Abstract:Development of anomalously high porosities in very fine‐grained deep clastic reservoirs is still largely unknown. The reservoirs in the S13 block of the lower Meishan Formation in the Qiongdongnan Basin, South China Sea, developed a zone of anomalously high porosity up to 28.5%, and thus offers an ideal opportunity to quantitatively study the formation mechanism of the abnormally high porosity but fine‐grained deep clastic reservoir from the diagenetic perspective. Our study demonstrates that the first phase charging of oil and organic acid promoted the early‐stage dissolution. This process, however, restrained the early‐stage compaction, cementation, and transformation of clay minerals in sandstone reservoirs. CO2‐rich thermal fluid at the fourth phase enhanced the dissolution of late‐stage feldspar and early‐stage cements and authigenic clay minerals. The massive Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, and other ions generated by the dissolution facilitated the formation of late‐stage siderite and ankerite, which filled the pore throats and lowered the reservoir permeability. Furthermore, the rapid deposition produced high primary porosities, and the early‐stage overpressure also inhibited the compaction, cementation, and clay transformation in the S13 block. All these processes promoted the preservation of primary pores, and the S13 block developed reservoirs with anomalously high porosity and low permeability. By contrast, the C24 block was only charged by oil and hydrocarbon‐rich gas at the second and third phases, and experienced strong compaction, weak dissolution, and strong cementation. Consequently, fewer primary and secondary pores, but higher contents of cements and authigenic clays were generated in the C24 block. The reservoirs in the C24 block exhibit medium porosity but low permeability.

Abstract:The Oligocene Zhuhai sandstones are significant reservoirs for hydrocarbons in the Baiyun Sag, South China Sea. For effective appraisal, exploration and exploitation of such a deep-water hydrocarbon sandstone, samples of five wells from depths of 850 m to 3 000 m were studied. A series of comprehensive petrographic and geochemical analyses were performed to unravel the diagenetic features and their impact on the reservoir quality. Petrographically, the sandstones are dominated by feldspathic litharenites and lithic arenites with fine to medium grain sizes and moderate to good sorting. The reservoir quality varies greatly with a range of porosity from 0.2% to 36.1% and permeability from 0.016 × 10 −3 μm 2 to 4 301 × 10 −3 μm 2 , which is attributed to complex diagenetic evolution related to sedimentary facies; these include compaction, cementation of calcite, dolomite, siderite and framboidal pyrite in eogenetic stage; further compaction, feldspar dissolution, precipitation of ferrocalcite and ankerite, quartz cements, formation of kaolinite and its illitization, precipitation of albite and nodular pyrite, as well as hydrocarbon charge in mesogenetic stage. The dissolution of feldspar and illitization of kaolinite provide internal sources for the precipitation of quartz cement, while carbonate cements are derived from external sources related to interbedded mudstones and deep fluid. Compaction is the predominant factor in reducing the total porosity, followed by carbonate cementation that leads to strong heterogeneity. Feldspar dissolution and concomitant quartz and clay cementation barely changes the porosity but significantly reduces the permeability. The high-quality reservoirs can be concluded as medium-grained sandstones lying in the central parts of thick underwater distributary channel sandbodies (>2 m) with a high content of detrital quartz but low cement.

Abstract:Diagenesis typically exerts a crucial impact on the formation of high-quality sandstone reservoirs in the Eocene Shahejie Formation, Dongying Depression. To better understand the formation process of petrophysical properties, this research conducts petrographic and geochemical analyses to investigate the nature of diagenetic fluids. Petrographic observations suggest that the dominant cements are carbonate, authigenic quartz, and clay minerals, accompanied with the dissolution of feldspar and calcite. The homogenization temperature of aqueous inclusions in quartz overgrowth usually exceeds 90°C corresponding to the maturity of organic matter. Quartz overgrowths contain higher amounts of CaO and Al2O3 than detrital quartz. This indicates that the siliceous fluid mainly originates from the dissolution of feldspar. Moreover, the conversion of clay minerals also provides trace amounts of silica into pore water during the burial process. Carbonate cements consist of early-stage calcite as well as late-stage Fe-calcite and ankerite. Calcite with relatively higher MnO proportions shows yellow luminescence and dissolution signs. Fe-calcite and ankerite cements have a higher homogenization temperature than that of quartz overgrowth and mainly concentrate in FeO and MgO as well as contain a small amount of Na+, K+, and Sr2+. The rare earth element (REE) pattern of bulk mudstone and carbonate cements as well as C–O isotopic evidences indicate that the diagenetic fluids of carbonate cementation are primarily controlled by the adjacent mudstone, whereas mineral dissolution and altered clay minerals in sandstone provide additional cations for the local reprecipitation of late-stage carbonate. Therefore, diagenetic fluids within sandstone reservoirs are typically subject to alkaline–acid–alkaline conditions and are influenced by internal sources in a closed system. Compaction significantly reduces the pore space of sandstone reservoirs in the Boxing Sag. Carbonate cementation further increases the complexity of pore structure and obeys the principle of mass balance.

