Abstract:The experiment aimed to investigate the effects of dietary β-mannanase supplementation on growth performance, apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of nutrients, intestinal integrity, and the immunological and oxidative stress parameters in weaning pigs. A total of 64 newly weaning pigs (initial body weight: 6.96 ± 0.70 kg) were allotted to two dietary treatments in eight replicates per treatment with four pigs per pen based on body weight and sex. Dietary treatments were 1.) CON (control: corn-soybean meal based basal diet) and 2.) β-mannanase (basal diet +0.06% β-mannanase). The β-mannanase supplementation did not affect growth performance, concentrations of acute phase protein, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase. However, the pigs fed the β-mannanase-supplemented diet had greater ATTD of ether extract, jejunum villus height, and villus height-to-crypt depth ratio, and lower crypt depth compared with those fed the CON diet (p < 0.05). The pigs fed the β-mannanase-supplemented diet tended to have the lower count of E. coli in cecum than those fed the CON diet (p = 0.08). In conclusion, dietary β-mannanase supplementation did not affect growth performance, immune response and oxidative stress of weaning pigs, whereas it increased fat digestibility and had positive effects on intestinal integrity and cecum microflora by reducing the count of E.coli.

Effects of Supplemental Beta-mannanase on Digestible Energy and Metabolizable Energy Contents of Copra Expellers and Palm Kernel Expellers Fed to Pigs

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of β-mannanase supplementation on digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) contents of copra expellers (CE) and palm kernel expellers (PKE) fed to pigs. Six barrows with an initial body weight of 38.0 kg (standard deviation = 1.5) were randomly allotted to a 6×6 Latin square design with 6 dietary treatments and 6 periods. Six experimental diets were prepared in a 3×2 factorial treatment arrangement with 3 diets of a corn-soybean meal-based diet, a CE 30% diet, and a PKE 30% diet and with 2 concentrations of supplemental β-mannanase at 0 or 2,400 U/kg. All diets had the same proportion of corn:soybean meal ratio at 2.88:1. The marker-to-marker procedure was used for fecal and urine collection with 4-d adaptation and 5-d collection periods. No interactive effects were observed between diet and β-mannanase on energy digestibility and DE and ME contents of experimental diets. However, diets containing CE or PKE had less (p<0.05) DE and ME contents compared with the corn-soybean meal-based diet. The DE and ME contents in CE and PKE were not affected by supplemental β-mannanase. Taken together, we failed to find the effect of β-mannanase supplementation on energy utilization in CE and PKE fed to pigs.

Abstract:This study aimed to assess the effects of β-mannanase supplementation in metabolizable energy (ME)-reduced diets containing xylanase-phytase on performance, fecal score, blood biochemical and immunological profile, apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD), digesta passage rate, fecal microbiome, carcass traits and meat quality in finisher pigs ( n = 40 entire male hybrid, 26.0 ± 0.9 kg) randomly assigned to 1 of 4 dietary treatments: a control diet containing isolated phytase and xylanase valued at 40 kcal of ME/kg (CD0), CD0 + β-mannanase (0.3 g/kg valued at 30 kcal of ME/kg) (CD70), CD0 + β-mannanase (0.3 g/kg valued at 45 kcal of ME/kg) (CD85), and CD0 + β-mannanase (0.3 g/kg valued at 60 kcal of ME/kg) (CD100), with 10 pen replicates. Pigs fed CD0 diet showed ( P = 0.002) greater ADFI. However, pigs fed CD0 diet showed ( P = 0.009) lower G:F than those provided CD70 or CD85 diets. A greater ( P < 0.001) superoxide dismutase concentration was observed in pigs fed CD70 diet. Pigs fed CD85 diet showed ( P = 0.002) greater digestible protein than pigs fed CD0 or CD100 diets. Pigs fed CD70 diet showed an increase of 11.3% in digestible protein than those fed CD0 diet. In addition, greater ( P < 0.001) digestible energy was observed in pigs fed CD85 diet. Pigs fed CD0 or CD100 diets showed greater ( P < 0.05) Firmicutes:Bacteroidota ratio than those fed CD85 diet. The Muribaculaceae was more abundant ( P = 0.030) in pigs fed CD70 diet than in those fed CD0 diet. The Prevotella was more abundant ( P = 0.045) in pigs fed CD85 diet than in those fed CD100 diet. In conclusion, β-mannanase supplementation in diets containing xylanase-phytase allows reducing 85 kcal of ME/kg because it improves gain to feed ratio, energy and protein usage, and backfat thickness without metabolic and intestinal ecosystem disorders in finisher pigs.

