Abstract:Background and objective The continued prevalence and threat of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have been reported, and evidence suggests that several people still get infected with the virus. Gaining a thorough understanding of the patient demographic factors and laboratory findings could contribute to assessing the severity, mortality, and progression of COVID-19. In light of this, the current study aimed to evaluate the demographic characteristics, laboratory findings, and outcomes of confirmed COVID-19 patients at a tertiary hospital in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Methodology We collected data spanning the period 2020-2021 from the electronic health records of Al-Noor Specialized Hospital, Ma including demographics (age, gender, and nationality), severity (i.e., ICU admission), length of hospital stay, mortality, and laboratory parameters. Results We observed an overall mortality rate of 10.2% (338 of 3,307 patients). The mortality rate was significantly higher in males (n=210; 62.1%) and patients aged more than 70 years (n=91; 26.9%). Patients with blood group O comprised 131 (29%) of the 338 non-survivors, followed by those with A (n=85; 25.1%) and B groups (n=79; 23.4%). The mortality rate among ICU patients was 63.3% (n=214). Furthermore, the following laboratory findings showed abnormal mean values in terms of severity and mortality in COVID-19 patients: hemoglobin (HB) concentration, white blood cell (WBC) count, lymphocyte count (LC), C-reactive protein (CRP), creatinine (CREA), and uric acid (UA) levels. Conclusions Old age, male gender, and certain laboratory findings have a critical role in the severity and mortality risk in COVID-19 patients. There was no significant association between blood type and the severity and mortality of COVID-19. Continuous monitoring based on these findings may be essential to managing COVID-19 patients.

Abstract:Genome instability is a hallmark of most human cancers. Although a mutator phenotype is not required for tumorigenesis, it can foster mutations that promote tumor progression. Indeed, several inherited cancer-prone syndromes are due to mutations in DNA repair pathways. However, sporadic tumors are usually proficient in DNA repair, making it unlikely that unrepaired lesions are a major source of genome instability in sporadic cancers. A decade ago, I argued in another CSHL Press publication that a "collapse in telomere function can explain a significant portion of the genetic instability in tumors" (de Lange 1995). Since that time, the structure of mammalian telomeres has been analyzed, the consequences of telomere dysfunction have been determined, a mouse model for cancer-relevant aspects of telomere biology has been developed, and the nature and magnitude of cancer genome rearrangements have been revealed. In light of these developments, this is an opportune time to revisit the conjecture that telomere dysfunction contributes to genome instability in human cancer.

Abstract:Background: Identifying prognosticators/predictors of COVID-19 severity is the principal focus for early prediction and effective management of the disease in a time-bound and cost-effective manner. We aimed to evaluate COVID-19 severity-dependent alteration in inflammatory and coagulopathy biomarkers. Methods: A hospital-dependent retrospective observational study (total: n = 377; male, n = 213; and female, n = 164 participants) was undertaken. COVID-19 exposure was assessed by performing real-time PCR on nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs. Descriptive and inferential statistics were applied for both continuous and categorical variables using Rstudio-version-4.0.2. Pearson correlation and regression were executed with a cut-off of p < 0.05 for evaluating significance. Data representation by R-packages and ggplot2. Results: A significant variation in the mean ± SD (highly-sever (HS)/moderately severe (MS)) of CRP (HS/MS: 102.4 ± 22.9/21.3 ± 6.9, p-value < 0.001), D-dimer (HS/MS: 661.1 ± 80.6/348.7 ± 42.9, p-value < 0.001), and ferritin (HS/MS: 875.8 ± 126.8/593.4 ± 67.3, p-value < 0.001) were observed. Thrombocytopenia, high PT, and PTT exhibited an association with the HS individuals (p < 0.001). CRP was correlated with neutrophil (r = 0.77), ferritin (r = 0.74), and WBC (r = 0.8). D-dimer correlated with platelets (r = −0.82), PT (r = 0.22), and PTT (r = 0.37). The adjusted odds ratios (Ad-OR) of CRP, ferritin, D-dimer, platelet, PT, and PTT for HS compared to MS were 1.30 (95% CI −1.137, 1.50; p < 0.001), 1.048 (95% CI −1.03, 1.066; p 0.05), −0.813 (95% CI −0.734, 0.899, p < 0.001), 1.347 (95% CI −1.15, 1.57, p < 0.001), and 1.234 (95% CI −1.16, 1.314, p < 0.001), respectively. Conclusion: SARS-CoV-2 caused alterations in vital laboratory parameters and raised ferritin, CRP, and D-dimer presented an association with disease severity at a significant level.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a viral respiratory disease that first emerged in China in December 2019 and quickly spread worldwide. As the prevalence of COVID-19 increases, radiological examination is becoming an essential diagnostic tool for identifying and managing the disease's progression. Therefore, we aimed to identify the chest imaging features and clinical characteristics of patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 in Saudi Arabia. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this retrospective study, data of laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients were collected from 4 hospitals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Their common clinical characteristics, as well as imaging features of chest X-rays and computed tomography (CT) images, were analyzed. RESULTS A total of 297 patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 who underwent chest imaging were investigated in this study. Of these patients, 77.9% were male and 22.2% were female. Their mean age was 48 years old. The most common clinical symptoms were fever (187 patients; 63%) and cough (174 patients; 58.6%). The predominant descriptive chest imaging findings were ground-glass opacities and consolidation. Locations of abnormalities were bilateral, mainly distributed peripherally, in the lower lung zones, and in the middle lung zones. CONCLUSIONS This study provides an understanding of the most common clinical and radiological features of patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 in Saudi Arabia. The majority of COVID-19 patients in our study cohort had either stable or worse progression of lung lesions during follow-ups; thus, they presented moderate disease cases. Elderly males were more affected by COVID-19 than females, with fever and cough being the most common clinical symptoms.

