Abstract:Soil Cd pollution is a threat to the global ecological environment. Electrokinetic remediation (EKR) generally uses strong electric fields to obtain high removal efficiency, which leads to a series of side reactions and high energy consumption. EKR using low-voltage gradients showed weak migration of Cd and low remediation efficiency. Herein, to develop an effective enhanced EKR technology using low voltage gradient (0.2 V·cm−1), array adsorption zone and polarity exchange were applied simultaneously. Five experiments were conducted to determine the effect of polarity exchange, array adsorption zone and their combination on Cd removal when EKR was carried out at 0.2 V·cm−1. Results showed that the combined use of the array adsorption zone and polarity exchange achieved optimal remediation and average Cd removal efficiency was 83%. Moreover, the reciprocating motion of Cd caused by polarity exchange is no longer a side effect. In the wheat cultivation experiment, the Cd concentration of wheat root, stem and leaf decreased by 86%, 93% and 95% after Cd was removed by EKR coupled with array adsorption zone and polarity exchange. The 30-day energy consumption is 7.72 kWh·m−3, which is far lower than that of other enhancement methods. The present work proposes an effective EKR technology working at low voltage for Cd-contaminated soil.

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) contamination in soil poses a serious threat to human health, and it is necessary to explore an insitu effective method to remove Cd from contaminated soil. In this study, electrokinetic technology was applied to achieve Cd removal and accumulation in soil. The cross-impact of voltage gradient, initial soil moisture content, and citric acid concentration of the electrolyte on the removal efficiency of Cd by electrokinetic remediation and the optimization condition were investigated. In addition, the migration mechanism of Cd in soil was explored by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results show that the best removal rate of Cd from the anode region of soil (P1) could reach 97.32% through the electromigration and electroosmotic which was positively affected by the voltage gradient and the citric acid concentration. The removal rate of Cd in P2 was negatively correlated with the voltage gradient and the citric acid concentration due to the formation of soil-bound Cd (Cd-Soil) and cadmium citrate complexes (Cd-Cit) and the migration of Cd from the P1 region. The accumulation of Cd appeared in the cathode region (P3), which was increased as the voltage gradient increased, due to the formation of precipitates, and decreased as the citric acid concentration increased, due to its ability to neutralize OH- produced by electrolysis. In this study, the optimal conditions considering optimization were at voltage gradient = 1.4 V/cm; initial soil moisture content = 20%; citric acid concentration = 0.07 mol/L. This study demonstrated the in-situ removal of Cd from soil can be effectively achieved by electrokinetic technology, and the accumulation of Cd in part of soil can achieve the reduction of contaminated soil, which is conducive to the subsequent centralized treatment.
Fast and Effective Removal of Cadmium Ion from Water Using Chitosan Encapsulated Magnetic Fe 3 O 4 Nanoparticles

Abstract:A novel CS2-modified chitosan encapsulated magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles (CMCS@Fe3O4) was prepared for the removal of Cd(II) from aqueous solution. The adsorption behavior of the CMCS@Fe3O4 toward Cd(II) was studied using batch method. The CMCS@Fe3O4 showed a rapid process and a superior adsorption capacity for Cd(II). The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order and the equilibrium data were well described by the Langmuir isotherm for the CMCS@Fe3O4. The maximum adsorption capacity of CMCS@Fe3O4 for Cd(II) was 200 mg g −1 from the Langmuir isotherm. Based on Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis, the –NH2 and –SH groups on the CMCS@Fe3O4 mainly participated in the Cd(II) adsorption process. In addition, the common coexisting ions had a negligible impact on Cd(II) adsorption on the CMCS@Fe3O4. Overall, the results reported herein indicated that the CMCS@Fe3O4 is very attractive and implies a potential of practical application for the removal of toxic heavy metals.