Effect of dietary β-mannanase supplementation on growth performance, intestinal morphology, digesta viscosity, and nutrient utilization in broiler chickens: Meta-analysis and meta-regression

Abstract:Objective: The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of dietary β-mannanase supplementation on growth performance, intestinal morphology, digesta viscosity, and dietary nutrient utilization in broiler chickens through a meta-analysis. The effects were further examined by a meta-regression analysis with activity levels of β-mannanase in broiler diets. Methods: A total of 23 studies, which were conducted in 11 countries and completed between December 2003 and August 2023, were selected for this meta-analysis. The standardized mean difference and its 95% confidence interval were calculated as the effect size metrics using random effect model, with I2 value being utilized to measure heterogeneity. Investigated measurements included body weight gain (BWG), feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR), villus height (VH), crypt depth (CD), VH:CD ratio, digesta viscosity, nitrogencorrected metabolizable energy (n), apparent ileal digestibility (AID), and apparent total tract retention (ATTR) of dry matter (DM), gross energy (GE), and nitrogen (N). All statistical analyses were performed using R version 4.3.3. Results: Results revealed significant positive effects of dietary β-mannanase supplementation on BWG (p = 0.005), FCR (p<0.001), VH (p<0.001), VH:CD (p<0.001), digesta viscosity (p<0.001), AMEn (p = 0.011), AID of GE (p = 0.002) and N (p = 0.003), and ATTR of DM (p = 0.019), GE (p = 0.002), and N (p = 0.005) in broiler chickens. In the meta-regression analysis, increasing activity levels of β-mannanase in broiler diets increased VH:CD (p< 0.001; R2 = 79.2%) and AID of N (p = 0.038; R2 = 67.4%). Conclusion: The current meta-analysis indicates that dietary β-mannanase supplementation improves energy and nutrient utilization in broiler diets possibly by decreasing digesta viscosity and enhancing intestinal morphology in broiler chickens. These beneficial effects can contribute to improved growth performance in broiler chickens.

Abstract:SummaryThis study investigated the effects of supplementary β‐glucosidase on the carcass composition, meat quality, weight of digestive organ and apparent digestibility in male broilers. Two hundred and forty male, 1‐day avine broiler chicks were randomly allocated into four treatment groups and fed with corn–soya bean meal supplemented with 0 (control), 0.6, 1.2 and 1.8 U/g of β‐glucosidase respectively. The results showed that there were no significant differences (p > 0.05) among groups in carcass composition (percentages of eviscerated yield, half‐eviscerated yield, muscle yield of breast and leg). However, adding 0.6 U/g β‐glucosidase to the diet not only altered the meat quality by decreasing the drip loss ratio (p < 0.05) and relative lightness (L*) value (p < 0.01), increasing relative redness (a*) value (p < 0.01), but also significantly decreased the pancreas to body weight ratio (p < 0.05), however, with little effect on liver, proventriculus and gizzard to body weight ratio (p > 0.05). The length and width of duodenum villus were not affected by the addition of β‐glucosidase, but the coefficients of total tract apparent digestibility of protein and fat increased by 9.02% (p < 0.05) and 7.40% (p < 0.01) respectively; the parameters of ash were not affected by β‐glucosidase addition (p < 0.05). This study provided valuable information for evaluation of the effect of supplementary β‐glucosidase on the meat quality and digestibility of broilers.
Nutritional and functional roles of β-mannanase on intestinal health and growth of newly weaned pigs fed two different types of feeds

