Abstract:In order to improve the efficient application of chlorpyrifos in rice(Oryza sativa)field,deposition characteristics of chlorpyrifos droplets on rice leaves were studied by means ofdetecting a tracer substance,Ponceau S,added in chlorpyrifos solution.Depositions of chlor-pyrifos on rice leaves decreased tremendously with decrease of rice leaf incline angle.Deposi-tions of chlorpyrifos on rice leaves with incline angle of 90°,60° and 30° were 10.2,5.8 and2.9 times more than that of vertical leaves,respectively,when sprayed with ST110-01 nozzle at0.2 MPa.The effect of droplet size on deposition of chlorpyrifos on rice leaves was also dis-tinct.Under leaf incline angles of 90°,60°,30° and 0°,the deposition of chorpyrifos spraysolution with small droplets(VMD 149.5μm)were 1.5,2.1,3.3 and 5.5 times more thanthat with coarse droplets(VMD 233.7μm),respectively.The deposition of chlorpyrifos onrice leaves decreased with the increase of spray volume in a range from 170 L/hm~2 to 1.36×10~3 L/hm~2.The maximum retention of chlorpyrifos on rice leaves was about 4.66μg/cm~2 trea-ted with chlorpyrifos spray solution under the concentration of 800mg/L.The results indicatedthat the deposition of chlorpyrifos on rice leaves would be improved greatly with decreasingdroplet size and spray volume.

Abstract:Field trials and laboratory bioassays were undertaken to compare the performance and efficacy (mortality of diamondback moth larvae) of insecticides applied to cabbages with three high volume hydraulic knapsack sprayers (NS-16, PB-20 and Selecta 12V) and a controlled droplet application (CDA) sprayer. In field experiments, the high volume knapsack sprayers (application rate 500-600 L ha(-1)) provided better spray coverage on the upper and lower surfaces of inner leaves, the upper surfaces of middle and outer leaves, and greater biological efficacy than the CDA sprayer (application rate 20similar to40 L ha(-1)). The PB-20 provided better spray coverage on the upper surface of middle leaves and both surfaces of outer leaves when compared with the Selecta 12V. However, its biological efficacy in the field was not significantly different from that of the other high volume sprayers. Increasing the application rate from 20 to 40 L ha(-1) for the CDA sprayer significantly increased droplet density but had no impact on test insect mortality. Laboratory evaluations of biological efficacy yielded higher estimates than field evaluations and there was no significant difference between the performance of the PB-20 and the CDA sprayer. Significant positive relationships were detected between insect mortality and droplet density deposited for both the PB-20 and the CDA sprayers.
Regulating Droplet Impact and Wetting Behaviors on Hydrophobic Weed Leaves by a Double-Chain Cationic Surfactant

Abstract:The addition of a surfactant is a constructive strategy to enhance the deposition of pesticides on plant leaves in agriculture. However, currently used surfactants normally require to be used at high concentrations, and most of them are anionic or nonionic. In this work, we found that didecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB), a double-chain cationic surfactant, can not only inhibit droplets from receding and rebounding but also promote sufficient spreading on paraffin and <i>Chenopodium album</i> L. leaf surfaces at an ultralow concentration (0.05%), in comparison with widely reported sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT). This phenomenon is attributed to the fast adsorption kinetics of DDAB from the bulk to the newly created interface (mere 100 ms), decreasing the surface tension significantly. Field experiments further prove that the addition of DDAB can significantly improve the control efficiency of herbicides. Abstract:Although spraying pesticides onto stems and leaves is the most effective method to prevent plant pests and diseases, the splashing of the droplets upon impact with the leaf surface is one of the main ways that the liquid agent is lost during the application process. Moreover, the collision and impact of flowing droplets with the liquid film are complex owing to the presence of microstructures on the leaf surface. Therefore, understanding the droplet impact dynamics is crucial for improving the pesticide application process. In this paper, a simulated rice leaf with a microstructured surface was established, and the impacting dynamics of a liquid droplet on this surface with thin liquid film were investigated using numerical methods. Specifically, the influences of different droplet diameters, droplet velocities, liquid film thicknesses, and leaf surface microstructure dimensions on the impacting dynamics were analyzed. The results showed that the behavior of spreading, jetting, rebound, and splashing occurred upon when droplets impact the simulated surface of rice leaves with thin liquid film. Moreover, a larger droplet diameter and a higher velocity lead to an increase in both the maximum height and diameter of the formed crown. Additionally, the thicker liquid films result in crowns with a smaller base radius. When the jetting angle increases, the crown height increases while its base radius decreases. With the increase in the rib spacing of microstructure, the maximum crown height initially increases and then decreases, while the crown base radius decreases. However, the rib depth has no significant influence on the base radius of the crown. Equations for the quantitative expression of the transition relationships between the deposition, jetting, and splashing phenomena were established on the basis of the Reynolds number, Ohnesorge number, and Weber number as well as the dimensionless liquid film thickness.

