Abstract:Background Young adults are exposed to a variety of risk-related behaviours such as alcohol, smoking, and changes in dietary habits, which may result in unknown outcomes in their oral health. There is limited evidence on whether different risk behaviours are associated with oral health behaviours in the university student population. This study gathers data on the behaviours of students in their first year of university, which will inform the future development of oral health behaviour change interventions for this population. Method This longitudinal quantitative survey involved 205 first-year university students, aged 18-24. They completed questionnaires at baseline and a 6-month follow-up interval providing information regarding self-reported oral health status, hygiene routines, risk behaviours (e.g., diet, smoking, alcohol) and attitudes towards digital health. Results The findings show associations between oral health behaviours with risk behaviours including links with oral care routines, bleeding gums, brushing frequency, with exercise, vaping, and unhealthy food and drink intake. Significant changes over the two-time points were also observed, such as the worsening of the self-reported condition of the teeth (p<0.001), reduction in the self-reported condition of the gums (p=0.004), reduced brushing frequency (p=0.003), less regular dental visits (p=0.013), more students intending to visit their previous dentist rather than finding a new dentist at university (p=0.026), and increased consumption of unhealthy non-alcoholic drinks (p=0.003). Positive changes over time include reduced alcohol consumption frequency and units (p=0.030 and p=0.001), fewer instances of binge drinking (p=0.014), and less frequent consumption of unhealthy foods (p=0.034). Conclusion The findings highlight the complex relationship between oral heal and risk behaviours in this demographic. Poorer oral health behaviours are linked to engagement in risk behaviours. Therefore, oral health behaviours should be targeted alongside other risk behaviours. Tailored interventions should be developed to improve oral health and behaviour among university students.

Abstract:Oral health is crucial for health-related quality of life. However, the research on the factors affecting oral health status is not comprehensive enough. This investigation aimed to evaluate the multifaceted determinants of college students' oral health status and explore the impact of social support, oral health literacy, attitudes, behaviors, and self-efficacy on OHRQoL. By surveying 822 students from a university. Baseline data included sociodemographics (gender, age), social support (MSPSS scale), oral health self-efficacy (SESS scale), oral health knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP questionnaire), and OHRQoL (OHIP-14 scale). Based on social cognitive theory, partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) were used to examine the relationship between the study variables. PLS-SEM results showed that knowledge, attitude, and practice predicted OHRQoL through self-efficacy. FsQCA results showed that the combination of different variables was sufficient to explain OHRQoL. The conclusion was that self-efficacy plays an important role and the combination of high-level knowledge, positive attitudes, and strong self-efficacy was important in improving OHRQoL. The results of this study provided a reference for the oral health strategy planning of college students in China.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Oral health is often viewed as a significant component for an indication of good general health or for good well-being together with a decent quality of life. Health literacy is considered a crucial factor in improvising a good life or excellent health. Oral health literacy (OHL) is the ability necessary for people to identify the factors that lead to poor oral health, learn and put into practice the essentials of effective oral self-care behaviors, and communicate with oral healthcare professionals in order to schedule appointments, put their names on waiting lists for dental care, and locate the dentist's office.AIM AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate students' oral health, their OHL, to determine the relationship between their oral health status and OHL, and finally to suggest preventive measures for the benefit of public health.MATERIALS AND METHOD: At Teerthanker Mahaveer University, a cross-sectional study involving 1500 participants, ages 18 to 25, was conducted on students studying nursing, physiotherapy, paramedicine, engineering, and law. Their informed consent was obtained. The Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Dentistry (REALD-99) was used to gauge OHL levels, and the WHO's 1997 Oral Health Survey was used for their clinical evaluation.RESULTS: The mean REALD score was significantly higher in nursing students (88.32±6.46), followed by physiotherapy college (82.46±9.11), paramedical college (70.54±10.95), law college (46.52±7.74), and least in engineering college (38.80±10.65). The difference in the REALD score based on college was statistically significant. Along with this, the REALD score showed a correlation with gender and location too. Except for fluorosis, all the clinical parameters of dental caries, gingival bleeding, and pockets, loss of attachment, dental fluorosis, and dental enamel were associated with OHL.CONCLUSION: The results of the current study showed a relationship between educational attainment, clinical parameters examined, and OHL, leading to the conclusion that higher OHL is related to better oral health. So, we can conclude that maintaining good oral health requires OHL.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction The positive attitude and behaviour of dental students can be improved during their undergraduate studies and is considered an essential factor in promoting the oral self-care habits of their patients and society in general. Aim This study was conducted to evaluate the oral health knowledge, attitudes and behaviours among undergraduate dental students at a private university, based on the year of undergraduate studies. Material and methods A self-administered questionnaire based on the Hiroshima University-Dental Behavioural Inventory was distributed among 783 undergraduate dental students from 1st to 5th year. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 20. The Mann–Whitney U test and one-way ANOVA tests (Kruskal–Wallis test) were used. Results The scores of oral health knowledge, attitude and behaviour between preclinical and clinical dental students were found to have statistically significant differences ( P < 0.001). The variation of knowledge, attitude and behaviour scores from 1st to 5th year undergraduate studies was shown to be statistically significant with the year of study ( P < 0.001). The study showed significant improvement in the knowledge, attitude and behaviour of the final year dental students as compared with the 1st year dental students. Conclusion Preclinical students need properly designed oral health educational programs to increase their attitude and behaviour toward oral health.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the oral health status of freshmen of university students and to guide their oral hygiene behaviors. METHODS:6,575 freshmen of Peking University students were investigated in this study according to the criterion issued by World Health Organization (WHO) on the basic methods of oral health investigation and China oral health epidemiology survey protocol. The inspection item included caries, gingivitis, malocclusions and impacted teeth. RESULTS:In 6,575 freshmen of university students, the prevalence rate of caries, gingivitis, malocclusions and impacted teeth were 35.47%, 60.87%, 19.70% and 24.62%, respectively. There were statistical significance between the prevalence rate of caries, gingivitis, malocclusions and impacted teeth of male and female (chi2=131.94, P<0.001: chi2=216.85, P<0.001; chi2=14.54, P<0.01; chi2=23.56, P<0.001). There were statistical significance between the prevalence rate of caries, gingivitis and impacted teeth of postgraduate and undergraduate (chi2=4.62, P<0.05: chi2=129.56, P<0.001; chi2=178.05, P<0.001), while there was no statistical significance between the prevalence rate of malocclusions of postgraduate and undergraduate (chi2=0.61, P>0.05). CONCLUSION:The oral health status of freshmen of university students are not ideal. It is necessary to strengthen the propaganda education of prevention and protect to freshmen of university students.

