Abstract:Typical bilayer wrinkle systems employ soft elastomers as the substrates. In contrast, shape memory polymers have recently emerged as attractive alternatives. Besides the shape fixing capability, shape memory polymers distinguish from elastomers in that they are rigid at room temperature, but experience significant modulus drop upon heating. We hereby report unique aspects of shape memory polymers as the wrinkle substrate utilizing a metallic thin film as the top layer. The feasibility to create both reversible and irreversible wrinkles (and diffraction colors) on a single substrate is demonstrated. Experimental conditions are identified to create crack free wrinkles and the impact of various experimental parameters on the wrinkle wavelength and amplitude is investigated. The results suggest that the wrinkle mechanics deviate notably from the existing theories established with elastomers as the wrinkle substrates. Thus, a new theory will need to be developed in the future, taking into account of unique thermomechanical properties of the shape memory substrate and possible plastic deformation of the thin film.

Abstract:Inspired by natural wrinkled surfaces, artificial surfaces with biomimetic wrinkled structures have been widely used to improve optical properties, wettability, and antibacterial properties. However, the preparation of wrinkled structures has the disadvantages of long-time consumption and complex processes. Herein, we prepared a self-wrinkling polyurethane-acrylate (PUA) wood coating via biomimetic self-wrinkling patterns by using a light-emitting diode (LED)/excimer/mercury lamp curing system, which was capable of self-matting, anti-fingerprint and skin-tactile performance. By adjusting the irradiation intensity in the curing system, the wavelength (λ) and amplitude (A) of wrinkles on the coating surface were controlled to enhance the coating performance. After curing by the LED, excimer, and mercury lamps at energy intensities of 500, 30, and 300 mW/cm 2 respectively, the self-wrinkling coating showed excellent surface performance. The self-wrinkling coating represented low gloss of 4.1 GU at 85°, high hardness of 4H. Interestingly, the coating surface had a high hydrophobicity (104.5°) and low surface energy (29–30 mN/m) and low coefficient (COF) of friction (0.1–0.2), which were consistent with those of the human skin surface. Besides, the wrinkled structure also improved the thermal stability of the coating samples. This study provided a promising technique for the mass production of self-wrinkling coatings that could be used in wood-based panels, furniture, and leather.

Abstract:Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-derived materials have been used as functional coatings in a wide range of industrial and engineering applications owing to their appealing physical and chemical properties. However, most of them cannot harvest mechanical durability, self-healing ability and low surface energy due to the conventional chemical crosslinking method. Herein, a polymer coating featuring multifaceted functionalities is developed by facilely brush-coating isocyanate-modified PDMS (I-PDMS) on diverse substrates, in which the adjacent polymer chains are physically crosslinked by the hydrogen bonds between the urea motifs. The prepared coating can withstand 500 cycles of adhesive tape-peeling or 200 cycles of sandpaper abrasion without losing its hydrophobicity. Besides, the dynamic nature of the intermolecular hydrogen bonds leads to appreciable self-healing ability which can essentially extend the coating’s lifespan. Moreover, the I-PDMS coating possesses low surface energy, i.e., ∼ 13.1 mJ/m2 and ∼ 28.8 mJ/m2 when the PDMS Mw is ∼ 30000 and ∼ 3000, respectively. These appealing properties strongly depend on the PDMS Mw which could be attributed to the variation in mobility of the polymer chains and density of the intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Furthermore, it is found that this I-PDMS coating can effectively mitigate corrosion and biofouling on metal substrates, implying its great potential as a protective coating in practical engineering processes. Our work offers a promising approach to prepare multifunctional PDMS-based coatings with considerable application prospect.

Abstract:QR-decomposition accelerators are attractive SoC components for many applications with a wide range of specifications. A new family of highly area- and energy-efficient, modular two-way linear-array QRD architectures based on the Givens algorithm and CORDIC rotations is proposed. The template architecture allows for implementations of real-/complex-valued and integer/floating-point QRDs. An accurate algebraic cost model enables cross-level optimization over architecture, micro-architecture and circuit level using a rich set of parameters. Quantitative results for exemplary applications are presented for implementations in 40-nm CMOS, proving the significant improvement of efficiency.
Fabrication of Self‐Wrinkling Polymer Films with Tunable Patterns through an Interfacial‐Fuming‐Induced Surface Instability Process