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the nutritional and functional roles of β-mannanase on the intestinal health and growth of newly weaned pigs fed a typical or low-cost formulated feeds (LCF). Twenty-four newly weaned pigs at 6.2 kg ± 0.4 body weight (BW) were allotted to three dietary treatments based on a randomized complete block design with sex and initial BW as blocks. Three dietary treatments are as follows: Control, typical nursery feeds including animal protein supplements and enzyme-treated soybean meal; LCF with increased amounts of soybean meal, decreased amounts of animal protein supplements, and no enzyme-treated soybean meal; LCF+, low-cost formulated feed with β-mannanase at 100 g/t, providing 800 thermostable β-mannanase unit (TMU) per kg of feed. Pigs were fed based on a three-phase feeding program for a total of 37 d. On day 37 of feeding, all pigs were euthanized and the gastrointestinal tract was removed for sample collection to analyze intestinal health parameters, mucosa-associated microbiota, and gene expression of tight junction proteins. Pigs fed LCF increased (P < 0.05) the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Helicobacter in the jejunal mucosa, tended to decrease (P = 0.097; P = 0.098) the concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) and the expression of zona occluden 1 (ZO-1) gene in the jejunum, tended to decrease average daily gain (ADG; P = 0.084) and final BW (P = 0.090), and decreased (P < 0.05) average daily feed intake. Pigs fed LCF + tended to decrease (P = 0.088) digesta viscosity, decreased (P < 0.05) the relative abundance of Helicobacter, and increased (P < 0.05) Lactobacillus in the jejunal mucosa compared to LCF. Additionally, LCF + tended to increase final BW (P = 0.059) and ADG (P = 0.054), increased (P < 0.05) gain to feed ratio (G:F), and reduced (P < 0.05) fecal score compared to LCF. LCF with decreased amounts of animal protein supplements and increased amounts of soybean meal had negative effects on the composition of the mucosa-associated microbiota, intestinal integrity, and growth performance of nursery pigs. Beta-mannanase supplementation to LCF decreased digesta viscosity, increased the relative abundance of potentially health-benefitting microbiota such as Lactobacillus, and improved growth and fecal score, thus reflecting its efficacy in low-cost formulated feeds with increased amounts of soybean meal.
Effect of Β-Glucosidase As a Feed Supplementary on the Growth Performance, Digestive Enzymes and Physiology of Broilers

Abstract:The effects of beta-glucosidase on the overall growth performance and a set of physiological parameters of broilers were investigated. 240 male, one-day old Avine broiler chickswere randomly allocated to four treatment groups and fed with a corn-soybean meal supplemented with 0% (control), 0.2%, 0.4% and 0.6% beta-glucosidase. The 0.2% beta-glucosidase group, but not the 0.4% and 0.6% beta-glucosidase groups; showed a significantly increased average daily weight gain (p < 0.05) over that of the control. All three beta-glucosidase feed groups showed significantly higher feed conversion ratios than the control group (p < 0.05). Feed supplementation of 0.2% beta-glucosidase significantly raised the contents of serum isoflavone aglycones as shown by decreases of genistin and daizin (p < 0.01) and an increase of daidzein (p < 0.01). The 0.2% beta-glucosidase feeding significantly increased the intestinal amylase activity while it had little effect on lipase and trypsin activities (p > 0.05). 0.2% beta-glucosidase feeding also significant elevated the levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and malate dehydrogenase while lowering the level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Finally, beta-glucosidase improved the anti-oxidative activities of the animals; the 0.2% beta-glucosidase feed group had higher activities of superoxide dismutase (p < 0.05), glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase in the liver (p < 0.05). and malondialdehyde level in the serum (p < 0.05).