Abstract:Context: The possible associations between the different blood groups and clinical factors with COVID-19 infection among patients in Makkah city. Objective: To investigate the relationship between ABO blood groups and COVID-19 infection in patients who were tested positive and to elucidate the most common ABO blood groups with a higher infectivity of COVID-19 and disease association. Materials and methods: This was an observational cross-sectional study that included COVID-19 patients diagnosed with PCR and who were hospitalized in Al-Noor Specialist Hospital (Makkah) during the period between March to November 2020. The ABO and Rhesus blood groups alongside the clinical characteristics were determined and retrieved from medical records and HESN of the Ministry of Health of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Results: The overall confirmed COVID-19 cases included in this study were 1,583 patients who underwent positive PCR testing between March and November 2020. The frequencies of blood groups were as follows: group O+ (37%), group A+ (29.2%), group B+ (22.6%), group AB+ (5.1%), group O- (2.8%), group B- (1.8%), group A- (1.1%), and group AB- (0.4%). However, no significant correlations were observed for ABO groups and Rh types with the severity of COVID-19 illness. Conversely, signs and symptoms of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), pneumonia, and respiratory failure symptoms, alongside a history of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, chronic kidney diseases, and congestive heart failure significantly increased the risk of death from COVID-19 infection. Moreover, the rates of fever, cough, and asthma were markedly lower in the deceased group compared with the recovered group of patients. Conclusion: The association between the different blood groups with the prevalence and mortality of COVID-19 among infected patients has yet to be elucidated as we found no significant differences in the observed versus expected distribution of ABO phenotypes among the included cases. The prevalence of RDS, pneumonia, and respiratory failure was found higher among hospitalized COVID-19 patients in the deceased group. However, other factors such as fever, cough, and asthma appeared to be more significantly lower than in the recovered group.

Abstract:Background: The current study is a retrospective study designed to evaluate changes in complete blood count and coagulation parameters in adult coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients at a prominent Saudi tertiary center to predict disease severity and mortality. Methods: The cohort consisted of 74 800 adult patients divided into four groups based on a COVID-19 test and the patient's sex: 35 985 in the female negative COVID-19 group, 23 278 in the male negative COVID-19 group, 8846 in the female positive COVID-19 group and 6691 in the male positive COVID-19 group. Results: Patients with COVID-19 demonstrated decreased white blood cell counts and increased red blood cell counts. Also, COVID-19-positive participants exhibited more prolonged partial thromboplastin time and lower D-dimer levels than those of COVID-19-negative subjects (p<0.05). The study also revealed gender-dependent impacts on platelet counts, implying a possible relationship with the greater infection mortality rate in men than in women (p<0.001). In addition, the study found a link between changes in coagulation test results and death in COVID-19 patients (p<0.001). The evidence regarding the effects of COVID-19 on blood cell counts and coagulation, on the other hand, is conflicting, most likely due to variances in study populations and the timing of testing postinfection. Conclusions: According to the findings, COVID-19-related alterations in blood cell count and clotting ability may be risk factors for death.