Abstract:Given the problem that droplets cannot stay on the surfaces of leaves and wet them effectively, resulting in high levels of pesticide input and environmental pollution, this work studied the dynamic behaviors of droplets with different diameters (400–550 um) falling on the surfaces of wheat leaves from different heights (2–16 cm) using contact angle-measuring instruments and a high-speed camera. The VOF method in Fluent software was used to establish a numerical model of droplets impacting the surfaces of wheat leaves. The results show that with an increase in the initial diameter and initial velocity of a droplet, the maximum diameter of the droplet during the spreading process also gradually increases. After a droplet impacts a wheat leaf, the droplet-spreading diameter first increases and then decreases. The maximum droplet spreading rate, βmax, increases with an increase in the Weber number, βmax ∈We14, which is consistent with the existing theory. The results of this study lay a foundation for studying the spread of droplets on the surfaces of leaves, which is conducive to improving the rate of pesticide utilization.

Abstract:The wettability of plant leaf surface reflects the hydrophilic ability of leaves, and influences the spreading and retention behavior of liquid on leaf surface directly, which resulted in the affection of droplet deposition effect as well. In this study, contact angle was used to characterise leaf surface wettability, the influence of vegetable oil addition on leaf surface wettability and droplet deposition effect was investigated, and the correlation models between leaf surface wettability and deposition amount were established. Besides, the photolysis rate and elution recovery rate of tartrazine 85, allura red, ponceau 2R and methylene blue were compared. As a result, with the increase of vegetable oil addition in spray indicator, the contact angles of spray indicator on rape leaf surface decreased sharply at first, then slowly and tended to be stable, while the deposition amount showed a trend of sharp rise and then fluctuated in a certain range. Meanwhile, the droplet deposition amount on rape leaves was positively correlated with surface wettability, the correlation from good to bad was: tartrazine 85 (R = 0.9299), allura red (R = 0.9244), ponceau 2R (R = 0.9202), methylene blue (R = 0.8748). In combination with the photolysis rate and elution recovery rate of four spray indicators, tartrazine 85 and allura red performed better than ponceau 2R and methylene blue for their low photolysis rate and high elution recovery rate, which were more suitable for farmland spray applications.
Optimization Strategy to Inhibit Droplets Rebound on Pathogen-Modified Hydrophobic Surfaces