Abstract:Inspired by the superglue fuming method for fingerprint collection, this study developed a novel interfacial‐fuming‐induced surface instability process to generate wrinkled patterns on polymeric substrates. The aforementioned technique can be easily applied to architectures with complex outer morphologies and inner surfaces, thereby enabling the construction of surface patterns under ambient conditions without vacuum limitations or precise process control. Inspired by the superglue fuming method for fingerprint collection, this study developed a novel interfacial‐fuming‐induced surface instability process to generate wrinkled patterns on polymeric substrates. High‐electronegativity groups are introduced on the substrate surface to initiate the polymerization of monomer vapors, such as ethyl cyanoacrylate, which results in the formation of a stiff poly(ethyl cyanoacrylate) capping layer. Moreover, interfacial polymerization resulted in the covalent bonding of the substrate, which led to the volumetric shrinkage of the composite and the accumulation of compressive strain. This process ultimately resulted in the development and stabilization of wrinkled surface morphologies. The authors systematically examined parameters such as the modulus of the epoxy substrate, prestrain, the flow rate of fuming, and operating temperature. The aforementioned technique can be easily applied to architectures with complex outer morphologies and inner surfaces, thereby enabling the construction of surface patterns under ambient conditions without vacuum limitations or precise process control. This study is the first to combine fuming‐induced interfacial polymerization with surface instability to create robust wrinkles. The proposed method enables the fabrication of intricate microwrinkled patterns and has considerable potential for use in various practical applications, including microfluidics, optical components, bioinspired adhesive devices, and interfacial engineering.

Abstract:Wrinkled surfaces exist widely in nature and organic living world, such as plants, insects, and skin. The optical, wettability and mechanical properties of materials can be enhanced by artificially preparing regular microstructure on the surface of materials. In this study, a novel self-wrinkled polyurethane-acrylate (PUA) wood coating with self-matting, anti-fingerprint performance and skin-tactile feeling curing by excimer lamp (EX) and ultraviolet (UV) was prepared. The wrinkles were formed on the surface of PUA coating at microscopic level after excimer and UV mercury lamp irradiation. The width and height of the wrinkles on the coating surface can be controlled to adjust the coating performance by changing the curing energy. When the PUA coating samples were cured by excimer lamp and UV mercury lamp with curing energy of 25-40 mJ cm-2 and 250-350 mJ cm-2, the excellent coating performances were observed. The gloss value of self-wrinkled PUA coating at 20° and 60° were less than 3 GU, while at 85° was 6.5 GU, which satisfied the demanding of matting coating. Besides, the fingerprints on the coating samples could disappear in 30 s and could still have anti-fingerprint performance after 150 times of anti-fingerprint tests. Furthermore, the pencil hardness, abrasion quantity and adhesion of self-wrinkled PUA coating were 3H, 0.045 g and 0 grade respectively. Finally, the self-wrinkled PUA coating has excellent skin-tactile feeling for touching. The coating can be applied to wood substrates, and has potential application in the field of wood-based panels, furniture and leather.

Abstract:Mobile screens and optical glass devices encounter formidable engineering and technological bottlenecks in achieving irreversible restoration from surface mechanical scratches. Conventional methodologies involving glass surface micromachining and coatings technology have proven inadequate in effectively addressing the multiple recovery of optical transparency. Here, the synergistic integration principle of inorganic rigid cage-like structures and organic flexible chain segments is employed. A bionic "octopus" textured surface pattern, featuring ordered arrays of nano nodes acting as "post stations" and micro-nano wrinkles serving as "channels", is one-step fabricated by a dipping-curing coating process. The polymer coating exhibits smooth, transparent, and multiple-self-healing function with patterned antifouling. Introducing and matching the coating onto mobile screens, transparency of wiped/scratched glass is significantly restored by the synergistic use of protonic/non-protonic solvent systems in a dipping-assisted healing process. Intriguingly, the coating achieves surface/internal pattern reconstruction along with excellent transparency, antifouling, and interfacial adhesion mechanical properties, characterized by surface micro-nano textures and internal micro-nano spheres organization, after undergoing multiple treatments with the biocompatible disinfectant and cleaning agent ethanol. In the future, it is expected to develop highly versatile engineering materials for mobile screens, optical lenses and automotive glass, enabling multiple self-healing, self-cleaning, and antifouling properties with broad industrial applications.