Abstract:Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), has ravaged millions of lives globally due to its severe symptoms and associated complications, especially among immunocompromised patients. [ 1 ] On June 19, 2023, about 87,159,156 cases and 6431,700 deaths due to COVID-19 have been reported worldwide. [ 2 ] Thus, all nations impacted by this viral infection have experienced the aftermath as a consequence. Nevertheless, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) will be the main focus area for this study, which till date has reported about 810,394 incidences and 9255 deaths (June 19, 2023). [ 2 , 3 ] Victims of this pandemic often experience mild symptoms including fever, cough, fatigue, and loss of smell and taste. [ 4 ] In addition, sore throat, headache, diarrhea or eye irritation or pain were also reported as clinical signs of COVID-19. [ 5 ] However, in severe cases, patients may experience serious chest pain, loss of mobility, and shortness of breath (hypoxia). [ 4 ] Nonetheless, a previous study in Saudi Arabia reported that old age, being a male, the presence of comorbidities, chronic respiratory diseases and cardiovascular illness are independent risk factors that heighten the severity of COVID-19 cases and its associated complications and deaths. [ 6 ] Thus, individuals with underlying medical conditions such as obesity, diabetes, stroke, asthma, and chronic kidney diseases are at a higher risk of being seriously ill (severe symptoms and complications), hospitalized, and dead when infected by SARS-CoV-2. [ 7 ]

Abstract:BackgroundMany survivors of COVID-19 have developed symptoms and diseases similar to those observed after severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). Therefore, this study aimed to characterize the symptoms that appear after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection has been eradicated and to determine their relationship with COVID-19 severity.MethodsThis multicenter, retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in all eligible confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection from Saudi Arabia. Study participants were randomly selected using computerized random sampling from a population of 314,821 patients. Descriptive statistics were used to describe baseline demographic data and clinical characteristics. Categorical variables were presented as counts and percentages, while continuous variables were presented as means and standard deviations.ResultsApproximately 70% of patients were found to have five or fewer symptoms simultaneously. Late symptoms (in the ongoing symptomatic COVID-19) occurred in 225 (22·5%) patients with the most common late symptoms being loss of smell, loss of taste, fatigue, shortness of breath, and cough (52·4%, 31·1%, 11·5%, 10·2%, and 8·9% of patients with late symptoms, respectively). We also found that the presence of acute symptoms of COVID-19 and admission to the hospital were significant independent predictors of the post-COVID-19 condition.ConclusionSaudi patients with COVID-19 develop a wide range of symptoms, similar to those observed and reported in other countries. The loss of smell, the loss of taste, shortness of breath, and fatigue were the main persistent symptoms. Regular follow-up of COVID-19 survivors is highly recommended to minimize the burden of the post-acute COVID-19 condition and improve the quality of life of patients.

Hematological Parameters and Comorbidities in COVID-19: Insights into Clinical Profiles and Outcome Predictors

Abstract:Background: The global pandemic, known as the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome, coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), poses a significant threat, particularly to individuals with comorbidities such as hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes, HIV, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer. Methods: This descriptive retrospective study investigates the impact of comorbidities on COVID-19-positive patients. The study includes individuals that were tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 via polymerase chain reaction at the Security Forces Hospital, Makkah, KSA, between February, 2022, and June, 2022. A total of 208 patients (107 males, 101 females) were examined, and the laboratory results revealed normal parameters. Results: An analysis indicates that 86.5% of the patients were discharged, 2.9% remained hospitalized, and 10.6% succumbed to the disease, indicating a 10.6% mortality rate among comorbid COVID-19-positive patients. Notably, the study identifies specific comorbidities (chronic kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, hypertension) and changes in laboratory parameters (red blood cells, hemoglobin, C-reactive protein, white blood cells, ferritin, D-dimer, ALT, troponin, LDH, neutrophils) associated with ICU admission during hospitalization. Conclusions: This study underscores the critical impact of comorbidities, such as chronic kidney disease, diabetes, and hypertension, on the clinical outcomes of COVID-19-positive patients. The identification of specific laboratory parameters linked with ICU admission provides valuable insights for risk stratification and tailored management strategies.