Abstract:The deposition and retention of pesticide sprays on the surface of hydrophobic plant leaves is a major agricultural challenge, and the deposition of hydrophobic surfaces caused by plant leaf diseases is also a major agricultural problem. Many recent studies have focused on evaluating the effect of adding surfactants to water rather than to pesticide solutions to increase the deposition and retention of spray liquids. Here, we report a strategy to solve the problem of deposition and retention by studying the impact of the behavior of pesticide droplets with added surfactants and performing kinetic analysis on cucumber leaves with powdery mildew. The reduction in the bounce and splash of the pesticide droplets was analyzed by combining the pinning site formed in the retraction stage and the viscous dissipation in the rebound stage. In the practical application of the pesticide spray, we can clearly see that the bounce, splash, and powdery mildew spore ejection decreased when surfactants were added to the pesticide spray that was used on the cucumber leaves, and the adhesion and retention increased. Abstract:Under the background of the strategy of reducing pesticide application and increasing efficiency, the mechanism and common technology of efficient and accurate target deposition of chemical pesticides are the key development direction. The interaction between pesticide droplets and a leaf surface affects the deposition behavior of pesticides. However, cucumber leaf surface modified by powdery mildew pathogens at different growth stages is more hydrophobic than a normal leaf surface, which hinders the accurate deposition of pesticides on cucumber powdery mildew leaves. Here, an effective strategy for controlling pesticide efficiency for the entire journey of pesticide application is proposed. Based on the impact dynamics of droplets, the dynamic direction of droplet bounce is determined, the trajectory of droplet rebound is preliminarily determined, and the pinning sites formed by droplets on the surface of cucumber leaves with powdery mildew are confirmed. By analyzing the dynamics in the retraction stage and the energy dissipation rate for droplets after impact, the basic parameters that can be used to simply characterize droplet rebound are screened out, and the effect of addition of an effective surfactant is determined by characterizing the basic parameters (energy dissipation rate, retraction rate, recovery coefficient). The molecular structure formed by the addition of nonionic surfactant in pesticide solution is more appropriate to the interaction between the powdery mildew layer and the pesticide solution, which ensured that the droplets are well wet and deposited on cucumber powdery mildew leaves. Meanwhile, a force balance model for the pesticide droplet wetting state is established to calculate the pinning force for the droplet and predict the transition direction for the droplet wetting state. Impact dynamics combined with force balance model analysis provides a constructive method to improve pesticide utilization during the entire journey for pesticide application on hydrophobic plant surfaces.

Abstract:Droplet rebound from hydrophobic leaves is a major factor influencing pesticide utilization. The use of a surfactant is a major strategy to reduce droplet rebound, promoting pesticide deposition on hydrophobic agricultural plant leaves. However, most surfactants known to regulate droplet rebound are either anionic or cationic. In this study, ethoxylated propoxylated 2-ethyl-1-haxanol (EH 6) was identified as a nonionic surfactant that inhibits droplet rebound while promoting the complete spreading of the droplet on hydrophobic leaves. Compared with the widely reported nonionic surfactant Tween 20, EH 6 performs better at concentrations above 0.3%. This phenomenon can be attributed to the rapid migration of EH 6 from the bulk to the newly generated interface, significantly reducing the surface tension. We introduce a simple and effective strategy that can be used to enhance droplet deposition on hydrophobic plant surfaces, which may offer future economic and environmental benefits.

Abstract:Air-assisted sprayers are widely used in orchards for pest and disease control. However, air-assisted spray deposition on the abaxial surface of leaves is often limited. In this study, a method to achieve satisfactory spray deposition on the abaxial leaf surface and an assessment of factors that affect abaxial surface deposition were investigated. The effects of leaf angle, wind speed, platform velocity, and nozzle type were assessed. Abaxial surface coverage was significantly affected by leaf angle, wind speed, and nozzle type, of which the leaf angle had the strongest impact. The leaf angle largely determines the abaxial surface area exposed to the wind field. When the abaxial surface is situated leeward, deposition of droplets on the abaxial surface is difficult. Therefore, to improve abaxial surface exposure for field application, the exposure probability of the abaxial surface at different angles between the leaf and the airflow (α) was examined. The relationship was well represented by a logistic growth curve. The exposure probability exceeded 95% when the α value was greater than 5°. The latter finding was verified by conducting a field application in which the deposition efficiency on the abaxial surface (DEAS) was calculated. Adjustment of the airflow angle based on the theoretical value achieved DEAS of 49.9% and 109.3% in the middle and upper layers of the canopy, respectively, whereas the DEAS was less than 30% if the airflow angle was not adjusted. This is caused by the difference in the exposure probability of the back of the leaf. The results provide a reference for adjustment of the wind field of air-assisted sprayers in field applications.

