Abstract:Inspired by the transpiration and natural photosynthesis of plants, bifunctional properties of mixed-dimensional Ti3C2T x (MXene)/La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (LSC) nanohetero-structures to degrade pollutants via photochemical reactions and simultaneously produce fresh water through photothermal effect were explored. Zero-dimensional (0D) LSC in the nanohybrid can absorb short-wave photons to generate active oxidative species for photocatalytic degradation, while photothermal components can convert long-wave photons into heat to evaporate water. More importantly, the hybrid hydrogels are developed by integrating MXene/LSC nanohybrids with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CS), which offers excellent thermal insulation, fluent water transport and low water vaporization enthalpy to accelerate water evaporation. Benefiting from the materials selection and design, the assembled MXene/LSC hydrogels (MLH) achieve a light-to-heat conversion efficiency of 92.3 %, and acquire a superior photodegradation efficiency of 97.2 % toward the removal of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). The MLH evaporator also possesses a significant capacity in the purification of brine and wastewater.

Abstract:MXene/Au@Cu2−xS three‐plasmon hybrids with excellent light absorption and high photothermal conversion efficiency are prepared for high‐performance membrane‐based solar water evaporation due to the synthetic plasmonic heating and charge transfer. The as‐prepared membrane is transferred on a novel home‐made device enabling automatic inflow and outflow of water, which can efficiently generate drinkable water under natural sunlight irradiation. A three‐plasmon hybrid, in which core–shell Au@Cu2−xS hybrids are bonded with ultrathin Ti3C2Tx MXene, is prepared for high‐efficiency photothermal conversion and membrane‐based solar water evaporation for the first time. The MXene/Au nanorod@Cu2−xS hybrids display excellent photothermal conversion efficiency under irradiation of an 808 laser, causing by the three‐plasmon‐induced synergistic plasmonic absorption and heating effects as well as the multichannel charge transfer between the components. Then, Au nanosphere@Cu2−xS and Au nanorod@Cu2−xS hybrids are mixed and combined with MXene to serve as the membrane material, which shows excellent light absorption ranging from ultraviolet to near‐infrared region. By transferring the membrane materials on a hydrophilic cotton piece, the as‐prepared photothermal membrane displays a high evaporation rate of 2.023 kg m−2 h−1 and light‐to‐heat conversion efficiency of 96.1% under 1‐sun irradiation due to the synergistic photothermal conversion and over 96% of solar light absorption efficiency. Furthermore, a home‐made solar evaporation device enabling automatic inflow of untreated water and outflow of evaporated water is designed based on the principles of liquid pressure and connectors. The seawater desalination and sewage treatment experiments performed on the device and membrane indicate the great potential in solar‐light‐driven water purification and drinkable water generation.

Abstract:Sustainable and energy-efficient water purification making use of solar energy is highly desirable to address water scarcity and pollution crisis. However, it remains a challenge to achieve full solar spectrum utilization with photothermal and photodegradation capability. Herein, inspired by the unique optical property of MXene, a novel assembly of MXene hydrogel membrane with synergistic photothermal and photocatalysis effect is proposed for integrated water purification. The MXene hydrogel membrane is fabricated based on the structure-directing of self-stacking MXene nanosheets and its abundant molecular interactions with the polymer matrix, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and the multifunctional layer-crosslinker, porphyrin. The obtained MXene hydrogel membrane exhibits fascinating physicochemical properties combining dynamic hydrophilic network of hydrogel and permeability of membrane, making it a preferred medium for both vapor generation and photodegradation. Moreover, calculation and experimental results illustrates the charge redistributions and coupling interactions between MXene and porphyrin, which imparts enhanced photothermal effect and photocatalytic activitiy. As a result, the MXene hydrogel membrane exhibits an high solar-driven water evaporation rate (1.82 kg m−2 h−1) and a photodegradation efficiency (90.5 %), rendering an integrated water purification capability under one sun irradiation. This work presents a feasible and effective route towards develop of MXene-mediated cooperative photochemical and photothermal solar energy conversion for sustainable water purification.

