Abstract:Nondeterministic recursive procedures are considered in which parameters may be passed by use of call-by-value or one of two different formulations of call-by-name. These procedures are given an operational semantics via an evaluation mechanism. We define a denotational semantics using so-called nondeterministic domains, which are function spaces endowed with two partial orders. An operational characterization of equality of procedures under this denotational semantics is then given.
Anxiety, Depression, Disease Disability, and Health-Related Quality of Life in Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Purpose: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has posed a threat to global health, including mental health. This study aimed to examine the impact of the pandemic on psychological health and to identify the factors associated with anxiety in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted between September and November 2020, at the rheumatology clinics of two tertiary care hospitals. Eligible participants were adults with a confirmed diagnosis of RA. Data collected included socio-demographics, contact history, commitment to COVID-19 precautionary measures, medication-taking behavior, the hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS), the European Quality of Life (QoL) measure (EQ-5D-3L), and the health assessment questionnaire disability index (HAQ-DI). Results: Of the 252 invited eligible patients, 204 agreed to participate. The majority were aged 41–50 years (28.2%), female (86.5%), and nonsmokers (96%), had at least one comorbidity (38.8%), had missed medications (8.8%), and had psychiatric illnesses or were on psychiatric medication for the past 3 months (15.4%). Borderline-abnormal anxiety levels were reported in 32.8% of patients. The mean standard deviation score for HADS depression was 3 (3), that for the EQ-5D-3L index was 0.587 (0.378), and that for the HAQ-DI was 0.947 (0.887). After adjusting for age, sex, presence of psychiatric illnesses or psychiatric medication use and noncompliance with medication, higher levels of anxiety were significantly associated with a higher level of depression, RA disability index, and pain intensity ( p- value< 0.05). In contrast, higher health-related QoL was significantly associated with lower levels of anxiety ( p- value< 0.001). Conclusion: During the mid-phase of the pandemic in Saudi Arabia, almost one-third of RA patients reported the presence of anxiety symptoms. Higher anxiety levels were found to be associated with depression, health-related QoL, and disease disability in RA patients.

Abstract:Genome instability is a hallmark of most human cancers. Although a mutator phenotype is not required for tumorigenesis, it can foster mutations that promote tumor progression. Indeed, several inherited cancer-prone syndromes are due to mutations in DNA repair pathways. However, sporadic tumors are usually proficient in DNA repair, making it unlikely that unrepaired lesions are a major source of genome instability in sporadic cancers. A decade ago, I argued in another CSHL Press publication that a "collapse in telomere function can explain a significant portion of the genetic instability in tumors" (de Lange 1995). Since that time, the structure of mammalian telomeres has been analyzed, the consequences of telomere dysfunction have been determined, a mouse model for cancer-relevant aspects of telomere biology has been developed, and the nature and magnitude of cancer genome rearrangements have been revealed. In light of these developments, this is an opportune time to revisit the conjecture that telomere dysfunction contributes to genome instability in human cancer.

Abstract:Express shipment service requires that shipments be picked up and delivered within specified time intervals e.g., 24 hours, 48 hours or 3-5 days. In this paper, we describe the express shipment service design problem faced by a carrier and present a model and column generation approach for its solution. Our approach can find near optimal air service designs for a fixed aircraft fleet or for a fleet of unspecified size and make-up. In the latter case, the service design, fleet size and fleet composition are determined simultaneously. We have implemented our solution procedure, and a large carrier is using it to plan their air service operations and to evaluate various operating scenarios. The results indicate that service designs are generated that allow for improved service with a reduction in annual operating costs measuring in the millions of dollars.

