C-adrenergic receptor and tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactivity in dopaminergic cell groups suggests that reported effects of alpha2-adrenergic receptor agonists in these areas may be mediated by the C-subtype.

Abstract:This work is a first contribution to the knowledge of natural radionuclides (226Ra, 238U, 40K, and 232Th) activities in phosphate rock (NORM), phosphogypsum, and phosphogypsum foam (TENORM) from the coastal fertilizer plants of Gabes (Southeastern Tunisia) and the assessment of their radiation hazards on human health and the surrounding environment. In the three studied materials, activities were found to be in the range of 35.4 (40K)-375.1 (226Ra), 10.0 (40K)-220.2 (226Ra), and 79.2 (232Th)-1168.6 Bq kg-1 (226Ra), respectively. Considering the studied radionuclides and materials, the corresponding decreasing activity orders were found to be 226Ra > 238U > 40K > 232Th and PGF > PR > PG, respectively. All human health hazard indices exceeded the worldwide recommended safety limits, which show that the workers in Gabes phosphate fertilizer plants as well as the neighboring human community may potentially be exposed to significant radiation, which may cause several diseases and malformations. It is therefore recommended to avoid and/or reduce the potential fertilizer industry radioactive impact in the area.
Radiological investigation of phosphate fertilizers: Leaching studies

Abstract:The raw materials of the phosphate fertilizer industry are the various apatite minerals. Some of these have high levels of natural radionuclides, and thus phosphate fertilizers contain significant amounts of U-238, K-40 and Ra-226. These can leach out of the fertilizers used in large quantities for resupplying essential nutrients in the soil and can then enter the food chain through plants, thereby increasing the internal dose of the affected population. In the current study, the radiological risk of eight commercially available phosphate fertilizers (superphosphate, NPK, PK) and their leaching behaviours were investigated using different techniques (gamma and alpha spectrometry), and the dose contributions of using these fertilizers were estimated. To characterize the leaching behaviour, two leaching procedures were applied and compared -the MSZ 21470-50 (Hungarian standard) and the Tessier five-step sequential extraction method. Based on the evaluation of the gamma-spectra, it is found that the level of Th-232 in the samples was low (max.7 ± 6 Bq kg-1), the average Ra-226 activity concentration was 309 ± 39 Bq kg-1 (min. 10 ± 8 Bq kg-1, max. 570 ± 46 Bq kg-1), while the K-40 concentrations (average 3139 ± 188 Bq kg-1, min. 51 ± 36 Bq kg-1) could be as high as 7057 ± 427 Bq kg-1. The high K-40 can be explained by reference to the composition of the investigated fertilizers (NPK, PK). U concentrations were between 15 and 361 Bq kg-1, with the average of 254 Bq kg-1, measured using alpha spectrometry. The good correlation between P2O5 content and radioactivity reported previously is not found in our data. The leaching studies reveal that the mobility of the fertilizer's uranium content is greatly influenced by the parameters of the leaching methods. The availability of U to water ranged between 3 and 28 m/m%, while the Lakanen-Erviö solution mobilized between 10 and 100% of the U content.

Abstract:Among the most significant matrices in the field of environmental radioactivity, water is certainly included, being subject to monitoring and controls to safeguard the environment from possible anthropogenic contamination. The presence of radionuclides in water also constitutes a health risk to human, because its consumption increases the likelihood of incurring cancer. In authors’ laboratory, different experimental techniques were employed to measure radioactivity content of surface and drinking water, according to the Italian Legislation and to the Italian Institute for the Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) guidelines. Gamma spectrometry was employed to quantify the specific activity of gamma-emitters anthropogenic contaminants and natural radionuclides; liquid scintillation counting (LSC), to measure the activity concentration of tritium, radon and gross alpha and beta; total alpha/beta counting, with the thick source method, to detect about gross alpha and beta specific activity; emanometry, to estimate gas radon activity concentration.

