Potentials for Shade Management in Agroforestry Systems for Taro Cropping

Abstract:This paper discusses the potential benefits from shade management in agroforestry systems for taro cropping. Trial work to evaluate weed growth, taro production, and cultivar responses to shade levels are reviewed. It is concluded that weed growth can be reduced in tree-shaded plots without reducing corm production. Higher crop biomass is obtained when taro is grown under fifty percent shade compared to full sunlight. Furthermore, there is a shade/cultivar interaction which indicates the need to select cultivars appropriate to the shade levels found in farmers' fields. Tree shade in agroforestry plots provides a pleasant environment to carry out heavy tasks such as crop planting and weeding, possibly improving productivity from labor.

Abstract:In the concrete industry, various R&D efforts have been devoted to self-healing technology, which can maintain the long-term performance of concrete structures, which is important in terms of sustainable development. Cracks in cement composites occur and propagate because of various internal and external factors, reducing the composite's stability. Interest in "self-healing" materials that can repair cracks has led researchers to embed self-healing capsules in cement composites. Overcoming the limitations of polymer capsules produced by chemical manufacturing methods, three-dimensional (3D) printing can produce capsules quickly and accurately and offers advantages such as high material strength, low cost, and the ability to fabricate capsules with complex geometries. We performed structural analysis simulations, experimentally evaluated the mechanical properties and solubility of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) capsules, and examined the effect of the capsule wall thickness and printing direction on cement composites embedded with these capsules. Thicker capsules withstood larger bursting loads, and the capsule rupture characteristics varied with the printing angle. Thus, the capsule design parameters must be optimized for different environments. Although the embedded capsules slightly reduced the compressive strength of the cement composites, the benefit of the encapsulated self-healing agent is expected to overcome this disadvantage.

Abstract:Concretes with micro-encapsulated healing agents are very appealing due to the advantages of self-healing and the potential for controllable quantifiable healing on a large scale with little initial damage. Based on experimental observation and Taylor's model, a two-dimensional micromechanical damage-healing model of microcapsule-enabled self-healing cementitious materials under tensile loading has been proposed. The healing effect on microcrack-induced damage can now be predicted quantitatively by its microscopic healing mechanism. The kinetic equations of damage-healing evolution and the formulations of compliance after healing are developed. Subsequently, simple and efficient numerical simulations are presented and different system parameters of microcapsule-enabled self-healing concretes, such as the radius and volume fraction of microcapsules, fracture toughness of healing agents and initial damage degree, are investigated. In particular, the proposed micromechanical damage-healing model demonstrates the potential capability to explain and simulate the physical behavior of microcapsule-enabled self-healing materials on the mesoscale.

Abstract:Purpose As an efficient self-healing intelligent material, the encapsulation-based self-healing resin mineral composite (SHC) has a broad application prospect. Design/methodology/approach Aiming at the cracking performance of SHC, the dynamic load condition is employed to replace the traditional static load condition, the initial damage of the material is considered and the triggered cracking process and influencing factors of SHC are analyzed based on the extended finite element method (XFEM). In addition, the mechanism of matrix cracking and microcapsule triggered cracking process is explained from the microscopic point of view, and the cracking performance conditions of SHC are studied. On this basis, the response surface regression analysis method is used to obtain a second-order polynomial model of the microcapsule crack initiation stress, the interface bonding strength and the matching relationship between elastic modulus. Therefore, the model could be used to predict the cracking performance parameters of the microcapsule. Findings The interfacial bonding strength has an essential effect on the triggered cracking of the microcapsule. In order to ensure that the microcapsule can be triggered cracking normally, the design strength should meet the following relationship, that is crack initiation stress of microcapsule wall < crack initiation stress of matrix < interface bonding strength. Moreover, the matching relationship between elastic modulus has a significant influence on the triggered cracking of the microcapsule. Originality/value The results provide a theoretical basis for further oriented designing of the cracking performance of microcapsules.