Abstract:Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), has ravaged millions of lives globally due to its severe symptoms and associated complications, especially among immunocompromised patients. [ 1 ] On June 19, 2023, about 87,159,156 cases and 6431,700 deaths due to COVID-19 have been reported worldwide. [ 2 ] Thus, all nations impacted by this viral infection have experienced the aftermath as a consequence. Nevertheless, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) will be the main focus area for this study, which till date has reported about 810,394 incidences and 9255 deaths (June 19, 2023). [ 2 , 3 ] Victims of this pandemic often experience mild symptoms including fever, cough, fatigue, and loss of smell and taste. [ 4 ] In addition, sore throat, headache, diarrhea or eye irritation or pain were also reported as clinical signs of COVID-19. [ 5 ] However, in severe cases, patients may experience serious chest pain, loss of mobility, and shortness of breath (hypoxia). [ 4 ] Nonetheless, a previous study in Saudi Arabia reported that old age, being a male, the presence of comorbidities, chronic respiratory diseases and cardiovascular illness are independent risk factors that heighten the severity of COVID-19 cases and its associated complications and deaths. [ 6 ] Thus, individuals with underlying medical conditions such as obesity, diabetes, stroke, asthma, and chronic kidney diseases are at a higher risk of being seriously ill (severe symptoms and complications), hospitalized, and dead when infected by SARS-CoV-2. [ 7 ]

Abstract:Background: Identifying prognosticators/predictors of COVID-19 severity is the principal focus for early prediction and effective management of the disease in a time-bound and cost-effective manner. We aimed to evaluate COVID-19 severity-dependent alteration in inflammatory and coagulopathy biomarkers. Methods: A hospital-dependent retrospective observational study (total: n = 377; male, n = 213; and female, n = 164 participants) was undertaken. COVID-19 exposure was assessed by performing real-time PCR on nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs. Descriptive and inferential statistics were applied for both continuous and categorical variables using Rstudio-version-4.0.2. Pearson correlation and regression were executed with a cut-off of p < 0.05 for evaluating significance. Data representation by R-packages and ggplot2. Results: A significant variation in the mean ± SD (highly-sever (HS)/moderately severe (MS)) of CRP (HS/MS: 102.4 ± 22.9/21.3 ± 6.9, p-value < 0.001), D-dimer (HS/MS: 661.1 ± 80.6/348.7 ± 42.9, p-value < 0.001), and ferritin (HS/MS: 875.8 ± 126.8/593.4 ± 67.3, p-value < 0.001) were observed. Thrombocytopenia, high PT, and PTT exhibited an association with the HS individuals (p < 0.001). CRP was correlated with neutrophil (r = 0.77), ferritin (r = 0.74), and WBC (r = 0.8). D-dimer correlated with platelets (r = −0.82), PT (r = 0.22), and PTT (r = 0.37). The adjusted odds ratios (Ad-OR) of CRP, ferritin, D-dimer, platelet, PT, and PTT for HS compared to MS were 1.30 (95% CI −1.137, 1.50; p < 0.001), 1.048 (95% CI −1.03, 1.066; p 0.05), −0.813 (95% CI −0.734, 0.899, p < 0.001), 1.347 (95% CI −1.15, 1.57, p < 0.001), and 1.234 (95% CI −1.16, 1.314, p < 0.001), respectively. Conclusion: SARS-CoV-2 caused alterations in vital laboratory parameters and raised ferritin, CRP, and D-dimer presented an association with disease severity at a significant level.