Abstract:The enhancement of natural radioactivity in groundwater, specifically in natural mineral water, is related to the lithological formations through which water bodies or courses pass. Although natural mineral waters are exempt from monitoring for radioactive substances according to Council Directive 2013/51/EURATOM, this study focuses on the radiological characterization of natural mineral water under Spanish Royal Decree 3/2023. The water studied was taken from Catalan aquifers with different lithological characteristics (sedimentary, metamorphic or granitic) and is sold on local markets. Moreover, radiological data on the water was correlated with its lithological origin and the health risk for different age groups was assessed. Our results showed that of the 26 natural mineral waters studied, 10 exceeded gross alpha screening value (100 mBq/L), all from granitic aquifers. Further research on natural individual radionuclides was conducted on these ten samples. 234 U and 238 U were at around 1100–1600 mBq/L. In addition, 210 Pb was found in two samples, which also presented the highest 226 Ra activity, associated with granitic bedrock and the presence of 210 Po. The annual effective dose was 179.0 μSv/year and 145.9 μSv/year, exceeding 100 μSv/year mainly due to the contribution of 210 Pb > 234,238 U > 210 Po > 226 Ra, in this order. After assessing the lifetime cancer risk, these two samples were determined not to pose a health risk due to ingestion. Although no radiological monitoring is required for natural mineral water, further surveillance is recommendable.

Abstract:In June 2020, observations of anthropogenic radionuclides in Estonia, Finland, and Sweden that were not related to any acknowledged environmental release led to a comprehensive investigation on the source and cause of the unusual emissions. Several of the observed radionuclides were on the list of Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) relevant radionuclides as an indicator of a potential nuclear test, and warranted detailed investigation. While analysis of aerosol samples coupled with Atmospheric Transport and Dispersion Modelling (ATDM) is a standard approach for environmental particulate releases, several new techniques were employed to better characterize the samples that allowed for useful inferences to be made. These inferences were crucial in forming the ultimate hypothesis for determining the facility type and location of the release.

Abstract:The distribution of natural nuclide gamma-ray activities and their respective annual effective dose rates, produced by potassium-40 (40K), uranium-238 (238U), thorium-232 (232Th), and radium-226 (226Ra), were determined for 14 oilfield scale samples from the Middle East. Accumulated radioactive materials concentrate in tubing and surface equipment, and workers at equipment-cleaning facilities and naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORMs) disposal facilities are the population most at risk for exposure to NORM radiation. Gamma-spectra analysis indicated that photo-gamma lines represent the parents of 10 radioactive nuclides: 234Th, plutonium-239, actinium-228, 226Ra, lead-212 (212Pb), 214Pb, thallium-238 (208Tl), bismuth-212 (212Bi), 214Bi, and 40K. These nuclides represent the daughters of the natural radioactive series 238U and 232Th with 40K as well. The mean activity concentration of 238U, 232Th, and 40K were found to be 25.8 ± 11.6, 18.3 ± 8.1, and 4487.2 ± 2.5% Bq kg−1 (average values for 14 samples), respectively. The annual effective dose rates and the absorbed doses in air, both indoor and outdoor, for the samples were obtained as well. The results can be used to assess the respective hazard on workers in the field and represent a basis for revisiting current engineering practices.

Abstract:This paper presents a simple review of the progress and primary achievements of the radiation protection laboratory over its two decades of research. The main research subjects of the laboratory are naturally occurring radionuclides, their environmental behaviors, and the dose evaluation of radon exposure to the public. We developed several precise measurement methods for real environmental surveys and investigations on radon and its progeny. Furthermore, to support related research fields that use radon as a radioactive tracer, in situ continuous measurement techniques for radon in the atmosphere, soil, and water bodies were established. A one-year continuous measurement provided the typical year average (4.9 +/- 2.7 Bq/m(3)) of radon progeny concentration in Beijing, which is consistent with the world average (5 Bq/m(3)) recommended by UNSCEAR. Furthermore, for artificial radionuclides, we conducted wide research on Pu isotopes in Chinese environments. Our study focused on the development of analytical methods for the analysis of Pu in various environmental samples based on ICP-MS. Moreover, we investigated Pu distribution in the downwind area of the Lop Nor nuclear test site and assessed the vertical distributions and migration of Pu in the soil in Southwest China. In the Jiuquan region, we collected surface and core soil samples and determined the Pu239+240 activities and Pu-240/Pu-239 atom ratios in these to assess the level of Pu contamination and the sources of Pu in this region. Using Pu isotopes from the Chinese nuclear tests, we found that in most Jiuquan soil samples, the Pu-240/Pu-239 atom ratios were below the global fallout value, suggesting this area was contaminated by Pu isotopes from the Chinese nuclear test sites. The average Pu-240/Pu-239 atom ratio in the soil samples was similar to 0.16. Besides plutonium, C-14 is another artificial radionuclide we investigated. C-14 is a radioisotope produced as a byproduct in various nuclear facilities and released in the environment under normal operation; it is considered the main dose contributor to the public, making it one of the most important radioisotopes in environmental radiation evaluation. The C-14 analysis of the tree ring samples collected 2 km away from Qinshan NPP revealed that the enhanced values were primarily owing to C-14 discharged from two heavy reactors of Plant III. Moreover, a good correlation existed between the C-14 discharged from Plant III in the growing season and the increased concentration of C-14. We found that almost all C-14 released from Qinshan NPP was deposited within a radius of 6.5 km in 2010, and the maximal C-14 specific activity of most samples is 265.6 Bq/kg C, which is 41.8 Bq/kg C higher than that of the background. For dose contribution to the public, the effective dose resulting from the C-14 discharged from Qinshan NPP was estimated to be 0.5 mu Sv in 2010, which is negligible compared with the annual dose limit for the public (0.25 mSv).
Geochemical Distribution and Environmental Risks of Radionuclides in Soils and Sediments Runoff of a Uranium Mining Area in South China