Abstract:World is under pandemic stress due to an increased mortality rate owing to the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2 or 2019-nCoV). At the dawn of the pandemic though, severe forms of coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) are complicated by thromboembolism. As of May 16, 2022, there have been 519,105,112 confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported to World Health Organization guidelines, with 6266,324 fatalities. 11,660,363,722 vaccine doses had been delivered as of May 14, 2022. [ 1 ] Mortality rates in the KSA was around 1.7% comparatively lower than in other countries due to strict precautionary measures and effective lockdown implemented during the outbreak. Whilst the effective measures, the developed countries with the best healthcare facilities have even complied with the unprecedented damage and mortality caused by COVID-19. The symptoms of patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 range from minimal signs to severe respiratory failure with multiple organ failure. [ 2 ] COVID-19 patients may be asymptomatic. Fever, dry cough, and shortness of breath are common symptoms. Besides these, patients suffer from gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, diarrhea, and neurological symptoms such as anosmia, hyposmia, and dysgeusia. [ 3 ] Multiorgan complications in SARS-CoV-2 patients include but are not limited to cardiac injury, acute respiratory distress syndrome, arrhythmias, thromboses, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), infarcts, and secondary infections been studied in these patients. Abstract:A pandemic-scale outbreak of the newly discovered coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), fast-spreading viral pneumonia, is currently occurring. Due to the disease's overall vulnerability, different age groups have different clinical characteristics and test findings. The purpose of this study was to describe the COVID-19 laboratory results in various age and sex groups. Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for SARS-2 RNA was used in the study, which had 1100 individuals with typical cold symptoms. It was reported that 660 of these cases tested positive for the test, while 440 tested negative, therefore all cases underwent laboratory testing. Our research revealed that males had higher COVID-19 positivity than females (215/660; 67.4%), with males scoring 445/660; 32.6%). Age does not statistically differ between COVID-19 positive and negative cases. Hematological parameters in blood cells revealed that Lymphocytes differ significantly between COVID-19-infected and uninfected patients as these cells decline in the presence of COVID-19 infection. There are no significant differences in hemoglobin (Hgb percent), red blood cells (RBCs), total white blood cells (WBCS), basophils, neutrophils, monocytes, and eosinophils, as well as blood platelets (PLTS). Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is unimportant, whereas COVID-19 infection increases ferritin and C-reactive proteins.
Impact of vaccination on morbidity and mortality in adults hospitalized with COVID-19 during the omicron wave in the Jazan Region, Saudi Arabia

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) vaccination on morbidity and mortality in adults hospitalized with COVID-19 during the omicron wave in the Jazan Region, Saudi Arabia.METHODS: A 6-month record-based historical prospective study enrolled COVID-19 adult patients admitted between January and June 2022. Individuals were classified into 3 groups according to their immunity status (immunized, partially immunized, and not immunized). Death, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and mechanical ventilation were identified as the primary outcomes, collectively referred to as "serious outcomes". On the other hand, the length of hospital stays longer than 5 days was categorized as a secondary outcome. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate independent factors and the relationship between the outcomes and vaccination status.RESULTS: Among the 634 COVID-19 patients admitted to Jazan hospitals, 46.4% were fully immunized, 19.7% were partially immunized, and 33.9% were not immunized. Not being immunized was significantly associated with ICU admission (odds ratio [OR]=1.91, 95% confidence interval [CI]: [1.17-3.11]; p=0.009), mechanical ventilation (OR=2.11, 95% CI: [1.25-3.56]; p=0.005), increased length of hospital stays (OR=1.79, 95% CI: [1.24-2.59]; p=0.002), and death (OR=3.03, 95% CI: [1.85-4.98]; p<0.001).CONCLUSION: Our study underscores the importance of a comprehensive approach for managing COVID-19 patients that includes vaccination against the disease.