Abstract:Electrolyte is one of the critical factors for the efficient and green implementation of electrokinetic remediation (EK). Modelling of enhanced EK in the complex heavy metal contaminated soils was designed. Enhanced electrokinetic remediation experiments with composite electrolyte (citric acid + calcium chloride) were conducted to investigate their influence on the removal of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb), depletion of soil cations, and electric energy consumption. The results indicated that the removal efficiency of lead and cadmium rose from 10.8% and 14% to 15.1% and 22.5%, at the same time, the power consumption increased from 140.4 to 402 Wh since calcium chloride was added to citric acid. With the extension of time, the highest removal of Pb and Cd were 58% and 99.2%, respectively, in the section of S1 where soil pH was 2.5. The dominant cations (detected) in the pore water of the soil were Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , and Mn 2+ , which was more evident with the extension of time. Lead-cadmium transmission efficiency under the electric field was lowered because the ratio of the heavy metal ions to the total amount of cations was very low, especially with the addition of calcium chloride.

Abstract:The combination of electrokinetic-permeable reactive barrier (EK-PRB) is considered as a promising technology for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soils. In this study, considering the convenient operation and recycling, a new sheet PRB material of sodium alginate/polyvinyl alcohol/attapulgite was prepared and characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and fourier transform infrared spectra. Subsequently, the effect of a pretreatment of citric acid (CA) and Shewanella oneidensis (MR-1) on zinc (Zn (Ⅱ)) and cadmium (Cd (Ⅱ)) removal from soils by EK-PRB was investigated. Results showed that Zn (Ⅱ) and Cd (Ⅱ) gradually migrated from anode to cathode in electric field within 8 days’ EK-PRB remediation. The simultaneous addition of CA and MR-1 resulted into the highest electric current, the lowest pH and the more negative soil zeta potential. Correspondingly, the highest removal efficiency of Zn (Ⅱ) and Cd (Ⅱ) also occurred in CA + MR-1 group. The new sheet PRB material effectively captured Zn (Ⅱ) and Cd (Ⅱ) from soils, and the most adsorption occurred in CA + MR-1 group: 1108.36 mg/kg Zn (Ⅱ) and 53.84 mg/kg Cd (Ⅱ) nearby the cathode after 8 days’ remediation. Specifically, for both Zn (Ⅱ) and Cd (Ⅱ), the CA + MR-1 group showed the greatest reduction in exchangeable and carbonate fractions and the highest increase in Fe-Mn oxidation and residual fractions. Overall, with a pretreatment of CA and MR-1, the residual Zn (Ⅱ) and Cd (Ⅱ) in soils were greatly reduced after EK-PRB remediation, due to the migration in the electric filed and the adsorption of the new sheet PRB material.

Abstract:In view of the problems of long remediation time, high energy consumption and low remediation efficiency in electrokinetic remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil, Cd was used to simulate heavy metals in contaminated soil, and response surface method (RSM) was used to optimize the factors influencing electrokinetic remediation. Central Composite (CCD) experimental design method was taken to study the effects of electric field strength, remediation time and water content on removal rate of Cd in soil. Also, polynomial regression mathematical model and optimal reaction conditions were provided for Cd pollution in electrokinetic soil remediation. The simulated equation F was 15.67, the correlation coefficient was 0.9338, and the adjustment correlation coefficient was 0.9042, indicating good regression and strong significance of the equation. The model results showed that, for the optimal experimental conditions, electric field strength was 2.25V·cm -1 , the remediation time was 120.79h, and the water content was 17.06%. On the basis of such reaction condition, intermittent current flow method was adopted d to further enhance the electrokinetic remediation effect. The cadmium removal rate in the soil was increased by 3.17%, 2.86% and 2.43%, respectively, and the electric energy consumption was decreased by 10.54%, 11.28% and 9.97%, respectively, suggesting that the method could effectively improve the removal rate of Cd and reduce energy consumption.
EDTA-enhanced Electrokinetic Remediation of Aged Electroplating Contaminated Soil Assisted by Combining Dual Cation-Exchange Membranes and Circulation Methods