Abstract:Introducing wrinkling or rough features into substrates is of great practical significance to construct various functional surfaces. Due to the sensitivity of assembled units towards environmental stimuli, the internals of layer-by-layer films can be readily adjusted to generate various micro- and nanostructures. We previously described a self-roughening polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) to facilitate the introduction of surface microstructures. In the present work, the growth process of PEI/PAA multilayer films was investigated and the mean size of the surface microstructures was found to increase linearly with the film thickness. The spontaneous formation of these surface features can be attributed to swelling-induced film deformation during the assembling process, which is similar to the surface wrinkling of hydrogels undergoing a volume phase transition. When exposed to saturated humidity, the internal stress as well as the surface microstructures can be diminished spontaneously, leading to a flat surface over the substrates. Given the effect of the underlying film thickness on the characteristic wavelength of the surface wrinkles, multiscale surface microstructures can be readily realized by means of spatially presetting the distribution of the film thickness.

Abstract:Nowadays, many self-healing strategies used in recovery of surface functionality have drawn much attention to improving durability of materials. In this study, a self-replenishing hydrophobic surface was constructed at low temperature with crosslinkable PDMS-g-WPU emulsions. The PDMS-g-WPU emulsion was prepared by step-growth addition polymerization. And the influence of grafted PDMS content on surface recovery was discussed. AFM, XRD and DMA results all demonstrated the biphasic microphase separation of PDMS-g-WPU films. When the mass proportion of PDMS to WPU was 25 wt%, the copolymer film reserved the largest number of PDMS microspheres, and optimal surface replenishing ability was obtained. Meanwhile, the copolymer films showed stable hydrophobicity against abrasion by sandpaper, UV irradiation and soaking in acid solution, as well as exhibited significant anti-icing performance. Additionally, a self-cleaning coating precursor was easily fabricated by spraying the mixture of PDMS-g-WPU emulsion (WPS25)/BaSO 4 /PTFE particles. This hydrophobic precursor could turn into a self-cleaning coating through abrasion based on the self-replenishment of WPS25. After 100 abrasion cycles under 4.4 kPa, the coating maintained WCA of 142.5° and sliding angle (SA) of 31.8°. Therefore, this graft copolymer could be applied in complicated work conditions and satisfied the need for practical applications.

Abstract:Unique pattern morphologies created by surface instability are a versatile platform for controlling surface functionality. In this work, simultaneous surface wrinkling and hydrophobization of organic coatings by directly reacting with diffused propyl trichlorosilane (PTCS) from gas phase was demonstrated. By varying the initial coating type, various surface morphologies were obtained, showing different interactions with water droplets, demonstrating the high tunability of the method to achieve important surface functions, including rose petal and lotus effects. It was found that reaction between the absorbed water in the coating caused the hydrolysis of PTCS and their subsequent self-condensation to form siloxanes within the coating, which contributed to the large volume expansion and eventually triggered the wrinkling process. This method is independent of the substrate type and offers a great advantage in producing functional coatings using eco-friendly, VOC-free solutions.

Abstract:Inspired from human skin, micro- and nano-wrinkled wood surface with skin-tactile performance was designed and developed using a waterborne UV-curable polyurethane acrylate coating and cellulose nofibers (CNF). To further improve the properties, the CNF was diacetylated to D-CNF and further grafted with a hyperbranched polymer containing rich end amino groups (HB-CNF). The surface structure and chemical reactions were characterized, and the skin-tactile performance of the coating was comprehensively investigated. The HB-CNF exhibited excellent dispersion in the coating, and extensive reactions occurred between the two through the -NH2 and terminal -NCO groups, resulting in much improved mechanical properties and durability. Micro-wrinkles with a width of approximately 12-15 μm and a height of 8-14 μm were created, and nano-protrusions of wrinkles ranging from to 50-100 nm were obtained. The coated surface was hydrophobic and exhibited high resilience after compression, with a gloss of 3.3 GU at an incident angle of 60° and a static friction coefficient of 0.26, both of which were similar to those of human skin. The results presented an effective strategy for high-performance wood products with a good feeling, which is helpful to improve the market competitiveness and meet the people's pursuit of a better life.