Abstract:Experiment was designed to analyze the effect of low caloric diets, supplemented with β-mannanase on growth performance, carcass characteristics, nutrient digestibility, and other parameters in broilers. In this study, 400 broiler chicks were randomly divided into four treatments (Cont: without β-mannanase; LM-30, MM-60, and HM-90: supplemented with 200, 400, and 600 mg/kg β-mannanase, respectively). Dietary metabolizable energy (ME) in Cont was standard (starter diet 3100 kcal/kg; finisher diet 3200 kcal/kg) and reduced by 30, 60, and 90 kcal/kg, correspondingly in β-mannanase-supplemented treatments. The results exhibited that growth performance was not affected by reducing dietary energy levels with supplementation of β-mannanase. Ileal digestibility of DM and CF was improved (p < 0.01) by supplementation of β-mannanase at low dietary ME levels. Concerning carcass traits, the relative weight of breast meat, drumstick, and abdominal fat increased (p < 0.05) with β-mannanase supplementation in low-ME diets. Treatment HM-90 showed significantly (p < 0.05) better results regarding villus height and VH:CD. It could be concluded from the present results that supplementation of β-mannanase could improve the nutrient digestibility so that it is possible to reduce the dietary energy level without compromising production performance, carcass trails, and meat quality in broilers.

Abstract:This study assessed the effects of β-mannanase (BM) supplementation on growth performance, digestive enzyme activity, cecal microbial communities, and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production in broiler chickens fed diets with different metabolizable energy (ME) levels. A total of 1,296 male 1-d-old Cobb 500 broilers were randomly distributed in a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement (3 ME levels × 0 or 200 g/ton BM), with 6 replicates per treatment combination. The 3 ME levels were 3,000 (ME1), 2,930 (ME2), and 2,860 (ME3) kcal/kg, respectively, during the 0 to 3 wk-old stages and 3,150 (ME1), 3,080 (ME2), and 3,010 (ME3) kcal/kg, respectively, during the 3 to 6 wk-old stages. Reducing ME levels increased broiler feed intake (P = 0.036) and decreased average daily gain (ADG, P = 0.002) during the entire period. While BM supplementation increased ADG (P = 0.002) and improved the feed conversion ratio (P = 0.001) during the 0 to 3 wk-old stages, with no effect during the 3 to 6 wk-old stages. Overall, reducing ME levels increased pancreatic lipase (P = 0.045) and amylase (P = 0.013) activity and duodenal amylase activity (P = 0.047). Notably, BM supplementation significantly increased pancreatic lipase activity (P = 0.015) and increased lipase (P = 0.029) and amylase (P = 0.025) activities in the jejunal chyme. Although diet or enzyme supplementation did not affect microbial diversity, significant differences in microbial communities were observed. At the genus level, decreasing ME levels significantly affected the average abundances of Tyzzerella (P = 0.028), Candidatus_Bacilloplasma (P = 0.001), Vibrio (P = 0.005), and Anaerotruncus (P = 0.026) among groups, whereas BM supplementation reduced the average abundances of Escherichia-Shigella (P = 0.048) and increased the average abundances of Barnesiella (P = 0.047), Ruminococcus (P = 0.020), Alistipes (P = 0.050), and Lachnospiraceae_unclassified (P = 0.009). SCFA concentrations strongly depended on bacterial community composition, and BM supplementation increased acetic acid (P = 0.004), propionic acid (P = 0.016), and total SCFA concentrations. In conclusion, BM supplementation improved the performance of younger broilers, and both enzyme supplementation and reduced ME levels positively affected digestive enzyme activity and intestinal microflora.

Abstract:This study investigated the effects of supplementing feed with various levels of brewer grain meal (BGM) and enzymes (amylase, xylanase, β-glucanase, lipase, cellulase, β-mannanase, phytase, and pectinase) on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, intestinal morphology, immunity, and oxidative status in growing pigs. Eighty growing pigs were subjected to four feed treatments (five replicates per treatment), based on a corn-soybean basal diet: feeds with 0.1% enzyme combination supplementation (PC), no enzyme supplementation (NC), 20% BGM with 0.1% enzyme combination (BGM20), and 40% BGM with 0.1% enzyme combination (BGM40). Supplementing the feed with both BGM-supplemented diets significantly increased final body weight, average daily gain, the digestibility of crude protein and ash, serum concentration of total proteins, superoxide dismutase activity, villus height in the duodenum and jejunum, and duodenal villus height to crypt depth ratio; however, it did not significantly increase blood urea nitrogen, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, malondialdehyde levels, and duodenal crypt depth compared to the NC diet (p 0.05). The addition of up to 40% BGM combined with 0.1% enzyme supplementation positively promotes the growth performance, nutrient utilization, and intestinal health of growing pigs.