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel method for ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-enhanced electrokinetic (EK) remediation by combining dual cation-exchange membranes and circulation methods for an aged electroplating soil contaminated by chrome (Cr), copper (Cu), and nickel (Ni). Three laboratory-scale EK experiments were carried out, including T1, the traditional EK process; T2, the traditional EDTA-enhanced EK process; and 73, the assisted EDTA-enhanced EK process. The results obtained show that removal of Cu and Ni in T3 was 3-10 times higher than after T1 and T2. However, the removal of Cr (total) was small in all experiments because of the high content of Cr(III). 73 eliminated the metal accumulation problem that existed for T1 and T2. Simultaneously, the highly acidified area (pH < 4) was reduced from 80% in T1 and T2 to only 20% in T3. The results obtained in T3 indicate that the chelating effect of EDTA has a greater ability to dissolve oxidizable Cu and Ni in the soil than the acidification effect. Toxicity evaluation confirmed that the soil treated by T3 presented a lower effect on a luminescent bacterium (Photobacterium phosphoreum T3) because soil pH tended to be more neutral after this treatment. This research provides a novel method for removing heavy metals from soil in a more environmentally friendly way and clarifies the cause of the existing problems of low removal efficiency and high accumulation in the traditional EK process. Electrokinetic remediation of cadmium-contaminated soil using polarity reversal method: Optimization analysis and mechanism exploration

Abstract:Electrokinetic remediation (EKR) has been applied for in-situ removal of Cd from contaminated soil, and the EKR enhanced with polarity reversal has achieved a higher Cd removal efficiency. However, the migration and accumulation mechanisms of Cd in the EKR process have not been investigated. In this paper, the cross-impacts of the voltage gradient, citric acid concentration in the electrolyte, and polarity reversal frequency on the removal efficiency by EKR of Cd and the optimization conditions were investigated. The migration and accumulation mechanisms of Cd were explored by analyzing the changes in electrokinetic process parameters, experimental phenomena, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The results showed that the maximum removal efficiency of Cd reached 82.26%. The optimal conditions were determined by fitting the RSM model using the BBD design. In the EKR experiment with polarity reversal, Cd accumulated mainly in the middle part of the soil, attributed to the formation of chemical precipitation focusing area caused by soil pH transition, ion-induced potential gradient well trapping effect (IIPGWTE), or soil compaction induced by water loss. In conclusion, the various parameters have cross-impacts on the EKR of Cd-contaminated soil, and efficient in-situ removal of Cd from the contaminated soil can be achieved by adjusting the parameter conditions.

Abstract:At present, heavy metal pollution is a major environmental concern and the adsorption technique is a potent method for removal of these heavy metals from wastewater. Activated carbon is one of the best adsorbents for metal ions removal but it is sometimes restricted due to high cost and problems with regeneration hamper large scale application. Low cost adsorbent is alternatively being introduced to replace activated carbon since it is available in large quantity, renewable and inexpensive. Hence, Pennisetum purpureum (elephant grass) was investigated for its potential in cadmium ions removal. The adsorbent was characterized by Fourier Transforms Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and Barrett–Joyner–Halenda (BJH) analyses. The effects of pH (1 to 5), initial metal ion concentration (5 to 25 mg/L), contact time (10 to 60 minutes) and adsorbent dosage (0.2 to 1.0 g) on cadmium ions removal were conducted by batch adsorption experiments. In this study, the FT-IR results demonstrated that the functional groups for untreated and nitric acid-treated P. purpureum mainly consisted of carbonyl, carboxyl, hydroxyl and amine groups which are able to bind with positively charged cadmium ions. SEM micrographs have proven that nitric acid modification would remove the surface impurities of P. purpureum, which increased the surface roughness, produced deep, open pores and better pore size distribution. From the BET and BJH analyses, the treated P. purpureum was mesoporous, had larger surface area and pore volume compared to untreated P. purpureum. The best pH, adsorbent dosage and contact time were pH 4, 0.6 g and 30 minutes, respectively. The highest removal percentage of cadmium ions for both untreated and treated P. purpureum were 92% and 98% correspondingly. The results shown strengthened the fact that both biosorbents have great potential in cadmium ions removal.