Abstract:Wrinkling and buckling of nano-films on the compliant substrate are always induced due to thermal deformation mismatch.This paper proposes effective means to control the surface wrinkling of thin film on the compliant substrate,which exploits the curvatures of the curve cracks designed on the stiff film.The procedures of the method are summarized as:1)curve patterns are fabricated on the surface of PDMS(Polydimethylsiloxane)substrate and then the aluminum film with the thickness of several hundred nano-meters is deposited on the substrate;2)the curve patterns are transferred onto the aluminum film and lead to cracking of the film along the curves.The cracking redistributes the stress in the compressed film on the substrate;3)on the concave side of the curve,the wrinkling of the film surface is suppressed to be identified as shielding effect and on the convex side the wrinkling of the film surface is induced to be identified as inductive effect.The shielding and inductive effects make the dis-ordered wrinkling and buckling controllable.This phenomenon provides a potential application in the fabrication of flexible electronic devices.

Abstract:<p>Spontaneous wrinkled surfaces in nature usually possess unique physical and chemical properties. Inspired by nature and stimulated by practical application, artificial wrinkle patterns have received increasing interest recently. Here, the controllable heterogeneous wrinkles in metal films deposited on polydimethylsiloxane substrates by combination of mechanical loading and heat treatment is reported. It is found that the wrinkles are spontaneously localized at small strain condition due to the uneven distribution of wrinkle amplitudes on the film surface. The morphological features and underlying mechanisms of such wrinkles are investigated based on the strain theory. The friction property is found to be well controlled by the aspect ratio and orientation of the wrinkle patterns. Complex 2D wrinkle array is also achieved by applying heat treatment and mechanical compression in sequence. This study may broaden the knowledge of spontaneous heterogeneous wrinkles in film‐substrate system and provide a novel way to tailor various wrinkle patterns via independently tuning annealing temperature and mechanical strain.</p>

Abstract:A stiff film bonded to a compliant substrate is susceptible to surface wrinkling when it is subjected to in-plane compression. Prevention of surface wrinkling is essential in many cases to maintain the integrity and functionality of this kind of system. Here we report a simple versatile technique to restrain surface wrinkling of an amorphous poly(p-aminoazobenzene) (PAAB) film by visible light irradiation. The key idea is to use the combined effects of photosoftening of the PAAB film and the stress release induced by the reversible photoisomerization. The main finding given by experiments and dimensional analysis is that the elastic modulus Ef of the film is well modulated by the ratio of light intensity and the release rate, i.e., I/V. Furthermore, the explicit solution describing the correlation of I/V with Ef is derived for the first time. The difference between the calculated critical wrinkling strain εc,t based on Ef and the experimentally measured value εc enables us to quantitatively evaluate the release amount of the compressive stress in the film. These key solutions provide a simple strategy to prevent the undesired surface wrinkling. Additionally, they allow us to propose a wrinkling-based technique to investigate photoinduced changes in the mechanical properties of azo-containing materials.

Abstract:An effective superhydrophobic and self-healing coating is fabricated on building materials. This coating can restore its properties at room temperature after being damaged by rubber or acid. The coating can not only be directly applied on different substrates, but also be used for anti-corrosion. The corrosion current of the coated iron plate is reduced by 57.1%, and the corrosion potential is increased by 3.9%.

Abstract:The decaying mechanism of air cushion on superhydrophobic surfaces deserves further investigation upon immersion conditions, which could contribute to a clear understanding to the non-wettability deterioration process. In this work, we constructed a chemically robust and self-healing superhydrophobic coating by spraying method of polybenzoxazine (PBA) particles and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) paste, without further modification by low surface-energy and toxic fluorocarbon resin. The size of PBA particles was regulated by adjusting the ball-milling rate to obtain a mixture of micro-nano particles, then the PBA particles were blended with PDMS and sprayed on a mild steel plate to fabricate all-organic superhydrophobic coatings. Laser confocal microscope and FT-IR spectra verified that the hierarchical micro-nano topography on PBA/PDMS coatings contributed more than the low surface-energy modification to the superhydrophobicity. Even after the superhydrophobicity of PBA/PDMS coating was damaged due to deterioration of the micro-nano structures, it could be easily healed by surface friction on the PBA/PDMS coatings thanks to its three-dimensional superhydrophobic property. Visualization monitoring on the air cushion trapped on PBA/PDMS coatings demonstrated that it failed from several points initially, then expanding to local up to the whole surface finally. It is expected that this work may provide a promising fabrication strategy of superhydrophobic coatings, as well as a preliminary understanding of the mechanism of superhydrophobicity loss.