Abstract:Since delamination always occurs in the laminate structures of fiber reinforced polymer composites in engineering applications, developing self-healing composites has become more and more important nowadays, especially for large-scale composite equipment, which is difficult to maintain when in service. In this paper, the micromechanical finite element (FE) models are developed for the polymer matrix composites containing self-healing microcapsules. Based on mesoscale FE simulation and cross reference to related experimental results, we firstly reveal the rupture mechanism of microcapsules, in which the interaction between the microcapsules and microcracks propagated in the resin matrix is investigated by using the extended finite element method in ABAQUS. The mesoscale characteristics of the self-healing agent, dicyclopentadiene, during the healing process, are revealed with the help of the fluid-solid coupling FE module. Especially, the dynamic filling mechanism of the self-healing agent within the microcrack planes is physically interpreted by the use of the capillary effect and contact angle principle. Finally, the healing efficiencies of self-healing composites with different microcapsule sizes and volume fractions are quantitatively evaluated via the virtual mechanical tests of fracture toughness. To be emphasized is that most of the simulation results obtained in this work have exhibited good agreements with the corresponding experimental data, showing a robust reliability of our FE models.

Abstract:Recently, a self-healing technique capable of repairing cracks in structures has emerged. Among various self-healing technologies, self-healing capsules can be largely classified into two types, depending on the phase of the core material: solid capsules, in which the core material is a powder; and microcapsules, in which the core material is a liquid. Solid capsules and microcapsules have different mechanisms, and their capsule sizes are also distinctly different. This suggests that each has advantages and disadvantages. Most of the studies known to date have utilized single capsules. However, if one uses a mixture of the two types of capsules, it is possible to highlight the strengths of each capsule and compensate for the weaknesses. Therefore, in this study, the first research on complex capsules that mixed solid capsules and microcapsules was attempted. As a result of the experiment, the complex capsule slightly reduced the fluidity of the mortar, but the effect was not significant. Moreover, the complex capsule tended to reduce the compressive strength of the mortar. In particular, it was found that the effect of solid capsules on the reduction in compressive strength among complex capsules was greater than that of microcapsules. Conversely, the healing performance increased when the ratio of solid capsules in the complex capsules was large.

Abstract:Polymer-matrix composite structures with both self-monitoring and self-healing properties are proposed using a dual-material additive manufacturing technique. A double-nozzle three-dimensional (3D) printer system was adopted to fabricate these composite structures. A thermoplastic matrix with healing-agent containers was printed using one of the nozzles. The continuous carbon fibers, serving as both a sensory element and reinforcement, were embedded into the thermoplastic matrix using the other nozzle. The feasibility and effectiveness of the structures were verified through compression and three-point bending tests. Real-time self-monitoring of structural damage was performed using electrical resistance measurements. The results demonstrated that addition of 2120 Epoxy Cure agent and 2000 Epoxy Resin agent into the polymer matrix could help to repair the structural damage, with average healing efficiencies of 27.84% for non-reinforced specimens and 30.15% for fiber-reinforced specimens. In addition, digital image correlation (DIC) was utilized to analyze the reinforcing mechanism and failure behavior of the 3D printed thermoplastic composite structures reinforced with continuous carbon fibers. Integration of continuous carbon fibers and healing agents within the polymer matrix can create smart structures that can not only monitor their own structural health state, but also repair structural damage.
Micromechanical Properties of a New Polymeric Microcapsule for Self-Healing Cementitious Materials

Abstract:Self-healing cementitious materials containing a microencapsulated healing agent are appealing due to their great application potential in improving the serviceability and durability of concrete structures. In this study, poly(phenol-formaldehyde) (PF) microcapsules that aim to provide a self-healing function for cementitious materials were prepared by an in situ polymerization reaction. Size gradation of the synthesized microcapsules was achieved through a series of sieving processes. The shell thickness and the diameter of single microcapsules was accurately measured under environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). The relationship between the physical properties of the synthesized microcapsules and their micromechanical properties were investigated using nanoindentation. The results of the mechanical tests show that, with the increase of the mean size of microcapsules and the decrease of shell thickness, the mechanical force required to trigger the self-healing function of microcapsules increased correspondingly from 68.5 ± 41.6 mN to 198.5 ± 31.6 mN, featuring a multi-sensitive trigger function. Finally, the rupture behavior and crack surface of cement paste with embedded microcapsules were observed and analyzed using X-ray computed tomography (XCT). The synthesized PF microcapsules may find potential application in self-healing cementitious materials.