Abstract:Cd pollution in soil is a global environmental issue of great concern. The secondary release and low removal rate of Cd are obstacles to the use of adsorption techniques. To develop a sustainable and effective remediation technique, low-voltage direct current (DC) and granular activated carbon (GAC) were applied for in situ Cd removal. The results showed that a low-voltage gradient was more favourable than a high-voltage gradient for Cd removal. A voltage gradient of 0.2 V cm−1 acted as a driving force for Cd migration while limiting the side effects caused by DC. As an auxiliary enhancement measure, polarity exchange was effective in maintaining uniform distributions of soil moisture and temperature as well as a stable pH while improving Cd removal by weakening inhibition caused by OH− generated at the cathodes. The average removal rates of total and bioavailable Cd were 61.05% and 76.96%, respectively. The potential mobility of Cd in soil was assessed by the mobility factor (MF). The MF was lowered from 42.66% to 8.96%, indicating that the risks of Cd mobility were reduced to low levels. The energy consumption and utilization efficiency of the method were 5.65 KWh m−3 and 11.25, respectively. The energy utilization efficiency was significantly higher than the efficiencies of other methods that use DC to improve Cd removal. The results suggested that the in situ removal of Cd by low-voltage DC and GAC was efficient and avoided the secondary release of Cd.

Abstract:Excessive Cd(II) in the soil seriously threats human health and ecological security. It is a challenge to efficiently remove Cd(II) from heavily contaminated soil by sustainable approaches without destroying soil ecological vitality and physicochemical properties. Here, functional polypropylene (AA/ASA-f-PP) fibers sphere with non-clogging, easy separation, and high selectivity for Cd 2+ was prepared. It was combined with 0.2 g/L citric acid solution to remove Cd(II) from contaminated soil. Soil remediation result showed that more than 91% acid-soluble Cd(II), 83% oxidizable Cd(II), and 88% reducible Cd(II) could be removed, most of the unremoved Cd(II) was residual Cd(II) with poor bioavailability. A small amount of citric acid could ensure the adequate release of acid-soluble, oxidizable, reducible Cd(II) from contaminated soil into its solution by complexation. This was attributed to AA/ASA-f-PP fibers sphere could quickly capture Cd 2+ from citric acid - Cd complex. Meanwhile, citric acid returned to its original state which can re-form the complex with Cd 2+ and prompt Cd(II) release from the soil. The separation of citric acid solution from remediated soil could be omitted due to only ‰0.8 citric acid was introduced into the soil and Cd 2+ was finally adsorbed to AA/ASA-f-PP fiber spheres. The generation of wastewater, soil nutrient loss, and high agent consumption can be avoided to ensure the cleaner production of soil remediation. Plant assay showed good ecological vitality of remediated soil and its feasibility for plant cultivation. These results provide a new insight for the remediation of Cd(II) contaminated soil. The potential risks of Cd(II) could be reduced or even eliminated with negligible changes in soil composition and properties. This technology holds the promise of Pb(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and other heavy metals removal from contaminated soil within a few hours.

Abstract:Electrokinetic (EK) remediation has been widely studied at laboratory scales. However, field-scale research is far less. In this study, a 14-day EK remediation was carried out, in a field pilot (4 m2) test and a full-scale (200 m2) application for the first time, in a cadmium (Cd) contaminated paddy agricultural field near a mining area. A low voltage of 20 V was applied at both scales; voltage gradient was 20 V m−1 and 4 V m−1 at the pilot and full scales, respectively. Samples were taken from near the anode and cathode, and in the middle of the electric field, in the soil layers 0–10 cm, 10–20 cm, and 40–50 cm. After the EK remediation, a significant portion of the total Cd was removed in all the layers at the pilot scale, by 87%, 72%, and 54% from the top down, but only in the 0–10 cm layer at the full scale by 74%. As for the plant available (exchangeable and soluble) Cd, significant removal (64%) was only observed in the 0–10 cm layer at the pilot scale. The percentage reduction of the electrical conductivity and removal efficiency of the total Cd was higher near the anode than the cathode. The soil pH was elevated near the cathode but stayed below pH 6 due to the sufficient supply of lactic acid. After the EK remediation, the concentration of the total Cd dropped below the hazard threshold, i.e. 0.4 mg (kg dry wt soil)−1 for agricultural paddy fields in China. A total energy of 2 kW·h and 0.6 kW·h was consumed at the pilot and full scales, respectively. This study showed a successful in situ EK remediation of Cd contaminated paddy agricultural soil, especially in the surface layer, with low voltage and energy demand.