Abstract:Improving the liquid deposition on plant leaves is crucial during pesticide spraying. However, the hydrophobicity of most plant leaf surfaces makes the droplet splash or run off, finally reducing the efficacy of the foliar-applied pesticide. Though some molecular additives have been employed to regulate the above process, the understanding about the mechanism and the effect of molecular structure is still limited. Herein, cationic surfactants with different double-chain lengths (8-14) are adopted to regulate the droplet impact and wetting on hydrophobic paraffin surface (simulating leaves). With the surfactant chains extending, the capacity for restraining retraction and promoting wetting increases firstly, and then decreases. It can be attributed to that the surfactant with shortest chain cannot form assemblies to inhibit retraction, as the chain length increases, the small-sized micelles reduce but the vesicles become larger and firmer thus the self-assemblies scarcely disaggregate to replenish the monomer at interface during impact. Likewise, short-chain surfactant diffuses faster to interface than long-chain surfactant due to the size effect and hydrophilic/hydrophobic ratio. Our work not only elucidates the mechanism of droplet impact and wetting dynamics by tuning the assemblies aggregation and surfactant diffusion but also promotes the promising application of surfactant in pesticide spraying. Abstract:The relationship between wettability and surface microstructure in a wide range of crop leaves from biological and interfacial structural perspectives is revealed. Crop production and quality safety system have the potential to nurture human health and improve environmental sustainability. Providing a growing global population with sufficient and healthy food is an immediate challenge. However, this system largely depends on the spraying of agrochemicals. Crop leaves are covered with different microstructures, exhibiting distinct hydrophilic, hydrophobic, or even superhydrophobic wetting characteristics, thus leading to various deposition difficulties of sprayed droplets. Here, the relationship between wettability and surface microstructure in different crop leaves from biological and interfacial structural perspectives is systematically demonstrated. A relational model is proposed in which complex microstructures lead to stronger leaf hydrophobicity. And adding surfactant with a faster dynamically migrating velocity and reducing droplet size can improve agrochemical precise deposition. These contribute toward highly accurate and efficient targeted applications with fewer agrochemicals use and promote sustainable models of eco‐friendly agriculture systems.

Understanding dilution effects on particle-containing pesticide droplets deposition on rice leaf via developing CFD-VOF-DPM model

Abstract:Background: Pesticide dilution is one of the essential aspects of plant protection. However, the effect of dilution on the deposition characteristics of pesticide droplets containing particulate additives on crop leaf surfaces remains unclear and warrants further research. Herein, a validated computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-volume of fluid (VOF)-discrete phase model (DPM) numerical model was developed to analyze the influence of particle content on the deposition behavior of droplets on the leaf surface comparatively, taking into account the particle content of different diluted thifluzamide solutions. Additionally, the study aimed to analyze further the kinetic behavior of pesticide droplets landing on rice leaves across different dilution conditions. Results: Pesticide droplets diluted 100-fold had a lower retraction rate during spreading than particle-free droplets, so the solution is more easily deposited in the leaves. Moreover, the low dilution (high concentration) increased the critical adhesion rate between droplets and rice leaves, inhibiting the bouncing of droplets on the leaf surface, thus promoting their effective deposition on the surface. In addition, low dilution (high concentration) is not conducive to spreading droplets when the impact velocity is high, and it also results in a large amount of pesticide use. Conclusion: The actual application process can be through understanding the dilution factor of the configured pesticide solution, and reasonable adjustment of the nozzle pressure can effectively improve the utilization rate of pesticides and reduce the pollution brought by pesticides to the environment. These results provide an essential reference for studying pesticide droplet deposition characteristics, including rice plant protection and spraying technology. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.
Effect of Physical Properties of an Emulsion Pesticide on the Atomisation Process and the Spatial Distribution of Droplet Size

Abstract:In the process of applying plant protection sprays, the atomisation process of complex pesticide components such as emulsion pesticides is different from that of water. Indeed, emulsion is often used as an additive to spray to reduce drift. Therefore, this study investigated the different morphological characteristics that occur between emulsions and water during atomisation at different pressures through visualisation experiments and interpreting the formation of structural differences between the two fragmentation mechanisms. The effect of liquid sheet structure on droplet size distribution was analysed in three-dimensional space, not only from one spatial perspective, but how it alters the morphological structures of liquid sheet leading to different potential droplet drift characteristics. It was found that the smaller the liquid sheet disturbance, the more concentrated the droplet size distribution, the more intense the liquid sheet disturbance, the more dispersed the droplet size distribution. The addition of 0.02% emulsion significantly reduced the proportion of V100 (the ratio of volume with drops smaller than 100 μm to the total volume of all droplets) from 21.33% to 10.24%, and the higher the emulsion concentration, the smaller the V100. The ability of the emulsion to increase V400 decreased with increasing pressure.

