Abstract:The knowledge and beliefs of parents have an impact on their children's general and oral health. The objective of this study is to assess knowledge, attitude, and behavior of parents and identify possible associated factors of early childhood caries (ECC) in the western region of Saudi Arabia. Parents aged 18 and older were invited to complete a self-administered, validated questionnaire. Questions covered demographics, knowledge, attitude, and behavior regarding ECC etiology and prevention. Of the 644 parents who completed the questionnaire, 51.4% were not aware of the early signs of tooth decay, such as white lines. Pain and trauma were reported as the major reasons for a child to visit a dentist (42.4%). Only 37% of parents were aware of the importance of fissure sealant, and only 23% knew how it is applied. Compared with mothers, fathers were significantly less aware of hidden sugar and the relation between the frequency of consuming breast milk or bottled milk and caries development (p = 0.001). Similarly, fathers were more likely to believe that children could achieve effective teeth cleaning without parental assistance (p = 0.001). Preventive guidance should be provided by oral healthcare providers in Saudi Arabia to improve parents' knowledge of ECC prevention.

Abstract:Parent-targeted oral health awareness campaigns should place a strong emphasis on issues like the value of deciduous teeth and how to treat them, frequent dental checkups, and dietary habits. The current study's objective is to evaluate parents' knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes regarding their children's oral health and how those factors affect the prevalence of dental caries in 5- to 10-year-old children in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Parents of school-aged children aged 5 to 10 who came to our hospital were the subjects of a cross-sectional questionnaire survey. The study included 209 children in all, together with their parents. Utilizing DMFT and the deft index, clinical examinations of children were conducted. Parents were given a self-designed questionnaire to evaluate their understanding, attitudes, and practices about their children's dental health. SPSS version 24 was used for the statistical analysis. A p-value of 0.05 or less was regarded as statistically significant when using the ANOVA test to examine the relationship between dental caries status and KAP. The mean deft and DMFT were 6.46 ± 1.6 and 1.56 ± 2.8, respectively. Most parents (72.2%) demonstrated adequate knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes. Parental KAP and mean DMFT/DEFT did not differ significantly. The study's participants had reasonable KAP for the oral health of their children. The significance of deciduous teeth and their treatment, frequent dental appointments, and dietary behaviors are among the knowledge gaps in oral health.

Abstract:Objectives: to assess the knowledge level of parents from the central region of Saudi Arabia about oral health and care of preschool children and its relation with sociodemographic variables, parents‟ self-perception toward their dental health, importance of teeth and frequency of dental visits. Methods: a random sample of 754 parents participated in this cross-sectional study and completed an internationally accepted questionnaire. Chi square test and logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the data (p<0.05). Results: mean knowledge score of the parents was 4.8 (out of 11). Less than 20% of the parents were knowledgeable about the best position for tooth brushing, the concentration of fluoride in a child‟s toothpaste, timing of first dental check-up, and best time to give a sugary snack. Mothers, parents with high educational level and family income, parents with positive attitude towards teeth and excellent self-perception of their dental health were significantly more likely to score higher (p<0.05). Conclusions: knowledge of parents about oral health and care of preschool children in the central region of Saudi Arabia was deficient. Gender, education level of parents, family income, attitude about teeth and self-perception of parents‟ own dental health were factors which influenced their knowledge. To improve parents‟ knowledge, role of health professionals should be improved and TV commercials directed toward the areas which had gaps in knowledge.

Abstract:Background: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a serious complication primarily affecting patients with cardiac conditions. It is widely recognized that oral microorganisms contribute to the development of IE. Objectives: The objective is to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and perception of parents of children at risk of IE by studying the preventive measures employed by them. Materials and methods: A self-constructed questionnaire composed of 14 questions was distributed among parents of children aged 0-12 years with known cardiac diseases. The parents/caregivers who were attending the pediatric outpatient clinics at King Fahad Medical City (KFMC) were selected randomly. Results: A total of 112 parents responded to this questionnaire. Almost 50% of the participants in this study reported that their children do not brush their teeth regularly, with only 12.5% of them brushing twice a day. Regarding the role of parents in supervising oral hygiene, 62.5% of them stated that they only provide advice but do not watch their child brush their teeth, and only 9.8% of parents are actively involved in advising and watching their children brush their teeth. In this study, 95.5% of parents agreed that maintaining good dental health was crucial for overall body health, and 58% of the participants showed interest in receiving more education about oral health and its impact on overall well-being. To assess the statistical significance, a nonparametric Pearson's chi-square test for fitness was employed. A p-value of ≤ 0.05 was used to report the statistical significance of the results. Conclusion: While the parents demonstrated adequate knowledge of oral health, their attitudes toward it were lacking. So, both parents and children require a modification in their attitudes toward dental care and oral health.
Induction of hard keratin expression in non-nail-matrical keratinocytes by nail-matrical fibroblasts through epithelial-mesenchymal interactions.

