Abstract:The fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda , is a voracious pest of cereals native to the Americas and which invaded Africa in 2016. Chemical control is the main management option, which however remains ineffective and unsustainable. Fungal endophytes are increasingly used as alternative for the management of insect pests of economic importance. This study assessed the potential of eight endophytic fungal isolates to colonize maize plant and their ability to promote seedlings growth through seed and foliar inoculations, as well as their suppressive effects on FAW. Fungal colonization rates of different plant parts by the endophytes varied as per the inoculation methods. Beauveria bassiana ICIPE 279 colonized more than 60% of all the seedling parts while B . bassiana G1LU3 only colonized stem (25%) and leaf (5%) tissues through foliar inoculation. Trichoderma atroviride F2S21, T. asperellum M2RT4, T. harzianum F2R41, Trichoderma sp. F2L41, Hypocrea lixii F3ST1 and Fusarium proliferatum F2S51 successfully colonized all the plant parts and therefore were selected and further evaluated through seed inoculation for their endophytic persistence, effect on plant growth, and pathogenicity to Spodoptera frugiperda immature and adult stages. Weekly assessment showed varied effect of the endophytes on maize plant growth parameters compared to the control. During the first week, percentage colonization of the plant parts ranges between 90%–100%, 65%–100%, and 60%–100%, in the roots, stems, and leaves, respectively for all the five tested isolates. However, the colonization pattern/rates significantly decreased over time for H. lixii F3ST1 in the stems and leaves, and for T. harzianum F2R41 in the leaves and for T. asperellum M2RT4 in the roots. In addition, T. harzianum F2R41 outperformed all the other isolates in boosting the plant height, whereas H. lixii F3ST1 and T. asperellum M2RT4 outperformed all the other isolates in increasing the wet and dry shoots weight. Furthermore, the number of egg masses laid on endophytically-colonized maize plants varied among the treatments. Trichoderma asperellum M2RT4 and H. lixii F3ST1 endophytically-colonized maize plants significantly reduced the number of egg masses and the defoliation/feeding rates of the pest compared to the control. Additionally, T. harzianum F2R41 had the highest negative impact on the pupation and adult emergence of S. frugiperda with a female-biased sex ratio. Our findings indicate that T. asperellum M2RT4, T. harzianum F2R41, and H. lixii F3ST1 hold a potential to be developed as endophytic-fungal-based biopesticides for sustainable management of S. frugiperda and as plant growth promoters.

Abstract:Background and Objective: In Cote d'Ivoire, maize is the second most important cereal crop after rice. However, fall armyworm, which is now the most important pest of this plant, is found throughout Africa and Cote d’Ivoire. This study aimed to study the biological cycle of S. frugiperda and to identify natural enemies and entomopathogenic fungi to counter the spread of this pest in maize crops in Cote d'Ivoire. Materials and Methods: Regular monitoring of maize plots set up in three agroecological zones was carried out. This allowed to collect dead larvae of the pest, to capture predators of the pest and to collect live larvae of the pest for rearing in the laboratory. Results: The results showed that the complete biological cycle of S. frugiperda reared at a temperature of 24-26°C and relative humidity of 60-63% is approximately 54 days, with an average of about 39.79±4.59 days. The sex ratio is in favour of the males which were more numerous than the females. The identification of natural enemies revealed the presence of four main predators which are Doru sp. (Dermaptera: Forficulidae), Hymenoptera Sphecidae and Heteroptera Reduviidae Rhynocoris rapax and Rhynocoris segmentarus. The culture of dead larvae on PDA medium allowed isolation and identification of entomopathogenic fungi Penicillium sp., Metarhizium sp., and Fausarium sp., causing the death of this pest in the plots. Conclusion: The life cycle of Spodoptera frugiperda is about 40 days and four main predators and three entomopathogenic fungi of fall armyworm have been identified in Cote d'Ivoire.
Combining insect pathogenic fungi and a pheromone trap for sustainable management of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Abstract:Fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a key invasive pest of maize and other crops in Africa. Entomopathogenic fungi play an important role in regulating the immature stages of this invasive pest as opposed to synthetic pesticides that are hazardous to human, environment and biodiversity. To tackle the adult stage of the pest (the moth) and to improve on the application strategy of the fungal-based biopesticides, this study evaluated the effect of various entomopathogenic fungi isolates on S. frugiperda moths. Twenty-two isolates (16 Metarhizium anisopliae and 6 Beauveria bassiana) were screened in the laboratory to assess their pathogenicity and virulence against S. frugiperda moths. The compatibility of the most pathogenic isolates with S. frugiperda pheromone FALLTRACT lure, the horizontal transmission of the inoculum among S. frugiperda moths, and the effect on oviposition were also determined under laboratory conditions. All 22 fungal isolates screened were pathogenic to the moths, but the mortality varied significantly among the isolates (P < 0.0001) seven days post-treatment. Beauveria bassiana ICIPE 621 and M. anisopliae ICIPE 7 outperformed all the other isolates by causing 100% mortality of the moths with the lowest LT50 values of 3.6 ± 0.1 and 3.9 ± 0.0 days, respectively. Both isolates were also found compatible with FALLTRACT lure, as the lure had no effect on the conidial germination in the laboratory. Male and female moths were able to horizontally transmit conidia of both fungal isolates to untreated moths, causing high mortality of S. frugiperda in 'donor' and 'recipient' groups. In addition, the oviposition, hatchability of eggs and longevity of larvae were significantly affected on the fungal infected females. Although single moths still retained high conidial numbers 72 h post-inoculation, the number of conidia decreased with time. These results suggest that ICIPE 7 and ICIPE 621 could be used in combination with S. frugiperda pheromone in an autodissemination approach to suppress S. frugiperda population.
Isolation, morphological characterization, and screening virulence of Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium robertsii fungal isolates o n Galleria mellonella