Abstract:Fluid-rock interactions are important factors affecting pore genesis and hydrocarbon accumulation in sedimentary basins. Different responses and processes will occur under differential oil or gas charge intensities, which is important for reservoir evaluation and prediction, but few studies focus on this topic. To fill this knowledge gap, petrologic, major element, and isotopic study were conducted in conglomeratic reservoirs of the late Permian Upper Wuerhe Formation (P(3)w) in the Shawan Sag, Junggar Basin, northwestern China. The results show that tuff and volcanic debris are enriched in the formation, and laumontites generally occur as cements due to the alteration of volcanic materials. In oil and gas reservoirs undergoing strong hydrocarbon charge, laumontite and calcite cements generally exist, and partial of cements, as well as some debris and feldspar, are dissolved, forming abundant secondary porosity. The two cements also exist in the water-bearing and dry layers, but both of them are only pratially dissolved. This differential dissolution implies the reformation of acidic hydrocarbon-bearing fluid in clastic reservoirs. Mineral assemblages show that laumontite and small amounts of early-stage calcite precipitated during eodiagenesis. During the continuous compaction of the reservoir, first-stage hydrocarbon charge occurred in the Middle Jurassic when primary porosity almost disappeared. Hydrocarbon charge inhibited the precipitation of laumontite and calcite, promoting their dissolution. Second-stage hydrocarbon charge in the Early Cretaceous further caused more extensive dissolution of laumontite and calcite, forming abundant secondary pores. Authigenic quartz, kaolinite and late-stage calcite precipitated as the associated minerals of laumontite dissolution. Late-stage calcite is characterized by Mn-rich (>2.5%) and delta C-13 depleted deviations (-19.5 parts per thousand similar to -14.3 parts per thousand, VPDB), recording the strong activities of hydrocarbon-bearing fluids. This study emphasizes the importance of reservoir reconstruction after hydrocarbon charge and suggests favourable hydrocarbon accumulations may be found in deeply buried clastic reservoirs.

Abstract:Tight sandstone and shale oil and gas are the key targets of unconventional oil and gas exploration in the lake-delta sedimentary systems of China. Understanding the coevolutionary diagenesis of sandstone and shale reservoirs is crucial for the prediction of reservoir quality, ahead of drilling, in such systems. Thin-section description, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), fluid inclusion analysis, porosity and permeability tests, high-pressure mercury intrusion (HPMI) measurements and nuclear magnetic resonance tests (NMR) were used to reveal the coevolutionary diagenetic mechanisms of a sandstone and shale reservoir in the Lianggaoshan Formation of the Eastern Sichuan Basin, China. The thermally mature, organic-matter-rich, dark shale of layer 3 is the most important source rock within the Lianggaoshan Formation. It started to generate abundant organic acids at the early stage of mesodiagenesis and produced abundant hydrocarbons in the early Cretaceous. Porewater with high concentrations of Ca2+ and CO32− entered the sandstone reservoir from dark shale as the shale was compacted during burial. Potassium feldspar dissolution at the boundary of the sandstone was more pervasive than at the center of the sandstone. The K+ released by potassium feldspar dissolution migrated from the sandstone into mudstone. Grain-rimming chlorite coats occurred mainly in the center of the sandstone. Some silica exported from the shale was imported by the sandstone boundary and precipitated close to the shale/sandstone boundary. Some intergranular dissolution pores and intercrystal pores were formed in the shale due to dissolution during the early stages of mesodiagenesis. Chlorite coats, which precipitated during eodiagenesis, were beneficial to the protection of primary pore space in the sandstone. Calcite cement, which preferentially precipitated at the boundary of sandstone, was not conducive to reservoir development. Dissolution mainly occurred at the early stage of mesodiagenesis due to organic acids derived from the dark shale. Calcite cement could also protect some primary pores from compaction and release pore space following dissolution. The porosity of sandstone and shale was mainly controlled by the thickness of sandstone and dark shale.