Abstract:The COVID-19 epidemic has strained healthcare systems globally. Effective patient care and public health policies need understanding COVID-19 mortality variables. This research examines how demographics, comorbidities, cytokine parameters, and hospitalization time affect COVID-19 mortality. The research retrospectively examined 100 Iraqi COVID-19 patients in 2021. Data from Medical City Hospital and Al-Kadhimiya Hospital were analyzed using SPSS and Excel. Study participants were of various ages and genders. The 2021 COVID-19 death rate was 22%, depending on age, gender, and comorbidities. Out of persons aged ≤30 (n=9), 22.2% died from the illness. In the 31-40 age range (n=24), 25.0% died. The 41-50 age group (n=15) had a 40.0% death rate. In the 51-60 age range (n=27), 25.9% died. The 61-70 age group (n=18) had a 5.6% death rate. No one over 70 (n=7) died. The age of patients, but not gender, are significantly associated with mortality. Among the parameters analyzed, ferritin, D-dimer, lymphocytes, and the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) levels showed significant differences between the deceased and alive groups (p-value <0.05). Comorbidity analysis demonstrated that cardiovascular diseases, malignancy, kidney diseases, and bacterial infections were significantly associated with higher mortality rates in COVID-19 patients, while liver disease, diabetes mellitus (DM), and hypertension (HT) did not show significant associations. IL6, IL10, and IL12 cytokines levels differed significantly between died and surviving patients. Elevated levels of these interleukins were associated with increased mortality risk, while TNF-a levels showed no significant difference.

Abstract:Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), first identified in Wuhan, China, has resulted within the coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic that has spread to 210 countries worldwide. At the time of scripting this review, 76,726 people had been infected with and 411 died from SARS-CoV-2 in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. COVID-19 has deeply impacted the lives of millions globally, either directly or as a results of the preventive measures instituted to regulate the spread of the disease. Research groups worldwide are working hard to develop sensitive and specific diagnostic tools and effective vaccines. This review aimed to supply relevant COVID19 research data obtained from a literature review. Conclusion: We believe that our study makes significant contributions to the literature because it provides a condensed, authoritative presentation of the numerous clinical presentations, diagnoses, treatments, and patient management strategies for COVID-19. It also as reports on this COVID-19 situation in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Mortality and Survival Analysis in COVID-19 Patients: Hematological and Biochemical Study

Abstract:Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV-2) that causes novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) interacts with the receptor (angiotensin-converting enzyme) on the lung epithelial cells and leads to rapid deterioration of human health if no care is provided, hence risk identification of the case severity is important. The objective of the present study is to analyze the relationship between blood parameters and the severity, survival, and mortality of COVID-19 patients based on the hematological and biochemical abnormalities associated with Iraqi COVID-19 patients. A prospective multicenter observational study has been done on a total of 103 patients admitted to different hospitals between November 1, 2021, and April 1, 2022. Among these 30 (29.1%) patients died, 81% died within two weeks of admission to the hospital, and 73 patients (71.9%) survived. An independent sample t-test revealed a significant difference in the tests including AST, ALT, D-dimer, urea, creatinine, and chloride ion between the dead and survived patients, while there was a non-significant difference when these parameters were compared (age, BMI, CPR, PT, INR, APTT, WBC, LYM, GRA, HGB, RBC, ESR, Creatinine, Na and K ions). Crosstab’s study showed that most death (80%) were at ages >60 years, 53.3% of the deaths were having normal BMI and only 10% were obese. Three models for logistic regression were performed to test if the available data set is more effective than the null hypothesis, all three tests yield a similar conclusion that the available data can be used to check the risk factors in COVID-19 patients.
Prognostic value of ANDC score and CRP-derived inflammatory markers in hospitalized adult patients with COVID-19

