Abstract:The family of rare-earth chalcogenides ARECh(2) (A = alkali or monovalent ions, RE = rare earth, and Ch = O, S, Se, and Te) appears as an inspiring playground for studying quantum spin liquids (QSLs). The crucial low -energy spin dynamics remain to be uncovered. By employing muon spin relaxation (mu SR) and zero-field (ZF) AC susceptibility down to 50 mK, we are able to identify the gapless QSL in NaYbSe2, a representative member with an effective spin-1/2, and explore its unusual spin dynamics. The ZF mu SR experiments unambiguously rule out spin ordering or freezing in NaYbSe2 down to 50 mK, which is two orders of magnitude smaller than the exchange coupling energies. The spin relaxation rate lambda approaches a constant below 0.3 K, indicating that finite spin excitations are featured by a gapless QSL ground state. This is consistently supported by our AC susceptibility measurements. The careful analysis of the longitudinal field (LF) mu SR spectra reveals a strong spatial correlation and a temporal correlation in the spin-disordered ground state, highlighting the unique feature of spin entanglement in the QSL state. The observations allow us to establish an experimental H-T phase diagram. The study offers insight into the rich and exotic magnetism of the rare-earth family.

Abstract:Triangular lattice of rare-earth ions with interacting effective spin-1/2 local moments is an ideal platform to explore the physics of quantum spin liquids (QSLs) in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling, crystal electric fields, and geometrical frustration. The Yb delafossites, NaYbCh(2) (Ch = O, S, Se) with Yb ions forming a perfect triangular lattice, have been suggested to be candidates for QSLs. Previous thermodynamics, nuclear magnetic resonance, and powder-sample neutron scattering measurements on NaYbCh(2) have supported the suggestion of the QSL ground states. The key signature of a QSL, the spin excitation continuum, arising from the spin quantum number fractionalization, has not been observed. Here we perform both elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements as well as detailed thermodynamic measurements on high-quality single-crystal NaYbSe2 samples to confirm the absence of long-range magnetic order down to 40 mK, and further reveal a clear signature of magnetic excitation continuum extending from 0.1 to 2.5 meV. The comparison between the structure of the magnetic excitation spectra and the theoretical expectation from the spinon continuum suggests that the ground state of NaYbSe2 is a QSL with a spinon Fermi surface.

Abstract:Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) represent a novel state of matter in which quantum fluctuations prevent the conventional magnetic order from being established, and the spins remain disordered even at zero temperature. There have been many theoretical developments proposing various QSL states. On the other hand, experimental movement was relatively slow largely due to limitations on the candidate materials and difficulties in the measurements. In recent years, the experimental progress has been accelerated. In this topical review, we give a brief summary of experiments on the QSL candidates under magnetic fields. We arrange our discussions by two categories: i) Geometrically-frustrated systems, including triangular-lattice compounds YbMgGaO4 and YbZnGaO4, κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu2(CN)3, and EtMe3Sb[Pd(dmit)2]2, and the kagomé system ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2; ii) the Kitaev material α-RuCl3. Among these, we will pay special attention to α-RuCl3, which has been intensively studied by ours and other groups recently. We will present evidence that both supports and rejects the QSL ground state for these materials, based on which we give several perspectives to stimulate further research activities.
Crystalline Electric Field Excitations in the Quantum Spin Liquid Candidate NaYbSe2

Abstract:Very recently we revealed a large family of triangular lattice quantum spin liquid candidates named rare-earth chalcogenides, which features a high-symmetry structure without structural/charge disorders and spin impurities, and may serve as an ideal platform exploring spin liquid physics. The knowledge of crystalline electric-field (CEF) excitations is an essential step to explore the fundamental magnetism of rare-earth spin systems. Here we employed inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and Raman scattering (RS) to carry out a comprehensive CFE investigation on $NaYbSe_{2}$, a promising representative of the family. By comparison with its nonmagnetic compound $NaLuSe_{2}$, we are able to identify the CEF excitations at 15.8, 24.3 and 30.5 meV at 5K. The selected cuts of the INS spectra are well re-produced with a large anisotropy of $g$ factors ($g_{ab}:g_{c}\sim3:1$). Further, the CEF excitations are explained well by our calculations based on the point charge model. Interestingly, $NaYbSe_{2}$ exhibits an unusual CEF shift to higher energies with increasing temperatures, and the Raman mode close to the first CEF excitation shows an anomalously large softening with decreasing temperatures. The absence of the anomalies in $NaLuSe_{2}$ clearly demonstrates a CEF-phonon coupling not reported in the family. It can be understood in term of the weaker electronegativity of Se. The fact that the smallest first CEF excitation in the sub-family of $NaYbCh_{2}$ is $\sim$ 180K (Ch=O, S, Se), guarantees that the sub-family can be strictly described with an effective S=1/2 picture at sufficiently low temperatures. Interestingly the CEF-phonon coupling revealed here may present alternative possibilities to manipulate the spin systems.