Abstract:Chromium pollution of soil is a serious environmental problem. The methods for remediating heavy metal contaminated soil include: containment, leaching, microbial remediation and phytoremediation. However, the drawbacks, such as high chemical cost, secondary pollution and lack of long-term stability, have limited the practical application of these methods. In this study, an environmentally friendly method of electrokinetic remediation (EKR) combined with adsorption was used to remediate chromium contaminated soil. Two groups of EKR experiments were conducted in the laboratory to study the factors affecting the electric current, pH, and removal efficiency. First, the variation in electric current and electrolyte pH when using different electrolytes (citric acid, sodium chloride, and deionized water) was compared. Then, the effect of remediation time (3, 5, and 7 days) and potential gradient (2, 1, and 0.5 V/cm) on Cr 6+ removal efficiency was studied. Moreover, the mechanisms of heavy metal removal were analysed. The results showed that the citric acid cannot only neutralize hydroxide ions produced by water electrolysis in the cathode but also reduce some of Cr 6+ anions to nontoxic Cr 3+ cations. The Cr 6+ concentration in section S2 and S3 was higher than that in section S1, S4 and S5, because the migration direction of Cr 6+ anion was opposite under the functions of electromigration and electroosmosis. The Cr 6+ removal efficiency reached up to 72.4% under potential gradient of 2 V/cm and remediation time of 5 days, and no toxic chemicals were added or produced. EKR combined with exchange resin adsorption is environmentally friendly and efficient and can be applied in situ.

Abstract:Adsorbent preparation of non-toxicity, low cost, large adsorption capacity and outstanding reusability is imperative in purifying Cd-contaminated water. In this work, novel environmental friendly shell-coated magnetic attapulgite, named as attapulgite/CoFe2O4@SiO2-chitosan/EDTA (ATPCFS-CSEs), was successfully prepared by solvothermal and sol-gel process. Chitosan and EDTA were selected to functionalize the magnetic attapulgite to provide abundant amino groups and carboxyl groups. Sodium tripolyphosphate was chosen as non-toxic cross-linker in surface deposition-crosslinking, and subsequently amidation reaction was taken for functionalization by chitosan and EDTA. The adsorbents were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, VSM, BET and XPS, and the adsorption properties including adsorption isotherm, contact time, adsorbents dosage, pH value of initial solution, competitive ions, desorption experiment and recycling method for repeated use were evaluated. The nano-composite adsorbent exhibited well-defined architecture and paramagnetic behavior. The adsorption behavior agreed well with Langmuir model, and adsorption capacity was up to 127.79 mg/g. High concentration ionic competition experiments showed that the ATPCFS-CSEs has high selectivity. Removal efficiency was still above 88% after 5 cycles. The adsorption mechanism was also discussed. Functional groups complexed with cadmium ions with the formation of stable complexes. ATPCFS-CSEs is an excellent adsorbent for removal and separation of Cd2+ from contaminated water.

Abstract:Green and sustainable techniques are in great demand for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soil. Cadmium ion (Cd2+) in soil could be extracted under an internal electric field and participating on the surface of the electrode. Here, we propose a sediment microbial fuel cell (SMFC) for the electrokinetic remediation of cadmium (Cd) contaminated soil. Within the seven weeks of SMFC operation, the removal efficiency for total Cd could be up to 70.04±0.45%, which was significantly higher than that obtained by open circuit SMFC. The maximum output power density was 71.00 ± 0.82 mW/m2 with a current density of 0.60 ± 0.03 A/m2. Results obtained by electrochemical impedance showed that the inter resistance of SMFC was 944±14 Ω. High-throughput sequencing revealed that the Alpha-, Beta- and Gammaproteobacteria increased to 67.85%-80.99% in the SMFC. The relative abundance of Cd2+/Zn2+-exporting ATPase, participating in Cd2+ reduction, in SMFC varied from 25.83% to 30.68%, which were significantly higher than that of control (11.21% to19.94%). Our findings have presented an effective energy-saving method for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils.