Abstract:Two hundred sixteen early-weaned piglets (initial BW 5.8 +/- 1.1 kg) were used to evaluate the effects of microbial phytase (Natuphos (R)) on growth performance and the digestibility of phosphorus (P), crude protein (CP) and organic matter (OM) in maize-soyabean meal based diets. Pigs were allotted to three treatments with eight pigs per pen and nine pens per treatment. Pigs were phase-fed in two, two-week periods each. Three dietary total P levels combination (DM basis) for pigs in phase 1 and 2 were: 1. control, 0.8 and 6.9 g P/kg diet (1.2 g P/kg diet from dicalcium phosphate - DCP) without phytase, 2. 50% DCP reduction of the control + phytase (50% DCP reduction + phytase), 7.5 and 6.3 g P/kg diet (0.6 g P/kg diet from DCP) and 3. without supplementation + phytase (no DCP + phytase), 6.9 and 5.8 g P/kg diet, respectively. Phytase was added to the phytase-supplemented diets at a level of 500 phytase units/kg of feed for both phases. Chromic oxide (2.5 g/kg) was added to the diets as an indigestible marker to determine coefficient of total tract apparent digestibility (CTTAD) of feed. There were no differences (P > 0.05) in overall average daily gain (295, 311 and 297 g/d) and feed/gain ratio (1.47, 1.46 and 1.46) for the control, 50% DCP reduction + phytase and no DCP + phytase diets, respectively. The CTTAD of organic P in the diets with added phytase was significantly higher (P < 0.01) than in the control diet in both phase 1 (0.43 and 0.40 vs 0.32) and 2 (0.42 and 0.36 vs 0.28). The CTTAD of organic matter (OM) was also improved by phytase in phase 2. However, the CTTAD of inorganic P and CP was not influenced by phytase supplementation. Serum inorganic phosphorus concentration (119 mg/L) in pigs fed the diet with 50% DCP reduction + phytase was higher (P < 0.05) than in pigs fed the control diet (101 mg/L) and the diet without DCP supplementation + phytase (105 mg/L) in phase 2 and was higher on d 1 after weaning than in phase 1 and 2. In summary, phytase supplementation of reduced inorganic phosphorus diets, fed to young pigs, maintained performance and improved the digestibility of organic P and decreased the excretion of faecal phosphorus.
Effects of enzyme supplementation on growth, intestinal content viscosity, and digestive enzyme activities in growing pigs fed rough rice-based diet

Abstract:The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of exogenous non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) enzymes on performance, intestinal content viscosity and digestive enzyme activities of growing pigs fed a rough rice-based diet. A total of 60 crossbred barrows with an initial body weight of 35.16 kg (SD = 0.82) were blocked by body weight and randomly assigned to two treatments with three replications. Each group was fed the diet based on rice with or without exogenous NSP enzymes (2 g/kg of diet). During the 70 days of the feeding trial, all pigs were given free access to feed and water. At the end of the feeding trial, six pigs from each treatment were randomly selected and slaughtered to collect intestinal digesta, intestinal mucosa, and pancreas. The addition of NSP enzymes improved average daily gain (p < 0.05) and feed:gain (p < 0.05), and decreased viscosity of digesta in the jejunum (p < 0.00 1) and ileum (p < 0.01) of pigs. The supplementation of NSP enzymes increased activities of protease (p < 0.01), trypsin (p < 0.01) and alpha-amylase (p < 0.05) in duodenal contents. However, digestive enzymes in the pancreas, jejunal and ileal mucosa were unaffected by the supplemental NSP enzymes (p > 0.10). The results indicate that the addition of NSP enzymes to rough rice-based diets improved performance of pigs, reduced viscosity and increased digestive activity in the small intestine.