Abstract:Quantum spin liquids (QSL) are theoretical states of matter with long-range entanglement and exotic quasiparticles. However, they generally elude quantitative theory, rendering their underlying phases mysterious and hampering efforts to identify experimental QSL states. Here we study triangular lattice resonating valence bond QSL candidate materials KYbSe$_2$ and NaYbSe$_2$. We measure the magnon modes in their 1/3 plateau phase, where quantitative theory is tractable, using inelastic neutron scattering and fit them using nonlinear spin wave theory. We also fit the KYbSe$_2$ heat capacity using high temperature series expansion. Both KYbSe$_2$ fits yield the same magnetic Hamiltonian to within uncertainty, confirming previous estimates and showing the Heisenberg $J_2/J_1$ to be an accurate model for these materials. Most importantly, comparing KYbSe$_2$ and NaYbSe$_2$ shows that smaller $A$-site Na$^+$ ion has a larger $J_2/J_1$ ratio. However, hydrostatic pressure applied to KYbSe$_2$ increases the ordering temperature (a result consistent with density functional theory calculations), indicating that pressure decreases $J_2/J_1$. These results show how periodic table and hydrostatic pressure can tune the $A$YbSe$_2$ materials in a controlled way.

Emergent photons and fractionalized excitations in a quantum spin liquid

Abstract:A quantum spin liquid (QSL) arises from a highly entangled superposition of many degenerate classical ground states in a frustrated magnet, and is characterized by emergent gauge fields and deconfined fractionalized excitations (spinons). Because such a novel phase of matter is relevant to high-transition-temperature superconductivity and quantum computation, the microscopic understanding of QSL states is a long-sought goal in condensed matter physics. The 3D pyrochlore lattice of corner-sharing tetrahedra can host a QSL with U(1) gauge fields called quantum spin ice (QSI), which is a quantum (with effective $S=1/2$) analog of the classical (with large effective moment) spin ice. A key difference between QSI and classical spin ice is the predicted presence of the linearly dispersing collective excitations near zero energy, dubbed the "photons", arising from emergent quantum electrodynamics, in addition to the spinons at higher energies. Recently, 3D pyrochlore systems Ce2M2O7 (M = Sn, Zr, Hf) have been suggested as effective $S=1/2$ QSI candidates, but there has been no evidence of quasielastic magnetic scattering signals from photons, a key signature for a QSI. Here, we use polarized neutron scattering experiments on single crystals of Ce2Zr2O7 to conclusively demonstrate the presence of magnetic excitations near zero energy at 50 mK in addition to signatures of spinons at higher energies. By comparing the energy (E), wave vector (Q), and polarization dependence of the magnetic excitations with theoretical calculations, we conclude that Ce2Zr2O7 is the first example of a dipolar-octupolar $\pi$ flux QSI with dominant dipolar Ising interactions, therefore identifying a microscopic Hamiltonian responsible for a QSL.

Abstract:Spin-orbit coupling is an important ingredient to regulate the many-body physics, especially for many spin liquid candidate materials such as rare-earth magnets and Kitaev materials. The rare-earth chalcogenides (Ch = O, S, Se) is a congenital frustrating system to exhibit the intrinsic landmark of spin liquid by eliminating both the site disorders between and ions with the big ionic size difference and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction with the perfect triangular lattice of the ions. The temperature versus magnetic-field phase diagram is established by the magnetization, specific heat, and neutron-scattering measurements. Notably, the neutron diffraction spectra and the magnetization curve might provide microscopic evidence for a series of spin configuration for in-plane fields, which include the disordered spin liquid state, 120° antiferromagnet, and one-half magnetization state. Furthermore, the ground state is suggested to be a gapless spin liquid from inelastic neutron scattering, and the magnetic field adjusts the spin orbit coupling. Therefore, the strong spin-orbit coupling in the frustrated quantum magnet substantially enriches low-energy spin physics. This rare-earth family could offer a good platform for exploring the quantum spin liquid ground state and quantum magnetic transitions.
Fractionalized Excitations in the Partially Magnetized Spin Liquid Candidate YbMgGaO4

