Abstract:Wearable sensors for tracking human body motion are being increasingly applied in medical systems and are considered important components of human–machine interfaces. This study proposes a flexible sandwich-like capacitive pressure sensor that consists of carbon nanotube–polydimethylsiloxane (CNT–PDMS) composite electrodes and a porous polymer dielectric layer.CNT yarn and polymer materials help fabricate a pressure sensor without complex patterns, easily and quickly. The dielectric layer is made of a porous polymer to improve the sensor sensitivity. The high porosity of the dielectric layer increases its deformation under pressure and enhances the sensitivity (to approximately 5.6 kPa−1 (%)) even under low pressures (< 5 kPa). The sensitivity of the sensor varies according to the density of porosity and dielectric permittivity of the dielectric layer.Owing to the high porosity of the dielectric layer and flexibility of the CNT yarn, the capacitive pressure sensor proposed in this study exhibits good performance in detecting even a slight change in stimulus. The proposed pressure sensor can be applied in wearable applications such as human-friendly interfaces and sensitive electronic skins.

Abstract:Wearable pressure sensors have attracted widespread attention in recent years because of their great potential in human healthcare applications such as physiological signals monitoring. A desirable pressure sensor should possess the advantages of high sensitivity, a simple manufacturing process, and good stability. Here, we present a highly sensitive, simply fabricated wearable resistive pressure sensor based on three-dimensional microstructured carbon nanowalls (CNWs) embedded in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate. The method of using unpolished silicon wafers as templates provides an easy approach to fabricate the irregular microstructure of CNWs/PDMS electrodes, which plays a significant role in increasing the sensitivity and stability of resistive pressure sensors. The sensitivity of the CNWs/PDMS pressure sensor with irregular microstructures is as high as 6.64 kPa−1 in the low-pressure regime, and remains fairly high (0.15 kPa−1) in the high-pressure regime (~10 kPa). Both the relatively short response time of ~30 ms and good reproducibility over 1000 cycles of pressure loading and unloading tests illustrate the high performance of the proposed device. Our pressure sensor exhibits a superior minimal limit of detection of 0.6 Pa, which shows promising potential in detecting human physiological signals such as heart rate. Moreover, it can be turned into an 8 × 8 pixels array to map spatial pressure distribution and realize array sensing imaging.

Abstract:The advancement of wearable tactile sensors that involves with high sensitivity under ultra-low pressures is crucial for varieties of human-machine interactive applications, like smart phones, healthcare monitoring, and electronic skins. Here in this paper, a soft capacitive tactile sensing array is introduced based on hierarchically porous multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite, which leads to sensitivity improvement attributing to a synergistic effect of the hierarchically porous elastomer and conductive MWCNTs supplements. The proposed device exhibits superior pressure-sensing performances, with high sensitivity (3.58 kPa-1) under small mechanical stimuli (<80 Pa), broad measuring range (0-265 kPa), fast response time (<45 ms), good repeatability, minimum limit of detection (<10 Pa), as well as low-hysteresis, allowing efficient sensing of pressure from all types of sources, from vulnerable signals such as human breathing, artery and venous pulses, and soft human finger touch to possible brutal variations such as sudden change of object weight or prompt collide. Moreover, extensive body attached experiments confirm that the soft tactile sensing array is fully human compatible and capable for a variety of human-machine interfaces and health monitoring applications.

Abstract:Researchers are showing an increasing interest in high-performance flexible pressure sensors owing to their potential uses in wearable electronics, bionic skin, and human–machine interactions, etc. However, the vast majority of these flexible pressure sensors require extensive nano-architectural design, which both complicates their manufacturing and is time-consuming. Thus, a low-cost technology which can be applied on a large scale is highly desirable for the manufacture of flexible pressure-sensitive materials that have a high sensitivity over a wide range of pressures. This work is based on the use of a three-dimensional elastic porous carbon nanotubes (CNTs) sponge as the conductive layer to fabricate a novel flexible piezoresistive sensor. The synthesis of a CNTs sponge was achieved by chemical vapor deposition, the basic underlying principle governing the sensing behavior of the CNTs sponge-based pressure sensor and was illustrated by employing in situ scanning electron microscopy. The CNTs sponge-based sensor has a quick response time of ~105 ms, a high sensitivity extending across a broad pressure range (less than 10 kPa for 809 kPa−1) and possesses an outstanding permanence over 4000 cycles. Furthermore, a 16-pixel wireless sensor system was designed and a series of applications have been demonstrated. Its potential applications in the visualizing pressure distribution and an example of human–machine communication were also demonstrated.