Abstract:Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection has become a clinical threat to healthy people as well as immunocompromised patients and those with pre-existing chronic diseases around the world. This study, which used a cross-sectional correlational design, aimed to assess the levels of fear and health anxiety and to investigate their predictors during the current outbreak of COVID-19 in immunocompromised and chronic disease patients in Saudi Arabia. Sociodemographic and clinical data, fear of COVID-19, and health anxiety measurements were collected by online surveys from June 15 to July 15, 2020. Univariate and multiple linear regression analysis was used to identify predictors. A total of 1,030 patients in 13 provinces in Saudi Arabia completed the questionnaire. A significant number of patients with chronic diseases experienced considerable levels of fear and anxiety during the COVID-19 outbreak. It was found that 21.44% of participants met the criteria for anxiety cases, and 19.4% were considered borderline anxiety cases. In regression analysis, significant predictors of fear and health anxiety were female gender, lower education, middle-aged, divorced or widowed, receiving immunosuppressants, type of chronic disease (Crohn’s disease, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases), and media use as a source of knowledge about COVID-19. Immunocompromised and chronic disease patients are vulnerable to fear and anxiety during epidemic infectious diseases such as COVID-19. Optimizing this population’s compliance with appropriate infection prevention and control strategies is crucial during the infectious outbreaks to ensure their safety, to decrease the risk of infection and serious complications, and reduce their fear and health anxiety. Effective positive psychological interventions and support strategies also need to be immediately implemented to increase psychological resilience and improve the mental health of these patients. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, chronic disease patients in Saudi Arabia need special attention from health authorities, policymakers, and healthcare professionals to manage maladaptive forms of health anxiety and fear.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic presented a challenge to the care of patients with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs). The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of the pandemic on the care of RMDs patients and their health and well-being. This cross-sectional study involved 120 RMDs patients at the rheumatology department at Suez Canal University Hospital in Ismailia, Egypt, in July 2020. Patients were interviewed for sociodemographic and disease-related history. Further assessments were performed using Kessler 6-items, fears of COVID-19, and COV19–impact on quality of life scales. Rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus represented the majority of our sample of RMDs patients (72.5% and 19.2%, respectively). About 50% of patients reported experiencing limitations in the access to rheumatologic care, and a similar percentage had changed or discontinued their medications. Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs shortage and concerns about the increased risk of COVID-19 infection due to immunosuppressive drugs were the most frequently reported reasons for nonadherence. The percentage of patients with uncontrolled disease had significantly increased from 8.3% prior to the COVID-19 pandemic to 20% during the pandemic. About 60% of patients reported a high level of psychological distress. In conclusion, the pandemic negatively influenced mental health, quality of life, adherence to medications, access to rheumatology care, and the degree of disease control of RMDs patients.

Abstract:Background: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is an increasingly recognized complication of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Many risk factors for RA-related ILD were reported. The current study aims to explore the features and risk factors of Saudi patients with RA-ILD. Methods: This is a multicenter, retrospective, observational study of patients with RA-ILD. Clinical and radiological data from patients with RA-ILD were obtained from electronic medical records, including demographics, clinical characteristics, laboratory tests, pulmonary function tests, ECHO, and HRCT images. Result: Out of 732 patients, 57 had RA-ILD. The mean age at the time of ILD diagnosis was 61.9 (± 12.2) years. RA-ILD diagnosis was significantly less among females (p = 0.008). Patients who ever smoked had significantly more RA-ILD (p < 0.001). Patients with RA-ILD were more likely to present with medical comorbidities, namely diabetes (p < 0.001), hypertension (p < 0.001), ischemic heart disease (p < 0.001), and osteoarthritis (p = 0.030). The multivariate analysis revealed that the age (OR: 1.035, 95% CI: 48.45-52.86, p = 0.0001); gender (OR: 2.581, CI: 1.77-1.86, p = 0.001), DM (OR: 2.498, 95% Cl: 1.65-1.76, P = 0.0001), HTN (OR: 1.975, 95% Cl: 1.61-1.74, P = 0.019), IHD (OR: 6.043, 95% Cl: 1.89-1.93, P = 0.0001) have a significant positive association with RA-ILD. No significant differences were observed between seropositive parameters with or without RA-ILD (p > 0.05). The most common symptoms of RA-ILD were cough (55.6%) and dyspnea (30.2%), and the most common ILD pattern was Non-specific Interstitial Pneumonia (NSIP) (55.6%) followed by Usual Interstitial Pneumonia (UIP) (38.9%). Traction bronchiectasis (75.5%) and glass ground opacities (73.6%) were also observed. The mean FVC and DLCO at baseline were 64.6% and 53.3%, respectively. Conclusion: In this cohort of patients, Saudi RA-ILD patients had a predominant NSIP pattern conversely to what is seen globally. These findings could be explained by the lower rates of smoking in our patient population. Future prospective national studies are needed to confirm the current findings and better evaluate RA-ILD epidemiology and risk factors.
Factors associated with severe infection in rheumatoid arthritis patients: lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:Purpose This aimed to identify the factors associated with severe/critical coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. Methods Two-hundred RA patients diagnosed according to the American College of Rheumatology/ European League Against Rheumatism (ACR/EULAR) classification criteria with proven COVID-19 infection were recruited and categorized according to the world health organization (WHO) COVID-19 severity grading into 2 groups: patients with mild/moderate COVID-19 ( n = 164) and patients with severe/critical COVID-19 ( n = 36). Comparison between both groups was done to identify the risk factors associated with severe/critical infection. Incidence of RA disease activity flare defined as increase in clinical disease activity index (CDAI) more than 10 points following infection was calculated. Results Multivariate analysis identified history of previous serious infection, age > 60 years, and diabetes as factors positively associated, whereas COVID-19 vaccination was negatively associated with severe/critical infection. Following COVID-19 infection, the number of patients with severe/critical COVID-19 who had high RA disease activity and the incidence of flares was significantly higher in comparison to patients with mild/moderate COVID-19 ( P < 0.001 and 0.003; respectively). Conclusion Age > 60 years, diabetes, and history of previous serious infections are risk factors for severe/critical COVID-19, while vaccination has a protective role in RA patients. Infection particularly when severe is associated with risk of disease flare.