Abstract:Solar water evaporation is an emerging technology for drinkable water generation, while it remains a challenge to develop materials and device for efficient water evaporation and collection. Herein, dual‐plasmonic Ti3C2Tx/CuSe two‐dimensional (2D)/2D hybrids are prepared for high‐efficiency solar water evaporation and a hydrophilic device is designed for efficient water collection. The Ti3C2Tx/CuSe hybrids, which monocrystalline CuSe ultrathin nanosheets are chemically bonded with Ti3C2Tx nanosheets, show efficient photothermal conversion owing to the plasmon‐coupling‐induced strong light absorption and fast charge transfer in the 2D/2D interface. By transferring the hybrids on a cotton piece, the Ti3C2Tx/CuSe membrane displays over 95% of solar light absorption, a stable evaporation rate of 1.893 kg m‐2 h‐1, and solar‐to‐vapor efficiency of 99.13% under one‐sun irradiation. The membrane can also treat water with more than 20 wt% salinity due to the rich microchannel for ion diffusion. Furthermore, a water evaporation device, which the cambered roof is painted with hydrophilic SiO2, is designed for efficient water collection. The treated roof can efficiently reduce the optical loss and transfer the vapor condensation, leading to a high average freshwater generation of 16.4 kg/m2 in a daily (10 h) natural light irradiation, much higher than other reported devices. Abstract:Two 0D@2D materials (SiO2@GO and TiO2@MXene) are designed as building blocks of the mixed‐dimensional membrane with customizable structure and function. Particularly, the morphologically compatible 0D@2D structures create negatively charged firm water channels, resulting in high water permeance and dye interception rate. Moreover, the 0D@2D TiO2@MXene functions effectively as photocatalyst, addressing the issue of water channel blockage caused by dye adsorption. High‐efficiency and sustainable membrane purification technology is highly desirable but unattainable in the field of water treatment. 2D materials are emerging as very promising candidates for water treatment applications. However, membranes assembled by pure 2D materials lack reasonable structural and functional design, usually exhibiting relatively low water permeance, purification performance, and fouling resistance. Here, a mixed‐dimensional membrane is designed to solve the above‐mentioned problems by assembling two kinds of in situ grown 0D@2D functional building blocks of SiO2@GO and TiO2@MXene. Specifically, the obtained membrane exhibits high and maintainable water permeance of 2114 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 as well as high rejection rates toward organic dyes thanks to the plentiful firm water channels constructed by 0D@2D structures and the negative charges on both SiO2@GO and TiO2@MXene, respectively. Moreover, the 0D@2D TiO2@MXene serves as photocatalyst, rendering the composite membrane intriguing self‐cleaning function under UV irradiation, which is verified by the high recovery ratios of water permeance (97.5%) and dye interception rate (98.7%). Thus, this work offers a promising approach for the design of highly efficient and sustainable membrane for separation and purification purposes.

Abstract:Solar-powered interface evaporation is considered a promising technology to obtain freshwater from non-potable water by using sustainable solar energy. However, research on combining the photocatalytic effect with solar interfacial evaporation technology to go for photothermal conversion materials with full solar spectrum utilization for photothermal and photodegradation capabilities is still scarce. Due to the unique optical properties of MXene, a novel MXene/Ag 3 PO 4 -based membrane with synergistic photothermal and photocatalytic effects was developed from the perspective of practical applications such as water purification, photodegradation of organic dyes and antibacterial properties. In this paper, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and carbon black (CB) were used as the substrate, calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) were selected as the pore-forming agent for hydrophilic modification, and MXene/Ag 3 PO 4 serves as the photocatalyst. The prepared composite polyvinylidene fluoride membrane (PCC-MXene/Ag 3 PO 4 ) with Schottky junction, possesses a rich pore structure, abundant water molecule transport channels, high light absorption ability, and low thermal conductivity, which lead to a good performance in solar interface evaporation, photodegradation and antibacterial. The superhydrophobicity and floatability of the nanosponges in water enable them to continuously pump water, which greatly promotes the dissolution of salt accumulation. With the help of porous nanosponges, PCC-MXene/Ag 3 PO 4 exhibits excellent evaporation stability and salt resistance under 1 kW m −2 solar irradiation, as well as photodegradation of organic dyes. In addition, the PCC-MXene/Ag 3 PO 4 membrane has the properties of self-buoyancy, electrical conductivity, and superior flexibility. Therefore, considering the simple preparation method and fine performances, the PCC-MXene/Ag 3 PO 4 mixed membrane has great application potential in the study of interface evaporation, photodegradation of organic dyes, and antibacterial properties.