Accelerated stress testing and diagnostic analysis of degradation in CdTe solar cells

Abstract:Solar cell module reliability is inextricably linked to cell-level reliability. This is particularly so with thin-film technologies. In CdTe, reliability issues historically associate with back contact stability and the use of Cu as an extrinsic dopant. Using a simple approach by which identical cells are heated under open-circuit bias and 1-sun illumination, degradation activation energies of 0.63 and 2.94 eV in laboratory-scale CdS/CdTe devices were identified in the accelerated stress temperature range of 60 to 120 °C. At lower stress temperatures, cell performance changes were linearly correlated with changes in both fill factor (FF) and short-circuit current (Jsc). At higher stress temperatures, changes in efficiency were correlated with changes in FF and open-circuit voltage (Voc). The measured activation energy of 0.63 is associated with Cu-diffusion. During the early stage of stress testing, which may provide additional back contact annealing, improvements in FF were due to Cu-diffusion. Decreased performance observed at longer stress times (decreased FF and Voc), according to a two-diode Pspice model, were due to both increased space-charge recombination (near the junction) and decreased recombination in the bulk. Kirkendall void formation (S-outdiffusion) at the CdS/CdTe interface is given as responsible for the 2.9 eV degradation mechanism.

Abstract:The cementitious composites with microencapsulated healing agents have become a class of hotspots in the field of construction materials, and they have very broad application prospects and research values. The in-depth study on multi-scale mechanical behaviors of microencapsulated self-healing cementitious composites is critical to quantitatively account for the mechanical response during the damage-healing process. This paper proposes a three-dimensional evolutionary micromechanical model to quantitatively explain the self-healing effects of microencapsulated healing agents on the damage induced by microcracks. By virtue of the proposed 3 D micromechanical model, the evolutionary domains of microcrack growth (DMG) and corresponding compliances of the initial, extended and repaired phases are obtained. Moreover, the elaborate studies are conducted to inspect the effects of various system parameters involving the healing efficiency, fracture toughness and preloading-induced damage degrees on the compliances and stress-strain relations. The results indicate that relatively significant healing efficiency, preloading-induced damage degree and the fracture toughness of polymerized healing agent with the matrix will lead to a higher compressive strength and stiffness. However, the specimen will break owing to the nucleated microcracks rather than the repaired kinked microcracks. Further, excessive higher values of healing efficiency, preloading-induced damage degree and the fracture toughness of polymerized healing agent with the matrix will not affect the compressive strength of the cementitious composites. Therefore, a stronger matrix is required. To achieve the desired healing effects, the specific parameters of both the matrix and microcapsules should be selected prudently.

Abstract:Composites are used in a variety of applications due to their excellent properties. However, structural polymers are sensitive and susceptible to thermal and mechanical damage in form of micro-cracks, which are onset to grow deep within the structure where detection and repair are practically impossible. To overcome these problems, broad range of self-healing structures have emerged. This technology has led to an increase in the material's lifetime and safety while reducing the repair and replacement costs. Capsule-based healing systems are a well-known technology that has many uses in smart protective coatings, dental composites, concrete components, and generally for polymer and fiber-reinforced composites. This article summarizes the research work on the capsule-based self-healing system over the last two decades. In this regard, after a brief introduction, various types of microencapsulation-based methods used in healing systems are classified. After explaining the manufacturing process of capsules, parameters affecting the microencapsulation quality particularly, agitation rate, core to shell weight ratio, monomer viscosity, solvent property, reaction time, temperature, pH, and U/F ratio are explained in detail. Finally, the most common healing efficiency evaluation methods are described. Abstract:Self-healing concrete designs can protect against deterioration and improve durability. However, there is no unified conclusion regarding the effective preparation and mechanical properties of self-healing concrete. In this paper, microcapsules are used in cement-based materials, the reasonable dosage of microcapsules is determined, and the self-healing performance of the microcapsule self-healing system under different curing agents is explored. The microcapsules and curing agent are shown to enhance the flexural and compressive strength of mortar specimens at relatively low contents. The optimal microcapsule content in terms of compressive strength is 1–3%. When the content of the microcapsule reaches 7%, the strength of the specimen decreases by approximately 30%. Sodium fluorosilicate is better-suited to the microcapsule self-healing cement-based system than the other two fluorosilicates, potassium fluorosilicate and magnesium, which have similarly poor healing performance as curing agents. Healing time also appears to significantly influence the microcapsule self-healing system; mortar specimens that healed for 28 days are significantly higher than those that healed for 7 days. This work may provide a valuable reference for the design and preparation of self-healing cementitious composite structures.