Abstract:Uranium mining activities have contributed to the distribution and uptake of radionuclides, which have increased the active concentrations of natural radionuclides in environmental media, causing elevated human health risks. The present study aims to assess the spatial distribution characteristics of natural radionuclides in the surface soils and river sediments of the typical granite uranium mining area in South China, as well as investigate the geochemical features of natural radionuclides in the soil and sediments to understand their migration processes. The activity concentrations for 238U, 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K ranged from 17–3925 Bq/kg, 50–1180 Bq/kg, 29–459 Bq/kg, and 240–1890 Bq/kg, respectively. The open-pit mining areas and tailings pond locations exhibited the highest concentrations of activity for all these radionuclides. This distribution points to an elevated potential health risk due to radiological exposure in these specific areas. Additionally, the values of radium equivalent activity (Raeq) and annual gonadal dose equivalent (AGDE) in those areas were higher than the limits recommended by ICRP (2021). 238U and 226Ra have a significant correlation (0.724), and the cluster analysis was showing a statistically meaningful cluster below 5 indicated that they have similar behavior during parent rock weathering and watershed erosion, and the distribution of 232Th and 40K were influenced by the addition of rock types. The activity ratios of 226Ra/238U, 226Ra/232Th, 238U/40K, and 226Ra/40K variation indicated that 40K more mobile than 226Ra and 238U, U(VI) was reduced to U(IV) by organic matter in the downstream area and re-entered into the sediment during the sediment surface runoff in the small watershed of the uranium ore open-pit mining area. Therefore, it is necessary to further seal up and repair the tailings landfill area.

Abstract:In the decommissioning of nuclear facilities, it is necessary to assess the radioactivity inventory for waste classification and management. For nuclear fusion experiments or accelerator-driven neutron sources, the main contribution to the radiological inventory comes from activation products and tritium. When water is used as coolant of components, it may be activated by neutrons with the consequent production of tritium, and short-lived oxygen and nitrogen isotopes. In most cases several chemical elements may be in solution or suspension in water, because of metallic pipes corrosion when occurring, or functional reasons, e.g. chemical conditioning, addition of antifreeze agent, etc. In this case other activation products could be present and need to be characterized. In this case study, a sample of the coolant of the ENEA Frascati Neutron Generator (FNG) has been radiologically, chemically and physically characterized. In such a facility, during the operation, a beam of deuterons is accelerated up to 300 keV and impacts on a tritiated target for producing 14 MeV neutrons exploiting the fusion reaction T(d,n)α. To avoid overheating in the area around the target, a water-cooling loop is used. After several years of operation, a sample of the fluid has been extracted to undergo a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the radionuclides inventory. Gamma spectrometry has not shown any presence of gamma emitters. On the other hand, Liquid Scintillation Counting (LSC) has provided evidence of the presence of beta emitters. It is known that tritium is expected to occur in the sample because of releases from the tritiated titanium target. This work concerns the development of a method to discriminate the tritium contribution with respect to the total beta activity within the FNG coolant. Since it is known that an unspecified percentage of an unknown anticorrosive agent was added to the water coolant, vacuum distillation has been used to extract purified water (containing only tritium) from the coolant sample leaving any (activated) non-volatile compound in the undistilled fraction. After distillation, any fraction has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy, to determine: a) the chemical composition of the colored anticorrosive agent, b) the efficiency of the separation. Afterwards, both fractions have been analysed by means of LSC, and results showed that the main contribution to sample activity is due to tritium and the activity values are consistent with the theoretical H atomic concentration in both fractions.
Radiological impact assessment of natural radioactivity in soil and water in Cape Coast North, Central Region of Ghana