Abstract:Epithelium in the nail matrix is different from that at other body sites, in terms of clinical and histological appearance. Hard keratins are exclusively expressed in the nail matrix and bed and the hair apparatus, and hard keratin is considered a differentiation marker of these sites. Whether the expression of hard keratin in non-nail-matrical keratinocytes could be induced by nail-matrical fibroblasts was examined. Skin equivalents were constructed in three ways; ventral keratinocytes (from the ventral side of the digit) were cocultured with ventral fibroblasts (group A), ventral keratinocytes were cocultured with nail-matrical fibroblasts (group B), and nail-matrical keratinocytes were cocultured with ventral fibroblasts (group C). Immunohistochemical examinations with anti-hard keratin antibody (HKN-7) revealed hard keratin expression in groups B and C. HKN-7-positive cells were distributed continuously in the entire epithelial strata or in the suprabasal layer in group B, whereas HKN-7-positive cells were distributed spottily in group C. This study indicates extrinsic hard keratin induction in non-nail-matrical keratinocytes by nail-matrical fibroblasts and suggests that non-nail-matrical epidermal grafts may be effective in the treatment of deepithelized nail injuries. In addition, it is possible that lost nails could be reconstructed with grafts of "tissue-engineered" nail equivalent.

Abstract:Background: Preschool children's oral hygiene maintenance is greatly prejudiced by their parent's knowledge and understanding regarding oral health. When parents are devoid of the basic awareness of caries-associated factors, the significance of primary teeth, and oral healthcare, it is challenging to program disease prevention strategies and apply them effectively.Aims and objectives: This pilot study aimed to assess the knowledge regarding oral health, its effects, and the influence of demographic values on the parental practices among the parents of 2-6-year-old children by using a self-administered pretested questionnaire.Materials and methods: The questionnaire was randomly distributed among parents of 2-6-year-old children who visited Buraidah Central Hospital. The sample size taken for this pilot study was 1,000. The questionnaire included 26 questions associated with the parent's knowledge about the oral health of the child, hygiene maintenance, and dietary habits. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS software.Results: In the present research, a total of 1,000 parents participated in the study. It was observed that parental knowledge and hygiene practices increased as the educational status increased. It was also observed that as the number of children decreased in the family, the dietary practices and hygiene practices improved. All these observations were found to be statistically significant (<i>p</i> < 0.05).Conclusion: Parent's education and knowledge reflect in their child's development of healthy practices. Abstract:Objective: To assess the parents’ knowledge and awareness of their children’s oral health in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Methods: The study was a cross-sectional analytical study of Saudi parents. A self-administered questionnaire was collected from 324 parents in public parks and malls. In addition to the demographic questions, parents’ knowledge about the number of primary teeth, tooth brushing, best time of dental visits, the meaning of plaque and calculus, the importance of fluoride, the relationship between primary and permanent teeth and the effect of oral health on general health were questioned. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and one-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni tests to assess differences in the mean number of correct answers among demographic categories. A p -value of 0.05 was set at a significant level. Results: The percentages of correct answers ranged from 26% to 75% depending on the type of questions. Only 26-28% could identify the number of primary teeth and the duration of teeth brushing. About one-third of parents knew the time of the first dental visit and the definition of plaque and calculus. Between 63-75% of parents believed that primary teeth can affect permanent teeth and mouth problems can affect general health. On average, 59.2% of participants provide incorrect answers about their children’s oral health. The numbers of correct answers were significantly increased by increasing education and income. Conclusion: Parents' knowledge and awareness of oral health among Saudi parents were poor. Special attention should be given to parents with low socioeconomic status who need to be educated about children oral health more.

Material and Methods: A questionnaire was developed and the 1st section comprised sociodemographic variables. The second section contained questions about the eruption of teeth, fluoride importance, cariogenic food, and dental visits. The questionnaire was shared electronically via a link to the receptionist of the gynaecologist at different health centres of Najran to be filled by expectant mothers. The convenient sampling method was used to collect the responses. Data were presented using descriptive statistics. Results: A total of 572 pregnant women participated in this survey. Three hundred and fifteen (55.1%) knew that 1st primary tooth erupts at the age of 6 months. The majority of the respondents (n=332) agreed that toothbrushes and toothpaste could be used to clean a child's teeth; only 5.4%, 10%, and 24.5% preferred miswak, mouthwash, and toothbrush, respectively. Participants were well familiar with cariogenic food and occasionally allowed their children to take it. They have enough knowledge about fluoride toothpaste, but they were not familiar with the benefits of fluoride varnish. Almost 50% of the respondents agreed that the child should visit the dentist within six months, and 27.4% said they should visit the dentist whenever there is a problem. Conclusion: Almost 50% of participants showed a positive attitude towards most questions. However, there is a need to improve their behaviour and knowledge about many aspects of dental care.