Abstract:Piezoelectric photocatalysis has great potential in solving environmental problems. The nanocomposites with cavity structure have played an important role in the the plasmonic enhanced fields. Here, we integrated the synergy of the plasmonic and piezoelectric effect as well as the cavity-enhanced effect, and fabricated the piezoelectric and plasmonic modulated PVDF/MoS2 cavity/Au heterostructure with a facile approach. The experimental results demonstrated the proposed PVDF/MoS2/Au samples possess well photocatalytic performance with the catalytic efficiency up to 99.9% within 45 min and the high pseudo-first-order kinetic constant (K) of 0.04664 min−1.The proposed piezoelectric catalytic active membrane will be a promising candidate material for the next generation of water purification systems, which is of great significance for exploring large-scale applications in wastewater treatment and other plasmonic enhanced fields.

Abstract:Solar-driven water evaporation has been regarded as a promising technology to generate clean water due to the abundance and environmental friendliness of solar energy resources. However, the limited clean water production and limitation in tailored solar-driven system (SDS) have impeded its practical application. Herein, inspired by Lemna minor, a biomimetic, hierarchically structured, photothermal membrane (b-HPM) comprising Ti3C2Tx MXene and oxidized carbon nanotubes cross-linkage is designed. The hydrophilic bottom layer of b-HPM with macropores helps promote water transportation whilst the hydrophobic mesoporous upper layer accelerates solar/contaminant absorption and inhibits heat loss. Such-acquired Janus membrane not only improves the water transfer rate to reach 1.66 kg m−2h−1 but also harvests excellent evaporation efficiency of 99.73% deriving from the direct solar light energy (92.58%) and ambient environment (7.15%) under one-sun illumination. Impressively, PPCP removal of > 99% in raw wastewater, and no pollutants were found in the distilled water. More encouragingly, b-HPM enables a high evaporation rate and contaminant removal efficiency in real waterbody with long-term utilization based upon experimental and theoretical calculation results. Our designed SDS synergizes the merits of facile preparation, high light utilization efficiency, high-rate clean water generation, stability and robust performance, holding great promise in solving freshwater shortage and remedying water pollution under natural sunlight.

Abstract:Solar-driven interfacial evaporation technology is a promising sustainable approach to mitigate the global energy crisis and clean water scarcity. The advanced interfacial evaporation materials make a non-negligible contribution to the solar thermal utilization for water purification. In this work, a Cu-catecholate metal–organic framework-based photothermal membrane (Cu-CATM) is developed to generate freshwater from seawater and recover clean water from wastewater. Thanks to the unique photothermal effect and the three-dimensional nanosheet array structure of Cu-catecholate metal–organic framework (Cu-CAT MOF), the Cu-CATM enabled a promising evaporation rate of 2.43 kg m −2 h −1 and a high solar-vapor conversion efficiency of 92% under solar irradiance of 1 sun. Further, the Cu-CATM could be applied to solar seawater desalination with durable evaporation rate and no salt accumulation. Also, the Cu-CATM enabled solar utilization for synchronous photothermal desalination and photocatalytic degradation, which highlighted the broader environmental application for water remediation or wastewater treatment via photothermal-photocatalytic route. This work presents a viable and effective route for the development of photothermal membranes toward future sustainable clean water production from non-conventional water resources.