Abstract:Background: Entomopathogenic fungi exists naturally in plants as an asymptote and have the potential to reduce the population of insect pests through indirect interactions. This study was conducted to detect and characterize the endophytic fungi Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium robertsii from the rhizosphere soil of tomato plants and their virulence effect on Galleria melonella. Methods: From the rhizosphere soil of 40 tomato fields, three Beauveria bassiana and seven Metarhizium robertsii isolates were isolated using the galleria bait method. All fungi isolate were morphologically characterized by their colony color, shape, and surface texture. Isolates with the highest percentages of germination, conidial yield, and radial growth were selected, and their virulence was evaluated on second instar larvae of Galleria melonella under laboratory conditions. Results: In this study, Beauveria bassiana showed white colony color and aseptate hyphae, whereas Metarhizium robertsii showed dark green to light green colony color and septate hyphal structures. Maximum spore production and conidial length were obtained by Beauveria bassiana isolate APPRC-27 with 2.67x10 7 spores ml -1 and 3.24 µm, respectively. Colony radial growth rates ranged from 1.73 to 3.24 mm day -1. The results revealed that the highest mortality rate of Galleria melonella (100%) was obtained by Metarhizium robertsii isolates K-61 and K-102 at a concentration of 1x10 8 conidial ml -1 at 7 days post-inoculation. The lowest mortality rate was registered by Metarhizium robertsii isolate RST-11. Conclusions: In the present study, isolates that produced the most spores and had the highest germination rates were the most virulent to Galleria mellonella second instar larvae. Therefore, virulent entomopathogenic fungi, Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium robertsii, are promising bioagents for the control of insect pests.

Abstract:Background: 'The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda', represents a significant threat to maize production, a major staple crop in Asian countries. Methods: In pursuit of more effective control of this insect pest, our study assessed the physiological and biochemical effects of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae against the larvae of S. frugiperda. Results: Results revealed that, following nine days of treatment, a high concentration of conidia (1.5x107 conidia/mL-1) was toxic to all stages of larvae (second to fifth instar), resulting in 97% mortality of the second instar, 89% mortality of the third instar, 77% mortality of the fourth instar, and 72% mortality of fifth instar. All larval instars were found to have dose-dependent mortality effects. Treated S. frugiperda larvae further displayed significant physiological, morphological, and behavioral changes. Here, treated larvae displayed significantly lower levels of acetylcholinesterase, α-carboxylesterase, and β-carboxylesterase enzyme activity when compared to control groups. Treated larvae underwent an outward morphological change as the result of a decrease in the exterior cuticle of the anal papillae and a demelanization of the interior cuticle. Treated larvae also exhibited abnormal feeding behaviors as a consequence of the negative impact of conidia treatment on the neuromuscular system. Investigation into the effect of M. anisopliae on the non-target organism, the earthworm Eudrilus eugeniae, revealed that M. anisopliae conidia did not produce significant pathogenicity following three days of treatment. Furthermore, histological analysis revealed no significant effect of the entomopathogenic fungi on the gut tissue of the non-target organism. Conclusion: This study highlights the potential of M. anisopliae in the control of S. frugiperda.

