Abstract:THE management of pancreatitis in the chronic phase is a vexatious problem, particularly in the stage variously referred to as chronic relapsing pancreatitis, acute recurrent pancreatitis and subacute pancreatitis. The medical or nonoperative prevention of recurrences of acute pancreatitis has been difficult to evaluate, but seems ineffectual in most cases. The surgical approach, in general, is also unsatisfactory, as attested by the many varied procedures that have been advocated at different clinics. Chronic atrophic pancreatitis is an equally difficult problem for medical or surgical management, digestive and metabolic disturbances and pain being the symptoms most characteristic of this late stage . . .