Abstract:Solar energy is regarded as the most attractive energy source for producing clean water and green energy, as well as for photocatalytic pollutants removal. MXene, a 2D photothermal material, has opened up new opportunities in solar energy harvesting due to its unique properties. However, it has limitations, such as strong oxidation and degradation tendencies, that affect its stability. To address these challenges, herein we fabricated a highly stable MXene-PVA-TiO2@PVDF Janus membrane and tested it in an advanced photothermal-catalytic membrane distillation (PMD) system. The modified MXene-PVA-TiO2@PVDF membrane demonstrated superior photothermal desalination flux (1.23 kg/m2h with 99.9% salt rejection) and efficient photodegradation capacity (methylene blue removal rate > 95%) under 1 sun irradiation. The superior photothermal desalination efficiency of the prepared membrane is attributed to the wide-spectrum optical absorption and exceptional light-to-heat conversion characteristics of MXene, while a substantial enhancement in the photodegradation performance is ascribed to the formation of the MXene-TiO2 2D/3D hierarchical structure acting as a direct Z-scheme photocatalyst. The chemical and mechanical strength was significantly enhanced due to the robust 2D network structure of MXene-PVA. Overall, this study demonstrates the feasibility of synergetic photothermal-catalytic membrane distillation and the promising prospects of MXene materials in this field.

Abstract:MXene attracts extensive interest due to its unique physicochemical properties and adjustable transmission channels. However, severe membrane fouling has made the separation performance below the theoretical prediction. Introducing solar energy into membrane filtration is fascinating to address this issue. Inspired by nature, here, we constructed an advanced 0D/2D/2D MXene-based heterogeneous layered membrane by coupling the graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and Ti3C2Tx (MXene) nanosheets. The titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) and oxygen vacancies were in-situ generated due to the thermodynamical metastability of the Ti3C2Tx nanosheets. The produced TiO2 NPs can broaden the transmission channel and endow this membrane with antifouling capacity. Meanwhile, the oxygen vacancy can capture the photogenerated electron and promote effective electron-hole pairs separation. The 0D/2D/2D heterojunction presented a broader light-absorption capacity. Notably, the designed membrane endowed a smaller bandgap (similar to 2.27 eV), which was lower than most previous reports. These features granted it superior self-cleaning ability. Hence, it kept its excellent separation and catalytic degradation capacity with flux recovery ratio greater than 98% after cyclic experiment. The remarkable self-cleaning capability of this membrane manifests its attractive potential application in low-energy and sustainable water purification.

Abstract:Solar-powered interfacial water evaporation technology coupled with photocatalytic function is considered as a promising solution to achieve the dye wastewater purification and solve the problem of organic pollution’s enrichment on traditional solar absorbers. In this study, a two-dimensional (2D) MoS2/ZnIn2S4 composite was designed by a two-step hydrothermal method, and served as a solar absorber with a water evaporation rate of 1.54 kgꞏm−2ꞏh−1. The deposition of ZnIn2S4 on MoS2 endowed the composite with 98.7% of photodegradation efficiency for dye wastewater via the construction of type Ⅰ heterojunction and avoided the problem of secondary pollution of dye wastewater. This study successfully integrated photocatalysis into the cutting-edge solar-driven interfacial evaporation system, accomplishing the expansion of multifunctional solar absorber and extending the application for the treatment of dye wastewater with zero wastewater discharge.

Abstract:Solving the problems of water pollution and water shortage is an urgent need for the sustainable development of modern society. Different approaches, including distillation, filtration, and photocatalytic degradation, have been developed for the purification of contaminated water and the generation of clean water. In this study, we explored a new approach that uses solar light for both water purification and clean water generation. A bifunctional membrane consisting of a top layer of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs), a middle layer of Au NPs, and a bottom layer of anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) was designed and fabricated through multiple filtration processes. Such a design enables both TiO2 NP-based photocatalytic function and Au NP-based solar-driven plasmonic evaporation. With the integration of these two functions into a single membrane, both the purification of contaminated water through photocatalytic degradation and the generation of clean water through evaporation were demonstrated using simulated solar illumination. Such a demonstration should also help open up a new strategy for maximizing solar energy conversion and utilization.

