Abstract:For more than 40 years now, modern theories of literature insist on the role of paraphrases, rewritings, citations, reciprocal borrowings, and mutual contributions of many kinds. The notions of ‘intertextuality’, ‘transtextuality’, and ‘hypertextuality/hypotextuality’ were introduced in the seventies and eighties to approach these phenomena. Through the Phœbus project, computer scientists from the computer science laboratory of the University Pierre and Marie Curie collaborate with the literary teams of Paris-Sorbonne University to develop efficient tools for literary studies that take advantage of modern computer science techniques to detect borrowings of huge masses of texts and to help put them in context. In this context, we have developed a piece of software that automatically detects and explores networks of textual reuses in classical literature. This article describes the principles on which our program is based, the significant results that have already been obtained and the prospective for the near future. It is divided into four parts. The first part recalls the distinction between various types of borrowings like plagiarism, pastiches, citations, etc. The second enumerates the criteria that are retained to characterize reuses and citations on which we are focusing here. The third part describes the implementation and shows its efficiency by comparison with manual detection. Finally, we show some of the results that have already been obtained with the Phœbus program.

Abstract:This paper presents a cognitive typology of reuse processes, and a cognitive typology of documenting processes. Empirical studies on design with reuse and on software documenting provide evidence for a generalized cognitive model. First, these studies emphasize the cyclical nature of design: cycles of planning, writing and revising occur. Second, natural language documentation follows the hierarchy of cognitive entities manipulated during design. Similarly software reuse involves exploiting various types of knowledge depending on the phase of design in which reuse is involved. We suggest that these observations can be explained based on cognitive models of text processing: the van Dijk and Kintsch (1983) model of text comprehension, and the Hayes and Flower (1980) model of text production. Based on our generalized cognitive model, we suggest a framework for documenting reusable components.

Abstract:Research software is an integral part of most research today and it is widely accepted that research software artifacts should be accessible and reproducible. However, the sustainable archival of research software artifacts is an ongoing effort. We identify research software artifacts as snapshots of the current state of research and an integral part of a sustainable cycle of software development, research, and publication. We develop requirements and recommendations to improve the archival, access, and reuse of research software artifacts based on installable, configurable, extensible research software, and sustainable public open-access infrastructure. The described goal is to enable the reuse and exploration of research software beyond published research results, in parallel with reproducibility efforts, and in line with the FAIR principles for data and software. Research software artifacts can be reused in varying scenarios. To this end, we design a multi-modal representation concept supporting multiple reuse scenarios. We identify types of research software artifacts that can be viewed as different modes of the same software-based research result, for example, installation-free configurable browser-based apps to containerized environments, descriptions in journal publications and software documentation, or source code with installation instructions. We discuss how the sustainability and reuse of research software are enhanced or enabled by a suitable archive infrastructure. Finally, at the example of a pilot project at the University of Stuttgart, Germany -- a collaborative effort between research software developers and infrastructure providers -- we outline practical challenges and experiences

Abstract:The main output of the FORCE11 Software Citation working group (<a class="link-external link-https" href="https://www.force11.org/group/software-citation-working-group" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>) was a paper on software citation principles (<a class="link-external link-https" href="https://doi.org/10.7717/peerj-cs.86" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>) published in September 2016. This paper laid out a set of six high-level principles for software citation (importance, credit and attribution, unique identification, persistence, accessibility, and specificity) and discussed how they could be used to implement software citation in the scholarly community. In a series of talks and other activities, we have promoted software citation using these increasingly accepted principles. At the time the initial paper was published, we also provided guidance and examples on how to make software citable, though we now realize there are unresolved problems with that guidance. The purpose of this document is to provide an explanation of current issues impacting scholarly attribution of research software, organize updated implementation guidance, and identify where best practices and solutions are still needed.

Abstract:In Open Source Software, the source code and any other resources available in a project can be viewed or reused by anyone subject to often permissive licensing restrictions. In contrast to some studies of dependency-based reuse supported via package managers, no studies of OSS-wide copy-based reuse exist. This dataset seeks to encourage the studies of OSS-wide copy-based reuse by providing copying activity data that captures whole-file reuse in nearly all OSS. To accomplish that, we develop approaches to detect copy-based reuse by developing an efficient algorithm that exploits World of Code infrastructure: a curated and cross referenced collection of nearly all open source repositories. We expect this data to enable future research and tool development that support such reuse and minimize associated risks.

