Abstract:Successful joint experiments with Deutsche Telecom (DT) on long-haul transmission of 100G and beyond are demonstrated over standard single mode fiber (SSMF) and inline EDFA-only amplification. The transmission link consists of 8 nodes and 950-km installed SSMF in DT’s optical infrastructure with the addition of lab SSMF for extended optical reach. The first field transmission of 8×216.4-Gb/s Nyquist-WDM signals is reported over 1750- km distance with 21.6-dB average loss per span. Each channel modulated by 54.2-Gbaud PDM-CSRZ-QPSK signal is on 50-GHz grid, achieving a net spectral efficiency (SE) of 4 bit/s/Hz. We also demonstrate mixed data-rate transmission coexisting with 1T, 400G, and 100G channels. The 400G uses four independent subcarriers modulated by 28-Gbaud PDM-QPSK signals, yielding the net SE of 4 bit/s/Hz while 13 optically generated subcarriers from single optical source are employed in 1T channel with 25-Gbaud PDM-QPSK modulation. The 100G signal uses real-time coherent PDM-QPSK transponder with 15% overhead of soft-decision forward-error correction (SD-FEC). The digital post filter and 1-bit maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) are introduced at the receiver DSP to suppress noise, linear crosstalk and filtering effects. Our results show the future 400G and 1T channels utilizing Nyquist WDM technique can transmit long-haul distance with higher SE using the same QPSK format.

Abstract:We have transmitted a 7 x 224 Gb/s/ch Nyquist wavelength-division-multiplexed signal over a 1600-km conventional single-mode fiber (SMF-28) with 80 km per span and an erbium-doped fiber amplifier-only amplification. Each channel on the 50-GHz grid is modulated using polarization-division-multiplexed quadrature-phase-shift-keying at 56 Gbaud giving a record spectral efficiency of 4 b/s/Hz. Both the post filter and the Viterbi maximum likelihood sequence detection are introduced into digital signal processing, to suppress the undesired noise, linear crosstalk enhancement, and filtering effects. The bit error ratio of all channels after transmission over a 1600-km SMF-28 is smaller than the forward error correction limit of 3.8x10(-3).

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the coherent transmission system with the highest ETDM-based symbol rate of 128.8-GBaud over record breaking distances. We successfully transmitted single-carrier 515.2-Gb/s PDM-QPSK/9-QAM signals over 10,130km/6,078-km, respectively, over 100km spans of TeraWave SLA + fiber. To the best of our knowledge, it is the highest ETDM-based symbol rate reported so far, and the longest WDM transmission distance with single-carrier 400G signals. For the first time, the 515.2-Gb/s single-carrier PDM-QPSK signals in 200-GHz-grid are successfully transmitted over distance above 10,000km in terrestrial transmission environment. We have also demonstrated the transmission of single carrier 128.8-GBaud filtered QPSK signals in 100-GHz-grid over 6,078-km, which has the line spectral efficiency (SE) of 5.152 (b/s/Hz).

Abstract:The highly filtering-tolerant performance of the 9-QAM liked super-Nyquist signal is experimentally demonstrated. Using this scheme, we successfully transmit 10 channels 440-Gb/s signal over 3000-km fiber and 10 cascaded ROADMs with 100-GHz grid based on single-carrier ETDM 110-GBaud QPSK.

Abstract:The three-channel transmission of 42.8 Gbit/s nonreturn-to-zero differential phase-shift keying(NRZ-DPSK)signal is demonstrated.The 410 km transmission link consists of four spans using standard single-mode fiber(SSMF).The dispersion compensation fiber(DCF)and erbium-doped fiber amplifier/distributed raman amplifier(EDAF/DRA)hybrid amplification are used.Both optical power spectrum and eye diagrams of the DPSK signal are given in back-to-back configuration and after transmission(center channel).The curves of bit error rate(BER)of the center channel also is given,both in back-to-back configuration and after transmission,which is compared with the curve in single-channel transmission configuration.The BER of the DPSK signal of the center channel is 1.0E-3 after transmission using single-ended detection.

Abstract:We demonstrate experimentally a 43 Gb/s DWDM optical transmission system over 900km single mode fiber with 100km spans using NRZ format and Raman amplification without FEC. A commercial LiNbO3 modulator and a self-designed 43 Gb/s transmitter based on electro-absorption modulator and are compared in the system, and for the first time the electro-absorption modulation is shown to be able to realize up to 1200km transmission with a power penalty less than 2dB. This system includes 8 channels of 43 Gb/s DWDM signal and can support 40 channels over C band. Transmission over 1500km is also presented and the influence of polarization mode dispersion is shown to be a main limitation. © 2006 IEEE.

Abstract:We have realized the first field transmission of 8 × 216.8-Gb/s Nyquist wavelength-division-multiplexing (N-WDM) signals over 1750-km G.652 fiber consisting of 950-km real and 800-km lab fibers with erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA)-only amplification. The average loss per span is 21.6 dB. Each channel is modulated with 54.2-Gbaud (216.8-Gb/s) polarization-division-multiplexing carrier-suppressed return-to-zero quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-CSRZ-QPSK) data on a 50-GHz grid giving a record spectral efficiency (SE) of 4 b/s/Hz. Digital post filtering and 1-bit maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) are introduced into the offline digital signal processing (DSP) at the receiver to suppress noise, linear crosstalk and filtering effects. We have also investigated the co-transmission of 200 G PDM-CSRZ-QPSK and 200 G PDM 16-ary quadrature-amplitude-modulation (PDM-16 QAM) signals on a 50-GHz grid, and found that PDM-CSRZ-QPSK signals have better bit-error-rate (BER) performance for both back-to-back and 700-km transmission cases. Meanwhile, PDM-16 QAM signals are subject to larger crosstalk from the neighboring Nyquist QPSK channels.