Dual Functional Asymmetric Plasmonic Structures for Solar Water Purification and Pollution Detection

Abstract:In the past decade, various rational designed plasmonic structures have demonstrated extraordinary functionalities from information, photothermal therapy to solar energy conversion. Recently, plasmon enhanced solar steam generation is attracting a lot of attention for its great potential in desalination, sterilization, etc. Here for the first time we demonstrate an asymmetric plasmonic structure (APS) formed by self-assembly of close packed silver nanoparticles into porous templates with dual functions, solar water purification and pollution detection. The dark porous side of the APS can enable efficient solar steam generation (with energy transfer efficiency similar to 80%) while the shiny metallic side can enable sensitive chemicals detection (with detection limit down to similar to 10(-12) M). Such impressive performance in solar thermal conversion and chemical sensing are stemmed from the broadband and efficient light absorption (solar absorptivity > 90%) as well as pronounced local field enhancement (maximal enhancement factor similar to 10(9)), respectively. As an example of functional integration, this dual functional APS can enable on-site pollution detection and purification of water: water sources contaminated with various kinds of common pollutants have been examined and purified. Both functions of detection and purification exhibit long time durable performance up to similar to 45 days, with < 20% decay in Raman intensity and < 10% decay in energy transfer efficiency, respectively.

Abstract:Photothermal materials afford growing interest in environmental governance, especially for addressing complicated environmental issues including the purification of wastewater and regeneration of freshwater together. Here, we constructed a dual-functional photothermal nanosphere by integrating ultrafine plasmonic Co 3 O 4 (∼10 nm) into an N-doping carbon layer over silica nanosphere (SiO 2 @Co/C). Biocompatible dopamine coating induces the incorporation of Co precursor and activity optimization of metal species over the SiO 2 nanosphere during the synthetic process. In this way, the SiO 2 nanosphere maintains the stable configuration of the carbon coating thin layer to accommodate the local interfacial Co 3 O 4 catalytic active substances. Impressively, this catalyst also owns a well-developed interconnecting N-containing network structure, unconventional redox cycle pair of Co(II)/Co(III), and significant metal-carbon interaction. A controlled thermal procedure (500–800 °C) was implemented to tune the optimized activity state of the catalyst. Under these merits, advanced oxidation process (AOPs) through activating persulfate by the obtained materials to degrade organic pollutants was performed in the presence/absence of sunlight, further validating the appreciable photothermal effect to improve the catalytic thermodynamic behavior. The reaction parameters ad anion interference were studied in detail, and SiO 2 @Co/C-600 can completely degrade bisphenol A (BPA) (30 mg L -1 ) with a high reaction rate constant of 0.722 min -1 and a low reaction activation energy of E a (19.4 kJ/mol), and also shows superior mineralization activity for some stubborn pollutants, including oxytetracycline (OTC), 2,4-dichlorophenol and tetracycline (TC) through the reinforced photothermal approach. Besides, SiO 2 @Co/C-600 shows multiple functions in interfacial solar water evaporation application (1.36 kg m -2 h -1 , 81.59 %), revealing great potential value of purification and regeneration of water in the complex pollution condition. This work gives the possibility for the next-generation versatile and competitive photothermal environmental governing materials.

Abstract:With the water and energy crises becoming critical issues for an increasingly industrialized society, solar‐driven water purification technologies are highly desired for both potable water production and wastewater treatment. This work investigated the performance of an integrated photocatalytic and photothermal composite, TiO2/Au‐carbon nanotube (TiO2/Au‐CNT)‐coated SiC ceramic plate, in complex contaminated water treatment driven by solar energy. The short‐wavelength part of the solar spectrum was utilized for simultaneous photo‐oxidation of rhodamine B (RhB) (oxidation efficiency of ∽98.5%) and photo‐reduction of Cr(VI) (reduction efficiency of ∽90.6%) in an integrated solar still device. A Z‐scheme charge transfer mechanism with CNTs as an electron mediator was proposed and discussed for TiO2/Au‐CNT‐coated SiC ceramic plate. Meanwhile, the design in this work allowed the long‐wavelength part of the solar spectrum to be utilized for high‐quality potable clean water production via solar distillation with a solar‐to‐water evaporation efficiency of ∽72%. Therefore, this integrated photocatalytic and photothermal system can be utilized for potable water production and wastewater treatment in the same device with high solar energy utilization efficiency.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Effectively harnessing renewable and inexhaustible solar radiation for energy conversion has attracted significant research interest in the past decade. Solar thermal conversion, as a ubiquitous phenomenon, can be implemented to evaporate water and concurrently boost photocatalytic performance for addressing freshwater scarcity and energy crisis. Most recently, solar water evaporation accompanied by photocatalytic degradation, sterilization, and hydrogen production has been proposed as a promising avenue to endow new vitality into the field of clean water and energy production. Driven by the advances of rationally designed solar-powered functional materials, a large variety of photothermal-coupled photocatalysis technologies have been exploited. In this context, it is imperative to summarize the recent progress and discuss the challenges in this multidisciplinary field. Herein, we overview photothermal materials based on various fundamental principles and highlight emerging applications in the areas of solar water evaporation, water purification, and solar-driven energy production. Furthermore, the challenges and perspectives toward both fundamental research and practical applications are also proposed. It is envisioned that this review can provide insightful suggestions to further advance the development of integrated solar thermal driven water evaporation and photocatalytic systems to fulfill concurrent energy conversion and environmental applications.