Abstract:Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are exotic states of matter characterized by emergent gauge structures and fractionalized elementary excitations. The recently discovered triangular lattice antiferromagnet YbMgGaO 4 is a promising QSL candidate, and the nature of its ground state is still under debate. Here we use neutron scattering to study the spin excitations in YbMgGaO 4 under various magnetic fields. Our data reveal a dispersive spin excitation continuum with clear upper and lower excitation edges under a weak magnetic field ( H = 2.5 T). Moreover, a spectral crossing emerges at the Γ point at the Zeeman-split energy. The corresponding redistribution of the spectral weight and its field-dependent evolution are consistent with the theoretical prediction based on the inter-band and intra-band spinon particle-hole excitations associated with the Zeeman-split spinon bands, implying the presence of fractionalized excitations and spinon Fermi surfaces in the partially magnetized QSL state in YbMgGaO 4 .

Abstract:Frustrated quantum magnets are expected to host many exotic quantum spin states like quantum spin liquid (QSL), and have attracted numerous interest in modern condensed matter physics. The discovery of the triangular lattice spin liquid candidate YbMgGaO4 stimulated an increasing attention on the rare-earth-based frustrated magnets with strong spin-orbit coupling. Here we report the synthesis and characterization of a large family of rare-earth chalcogenides AReCh(2) (A = alkali or monovalent ions, Re = rare earth, Ch = O, S, Se). The family compounds share the same structure (R (3) over barm) as YbMgGaO4 , and antiferromagnetically coupled rare-earth ions form perfect triangular layers that are well separated along the c-axis. Specific heat and magnetic susceptibility measurements on NaYbO2 , NaYbS2 and NaYbSe2 single crystals and polycrystals, reveal no structural or magnetic transition down to 50 mK. The family, having the simplest structure and chemical formula among the known QSL candidates, removes the issue on possible exchange disorders in YbMgGaO4 . More excitingly, the rich diversity of the family members allows tunable charge gaps, variable exchange coupling, and many other advantages. This makes the family an ideal platform for fundamental research of QSLs and its promising applications.

Pressure induced metallization and possible unconventional superconductivity in spin liquid $NaYbSe_{2}$

Abstract:Beyond the conventional electron pairing mediated by phonons, high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates is believed to stem from quantum spin liquid (QSL). The unconventional superconductivity by doping a spin liquid/Mott insulator, is a long-sought goal but a principal challenge in condensed matter physics because of the lack of an ideal QSL platform. Here we report the pressure induced metallization and possible unconventional superconductivity in $NaYbSe_{2}$, which belongs to a large and ideal family of triangular lattice spin liquid we revealed recently and is evidenced to possess a QSL ground state. The charge gap of NaYbSe2 is gradually reduced by applying pressures, and at ~20 GPa the crystal jumps into a superconducting (SC) phase with Tc ~ 5.8 K even before the insulating gap is completely closed. The metallization is confirmed by further high-pressure experiments but the sign of superconductivity is not well repeated. No symmetry breaking accompanies the SC transition, as indicated by X-ray diffraction and low-temperature Raman experiments under high pressures. This intrinsically connects QSL and SC phases, and suggests an unconventional superconductivity developed from QSL. We further observed the magnetic-field-tuned superconductor-insulator transition which is analogous to that found in the underdoped cuprate superconductor $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$. The study is expected to inspire interest in exploring new types of superconductors and sheds light into the intriguing physics from a spin liquid/Mott insulator to a superconductor.
Non-Analytic Magnetic Response and Intrinsic Ferromagnetic Clusters in a Dirac Spin Liquid Candidate