Abstract:Abstract An experiment was conducted to test the hypothesis that probiotic Bacillus toyonensis M15750 improve the apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of energy and nutrients when included in diets fed by weanling pigs. A control diet was formulated based on corn, soybean-meal, and distillers dried grains with solubles and a second diet was formulated by supplementing the probiotic Bacillus toyonensis M15750 (1 × 109 cfu/kg feed) to the control diet. Titanium dioxide (0.50 %) was added to the diets as an indigestible marker. Sixteen weanling barrows (10.7 ± 0.7 kg) that had a T-cannula in the distal ileum were allotted to the two diets with 8 replicate pigs per diet in a randomized complete block design with body weight being the blocking factor. Pigs were adapted to the diets and to the metabolism crates for 7 days, urine and fecal materials were collected during the following 4 days according to standard procedures using the marker-to-marker approach, whereas ileal digesta were collected for 8 h during the following 2 days. The AID and ATTD of energy and nutrients were calculated for each diet. The AID of dry matter and gross energy was greater (P < 0.05) and the AID of starch tended to be greater (P = 0.05) in the diet supplemented with the probiotic Bacillus toyonensis M15750 compared with the control diet (Table 1). However, no differences were observed for the ATTD of energy or nutrients between the 2 diets, which indicates that the increased digestibility in the small intestine of pigs fed the diet supplemented with Bacillus toyonensis M15750 was offset by a reduction in hindgut fermentation. These results indicate that inclusion of probiotic Bacillus toyonensis M15750 in diets for weanling pigs have the potential to improve the AID of dry matter, gross energy and starch.

Abstract:The field of mobile ad hoc networking has enjoyed dramatic increase in popularity over the last few years. However, owing to the fact that such networks have dynamic, sometimes rapidly changing, random, multihop topologies, the development of efficient and applicable multicast routing protocols presents many issues and challenges. In this paper we propose a Mobility-based Hybrid Multicast Routing (MHMR) protocol suitable for mobile ad hoc networks. The main features that our proposed protocol introduces are the following: (i) mobility-based clustering and group-based hierarchical structure, in order to effectively support stability and scalability; (ii) group-based (limited) mesh structure and forwarding tree concepts, in order to support the robustness of the mesh topologies, which provides ‘limited’ redundancy and the efficiency of tree forwarding simultaneously; and (iii) combination of proactive and reactive concepts that provide low route acquisition delay and low overhead. The use of dynamic mobility-based clustering as the underlying structure is motivated by the observation that in mobile ad hoc networks communications are often among teams that tend to coordinate their movements, and as a result we can dynamically and adaptively partition the network into several groups, each with its own mobility characteristics and behaviors. In our protocol we support the creation of a limited mesh structure based on the clusterheads of the various created clusters, and not among all the members that participate in the multicast session and route, thereby reducing significantly the complexity of the created mesh topology. The performance evaluation of the proposed protocol is achieved via modeling and simulation. The corresponding results demonstrate the proposed multicast protocol's efficiency in terms of packet delivery ratio, scalability, control overhead, end-to-end delay as a function of mobility, packet transmission rate, and multicast group size. Effects of different levels of crude protein and protease on nitrogen utilization, nutrient digestibility, and growth performance in growing pigs

Abstract:This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different levels of crude protein (CP) and protease on nitrogen (N) utilization, nutrient digestibility, and growth performance in growing pigs. A total of six crossbred ([Landrace × Yorkshire] × Duroc) barrows were individually accepted in 1.2 m × 0.7 m × 0.96 m stainless steel metabolism cages. The pigs (average initial body weight of 27.91 ± 1.84 kg) randomly assigned to six diets with six weeks (6 × 6 Latin square design). The experiment was carried out in an environment with a temperature of 23 ± 1.5°C, a relative humidity of 83 ± 2.3% and a wind speed of 0.25 ± 0.03 m/s. The dietary treatments were arranged in a 2 × 3 factorial design with two levels of CP (15.3% or 17.1%) and three levels of protease (0 ppm, 150 ppm, or 300 ppm). The average daily gain and gain to feed ratio (G:F) tended to increase (p = 0.074) with increasing amounts of protease. The low CP level diet reduced (p < 0.050) urinary and fecal N concentrations, the total N excretion in feces, and increased (p < 0.050) N retention. Different protease levels in the diet did not affect (p > 0.05) at N intake, but supplementation of the diets with 300 ppm protease decreased (p < 0.050) the N concentration in urine and feces and tended to increase (p = 0.061) the percentage of N retention retained of the total N intake. The dietary CP level did not affect (p > 0.050) the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of dry matter, digestible energy (DE), and metabolic energy (ME), but diet supplementation with 300 ppm protease showed higher (p < 0.050) ATTD of DE and ME than in the protease-free diet. Therefore, a low protein diet with protease could improve the utilization of nitrogen, thereby reducing the negative effect of N excretion into the environment while maintaining or increasing growth performance compared to a high protein diet.