Abstract:Several giant oilfileds have been discovered during recent exploration in the Ordovician carbonates in zone between the Awati and Manjiaer depressions, Tarim Basin, China. These oilfields are deeply buried (>7000 m), and most productive wells are found adjacent to fault zones, suggesting faults may play a crucial role in reservoir development. Here, we use petrographic, microanalytical and geochemical techniques on different stages of void-filling calcite cements to decipher the tectonic-fluid evolution history. Vugs are generally occluded by V1 and V2 calcite cements, which precipitated from marine and burial diagenetic fluids. Two major episodes of fluid invasion are evident in each set of fractures from Middle Ordovician strike-slip faults (F1) to Late Devonian to the Permian strike-slip faults (F2). The sub-horizontal fracture-filling F1 calcite cements show the involvement of near-surface marine to marine-evolved brines, given that δ18Ocarb, restored δ18Ow values and rare earth element and yttrium (REY) profiles of F1-1 calcite cements are comparable to Ordovician seawater. The F1-2 calcite cements are characterized by negative δ18Ocarb, positive restored δ18Ow, and apparent Ce positive anomalies. The sub-vertical fracture-filling ferroan F2-1 calcite cements with fluorescence show the highest restored T(Δ47) (up to 125 °C), high restored δ18Ow values (up to +7.0‰ VSMOW), and an enrichment in MREE, which is consistent with an origin from hot hydrocarbon-bearing basinal brines. The subsequent F2-2 calcite cements may have precipitated during the Late Permian from mixing of basinal brines and deeply circulated meteoric water, as suggested by significantly negative δ18Ocarb values, cooler restored T(Δ47), negative restored δ18Ow values (down to −5.9‰ VSMOW), and flat REY patterns. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios of calcite cements are similar to coeval seawater. This study highlights the importance of fault-related fluid circulation in the development of a hydrocarbon reservoir, and may be applicable to other deep carbonate-hosted reservoirs.

Abstract:Due to the limitations of pore throat characterization techniques, in-depth studies on the evolution and influencing variables of tight sandstone reservoirs remain lacking, despite the importance of pore structure in evaluating their storage and seepage capacities. In this study, the effect of coupled dissolution–precipitation on the heterogeneity of the pore structure of tight sandstone was investigated using advanced techniques in conjunction with traditional geochemical analyses. The primary reasons for the variability in tight sandstone pore structure were different diagenetic processes and tectonic evolution. In tight sandstones, numerous burial phases led to a significant loss of porosity. However, tight sandstones that have been successively leached by meteoric water and deep burial organic acid have improved secondary pore space due to Yanshan tectonic uplift and Himalayan tectonic burial. The redistribution or blockage of pore space can occur as a result of dissolved material migrating and re-precipitating in tight sandstones that have been deeply buried and altered by organic acidic fluids. Furthermore, nuclear magnetic resonance cryoporometry and nuclear magnetic resonance experiments were used to provide precise and accurate quantitative analysis for discussing the evolution of pore structure by complex dissolution–precipitation process within the pore scale. The formation of good pore structure was mainly dependent on the increase in pore volume generated by dissolution in the submicron and micron range (less than 10 μm). Due to interfacial energy effects, authigenic minerals precipitated preferentially in macropores, resulting in a preponderance of microporosity and small changes in porosity but at least an order of magnitude reduction in permeability. This study provides a reliable reference for genesis analysis and evaluation of tight sandstones as well as a new perspective for understanding the formation and evolution of complex pore structures.

Abstract:Tight sandstone gas is an important unconventional hydrocarbon resource, but its exploration is made difficult by the compactness and heterogeneity of the sandstone. Fluid–rock interaction and subsequent cementation play key roles in developing this heterogeneity. We conducted a petrographic, trace element, and isotopic study of the Upper Triassic Xujiahe sandstones from the Sichuan Basin, to investigate fluid–rock interactions and associated diagenetic effects. Carbonate fragments and cements are widespread in these sandstones, and are the primary control on the nature of the Xujiahe sandstone reservoirs. The carbonate cements primarily comprise of calcite and are typically distributed around the margins of sandstone bodies and along fine-grained beds. Carbonate minerals in the centre or at the margin of sandstone units have heavy δ13Ccarb values of ca. 0‰, whereas δ13Ccarb is markedly depleted in the transition zone with values as low as −10‰, reflecting a contribution from organic carbon. Manganese, Strontium and Barium generally become enriched in the carbonate cements with diagenesis, and their concentrations correlate with porosity and δ13Ccarb. Redox sensitive Mn, and fluid-mobile Sr and Ba were analysed to reveal the diagenetic processes and environment of carbonate precipitation. We propose that fluids flowed preferentially along the central parts of sandstone units, associated with mineral dissolution, whereas cementations took place near the margins of the units. Fluid–rock interaction, especially that involving late hydrocarbon-related fluids, greatly enhances the heterogeneity of sandstones and can potentially create high-quality reservoirs in the central parts of tight sandstone units.
Evolution and controls of high reservoir quality in Oligocene sandstones from moderate to deep burial, Nanpu Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, China