Abstract:Software intensively depends on external libraries whose relevance may change during its life cycle. As a consequence, software developers must periodically reconsider the libraries they depend on, and must think about \textit{library migration}. To our knowledge, no existing study has been done to understand library migration although it is known to be an expensive maintenance task. Are library migrations frequent? For which software are they performed and when? For which libraries? For what reasons? The purpose of this paper is to answer these questions with the intent to help software developers that have to replace their libraries. To that extent, we have performed a statistical analysis of a large set of open source software to mine their library migration. To perform this analysis we have defined an approach that identifies library migrations in a pseudo-automatic fashion by analyzing the source code of the software. We have implemented this approach for the Java programming language and applied it on Java Open Source Software stored in large hosting services. The main result of our study is that library migration is not a frequent practice but depends a lot on the nature of the software as well as the nature of the libraries.

Abstract:Software is a fundamental pillar of modern scientiic research, not only in computer science, but actually across all elds and disciplines. However, there is a lack of adequate means to cite and reference software, for many reasons. An obvious rst reason is software authorship, which can range from a single developer to a whole team, and can even vary in time. The panorama is even more complex than that, because many roles can be involved in software development: software architect, coder, debugger, tester, team manager, and so on. Arguably, the researchers who have invented the key algorithms underlying the software can also claim a part of the authorship. And there are many other reasons that make this issue complex. We provide in this paper a contribution to the ongoing eeorts to develop proper guidelines and recommendations for software citation, building upon the internal experience of Inria, the French research institute for digital sciences. As a central contribution, we make three key recommendations. (1) We propose a richer taxonomy for software contributions with a qualitative scale. (2) We claim that it is essential to put the human at the heart of the evaluation. And (3) we propose to distinguish citation from reference.

Abstract:Software reuse is considered as a practical approach to solving the software crisis. The BD-HCRUS, a software development supporting system based on heterogeneous component reuse, is introduced. The system has a reusable component library as its kernel in charge of the organization, storage and retrieval of the heterogeneous components, an object-oriented integrated language for the specification and composition of the heterogeneous components, and program comprehension tools for reverse-engineering and extracting reusable components from source code, then re-engineering the components. Therefore, a whole support is lent systematically to the acquisition, specification, organization, storage, retrieval and composition of reusable components.

Abstract:In most fields, computational models and data analysis have become a significant part of how research is performed, in addition to the more traditional theory and experiment. Mathematics is no exception to this trend. While the system of publication and credit for theory and experiment (journals and books, often monographs) has developed and has become an expected part of the culture, how research is shared and how candidates for hiring, promotion are evaluated, software (and data) do not have the same history. A group working as part of the FORCE11 community developed a set of principles for software citation that fit software into the journal citation system, allow software to be published and then cited, and there are now over 50,000 DOIs that have been issued for software. However, some challenges remain, including: promoting the idea of software citation to developers and users; collaborating with publishers to ensure that systems collect and retain required metadata; ensuring that the rest of the scholarly infrastructure, particularly indexing sites, include software; working with communities so that software efforts "count" and understanding how best to cite software that has not been published.

Abstract:Work in software reuse focuses on reusing artifacts. In this context, finding a reusable artifact is driven by a desired functionality. This paper proposes a change to this common view. We argue that it is possible and necessary to also look at reuse from a non-functional (quality) perspective. Combining ideas from reuse, from goal-oriented requirements, from aspect-oriented programming and quality management, we obtain a goal-driven process to enable the quality-based reusability.

Abstract:This paper assesses the evolution of last 43 years in counterfeit research with respect to sources of knowledge (i.e. journals, authors, institutions, countries) and research themes. The oldest paper on this subject discovered in the Scopus database was published 43 years ago, yet a time frame was not specified. Sources of knowledge are assessed on research productivity (quantitative) as well as impact (qualitative). Research themes, key areas of focus within the counterfeit research landscape, are identified and discussed to conceptualize our understanding of the field. Via a systematic literature review, 713 peer-reviewed academic articles published in 282 journals from 1978 to 2021 were selected as the sample for this study. The systematic review technique was chosen as compared with narrative reviews of the literature it focuses on open, extensive, and detailed approaches to literature searches, in addition to conforming to the scientific criteria utilised in primary research, namely transparency, rigour, comprehensiveness, and reproducibility. A database of references and citations was created for analysis. The data was analyzed to prepare comparative tables. Further, the Leximancer software was used to generate lexical conceptual trends. This data was further analyzed to identify emerging themes. The Journal of Business Ethics had the highest number of articles and citations, followed by the Journal of Business Research and Business Horizons. Ian Phau (14 articles) and Michael D. Smith, (9 articles) were the most prolific authors. Joseph Nunes and Ian Phau attained the highest number of citations, cited 658 and 577 times respectively. Eight major research themes were identified: products, piracy, model, price, firms, digital, supply, and ethical. Each theme was analyzed over time. The major research areas analyzed across the articles over time were Technology (particularly “Technology” and “Software” topics) and Ethics (particularly “IP” and “Legislation”). The identification of these research area captures the essence of the paper’s uniqueness and contribution to this field of research. This is the first systematic literature review in counterfeit literature that captures multi-decade sources of knowledge in business journals.