Patient Characteristics and Clinical Outcomes During the 2020-2021 COVID-19 Wave: An Observational Study at a Tertiary Hospital in Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Background and objective The continued prevalence and threat of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have been reported, and evidence suggests that several people still get infected with the virus. Gaining a thorough understanding of the patient demographic factors and laboratory findings could contribute to assessing the severity, mortality, and progression of COVID-19. In light of this, the current study aimed to evaluate the demographic characteristics, laboratory findings, and outcomes of confirmed COVID-19 patients at a tertiary hospital in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Methodology We collected data spanning the period 2020-2021 from the electronic health records of Al-Noor Specialized Hospital, Ma including demographics (age, gender, and nationality), severity (i.e., ICU admission), length of hospital stay, mortality, and laboratory parameters. Results We observed an overall mortality rate of 10.2% (338 of 3,307 patients). The mortality rate was significantly higher in males (n=210; 62.1%) and patients aged more than 70 years (n=91; 26.9%). Patients with blood group O comprised 131 (29%) of the 338 non-survivors, followed by those with A (n=85; 25.1%) and B groups (n=79; 23.4%). The mortality rate among ICU patients was 63.3% (n=214). Furthermore, the following laboratory findings showed abnormal mean values in terms of severity and mortality in COVID-19 patients: hemoglobin (HB) concentration, white blood cell (WBC) count, lymphocyte count (LC), C-reactive protein (CRP), creatinine (CREA), and uric acid (UA) levels. Conclusions Old age, male gender, and certain laboratory findings have a critical role in the severity and mortality risk in COVID-19 patients. There was no significant association between blood type and the severity and mortality of COVID-19. Continuous monitoring based on these findings may be essential to managing COVID-19 patients.

Abstract:Context: The possible associations between the different blood groups and clinical factors with COVID-19 infection among patients in Makkah city. Objective: To investigate the relationship between ABO blood groups and COVID-19 infection in patients who were tested positive and to elucidate the most common ABO blood groups with a higher infectivity of COVID-19 and disease association. Materials and methods: This was an observational cross-sectional study that included COVID-19 patients diagnosed with PCR and who were hospitalized in Al-Noor Specialist Hospital (Makkah) during the period between March to November 2020. The ABO and Rhesus blood groups alongside the clinical characteristics were determined and retrieved from medical records and HESN of the Ministry of Health of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Results: The overall confirmed COVID-19 cases included in this study were 1,583 patients who underwent positive PCR testing between March and November 2020. The frequencies of blood groups were as follows: group O+ (37%), group A+ (29.2%), group B+ (22.6%), group AB+ (5.1%), group O- (2.8%), group B- (1.8%), group A- (1.1%), and group AB- (0.4%). However, no significant correlations were observed for ABO groups and Rh types with the severity of COVID-19 illness. Conversely, signs and symptoms of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), pneumonia, and respiratory failure symptoms, alongside a history of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, chronic kidney diseases, and congestive heart failure significantly increased the risk of death from COVID-19 infection. Moreover, the rates of fever, cough, and asthma were markedly lower in the deceased group compared with the recovered group of patients. Conclusion: The association between the different blood groups with the prevalence and mortality of COVID-19 among infected patients has yet to be elucidated as we found no significant differences in the observed versus expected distribution of ABO phenotypes among the included cases. The prevalence of RDS, pneumonia, and respiratory failure was found higher among hospitalized COVID-19 patients in the deceased group. However, other factors such as fever, cough, and asthma appeared to be more significantly lower than in the recovered group.
Impact of vaccination on morbidity and mortality in adults hospitalized with COVID-19 during the omicron wave in the Jazan Region, Saudi Arabia