Abstract:The Oligocene sandstones characterized by highly variable reservoir quality are the main hydrocarbon exploration and development targets in the Nanpu Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, China. In this study, the evolution and controls of reservoir quality in Oligocene sandstones from moderate to deep burial were investigated using petrographic and petrological data. The results show that the Oligocene sandstones are mostly fine-to coarse-grained, subangular to subrounded roundness, moderately sorted feldspathic litharenites and lithic arkoses with an average Q/F/R distribution of 48.4: 29.1: 22.5. Three anomalously high porosity/permeability zones (AHPZs, hereinafter named AHPZ-I, AHPZ-II, and AHPZ-III, respectively) are developed at depth ranges of 2300–3100 m, 3200–3550 m, and 3700–4200 m, respectively. Notably, the three zones are featured by distinctly different pore types: mainly primary pores in AHPZ-I; pore combination (average primary pore volume > average secondary pore volume) in AHPZ-II; primary pores with a few microfractures in AHPZ-III. The pore-throat sizes controlling permeability in anomalously high porosity sandstones (AHPS) decrease steadily from AHPZ-I to AHPZ-III-1 and then increase significantly at AHPZ-III-2. The AHPS reservoirs are characterized by low displacement pressure, large pore throat and mercury intrusion saturation, and high free fluid index (FFI) and reservoir quality index (RQI).Compaction greatly degraded the reservoir quality of Oligocene sandstones; carbonate cementation further restricts the formation of high-quality reservoirs. The sandstones with low content (<10 %) of carbonate cements tend to have larger primary porosity and secondary porosity, hence a larger RQI. The formation of AHPZ-I and AHPZ-II is attributed to higher content of rigid particle components, lower carbonate cements, and strong dissolution. Moreover, good sorting, responsible for a higher original porosity, also plays a positive role in the cause of AHPZ-I. The coarse-grained particles and early petroleum emplacement are the keys to the preservation of primary porosity in AHPZ-III. The petroleum emplacement effectively inhibits the feldspar dissolution and kaolinite precipitation in the deeply buried sandstones with depths larger than 4000 m. In addition, the generation of crushed microfractures in coarse grains leads to relatively low porosity and high permeability.

Abstract:Dissolution mechanism and favorable reservoir distribution prediction are the key problems restricting oil and gas exploration in deep-buried layers. In this paper, the Enping Formation and Zhuhai Formation in Baiyun Sag of South China Sea was taken as a target. Based on the thin section, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, porosity/permeability measurement, and mercury injection, influencing factors of dissolution were examined, and a dissolution model was established. Further, high-quality reservoirs were predicted temporally and spatially. The results show that dissolved pores constituted the main space of the Paleogene sandstone reservoir. Dissolution primarily occurred in the coarse- and medium-grained sandstones in the subaerial and subaqueous distributary channels, while dissolution was limited in fine-grained sandstones and inequigranular sandstones. The main dissolved minerals were feldspar, tuffaceous matrix, and diagenetic cement. Kaolinization of feldspar and illitization of kaolinite are the main dissolution pathways, but they occur at various depths and temperatures with different geothermal gradients. Dissolution is controlled by four factors, in terms of depositional facies, source rock evolution, overpressure, and fault activities, which co-acted at the period of 23.8–13.8 Ma, and resulted into strong dissolution. Additionally, based on these factors, high-quality reservoirs of the Enping and Zhuhai formations are predicted in the northern slope, southwestern step zone, and Liuhua uplift in the Baiyun Sag.

Abstract:The diagenetic evolution of sandstone is very complicated under the conditions of high temperatures and pressures in deep-water, deep-buried regimes, which have great influence on reservoir quality. This study investigates the typical reservoir target of Neogene deep-water, submarine-fan sandstones under high-temperature, high-pressure regimes in the Qiongdongnan Basin, South China Sea. Utilizing a thin section, scanning electron microscope (SEM), mineral geochemistry combined with burial history evolution, complex diagenetic events, and main controlling factors of the sandstone in the Neogene Meishan Formation were determined. The results show that the evolution of sandstone reservoirs is initially controlled by depositional framework compositions and subsequently modified by eogenetic and mesogenetic alterations during progressive burial. Eogenetic alterations mainly include the following: (1) mechanical compaction; (2) dissolution of feldspar; (3) low-Fe calcite cementation. Mesogenetic events were identified as the following: (1) dissolution of feldspar; (2) ferroan calcite and ankerite formation; (3) precipitation of quartz and clay mineral. Mechanical compaction is greatly influenced by the original depositional framework composition, and sandstone samples enriched in high contents of detrital clay matrix always experienced extensive mechanical compaction. Different phases of carbonate cement during different diagenetic regimes lead to continuous destruction on reservoir porosity. The dissolution of unstable feldspar minerals during eogenetic and mesogenetic environments leads to the development of secondary porosities and would enhance the quality of the reservoir. Overpressure formation is pervasively developed owing to early disequilibrium compaction and subsequent natural gas charging. Only well-sorted sandstones with low contents of detrital clay matrix could resist early mechanical compaction, lead to ample residual original porosities, and then undergo extensive mineral dissolution to generate sufficient secondary porosities. Subsequently, these porosities would be effectively protected by overpressure formation. Poor-sorted sandstones with high contents of detrital clay matrix would experience strong mechanical compaction and extensive destruction of original porosities. Thus, these sandstones are difficult to have significant dissolution and are unable to be effectively protected by overpressure formation. Therefore, the interplay between the original framework composition and the corresponding diagenetic pathways coupled with overpressure formation would result in strong reservoir heterogeneity for the deep-buried sandstones during progressive burial.