Abstract:This article presents metrics from two Hewlett-Packard (HP) reuse programs that document the improved quality, increased productivity, shortened time-to-market, and enhanced economics resulting from reuse. Work products are the products or by-products of the software-development process: for example, code, design, and test plans. Reuse is the use of these work products without modification in the development of other software. Leveraged reuse is modifying existing work products to meet specific system requirements. A producer is a creator of reusable work products, and the consumer is someone who uses them to create other software. Time-to-market is the time it takes to deliver a product from the time it is conceived. Experience with reuse has been largely positive. Because work products are used multiple times, the accumulated defect fixes result in a higher quality work product. Because the work products have already been created, tested, and documented, productivity increases because consumers of reusable work products need to do less work. However, increased productivity from reuse does not necessarily shorten time-to-market. To reduce time-to-market, reuse must be used effectively on the critical path of a development project. Finally, we have found that reuse allows an organization to use personnel more effectively because it leverages expertise. However, software reuse is not free. It requires resources to create and maintain reusable work products, a reuse library, and reuse tools. To help evaluate the costs and benefits of reuse, we have developed an economic analysis method, which we have applied to multiple reuse programs at HP.<>

Abstract:The Pacific Software Research Center is developing a new method to support reuse and introduce reliability into software. The method is based on design capture in domain specific design languages and automatic program generation using a reusable suite of program transformation tools. The transformation tools, and a domain specific component generator incorporating them, are being implemented as part of a major project underway at the Oregon Graduate Institute of Science and Technology. The processes used in tool development and application of the method are being captured. Once completed, an experiment will be performed on the generator to assess its usability and flexibility.This paper describes the Software Design for Reliability and Reuse method and illustrates its application to the Message Translation and Validation domain, a problem identified by our sponsors so that our method can be compared directly to a previously existing state-of-the-art solution based on code templates produced by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) [14].
How is Software Reuse Discussed in Stack Overflow?

Abstract:Software reuse is a crucial external quality attribute targeted by open-source and commercial projects. Despite that software reuse has experienced an increased adoption throughout the years, little is known about what aspects of code reuse developers discuss. In this paper, we present an empirical study of 1,409 posts to better understand the challenges developers face when reusing code. Our findings show that 'visual studio' is the top occurring bigrams for question posts, and there are frequent design patterns utilized by developers for the purpose of reuse. We envision our findings enabling researchers to develop guidelines to be utilized to foster software reuse.

Abstract:Context: Software reuse costs and benefits have been investigated in several primary studies, which have been aggregated in multiple secondary studies as well. However, existing secondary studies on software reuse have not critically appraised the evidence in primary studies. Moreover, there has been relatively less focus on how software reuse costs and benefits were measured in the primary studies, and the aggregated evidence focuses more on software reuse benefits than reuse costs. Objective: This study aims to cover the gaps mentioned in the context above by synthesizing and critically appraising the evidence reported on software reuse costs and benefits from industrial cases. Method: We used a systematic literature review (SLR) to conduct this study. The results of this SLR are based on a final set of 30 primary studies. Results: We identified nine software reuse benefits and six software reuse costs, in which better quality and improved productivity were investigated the most. The primary studies mostly used defect-based and development time-based metrics to measure reuse benefits and costs. Regarding the reuse practices, the results show that software product lines, verbatim reuse, and systematic reuse were the top investigated ones, contributing to more reuse benefits. The quality assessment of the primary studies showed that most of them are either of low (20%) or moderate (67%) quality. Conclusion: Based on the number and quality of the studies, we conclude that the strength of evidence for better quality and improved productivity as reuse benefits is high. There is a need to conduct more high quality studies to investigate, not only other reuse costs and benefits, but also how relatively new reuse-related practices, such as InnerSource and microservices architecture, impact software reuse.