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) vaccination on morbidity and mortality in adults hospitalized with COVID-19 during the omicron wave in the Jazan Region, Saudi Arabia.METHODS: A 6-month record-based historical prospective study enrolled COVID-19 adult patients admitted between January and June 2022. Individuals were classified into 3 groups according to their immunity status (immunized, partially immunized, and not immunized). Death, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and mechanical ventilation were identified as the primary outcomes, collectively referred to as "serious outcomes". On the other hand, the length of hospital stays longer than 5 days was categorized as a secondary outcome. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate independent factors and the relationship between the outcomes and vaccination status.RESULTS: Among the 634 COVID-19 patients admitted to Jazan hospitals, 46.4% were fully immunized, 19.7% were partially immunized, and 33.9% were not immunized. Not being immunized was significantly associated with ICU admission (odds ratio [OR]=1.91, 95% confidence interval [CI]: [1.17-3.11]; p=0.009), mechanical ventilation (OR=2.11, 95% CI: [1.25-3.56]; p=0.005), increased length of hospital stays (OR=1.79, 95% CI: [1.24-2.59]; p=0.002), and death (OR=3.03, 95% CI: [1.85-4.98]; p<0.001).CONCLUSION: Our study underscores the importance of a comprehensive approach for managing COVID-19 patients that includes vaccination against the disease.

Abstract:Background: The global pandemic of SARS-CoV-2, or COVID-19 continues to attack all human systems. Although COVID-19 is a respiratory disease, various extra-pulmonary manifestations, including musculoskeletal and neuropathies/myopathies was reported. This study aimed to investigates the long-term impacts of COVID-19 infection on physical health, capability of daily life activities, musculoskeletal and neurological functions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Methods: A total of 499 adults recovered from COVID-19 infection of both sexes, who resided in the KSA were recruited randomly and invited to participate in this cross-sectional web-based survey. A self-administered structured questionnaire was used as an instrument of data collection. All respondents returned the questionnaire. Their responses were recorded, stored into a Microsoft Excel sheet 2010 and analyzed with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24. Percentages were used to convey descriptive data. The percentages were presented with a 95% confidence interval (CI). For statistical significance, a 0.05 p-value was used. Results: The overall prevalence of neurological and musculoskeletal disorders as follows: headache (63.1%), muscle ache or weakness (62.3%), vertigo (25%), concentration problems (21.8%), breathing troubles (20.4%), loss of balance (19.4%), seizure (1%), and Guillain-Barre Syndrome (0.6%). The results also revealed a significant association between the influence of COVID-19 infection and daily activities, gender and respiratory disorders. Conclusion: The findings highlighted and concluded that COVID-19 infection had an impact on respiratory, nervous, musculoskeletal systems and affect daily activities.
Identification of ataxia telangiectasia heterozygotes, a cancer-prone population, using the single-cell gel electrophoresis (Comet) assay.