Abstract:Feldspar dissolution and precipitation of clays and quartz cements are important diagenetic reactions affecting reservoir quality evolution in sandstones with detrital feldspars. We examined two sets of sandstone reservoirs to determine whether the sandstone diagenetic systems were open or closed to the mass transfer of products from feldspar dissolution and its impact on reservoir quality. One of the reservoirs is the Eocene fan delta sandstone buried 2.5–4.0 km (1.5–2.5 mi) below sea level (BSL) in the Gaoliu (GL) area of the Nanpu sag, and the other is the Eocene subaqueous fan sandstone buried 1.5–4.5 km (1–2.8 mi) BSL in the Shengtuo (ST) area of the Dongying sag. Both sandstones consist mainly of lithic arkoses and feldspathic litharenites, and have secondary porosity formed by dissolution of feldspars. In the GL sandstones, the absolute amounts of authigenic clays and quartz cements (generally <0.5% of the rock volume) are much lower than that of the leached feldspars. Authigenic clays in the GL sandstones are mainly kaolinite, with little illite even at a high temperature (>125°C [257°F]). The low abundance of authigenic clays and quartz cements, and low pore-water salinity indicate that much of the K+, Al3+, and SiO2(aq) released from leached K-feldspars were exported from the GL sandstone system. And the extensive feldspar dissolution enhanced much porosity and permeability. In contrast, the ST sandstones with secondary pores formed by feldspar dissolution generally contain authigenic clays (kaolinite and illite) and quartz cements with almost identical volume of secondary pores. Kaolinite dominates in the ST sandstones at shallower depth (<3.1 km [2 mi] BSL), whereas illite dominates at greater depth (>3.1 km [2 mi] BSL) where temperature exceeds 125°C (257°F). The presence of abundant clays and quartz cements indicates that Al3+ and SiO2(aq) released from leached feldspars were retained in the ST sandstone system. The dominance of authigenic illite at greater depth indicates that sufficient K+ should have been retained within the sandstones for occurrence of illitization of kaolinite and feldspars. Secondary porosity in thin sections can be up to 3%, but little porosity (<0.25%) is enhanced. Primary macropores are lost as clays and quartz precipitate whereas the proportion of microporosity increases, occurring mainly between clay crystals. The overall result is that permeability is degraded. The diagenetic difference between the GL and the ST sandstones can be interpreted by assessing pore-water evolution in these two areas. The current pore waters with low salinity and negative hydrogen isotopic compositions in the GL sandstone system indicate the significant impact of meteoric water, whereas the current pore waters with high salinity and the paleofluids with positive oxygen isotopic compositions in the ST sandstone system indicate little trace of meteoric water. Access of meteoric freshwater to the GL area probably occurred during the late Oligocene to Neogene through widely developed faults in the Paleogene and Neogene strata. The low-salinity water could have been responsible for flushing of solutes derived from feldspar dissolution. As such, diagenesis in the GL sandstones is considered to have occurred in an open geochemical system, whereas with limited faults and high water salinity, the ST sandstones acted as a closed geochemical system where precipitation of kaolinite, illite, and quartz cements occurred following dissolution of feldspars.

