Abstract:So far most research work done on software reverse engineering is mainly focused on the legacy systems, which are built on obsolete technologies, but contain a lot of information and knowledge about the certain application domain. However, software based on more recent technologies, such as component- based, also raises many issues during comprehension and evolution. Especially, the component models like in J2EE world are based on many technical aspects that make them difficult to understand and use. Thus, the evolution of component-based software becomes an emerging issue in reverse engineering area. In this paper we propose an idea to integrate reverse engineering with more recent systems based on the new technology, component-based, not only restricted to the legacy system. We also extend the existing graph based approaches to reverse engineering such systems. In our approach, the directed graph describes and manages dependencies among the components in the system based on the information extracted from source code, deployment descriptors and configuration files. With this component dependency graph, it helps developers to understand the system better, and ease the succeeding phases of reengineering the system.

Abstract:A new theory and method of innovative product evolutionary design based on semantics unit was presented.The new theory and method was discussed with evolutionary principles of design concepts and process in integrated platform from viewpoint of innovation and reuse properties for creative product.Key technologies,such as product motion evolutionary design,assembly evolutionary design,structure evolutionary design and reuse evolutionary design,were researched in particular.Furthermore,the new method has been successfully applied in the modeling of some projects and has achieved positive responses in its utility,flexibility and robustness.Experiment results indicated that this method could help designers express product design information more naturally and accurately from high-level semantics layer,and it has realized the support for computer-aided innovative design.

Abstract:Many software systems need to provide services continuously and uninterruptedly. Meanwhile, these software systems need to keep evolving continuously to fix bugs, add functions, improve algorithms, adapt to new running environments and platforms, or prevent potential problems. This situation makes online evolution an important issue in the field of software maintenance and evolution. This paper proposes a component-based approach to online software evolution. Nowadays component technology has been widely adopted. Component technology facilitates software evolution, but also introduces some new issues. In our approach, an application server is used to evolve the application, without special support from the compiler or operating system. Abstract:An increasingly important requirement for software systems is the capability to evolve dynamically according to the changes of computing environment and users' need during runtime. In this paper, a dynamic software architecture oriented approach is proposed to support online evolution. Notably, architecture information is reified as explicit and manipulable entities to organize a runtime architecture meta-model, which is causally connected to software implementation and specification. By using reflection, the evolved architecture meta-model modifies running system, and updates specification simultaneously. The well-defined architecture meta-model supervises all evolutionary behaviors to ensure system consistency, integrity, and evolution traceability. Based on this model, a visualized integrated development platform entitled Artemis-ARC is also successfully implemented. It supports component and service design, development and assembly, especially dynamic evolution. Furthermore, a simple application case is developed with Artemis-ARC to illustrate the effect of online evolution.

Abstract:The prosperity of small hardware and embedded system has been leading a large demand of embedded software. The existing widely used methodology of embedded software development can no longer meet the requirements for embedded software with sufficient reliability, stability, modifiability with in a short time. Heterogeneous evolutional architecture for embedded software methodology can help develop better embedded software. The methodology integrates the heterogeneous, evolutional and orthogonal concept as guidelines into the design of embedded software architecture. This methodology is validated by applying it in a project of video on demand set top box's embedded software. And it proves that the methodology has much better performance.

Abstract:Traditional CAD system is difficult to solve the problems of product diversification because of individual customer requirements. Combining with the inherent rules of product design, similarity science was introduced in the course of reusable design. A reusable design method based on knowledge evolution was advanced based on the idea of similarity analysis. The calculation method of semantic knowledge similarity indices, such as similarity, gratification and reusability, was described. The reusable design flow and evolutionary operator of product design were combined so that the evolution process of semantic unit could reflect the design intention. The new method was applied successfully in the development of numerical controlled machine tool. The engineering product and its design process were expressed effectively, which helps to enhance the design efficiency and quality.

Abstract:Software systems often evolve over time due to frequent changes in user requirements. Many functional changes result in refactoring of the architectural design, which dramatically impacts the software system. Evolutionary architecture is a design principle that helps to support making frequent changes. The key aspect of evolutionary architecture is defining fitness functions to ensure that the changes meet the goals to be achieved. However, planning the evolution of architectural design as incremental steps remains a challenge. This paper presents an approach to automatically generating evolution plans to refactor the architectural design aimed at supporting new functionalities. Formal modelling has been applied to allow functional properties to be verified against the design. With the generated evolution plan, we can determine the safe path to evolve the software system with minimal risk of failures. We have evaluated the accuracy and effectiveness of the evolution plan generated by our approach for six real-world software systems. Our experimental results showed that the proposed approach is effective in generating evolution plans. Moreover, we are able to identify the most suitable planning strategy, which generates the evolution plan with minimal system interruptions.