Abstract:Heterozygotes of ataxia telangiectasia (AT) may comprise up to 1% of the general population. Because these individuals have no clinical expression of AT but may be highly radiosensitive and strongly predisposed for several forms of cancer, identification of AT carriers represents a considerable interest in cancer epidemiology and radiotherapy. We report a new approach for the in vitro identification of AT-heterozygotes based on the evaluation of the radiosensitivity and DNA damage repair ability of peripheral blood mononuclear cells using the single-cell gel electrophoresis (Comet) assay. The assay was performed on cells isolated from four different groups of individuals: (1) apparently healthy donors (n = 10); (2) patients with breast cancer showing a normal reaction to radiotherapy (n = 10); (3) a group of obligate AT carriers (parents of AT-homozygotes, n = 20); and (4) AT-homozygotes (n = 4). Cells irradiated with 3 Gy of x-rays were assayed for three parameters: (1) the initial and (2) residual DNA damage and (3) the kinetics of DNA damage repair. Both AT-heterozygotes' and AT-homozygotes' cells were found to be highly sensitive to x-irradiation. Quantitative evaluation of the single-cell electrophoregrams revealed that the average initial DNA damage in AT-heterozygous and AT-homozygous cells was almost three times higher than that in control non-AT cells. In addition, the DNA repair process in irradiated AT carrier cells was almost three times slower, and the extent of irreparable DNA damage in these cells was three times greater than in controls. Simultaneous assessment of the three parameters enabled correct identification of all tested AT carriers. This method seems to be a sensitive and useful tool for populational studies as a rapid prescreening test for a mutated AT status. The approach can also be extended for prediction of the in vivo radiosensitivity, which would enable optimization of individual radiotherapy schedules.
Mental Health of COVID-19 Patients-A Cross-Sectional Survey in Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Background: This study aims to investigate the mental health of COVID-19 patients in Saudi Arabia. Method: A cross-sectional study was carried out targeting confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Saudi Arabia. Due to travel and time constraints as well as the accessibility of patients, cases were included from East Jeddah Hospital, King Abdulaziz Hospital, and the Oncology Center in Jeddah. The data were collected using a predesigned self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire addressed COVID-19 cases, personal data, medical history, smoking, traveling abroad, and work-related conditions. Additionally, data regarding contact level with COVID-19 cases were considered. The mental health statuses of the patients were assessed using a validated Arabic version of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HAD) scale. The study included 261 COVID-19 patients whose ages ranged from 18 to 65 years. Results: The survey findings revealed that 13% of COVID-19 patients had a borderline level of anxiety, 26.8% were considered anxiety cases, while 60.2% were normal. The findings also revealed that 29.9% had a borderline level of depression, 18.4% were considered depression cases, while 51.7% were normal. Conclusions: This study concluded that COVID-19 patients experience anxiety and depression, and as the COVID-19 epidemic continues to spread, the results of the study are particularly useful in developing a strategy to psychologically support COVID-19 patients.

Abstract:Multiple sclerosis reportedly coexists with disorders of autoimmune origin. The prevalence with which such disorders occur in the MS population has not been adequately investigated. We reviewed the medical records of 828 patients with definite MS and found that 4.8% had a past or present associated disorder in which autoimmune mechanisms presumably play a role. The cumulative prevalence of these disorders was no higher than that estimated for the general population. Serum from 105 patients, without clinical evidence of an associated autoimmune disorder, was tested for the presence of antinuclear, thyroid, parietal cell, smooth muscle, and mitochondrial antibodies. A significantly higher prevalence (p less than 0.01) of generally low titers of one or more autoantibodies was found in serum from the MS group, compared with a control group of 105 patients with other neurologic disorders. The increased frequency of serum autoantibodies probably reflects the existence of a nonspecific B cell overactivity in MS.
Post-acute COVID-19 condition in Saudi Arabia: A national representative study

Abstract:BackgroundMany survivors of COVID-19 have developed symptoms and diseases similar to those observed after severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). Therefore, this study aimed to characterize the symptoms that appear after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection has been eradicated and to determine their relationship with COVID-19 severity.MethodsThis multicenter, retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in all eligible confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection from Saudi Arabia. Study participants were randomly selected using computerized random sampling from a population of 314,821 patients. Descriptive statistics were used to describe baseline demographic data and clinical characteristics. Categorical variables were presented as counts and percentages, while continuous variables were presented as means and standard deviations.ResultsApproximately 70% of patients were found to have five or fewer symptoms simultaneously. Late symptoms (in the ongoing symptomatic COVID-19) occurred in 225 (22·5%) patients with the most common late symptoms being loss of smell, loss of taste, fatigue, shortness of breath, and cough (52·4%, 31·1%, 11·5%, 10·2%, and 8·9% of patients with late symptoms, respectively). We also found that the presence of acute symptoms of COVID-19 and admission to the hospital were significant independent predictors of the post-COVID-19 condition.ConclusionSaudi patients with COVID-19 develop a wide range of symptoms, similar to those observed and reported in other countries. The loss of smell, the loss of taste, shortness of breath, and fatigue were the main persistent symptoms. Regular follow-up of COVID-19 survivors is highly recommended to minimize the burden of the post-acute COVID-19 condition and improve the quality of life of patients.