Abstract:Understanding cement paragenesis is crucial to the study of the porosity evolution in low-permeability sandstone reservoirs. Carbon and oxygen isotope analysis with micro-drilling sampling, electron probe microanalysis, and laser Raman spectroscopy microanalysis was used to clarify the origin of cements and their relationship with reservoir quality of the Chang 8 tight sandstone reservoir in the Longdong area of the Ordos Basin. The predominant cements are chlorite, illite, kaolinite, quartz, and carbonate, which occur in 3 forms, grain rim, overgrowth, and filling of intergranular pore and intragranular dissolved pore. The quantitative paragenesis of the cements is established based on the formation temperature of cements obtained through fluid inclusion, oxygen isotope, chemical composition and Raman parameters. The main source of carbon for carbonate cements is the decarboxylation of organic matter in the adjacent mudstone interlayer. The conversion of smectite to illite and the dissolution of feldspar and previous carbonates provide Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , and Fe 3+ ions for carbonate cements and authigenic chlorite, and the authigenic chlorite rim continuously grows from the grain surface outward. The porosity reduction by the cements mainly occurs during the main hydrocarbon filling period (80–120 °C), and the reservoir belongs to the type of "hydrocarbon accumulation prior to significant porosity reduction". This study provides a new approach for studying the temporal and spatial evolution of clastic rock diagenesis.

Abstract:The Upper Miocene Huangliu sandstones of the Dongfang district are currently regarded as an important exploration target in the Yinggehai Basin. Affected by the anomalous diagenetic environments of high temperature, overpressure, and CO 2 fillings, the diagenetic evolution of the Huangliu sandstones appear complicated characteristics and subsequently exert a significant influence on reservoir development. Integrated methods employed in this study include an electron microscope, cathode luminescence, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, electron microprobe, stable isotope analysis, homogenization temperature, and physical property tests. By the comparative researches between the AF-1 and AF-2 areas of the Dongfang district, the aim of this study is to investigate the complex diagenetic modifications and their controlling effects on reservoir quality and development mechanism. With similar sedimentary features, the reservoirs in the AF-1 area exhibit slightly higher porosity than those of the AF-2 area. The permeability in the AF-1 area shows one or two orders of magnitude lower than that of the AF-2 area, and throats size distribution act as a critical factor to cause distinct diversities of permeability. In the AF-1 area, the later appearance of overpressure contributed to stronger compaction intensity and more loss of primary porosity. The dissolution induced by CO 2 -rich thermal fluids in late stage enhanced the secondary porosity significantly and improved the total porosity. However, extensive dissolution cause abundant precipitation including carbonate cement and authigenic illite in a closed diagenetic system, which lead to the decrease of reservoirs' permeability. As for the AF-2 area, earlier occurrence of overpressure restrained mechanical compaction obviously and further retarded corrosion of organic acid, which preserved high proportions of primary porosity. Due to lesser impact by CO 2 filling, the AF-2 area had a poor intensity of dissolution and cementation, and the authigenic illitization was also restrained significantly, which effectively prevented heavy damage on reservoir quality, and especially for permeability. Based on the diagenetic evolution pathways, two types of porosity evolution patterns are established. The effect degree on diagenesis by high temperature, overpressure, and CO 2 filling vary significantly between the AF-1 and AF-2 areas. The two areas show different pathways of diagenetic evolution, forming two development patterns and exhibiting different reservoir types.

Abstract:An integrated analysis of the petrographic characteristics and types and distribution of diagenetic alteration in the upper Paleozoic Benxi-Taiyuan, Shanxi, and Xiashihezi Formations provides insights into the controlling factors on variations in porosity and permeability in tight sandstones (85% of the sandstone samples display porosity values <10% and 90% of the samples exhibit permeability <1 md). Diagenetic alteration includes mesogenetic compaction, cementation by dolomite, ankerite, and quartz, dissolution of feldspar, and illitization of smectite. Eodiagenesis includes compaction, development of smectite, cementation by pore-filling quartz and disordered kaolinite, and precipitation of calcite and Fe-calcite. Chlorite and quartz preserve primary pores against damage, whereas kaolinite, illite-smectite (I/S) mixed layer, and illite significantly diminish reservoir quality via permeability reduction. Chlorite and I/S content decrease abruptly as depth increases, whereas the kaolinite content remains elevated at depth because of the complete destruction of K-feldspar. The transformation from smectite to illite provides silica ions for the widely distributed quartz overgrowths. As the depositional environment transformed from fluvial (Xiashihezi) to deltaic (Shanxi) and to epicontinental (Taiyuan and Benxi), the dissolution effect increased monotonically. Feldspar dissolution is dominant in the Shanxi Formation, whereas the Benxi and Taiyuan Formations commonly contain quartz dissolution pores. The Taiyuan Formation has markedly higher porosities than in the overlying and underlying formations, caused by strong dissolution and high silica content. The decrease in porosity in the Benxi Formation results from the extensive formation of clay minerals caused by high frequency transgressions in a transitional environment.
Reconstruction of the Diagenetic Environments of Tight Sandstone Reservoirs: A Case Study from the Tengger Formation in the Baiyinchagan Sag, Erlian Basin, Northern China