Abstract:Software continues to evolve due to changing requirements, platforms and other environmental pressures. Modern software is dependent on frameworks, and if the frameworks evolve, the software has to evolve as well. On the other hand, the software may be changed due to changing requirements. Therefore, in high-confidence software evolution, we must consider both framework evolution and client evolution, each of which may incur faults and reduce software quality. In this article, we present a set of approaches to address some problems in high-confidence software evolution. In particular, to support framework evolution, we propose a history-based matching approach to identify a set of transformation rules between different APIs, and a transformation language to support automatic transformation. To support client evolution for high-confidence software, we propose a path-exploration-based approach to generate tests efficiently by pruning paths irrelevant to changes between versions, several coverage-based approaches to optimize test execution, and approaches to locate faults and fix memory leaks automatically. These approaches facilitate high-confidence software evolution from various aspects.

Abstract:Software systems need constantly maintaining or adapting to continuously meet the changing business requirements. The process of maintenance or adaptation is software evolution. In general, people hope to evaluate software evolution for guiding software maintenances. By evaluating how well software maintenances follow the positive evolutionary trends, developers can assert whether it is necessary to redevelop or even refactor newly released or maintained versions of software to enforce the software evolution back on track. In this paper, we propose an approach to evaluating software evolution based on API usage patterns, which are the accumulations and summarizations of people's software design and development experience. In the approach, better software evolution is considered as the process of reusing more usage patterns, and software evolution is evaluated based on how well software reuses usage patterns in the process of evolution. Our work consists of three parts. First, we use a graph-based algorithm to mine usage patterns from different open-source software. Second, we use the patterns to evaluate the evolutions of software systems and accordingly analyze the important changes during software evolution. Third, we compare different approaches and analyze which approach can reflect the process of software evolution accurately. Our experiments on several open source programs show that our approach is more effective than other approaches on identifying the great change events during software evolution.

Abstract:Software systems often evolve over time due to frequent changes in user requirements. Abstract:Evolution is an intrinsic property of computer software. By understanding the dynamics of evolution, the process of software evolution can be improved, so that the of software can be improved, while the maintenance cost can be saved. By de ning the class dependence graph, this paper transforms software systems into software networks, validates software evolution laws using network measures, and discusses the feasibility of modeling software evolution. Firstly, according to the eight evolution laws provided by Lehman, network measures are designed and grouped into three aspects: network size, network quality, and structural control. Secondly, based on the four selected open-source software systems, software networks are built and network measures are counted. The experimental study proves that, four evolution laws of Lehman are supported, while three of the rest, i.e. increasing complexity, continuing growth and declining quality have contradictory cases. Finally, both the E-R model and the modular attachment model are used to simulate the evolution process of the software systems. The results of comparison among generated random networks and software networks prove that intrinsic laws exist in software evolution, and by prudent modeling, software evolution can be replicated and even optimized.

Abstract:The increasing integration of smart products into society is noteworthy in the field of Prospective Ergonomics (PE), as they herald the emergence of novel products featuring yet-to-be-discovered interaction modalities. Literature highlights a lack of front-end prototyping approaches that transcend disciplinary skills and aid communication across diverse design fields, highly relevant in early-stage smart product development. This paper introduces an integrated, low-fidelity prototyping tool to enhance interdisciplinary communication and understanding of future products' interactive and environmental qualities. A survey provides preliminary validation of the integrated tool's format and content. Findings endorse the tool's structure and flexibility in supporting understanding and communication of interactive and environmental qualities of smart product concepts across a range of design disciplines. As such we advance the discourse on PE by envisioning a low-fidelity prototyping tool to create intermediary objects supporting design efforts towards future products and their new and emerging interaction modalities. The increasing prevalence of "smart" products requires an integrated prototyping tool to support interdisciplinary communication when developing products. Our paper proposes such a tool, evaluated via survey by a range of designers of different disciplines. Findings highlight low fidelity and flexibility in the integrated prototyping tool to best support designers.

Abstract:One of the prominent properties of the Internetware Software Paradigm is its evolutionary characteristic. It is recognised that the evolution of software systems are driven by the needs of final users, and influenced by changes in the operational environments and technology advancement. The evolution of biological and social systems often forms a spiral incremental tendency where the changes are continuous, and stepwise. Inspired by the classical pyramid model of Maslow on Human needs, we propose to understand the evolution of software in the Internetware era with a double pyramid model. In other words, user's needs are gradually changing and their expectations to the system functionalities and qualities are getting higher; at the same time, more and more sophisticated software services become available, they provide richer functionalities, better qualities, more diversified choices, and more appealing user experiences. We first structure the development of user expectation and the capability of services as two separate pyramids, and then we define how the two pyramids interacts and influence each other within a co-evolution model. An example of Internetware system development is presented to illustrate how the co-evolution model helps shorten life cycle of system development and achieve high quality and efficiency at the same time.