Abstract:Finding distinct signatures of a quantum spin liquid (QSL) is an ongoing quest in condensed matter physics, invariably complicated by the presence of disorder in real materials. In this regard the 2D Kagome system YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$[(Cl$_x$Br$_{(1-x)}$)$_{3-y}$(OH)$_y$] (YCOB-Cl), where the vast mismatch in size of Y and Cu avoids subsitutional disorder, otherwise present in kagome materials, has emerged as a favorable candidate. In crystals of this system, with $x<$ 0.4 and no long range order, we report an unusual field dependent magnetization $M(B)$, where $M/B$ changes linearly with $|B|$, the absolute value of the field, in contrast to the expected quadratic behavior. Model calculations with a distribution of ferromagnetic (FM) clusters faithfully capture observed features suggesting such clusters to be intrinsic to real QSL materials. YCOB-Cl has a field enhanced $T^2$ heat capacity as expected for a Dirac QSL but lacks a linear $T$ behavior in the spin susceptibility. By demonstrating that FM clusters dominate the contribution to the susceptibility but not the heat capacity, our work paves the way towards reconciling the apparent inconsistency with a Dirac QSL.

Abstract:A recent focus of quantum spin liquid (QSL) studies is how disorder/randomness in a QSL candidate affects its true magnetic ground state. The ultimate question is whether the QSL survives disorder or the disorder leads to a "spin-liquid-like" state, such as the proposed random-singlet (RS) state. Since disorder is a standard feature of most QSL candidates, this question represents a major challenge for QSL candidates. YbMgGaO_4, a triangular lattice antiferromagnet with effective spin-1/2 Yb^3+ ions, is an ideal system to address this question, since it shows no long-range magnetic ordering with Mg/Ga site disorder. Despite the intensive study, it remains unresolved as to whether YbMgGaO_4 is a QSL or in the RS state. Here, through ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity and magnetic torque measurements, plus specific heat and DC magnetization data, we observed a residual κ_0/T term and series of quantum spin state transitions in the zero temperature limit for YbMgGaO_4. These observations strongly suggest that a QSL state with itinerant excitations and quantum spin fluctuations survives disorder in YbMgGaO_4.

Abstract:Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are an exotic state of matter that is subject to extensive research. However, the relationship between the ubiquitous disorder and the QSL behaviors is still unclear. Here, by performing comparative experimental studies on two kagomé-lattice QSL candidates, Tm3Sb3Zn2O14 and Tm3Sb3Mg2O14, which are isostructural to each other but with strong and weak structural disorder, respectively, we show unambiguously that the disorder can induce spin-liquid-like features. In particular, both compounds show dominant antiferromagnetic interactions with a Curie-Weiss temperature of −17.4 and −28.7 K for Tm3Sb3Zn2O14 and Tm3Sb3Mg2O14, respectively, but remain disordered down to about 0.05 K. Specific-heat results suggest the presence of gapless magnetic excitations characterized by a residual linear term. Magnetic excitation spectra obtained by inelastic neutron scattering (INS) at low temperatures display broad continua. All these observations are consistent with those of a QSL. However, we find in Tm3Sb3Zn2O14, which has strong disorder resulting from the random mixing of the magnetic Tm3+ and nonmagnetic Zn2+, that the low-energy magnetic excitations observed in the specific-heat and INS measurements are substantially enhanced compared to those of Tm3Sb3Mg2O14, which has much less disorder. We believe that the effective spins of the Tm3+ ions in the Zn2+/Mg2+ sites give rise to the low-energy magnetic excitations, and the amount of the occupancy determines the excitation strength. These results provide direct evidence of the mimicry of a QSL caused by disorder.

Abstract:Quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a novel state of matter which refuses the conventional spin freezing even at 0 K. Experimentally searching for the structurally perfect candidates is a big challenge in condensed matter physics. Here we report the successful synthesis of a new spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO4 with symmetry. The compound with an ideal two-dimensional and spatial isotropic magnetic triangular-lattice has no site-mixing magnetic defects and no antisymmetric Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interactions. No spin freezing down to 60 mK (despite θw ~ −4 K), the power-law temperature dependence of heat capacity and nonzero susceptibility at low temperatures suggest that YbMgGaO4 is a promising gapless (≤|θw|/100) QSL candidate. The residual spin entropy, which is accurately determined with a non-magnetic reference LuMgGaO4, approaches zero (<0.6%). This indicates that the possible QSL ground state (GS) of the frustrated spin system has been experimentally achieved at the lowest measurement temperatures.