Abstract:This study investigated the effects of Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation product (SCFP) on nutrient digestibility and ileal digesta characteristics of cannulated growing pigs fed corn-or barley-sorghum-based diets. Eight ileal-cannulated barrows randomized in a double 4 x 4 Latin square design were fed four diets in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement, in which the first factor was diet type (corn-or barley-sorghum-based diet), and the second factor was dietary SCPF treatment (supplemented with or without 5 g/kg SCFP). The cannulated barrows (35.63 +/- 0.76 kg) fitted with a T-cannula in the terminal ileum were housed in metabolism cages in an environmentally controlled room. The results show that compared with the corn-based diet, the barley-sorghum-based diet reduced the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) and apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of crude protein (CP), the AID of all amino acids, amylase activity, trypsin activity, and pH in the ileal digesta of growing pigs (P < 0.05). Dietary 5 g/kg SCFP supplementation increased the digestible energy (DE)/gross energy (GE) ratio (P < 0.05), and the metabolizable energy (ME)/GE ratio (P < 0.10) of growing pigs in comparison to the nonSCFP-supplemented diet. Additionally, dietary 5 g/kg SCFP supplementation tended to enhance the ATTD of acid detergent fiber (ADF) and the AID of lysine (P < 0.10) and elevated the AID of tryptophan in growing pigs (P < 0.05). However, the nutrient digestibility and ileal digesta characteristics were unaffected by diet type & times; SCFP interaction (P > 0.05). In conclusion, compared with the corn-based diet, the barley-sorghum-based diet reduced the activities of digestive enzymes and the digestive absorption of CP and amino acids in growing pigs. Dietary 5 k/kg SCPF supplementation had beneficial effects on the energy and ADF digestibility of growing pigs. However, the nutrient digestibility and ileal digesta characteristics of the pigs were unaffected by diet type x SCFP interaction.

Abstract:The effects of supplementing a barley-based diet for weaned piglets with exogenous beta-glucanase and xylanase on gastrointestinal digestive enzyme activities were investigated. Thirty-six cross-bred weaned piglets were randomly assigned to two groups with three pens based on sex and mass. Each group was fed on the diet based on barley with or without added beta-glucanase and xylanase (0.15%) for a 4-week period. The results showed that enzyme supplementation improved growth performance of piglets significantly (p < 0.05), but had no effect (p = 0.091) on average daily feed intake. The results also showed that supplementation of beta-glucanase and xylanase had no effect on pepsin activity in gastric contents but slightly decreased (p = 0.092) the pepsin activity in gastric mucosa. Meanwhile, no effect of enzyme supplementation on trypsin activity in duodenal contents was observed. However, the activities of amylase and lipase in duodenal contents were significantly (p < 0.05) decreased, whereas the activities of maltase, sucrase and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (gamma-GT) in jejunal and ileal mucosa were enhanced significantly (p < 0.05). The improvement of disaccharidase and gamma-GT activity may be attributed to the positive impacts of exogenous enzymes on digestion and absorption of the nutrients. In conclusion, the current results indicated that supplementation with enzymes in barley-based diets could improve the growth performance of piglets, decrease the activities of amylase and lipase in duodenal contents and increase the activities of disaccharidase and gamma-GT in jejunal and ileal mucosa.