Simultaneous Removal of 2,4-Dichlorophenol and Cd from Soils by Electrokinetic Remediation Combined with Activated Bamboo Charcoal

Abstract:An in situ electrokinetic remediation technique was designed by combining the uniform electrokinetic technology with a new-type of bamboo charcoal as adsorbent. A bench-scale experiment was conducted to investigate the application of this technique for simultaneous removal of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) and Cd from a sandy loam at different periodic polarity-reversals. The contaminated soil was artificially spiked with 100mg/kg 2,4-DCP and 500mg/kg Cd. Two modes of polarity-reversal intervals of 12 and 24h were included. After 10.5d of operation, about 75.97% of Cd and 54.92% of 2,4-DCP were removed from soil at intervals of 24h, whilst only 40.13% of Cd and 24.98% of 2,4-DCP were removed at intervals of 12h. Soil water contents under two operation modes both significantly decreased, but evenly distributed spatially. Soil pH values under two operation modes were all maintained in the range from 7.2 to 7.4, close to the initial value. The electricity consumption per day was 12.24 and 11.61kWh/m3/d, respectively at polarity-reversal intervals of 12 and 24h. In conclusion, at polarity-reversal interval of 24h, electroremediation combined with activated bamboo charcoal was effective in simultaneous removal of 2,4-DCP and Cd from soil. Our results indicate a promising potential in in situ electroremediation of soils co-contaminated with organics and heavy metals.
Removal of Cd from Solution and In-Situ Remediation of Cd-contaminated Soil by a Mercapto-Modified Cellulose/bentonite Intercalated Nanocomposite.

Abstract:A novel intercalated nanocomposite of mercapto-modified cellulose/bentonite (LCS-BE-SH) was synthesized by high-speed shearing method in one step at room temperature, and was applied to remove Cd from solution and remediate Cd-contaminated soil. Results revealed that cellulose long-chain molecules have intercalated into bentonite nanolayers and interlayer spacing was increased to 1.411 nm, and grafting -SH groups improved adsorption selectivity, which enabled LCS-BE-SH to have distinct capability of Cd adsorption (qmax =147.21 mg/ g). Kinetic and thermodynamics showed that Cd adsorption onto LCS-BE-SH was well fitted by pseudo-secondorder and Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Characterizations of the adsorbents revealed that synergistic effect of complexation (e.g., CdS, CdO) and precipitation (e.g., Cd(OH)2, CdCO3) mechanism played a major role in Cd removal. In soil remediation, application of LCS-BE-SH was most effective (67.31 %) in Cd immobilization compared to the control (8.85 %), which reduced exchangeable Cd from 37.03 % to 11.44 %. Meanwhile, soil pH, soil organic matter, available phosphorus, and enzyme activities (catalase, urease, and dehydrogenase) were improved LCS-BE-SH treatment. The main immobilization mechanism in soil included complexation (e.g., CdS, CdO) and precipitation (e.g., Cd(OH)2, Cd-Fe-hydroxide). Overall, this work applied a promising approach for Cd removal in aqueous and Cd remediation in soil by using an effective eco-friendly LCS-BE-SH nanocomposites.
Iron-carbon Material Enhanced Electrokinetic Remediation of PCBs-contaminated Soil.