Abstract:Micro-capsule has been considered the most promising self-healing material, while the complex and high temperature polymerization process, and environmental unfriendly raw materials limits its wide application. Herein, the green micro-capsule composed of epoxy resin and calcium alginate were prepared at room temperature via needle drop method,O/W/O emulsion method and spraying method. The effects of preparation methods on the water absorption, encapsulation rate of micro-capsules were revealed, and the differences in the self-healing efficiency of cement containing these green micro-capsules were also studied. Among all samples, the micro-capsules prepared by O/W/O emulsion method (MCE-2) owned the highest water absorption 54.71 % and the highest epoxy resin content 48.1 %. Compared with the blank samples, adding micro-capsules improved the liquidity of cement slurry and facilitated the hydration process, related to the release of extra water. While, the micro-capsules caused additional defects in the cement matrix and weakened the compressive strength of cement. In the self-healing measurement, the composites with MCE-2 showed the biggest mass transfer pressure and least permeability before and after repair. The higher water absorption of MCE-2 significantly increased greater mass transfer resistance to block the erosion of external fluids before repair, and the higher epoxy resin content could ensure stronger sealing effect after repair, achieving the best self-healing performance.

Abstract:Recently, the development of 3D mini-vascular networks has demonstrated their ability to facilitate self-healing in concrete structures. These 3D printed polylactide (PLA) hollow ligament tetrahedral shaped units (TETs) can heal multiple occurrences of damage by releasing a single-component healing agent stored within. To improve the healing efficacy of the concrete-TET system whilst overcoming the potentially short shelf life of single-component healing agents, the TETs design was modified. TETs with co-axial hollow ligaments (d-TETs) suitable for storing bi-component healing agents were manufactured. Different healing agents, including epoxy resin (i.e. cycloaliphatic epoxy resin plus hardener) and sodium silicate in isolation or in combination with either nanosilica or nanolime solution were explored. The d-TETs were effective in storing these bi-component healing agents without them undergoing premature mixing and curing. Moreover, the d-TETs successfully ruptured and released healing agents at a crack width of 0.35mm. After one damage-healing cycle, significant strength and stiffness recovery was achieved: d-TETs hosting sodium silicate and nano-lime yielded the best strength recovery (25%), whilst most other sodium silicate-based healing agent combinations demonstrated stiffness recoveries of approximately 40%. This demonstrates the efficiency of the d-TETs concept as a system, which allows strength and stiffness recovery despite the limited volume of healing agent.

Abstract:With the widespread application of cement-based materials, the self-healing problem of microcracks has become increasingly prominent. Self-healing microcapsule technology has received widespread attention due to its excellent healing properties. However, traditional single-walled microcapsules have a series of defects in the actual application process. To better solve this problem, this study used the method of secondary wall construction to prepare dopamine hydrochloride functionalized E-51@MPF/SiO2 double-walled self-healing microcapsules. By combining in situ polymerization and the sol–gel method, based on single-walled MPF, polydopamine-loaded nano-SiO2 particles are introduced to form a double-layer coating structure. Subsequently, a series of microcharacterization experiments were carried out to analyze in detail the morphology, functional groups, particle size, and thermal stability of the functionalized double-walled microcapsules. A uniaxial compression experiment was performed to verify the healing properties of the microcapsules. The results show that dopamine hydrochloride-functionalized double-walled self-healing microcapsules have good compactness, temperature resistance, and healing properties and have excellent particle size. To further analyze the microscopic synthesis mechanism, molecular dynamics simulation was used to elaborate on the two angles of mean square displacement and density distribution. This research innovated self-healing microcapsule technology and improved the safety of cement-based materials in the application process.