Abstract:In recent times, polymer-based flexible pressure sensors have been attracting a lot of attention because of their various applications. A highly sensitive and flexible sensor is suggested, capable of being attached to the human body, based on a three-dimensional dielectric elastomeric structure of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and microsphere composite. This sensor has maximal porosity due to macropores created by sacrificial layer grains and micropores generated by microspheres pre-mixed with PDMS, allowing it to operate at a wider pressure range (~150 kPa) while maintaining a sensitivity (of 0.124 kPa−1 in a range of 0~15 kPa) better than in previous studies. The maximized pores can cause deformation in the structure, allowing for the detection of small changes in pressure. In addition to exhibiting a fast rise time (~167 ms) and fall time (~117 ms), as well as excellent reproducibility, the fabricated pressure sensor exhibits reliability in its response to repeated mechanical stimuli (2.5 kPa, 1000 cycles). As an application, we develop a wearable device for monitoring repeated tiny motions, such as the pulse on the human neck and swallowing at the Adam’s apple. This sensory device is also used to detect movements in the index finger and to monitor an insole system in real-time.

Abstract:Abstract Piezoresistive sensor is an essential component of wearable electronics that can detect resistance changes when pressure is applied. An effective approach to enhance its performance is to make micro-structured device. In this paper, porous carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are formed by blue laser (BL) exposure on CNTs layer, which increases its thickness ~4 times compared to the as-deposited layer. Then, the pressure sensor is fabricated by spin coating of styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS) elastomer on the porous CNTs layer. A 1.32 μm thick pressure sensor exhibits a high sensitivity of 6.54 x 106 kPa-1, a wide sensing range of 278 Pa ~ 40 kPa, and fast response/recovery times of 900/760 μs, respectively. The stability of the pressure sensor is demonstrated by repeated loading and unloading of 20 kPa for 3600 cycles. The stretchable pressure sensor was also demonstrated using lateral CNT electrodes on SEBS surface, exhibiting stable pressure performance up to 20% stretching. Finally, a 32 x 32 active-matrix pressure sensor array is demonstrated consisting of amorphous InGaZnO4 thin-film transistor (TFT) backplane for pressure mapping and real-time monitoring. The sensor array demonstrates dynamic area touch by pen writing with ~1 cm/s speed.

Abstract:We developed a simple, low-cost process to fabricate a flexible pressure sensor with linear sensitivity by using a porous carbon nanotube (CNT)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite structure (CPCS). The working principle of this pressure sensor is based on the change in electrical resistance caused by the contact/non-contact of the CNT tip on the surface of the pores under pressure. The mechanical and electrical properties of the CPCSs could be quantitatively controlled by adjusting the concentration of CNTs. The fabricated flexible pressure sensor showed linear sensitivity and excellent performance with regard to repeatability, hysteresis, and reliability. Furthermore, we showed that the sensor could be applied for human motion detection, even when attached to curved surfaces.