Abstract:Much research on children’s oral health has focused on proximal determinants at the expense of distal (upstream) factors. Yet, such upstream factors—the so-called structural determinants of health—play a crucial role. Children’s lives, and in turn their health, are shaped by politics, economic forces, and social and public policies. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between children’s clinical (number of decayed, missing, and filled teeth) and self-reported oral health (oral health–related quality of life) and 4 key structural determinants (governance, macroeconomic policy, public policy, and social policy) as outlined in the World Health Organization’s Commission for Social Determinants of Health framework. Secondary data analyses were carried out using subnational epidemiological samples of 8- to 15-y-olds in 11 countries ( N = 6,648): Australia (372), New Zealand (three samples; 352, 202, 429), Brunei (423), Cambodia (423), Hong Kong (542), Malaysia (439), Thailand (261, 506), United Kingdom (88, 374), Germany (1498), Mexico (335), and Brazil (404). The results indicated that the type of political regime, amount of governance (e.g., rule of law, accountability), gross domestic product per capita, employment ratio, income inequality, type of welfare regime, human development index, government expenditure on health, and out-of-pocket (private) health expenditure by citizens were all associated with children’s oral health. The structural determinants accounted for between 5% and 21% of the variance in children’s oral health quality-of-life scores. These findings bring attention to the upstream or structural determinants as an understudied area but one that could reap huge rewards for public health dentistry research and the oral health inequalities policy agenda.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the oral health status of freshmen of university students and to guide their oral hygiene behaviors. Methods A total of 723 freshmen in China Medical University were investigated in this study according to the criterion issued by World Health Organization(WHO)and the basic methods of the Third National Oral Health Epidemiological Survey . SPSS 13.0 software was used to analyze the data. Results (1) The caries prevalence among the students investigated was 56.98%. The DMFT was 2.19. The proportion of FT in DMFT was 29.40%. The female students showed significant higher caries prevalence than the male students,and so did the students who came from city compared with those from countryside.(2) The detection rates of dental calculus, gum bleeding and periodontal pocket were 78.28%, 64.32% and 6.22% respectively. The worst situation was among male students and students from countryside. Conclusion The oral health status among freshmen in this medical university are not good.It is necessary to strengthen the propaganda education of oral disease prevention and oral health among the university students in order to improve their oral health status levels.