Abstract:Essential oils of the Lamiaceae Ocimum gratissimum and Ocimum canum, the Poaceae Cymbopogon citratus and nardus and a Rutaceae Citrus sp. of known chemical compositions were experimented. The evaluation of the insecticidal potential of the essential oils was done by the method of topical application of the test solutions, on the L1‐L2 stage larvae from the first generation of S. frugiperda obtained after rearing in an air‐conditioned room. Lethal concentrations (LC10, LC50 and LC90) were determined after 48 h. The essential oil of O. gratissimum was the most effective with the lowest lethal concentrations (LC10 = 0.91%, LC50 = 1.91% and LC90 = 3.92%). The least toxic oil to larvae was Citrus sp. (LC10 = 5.44%, LC50 = 20.50% and LC90 = 77.41%). Biological insecticides based on these essential oils, particularly O. gratissimum, could be formulated to provide sustained protection of maize crops against S. frugiperda larvae.

Effectiveness of Entomopathogenic Fungi on Immature Stages and Feeding Performance of Fall Armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Larvae

Abstract:Maize is a major staple crop in China, and the sustainable productivity of this primary crop has been recently threatened by fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, invasion. The five fungal isolates, Aspergillus sp. BM-3 and SE-2-1, Cladosporium tenuissimum SE-10, Penicillium citrinum CTD-24, and Beauveria bassiana ZK-5 were assessed for their efficacy in causing mortality against first to sixth instar eggs and neonate larvae seven days post-treatment, and their effects on the feeding performance of sixth instar S. frugiperda larvae at 48 h post-treatment at three concentrations (1 × 106, 1 × 107, and 1 × 108 conidia mL−1) were also assessed. The six instar S. frugiperda larvae were not susceptible to the five tested fungal isolates. However, B. bassiana ZK-5 caused the highest egg mortality of 40, 70, and 85.6% at 1 × 106, 1 × 107, and 1 × 108 conidia mL−1, respectively, followed by P. citrinum CTD-24 (30.6, 50, and 75.6%) and C. tenuissimum SE-10 (25.6, 40, and 55.6%). In addition, B. bassiana ZK-5 caused the highest neonate mortality of 54.3% at 1 × 108 conidia mL−1. B. bassiana ZK-5 and P. citrinum CTD-24 caused cumulative mortality, including 93.3 and 83.3% mortality of eggs and neonates, respectively, at 1 × 108 conidia mL−1. Furthermore, B. bassiana ZK-5 reduced the feeding efficacy of first to third instar S. frugiperda larvae by 66.7 to 78.6%, while P. citrinum CTD-24 and C. tenuissimum SE-10 reduced larval feeding by 48.3 to 57.1% at 1 × 108 conidia mL−1. However, these fungal isolates were less potent in reducing the feeding activity of fourth to sixth instar S. frugiperda larvae (>46% with B. bassiana at 48 h post-treatment). The tested fungal isolates could play an essential role as microbial biopesticides in suppressing the S. frugiperda population in China after further investigations on their efficacy are obtained in the field.

Abstract:The development of effective pest management strategies for Spodoptera frugiperda is a high priority for crop protection across its invasive ranges. Here, we examined six Beauveria and five Metarhizium fungal isolates against this pest. Two Beauveria isolates (B-0571, B-1311) induced high mortality toward 3rd and 6th instar caterpillars and adults. For B-0571 mortality was 82.81 ± 5.75%, 61.46 ± 6.83%, and 93.75 ± 3.61%, and 73.72 ± 2.51%, 71.88 ± 5.41%, and 97.92 ± 2.08% for B-1311, with deaths in caterpillars largely occurring under 24 h (3rd instar control 0.74 ± 0.33%, B-0571 73.96 ± 7.85% and B-1311 62.08 ± 3.67%; 6th instar control 0%, B-0571 66.67% ± 11.02% and B-1311 62.5% ± 9.55%). Infection from both Beauveria isolates fully prevented reproduction in surviving S. frugiperda females. In contrast, all five Metarhizium isolates tested and the remaining four Beauveria isolates exhibited lower virulence. The discovery of two highly virulent Beauveria fungal isolates to S. frugiperda opens avenues to develop novel biological control tools against this highly invasive pest.
Lethal effect of Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae, and Paecilomyces fumosoroseus on the eggs of Tetranychus cinnabarinus (Acari: Tetranychidae) with a description of a mite egg bioassay system