Abstract:Ultrathin flexible pressure sensors are highly desirable for human physiological signal monitoring due to their portability and ability to conform to the body. However, existing ultrathin pressure sensors face challenges in balancing the sensitivity and their range. A spatial-dimensionally constrained strategy was proposed to construct an ultrathin active layer. In detail, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with an average length of ∼1.3 μm were intentionally spin-coated into a thin thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) film with a thickness of 1.5 μm. By doing so, a quasi-2D MWCNTs conductive network is constructed, which enabled the sensor to have ultrahigh sensitivity of 27.04 kPa −1 , a wide liner detection range of 0.2–24 kPa, ultrafast response time of 40 ms and a recovery time of 10 ms, and high durability in 1500 cycles under 0.2 kPa with loading/unloading frequency of 2 Hz. Thanks to this superior performance, the ultrathin pressure sensor can be used to monitor human movement and physiological signals, including finger touch, finger bending, wrist bending, and deep breathing. Moreover, the sensor can be attached to the side wall of the tip of the renal ureteroscope, allowing for the monitoring of renal pelvic pressure. Therefore, this spatial-dimensionally constrained strategy will open up a new way to fabricate highly sensitive ultrathin pressure sensors and have great application prospects in health monitoring.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors have attracted great attention due to their potential in the wearable devices market and in particular in human-machine interactive interfaces. Pressure sensors with high sensitivity, wide measurement range, and low-cost are now highly desired for such practical applications. In the present investigation, an ultrasensitive pressure sensor with wide measurement range has been successfully fabricated. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) (uniformly sprayed on the surface of paper) comprise the sensitivity material, while lithographed interdigital electrodes comprise the substrate. Due to the synergistic effects of CNT's high specific surface area, paper's porous structure, interdigital electrodes' efficient contact with CNT, our pressure sensor realizes a wide measurement range from 0 to 140 kPa and exhibits excellent stability through 15,000 cycles of testing. For the paper-based CNT film/interdigitated structure (PCI) pressure sensor, the connection area between the sensitive material and interdigital electrodes dominates in the low-pressure region, while internal change within the sensitive materials plays the leading role in the high-pressure region. Additionally, the PCI pressure sensor not only displays a high sensitivity of 2.72 kPa−1 (up to 35 kPa) but also can detect low pressures, such as that exerted by a resting mung bean (about 8 Pa). When attached to the surface of a human body, the pressure sensor can monitor physiological signals, such as wrist movement, pulse beats, or movement of throat muscles. Furthermore, the pressure sensor array can identify the spatial pressure distribution, with promising applications in human-machine interactive interfaces.

Abstract:The multistage structure which for carbon nanotubes/carbon cloth endows flexible piezoresistive pressure sensor wide working range and high sensitivity. The tactile sensor in this work exhibits an ultrahigh sensitivity and very low detection limit. The proposal multistage structure also can be used as the active layer for bending monitor. Human–robot interaction has become increasingly important due to technological advances in robotics. The tactile sensation range of humans ranges from detecting the touch of a hair (≈0.6 Pa) to the touch of a finger (<10 kPa). Therefore, flexible pressure sensors with high sensitivity and a suitable pressure response range are vital to human–robot interaction. However, it is difficult to attain both sensitivity and a suitable pressure response in one device. This study proposes and prepares a flexible piezoresistive pressure sensor based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/carbon cloth (CC). The high performance of the sensor stems from the interlocked CNTs structure and the multistage contact at different pressures. The interlocked CNT structure endows the sensor with a low detection limit (≈0.15 Pa) and high sensitivity (120 kPa−1) in the pressure range (0–0.5 kPa). The flexible pressure sensor with an interlocked structure has significant potential as a wearable biosensor for healthcare applications. Furthermore, the sensor facilitates grasping soft objects due to high tactile sensitivity. In addition, the CNTs/CC‐based sensor can also be used as a bending sensor to develop a hand grasping model. Therefore, the proposed CNTs/CC‐based sensor is well suited for human–machine interaction and improving the tactile perception of robots.