Abstract:The etiology of oral diseases in children is complex and multifactorial. The oral health of children can be influenced by various factors, including parental knowledge, attitudes and behaviors, as well as socioeconomic status. The objective of this study was to assess, among mothers of children aged 6-12 years, (1) mothers' knowledge about their children's oral health, (2) mothers' attitude toward their children's oral health, and (3) mothers' dental behavior concerning their oral health and to evaluate their influence on their children's dental caries. This cross-sectional study involved three questionnaires to be filled in by mothers of primary school children in addition to an oral examination of their children to measure decayed, missing, filled teeth for primary (dmft) and permanenet (DMFT) dentitions. The mother-child pairs were recruited through multistage stratified random sampling of primary schools in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire was comprised of four sections: 1-demographic characteristics and socioeconomic status 2-Hiroshima University Dental Behavioral Inventory (mothers' attitudes and behavior pertaining to their oral health) 3-mothers' knowledge regarding the oral health of their children 4-mothers' attitude toward their children oral health. A total of 1496 mother-child pairs completed the study. The mean values of dmft were 4.08 ± 3.47; DMFT was 1.82 ± 2.07; total dmft and DMFT were 5.65 ± 4.05. According to the questionnaire results, mothers in private schools had a more favorable attitude and behavior toward their oral health, as well as a more favorable knowledge and attitude toward their children's oral health. The multiple linear regression model revealed that children's dmft/DMFT scores were significantly related to mother education, mother questionnaire scores, and the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index. Children's oral health is significantly impacted by oral health-related knowledge, attitude and behaviors of their mothers in addition to income status and education level.

Abstract:Objective This cross-sectional study aims to assess parents' knowledge, attitude, and practices toward the oral health of their children with primary dentition. Patients and methods The study was performed in the Pediatric Dentistry and Dental Public Health Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University. Data were obtained through 301 questionnaires translated from English to Arabic, for the assessment of the parents' knowledge, attitude, and practices scores and via clinical examination of the children for the assessment of caries prevalence by calculation of their dmf scores. Results The majority of parents (90%) had adequate knowledge scores with a significantly strong negative correlation to dmf scores of their children. For attitude score, 100% of parents reported adequate attitude score, with insignificant weak negative correlation to dmf scores of their children. Finally, the practice score was adequate in only 44.52% of parents, with a significantly strong negative correlation to dmf scores of the children. Conclusions The majority of parents had adequate knowledge and attitude, although having inadequate practice. The mean dmf score of the children was significantly affected by parents' knowledge, but weakly affected by their beliefs and attitudes. The poor practice of parents revealed in the present study had a strong negative influence on their children's caries prevalence.
Comparison between Eusol and Silastic foam dressing in the postoperative management of pilonidal sinus.

Abstract:Seventy-five consecutive patients with pilonidal sinus disease were randomized to receive either Eusol dressings or Silastic foam dressings. Patients were divided into those with pilonidal sinus and pilonidal abscess. There was no significant difference between time to hospital discharge or time to full healing in either group. The cost benefits and simplicity of Silastic foam dressing are discussed.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Dental caries is a disease that is quite common in children and has a negative impact on their oral health, mental health, and quality of life. This study aimed to collect and correlate information about oral health awareness, oral health status, and oral hygiene practices in the urban and rural areas of Saudi Arabia. Methods: The cross-sectional study was carried out among three dental clusters of Qassim from November 2022 to April 2023 in 12 schools on seven- to 12-year-old children. Data collection was done using the WHO Oral Health Questionnaire for Children.RESULTS: The current investigation included 700 children, 360 males and 340 females. Both urban and rural parents were more educated. Most children in rural areas reported excellent gum health than in urban areas (48.2% and 41.3%, respectively). Pain was the most common cause of visiting the dentist in rural more than in urban areas (55.7% and 54.5%, respectively). A significantly higher frequency of sugar consumption was reported for rural children.CONCLUSION: Most rural and urban children take care of their teeth. The vast majority of them use a toothbrush and toothpaste to clean their teeth. However, the dental visit was not regular and only related to the toothache. They need more oral health education and promotion programs to improve the knowledge of oral health behavior in the Qassim region and the rest of Saudi Arabia.