Abstract:Fungal biocontrol agents, including 10 isolates of Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae, and Paecilomyces fumosoroseus were bioassayed for their lethal effects on the eggs of the carmine spider mite, Tetranychus cinnabarinus. The eggs were naturally laid on detached fava bean leaves on agar in petri dishes at 25°C under a photophase of 12:12 L:D. Suspensions of aerial conidia produced on rice were sprayed onto the leaves, yielding three conidial concentrations (No. conidia/mm2) from low to high for each of the fungal isolates with 3 or 4 replicates (30–65 eggs/leaf or replicate) at each concentration. During a 12-day observation period after spray, the infected eggs shrunk in shape, then turned orange-brown for B. bassiana and P. fumosoroseus or dark-gray for M. anisopliae, and eventually had outgrowths of the sprayed fungus when maintained under moist conditions. Egg mortalities caused by fungal infection varied over time but had no change from day 8 or 9 onward. Differences of the mortalities on day 9 were significant among the fungal species or isolates tested. Based on the LC50 estimates determined by the concentration–mortality relationships of all isolates from probit analysis, B. bassiana Bb2860 with an LC50 of 548conidia/mm2 was highly infectious to T. cinnabarinus eggs, followed by P. fumosoroseus Pfr116 (848conidia/mm2) and Pfr153 (913conidia/mm2). Two M. anisopliae isolates with LC50s of 1717 and 1985conidia/mm2 were inferior to the three isolates. The other isolates were poor or very poor in ovicidal activity. Our results confirmed the ovicidal activity of the three fungal species and suggested the feasibility to search for more ovicidal isolates from fungal species that may serve as biocontrol agents against spider mites such as T. cinnabarinus. The mite egg bioassay system developed in this study will be useful towards this goal.
Isolation and identification of Metarhizium guizhouense Xct1 and its pathogenicity to Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Abstract:Background The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is one of the most destructive invasive pests causing serious damage to maize crops in China. At present, the use of chemical pesticides is the main method to prevent and control S. frugiperda . However, the excessive use of chemical pesticides not only causes toxicity in humans and animals but also pollutes the environment and causes public harm. In this context, the present study aimed to isolate, identify and evaluate the pathogenicity of the native strain of Metarhizium guizhouense against eggs, larvae and pupae of S. frugiperda under laboratory conditions. Results The fungal isolate was identified as M. guizhouense (Xct1) based on its morphological and molecular characteristics by sequencing ITS, β-tubulin and EF1-α gene. Meanwhile, the fungal isolate was highly pathogenic to eggs of the S. frugiperda , at the highest concentration of 1 × 10 8 spores/ml, the cumulative egg hatching rate was only 8.33% at 10 days post exposure. After 10 days of exposure to the highest concentration of 1 × 10 8 spores/ml, the LC 50 values for the first–fifth larval instars of S. frugiperda were 8.12 × 10 4 , 1.11 × 10 5 , 5.55 × 10 5 , 3.87 × 10 6 and 1.43 × 10 7 spores/ml, respectively. Conclusions The pathogenicity of M. guizhouense Xct1 to S. frugiperda larvae gradually decreased with increasing the developmental stages. Metarhizium guizhouense Xct1 was more pathogenic to egg and younger larvae of S. frugiperda . This provides a basis for determining the optimal period of control.

Evaluation of key parameters for developing a Metarhizium rileyi-based biopesticide against Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in maize: laboratory, greenhouse, and field trials