Abstract:Oral health status among dental students has been widely studied, and while the repercussions of certain factors, such as personality type, adherence to healthy lifestyle habits and certain eating patterns, have been considered in the past, this study aims to study the combination of such factors and to carry out, in addition, clinical examinations that could provide deeper knowledge of real oral health status. A sample of 195 dental students was gathered and basic sociodemographic data (gender, age, nationality, hygiene habits, body mass index (BMI)) were collected, and type A personality scale (ERCTA), emotional eating (EE) and healthy lifestyle scale (EVS) values were registered. Descriptive analysis, Pearson correlations, a hierarchical linear regression model and moderation analysis were performed. Results showed that higher EE values were associated with a higher BMI, an increase in the decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index, a higher number of carious and filled teeth, a higher ERCTA and a lower adherence to the EVS. Likewise, a higher DMFT was associated with a higher BMI, higher bleeding on probing index (BOP) values, higher ERCTA values and lower adherence to EVS. Dental floss disuse, BMI, EE and EVS predicted 25.3% of DMFT. In addition, a type A personality has a moderating effect only in those with medium and high EE levels.

Abstract:Background: The number of international students enrolled in universities in Japan is increasing. To provide better oral care services for international students, we have to understand their oral environment and dental health behaviors. However, few studies have investigated the oral health status of international university students. The object of the present study was to clarify the current oral status of international university students. Methods: The subjects were students who visited the dental department at the University of Tokyo's Health Services Center between April 2012 and March 2013. Our medical records were reviewed with regard to the following items: attributes (nationality, gender, and age); chief complaint (reason for visit); history of dental treatment; mean number of decayed (D), missing (M) or filled (F) teeth as a single (DMFT) index; degree of calculus deposition; gingival condition; and oral hygiene status. Results: The records of 554 university students (138 international and 416 non-international students) were analyzed; 88.4% of the 138 international students were from Asian countries (n = 122), of which 47.1% were from China and 10.9% from Korea, followed by North America (5.8%), Europe (4.3%), and Africa (1.5%). Although no significant differences were found regarding the history of dental treatment between international and non-international students (49.3% and 48.8%, respectively), international students had a significantly higher dental caries morbidity rate (60.1%) than non-international students (49.0%). The international students showed a significantly higher DMFT value compared with the non-international students: 5.0 and 4.0 per individual, respectively. Severe calculus deposition was observed in international students compared with non-international students (51.9% and 31.7%, respectively). Conclusions: The international university students had poorer oral health status than the non-international students, even though the result might include many uncertainties and possible biases.

Abstract:Objective To analyze dental medical behavior of college students,and find out what were truly influencing factors of college students' dental medical behavior.Methods Make positive analysis of the epidemiological data of influencing factors of college students' dental medical behavior using Chi-square and Hierarchical test.Results According to the results of this study,there were three types of influencing factors:recognition of the dental diseases,dental health conditions,habits of the students,and dental service source.Conclusions To help college students to establish right dental medical behavior,there are three approaches.First,promote college students' recognition and attitude towards dental disseases;second,carry out dental health guidance specifically;and third, enforce and facilitate dental service and dental health propaganda.