Abstract:In air-assisted spraying, pesticide droplet retention on crop leaves is key to evaluating spray effectiveness. However, airflow can deform leaves, reducing droplet retention and affecting spray performance. This study used wind tunnels and high-speed cameras to capture leaf deformation at different airflow speeds and the motion of droplets on curved leaf surfaces. The results showed that leaf curvature during bending deformation is generally less than 0.05 mm -1 . Critical wind speed for droplet movement is negatively correlated with droplet size and leaf curvature, with a 24.8% difference between different leaf curvatures and a 17.5% difference between droplet sizes. The droplet's dimensionless shape variable is positively correlated with both droplet size and leaf curvature. The maximum shape variable on curved leaves reaches 0.24, with acceleration differences of about 30%, while droplets of different sizes show a maximum shape variable of 0.18 and an acceleration difference of up to 68%. These findings enhance understanding of droplet-leaf interactions and provide insights for improving pesticide efficiency.

Abstract:During air-assisted spraying operations in orchards, the interaction between the droplets and the target leaves has a decisive influence on the retention of the droplets on the leaves and the final deposition state. Based on the observation of the final deposition effect of the droplets in the spray test, the retention state of the droplets on the leaves is divided into three categories: uniform distribution (hereinafter referred to as uniform), accumulation, and loss. During the initial interaction between the droplets and the leaves, the adhesion or sliding state of the droplets has an important influence on the final deposition state of the droplets, which is determined by the target leaf adhesion work in this paper. Based on obtaining the characteristic parameters of the leaf surface, a theoretical model of adhesion work related to parameters such as the contact angle, rough factor, and initial tilt angle of the leaf is established. Afterward, through the connection of the droplet coverage on the macro level, the establishment of the deposition state model of the droplet group on the leaf is completed. By conducting the experiment test based on the Box-Behnken design of response surface methodology (RSM), the droplet deposition states under the influence of the spray distance, fan outlet wind speed and droplet size were studied and compared with the predicted values. The test results show that the prediction accuracies of the three states of uniform, accumulation, and loss were 87.5%, 80%, and 100%, respectively. The results of the study indicate that the established prediction model can effectively predict the deposition states of droplets on leaves and provide a reference for the selection of spray operation parameters.

Abstract:This paper combines experimental data with simple mathematical models to investigate the influence of spray formulation type and leaf character (wettability) on shatter, bounce and adhesion of droplets impacting with cotton, rice and wheat leaves. Impaction criteria that allow for different angles of the leaf surface and the droplet impact trajectory are presented; their predictions are based on whether combinations of droplet size and velocity lie above or below bounce and shatter boundaries. In the experimental component, real leaves are used, with all their inherent natural variability. Further, commercial agricultural spray nozzles are employed, resulting in a range of droplet characteristics. Given this natural variability, there is broad agreement between the data and predictions. As predicted, the shatter of droplets was found to increase as droplet size and velocity increased, and the surface became harder to wet. Bouncing of droplets occurred most frequently on hard-to-wet surfaces with high-surface-tension mixtures. On the other hand, a number of small droplets with low impact velocity were observed to bounce when predicted to lie well within the adhering regime. We believe this discrepancy between the predictions and experimental data could be due to air layer effects that were not taken into account in the current bounce equations. Other discrepancies between experiment and theory are thought to be due to the current assumption of a dry impact surface, whereas, in practice, the leaf surfaces became increasingly covered with fluid throughout the spray test runs.