Abstract:Background: The entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium rileyi is known to cause natural infections in some caterpillars. In this multiyear study, we carried out laboratory, greenhouse and three field trials with the aim of developing a sustainable option for control of the fall armyworm (FAW) in maize. Association of M. rileyi with Spodoptera frugiperda baculovirus (SfMNPV) and delivery strategies were also investigated. Results: The selected isolate (CG381) was effective in the laboratory at a low concentration (~ 4 × 103 conidia cm-2 ), killing >95% of FAW larvae within 8 days. In the greenhouse assay, applications of conidia suspended in water or as dry powder in maize whorls (~ 6.3 × 106 conidia per plant) produced similar larval mortalities (88%-96%). In the field trials, conventional spraying of unformulated conidia (0.6 and 1.2 × 1012 conidia ha-1 ) caused low larval mortalities (27-31%). Simultaneous application of either unformulated or oil-based formulations of M. rileyi conidia and S. frugiperda baculovirus (SfMNPV) to plant rows caused larval mortalities comparable with each of the pathogens applied alone. However, when a formulation containing both pathogens was sprayed directly into the whorls, the overall mortality of S. frugiperda larvae due to pathogens (mostly to M. rileyi infections) reached ~ 59%, twofold higher than the other treatments with conventional spraying, whereas in the control, the overall mortality was only 1%. Conclusion: Optimizing exposure of S. frugiperda larvae to an inoculum of virulent entomopathogens through directed applications to maize whorls is critical to produce satisfactory mortality levels and is promising for integrated pest management.
Bio-Efficacy of Fusarium humuli and Fusarium incarnatum (Hypocreales: Nectriaceae) Against Larvae of Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Under Controlled Conditions

Abstract:Spodoptera frugiperda has impaired the productivity of staple crops in Tanzania since it was first reported in 2017. The overutilization of synthetic insecticides as an immediate remedy has led to new ecological problems along effects on public health. Using entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) is perceived as a safer way, and therefore, Fusarium incarnatum (Vw3) and Fusarium humuli (Vw5) from the SUA germplasm collection were tested against S. frugiperda larvae at levelled concentrations; C1, C2 and C3 alongside 0.1% Triton X-100 and Banophos 720 EC (20 ml/20 L) as negative (C-) and positive (C+) controls, respectively. The findings showed C+ inflicted the highest death rates (84% and 97% for Vw3 and Vw5, respectively), followed by C1 (48.8% and 55.5% for Vw3 and Vw5, respectively) and C2 (22.2%, 28.8% for Vw3 and Vw5, respectively). Moreover, C3 inflicted mortalities by 11.1% and 12.2% for Vw3 and Vw5 respectively, while C- inflicted mortalities by 7.7% and 1.1% for Vw3 and Vw5, respectively. Significant differences were observed in concentrations and ages of the insects. However, more studies are recommended to validate their safety and compatibility with other IPM components prior to qualifying the EPF for the control of S. frugiperda.

Abstract:An aphid-derived isolate of Beauveria bassiana (SGBB8601) and Verticillium lecanii (DNVL8701) were bioassayed against six species of globally distributed cereal-infesting aphids under controlled conditions. Aphids were immersed in conidial suspensions at concentrations ranging from 104 to 108 conidia/ml, each concentration being replicated six times with 20 aphids treated per replicate. Pathogenicity of both fungal species was confirmed on all the aphids tested, but in most cases, B. bassiana was more virulent than V. lecanii . The LC50 values for B. bassiana and V. lecanii were 8.2 × 104 and 4.1 × 105 conidia/ml, respectively, on Diuraphis noxia ; 2.1 × 105 and 9.8 × 105 on Schizaphis graminum ; 3.3 × 105 and 7.0 × 105 on Metapolophium dirhodum ; 1.1 × 105 and 1.3 × 106 on Sitobion avenae ; 2.1 × 106 and 8.9 × 105 on Rhopalosiphum maidis ; and 3.3 × 106 and 6.9 × 106 on R. padi . Statistical analysis indicated that there were substantial differences in susceptibility to the two pathogens and in virulence of each fungus to different aphid species. The LT50 values at all concentrations varied between the pathogens and among the aphid hosts with B. bassiana tending to kill aphids more rapidly. The mortality data were probit transformed, and a third-order polynomial model was fit to the data to describe responses of each host to conidial concentration and time after treatment. The potential for use of B. bassiana for aphid control is discussed.
Virulence of entomopathogenic fungi against fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) under laboratory conditions