Abstract:Developing intelligent materials with integrated ultra-high-performance damage monitoring and repair functions is of paramount significance for broadening the application of the latest generation of smart materials. Here, inspired by spider silk and biological skin, we embedded multiple hydrogen bonding motifs and rigid alicyclic groups with attached damage monitoring sensors in bio-based polyurethanes to create bio-based elastomers with exceptional mechanical properties combined with repair and damage monitoring functionalities. Benefiting from the abundance of multiple hydrogen bonding elements within the polyester backbone for fracture and remodeling as external energy dissipation, and the contribution of asymmetric alicyclic groups embedded in hard domains. The elastomer possesses exceptional toughness (583 MJ·m −3 ) and tensile strength (43 MPa), the elongation at break point is 2600 %, and self-healing (86 % at 60 °C for 6 h), environmental adaptability, and recyclability, thereby achieving the preparation of ultra-tough self-healing elastomeric materials. Simultaneously, the internally embedded sensors enable the localization and monitoring of damage through visually observable means, such as quenching and discoloration. The elastomer recovers well in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution and provides corrosion protection (9.23 × 10 7 Ω·cm 2 even after 50 days of immersion), achieving the integration of ultra-high mechanical performance coating materials with damage warning and repair functions. Surface Wrinkling with Memory for Programming Adhesion and Wettability

Abstract:Modulating surface wrinkling is important for a variety of engineering applications. It has been known for more than two decades that the wavelength of surface wrinkles occurring in a metal film–soft polymer system scales linearly with the deposited film thickness. In the current experimental study of ultrathin gold film (0.2–8 nm) deposition on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), an unexplored thickness-dependent wrinkling phenomenon is found. By manipulating the deposition sequence as a degree of freedom for tailoring surface topography, we discovered a morphology memory effect where the wrinkle evolution in the subsequent deposition step inherits the surface pattern already formed in the previous step. Moreover, a stepwise deposition targeting 1 nm thick film can lead to 1 order of magnitude higher surface roughness than the one in the continuous deposition. By programming the sequences within 8 nm Au deposition, a surface strain map varying drastically from 0.2% to 27% is realized. Instructed by the strain map, we show the great potentials of tailored wrinkles in alternating surface wettability, enhancing surface Raman scattering, and on-demand tuning of surface adhesion.

Abstract:Inspired by nature, comprehensive understanding and ingenious utilization of the self-organized wrinkling behaviors of the sandwiched multilayer bonded on substrates are important for engineering and/or functional laminated devices design. Herein, we report a facile and effective strategy to regulate the wrinkles morphology evolution and the resultant hierarchical surface micropatterns on azobenzene-based laminated multilayers by visible-light irradiation. Revealed by systematic experiments, the photocontrolled dynamic wrinkle evolutions are triggered by the reversible photoisomerization of azobenzene in the top azopolymer film and are strongly dependent on the intermediate photoinert layers (e.g., polystyrene and oxygen plasma-induced SiO x layer) with the wrinkle-reinforcing effect or the stress relaxation acceleration effect. Interestingly, large-area well-defined hierarchical surface wrinkle patterns could be fabricated on the multilayers upon selective exposure. In the unexposed region, the wrinkles evolved into highly oriented patterns, whereas in the exposed region, they were fully erased or evolved into smaller-wavelength wrinkles. This study not only sheds light on the morphological evolution of the wrinkling laminated composites in engineering and nature but also paves a new avenue to conveniently and controllably realize the hierarchical stimulus-responsive surface patterns.

Abstract:Lightweight, long lifetime, and flexible polymer membrane-based structures, which are tightly folded on the ground and then unfolded in space, suffer from repeated bending before launching and fatal erosion on exposure to atomic oxygen (AO) in a low Earth orbit (LEO). Although various AO-resistant coatings have been developed, a coating that can simultaneously meet the critical requirements for the mechanical robustness and long-term protection of polymer membranes is rare. Here, we fabricated a coating with mechanical robustness and long-term space endurance, starting from an inorganic polymer precursor. A hybrid coating with a nanoscale polymer/silica bicontinuous phase is first prepared on the ground, which exhibits outstanding flexibility and excellent abrasion resistance. Then, the coating shows an in situ self-evolution behavior under AO and ultraviolet (UV) synergism to afford dense and crack-free silica coating with outstanding endurance.