Abstract:The objective of the study is to evaluate natural radioactivity and its radiological impact on the health of the populace within Cape Coast North. Soil and water samples were taken and analysed using a high purity germanium (HPGe) detector. Results for the average activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K in soil samples range from 15.0 to 60.8 Bq/kg with a mean of 20.9 ± 7.2 Bq/kg, 16.3 to 97.2 Bq/kg with a mean of 43.8 ± 2.4 Bq/kg, and 4.7 to 411.4 Bq/kg with an average of 140.6 ± 4.2 Bq/kg, respectively. The absorbed dose rate in air and outdoor annual effective dose to the public were estimated to be 46.6 nGyh-1 and 0.1 mSv, respectively, which fell below the recommended average. The average activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K in water samples were 1.4, 0.4, and 1.2 Bq/L, respectively. The annual effective dose is 0.4 mSv, which is greater than the WHO recommended level of 0.1 mSv/y.
Assessment of Radioactivity Level in the Terrestrial and Marine Organisms in Yangjiang and Its Adjacent Areas (China)

Abstract:In order to assess the radioactive level in the terrestrial and marine organisms in Yangjiang and the adjacent areas, 90Sr, gross beta and gamma-emitting radionuclides (238U, 226Ra, 228Th, 226Ra, 40K, 137Cs, 51Cr, 55Fe, 54Mn, 58Co, 60Co and 65Zn) were analyzed from 2011 to 2012. The annual effective doses were estimated in the high natural radioactive background areas in Yangjiang (HBRAYJ). The specific activities of 238U, 228Th, 226Ra, 40K and 137Cs in all organisms were <0.05-5.20, 0.30-14.50, 0.11-3.58, 11.1-148.0 and <0.003-0.088 Bq/kg, whilst 51Cr, 55Fe, 54Mn, 58Co, 60Co, 65Zn and 110mAg were below the minimum detectable activity. 90Sr and gross beta specific activities were 20.0-143.0 and 0.021-0.316 Bq/kg. Results show that 228Th was significantly higher than 238U and 226Ra of natural U series in organisms due to the rich-Th soils in the HBRAYJ; 228Th, 226Ra, 40K, 137Cs and 90Sr were greatly lower than the limited concentrations in Chinese foods. The internal dose mainly contributes to natural 40K, 226Ra and 228Th. It is useful to provide some basic data and assess the radiological risk from the HBRAYJ and Yangjiang nuclear power plants in future.
Radiological Risk and Impact on Soil Microbial Diversity of Radionuclides in Agricultural Topsoils Downstream of a Decommissioned Hydrometallurgical Uranium Plant

Abstract:Containing only low levels of U-bearing minerals, U ores often have to undergo hydrometallurgical processing for the separation of other minerals. Hydrometallurgical operations, even after being shut down, could pose radiological risk to the ecosystem and human health due to the radionuclide contamination of surrounding environmental media. This study investigated the contamination of radionuclides in the agricultural topsoils downstream of a decommissioned hydrometallurgical U plant in southern China, and assessed the corresponding radiological risk and evaluated its impact on soil microbial communities. The values of geoaccumulation index and potential ecological risk index indicate that all soil samples were significantly contaminated with U and 226Ra, with their concentrations being 4.4-28.7 times and 4.4-114.8 times higher than the corresponding regional background values, respectively. The mean outdoor annual effective dose (OAED) in the sampling plot next to the drainage ditch downstream of the decommissioned plant was up to 3.9 and 8.2 times higher than the Chinese annual effective dose limit and global average, respectively, which is indicative of unacceptable radiological risk for the local farm workers. Soil microbial composition was obviously impacted by the soil physicochemical properties and radionuclides. Specifically, Cladophialophora, which belongs to the fungal genus, exhibited significantly positive correlations with the contents of total Cd, total U, organic U, residual U, and total K, while Methanosarcina, which belongs to the archaeal genus, exhibited significantly positive correlations with the contents of 226Ra and residual U. Soil pH and total N content were significantly correlated with the abundance of several bacterial genera and the dominant archaeal genus (i.e., Candidatus Nitrocosmicus). These findings demonstrate the existence of potentially significant radiological risk associated with the radionuclides released from historical hydrometallurgical processing of U ores to the surrounding environment, and the need for proper site management and remediation.