Abstract:Maize is an essential crop of China. The recent invasion of Spodoptera frugiperda , also known as fall armyworm (FAW), poses a danger to the country's ability to maintain a sustainable level of productivity from this core crop. Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) Metarhizium anisopliae MA, Penicillium citrinum CTD-28 and CTD-2, Cladosporium sp. BM-8, Aspergillus sp. SE-25 and SE-5, Metarhizium sp. CA-7, and Syncephalastrum racemosum SR-23 were tested to determine their effectiveness in causing mortality in second instars, eggs, and neonate larvae. Metarhizium anisopliae MA, P. citrinum CTD-28, and Cladosporium sp. BM-8 caused the highest levels of egg mortality, with 86.0, 75.3, and 70.0%, respectively, followed by Penicillium sp. CTD-2 (60.0%). Additionally, M. anisopliae MA caused the highest neonatal mortality of 57.1%, followed by P. citrinum CTD-28 (40.7%). In addition, M. anisopliae MA, P. citrinum CTD-28, and Penicillium sp. CTD-2 decreased the feeding efficacy of second instar larvae of FAW by 77.8, 75.0, and 68.1%, respectively, followed by Cladosporium sp. BM-8 (59.7%). It is possible that EPF will play an important role as microbial agents against FAW after further research is conducted on the effectiveness of these EPF in the field.

Abstract:The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a recent invasive pest species that has successfully established across sub-Saharan Africa where it continues to disrupt agriculture, particularly smallholder cereal production. Management of FAW in its native range in the Americas has led to the development of resistance to many commercial pesticides before its arrival in Africa. Pesticide use may therefore be ineffective for FAW control in Africa, so new and more sustainable approaches to pest management are required that can help reduce the impact of this exotic pest. Pesticidal plants provide an effective and established approach to pest management in African smallholder farming and recent research has shown that their use can be cost-beneficial and sustainable. In order to optimize the use of botanical extracts for FAW control, we initially screened ten commonly used plant species. In laboratory trials, contact toxicity and feeding bioassays showed differential effects. Some plant species had little to no effect when compared to untreated controls; thus, only the five most promising plant species were selected for more detailed study. In contact toxicity tests, the highest larval mortality was obtained from Nicotiana tabacum (66%) and Lippia javanica (66%). Similarly, in a feeding bioassay L. javanica (62%) and N. tabacum (60%) exhibited high larval mortality at the highest concentration evaluated (10% w/v). Feeding deterrence was evaluated using glass-fibre discs treated with plant extracts, which showed that Cymbopogon citratus (36%) and Azadirachta indica (20%) were the most potent feeding deterrents among the pesticidal plants evaluated. In a screenhouse experiment where living maize plants infested with fall armyworm larvae were treated with plant extracts, N. tabacum and L. javanica were the most potent species at reducing foliar damage compared to the untreated control whilst the synthetic pesticide chlorpyrifos was the most effective in reducing fall armyworm foliar damage. Further field trial evaluation is recommended, particularly involving smallholder maize fields to assess effectiveness across a range of contexts.

Abstract:This study examined the impact of Metarhizium anisopliae (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) conidia on the eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults of Spodoptera frugiperda. The results showed that eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults exhibited mortality rates that were dependent on the dose. An increased amount of conidia (1.5 × 109 conidia/mL) was found to be toxic to larvae, pupae, and adults after 9 days of treatment, resulting in a 100% mortality rate in eggs, 98% in larvae, 76% in pupae, and 85% in adults. A study using earthworms as bioindicators found that after 3 days of exposure, M. anisopliae conidia did not cause any harmful effects on the earthworms. In contrast, the chemical treatment (positive control) resulted in 100% mortality at a concentration of 40 ppm. Histopathological studies showed that earthworm gut tissues treated with fungal conidia did not show significant differences compared with those of the negative control. The gut tissues of earthworms treated with monocrotophos exhibited significant damage, and notable differences were observed in the chemical treatment. The treatments with 70 and 100 μg/mL solutions of Eudrilus eugeniae epidermal mucus showed no fungal growth. An analysis of the enzymes at a biochemical level revealed a decrease in the levels of acetylcholinesterase, α‐carboxylesterase, and β‐carboxylesterase in S. frugiperda larvae after exposure to fungal conidia. This study found that M. anisopliae is effective against S. frugiperda, highlighting the potential of this entomopathogenic fungus in controlling this agricultural insect pest.