Abstract:Introduction: Oil-based emulsion solution is a common pesticide formulation in agricultural spraying, and its spray characteristics are different from that of water spraying. The well understanding of its spray characteristics is the theoretical basis to improve the pesticide spraying technology. The objective of the present study is to deepen the understanding of the spray characteristics of oil-based emulsion. Method: In this paper, the spatial distribution characteristics of spray droplets of oil-based emulsion were captured visually using the high-speed photomicrography. On the basis of image processing method, the droplet size and distribution density of spray droplets at different spatial locations were analyzed quantitatively. The effects of nozzle configuration and emulsion concentration on spray structures and droplet spatial distribution were discussed. Results: Oil-based emulsion produced a special perforation atomization mechanism compared with water spray, which led to the increase of spray droplet size and distribution density. Nozzle configuration had a significant effect on oil-based emulsion spray, with the nozzle changed from ST110-01 to ST110-03 and ST110-05; the sheet lengths increased to 18 and 28 mm, respectively, whereas the volumetric median diameters increased to 51.19% and 76.00%, respectively. With emulsion concentration increased from 0.02% to 0.1% and 0.5%, the volumetric median diameters increased to 5.17% and 14.56%, respectively. Discussion: The spray droplet size of oil-based emulsion spray can be scaled by the equivalent diameter of discharge orifice of nozzles. The products of volumetric median diameters and corresponding surface tensions were nearly constant for the oil-based emulsion spray of different emulsion concentrations. It is expected that this research could provide theoretical support for improving the spraying technology of oil-based emulsion and increasing the utilization of pesticide.

Abstract:A comprehensive model based on the Navier–Stokes equation and particle tracking method is used to study the effervescent atomization impinging spray, and another model is used to establish the relationship between the droplet velocity near the plate and the different operating conditions. The models and numerical code are validated by comparing the numerical results with the published experimental results. The effects of air-to-liquid ratio, nozzle diameter, liquid mass flow rate, and the position of impinging plate on the Weber number and K number as well as the droplet deposition onto the plate are discussed. The results show that the droplet velocity near the plate increases with increasing air-to-liquid ratio and liquid mass flow rate, and with decreasing nozzle diameter and axial distance from the nozzle exit to the plate. The droplet diameter near the plate increases with increasing axial distance from the nozzle exit to the plate, and with decreasing air-to-liquid ratio. As a function of the nozzle diameter and liquid mass flow rate, the variation of droplet diameter is not monotonous and the effect of liquid mass flow rate on the droplet diameter is insignificant. In the studied operating conditions, it is difficult for the droplet to rebound off the plate when impinging on the plate but it is easier for the droplet to splash. In order to create a condition which can benefit the droplet deposition when impinging on the plate, the suggested ways are to reduce the air-to-liquid ratio and liquid mass flow rate, increase the nozzle diameter, and select a suitable range of axial distance from the nozzle exit to the plate.
Controlling high-speed droplet splashing and superspreading behavior on anisotropic superhydrophobic leaf surfaces by ecofriendly Pseudogemini surfactants

Abstract:Background: Efficient deposition of high-speed droplets on superhydrophobic leaf surfaces remains an important challenge. For anisotropic wired superhydrophobic leaf surfaces, the splashing phenomenon is especially serious because it leads to the low effective utilization of pesticides by biological targets. The lost pesticides cause serious ecological environment pollution, therefore there is an urgent need to develop a green and sustainable cost-effective strategy to achieve efficient deposition of high-speed droplets on anisotropic superhydrophobic leaf surfaces at low dosage. Results: One type of green pseudogemini surfactant is constructed based on fatty acids and hexamethylenediamine by electrostatic interaction to control the splashing and spreading of high-speed droplets on superhydrophobic surfaces. The formed surfactant can not only achieve complete inhibition of the bouncing of droplets, but also promote rapid spreading on superhydrophobic leaf surfaces at very low usage. The efficient deposition and superspreading phenomenon are attributed to the rapid migration and adsorption of the surfactant from the dynamic spherical micelles at the newly formed solid-liquid interface, the network-like aggregated spherical micelles, and the Marangoni effect caused by the surface tension gradient. Moreover, the surfactant shows an excellent synergistic effect with herbicides to control weeds by inhibiting droplet splashing. Conclusion: This work provides a simpler, more effective and sustainable approach to utilize aggregated spherical micelles rather than conventional vesicles or wormlike micelles to improve the droplet deposition on superhydrophobic leaf surfaces and reduce the impact of surfactants and pesticides on the ecological environment. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.