Abstract:Microcapsule-based self-healing concrete can effectively repair micro-cracks in concrete and improve the strength and durability of concrete structures. In this paper, in order to study the effect of epoxy resin on the cement matrix at a microscopic level, molecular dynamics were used to simulate the mechanical and interfacial properties of microcapsule-based self-healing concrete in which uniaxial tension was carried out along the z-axis. The radial distribution function, interface binding energy, and hydrogen bonding of the composite were investigated. The results show that the epoxy resin/C-S-H composite has the maximum stress strength when TEPA is used as the curing agent. Furthermore, the interface binding energy between epoxy resin and cement matrix increases with increasing strain before the stress reaches its peak value. Abstract:Microcapsule-based self-healing concrete can autonomously release repairing agents to bond and seal cracks when the material is damaged. It is seen as a promising construction material from the perspective of a sustainable society. In addition, it is important to study mechanical behaviour under complex stress conditions to promote the application of self-healing concrete in engineering structures. This study investigated the constitutive relations, strength and deformation, and failure criterion of the epoxy/urea-formaldehyde microcapsule-based self-healing concrete through uniaxial compression, conventional triaxial compression and true triaxial compression tests, in which the influence of different microcapsule dosages, confinement pressures and the principal stress ratios on the mechanical behaviours was considered. The results showed that the ultimate strength of the specimen decreased with increasing microcapsule dosage under all loading conditions. The lateral pressure significantly promoted the ultimate strength and deformation capacity of the specimen, and this increase mainly depended on the maximum principal stress ( σ1 ) rather than the intermediate principal stress ( σ2 ). By visual checking the failure modes of the specimens, more cracks were observed under the conventional triaxial compression than those under the true triaxial compression. This multi-crack failure mode allowed more core material of microcapsules to enter the microcracks, which accordingly increased the strength of the microcapsule-based concrete.

Abstract:Concrete cracking has a negative impact on the durability of the structure. Pre-implanting microcapsules containing healing agents into the concrete are expected to induce the cracks to self-heal. However, the self-healing effect can potentially be influenced by several environmental conditions, thus limiting its applications. To address these challenges, we developed a new type of water-absorbing microcapsules, using calcium alginate hydrogel as the wall material and an adhesive epoxy polymer as the core material, to improve the self-healing adaptability in complex and changing environments. We explored the healing properties and mechanism of cementitious materials containing microcapsules under various environmental conditions. The experimental results showed that the water-absorbent microcapsules exhibit multiple self-healing effects under different external conditions: (1) in an anhydrous environment, fissures prompted the activation of microcapsules, and the epoxy polymer flowed out to seal the cracks. (2) When exposed to water, the microcapsules inflated to form a seal around the fissures. (3) The microcapsules facilitated the autogenous healing of cracks in the cementitious material when wet and dry conditions were alternated. The three self-healing mechanisms worked synergistically and contributed to the effective restoration of the impermeability and strength of concrete under different environments. Particularly, the recovery of compressive strength and impermeability exceeded 100% when the microcapsule content was 4% and the pre-pressure was 40% of fmax.

Abstract:In this paper, a constitutive model and damage of self-healing three-dimensional (3D) braided composites with microcapsules are investigated. First, a constitutive model that takes into account the impact of microcapsules is established to study the stress distribution in self-healing composite materials. Second, a 3D multiscale finite element (FE) model of the 3D braided self-healing composites with microcapsules is developed to assess the self-healing impact of the microcapsules on fiber-matrix debonding damage. Finally, the effects of microcapsule position and the presence of several microcapsules on stress distribution and healing effectiveness are further examined. The findings demonstrate that the proposed constitutive model is adaptive to the design and improvement of the current self-healing smart composites.