Abstract:A quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a state of matter characterized by fractionalized quasiparticle excitations, quantum entanglement, and a lack of long-range magnetic order. However, QSLs have evaded definitive experimental observation. Several Yb$^{3+}$-based triangular lattice antiferromagnets with effective $S$ = $\frac{1}{2}$ have been suggested to stabilize the QSL state as the ground state. Here, we build a comprehensive magnetic temperature phase diagram of a high-quality single crystalline KYbSe$_2$ via heat capacity and magnetocaloric effect down to 30 mK with magnetic field applied along the $a$-axis. At zero magnetic field, we observe the magnetic long-range order at $T_N$ = 0.29 K entering 120 degrees ordered state in heat capacity, consistent with neutron scattering studies. Analysis of the low-temperature ($T$) specific heat ($C$) at zero magnetic field indicates linear $T$-dependence of $C/T$ and a broad hump of $C/T$ in the proximate QSL region above $T_N$. By applying magnetic field, we observe the up-up-down phase with 1/3 magnetization plateau and oblique phases, in addition to two new phases. These observations strongly indicate that while KYbSe$_2$ closely exhibits characteristics resembling an ideal triangular lattice, deviations may exist, such as the effect of the next-nearest-neighbor exchange interaction, calling for careful consideration for spin Hamiltonian modeling. Further investigations into tuning parameters, such as chemical pressure, could potentially induce an intriguing QSL phase in the material.

Abstract:Two-dimensional triangular-lattice materials with spin-1/2 are perfect platforms for investigating quantum frustrated physics with spin fluctuations. Here we report the structure, magnetization, heat capacity, and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) results on cesium ytterbium diselenide, CsYbSe2. There is no long-range magnetic order down to 0.4 K at zero field. The temperature-dependent magnetization, M(T), reveals an easy-plane magnetic anisotropy. A maximum is found in M(T) around T approximate to 1.5 K when magnetic field H is applied in the ab plane, indicating the short-range interaction. The low-temperature isothermal magnetization M(H) shows a one-third plateau of the estimated saturation moment, which is characteristic of a two-dimensional (2D) frustrated triangular lattice. Heat capacity shows field-induced long-range magnetic order for both H vertical bar vertical bar c and H vertical bar vertical bar ab directions. The broad peak in heat capacity and highly damped INS magnetic excitation at T = 2 K suggests strong spin fluctuations. The dispersive in-plane INS, centered at the (1/3 1/3 0) point, and the absence of dispersion along the c direction suggest 120 degrees noncollinear 2D-like spin correlations. All these results indicate that the two-dimensional frustrated material CsYbSe2 can be in proximity to the triangular-lattice quantum spin liquid. We propose an experimental low-temperature H-T phase diagram for CsYbSe2.

Abstract:We present detail thermodynamic and muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) studies of quantum spin liquid (QSL) candidate H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$. In agreement with the low temperature thermodynamic evidence (\textit{e.g.} bulk magnetization and heat capacity) for the absence of magnetic transition, zero-field (ZF)-$\mu$SR measurements indicate the absence of static magnetic ordering or spin freezing down to our lowest temperature of 80~mK. Both ZF- and longitudinal-field (LF)-$\mu$SR measurements reveal persistent spin fluctuations at low temperatures. These results provide well-established evidence of a QSL state in H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$. Furthermore, the observation of the time-field scaling behavior of $\mu$SR spectra $A(t)\sim A(t/H^{0.46})$, and the low temperature power-law specific heat coefficient $C/T \sim T^{-0.57}$, indicate the finite density of state in the form of $N(E) \sim E^{-0.5}$, in a good agreement with the disorder-induced states in the Kitaev spin liquid.

Abstract:The Mott transition is one of the fundamental issues in condensed matter physics, especially in the system with antiferromagnetic long-range order. However, such a transition is rare in quantum spin liquid (QSL) systems without long-range order. Here we report the experimental pressure-induced insulator to metal transition followed by the emergence of superconductivity in the QSL candidate NaYbSe(2)with a triangular lattice of 4fYb(3+)ions. Detail analysis of transport properties in metallic state shows an evolution from non-Fermi liquid to Fermi liquid behavior when approaching the vicinity of superconductivity. An irreversible structure phase transition occurs around 11 GPa, which is revealed by the x-ray diffraction. These results shed light on the Mott transition in the QSL systems.