Abstract:The development of highly sensitive pressure sensors with a low-cost and facile fabrication technique is desirable for electronic skins and wearable sensing devices. Here a low-cost and facile fabrication strategy to obtain multiscale-structured elastomeric electrodes and a highly sensitive and robust flexible pressure sensor is presented. The principles of spontaneous buckle formation of the PDMS surface and the embedding of silver nanowires are used to fabricate the multiscale-structured elastomeric electrode. By laminating the multiscale-structured elastomeric electrode onto the dielectric layer/bottom electrode template, the pressure sensor can be obtained. The pressure sensor is based on the capacitive sensing mechanism and shows high sensitivity (>3.8 kPa(-1)), fast response and relaxation time (<150 ms), high bending stability and high cycle stability. The fabrication process can be easily scaled up to produce pressure sensor arrays and they can detect the spatial distribution of the applied pressure. It is also demonstrated that the fingertip pressure sensing device can sense the pressure distribution of each finger, when grabbing an object.

Abstract:The increasing interest in wearable devices and healthcare has sparked significant advancements in the development of flexible sensors for various applications. In this study, we present the fabrication and characterization of a flexible pressure sensor utilizing a three-dimensional structure of pressure sensitive material, fabricated through a layer-by-layer process. The aim of this research is to investigate the electrical response characteristics of the sensor based on the number of layers in the pressure sensitive material, both under static and dynamic pressure conditions. The pressure sensitive material, consisting of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) dispersed in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), exhibits positive piezo-resistive properties. The flexible pressure sensor was fabricated using direct ink writing (DIW) technology, which enables precise control over the arrangement of the material. We explored the influence of layer configurations on the sensor's initial resistance and electrical resistance changes by varying the number of layers. Our experiments demonstrated a clear trend, indicating that as the number of layers increased, both the initial resistance and electrical resistance change decreased. This behavior can be attributed to the enhanced connectivity among carbon nanotubes within the material, resulting in reduced overall resistance. In addition to static pressure testing, we conducted dynamic pressure experiments to assess the sensor's response under rapidly changing pressure conditions. Our findings suggest that by manipulating the number of layers in the pressure-sensitive material, the sensor's sensitivity and detection range can be tailored to suit specific applications. This approach offers a flexible and unified method for fabricating sensors with diverse response behaviors within a single manufacturing process.

Abstract:Elastic pressure sensors play a crucial role in the digital economy, such as in health care systems and human–machine interfacing. However, the low sensitivity of these sensors restricts their further development and wider application prospects. This issue can be resolved by introducing microstructures in flexible pressure-sensitive materials as a common method to improve their sensitivity. However, complex processes limit such strategies. Herein, a cost-effective and simple process was developed for manufacturing surface microstructures of flexible pressure-sensitive films. The strategy involved the combination of MXene–single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) with mass-produced Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microspheres to form advanced microstructures. Next, the conductive silica gel films with pitted microstructures were obtained through a 3D-printed mold as flexible electrodes, and assembled into flexible resistive pressure sensors. The sensor exhibited a sensitivity reaching 2.6 kPa−1 with a short response time of 56 ms and a detection limit of 5.1 Pa. The sensor also displayed good cyclic stability and time stability, offering promising features for human health monitoring applications.

Abstract:Highly sensitive and flexible components are essential for applications in wearable electronics. Using low‐cost and rapid prototyping methods, piezoresistive pressure sensors are fabricated using shrink‐film, a shape memory polymer that retracts upon heat, to introduce wrinkling in carbon nanotube thin films, which improves both elasticity and pressure sensitivity. The wrinkles not only provide strain relief, but it also improves pressure sensitivity by 12 800 fold with a response time of less than 20 ms. The improved sensitivity is due to the surface roughness of the wrinkles. When two wrinkled electrodes are coupled together, the number of electrical contact points changes upon actuation thereby changing the electrical resistivity. This study then demonstrates wearable applications, such as pulsatile blood flow monitoring and voice detection using these sensitive pressure sensors. Leveraging the retraction of a shape memory polymer platform, carbon nanotubes form highly entangled and densified nano/microwrinkles. Transferring these wrinkles into soft materials via a lift‐off technique, highly sensitive flexible and conformal pressure sensors are developed for monitoring human physiological signals.