Abstract:Background: SARS-CoV-2 has been a causative agent of severe acute respiratory syndrome since last 2019. Early diagnosis of severe cases is crucial to decrease a patient's hospital stay and death risk. severity and prognosis Patients and Methods: This retrospective study included COVID-19 patient underwent chest computed tomography scan and a battery of laboratory tests, including measurements of leukocytes, neutrophils, lymphocytes, lactic dehydrogenase, creatinine level, ferritin, D-dimer, albumin, and C-reactive protein. In addition, the CRP to lymphocyte ratio (CLR), CRP to albumin ratio (CAR), CRP to platelet ratio (CPR) and the ANDC score. Patients' clinical outcomes including length of hospital stays (LOS) and mortality were recorded. Results: Out of 98 patients, 51 patients had passed away. There was a statistically significant difference between survivors and non-survivors regarding age, TLC, ANC, NLR, D-Dimer, and albumin. Moreover, a highly statistically significant difference regarding CRP levels, CAR, CPR, CLR, and ANDC was noted. Serum CRP level > 123 ng/ml, CAR > 36.77, CPR level > 462, and CLR > 84 had sensitivity; (64.71 %, 66.6 %, 72.5 %, and 76.4 %, respectively) and specificity; (85.1 %, 78.7 %, 72.3 %, and 72.3 % respectively) in mortality prediction. Meanwhile, the ANDC score was the most sensitive indicator (88.2 %) for mortality outcome. Multivariable regression analysis revealed that aging, CPR, and ANDC level were independently associated with mortality with H.R. [1.025 (1.002–1.050); 2.338 (1.189–4.599) and 2.896 (1.191–7.044)] Conclusion: The value of the ANDC score and CRP-derived inflammatory indicators correlate with the likelihood of mortality, so the efficacy of these metrics might assist in urgent early dialogues about treatment escalation.

Abstract:In developing countries, classroom lessons are theoretical and concepts are sometimes not entirely understood within the allocated lesson time for students. There is therefore a gap between classroom lessons and students often have to supplement what is taught in class outside the classroom. A study was conducted in Zimbabwe, which uses the same textbooks countrywide, to identify the prevalent issues of traditional learning challenges that can potentially be solved by using the mobile phone. Results show that high school students have mobile phones and can adopt mobile learning practices. Results also suggest a need for mechanisms that support student-centered learning in the construction of knowledge for better understanding of difficult concepts outside the classroom.
Evaluation of deciduous-tooth wear in children living in the middle ages.

Abstract:PURPOSE To investigate the importance and range of tooth wear in deciduous teeth from the 14th century based on the examination of child skeletons from the Cedynia cemetery in Poland. As mechanical wear was widespread in early human populations, this study recorded symptoms of attrition and abrasion (facets and scoops), relating them to possible causative factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study material comprised 84 child skulls (458 teeth) categorised into two age groups: 1. up to 7 years; 2. from 8 to 14 years. The degree of tooth wear was determined on the basis of a modified Smith and Knight's classification. Significant differences between examined features were determined by the chi-square and Fisher Freeman Halton non-parametric tests with the significance level set al p < 0.05. RESULTS Statistically significant differences between age groups in the canines and molars were found (p < 0.05). More advanced wear of deciduous teeth was noticed in the older group. There was no difference in distribution of tooth wear between the maxilla and the mandible. CONCLUSION Examination of children's dentition showed that wear of deciduous teeth rose with the age of individuals, which agrees with the referenced literature data. This study confirms the relationship between dietary patterns and tooth wear and corroborates a role of tooth wear in determining developmental age and growth of the masticatory system.
Mental Health of COVID-19 Patients-A Cross-Sectional Survey in Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Background: This study aims to investigate the mental health of COVID-19 patients in Saudi Arabia. Method: A cross-sectional study was carried out targeting confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Saudi Arabia. Due to travel and time constraints as well as the accessibility of patients, cases were included from East Jeddah Hospital, King Abdulaziz Hospital, and the Oncology Center in Jeddah. The data were collected using a predesigned self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire addressed COVID-19 cases, personal data, medical history, smoking, traveling abroad, and work-related conditions. Additionally, data regarding contact level with COVID-19 cases were considered. The mental health statuses of the patients were assessed using a validated Arabic version of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HAD) scale. The study included 261 COVID-19 patients whose ages ranged from 18 to 65 years. Results: The survey findings revealed that 13% of COVID-19 patients had a borderline level of anxiety, 26.8% were considered anxiety cases, while 60.2% were normal. The findings also revealed that 29.9% had a borderline level of depression, 18.4% were considered depression cases, while 51.7% were normal. Conclusions: This study concluded that COVID-19 patients experience anxiety and depression, and as the COVID-19 epidemic continues to spread, the results of the study are particularly useful in developing a strategy to psychologically support COVID-19 patients.