Abstract:The Lower Cretaceous Tengger Formation located in the Baiyinchagan Sag of the Erlian Basin comprises mainly deeply buried tight sandstone. The identification of high-quality reservoirs in these thickly stacked and heterogeneous units requires a comprehensive understanding of the diagenetic environmental history of the rocks. This paper reports an integrated study involving thin-section petrography, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, fluid-inclusion analysis, and vitrinite reflectance analysis of Tengger Formation sandstones with the aim of characterizing the diagenetic conditions of the reservoir rocks and providing guidance for future petroleum exploration. Observed mineral assemblages, the distribution of authigenic minerals, and the distribution and nature of pores suggest the presence of two types of diagenetic environment, acidic and alkaline, which have varied over time and vertically through the rock column. Acidic conditions are indicated by quartz overgrowths and dissolution of both feldspar and carbonate cement. In contrast, alkaline conditions are indicated by the precipitation of carbonate cement, feldspar overgrowths, quartz dissolution, and occurrences of authigenic illite and chlorite. Changes in pore fluid chemistry controlled the evolution of the diagenetic environment. The early diagenetic environment from 110 Ma to 107 Ma was syndepositional and thus controlled by the chemistry of water in depositional centers, which is interpreted to have been weakly alkaline. Significant burial that occurred at 107 Ma induced pulses of hydrothermal fluids and petroleum into the reservoir rocks, which caused a shift to an acidic diagenetic environment. From 103 Ma to 70 Ma, subsequent episodes of uplift and burial caused periodic alternation between acidic and alkaline diagenetic environments. Three distinct episodes of oil and gas charging interpreted from petrography and the homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusions played a critical role in the enhancement of porosity through time. From 70 Ma to the present, acidic diagenesis gradually weakened because of the consumption of organic acids during the process of interaction between rocks and fluids. This study demonstrates the importance of understanding the diagenetic history of reservoir rocks and provides the basis for improved reservoir characterization and optimized hydrocarbon exploration of the Tengger Formation.

Abstract:The Huangqiao oil and gas field in eastern China is unique at the coexistence of CO2 and hydrocarbon accumulations and the production of oil CO2 and sandstone reservoir quality vary largely between wells.CO2-rich fluid has substantial reformation of the reservoir.Based on these backgrounds,a set of interaction experiments within the CO2-formation water-sandstone system is conducted in closed containers from 60 ℃ to 120 ℃ and from 10MPa to 40 MPa,which correspond to the burial depth from 1500m to 4000 m.The objective is to understand the corrosion of CO2-rich fluid on the sandstone reservoir.Analytical results show that the corrosion is apparent,the corrosion mineral is mainly carbonate,and the corrosion has reached equilibrium in the solution after 72 hours.Then,the ion concentration of Ca in the equilibrium solution is two orders of magnitude higher than the other ions.The corrosion intensity has negative and positive correlations with temperature and pressure,respectively,and the pressure is the primary control.Pressure contols the solubility of CO2 in the solution,and has particular corrosion ability at relatively high temperatures.In contrast,feldspars are corroded only a little because they have not reached equilibrium.Based on the regional geology,we infer that the CO2 is derived mainly from mantle along deep-seated faults.The CO2-rich fluid migrated into the Longtan Formation sandstone along the faults,and was overburdened by extremely thick fine-grained clastics.As a consequence,a relatively closed fluid-rock interaction system with high temperature and pressure was formed.The fluid-rock interaction was strong near faults and thus the reservoir corrosion and reformation was significant,leading to great amounts of secondary pores (e.g.in the Xi 3 well).In contrast,the fluid-rock interaction was relatively weak far from faults and thus the fluid-rock interaction and the development of secondary pores were relatively weak (e.g.in the Xi 2 well).Therefore,we propose a fault-controlled model of CO2-rich fluid-rock interaction as the main mechanism controlling the physical properties of the Longtan sandstone reservoir in the study area.

Abstract:Diagenesis and pore evolution of tight sandstone reservoir is one of the most important issues surrounding clastic reservoirs. The tight sandstone of the Shanxi Formation is an important oil and gas producing layer of the Upper Paleozoic in Ordos Basin, and its densification process has an important impact on reservoir quality. This study determined the physical properties and diagenetic evolution of Shanxi Formation sandstones and quantitatively calculated the pore loss in the diagenetic process. Microscopic identification, cathodoluminescence, and a scanning electron microscope were used identify diagenesis, and the diagenesis evolution process was clarified along with inclusion analysis. In addition, reservoir quality was determined based on the identification of pore types and physical porosity. Results show that rock types are mainly sublitharenite and litharenite. The reservoir has numerous secondary pores after experiencing compaction, cementation, and dissolution. We obtained insight into the relationship between homogenous temperature and two hydrocarbon charges. The results indicated that there were two hydrocarbon charges in the Late Triassic–Early Jurassic (70–90 °C) and Middle Jurassic–Early Cretaceous (110–130 °C) before reservoir densification. The quantitative calculation of pore loss shows that the average apparent compaction, cementation, and dissolution rates are 67.36%, 22.24%, and 80.76%, respectively. Compaction directly affected the reservoir tightness, and intense dissolution was beneficial to improve the physical properties of the reservoir.