Abstract:With the fast development of electronic skin, there is a great demand for wearable sensing devices. Herein, a piezoresistive sensor has been fabricated comprising a conductive film of Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-carbon nanotubes (CNTs) sandwiched by two protection films of PDMS. A simple and low-cost manufacturing method has been proposed to wrap CNTs inside the flexible PDMS to obtain a soft sensor with excellent conductivity, high sensitivity, and fast response to various pressures. Additionally, films with different percentages of CNTs were compared. The results show that the film with 7% CNTs has higher conductivity and sensitivity. Moreover, the surface morphologies and microstructures of the superior PDMS-CNTs film were studied by scanning electron microscope, and sensing properties of the pressure sensor were tested. Furthermore, applications of single sensor and sensor array were studied. The results exhibit that the as-prepared pressure sensor successfully detected different human motions and recognized Morse code and words, indicating that the portable sensor can be potentially applied in wide areas such as smart devices and flexible robotics.

Abstract:At present, more and more flexible pressure sensors are used in wearable devices. The improvement of the adsorbability of nanomaterials on sponge flexible pressure sensors is an urgent problem to be solved. Here, using conductive carbon black with good dispersibility and small particle size as the conductive filler filled in the middle of the sponge can improve the absorbability of the sponge. A simple method of soaking a sponge with different thicknesses in conductive carbon black dispersion is used to obtain flexible pressure sensors based on conductive carbon black/sponge. We compare and analyze the differences in initial resistance and sensitivity of sponge pressure sensors with different thicknesses and select the sensor with higher sensitivity (0.194 kPa−1) for response time, recovery time, and stability tests. The sensor is used in the neck, wrist, knee, and other body parts for motion recognition. The two conductive carbon black/sponge sensors are placed orthogonally on the back to identify nod, tilt head, and placed on the elbow to test the angle of arm bending. Conductive carbon black/sponge flexible pressure sensor shows good application prospects in the wearable field.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors offer the advantages of flexibility, low cost, and easy to large area fabrication, and they have wide applications in many fields. This work proposes a flexible capacitive pressure sensor that exhibits a sandwich-like structure, a good performance, and a simple process. Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) is used to fabricate the two electrodes of the sensor because this low cost material possesses good mechanical and electronic properties. Meanwhile, MWNT naturally forms numerous micro-nano structures that can enhance the sensitivity of a sensor. In addition, the dielectric layer of the sensor composed of parylene C (poly(chloro-p-xylylene)) is sandwiched between the two electrodes. The experimental results show that the pressure sensor demonstrates high sensitivity and a rapid response. The average sensitivity is 1.33 kPa (1) at a pressure that ranges from 0 to 758 Pa and the response time reach to millisecond level. Given that low cost, good property and simple process, the sensor has wide application prospects in electronic skins, health monitoring devices, and other wearable electronic products.
Wide linear range and highly sensitive flexible pressure sensor based on multistage sensing process for health monitoring and human-machine interfaces

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors have promising applications in wearable electronic devices. However, fabricating flexible pressure sensors with wide linear range and high sensitivity remain a great challenge. Herein, a micro-nano hybrid conductive elastomer film based on carbon materials with arched micro-patterns array on surface (P-HCF) is developed to show expected sensing properties through a sustainable route. The 1D carbon fibers (CFs) and 0D carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) were incorporated into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix to construct a 3D conductive network consisting of physical contact and tunneling effect among carbon materials to improve the sensing range and sensitivity. The arched micro-patterns of the P-HCF, which is designed mimicking the human fingerprints, influences the pressure distribution inside the material, giving rise to a linear sensitivity over the whole sensing range. Finite element analysis (FEA) method is investigated to simulate and analyze the compression process. The P-HCF sensor exhibits both a high sensitivity of 26.6 kPa−1 and an exceptionally wide linear range of 20 Pa − 600 kPa. The devices were demonstrated in monitoring artery pulses, assisting in diagnosing Parkinson's disease, and analyzing gait for healthcare. Furthermore, the sensors are integrated into complex devices to realize pressure distribution detection, controlling manipulator, and operating PC games. The attainment of excellent pressure sensing performance of the P-HCF, potentially initiates vast applications in health monitoring and human-machine interfaces.