Abstract:Background: Primary teeth are important for eating, speaking, and esthetics, as well as for guiding the eruption and maintaining the space for the permanent teeth. The best space maintainers (SM) for permanent dentition are the natural primary teeth. The aim of this study was to assess parents' knowledge and awareness of the importance of primary teeth and SM in Saudi Arabia. Method: This cross-sectional study invited parents who were living in Saudi Arabia via different social media platforms to complete a validated questionnaire. The data collected included demographic characteristics, questions about parents' knowledge of their children's oral hygiene, and the importance of primary teeth, as well as questions about knowledge of SM. Results: A total of 392 participants completed the questionnaire. Dental problems and pain were the most common reasons for visiting the pediatric dentist (n=260; 66.3%). With respect to the age at which the first primary tooth erupted, more than half of the parents (n=270; 68.9%) knew the correct age. Only 43.3% (n=168) of the parents had received any information about SM and only 39.5% (n=155) of them knew their purpose. Conclusion: Most parents agree that treating primary teeth is important for their children's oral health and development. However, most are unaware of an SM's purpose. We recommend that dentists discuss SM's importance with parents actively after extracting their child's teeth. This will help increase parents' awareness and understanding of SM and encourage them to be more informed about this dental treatment option.

Abstract:Aim: Children under 5 years of age generally spend most of their time with parents or guardians, especially mothers. Parents play a central role in giving children the information and encouragement needed for healthy lives. Parental oral health knowledge, belief and attitudes influence the oral health maintenance, dietary habits and healthy behavior of their children. The aim of this study was to assess the mothers oral health care knowledge and to assess the oral health status of their child. Materials and Methods: A total of 386 mothers along with their child of 1-6 years were randomly selected for the study. A 22-point questionnaire including parent's literacy levels, socioeconomic status, dietary practices and oral hygiene practices, was designed to assess the knowledge of the mothers regarding oral health of their child. Oral examination of the children was done by World Health Organization criteria for recording children's oral health status. Results: About 87% of the mothers agreed that intake of food with excessive sugars can cause cavities, and 95.8% admitted that chocolates cause the most decay. 80.5% agreed to the fact that leaving a milk bottle all night increases the risk for tooth decay, however, 59.3% mothers were of the opinion that dental visit is must only in the presence of decay. 59.3% mothers were unaware about the optimal fluoride content. 71.7% mothers agreed that caries in deciduous teeth are a matter of concern. The average decayed score of the children was 2.9 and 77.9% of the children had a fair to good oral hygiene status.Conclusion: Instead of the fact that most of the health care knowledge that the mothers had was primarily from the family elders, they were aware of caries risk factors, tooth brushes and amount of toothpaste and bacteria from mother's cavities can infect child. This could be observed by less number of decayed teeth and good oral hygiene status of the children. However, parents knowledge, attitudes and few beliefs regarding dental care need to be improved.

Abstract:Aim. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and practices of parents residing in Pakistan toward pits and fissure sealants in children. Materials and Methods. This descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out between November 2022 to March 2023. An online questionnaire was distributed through various social media platforms. Independent t-test and Multiple Linear Regression analysis were performed. Results. A total of 570 participants were recruited. For protection against tooth decay, most of the participants 456(80%) believed that fissure sealants should be placed to protect teeth from decay. Placement of fissure sealants was considered to be a cost-effective measure by majority of the 480 (84.2%) respondents. Conclusion. Fissure sealants are one of the most effective preventive measures against tooth decay. The knowledge, attitude and practice of parents were some being aware of fissure sealants and some were not. It appeared to support the placement of fissure sealants for their children.
Early childhood caries and risk factors in Jordan

Abstract:Objective: To describe the prevalence of dental caries among Jordanian preschool children and risk factors for caries. Design: Preschool children aged 1 to 5 years from randomly selected nurseries and kindergartens in Amman were surveyed in September 2001. A questionnaire to investigate factors that might have affected dental caries level was completed by parents. Dental caries was diagnosed as recommended by the World Health Organization. Results: The mean dmft scores at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 years were 0.19, 1.15, 1.7, 2.13, and 3.22 respectively. Overall, 52% of children were caries-free. Caries level was significantly related to feeding practices, snacking habits, oral health practices and pattern of dental visiting as well as to socio-economic background, parents, education level and awareness. Conclusion: The dental caries level was slightly higher than that of children in industrialised countries but lower than that of children in the neighbouring Arab countries. However, the early caries development seen in children from the lower socio-economic classes, because they are at high risk for caries in Jordan, reinforces the need for preventive programmes before eruption of the teeth. Access to dental care must be improved to enable any preventive strategies to be implemented.

Abstract:The current wireless networks will not be able to cope with the expected growth in data and multimedia services in a flexible and cost-effective manner. This paper presents the wireless multimedia service opportunities. It includes a discussion on wireless multimedia services and their characterization. A practical model is given to estimate the diffusion of wireless multimedia services in the network. It discusses the benefits of using IP centric solutions for wireless, and the challenge of QoS and wireless mobility to make this IP centric solution realizable. It proposes network and service architecture solutions that combine the current wireless access standards into the core IP network. It also shows how an IP addressable terminal can be connected to this IP wireless network to make the multimedia service implementation simpler. If a convergence of the mobile and Internet technologies can be achieved, it would be a powerful force in realizing vast economies of scale and enabling a wireless lifestyle.