Abstract:Deeply buried sandstones in the Jurassic, Toutunhe Formation, are a crucial exploration target in the Junggar Basin, NW China, whereas, reservoir-forming process of sandstones in the Toutunhe Formation remain unknown. Focused on the tight sandstone of the Toutunhe Formation, the impacts of diagenesis and hydrocarbon charging on sandstone reservoir-forming process were clarified based on the comprehensive analysis of sedimentary characteristics, petrography, petrophysical characteristics, and fluid inclusion analysis. Three diagenetic facies developed in the Toutunhe sandstone reservoirs, including carbonate cemented facies (CCF), matrix-caused tightly compacted facies (MTCF), and weakly diagenetic reformed facies (WDF). Except the WDF, the CCF and the MTCF entered the tight state in 18 Ma and 9 Ma, respectively. There was only one hydrocarbon emplacing event in sandstone reservoir of the Toutunhe Formation, charging in 13 Ma to 8 Ma. Meanwhile, the source rock started to expel hydrocarbons and buoyancy drove the hydrocarbon via the Aika fault belt to migrate into sandstone reservoirs in the Toutunhe Formation. During the end of the Neogene, the paleo-oil reservoir in the Toutunhe Formation was destructed and hydrocarbons migrated to the sandstone reservoirs in the Ziniquanzi Formation; some paleo-oil reservoirs survived in the WDF. The burial pattern and change of reservoir wettability were major controlling factors of the sandstone reservoir-forming process. The buried pattern of the Toutunhe Formation in the western section of the southern Junggar Basin was “slow and shallow burial at early stage and rapid and deep burial at late stage”. Hence, pore capillary pressure was extremely low due to limited diagenetic reformation (average pore capillary pressures were 0.26 MPa). At the same time, high content of chlorite coating increased the lipophilicity of reservoirs. Therefore, hydrocarbons preferably charged into the WDF with low matrix content (average 4.09%), high content of detrital quartz (average 28.75%), high content of chlorite films (average 2.2%), and lower pore capillary pressures (average 0.03 MPa). The above conditions were favorable for oil and gas enrichment.

Abstract:Economically viable accumulations of hydrocarbons hosted in the Precambrian rocks are globally rare, as a protracted history available for them to escape or be destroyed due to various processes including thermal and bacterial degradations and tectonic disruption. A recent gas discovery in the late Ediacaran dolomites of the Sichuan Basin (SW China) provides an opportunity to understand the formation and preservation of ancient petroleum systems. Paleo fluid pressure-temperature-composition (P-T-X) conditions from deep burial to exhumation are evaluated from microthermometry and Raman data obtained from fluid inclusions. We identified three texturally distinct generations of gas-bearing fluid inclusion assemblages (FIAs), which delineate an operating petroleum system where gas remigrated during exhumation that followed oil cracking during deep burial. The older FIAs (types 1 and 2) show a petrographic association with bitumen and are interpreted to be the result of thermal cracking. Type 1 FIAs formed through in-situ cracking of pre-existing oil inclusions and have recorded the paleo oil charge during the middle Triassic to early Jurassic. Type 2 FIAs were trapped during the prolonged intra-reservoir oil cracking that occurred between the late Jurassic and late Cretaceous. Our pore pressure calculations indicate overpressured conditions, a result of active gas generation during thermal cracking. Lithostatic overpressures accumulated and were sustained under weak tectonic compression prior to peak burial. Type 3 FIAs have been interpreted as reflective of the gas-bearing system reactivation during exhumation. These FIAs indicate the relative reduction in the proportion of aqueous to gas inclusions, which may be due to a decrease in water saturation following gas emplacement. Uplift processes during early exhumation likely facilitated breaching of the system and remobilization of fluids, resulting in gas escape and overpressure release. The drastic increase in formation water salinity, which was documented in the fluid inclusion dataset, points to the arrival of hypersaline brine during the Eocene to Oligocene. This brine could have originated either from the lower Cambrian evaporated CaCl 2 seawater or from the dissolution of the lower-middle Triassic halite. From the late Miocene to present, progressively exhumed reservoirs may have received an influx of relatively fresh water from shallow aquifers, as shown by the correspondence between P-T-X records and present-day reservoir conditions.