Anomalous cosmic ray intensity variations in the inner and outer heliosphere during the solar cycle 22 recovery phase (1991–1999)

Abstract:[1] Differential intensity measurements of interplanetary H, He, and O ions made with the Low-Energy Charged Particle (LECP) instruments aboard the Voyager 1 (V1) and Voyager 2 (V2) deep space probes and the Low-Energy Ion Composition Analyzer (LICA) aboard the near-Earth Solar Anomalous Magnetospheric Particle Explorer (SAMPEX) satellite provide a comprehensive perspective on the transport of anomalous cosmic ray (ACR) ions during the 1991–1999 recovery phase of solar cycle 22 in both the outer and inner heliosphere. We report fifteen unique, independent ACR intensity time series, ranging over kinetic energies from 0.6 to 40 MeV/nucleon, and parameterize these observations (supplemented by one time-intensity profile from the literature) with a four-parameter fitting function to quantify the ACR behavior as solar minimum conditions developed and the V1 and V2 probes ranged from 36 to 76 AU from the Sun. We discuss a possible physical explanation for the striking differences between the outer heliospheric ACR recovery profiles at various energies. The intensities of nearly all species and energies recovered similarly from 1991 to mid-1994, increasing about an order of magnitude, but differed in a rigidity-dependent manner during the subsequent 5 years with the low-rigidity particle intensities growing exponentially, increasing up to an order of magnitude, while the high-rigidity particle intensities remained nearly constant. We find that these observations support the interpretation that before 1994 the recovery profiles of all the ACRs were governed by a temporal mechanism probably driven by the timescale of the variation of the transport properties of the interplanetary medium itself, rather than the “relaxation” timescale for diffusive equilibrium to develop. After 1994 the motion of the Voyager probes through regions with stable, positive radial intensity gradients explains the diverse recovery profiles of the various ACR species.

Abstract:The Field study was conducted in Barsiq village, Abu Homs city, Beheira Governorate during two successive seasons, summer seasons 2021 and 2022. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of two entomopathogenic `fungi, Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae three concentrations 1x106 , 1x109 and 1x1012 spores/ml were used. Also, threecommercial bioinsecticides [Biosiana 2.5% WP, Biometa 2.5% WP and Ememactin benzoat 5.7% WG]. The insecticide Methomyl 90% SP, for comparison under field conditions on the population of potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) which is considered the main insect pest that attacks potato Solanum tuberosum L. The obtained results showed the efficiency of tested control methods to protect potato foliage from PTM infestation, the highest value was recorded with Methomyl insecticide, followed by E. benzoat, combining E. benzoat with Biosiana, E. benzoat with Biometa, Biosiana, Biometa respectively. While the entomopathogenic fungi B. bassiana 1×1012, 1×109 , 1×106 and M. anisopliae 1×1012 , 1×109 , 1×106 , respectively. The relation between treatments and potato yield indicated that the highest increase of the potato yield was recorded with Methomyl insecticide, followed by, E. benzoat, combining E. benzoat with Biosiana, E. benzoat with Biometa, Biosiana and, Biometa respectively, Biosiana, Biometa, B. bassiana and M. anisopliae three concentrations (1×1012 , 1×109, 1×106 ) spores/ml.

Abstract:Increased attention is being focused on the biological control of agricultural pests using microorganisms, owing to their potential as a viable substitute for chemical control methods. Insect cadavers constitute a potential source of entomopathogenic microorganisms. We tested whether bacteria and fungi isolated from Spodoptera frugiperda (JE Smith) cadavers could affect its survival, development, egg-laying pattern, and hatchability, as well as induce mortality in Anthonomus grandis Boheman adults. We isolated the bacteria Enterobacter hormaechei and Serratia marcescens and the fungi Scopulariopsis sp. and Aspergillus nomiae from fall armyworm cadavers and the pest insects were subjected to an artificial diet enriched with bacteria cells or fungal spores to be tested, in the case of S. frugiperda , and only fungal spores in the case of A. grandis . Enterobacter hormaechei and A. nomiae were pathogenic to S. frugiperda , affecting the survival of adults and pupae. The fungus Scopulariopsis sp. does not affect the survival of S. frugiperda caterpillars and pupae; however, due to late action, moths and eggs may be affected. Aspergillus nomiae also increased mortality of A. grandis adults, as well as the development of S. frugiperda in the early stages of exposure to the diet, as indicated by the vertical spore transfer to offspring and low hatchability. Enterobacter hormaechei and A. nomiae are potential biocontrol agents for these pests, and warrant further investigation from a toxicological point of view and subsequently in field tests involving formulations that could improve agricultural sustainability practices.