Abstract:Photothermal desalination is a promising approach for seawater purification by harvesting solar energy. Titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx MXene) membranes have been regarded as potential materials for photothermal desalination by virtue of their excellent light-to-heat conversion. However, achieving a well-balanced synergy between high evaporation rate and good salt resistance remains a significant challenge due to their limited solar absorption and inferior stability. Herein, we report a self-assembled flexible porphyrin-Ti3C2Tx MXene Janus membrane (Janus PMX membrane) for dual-functional enabled photothermal desalination. The self-assembly of porphyrin on MXene not only effectively creates a favorable hydrophobic surface but also simultaneously enables efficient solar utilization. The significant interactions and charge redistribution between MXene and porphyrin lead to a stable hydrophobic/hydrophilic Janus structure with synergistically enhanced photothermal conversion. As a result, the Janus PMX membrane demonstrates highly efficient water pumping, heat localization, vapor generation, and salt resistance during photothermal desalination. Combined Structural and Plasmonic Enhancement of Nanometer-Thin Film Photocatalysis for Solar-Driven Wastewater Treatment

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO$_2$) thin films are commonly used as photocatalytic materials. Here, we enhance the photocatalytic activity of devices based on TiO$_2$ by combining nanostructured glass substrates with metallic plasmonic nanostructures. We achieve a three-fold increase of the catalyst's surface area through nanoscale three-dimensional patterning of periodic conical grids, which creates a broadband optical absorber. The addition of aluminum and gold activates the structures plasmonically and improves the optical absorption in the TiO$_2$ films to above 70% in the visible and NIR spectral range. We demonstrate the resulting enhancement of the photocatalytic activity with organic dye degradation tests under different light sources. Furthermore, the pharmaceutical drug Carbamazepine, a common water pollutant, is reduced in aqueous solution by up to 48% in 360 minutes. Our approach is scalable and potentially enables future solar-driven wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Desalination processes frequently require a lot of energy to generate freshwater and energy, which depletes resources. Their reliance on each other creates tension between these two vital resources. Herein, hierarchical MXene nanosheets and bismuth vanadate (Ti3C2/BiVO4)-derived microcapsules were synthesized for a photothermal-induced photoredox reaction for twofold applications, namely, solar-driven water evaporation and hydrogen (H2) production. For this purpose, flexible aerogels were fabricated by introducing Ti3C2/BiVO4 microcapsules in the polymeric network of natural rubber latex (NRL-Ti3C2/BiVO4), and a high evaporation rate of 2.01 kg m-2 h-1 was achieved under 1-kW m-2 solar intensity. The excellent performance is attributed to the presence of Ti3C2/BiVO4 microcapsules in the polymeric network, which provides balanced hydrophilicity and broadband sun absorption (96 %) and is aimed at plasmonic heating with microscale thermal confinement tailored by heat transfer simulations. Notably, localized plasmonic heating at the catalyst active sites of the Ti3C2/BiVO4 heterostructure promotes enhanced photocatalytic H2 production evolved after 4 h of reaction is 9.39 μmol, which is highly efficient than pure BiVO4 and Ti3C2. This method turns the issue of water-fuel crisis into a collaborative connection, presenting avenues to collectively address the anticipated demand rather than fostering competition.