Self-Efficacy for Oral Health Behavior among High School Female Students

Abstract:Background: Infections and tooth loss are common side effects of mouth and dental illnesses, as can paralyzing pains and trouble eating and speaking. Another important consideration is that persistent oral infections have been linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and stroke, all of which, along with other noncommunicable and chronic diseases, could be avoided by improving oral health literacy. Objectives(s): The aim of this study is to assess the self-efficacy for oral health behavior among high school female students. Methodology: This study guided by a descriptive correlational strategy. The predictive correlational design is used to predict the value of one variable based on the value of another (s) by determining the intensity and course of relationships between or among variables. This study conducted from September 20, 2021, to May 31, 2022. A non-probability convenience sample of (380) female high school students that are registered in the directorate of education. When subjects appear to be at the right place at the right time, they are used in convenience sampling research. Before the required sample size is met, researchers simply add relevant people to the study. A margin of error of 5%, a confidence level of 95%, a population size of 18.000, and a response distribution of 50% were used to establish the sample size. As a result, 377 people should be included in the sample. The total number of participants is 380. Results: There are statistically significant differences in Self-Efficacy for brushing behavior and Self-Efficacy for oral health behavior among living arrangements groups (p-value = 0.000, 0.010) respectively. Conclusion: The better the oral health value, the greater the Self-Efficacy for brushing behavior. The better the oral health value, the greater the Self-Efficacy for daily life habits. Recommendations: There is a need for the community health nurses to establish health promotion activities that target high school students; particularly the fourth graders with the goal of raising and their oral health awareness. Abstract:The purpose of this study was to examine the association between oral health literacy, preventive orientation and behaviors, and chronic medical conditions—specifically, hypertension and diabetes. A cross-sectional study was conducted with dental school patients attending the dental clinics in Los Angeles, California, and Baltimore, Maryland. Their health literacy levels were measured using the short Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults (Short-TOFHLA) and the Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Medicine and Dentistry (REALM-D). The medical history and existing medical conditions—specifically, hypertension and diabetes status—were extracted from patient health history and electronic records. Ten items were asked about preventive behaviors (e.g., brushing teeth in evening, smoking, exercise, drinking soda) and 3 preventive health services (dental checkup, flu shot, medical checkup). Six locus of control items were asked (e.g., good health is a matter of good fortune, what happens to my health is God’s will). Out of 793 subjects, 221 had a documented history of hypertension, 88 with diabetes. There was an association between Short-TOFHLA scores and both diabetes and hypertension, but after controlling for sociodemographic and preventive variables, the association was no longer significant. In multivariate analysis, women, people with at least some college, Asians or non-Hispanic Whites, younger people, those who spoke English as a child, those who sought health information from the Internet or health care professionals, and those who smoked reported lower utilization of preventive health services, and those who had less locus of control reported higher Short-TOFHLA scores. There were no significant differences in mean REALM-D scores between patients who had hypertension or diabetes versus not having the condition. Multivariate models showed that people with higher REALM-D scores had at least some college, were other race/ethnicity or non-Hispanic White, spoke English as a child, and sought health information via the Internet. Knowledge Transfer Statement: The results of this study show that dental school patients exhibit a range of health literacy abilities and preventive behaviors, and health literacy measures positively correlated with some preventive behaviors but not others. Dental schools receive a significant number of patients with chronic diseases, and students should be educated to use effective patient communication skills to reinforce positive health behaviors among these patients.

Abstract:Objective: To assess the level of exposure to information about oral health from local sources, risk awareness, oral health beliefs and behaviours among male and female students attending higher learning institutions in Dar es Salaam. Design: A cross sectional survey. Setting: Government recognised higher education institutions in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in 1999. Subjects: The study population comprised of 1123 university students in Dar es Salaam. Main outcome measures: Level of risk awareness, exposure to oral health information, oral health beliefs and behaviour among students. Results: Despite apparent misconceptions, the level of risk awareness was generally high and did not differ between male and female students. Univariate analysis of variance revealed that female students were exposed to more oral health information, had stronger oral beliefs and performed preventive behaviours more frequently than did their male counterparts. In multiple linear regression analysis, beliefs about the importance of preventive behaviours were significantly related to the frequency with which such habits occurred (beta = 0.19, p < 0.001) across gender and students status. This relationship was significantly stronger among females (beta = 0.33, p < 0.001) than among males (beta = 0.11 p < 0.05). Conclusion: The results indicate that strengthening beliefs in the presence of accurate knowledge might successfully promote students' oral health enhancing behaviour.

Two different methods of US screening were undertaken in consecutive years: (a) Clinically abnormal hips were assessed for dynamic stability without formal assessment of dysplasia; and (b) Morphologic and dynamic assessment was undertaken in clinically abnormal and "at risk" hips. US has been reported as an accurate method for initial diagnosis of instability of the hip joint. The incidence of late congenital dislocation of the hip (CDH) was not reduced by extending the US programme to include "at risk groups" and morphologic assessment of the hips. Morphologic assessment of the hip alone cannot be recommended as a secondary screening programme for the diagnosis of hip dislocation. However, it may be of value in evaluation of persistent dysplasia and its relationship with dislocation. Targeted screening programmes may reduce the rate of late CDH requiring operative procedures; further trials of US are necessary.