Abstract:The high toxicity and persistence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the environment demands the development of effective remediation for PCBs-contaminated soils. In this study, electrokinetic (EK) remediation integrated with iron-carbon material (Fe/C) was established and used to remediate PCB28 (1 mg kg−1) contaminated soil under a voltage gradient of 1 V cm−1. Effects of Fe/C dosage, soil type, and remediation time were investigated. The operational condition was optimized as 4 g kg−1 Fe/C, yellow soil, and 14 d-remediation, achieving PCB28 removal efficiency of 58.6 ± 8.8% and energy utilization efficiency of 146.5. Introduction of EK-Fe/C did not significantly affect soil properties except for slight soil moisture content increase and total Fe content loss. Soil electrical conductivity exhibited an increasing trend from anode to cathode attributed to EK-induced electromigration and electroosmosis. EK accelerated the corrosion and consumption of reactive Fe0/Fe3C in Fe/C by generating acid condition. Fe/C in turn effectively prevented EK-induced soil acidification and maintained soil neutral to weak alkaline condition. A synergistic effect between EK and Fe/C was revealed by the order of PCB28 removal efficiency-EK-Fe/C (58.6 ± 8.8%) > EK (37.7 ± 1.6%) > Fe/C (6.8 ± 5.0%). This could be primarily attributed to EK and Fe/C enhanced Fenton reaction, where EK promoted Fe/C dissolution and H2O2 generation. In addition to oxidation by Fenton reaction generated ·OH, EK-mediated electrochemical oxidation, Fe/C-induced reduction and migration of Fe/C adsorbed PCBs were all significant contributors to PCB28 removal in the EK-Fe/C system. These findings suggest that the combination of EK and Fe/C is a promising technology for remediation of organics-contaminated soil.
Cadmium(II) adsorption by recyclable Zeolite-Loaded Hydrogel: Extension to the removal of Cadmium(II) from contaminated soil

Abstract:Excessive cadmium(II) (Cd(II)) in soil has gravely jeopardized global ecosystem stability and human health. The removal of Cd(II) is a permanent cure to remediate Cd(II)-contaminated soil. Herein, a recyclable removal material, zeolite@cellulose-poly(acrylamide) hydrogel (Z@CA) was developed. Batch adsorption experiments and characterisations (SEM-EDS, FTIR, XRD, and XPS) were conducted to explore the adsorption capacity and mechanism of Z@CA. A pot experiment was established to evaluate the effect of Z@CA on soil Cd(II) remediation and Cd(II) toxicity in water spinach. The results showed that in aqueous solutions, the maximum adsorption capacity of Cd(II) by Z@CA was 84.4 mg·g −1 . Electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, and surface complexation collectively facilitated Cd(II) capture by Z@CA. Even after five adsorption–desorption cycles, Z@CA maintained a Cd(II) removal efficiency of 89.88%. The results of the pot experiment showed that after applying Z@CA (2.5 w/w) in soil for 21 days, the content of bioavailable Cd(II) and total Cd(II) significantly decreased by 59.38% and 1.75%, respectively. The recovery rate of Z@CA reached 94.77% and maintained its original intact structure. In addition, the Cd(II) content of water spinach was reduced by 91.43% compared to the treatment without Z@CA, the weight, height, and relative chlorophyll content reaching 1.34, 1.73, and 1.49 times that of the treatment without Z@CA. The ideal application of Z@CA provides novel approaches and insights into the remediation of Cd(II)-contaminated soils.

Abstract:The characteristics of migration and its influencing factor of cadmium in sandy loam soil by uniform electrokinetics as well as the adsorption property by a new material-bamboo charcoal were investigated through bench-scale experiments, and the feasibility of using electrokinetic technique combined with the newly developed bamboo charcoal for remediation of cadmium contaminated soils was analyzed as well. The results show that the bamboo charcoal is good adsorption material which has comparably strong adsorption effect on Cd, bearing potential in future use, which could be simulated by both Freundlich and Langmuir models (R2 > 0.96). The migration rates of cadmium in sandy loam were high up to 0. 6786 - 0.6875cm/h under an electric gradient of 1.0V/cm, depending upon the concentration of cadmium and the distribution of electric field density. Electrokinetics effectively transported the heavy metal in the soil. In the new electrokinetic tech combining the bamboo charcoal with the same electric gradient above under the polarity reversal period of 48 hours, the cadmium in the soil could be wiped off with high efficiency (removal efficiency 79.6% in 12 days) and the pH together with water content could be well retained. The electric current in the process changed periodically according to the reversal. As a new technique, the electrokinetic movement-bamboo charcoal adsorption holds high potential in future use.
